Superyachts are some of the most formidable private vessels on the ocean, but are they capable of crossing the Atlantic Ocean?

Superyachts can definitely cross the Atlantic – some with absolute ease. There are routes from the United States to Europe that stretch for just over three thousand miles, a distance which some superyachts can swallow up in no time. They’re also big enough to handle any adverse Atlantic weather.

Set Sail On The Sea In Your Superyacht

If you’ve got tens of millions of dollars laying around doing absolutely nothing, why not invest in a superyacht? They’re perfect for exploring the world, especially if you want to do so in what is essentially a floating mansion. 

There are few things more lavish or extravagant than a superyacht. They’re regularly seen in the world’s most luxurious resorts and harbors around the world and are almost exclusively reserved for society’s elite.

At the highest end of the spectrum, superyachts come in sizes that rival some small hotels and boast price tags of hundreds of millions of dollars. They come equipped with state of the art technology, and they’re often made with the finest materials and sumptuous fittings. 

If you don’t want to buy one, you can lease them from numerous brokers that specialize in yacht rental. However, going down that route will still cost you around a quarter of a million dollars a week – at least.

Ultimately, superyachts are intensely unique, with each one differing dramatically from the next. They’re designed and built on a case-by-case basis, a process that often features architects, interior designers, and engineers. 

This is why some superyachts become incredibly prolific, with ‘fans’ actively trying to spot them when they’re out around the world’s oceans. For example, yacht hunting is a common activity in places like Monaco, Sardinia, Portofino, Saint-Tropez, and Abu Dhabi.

There’s little restriction surrounding the piloting of these superyachts, and they’re more or less open to travel wherever they so desire. Of course, this means they’ll sometimes have to contend with some of the world’s biggest oceans.

Advance Across The Atlantic

While the Atlantic Ocean might seem like a daunting thing to cross, it’s actually an extremely common thing to do. Every day, hundreds of vessels make the crossing, including cargo ships, passenger liners, and military vessels. 

This traffic also includes numerous superyachts, ferrying wealthy passengers and owners from Europe to the United States. Alternatively, they could be traveling from the Caribbean to Africa, or Canada to the United Kingdom. 

It’s ultimately up to the owner where the superyacht travels, and as long as they have enough fuel in the tank, the Atlantic doesn’t pose much of an obstacle. It is a long crossing, true, but they’ll be doing it in some of the most luxurious circumstances possible. 

It can take anything from ten days to three weeks to successfully navigate the Atlantic Ocean. If the conditions are fair and the ship’s course doesn’t have to be altered too much, the journey will be much faster. 

There are some superyachts that can make the crossing on a single tank of fuel, without breaking a sweat. At the higher end of the spectrum, this includes the Azzam , one of the largest yachts in the world with a value of almost half a billion dollars.

Azzam is powered by enormous and economical engines that produce a cruising speed of around eighteen knots. It’s such a huge superyacht that one hundred people can comfortably live aboard, all at the same time. 

Quite simply, it’s one of the most luxurious and opulent vessels in the world, with a drastic amount of amenities and technology. Before Azzam was launched in 2013, more than four thousand people were involved in her construction. 

This is just one of a few superyachts that can cross the Atlantic with ease. In fact, there’s a whole category of superyacht built to travel extremely long distances. 

They’re known as ‘explorer’ yachts, and they’re specially designed to travel in the more adverse conditions, and across the widest oceans. The best example is the Octopus , a 126-meter superyacht with a value of three hundred million dollars.

If you’re going to cross any super-wide ocean paths, there are few better ways to do it than in one of these vessels.

Some people can't simply settle for a regular, run-of-the-mill superyacht like all the other millionaires and billionaires — they need something a bit flashier to set them apart from the crowd. 

For those people, there are yachts like Adastra , a sleek, custom-built trimaran that's currently on the market for a cool $12 million. 

The extravagant vessel — which looks less like a yacht and more like something out of "Star Wars" — is built for exploration, according to Burgess Yachts , which has the boat listed for sale. Due to its streamlined shape and lightweight construction, Adastra can travel across the Atlantic twice over without needing to refuel. Plus, Adastra's unique design means it can venture into shallow harbors and get up close to islands, unlike most traditional yachts.

But this multimillion-dollar yacht is built for pleasure, too — it sports multiple sunbathing areas, a diving platform, a lavish main room, three cabins for guests, and space for six crew members.

Commissioned in 2012 by shipping tycoon Anto Marden at a cost of at least $20 million, according to Robb Report, the trimaran yacht was built to cover vast distances and cross oceans.

Thanks to its efficient shape, lightweight construction, and 15,000-liter fuel capacity, Adastra boasts a range of 10,000 nautical miles, or roughly 11,500 miles.

That means the 140-foot ship can cross the Atlantic twice over without having to refuel, and its owner has done just that, he told Robb Report.

Plus, the yacht sits less than four feet below the water line, so it can venture into shallow harbors where traditional yachts can't.

The story of 106m Black Pearl's long-awaited sail across the Atlantic

It’s taken five years for this groundbreaking yacht to show the world what she’s really made of. So was it worth the wait? Holly Overton gets the inside track from her captain and crew.

Black Pearl was designed to push the boundaries of technology and what was thought to be possible for a 106.7-metre under sail. But even for her captain, Christian Truter, carving through the busy waters of St Barths at 14 knots was a bold move. She was an unexpected guest and her fashionably late arrival to New Year’s celebrations caused quite the stir. “We were heeled over, full sail set, blitzing the anchorage between all the boats,” Truter recalls. This was the first time Black Pearl had ever seen this side of the Atlantic, and she wanted to let the world know she had arrived.

It took six years, a visionary owner, and an army of designers, architects and engineers to build Black Pearl . When she was finally delivered in 2018, she was the largest sailing yacht in the world and by far the most technologically advanced. She was built to cross oceans but, up until last year, had barely strayed from Europe.

“The original plan was to sail around the world,” explains Derek Munro, the owner’s representative. “The owner wanted to show the boat off and show the technology to as many people as possible.” She is essentially a wind-driven power plant with three freestanding masts and 2,900 square metres of sail. Her revolutionary DynaRig was a significant advancement on Maltese Falcon , with 25 per cent more sail area, electric rotating spars that made her more manoeuvrable and a hinged rig that reduces her air draught so she could pass through the Panama Canal. Then there is all the stuff you can’t see: variable-pitch propellers which can produce enough energy to power the hotel load under sail or recharge the batteries, allowing her to cross oceans without burning a litre of fuel; her waste heat recovery system is perhaps the most advanced ever seen on board a private vessel; and her spars, yards and superstructure are even wired for solar.

After the shakedown from the Oceanco shipyard in the Netherlands to Gibraltar, she entered a long warranty period. “There were still some technical elements that needed finishing and [the owner] wasn’t in a hurry. He wanted things to be perfect and he was happy to take the time to do that,” explains Captain Truter. When she finally set sail, Black Pearl logged some serious miles in the Mediterranean, bouncing between Gibraltar and Cyprus, before heading into the North Sea around the tip of Denmark and up into the Baltics.

Any plans for a global tour were put on pause during the Covid-19 pandemic, which kept her bound to Europe. But it was the unexpected death of her owner in 2021 that put Black Pearl in a renewed state of limbo. She sat on the dock in Montenegro for more than a year, occasionally running training sails with the crew, so that when the call eventually came in, they could drop lines and go. That is the beauty of the DynaRig. There are no sheets to run, no stays, no winches, no heavy sails to heave across the deck or covers to remove. You could be off an anchorage with sails set in just seven minutes.

“The boat has been getting prepped to go to the Caribbean for a long time. There was a false start the year before, but this year we knew we were going,” says Truter. She checked into the Adriatic42 shipyard in Montenegro at the beginning of November for her five-year class survey in preparation.

“Winter in the Mediterranean, particularly in the Adriatic, you spend a lot of time watching the weather. It was serendipity that we had a window opening up to dodge low-pressure systems that also aligned with our survey,” says Truter. The last contractors stepped off the boat at 5pm on November 24 and by 8pm the crew was dropping lines and heading to Albania to bunker.

“We sailed across the boot of Italy and up through Messina, and because of the wind – we had 40-plus knots – we hugged the coast of Italy. Once we got up around Capri, we did a beautiful bear away and, with wind on the quarter, sailed towards Bonifacio,” Truter explains. They were chasing the incoming mistral in the Golfe du Lion. “We threw a dart onto the chart at which point we expected the wind to come in on the mistral. And pretty much on that point, we ended up with 40 to 50 knots of wind. We bore away, shortened sail and sailed at 15 knots towards Menorca.”

A brief stop in Palma saw the conclusion of a few inspection items left over from the survey in Montenegro and some time spent poring over weather charts. “It had been a weird year in the Atlantic with a lot of unsettled low- pressure systems quite far south disrupting the Azores high and not really providing great crossing weather. As we were sitting there it looked like a pattern was forming to give us reinforced trades from just south of the Canaries if we hustled,” says Truter.

The crew made haste for Tenerife, where they picked up a couple of stowaways, Munro and the former captain, Chris Gartner, and were soon heading south to catch the weather system that was opening up. “We motor-sailed for a day towards 22 [degrees] north, and as soon as we got into the wind, around 23 [degrees] north, we turned off the engines and set full sail. We sailed the whole way to St Barths from there.”

Reinforced trade winds effectively slingshot them across the Atlantic. The wind was in the high thirties and she was cantering along at up to 19 knots. “We would have gone faster but we were spinning props to create electricity so we could turn our generators off,” says Truter. It is a careful balancing act. Running the regeneration system robs her of a couple of knots but feeds energy back into the vessel. At the same time, they needed pace to stay ahead of the weather system that was nipping at the transom.

Most of the helming is done from the two large wheels on the flybridge with the wheelhouse used only on occasion. And if there is bad weather? “You put your foulies on and get a cup of coffee,” says chief officer Matthew Hopkins.

Black Pearl left Montenegro with 22 crew and collected a few more en route. The 12-day transatlantic overlapped with the festive period and the crew spent Christmas and New Year’s Eve at sea. For almost half of those on board, it was their first Atlantic crossing. “There may have been a ritual,” laughs Truter. “King Neptune [aka Gartner] definitely made himself present.”

On Christmas Eve, Black Pearl caught up to a solo rower competing in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. The crew gathered on the flybridge to sing him We Wish You a Merry Christmas. And the morning after, they had a visit from Santa Claus, aka Munro.

Black Pearl was underway for 20.5 days from Montenegro to St Barths. She sailed more than 80 per cent of the way, averaging 11 knots, and consumed 32,000 litres of fuel over 5,600 nautical miles. (A conventional 100-metre motor yacht would burn around 10,000 litres a day.)

The arrival of Black Pearl into St Barths on January 2 was a poignant moment, particularly for Chris Gartner. Steering from the flybridge with sights on the anchorage, Truter handed the helm to Gartner, who had been Black Pearl’s captain and custodian from the build until last year when he left to join a new project. The journey marked the end of a chapter in his career and the start of a new one for Black Pearl .

With a renewed sense of adventure, Black Pearl is set to welcome others to experience her power and prowess for the first time as she joins the charter fleet. She will offer charterers a unique “Eco Mode” option where the boat will waive any fuel costs to those who agree to mostly sail and, when engine power is necessary, only use the electric motors at a maximum speed of 11 knots.

At the time of writing , Black Pearl is back in the Med but plans to return to the Caribbean. Having completed her first – and now second – Atlantic crossings, the crew are resolute in their commitment to the mission started by her late owner: to cross oceans and leave the smallest possible footprint. “As with any yacht you want to see them out on the ocean chewing up the miles and going to different places,” says Munro. “This was our first big voyage and hopefully the start of many, many more.”

Crossing the Atlantic on a Yacht in Comfort

Our route across the Atlantic was predetermined by Hurricane Matthew and later Hurricane Nicole. My first intention was to take the northern or Great Circle route from Gibraltar to Azores and Fort Lauderdale. But it soon became clear that to avoid the troubled weather, the best option would be to take a more southerly course, stopping in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and St Maarten before proceeding to Florida.

The first leg: Gibraltar to Tenerife

• Duration: 2 days

• Winds: 15–25kn, Mainly on Port Quarter and Stern

• Seas: slight to moderate

• Speed: 14–17kn

The only reason why we had to reduce speed was because I wanted to arrive in Santa Cruz de Tenerife during daylight hours. In these sea conditions, there are no restrictions on how fast the yacht can travel and 30 knots would have been possible.

The second leg: Tenerife to St Maarten

• Duration: 8 days

• Winds: 5–25kn, variable

• Seas: slight to moderate. Hurricane Matthew produced 3m swells on the starboard beam, period 10-12 seconds.   

• Speed: 13–15kn

A few days out from St Maarten I couldn’t resist the temptation to test the yacht’s handling in the big swell. We turned north into the waves around at 14.5 knots and expected some pounding. Nothing! I then slowly started to increase RPM.

This was clearly boys’ stuff and after reaching 21 knots with still no pounding, the chief engineer walked onto the bridge. I expected him to complain about something, but all he said was “Captain, I think we should clean the pipes and get rid of some soot.”

This was the clear green light I was waiting for. At a comfortable 10-degree rudder angle, Galactica Super Nova turned gracefully in the swell onto the reciprocal southerly course. "Oh my," said the chief, or words to that effect, as I started pushing the Roll Royce levers further forward. 

At this point I am no longer looking at any instruments, only the massive waves we are surfing and occasionally the speed. With only the two outboard main engines the yacht made 29.1 knots and I’m certain that with the central booster jet we would have surpassed 35 knots. I even tried out a little kite surfing in mid-Atlantic!

The third leg: St Maarten to Ft Lauderdale

• Duration: 2 days, 8 hours

• Winds: 10–24kn, mainly aft and on the nose.

• Seas: Slight to moderate

• Speed: 14–22kn

Most of the trip was run at around 20 knots. Our last night out was with shorter set of waves of 1–1.5m from dead ahead and we had to reduce down to 14.5 knots. I decided to alter course toward the lee of Bahamian islands.

The whole crew was slightly irritated with this reduction in speed and complained about her performance against the short set. I had to remind them that we are still running at 14.5 knots against 1-1.5m seas with no discomfort, something most superyachts in her class would not be able to do.   

We were all spoiled with the speed and handling of Galactica Super Nova and have fallen under her spell. I cannot praise the performance of the yacht enough. This is once special girl! How could I ever work on a regular 16-knot displacement yacht again?

The best route for an Atlantic crossing? It depends when you go

Weather is a large part of any Atlantic crossing: deciding when to go, which route to follow and the sails to carry. The main consideration is to avoid the hurricane season from June to November, so most yachts leave in late November to arrive in time for Christmas, although the tradewinds in January are often stronger.

However, it is human nature to push boundaries and some crews always leave early to get a longer season. The earlier you leave, though, the more important it is to stay east before committing to a westerly course. Late hurricanes generally develop to the west, making a passage via the Cape Verde islands more attractive. It shortens the time in potential hurricane areas and offers an escape route south as hurricanes rarely track south of 10°N.

Flexible sailplan

During a typical crossing, the tradewinds will be Force 4 or 5, with some lighter periods and a few days of winds of 25-plus knots. A flexible sailplan is necessary to take account of the changing wind strengths – there is no one-size-fits-all answer. The most common sailplan is goosewinged, with most skippers carrying a specialist downwind sail for when the wind goes light.

Because squalls are common and can have gale-force gusts on the leading edge, it is important to be able to reduce sail quickly. Boats with only asymmetric spinnakers tend to struggle in strong downwind conditions and I would always carry a whisker pole to pole out a headsail as well.

Sailing hot angles may work for a lightweight flyer, but it adds a lot of distance. For a heavier cruising boat it is hard to gain the increase in speed to compensate for the extra distance. Once hull speed is reached, shorter will always be faster. ( See our feature on the best yacht for an Atlantic crossing )

North is fastest

With well-established high pressure, a direct (that is, northerly) route is usually fastest, staying far enough away from the high to keep the wind, but minimising distance. However, the less established the high is, the greater the chance of a mid-Atlantic trough or low developing, giving adverse winds. In this case a more southerly route is better.

Racing boats often take the northerly route and the faster the boat, the more likely this will pay off. However, it runs the risk of meeting depressions which develop mid-Atlantic.

These should not be underestimated and the potential gain of passing north of a depression must be balanced against the risk that it could deepen and track across the route. The route is also more prone to a northerly swell.

The southerly route, on the other hand, offers lower risk, with steadier tradewinds and less chance of an uncomfortable northerly swell.

When does the engine go on?

I like to arrive with at least one-third of my fuel left for safety. Others will put on the engine when the wind drops and call in at Cape Verde to refuel if necessary. The choice of route may also depend on fuel capacity and a crew’s willingness to use the engine.

A mid-Atlantic trough giving 24-48 hours of light wind is not unusual and can be motored through to keep on schedule. Yet for some crews, the engine is only for emergencies and a more southerly route will reduce the risk of light winds. Neither route is right or wrong. I have sailed across the Atlantic over 20 times and no two times have been the same. There can be a great deal of variation and weather forecasts are important. There needs to be some flexibility in the route to take account of forecasts and how they change over time. I like to pick up weather charts from NOAA and also GRIB files.

So, the default options are: go south for comfort and safety; go north for speed. Most boats take a more middle route, depending on the forecast.

The fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic faces eviction from a pier

The fastest ocean liner to ever cross the Atlantic — in both directions — has been languishing at a pier in south Philadelphia for more than twenty-five years. However, the days of the rusting SS United States calling at Pier 82 in the City of Brotherly Love are likely numbered. The 990 ft. ship that's bigger than the Titanic is facing eviction.

On her maiden voyage in 1952, the SS United States won the coveted Blue Riband from Great Britain. What came to be called "America's Flagship" crossed the Atlantic in 3 days, 10 hours, and 40 minutes — besting the time set by the RMS Queen Mary by 10 hours. To this day, the SS United States holds the record.

That speed is no accident; the U.S. government helped pay for the ship. If the Cold War had heated up, the vessel could've quickly been converted to a troopship that could carry some 14,000 soldiers 10,000 miles without refueling.

In spite of the once classified design elements that went into the ship and a who's who of glamorous passengers that included stars and presidents, the vessel's retirement has seen it stare down scrapping a few times.

The latest threat, and potentially most dire, is a lawsuit from Pier 82's landlord.

"The lawsuit was brought by Penn Warehousing to evict the ship and to collect some $700,000 — $800,000 worth of what they allege was back rent," says Warren Jones.

He's a board member of the SS United States Conservancy , the nonprofit that's owned and overseen the vessel since 2011. He also sailed on the ship when he was 7 years old in 1961.

The conservancy claims Penn Warehousing unjustly doubled the rent during the pandemic for keeping the huge ship at Pier 82. The daily cost of mooring the vessel along the Delaware River jumped from $850 to $1,700.

"The rental agreement that they wrote and presented to us had no provision in it for escalating the rent and it even had no time limit on the lease as well," says Jones.

The ship was already at Pier 82 when the conservancy bought the vessel and entered into the agreement more than a decade ago.

Neither Penn Warehousing nor their attorneys responded to requests for comment.

Both sides argued their case before a federal judge, and the fate of the ship now rests in the hands of the court. Even if the conservancy prevails and the vessel can remain at Pier 82, the writing is on the wall.

"The ship needs a new home," says Susan Gibbs, the head of the SS United States Conservancy and the granddaughter of its designer, famed naval architect William Francis Gibbs.

Standing on the bridge of the mothballed ocean liner, taking in the view of the ship's sleek lines and sharp bow, Gibbs says the vessel's moment has come.

"She's ready to bust a move," Gibbs says. "She's been here long enough; she's ready to go to the next port of call."

While the conservancy has a multi-million dollar redevelopment plan for the ship that would see it return to the base of its transatlantic operations in Manhattan, that next port of call is a big question mark.

"There are a number of different possibilities, and we are open to any of them at this point," says Gibbs. "Time is of the essence."

New York, Florida, even staying in Philly have all been floated as possible options for where the ship may go. The conservancy said it would be open to the prospect of the West Coast if a space that could accommodate the liner could be found.

After decades of exposure to the elements, the SS United States looks every day of her 72 years. Rust has tinted vast swaths of the ship a ruddy hue, and the hull looks scaly and reptilian because of the flaking black paint. The vessel may be lacking cosmetically, but she's still got it where it counts.

"What's encouraging is that despite the peeling paint and the rust that we see as we are walking down the halls of the ship, she is still structurally sound," Gibbs says.

Her fellow conservancy member, Warren Jones, also says that while the ship could use more than a nip and a tuck on the outside, the bones are solid.

"The hull of the ship has been inspected over and over and over again at various points, and all the reports come back and it's in remarkable good shape," says Jones. "You just feel the solid structure of the ship as you walk these decks."

Although the public hasn't had access to the vessel for ages, the conservancy is hoping the ship's next chapter has it full of life once again. Initially drawn up with New York City in mind, Jones says the redevelopment plan of the ship could be made to fit any port that'll have her. Along with a specialized dock for the old liner, the plan would transform the SS United States itself.

"It includes a refurbishment of the ship, entertainment venues, dining, a thousand-key hotel onboard," says Jones.

All of that, however, is up in the air. If the ship gets evicted, the conservancy believes the vessel could be lost forever. Berths for thousand-foot ocean liners that can't power themselves and have been out of operation since the Nixon administration aren't readily available. So, the conservancy has taken an unprecedented step.

"We have issued an appeal to the president and a number of congressional leaders," says Gibbs. "The time has come. This ship is imperiled, and it's all hands on deck."

The three-page letter addressed to President Biden succinctly lays out the vessel's storied history and the potential for repurposing it. The conservancy is so concerned the end may be near, it would be open to gifting the ship to the government: "The Conservancy is even willing to donate the ship to the National Park Service, the state of Pennsylvania, or other entities in exchange for a viable pier location."

The vessel's champions are clear-eyed that "America's Flagship" doesn't have much time left in Philly. If it's evicted, there's no telling if the next port of call is a safe haven or the scrap heap.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
