yachtmaster

An RYA / MCA Yachtmaster® needs a wealth of knowledge, not only to cope with plain sailing or motor cruising, but also to be able to cope in more demanding situations.

Yachtmaster ® is split into two grades -Yachtmaster ® Coastal & Yachtmaster ® Offshore.   There is no 'Yachtmaster Course' so-to-speak - you have to be at the required standard already through your own experience.    Once you think you have the necessary experience and knowledge, you can apply to book a 5 Day RYA Yachtmaster ® Preparation Course + RYA / MCA Examination.

You will spend a Sunday to a Thursday afternoon, preparing for your RYA / MCA Yachtmaster ® Examination, getting used to the yacht , crew (who are other RYA Trainees), and practicing your sailing and navigation techniques with an experienced ScotSail ® Yachtmaster ® Offshore Instructo r.

The examiner is an independent RYA / MCA Examiner, booked and chosen by ScotSail ® - if you wish you can speak to your Examiner beforehand - nobody is trying to trick you or trip you up and everything you might be asked is straightforward and open.

The exam will normally take place from about 1600hrs on a Thursday, thus giving you time to practice before, and so that the exam can start in the day-time, and then proceed into darkness.  There can be up to 4 candidates on an Exam at any time.

Before the exam starts, your Examiner will greet you, and will want to sit down to have a chat with you to determine your previous experience, and check that you have the pre-requisite certifications and logged experience - it is your responsibility to ensure that you have everything required, and we would advise that you check this info at www.rya.org.uk .

The Yachtmaster® Preparation courses are 5 Days & Nights / Full Board (Sun-Fri) with Check-In/ Arrival from 1800hrs on Sundays, at our LargsCentre.   Each night is spent on board in cabins, at a different island / location / marina, in the Firth of Clyde & Islands sailing area.    Sailing exercises take place during the day, and there is plenty of opportunity to visit local attractions and go ashore to visit islands and villages.   You will certainly experience longer passages, navigation exercises and night-sails.   There is an external examination, and only a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Instructor may lead this preparation course.

Where Do We Go? On a RYA Yachtmaster Sailing Course in Scotland from ScotSail?

One of the great advantages of a ScotSail® Yachtmaster® Prep Course is that you and your crew can choose where you want to go.

A typical course or experience will entail leaving our centre at Largs Yacht Haven and engaging in sailing activities and training during the day , whilst en route to a destination - that you will decide.   A Yachtmaster® needs to be able to get the boat and crew from A - B, and then to C - safely and probably through more challenging waters and passages than a Coastal Skipper would be expected to.

You and your crew will be completely involved in the decisions about where to travel to - and how to get there.   This is all part of the course, is vital learning and all part of the fun!    There are plenty of places to travel to - Isle of Arran , Kyles and Isle of Bute, Rothesay, Tartbert, Portavadie, Holy Loch, Rhu, Loch Long and Loch Riddon to name just a few - you can't explore it all in just one week!

Experience stunning mountains , castles, whales, dolphins , seals and birdlife - even sail past Royal Navy submarines and other interesting marine traffic too!

Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore Preparation and Exam

The RYA/MCA Coastal Skipper / Offshore Certificate of Competence Exam preparation course is designed to act as a refresher on all aspects of boat handling, passage planning, pilotage, boat safety, and general skippering ability.  There will be opportunities to practice and hone skills such as night passage making and boat handling in confined spaces, as well as opportunites to refresh theory aspects likely to come up in the exam.

There is no set syllabus for the YM Preparation course, as content is driven by the candidates requirements, but the course is designed to bring experienced coastal skipper candidates to a level where they will be able to sit the RYA YM coastal or Offshore exam.  During the exam, candidates will be asked to demonstrate a variety of skills to an examiner over a day, and there will be a night pilotage exercise.

At each stage of the preparation week your instructor will give you feedback and advice allowing candidates to develop skills in advance of the Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore exam.

Yachtmaster Offshore Training

The IYT Worldwide Yachtmaster Offshore certificate is a recreational certificate of competency to command sailing and/or power vessels up to 24 metres in length up to 150 nm offshore. It is a comprehensive theory and live aboard course consisting of five days classroom theory and a practical component of six days for sail or five days for power including the practical on the water examination. The minimum age to obtain this certification is 18. Candidates must either hold a recognised VHF Radio Operators Certificate or must take the full IYT VHF-SRC Marine Communications course and school must place order for this certificate while placing order for the Yachtmaster Certificate of Competency.  If ordering VHF at the same time as Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate please upload a note to this effect.  We have provided a sample note to upload when placing order. * Please note that we do not accept ISSA VHF qualifications.  (I f you are unsure if your radio license will be accepted, please send a scanned copy of the front and back of your license to [email protected] .  We will verify that your license is sufficient to receive the IYT Yachtmaster Offshore license).

The courses are designed to provide the highest standard of maritime education for the recreational yachtsman and woman and for those who are serious about obtaining the best nautical qualifications available. They are ideal for those who greatly want to expand their knowledge and experience and increase their confidence in commanding a yacht. For those who are taking the courses, completion of the five-day STCW Basic Safety training courses is not required but highly recommended. The five-day STCW course covers Firefighting, Sea Survival, First Aid and Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities.

It has come to our attention that it has not been made perfectly clear to all IYT Worldwide yachtmaster candidates that this certification is for recreational use only and may never be upgraded to a professional certificate. Therefore, we require all candidates taking a recreational IYT Worldwide Yachtmaster Coastal, Offshore or Ocean course to complete an acknowledgement prior to taking the course.

It is important to understand that an IYT certificate is a qualification that can be used across the globe. Therefore, unlike other training organisations, IYT insists on an understanding of IALA Regulations in Areas A & B, weather systems in the North & Southern hemispheres, tidal calculations for the Mediterranean and North America and the effects of tropical revolving storms.

Yachtmaster courses are not for beginners. This six-day comprehensive high-level shore based course includes assessment papers and written examinations. Candidates are advised that a considerable amount of private study and varied cruising experience is required in addition to the formal instruction provided.

IYT’s Yachtmaster Offshore Sail Certificate covers command of a sailing vessel with a sail area of greater than 80 square metres/861 square feet. Please see the official statement here .

Certificate Limitations

  • Command of a vessel up to 24 meters in length
  • up to 150 miles offshore
  • not for commercial use
Note: Yachtmaster Offshore is a recreational course that can be taught in any language BUT cannot be upgraded to the professional Master of Yachts certificate.

What are the minimum entry requirements to apply for the IYT Yachtmaster Offshore course?

1. 50 days on board a yacht at sea as an active crew member. A day is defined as a period of 24 consecutive hours. Parts of a day may be included in this total, but a day is not invalidated by a candidate leaving the yacht for a few hours during a cruise. The term “at sea” is defined as being on a vessel outside of any harbour – natural or artificial – in which a cruising yacht could secure or anchor for a prolonged period of time.

2. Have logged 3,000 miles in a yacht while cruising at sea (power or sail). This mileage must be logged on genuine cruises or passages but not short day trips. At least 2,000 miles must have been completed on coastal voyages and not ocean crossings. It is important that the candidate has considerable time of actual vessel handling.

3. Thirty hours on watch at night underway as an active member of a yacht’s crew. For at least six hours of this night time experience, the candidate must have been acting as the vessel’s captain/watchleader. “Night,” in this context, is defined as the time between sunset and sunrise.

4. A current medical examination and a colour blindness eyesight examination, which allows the participant to safely perform the relevant duties on a yacht, including being able to see and distinguish lights and signals of other vessels and navigational marks in typical weather conditions without risk to him/herself, other crewmembers or the safe operation of the vessel.

5. A six-hour VHF Radio Operators course covering the general rules and procedures for the safe operation of a VHF marine radio. If you do not have a valid VHF certificate this course may be conducted on board the yacht or in the classroom prior to joining the practical course.

Minimum sea time must have been met prior to the final examination.

What does the exam consist of?

Written theory examinations will occur during the course. The final examination is an oral and practical test on board a yacht. Candidates must demonstrate that they have sufficient ability to handle, dock, and anchor the boat with a required level of confidence. Candidates can expect to be examined on any subject contained within the syllabus and to be questioned on any of their yachting experience to date.

In the event that the examiner considers an examinee not to have achieved the required standards, a certificate will not be issued. In this case, a confidential report will be sent to the candidate outlining the reason or reasons for failure and suggesting remedial action that could lead to the successful completion of the course. Completion of the IYT Worldwide Yachtmaster Offshore course is not a guarantee of passing the examination and receiving your certificate.

How do I apply for enrolment?

Candidates may apply to any of the participating IYT Worldwide Partner Schools worldwide who offer this course. In order to apply for the IYT Worldwide Yachtmaster certification courses, a detailed yachting resume must be sent to your IYT training school for evaluation.

Candidates may sit the shore-based course prior to having all the above requirements.

Verification of the above yachting experience must be original and signed by the skipper of the yacht in which the candidate was sailing. Candidates claiming sea time during times when they were acting as skipper may sign their own entries but independent verification may be required and checked by IYT Worldwide.

What is required for my final Yachtmaster examination?

All of the courses and criteria must be fulfilled before a candidate may apply to take the final on-board examination.

What does the final exam consist of?

The final exam will be conducted by an IYT Worldwide Yachtmaster examiner and takes the form of an extensive oral and practical test on a yacht (either power or sail). Candidates can expect to be examined on any subject covered by the syllabus of the shore based or practical courses and to be questioned on any aspect of their yachting experience to date.

In the event that the examiner considers an examinee not to have achieved the required standards and/or the candidates ability as Captain does not reach the required standard, and/or the prerequisites have not been met for the IYT WorldwideYachtmaster Offshore, a Yachtmaster Coastal certificate may be issued in the interim. In this case, and if requested, a personal report will be sent to the candidate outlining the reason or reasons for failure and suggesting remedial action prior to re sitting the exam.

Completion of the Yachtmaster Offshore certification course is not a guarantee of passing the examination and receiving your certificate.

As you advance and become more proficient as crew or skipper you take on bigger challenges that require proper training to ensure the safety of your family and friends. The bigger the boat or length of adventure the more training you require.

Most of us prefer to spend our time on the water and not in a classroom. To facilitate this, IYT has a series of E-learning courses available for the theoretical part of sail and powerboat training.

  • Take one of our online (Elearning) courses for your next level of training.
  • Plan your practical training at one of our many schools worldwide to earn your final qualification.
  • Book in advance with your school as class sizes and availability may be limited.
  • Review the IYT course progression details to learn about professional level courses.
  • Spend time on the water and properly log your seatime.

The Boating Lifestyle is one of the most rewarding pursuits available. There is something physically and emotionally invigorating when you are offshore. To enjoy the experience fully you need the proper training & skills to be safe, prepared and command a vessel.

An RYA Offshore certifies an individual as competent to captain a vessel up to 24m in length and no more than 200 Gross Tonnes. The offshore certification is applicable passages during which the yacht is no more than 150 miles from harbour.

The Yacht master offshore consists of two components:

Both components can be done on an individual basis but in order to achieve a commercial endorsement for the yachtmaster offshore certificate of competency, both the theory and practical examinations must be passed.

What is an RYA Yachtmaster?

The RYA Yachtmaster® Certificate of Competence is often the ultimate aim of aspiring skippers. It is a well known, highly respected qualification worldwide, proving your experience and competence as a skipper. Instead, provided you have sufficient experience, certification and seatime, you can put yourself forward for an exam to test your skills and knowledge. There are a number of RYA navigation courses that will help you prepare for your exam. Many RYA Yachtmaster candidates also choose to book themselves into an RYA training centre for some specialised exam preparation training, but this is not compulsory.

Scotland's 2030 emissions target unreachable, climate change experts say

Scotland's 2030 climate change target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions is now out of reach, independent experts have concluded.

A new report from the Climate Change Committee (CCC) has said the measures needed to achieve the target were now "beyond what is credible".

The CCC said in order for Scotland to achieve its goal of cutting harmful emissions by 75% by 2030, the rate of emission reduction in most sectors would need to increase by a factor of nine in the years up to the end of the decade.

In a damning report to the Scottish parliament, the CCC said: "The Scottish government is failing to achieve Scotland's ambitious climate goals."

Scotland has missed eight of the past 12 annual targets for cutting planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions.

The report also noted a rise in emissions in 2021, linked to colder-than-average weather that year and an increase in transport emissions post- COVID .

The CCC also highlighted that the publication of Scotland's new draft Climate Change Plan, due late in 2023, had been "delayed".

'Falling short'

As such, it said there was "no comprehensive delivery strategy for meeting future emissions targets".

Calling on ministers to publish this "urgently", the CCC insisted that "actions continue to fall far short of what is legally required".

The independent body, which advises governments across the UK on climate change , said that now the 2030 target was "not credible" the Scottish government should instead seek to "build on its high ambition and implement policies that enable the 75% emissions reduction target to be achieved at the earliest date possible".

It said: "By the end of this decade, Scotland will need to: treble the pace of rollout of public electric vehicle charge points, reduce car traffic by 20%, increase heat-pump installation rates by a factor of at least 13 and double onshore wind capacity.

"Woodland creation will need to more than double by the mid-2020s and peatland restoration rates need to increase significantly."

'No strategy'

The report also said there was "no strategy for decarbonising aviation in Scotland", with a plan "still needed" to meet the commitment for 30% of Scottish government-managed ferries to be low emission by 2032.

Turning to buildings, the CCC said that while approximately 6,000 domestic heat pumps were installed in Scotland in 2023, this "needs to increase to more than 80,000 per year by the end of the decade".

The peatland restoration target has been missed for the fifth consecutive year, and ministers were told "Scotland is significantly off track to meet its 2025 70% recycling-rate target, with no progress in rates over the last 10 years".

However, the report said there had been "some progress in delivering renewable electricity generation in Scotland". The CCC said that the Scottish government was on track to meet its targets for offshore wind capacity in 2030, but that it was "slightly off track" for the onshore wind target for this year.

Net Zero Secretary Mairi McAllan said: "The Climate Change Committee has always been clear that meeting the legislated 2030 target, agreed by parliament on a cross-party basis, will be extremely challenging, and may not be feasible.

"We remain fully committed to meeting our target of net-zero emissions by 2045, and in 2024-25 alone we are committing £4.7bn to support the delivery of our climate change goals.

"Scotland is already halfway to net zero and continues to decarbonise faster than the UK average."

Weak heat pump uptake harming efforts to cut emissions, government warned

Ms McAllan highlighted that in the last five years Scotland has created around 75% of all new woodlands throughout the UK.

She also noted more than a third of the population benefits from free bus travel and more than £65m has been invested to support the installation of around 2,700 public EV charge points.

The Scottish government also hopes to reduce car mileage by 20% by 2030 and decarbonise buildings through its proposed Heat in Buildings Bill.

Ms McAllan accepted that the "hardest part of this journey is ahead of us" and stated that the Scottish government expects a "real-terms cut" to its UK capital funding.

She added: "We have also faced opposition to modest measures in tackling the crisis, such as low emission zones, workplace parking and the deposit-return scheme, at a time when consensus is crucial to ensure that we have a sustainable planet.

"We will now carefully consider the report's recommendations and our next steps, including legislative options, before providing a formal response."

Cruising Instructor Course, Largs

This is the course for sailors who would like to pass on their sailing skills and experience on the water.  The title RYA Cruising Instructor will allow the successful candidate to teach up to Day Skipper level. The course is for experienced Yachtmaster Offshore candidates, with commercial endorsement, who on successful completion of the exam be able to instruct practical courses.

The course is taken over 5 days with a moderator joining at the end of the week.  It is a combination of assessing the candidate's knowledge, providing a structured framework to instruct, coach, observe and deliver constructive feedback, and ensure the structure and standards required of RYA courses are understood.

Prior to the course the candidate is required to have their RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence commercially endorsed.

  • Your Professional Practices and Responsibilities certificate (PPR this can be done online)
  • Your original, completed ML5 or ENG1 (for cat 1 or 0 waters) medical fitness form
  • A copy of your RYA Basic Sea Survival certificate or STCW Personal Survival Techniques
  • A copy of your RYA Marine Radio SRC Certificate or other acceptable GMDSS Marine Radio Operator's Certificate.

The course is for the experienced skipper with theoretical and practical knowledge well in excess of the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence.  Candidates are required to pass an online Pre-Course Knowledge Check prior to attending the Cruising Instructor course.  Access to the online check will be issued with the course Joining Instructions, which will be sent out 6 weeks before the course starts.

As with all our courses, onboard food, fuel and marina fees are included in the cost.

The course starts on a Monday morning (0900 hrs) and departs from Largs Yacht Haven, Scotland.  Candidates are invited to arrive on Sunday evening and familiarize themselves with the yacht

We will start our cruise in the beautiful tourist port town of Cascais on the outskirts of Lisbon. We will visit Porto, we will stop at the marina right at the mouth of the Douro River, not far from the famous Port wine cellars, which we will visit. We end up in the Spanish port city of La Coruña, home to the world’s oldest lighthouse still in operation. Port & Paella, sun and sailing – a winning combination!

Discovery adventure sail full of interesting, exotic places. It’s not often that you visit four countries on two continents on one holiday! The sailing adventure is planned in such a way that there is time to wander the streets of the towns and cities visited. Each place is completely different, with a different atmosphere and a different culture. Sailing in the Gibraltar area is a powerful experience in itself due to the current, weather and heavy boat traffic – great for revising your col regs! Malaga is easily accessible by plane, as is Lisbon for all major airports.

Three days of ocean crossing to the island of eternal spring. We will sail from Arrecife, stopping at the beautiful and rustic Isla Graciosa, north of Lanzarote followed by Islas Selvagenas which is a Portuguese nature reserve comprising of several small islands about 130 miles northwest of Lanzarote. The next stop will be Porto Santo, a small neighbour of Madeira with a beautiful, almost empty golden beach of several miles. Once on Madeira we will visit some of the marinas in the south of the island and end up in Funchal, the capital of Madeira. The entire trip should be less than 400 miles. Informal coaching on the way, keeping your skills fresh in the winter months.

Jersey – Dublin – Largs

A brisk, action-packed cruise across the English Channel and the Irish Sea.

The area of Brittany and the Channel Islands has one of the largest tidal ranges in Europe, with very strong tidal currents. Yachting paradise and hell at the same time. Amazing sailing experience and good experience.

Who hasn’t sailed the Biscay, it’s as if he wasn’t even a yachtsman. The Bay of Biscay is called the weather kitchen for Europe. The weather here changes quite quickly and with stronger winds, bigger waves can form. That’s why we count on a 10-day cruise so that we can wait for the optimal moment to set sail. The cruise itself should take about 3 days. If there is time left, we will take some cruises along the coast of Brittany around Brest. Both La Coruña and Brest are harbor pearls of the Atlantic Ocean.
