Tavern of the seas – the royal cape yacht club.

T T he Royal Cape Yacht Club, based in Cape Town, is closely associated with the city’s seafaring culture and has been a home from home for visiting sailors since 1905.

Look down on Table Bay from Signal Hill on a Wednesday evening between October and March and you’ll see a scattering of sails fluttering out in the bay.

This is the regular Wednesday night regatta, hosted by the Royal Cape Yacht Club, and an event that is as much part of the Cape summer scene as the south- easter that sends white clouds pouring over Table Mountain.

The club, based in the Table Bay Harbour , is closely associated with the city’s seafaring culture, harking back to the days when the city was known as the Tavern of the Seas, a place where sailors could unwind after many days at sea on the route between Europe and the East.

The Royal Cape Yacht Club continues this tradition by offering around-the-world sailors a place to moor their yachts and to meet members of the local yachting community.

The club started out life in a humble boat shed at the foot of Loop Street back in 1905 , before a landfill project extended the city centre into an area now known as the Foreshore. It received the Royal Charter shortly after 1914 and moved into its present premises at the Small Craft Basin inside the harbour a decade after World War II.

However, it was only after the inaugural Trans-Atlantic Cape to Rio yacht race in 1971 that yachting in the city really took off. Today, the club’s membership hovers around the 1   700-mark, the adjacent marina offers moorings for over 4 00 yachts, and the club is the centre of the city’s amateur yachting community and the base for a sailing academy.

Visit on any given day and you’ll more than likely find a few 'yachties' messing about on their boats, a couple of international visitors passing through and some local folk catching up with each other over a beer.

The club is housed in an unassuming, low-slung building featuring a restaurant and sunny outdoor terrace overlooking the marina, a bar, visitors' lounge, offices and several venues, like the Galley, Chartroom and Regatta Centre, which are rented out for parties and conferences.

Although it’s members’ only, you may enter as a guest of a member, or you can take out a short-term membership for the duration of your stay in Cape Town. (And, no, you don’t have to own a yacht.)

Over the years, the club has played host to several international yachting events, among them the Whitbread, Volvo and Hong Kong Challenge.

Royal Cape Yacht Club

yacht club cape town

The Club was founded as the Table Bay Yacht Club in 1905 and commenced operation as such in a waterside boatshed located some 50 to 60 metres northward of the foot of Loop Street. Surviving early vicissitudes, the club’s name was changed in 1914 to the Cape Yacht Club which incorporated the Alfred Rowing Club and shortly after we received the Royal Charter to become the Royal Cape Yacht Club.

Buffeted by change we moved from clubhouse to clubhouse, and it was not until the decade after the 2nd World War (1939 – 1945) that the shell of the present clubhouse came to be erected. It was added to when the local yachting boom – started by the first Trans-Atlantic Race from Cape Town to Rio de Janeiro in 1971 – took off and changed the Club from a small membership of around 300 to the present figure of some 3000.

Boat accommodation was forced to progress from swing moorings to the marina’s of today. Likewise control had to pass from amateur committees to the professional staff which you will find today. The Royal Cape Yacht Club sits at the foot of Africa, a quiet enclave tucked away in the bustle of Cape Town’s docks. It is a prime location for sailors looking for respite from stormy weather and the club has hosted thousands of weary sailors over the years.

New Cape Coral Yacht Club designs: Most on council like a coastal, Key West vibe

yacht club cape town

Given three different design options for the new Yacht Club Community Center , most of the Cape Coral City Council is leaning toward a coastal, Key West-flavor architecture.

At a committee of the whole meeting on Wednesday, the city sought direction from the council on a design direction for the outside of the community building.

"It's a concept, just like we do with anything else, and as we are designing, things may come up that we want to shift and be nimble (on)," said Cape Coral City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn.

James Pankonin with Kimley Horn, a consulting firm focusing on public and private developments, presented the information about the look of the community building.

Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park, which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has been a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s but is set to undergo major renovations after Hurricane Ian delayed the original plans .

The current plans include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.

The city is also preparing for the demolition of the Yacht Club and its facilities in April as it awaits permits.

No estimates could be provided for the price of the new building.

"It will really come into how much of certain materials are needed and construction methods," Ilczyszyn said.

The city will have that information once they have 30% of the construction design.

Two public meetings for the designs are planned for April 2 and May 7.

After getting public input, the city will vote to amend its contract with Kimley Horn to approve all these changes.

The plan is to have these changes approved or introduced before the summer hiatus.

New Designs for the Yacht Club building

John Bryant with Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors, a Sarasota-based design firm, said the goal with the new designs was to maintain the experience of the original Yacht Club.

The majority of the council preferred option one.

Design one:

Bryant described the first option as "coastal vernacular" and similar to the park buildings at Lake Kennedy and Yellow Fever Creek.

"So it's sort of informed by the current architectural work in 2024," Bryant said. "Kinda Key West."

Councilmember Dan Sheppard and Mayor John Gunter preferred option one.

Gunter said the design was the most pleasing for him.

Councilmember Keith Long liked option one and said he liked the Key West aesthetic.

Councilmember Tom Hayden liked option one.

Design two:

Option two is more informed by the current Yacht Club and would have a stone base and mid-century feel to it, according to Bryant.

"There's certainly opportunity to kind of further develop this option to have even more of the existing Yacht Club feel, but a different vibe, feel than option one," Bryant said.

He also said option two might be more expressive the closer they try to recreate the aesthetic of the old ballroom building.

Councilmember Jessica Cosden liked design two as it incorporated design elements of the old building though she lamented how similar it looked to the first design.

"I wish we could have done more, but I know it's hard with a two-story building, to make it look the same as a very unique one-story building.

Councilmember Bill Steinke said two would be his choice as well, but was wary of additional maintenance of natural wood products used in the design.

"As long as we can bring that aesthetic and keep the maintenance down, number two would be my choice," Steinke said.

Councilmember Robert Welsh said he could go either way, but he liked the look of two.

Design three:

This would be more contemporary and modern.

"Even with a more contemporary language, you can still have warmth, incorporating some wood elements and stone elements," Bryant said.

None of the council members expressed any favorability for the third design.

Inside the new community center

The Community Center will have an additional 10,000 square feet for a total of 47,000 square feet, a history room to remember the first ballroom building on the first floor, and more rooms for civic and community use on the first floor.

Additionally, the new ballroom has shifted slightly as the balcony area on the second floor has been expanded to wrap around the top of the building.

Council will review new design plans for Yacht Club

On Wednesday, council members will review design options for the new structures and amenities that will go on the property.

The yacht club opened in 1962 and was the gathering place for the first residents of the city.

“I think the bigger, the better for the city hall area, with more rooms and more opportunity,” said Shadrach.

Larger design proposed for Yacht Club rebuild

By meghan bradbury - | mar 12, 2024.

yacht club cape town

Revised plans for the Cape Coral Yacht Club rebuild now call for a much-larger community center with a whole new design and a four-story parking garage.

Cape Coral City Council will discuss the latest rendition of the Yacht Club masterplan at a workshop Wednesday morning.

The revised Community Center floor plan now includes a total of 47,000 square feet, with the majority being on the first floor for 27,250 square feet and the remainder, 19,750, spread out on the second floor. The prior square footage was 37,000 square feet – 20,000 square feet on the first floor, and 17,000 square feet on the second.

The largest space will be the multipurpose hall, 4,751 square feet on the first floor. Other areas are to include two medium and large meeting rooms, one small meeting room, history room, storage, retail concession, administration, foyer, receiving and loading and restrooms.

The second floor will also have meeting space, four small and two medium spaces, restrooms, kitchen, balcony, foyer and a 4,982-square-foot area to be called the ballroom, the name of the main community room in the historic building to be torn down and replaced.

yacht club cape town

The revised site plan includes a pool restroom near the riverfront beach, service access, pool equipment and lifeguard building and a pool entry station.

The presentation to be made by staff also includes three design options for the Community Center.

Also on the agenda:

The Cape Coral Animal Shelter expansion project is also slated for discussion during the workshop. The expansion includes a two-story building – 19,797 square feet – on their allocated 4.2-acres near Sun Splash Family Waterpark. The first floor will be comprised of 16,789 square feet and 3,008 square feet on the second floor.

The building would house kennels, cat rooms, adoption area, offices, laundry, storage and a multi-purpose room for events, training, and classes, as well as camp activities, school trips and education.

yacht club cape town

There would also be an additional 48 parking spaces for total of 93.

The current building would be used to expand the low-cost veterinary clinic and the current kennels would become dog intake/quarantine only.

The animal shelter also is requesting the city to allow them to add an adjacent city-owned parcel — .339 acres to increase their parcel to 4.53 acres, which would be used for an animal play area and additional training.

According to the presentation, the appraised value currently for the 4.2 acres is $595,000. That would increase to $645,000 for the 4.53 acres.

The estimated fee for the expansion project is $64,747.38.

The City Council workshop will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, in City Council chambers, 1015 Cultural Park Blvd. The meeting is open to the public.

World’s largest residential yacht docks in Durban

D urban — The largest private residential yacht on Earth, where its residents travel the globe without ever leaving home, arrived in Durban on Saturday.

The yacht, with 165 luxury residences, has a diverse group of more than 150 residents from 20 countries, including South Africa. They all own the homes onboard and share interests in world cultures, history and adventure, and exploring fascinating destinations.

The 165 apartments range from studios to three-bedroom units.

The vessel, aptly named “The World”, is in Durban as part of its six-continent itinerary. It docked in Cape Town before it headed to Mossel Bay, and now, Durban.

While in Durban, residents will have the opportunity to visit the Drakensberg Heliflight and have lunch, encounter the region's culture, crafts and art at the bustling Victoria Street Market and Muthi Market, followed by a private guided visit to the extraordinary Phansi Museum and the KwaZulu-Natal Society of Arts, as well as visit Phinda Game Reserve.

The ship’s golfing enthusiasts look forward to a day at Zimbali Country Club. Resident owners of this private community at sea enjoy the combination of enriching travel to more than 100 ports of call a year, complemented by world-class amenities and state-of-the-art facilities.

Before docking in Cape Town last week, residents of The World enjoyed an expedition to Antarctica, where they traced the footsteps of famed polar explorers.

The ship had also journeyed to South America including Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and the virtually untouched volcanic islands of Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic Ocean before arriving in Cape Town.

South Africa is a favoured destination among residents, having visited on seven previous occasions. Several South African families call The World home.

“We, as shareholders, decide and establish the ship’s annual itinerary of countries to visit well in advance, and include expeditions to remote areas.

“In my opinion, having a private apartment on The World is far better than, and less challenging than, the responsibilities associated with private ownership of one’s own super yacht,” said one of the South African residents who declined to be named.

While in Cape Town, residents and guests explored the Cape Winelands, the city’s thriving art scene and a hike up Lion’s Head.

The World will leave South Africa for Mozambique, Zanzibar and Kenya before docking for a week in the Seychelles.

Residents of The World will thereafter visit Asia for four months, exploring Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bali and Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay.

This mega yacht has world-class amenities and facilities that include six restaurants, golf facilities with on-board putting greens, a state-of-the-art golf simulator and pro, the only full-size, regulation tennis court at sea, swimming pools, a spa, a fitness centre complete with personal trainers, expert destination lecturers, library, cinema, hobby and games rooms, and more.
