The Navigator is a great knockabout small boat. Fun to row and sail, it makes an excellent ship-to-shore yacht tender. It’s also light enough for cartop transport—handy for boating on inland lakes and the inner harbor. 

The Navigator is an excellent boat for general recreational use, as a yacht tender or personal watercraft. It rows very well, has good stability and buoyancy, and sails very responsively.

We personally use this boat for everything. We will carry it on the roof rack for a quick run to our favorite secret crabbing area, we tow it behind a “big” sailboat, and it’s the boat we grab for just “dinking around” the harbor on a Sunday afternoon.

The high performance option consists of easily removable bowsprit with 120% genoa jib and related hardware. It is a fast, fun little dinghy.

Practical Sailor Tests Lightweight 10-foot Rigid Inflatable Boats

Ab, achilles, caribe, and zodiac stand out in a field of fixed-transom ribs..

After reviewing one of Walker Bays 270 Genesis FTD rigid inflatable boat (RIBs) in the December 2007 issue, Practical Sailor tracked down 11 similar boats from seven manufacturers-ranging in manufacturers suggested retail price (MSRP) from $1,800 to $3,500 and weighing from 92 to 154 pounds.

All of the dinghies are about 10 feet long, with beams of about 5 feet. Most have V-shaped fiberglass hulls and are rated for 15-horsepower engines. Nine of them are rated to carry up to four people.

Eight have fixed transoms; the others have transoms that fold-down for storage. In most of the fixed-transom boats, the transoms and decks are one piece, giving them stiffness and strength to hold a 100-pound, four-stroke outboard. The transoms also provide sturdy attachment points for eyebolts for lifting and lowering the boats on davits. The downside is that these boats cannot be stowed as easily as their counterparts. The rigid transom adds weight, too: The fixed-transom models average about 132 pounds. With the exception of one boat, the folding-transom models come in at roughly 93 pounds.

Because the folding-transom types are clearly different products, the field was divided into two groups. This first article will compare the eight RIBs with fixed transoms, and a follow-up will examine RIBs that, like the Walker Bay Genesis line, have folding transoms.

What We Tested

The eight test boats with rigid transoms include two Achilles, the HB310 and the HB315-LX, and two from Groupe Zodiac (makers of the Zodiac and Avon lines), the Zodiac Yachtline 310 and the Avon Rover 315. Rounding out the field are the 10VL from AB, the Caribe L10, the Mercury Dynamic 310, and the Brig Falcon Tender F300.

Tube choices split into two composite fabric types: Duponts Hypalon, an elastomer valued for its proven resistance to abrasion and ultraviolet rays; and PVC, which is lighter, comes in more colors, and can be welded at the seams, instead of glued. The two Achilles, the Avon, the AB, and the Caribe are available only in Hypalon, while the Zodiac comes only in PVC. The Mercury and the Brig are manufactured in both Hypalon and PVC. Practical Sailor recommends Hypalon for tropical or year-round sailing.

The Hypalon models from Avon, AB, Brig, and Mercury are backed by 10-year warranties. The two Hypalon models from Achilles and the Caribe carry only five-year warranties, as does the PVC Zodiac.

Manufacturer warranties are tied to the warranties of the fabrics used to make the boats.

“From what I have seen, most of the manufacturers of the fabric offer a 10-year warranty on their fabric,” explained Stephan Lance, vice president of Defender Industries, a major seller of small boats and engines. “A boat manufacturer will elect to pass on that warranty or will reduce their exposure and offer only a five-year warranty on the fabric after production.”

The eight test boats range in weight from about 112 pounds (the Mercury) to 154 pounds (the Avon).

As for horsepower, makers of the Achilles HB315-LX and the AB 10VL recommend 15 horsepower and say their boats can handle a fifth person. The AB 10VL is the longest at 10 feet, 6 inches, and the pup of the group, the Brig F300, is 9 feet, 10 inches. (Brig suggested its larger F330 would have been more appropriate for this field.)

The AB, Achilles HB315-LX, and Caribe all carry beams of 5 feet, 5 inches. In the all-important category of interior space, these three boats also have the most real estate.

Tube diameter is often promoted as an advantage in choppy water, when the larger tubes are supposed to offer a drier ride. However, a greater tube diameter does not necessarily mean youll stay dry, as other factors also come into play, such as hull design, tube placement on the hull, and the type of rubbing strake. Five of the eight have tube diameters of 17 inches. The Zodiac has 18-inch tubes. The Brig and Mercury have tube diameters of 16 inches.

On the chart on pages 8-9, youll note the variation in maximum loads. They differ because manufacturers may be calculating the weight according to different standards, Lance said. “Few of the inflatable boat makers follow the same formula,” he said. “Some use ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council) standards, some go by the ISO (International Standards Organization)-and there are a couple different ISO standards that apply.”

What We Found

Although the smaller boats were slightly wetter in chop, there were no clear standouts in terms of “dry” boats. The transoms flexed very little on the water. Most of the boats are manufactured with fiberglass knees molded into the deck structure to support the transom, and most have a pair of towing eyes glued to the bow for bridle towing.

Only two of the tested boats, the Zodiac and the Avon, have bow lockers, which add a significant amount of weight.

The bench seat on most of the test boats must be installed with the boat slightly deflated. Decks are foam-filled with plugs in the stern for drainage. Most have a recessed bilge area, and two boats have storage compartments. The Avon and Zodiac featured rotomolded anchor locker inserts. Some of the tested boats come in upgraded versions with bow lockers.

Although a tow test was not possible, testers noted that all but the AB, the Caribe, and the Mercury had attachment points for the towing bridle, which our previous tests have shown improve tracking. Some dealers install these bridle rings as an option. A safety line to the center eye is always recommended.

The AB 10VL is the largest boat we tested. It can handle the most horsepower and is rated to carry five people. Former Practical Sailor editor Nick Nicholson carried an AB around the world with him. Nick said that over the years, some stainless-steel hardware rusted sooner than expected and some of the external glue patches failed, but concluded: “It delivered everything that was asked of it.”

Two large straps on the aft sections of the tubes and one at the bow are used for carrying this boat. The manufacturer also includes eight Hypalon straps on the tube tops for handholds. The lifting rings are mounted on the inboard side of the transom and the foredeck (almost under the inflated tube).

The drain plug has no tether, and the drain is a modest, 7/8-inch in diameter. The deck, which mostly follows the shape of hull, lacks nonskid. The oars can be well secured inside the boat with Velcro straps.

The beefy, single-rail rub strake extends around the tube stern ends, which are unprotected on some other boats.

The AB topped out at 21 miles per hour and stepped onto plane in 7 seconds. Low-speed handling in forward was fine, and it was good in reverse. Testers noted that the boat tended to porpoise at cruising speeds, but eventually settled in and cornered well at slightly higher speeds. A spokesperson for AB said the company was baffled by Practical Sailors observations at cruising speed, and responded that it could be attributed to the boats deeper V-hull and larger tubes deflecting the water.

Bottom Line: This is a roomy boat that is priced competitively. It is relatively light, performs well, and is backed by a 10-year warranty with good dealer support in the Caribbean. It has already proven to be a reliable, durable tender, even in tropical climates.

Achilles HB310

At 126 pounds, the HB310 is one of the lighter RIBs tested. The carrying handles are large and well-placed for three-person transportation-two at the stern and one at the bow. Two people, one positioned on each side, can also easily carry the boat using one of the aft handles and one of the forward padded straps. The plastic handhold for the driver is well placed, on the inboard side of the starboard tube, just forward of the drivers seat. Each oar is fixed to T-bracket that rotates down for storage, but does not allow the oars to slide in or out. Rubber clips hold the paddle end of the oar.

The lifting rings are mounted to the inboard side of the transom and in the foredeck. Along the centerline, the deck is flat, but it follows the hulls deadrise as it extends outboard, making for less level standing area in the bow than some of the other test boats. There is a tie down for the gas tank.

The HB310 has a wooden bench seat amidships. The drain plug is inserted from the outside and is attached to a lanyard. The drain hole is larger than those on most other boats-1 inches in diameter.

The beefy, two-rail rub strake should endure countless connections with docks, boats, and other hard objects. The boat has no storage compartments but has excellent handholds.

On the water, the HB310 hit 21 miles per hour at wide-open throttle, tying the AB 10VL for top-speed honors. The HB310 would not plane unless the two testers put their weight forward, then it did so in 5 seconds.

Testers found the Achilles harder riding than others in the field. It slid slightly during high-speed turns, and in general, it bounced around more. High- and low-speed maneuvering was excellent.

Testers like the cupped blades and the sturdy mounting system for the oars, but the hinge-type oarlocks make rowing tougher.

Bottom Line: The Achilles HB310 has only a five-year warranty, and other boats offer smoother rides, but the boat is well-built and street prices are very competitive, making it a good buy for bargain-hunters.

Achilles HB315-LX

The Achilles HB315-LX is clearly wider at the bow than its smaller brother, the 310, increasing interior volume. Its springier shear suggests a drier ride, and our testing bore this out. The HB310s tube end caps are pointed as well, compared to the HB315-LXs rounded ones.

This model has padded Hypalon straps at the bow and stern quarters for carrying. Six more straps dot the top of the tubes, providing handholds while underway. Although our test boat had different oars, the new HB315-LX has the same oars as the HB310.

The deck is flat and covered with nonskid along the centerline. It offers no storage but does have two lifting rings on the inboard side of transom and one on deck at the bow. (A heavier bow-locker version, the HB315-DX, is also available.) The boat comes with two eyes for a towing bridle and a third eye at the bow to attach an anchor rode. The drainage system is the same as the HB310s. The rub one-channel rub strake is adequate.

The HB315-LX was the most maneuverable in reverse of any boat tested. This RIB was plenty fast, with a top speed of 20 mph. It hopped up on plane in 7 seconds. The lip on the transom plate made it hard to remove the engine.

The boat delivered a smooth, bone-dry ride. Practical Sailor was pleased with the boats outboard-powered performance.

Bottom Line: The Achilles HB315-LX rides smoothly and handles well at all speeds. It is our Best Choice in this category, although wed like to see it backed by a 10-year warranty.

Avon Rover 315

Featuring newly redesigned tubes, the Rover 315 was the heaviest boat we tested. Both it and the Zodiac are built using a closed-mold injection, foam filled, fiberglass construction, which ensures more consistent fiberglass-to-resin ratios and total weight. For its length, its narrower than the other boats, with a beam of only 5 feet, 1 inch. (Only the Zodiac is more narrow.)

Testers liked the pivoting, hard-plastic carrying handle on the bow, but they found the aft handles-Hypalon straps mounted on top of the tubes-less comfortable to grip than those on other boats. Hypalon straps also hold the oars on the tube tops. The handle ends of the oars are held by tying elastic hooks around them. The oars can also be stowed inside the boat, alongside the tube.

Nonskid covers the flat deck. The bow locker is a rotomolded polyethylene insert. This raised anchor/storage locker also doubles as a seat. Theres also a wooden bench seat forward of the oarlock holders. The drain plug is inserted into a 3/4-inch diameter drain hole inside the boat. The plug is tethered to the transom plate to keep it from being lost.

With three people, carrying the Avon was no problem. Two people lift the stern using the handles on the top of the tubes, and a third hoists the bow with the plastic handle.

Four stainless-steel lifting rings are fitted in the deck, making it easy to attach the boat to stern-mounted davits from inside the boat.

In our performance tests, the Mercury 9.9-horsepower outboard pushed the boat out of the hole and onto plane in 8 seconds. Top speed was 19 miles per hour. Handling at low speed was excellent, especially in reverse. At cruising speed, the boat cornered with minimal stern sliding. The handhold for the driver is, in our opinion, too far aft to be useful. Ride quality was good but a little bouncy, our testers reported. Testers also found the boat more difficult to row than others.

Bottom Line: The redesigned Avon Rover 315 was the most expensive boat tested, but it scored only average in many evaluation points. It continues the models workhorse tradition, but its heavy weight is a drawback for a boat-stored tender. On the plus side are a bow locker, a wide service network and a transferable 10-year warranty.

Brig Falcon Tender F300

The Brig Falcon-with a 9-foot, 10-inch length and 16-inch tubes-was one of the smaller boats in our test group. (The company also makes a larger F330, which is just shy of 11 feet.) Despite its small size, the Hypalon F300 is relatively heavy. Brig attributes the extra weight to the boats twin-shell hull construction and reinforced transom.

The three carrying handles on the Brig have sharp edges and were uncomfortable to our testers hands, although the rub rail itself can be used to lift the boat. There are no handholds on the tubes, but there are two grablines, one on each tube.

Nonskid covers the Brigs flat deck. A lifting ring is mounted to the foredeck and a second set of rings is bolted through the transom.

Our test boat came with two wooden bench seats, which testers noted were “wobbly” in their plastic holders on the tubes. The oars fit securely in their rubber seats for tube-top stowage. The oars are fixed in oarlocks that don’t allow them to be feathered or moved in or out. The large drain plug is inserted from the outboard side of the transom but it has no lanyard. On the bright side, the drain hole is a full 2 inches in diameter, allowing for quick drainage. The rub strake needs some fattening up, in our view.

On the water, the boat would only plane when the passenger leaned forward. Then, the Brig stepped on plane in 5 seconds. The boat steered nicely in reverse.

At a slow speed in forward, some water spilled over the top of the transom when turning to starboard. The boat cornered well in high-speed turns, and the ride quality was average but a little bumpy, testers noted. It had an average rowing performance, but hit 20 miles per hour at full throttle.

The builder backs its Hypalon boats with a 10-year warranty and offers six years of coverage for the PVC version.

Bottom Line: The Brig has a competitive price and strong warranty going for it, but it fell short of others on several evaluation points.

The 127-pound Caribe L10 has three unpadded carrying straps-two at the stern on top of the tubes and one at the bow below the rub strake. Two lifting rings are bolted to the inboard side of the transom. The third ring, bolted to the foredeck, is far enough forward that you wont catch your feet on it.

The aluminum oars are longer than those on most other test boats. The oarlocks and straps on the aft ends of the tubes hold the oars on top of the tubes. Velcro straps on the tubes, near the deck, hold the telescoping oars inside.

The oars also can be stowed in a pouch under the fiberglass helm seat. (Most of the other boats have wooden seats.)

A pair of rubber pads glued to the aft portion of the tubes provide grippy areas for the driver to sit. This helps keeps the driver in place, even if hes in a wet bathing suit. The pads also act as chafe guards, protecting the tubes from riders clambering on and off the boat.

Caribe provides three handholds on the top of each tube, beginning inboard of the

oarlocks and moving forward. Like the carrying straps, they are not padded and are a bit hard on the hands. The deck has no nonskid. Our test boat had just one towing eye, no towing bridles. The drain plug is inserted from inside the boat, but there was no lanyard with our test boat.

At 17 miles per hour, the Caribe was the slowest in the group. The boat handled nicely at low speeds and in reverse, however. The Caribe also performed well once it got up on plane, turning without sliding. The large oar blades and round-eye oarlocks made it one of the better rowers.

Bottom Line: The Caribe is one of the more expensive boats in our group and offers only a five-year warranty, but it offers a good combination of interior volume, smooth ride and light weight.

Mercury Dynamic 310

At just 112 pounds, the Mercury is the lightest Hypalon boat tested. It lacks the interior room of many of the other boats, with an inside length of only 6 feet, 4 inches.

The carrying handles on the Mercury dwarf those on the other boats-and theyre made of softer, easier-on-the-hands rubber. Instead of mounting handholds on the tubes, Mercury rims the entire boat with grab lines. This puts handholds within easy reach, but the lines are not as easy to hold on to as straps.

Mercury offers four lifting rings to work with-two on the inboard side of the transom and two on the foredeck (out of the way).

The Mercury also has a large drain hole-1-inch diameter. The oars can be securely fastened to the top of the tubes, but wed prefer a storage option inside the tubes. The paddle ends are securely fastened down with bungee cords. The Mercury lacks towing eyes, and the thin rub strake could use some more meat, in our opinion.

On the water, the Mercury hit a top speed of 19 miles per hour and planed in 10 seconds. The testers had to lean forward to get the boat to plane. In reverse, the port tube became submerged, and the boat took on water where the transom meets the tube. The boat slid slightly in high-speed cornering, but the ride was relatively soft. Testers had no problem rowing the boat.

Bottom Line: Testers liked many of the deck features-the carrying handles and oversized drain plug-but performance was lackluster. This is the least expensive Hypalon boat in the field.

Zodiac YL310

The only boat with 18-inch tubes, this new Zodiac is the narrowest boat in our group and the lightest. Practical Sailor thought the handholds were positioned in all the right locations for easy two- or three-person carrying. The handholds can be moved fore and aft along a nylon strap.

The flat deck has a grippy, raised-diamond nonskid. The padded bench seat can be moved aft or amidships.

The oars clip into a plastic block that pivots down for storage. Another set of slide-on clips are meant to keep the oar ends in place near the stern. These need to be installed correctly or the oars will come loose underway. An illustration in the

0 )]manual indicates correct installation.

The Zodiac has four lifting rings, all on deck, making them easier to secure to a davit. The rotomolded anchor locker was nicely tooled. Testers liked the rub strake. The inside drain plug has a lanyard.

The Zodiac shined in performance testing. The boat cornered with precision, generated no spray, and delivered a very smooth ride compared to the other boats. Its fast, too, topping out at 20 mph. The Zodiacs trim angle was noticeably more sensitive to weight placement compared to some of the other boats its size others in the test. Time to plane was 7 seconds.

Bottom Line: The Zodiac hits the mark in several areas, including ride quality, handholds, storage, and deck traction. The fuel-tank tie down is a nice touch. While Practical Sailor is not a fan of PVC in the tropics, this boat is a top contender if youre intent on having a bow locker and live in temperate climates.

Conclusions

Differences between these boats were often subtle, but ultimately four boats stood out above the rest: Zodiac Yachtline 310, AB 10VL, the Caribe L10, and the Achilles 315-LX. Though relatively heavy, the Zodiac Yachtline 310 stood out for its performance, features, and finish. If you live in a temperate climate where the PVC hull will see reduced sun exposure and like the idea of a bow locker, this Zodiac will serve you well. In our view, those in tropical climates should narrow their selection to the Hypalon boats. The AB 10VL and Caribe L10 both do a good job of combining light weight, plenty of volume, and a dry ride. Testers gave the Caribe a slight edge over the AB, but the AB is bigger and faster. Except for a 10-year warranty, the Achilles HB315-LX has all the features testers desire in tender. As a bonus, the boat is priced very competitively. It is a clear Practial Sailor Best Choice in this category.

After testing eight of these lightweight RIBs, some common deficiencies became apparent.

Oars-While these boats are not meant to be rowed, manufacturers should pay more attention to their oars and oar stowage. Ideally, there should be a method of securing the oars inboard, where they are almost impossible to lose.

Rub strakes-Theres no reason to outfit these boats with thin rub strakes. A couple of the boats had very anemic protection.

Fuel-tank tie downs-Although easy to retrofit, fuel tank tie-downs are also a plus. Only four of our test boats offer tie-downs-the Zodiac, Avon, and both Achilles RIBs.

Performance-Consumers should remember that these boats are extremely weight sensitive. Use caution, especially at high speeds.

Weight-Our test boats are classified as “lightweight RIBs,” but most fail to live up to that moniker. The average weight of the test boats: 132 pounds, a lot to drag around. Our upcoming review of folding-transom RIBS features lighter boats.

Stowage-These boats occupy significant real estate on deck, so they often wind up hanging from davits at the stern of the boat. Placing significant weight, windage, and a potential wave catcher at the stern of a boat can have serious consequences in heavy weather. Practical Sailor does not recommend stowing a dinghy on davits for ocean passages. Unless Youve got a very big boat, with very big locker, they should be lashed on deck to padeyes installed to withstand significant loads.

Speed-Finally, if you want to plane on the bigger boats with three or more people, opt for a 15-horsepower engine. Be aware, however, that a small RIB with a big engine is a potentially dangerous combination, particularly with just one person on board. The thrill of a 20-knot ride can be-literally-paralyzing.

1993 Hunter Passage 42 - PROTEUS Set up for serious off-shore passage making and fully self-sufficient off-the-grid cruising. Has recently (beginning 2014) sailed in England, the coast of Europe and the western Med (2015) and crossed the Atlantic to the Caribbean (Nov 2015). Came up through the Caribbean (spring 2016). This yacht was never chartered, always privately owned, and meticulously cared for. All servicing and installations were done to a high standard. All safety equipment is up-to-date. The yacht participated in the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) which requires a high standard of safety equipment, training, and inspections. The yacht has been certified as a Class-A offshore sailing yacht. All documentation is available and will be conveyed to future owner. The previous owners lived aboard, loved every minute of it, but are now moving back on land for a few years and do not want the boat to sit and atrophy. She needs to go to a good home and to someone who will continue the journey! She has taken care of her owners for years and will continue to do so for many years to come. S/V PROTEUS is "overbuilt" and designed for extended offshore passage-making and off-the-grid cruising. Just want to jump all the way down to the USVI instead of going the super-slow way all the way through the Bahamas? Okay. The previous owners just made a passage from the Dominican Republic straight to Ft.Lauderdale (March 2016). Seven days offshore? No problem. PROTEUS has a thicker hull, reinforced rigging, extra backstay (B&R rigs normally don't have them). Massive solar panels, watermaker, genset, wind generator – all these advanced features make for a yacht that can go anywhere, do anything, and actually be comfortable while doing it. The solar panels were upgraded in 2015, and the owners report that they lived entirely off the solar panels and almost never used the generator while underway. Occasionally, you'll hear people scoff at production yachts for being only for "coastal" cruising. "Oh, I'd never cross an ocean in that!" Not the Passage 42! Did I mention she's cruised in the North Sea and English Channel recently? When there were only aluminum-hull Ovni's and other "extreme" sailboats and expedition yachts at the docks, PROTEUS was right in there with the best of them. How to Build a Boat: PM Constructs a 10-Foot Dinghy (With Plans)

A few months ago, home editor Roy Berendsohn tried his hand boat-building, making a 10-foot dinghy using old Popular Mechanics plans from 1937, hand tools and a cramped garage.

It was a long time since anyone in my family had built a boat. The last was my Uncle Paul. He was a shipbuilder who learned his trade beginning at age 14 in Hamburg, Germany. Every morning, the boy rowed from the family's dock out across the shipping lanes of the Elbe River, which flows into the North Sea. The trip to the shipyard where he was apprenticed took an hour and a half, longer in winter, when there was fog and floating ice on the water. After three years, Paul received a journeyman's certificate and a berth aboard a gigantic four-masted windjammer named Passat--"trade wind" in English. That was in the 1920s, be-fore the fascists confiscated his family's own small shipyard and the Berendsohns left for America.

A few months ago, I decided to try my hand at the ancestral trade. I've built everything from houses to a blacksmith's forge (March 2009), but there's no more evocative project than a boat, at least to me. Since before Austronesians first gazed across the Pacific, wooden vessels have stood for craftsmanship and the drive to explore. I sifted through PM's archives looking for a classic design and eventually settled on a 10-foot dinghy from our May 1937 issue. It looked elegant, yet simple enough to build on a pair of sawhorses.

It's been many years since my Uncle Paul was around to lend advice, so I ran the drawings past Timo White, a boatbuilder at Tuckerton Seaport, a small maritime museum on the New Jersey coast. It turned out that Timo was in the midst of restoring a surfboard built from plans in the July 1937 issue of PM. (It was a big year for seafaring projects, I guess.) He confirmed that the dinghy was a good candidate for a first-time builder and agreed to lend a hand if needed.

Shipyard in the Driveway

On a wintry early spring morning I set out for Willard Brothers Woodcutters, a sawmill and lumber dealer in Trenton, N.J. You can spend hours there, roaming stacks of delicious-looking walnut, cherry and oak, some of the boards as wide as your arm is long. I bought red oak for the Sea Scout's frames (that was the name of the craft in the plans, and I chose to keep it) and a 2-inch-thick slab of white oak for the wedge-shaped stem at the bow.

Back home, I started making a racket feeding planks through a table saw. My skills were creaky--I've spent too much time in recent years fixing stuff and not enough building--but over a few days my old confidence returned. The Sea Scout began to take form.

Most boats begin with the frames, the ribs that provide structure to the hull. I roughed them into shape, along with the stem and the gracefully shaped stern wall, or transom, which I cut from ¾-inch plywood. Then I braced it all to a building board--which is nothing more than a 2 x 10 with a chalk line marked down the center. The boat's skeleton was in place, but each member still needed to be precisely beveled before I could secure the curved planks of the hull. The next step was to clamp thin strips of wood, called battens, to the frame to stand in for the planks, so I could measure and mark all those angles. Then, I took the parts off the board and finished shaping them.

Often, the weather confined me to the garage, but when the sun emerged I worked in the driveway. If you want to get to know the neighbors, start building a boat. Linda from next door asked whether the craft would be sailed, rowed or powered by an outboard motor. Others wondered where I would go with it, how I'd get it there and what I would name it. A truck driver from Tulnoy Lumber, dropping off some marine plywood, approached respectfully. "This is beautiful," he said, with an old-fashioned New York accent as broad as the hand he ran over the frames.

Anatomy of a Boat

1. Building Board: Like most small wooden boats, the Sea Scout was built bottom side up. Most pieces aren't permanently connected until relatively late in the process, but every element of the frame had to be shaped to fit together precisely. The 12-foot-long building board, made from a 2 x 10, held the parts in the right positions while the bevels were measured and again when it was time to join the frames together with the chine logs and planking.

2. Bottom Member: The frames underlying the dinghy's hull were fashioned from red oak. The curved section is the bottom member--each one was cut with a jigsaw and smoothed using a block plane.

3. Side Member: The gently tapered oak side members meet the bottom members at a slight angle. These pieces are cut oversize, then shortened to finished length.

4. Gusset: The gussets joining the bottom and side framing members are cut from oak and fastened with epoxy and bronze screws, some of which ended up being too close to the gusset's edge.

5. Cross-Spall: Cross-spalls support each frame during the building process. They're screwed to the side members and the building board. After the planking is done, the boat is turned upright and the supports are removed.

Working the Plank

I don't know how Uncle Paul felt about it, but boatbuilding can be acutely frustrating. The bane of my weekends proved to be a small bronze screw. A No. 6 Frearson flat-head, to be exact. Like most modern DIYers, I'd been spoiled by drywall screws and other aggressive fasteners that practically plow into the lumber. Even using a specialized, tapered drill bit and a waxlike lubricant with the unlikely name of Akempucky, I managed to wreck screws by the dozen. The head on one would strip a moment before the screw was fully seated, while another would shear off on the last eighth of a turn, leaving me with a shiny Frearson-head penny.

Timo had tried to downplay the arcana I'd face--"It's more like house carpentry than fine-furniture building," he had said--but I still found myself floundering on occasion. One challenge was that the 1937 article was more an overview than a detailed set of plans. And, though it pains me to find fault with my forebears at Popular Mechanics, the sketch contained suspicious discrepancies. Timo helped me recalibrate some of the dimensions midway through the project--and I had to trim several pieces after they were assembled.

The biggest hurdle came when it was time to plank the hull. The classic way is to bend strips of solid wood to the frames. I'd chosen marine-grade fir plywood instead to save time, but now I was barely able to force the hull's 14-inch sheets into place. There was no way the half-inch plywood I'd planned for the bottom was going to work.

Timo advised me to switch to a special, wafer-thin marine-grade plywood and plank the bottom in two layers. He came swooping in one Thursday morning to show me the technique. He stepped out of his truck with a broad smile, and a block plane in each hand, and my mood lifted. He politely took a sighting down the chine logs where we'd attach the bottom, and spent a few minutes planing them to the last measure of precision. Then we got to work with staples, glue and screws--and in a couple of hours the project went from a plywood flower bed to a small craft with sensuous compound curves.

It was satisfying, but my mistakes still showed in details like the placement of screws and the shape of the stem. "You know what they say," Timo told me. "Putty and paint makes a boat what it ain't." I got out my paintbrushes.

1. Very few elements in a boat are simply cut to shape and installed. Like the oak stem shown here, nearly every piece needs to be beveled or curved to fit the surface it meets. (That tool is a fore plane I own, built by Stanley Tools in 1927.)

2. Ancient terms persist in boatbuilding. This curving wood piece, where the bottom is attached, is called a chine log. In past centuries, it consisted of a single log chosen for its natural curve, then shaped to fit. The chine log is set in a notch and fastened to each frame.

3. Two layers of okoume plywood form the bottom of the Sea Scout. Timo (foreground) showed me how to install them.

Maiden Voyage

We launched the boat at Tuckerton Seaport on a cool, overcast day that felt more like September than June. Down at the dock, Timo produced a can of Amstel Light in lieu of champagne. "Go ahead," he said, "pour it over the bow." I popped it open and emptied the beer over the paint. "I christen thee Sea Scout," I said. Then we slid the little craft off the dock and into the water.

You might think a feeling of triumph came over me. Not so. The Sea Scout looked very small, almost helpless, as she sat bobbing at the end of the painter, the little rope that Timo had threaded across the bow. I felt humbled. A phrase from the Book of Psalms flashed in my mind: "They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business on great waters."

I wasn't aiming for any great waters myself. I eased off the dock and into the boat. Timo handed me the oars. Awkwardly, I drew the handles back, just above my hips. The craft slid forward gracefully, almost like she was on ice. As Timo watched, I braced the left oar down in the water and swept the surface with the right. The Sea Scout pivoted neatly, unexpectedly elegant and spry.

If the oars were a kick, you can imagine the thrill I felt when I mounted the 2.5-hp Mercury Marine outboard on the transom. It's a clean-running four-stroke engine, compact yet almost zippy on a boat this small. I gave the engine full throttle and cut some nice straight lines and a pleasingly tight curve complete with a crisp little wake.

With the afternoon gone, my first voyage was complete. In the end, I decided to donate the boat and engine to Tuckerton Seaport. Frankly, I needed the space in my garage and driveway: The Sea Scout was a good first foray into wooden boatbuilding, but I knew I could do better--and I'm already sifting through plans.

OUR ADVANCED TOOLKIT

Azimut’s pioneering use of carbon fiber lamination goes beyond pure performance. The Carbon Tech Generation offers expanded volumes onboard, while maintaining excellent dynamic stability and perfect handling. Preserving the yacht’s low center of gravity, the carbon fiber was focused on the upper parts of the yacht, lightening the laminated components by up to 30% and reducing the natural roll momentum up to 15%.

The bridge was produced in partnership with Simrad-Naviop and has a single ultra-wide screen displaying all the main monitoring and navigation information, a mix of video sources and clusters of content chosen using the commanders, or two touch screens duplicated by two physical joggers for extra redundancy and safety.

Automatic interceptors by Humphree gives the vessel the lift it needs to get up on plane faster or to reach that optimum running trim. In this way the resistance of the hull is automatically optimised for every speed and load condition, this resulting in increased speed and lower fuel consumption. The Humphree system is all electric powered by 12-24 Volt DC. Thanks to the design of the Interceptor it only requires a small amount of power to move the blade up and down, even under high speed operation.

At the helm, the innovative Optimus Electronic Power Steering system by Seastar Solutions gives you a similar sensation to driving a top of the range car. The owner can configure the responsiveness of the helm by regulating wheel turns and steering effort according to speed. The system also has the additional benefit of eliminating the hydraulic piping between the helm station and the rudder compartment.

The engine room features an Active Ventilation System that regulates fan rotation speed on the basis of temperature.

For many yacht owners, the solution to finding more space aboard for friends and family is summed up by that immortal line by Chief Brody in Jaws : “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Until now, bigger has typically meant longer. But that’s quickly changing as more and more builders are creating interior volume by going wider and taller. For disrupter builder Wally Yachts and its polarizing new Wallywhy 150—which refers to its internal volume rather than the boat’s length—the quirky design is said to deliver 50 percent more space than more traditional 78-footers.

Other builders like Princess have been in the game since 2021. Its X95 first appeared several years ago, effectively throwing down the gauntlet as a way forward for sub-100-foot yachts to supersize both interior and exterior volumes.

Since then, many other builders of small superyachts have jumped on board, with designs that typically have somewhat bloated profiles, far-forward main suites, and open transoms—features all designed to maximize space but minimize length.

Here are 10 new yachts 100 feet and under that are breaking the mold in an attempt to dominate the nautical space race.

It’s no wonder that disrupter Italian builder Wally—now part of the Ferretti Group—calls its latest head-turner a “spaceship.” Claiming up to 50 percent more space than comparable 78-footers, the 150 (named after interior volume rather than length) has standout features like a main salon with over eight feet of headroom, and a beam of more than 22 feet. The pragmatic design includes a one-level main deck attached to an open rear cockpit that offers easy access to the water. Its most noteworthy feature is the rule-breaking, full-beam master suite tucked into the bow on the main deck. It has wraparound glass—stretching all the way around the bow—for panorama-like views from the main bedroom. Priced from about $6.7 million.

Lazzara UHV 87

Short for Ultra High Volume, this new Turkish-built pocket superyacht is a sistership to Lazzara’s UHV 100 and 125 models. The newest Lazzara boasts an impressive 2,153 square feet of interior space in its 87-foot length. Arguably, the boat is not pretty in a classic sense. The towering hull sides, blunt, plumb bow, and dark-tinted glass make it look more like a dinner cruiser than a mini-superyacht. But the interior space is astonishing, from the cavernous Sky Lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, to the salon with a separate, chandelier-lit dining area and chef’s galley. With a fuel capacity of 3,000 gals, the twin 1,000 hp Volvo D13s deliver a top speed of 16 knots. The boat also has transatlantic range. Base price starts at about $10.9 million.

Sunseeker 100 Yacht

Movie nights under the stars should have a whole new appeal aboard UK builder Sunseeker’s brand-new 98-footer. Lie back on the yacht’s extra-wide foredeck sunpad and watch the latest blockbuster on a 140-inch screen with laser projection. Or, if you’re the lucky owner, stargaze from your private terrace tucked away in the bow, just steps from the full-beam main-deck master suite, with atrium-style glass sliding doors. One of the best innovations here is the wide, uninterrupted walkway around the entire top deck, which provides safe, easy access from the flybridge to the forward entertaining space. With its twin 2,600 hp V16 MTU diesels, top speed is an impressive 29 knots. Priced from about $10.5 million.

Azimut Grande 26M

For its brand-new Grande 26M compact superyacht, Italian builder Azimut has gone extra wide to create massive interior and exterior spaces. Spatial highlights include a full-width flybridge that’s almost 20 feet across and close to 40 feet long, and a foredeck entertaining area that seems more like an outdoor patio. The Alberto Mancini-styled go-fast cruiser is crammed with space-enhancing innovations, such as a teak-decked garage door that, at the touch of a button, hinges upwards to extend the rear cockpit by almost five feet. New ZF pod drives coupled to the yacht’s twin 1,650 hp MAN V12 diesels also save space. It is priced from about $6.2 million.

Princess X95

As we said during our 2021 tour of Britain’s Princess Yachts’ tri-deck X95 “When it comes to the polarizing, head-spinning design, there are no half-measures, no in-betweens. You either love it. Or loathe it.” But what those eye-popping lines hide is perhaps the most spacious 95-foot luxury cruiser in the category. Reckoned to be some 40 percent roomier than cruisers with the same length, the X95 has stretch-out accommodations for up to 10 in five cabins and living spaces that rival most apartments. The flybridge covers almost the entire length of the yacht. The 100 is also fast, with twin 1,990 hp MAN V12s delivering a top speed of 23 knots. Prices start at about $12 million.

Extra X96 Triplex

This broad-beamed 96-footer is from the Italian builder Extra Yachts, which is part of the Palumbo Superyachts Group. While it’s called the Triplex, there are actually four levels if you include the cozy upper sundeck with its outdoor kitchen, dining area, and oversized sunpads. The exterior comes courtesy of Italian designer Francesco Guida, while interiors are by Milan-based Hot Labs. Both teams have made the most of the yacht’s class-leading 25-foot beam. Notable features include a vast full-beam master on the main level and an upper salon dedicated entirely to dining, with a table for 10, an open chef’s galley, and an adjoining outdoor bar. Twin Volvo IPS1350s deliver a 16.5-knot top speed. Priced from $12 million.

Sunreef 100

This Sunreef power catamaran’s beam spans a staggering 44 feet, offering the kind of interior and exterior spaces you only get with superyachts twice the length. Every element of the yacht is XXL-size—from the massive hydraulic swim platform to the full-width flybridge that covers almost 1,000 square feet. Down in the salon is a huge 11-seat U-shaped bar that would delight any mixologist. The five staterooms in the twin hulls have space for 10. A pair of 1,300 hp MAN V8 diesels delivers a six-knot top speed. It is priced from about $15.3 million.

Absolute Navetta 75

In Italian, the word “navetta” translates to “little ship.” Which is a perfect description for Absolute’s new 75-foot fast cruiser. It’s an evolution of the strong-selling Navetta 73 but with nearly two feet of extra length. The yacht’s expansive interior volumes will remain the same, with features like a forward master stateroom on its own level that has a private entrance steps away from the main salon. The salon features floor-to-ceiling glass, with full views of the water, courtesy of open bulwarks. Twin 1,000 hp Volvo IPS1350 diesels deliver a top speed of 25 knots. Pricing starts at about $4 million.

Arcadia A96

Cross a spacious Miami high-rise penthouse with a Canyon Ranch spa and the result could be this new 96-foot superyacht from Italian builder Arcadia. Boasting a remarkable 4,300 square feet of total living space, there’s room for 12 guests and five crew. And the living spaces even expand, courtesy of fold-down terraces in the main salon and on the rear deck. But the yacht’s focus on wellness and healthy living sets it apart. That expansive, teak-decked foredeck, spanning over 500 square feet, is perfect for yoga sessions or meditation, while the cockpit and beach club offer another 1,000 square feet of social space. For extra peace and quiet at anchor, solar panels can provide up to nine hours of generator-free power.

Numarine 26XP Fast

Think of it as offering pace, with space. Turkish yard Numarine has been building its bold 85-foot 26XP explorer style mini-superyacht since 2018, but later this year, it will launch the U.S.-focused 26XP Fast. Instead of slow-churning 435 hp diesels and nine-knot cruising, it’s bolting-in a pair of mighty 1,800 hp MAN V12s and modifying the hull to deliver a top speed of 31 knots. What hasn’t changed is the XP’s cavernous interior and expensive deck space. Take the top-deck flybridge which, thanks to the yacht’s 21-foot beam and far-forward helm, spans over 700 square feet. That space will include a dining table for eight, a full outdoor kitchen, and more lounges than a Saint-Tropez beach bar. Prices start from $6.95 million.

Crew member on DALI said everyone on board was safe hours after bridge collapse, official says

A crew member on the DALI cargo ship sent a message hours after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed Tuesday saying everybody on board was safe, according to Apostleship of the Sea director Andy Middleton.

Middleton, who spent time with the captain of the DALI Monday, told CNN’s Laura Coates he reached out to a crew member after hearing about the incident Tuesday morning. 

He said there were 22 members aboard the ship from India who were setting sail earlier Tuesday morning and were heading toward Sri Lanka.

“I was able to reach out to a crew member very early this morning around 5:30 (a.m. ET) or 6 (a.m. ET) and get a message to them asking if they were OK,” he said. “That crew member responded within just a few minutes advising that the crew was safe, and everybody that [was] on board was safe.”

Middleton was told by the ship's captain Monday that the vessel was going to take a longer route to avoid risks along the Yemen coast.

“When I was out with the captain yesterday, we were talking while we were driving, and he advised that they were sailing down and around the tip of South Africa in order to avoid the incidents that are going on off the Yemen coast, and it was a safer way to go,” he said.

Middleton said the  Apostleship of the Sea  is a ministry to seafarers with members that spend time in the port and on the vessels as a friendly face to the seafarers that visit the Port of Baltimore, “taking care of their needs to make sure that they're reminded of their God-given human dignity when they're here in Baltimore.”

Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning. The collapse came after a 984-foot cargo ship hit the bridge's pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told reporters Tuesday evening it's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day."

Late Tuesday, it was discovered that two of the construction workers who went missing after the bridge collapsed were from Guatemala , the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said late Tuesday.

Here's what you should know to get up to speed:

• The victims: Eight people were on the bridge  when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and was later  discharged , fire official and the medical center said.
• The incident: Video shows the moment the entire bridge structure falls into the water, as the ship hits one of the bridge's pillars. CNN analysis shows that the  ships lights flickered  and it veered off course before it hit the bridge. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the crew on the ship were able to issue a "mayday" before colliding into the bridge, which allowed the authorities to stop incoming traffic from going onto the bridge.
• Response efforts: Earlier, dive teams from various state and local agencies were brought in to assist in search-and-rescue operations, according to Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr.. The mission started with 50 personnel and continued to grow before the Coast Guard announced Tuesday evening that it was suspending its active search-and-rescue operation and transitioning to a "different phase."
• The investigation: Authorities are still working to establish exactly how the crash occurred. The National Transportation Safety Board will look into  how the bridge was built  and investigate the structure itself. It will "take time to dig through" whether the bridge had ever been  flagged for any safety deficiencies , NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said.
• Rebuilding the bridge: US Sen. Chris Van Hollen said the path to rebuilding the bridge will be "long and expensive." Senior White House adviser Tom Perez told reporters Tuesday “it’s too early” to tell how long it will take to rebuild the bridge. President Joe Biden said Tuesday he wants the federal government to bear the full cost of rebuilding the collapsed bridge, noting that it will not wait for the company who owns the container ship DALI to shoulder the costs. Funding could come from the Federal Highway Administration as well as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, but it may require additional funding from Congress.

2 of the missing construction workers from bridge collapse were from Guatemala, foreign ministry says

Two of the construction workers missing from the bridge collapse in Baltimore were from Guatemala, the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement late Tuesday.

Those missing included a 26-year-old originally from San Luis, Petén. The other is a 35-year-old from Camotán, Chiquimula, the statement said.

The ministry said both were part of a work team “repairing the asphalt on the bridge at the time of the accident.”

The statement did not name the two people missing, but it said the country’s consul general in Maryland “went to the area where the families of those affected are located,” where he hopes to be able to meet with the brothers of both missing people.

The consulate   also issued a statement Tuesday saying its consul general in Maryland "remains in contact with local authorities," and also confirmed that two of those missing "were of Guatemalan origin.”

Underwater mapping of bridge collapse area to begin Wednesday, Baltimore fire chief says

Search operations near the Key Bridge collapse have shut down for the night due to dangerous conditions, but the process of underwater mapping with many local, state and federal dive teams will begin Wednesday, Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace told CNN’s Anderson Cooper Tuesday night.

Wallace said the portion of the Patapsco River is “tidal influenced, so it goes through tide cycles just like the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay does.”

The water depths in the area under the bridge vary from 40 feet to more than 60 feet, Wallace said. The deeper the divers go, the colder the temperatures they encounter, and the visibility is zero, he added.

 Wallace said when crews arrived Tuesday morning, the surface water temperatures of the Patapsco River were about 47 degrees with an air temperature of 44-45 degrees.

Here's what you should know about the historic Francis Scott Key Bridge

The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday after a massive container ship lost power and crashed into the iconic Baltimore bridge, sending people and vehicles into the frigid Patapsco River.

Six people, believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead and the Coast Guard has ended its active search and rescue mission.

Here's what you should know about the historic bridge:

• How old?: The Francis Scott Key Bridge, also referred to as just the Key Bridge, opened to traffic in March 1977 and is the final link in the Baltimore Beltway, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA.) It crosses over the 50-foot-deep Patapsco River, where former US attorney Francis Scott Key found inspiration to write the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner, the MDTA says.
• How long?: The bridge was 1.6 miles long when standing, MDTA reports.
• Traffic volume: More than 30,000 people commuted daily on the bridge, according to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.
• How much did it cost?: The bridge cost $60.3 million to build, MDTA says. Since its collapse, President Joe Biden said he’s committed to helping rebuild the bridge as soon as possible.
• About the port: Baltimore ranks as the ninth biggest US port for international cargo. It handled a record 52.3 million tons, valued at $80.8 billion, in 2023. According to the Maryland state government, the port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in related services.
• About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. Dali is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The ship is about 984 feet long , according to MarineTraffic data. That’s the length of almost three football fields.

Baltimore woman says bridge collapse was "like a piece of family dissolved"

For longtime Baltimore resident, Ceely, who opted not to share her last name, seeing footage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse  Tuesday was deeply personal.

“I was very heavy-hearted,” Ceely told CNN. “Very tearful, thinking about the families whose loved ones may be in the water and just remembering when the bridge was constructed, and it was just like a piece of family dissolved.”

Ceely was at a prayer group Tuesday morning when she saw the news. She recalled being afraid when she first crossed the bridge while in Ford Maverick in 1975, but grew to like it because it saved time on the road.

“It was a main artery just like a blood line. It was a main artery to the other side of town. It was awesome. It beat going through the city all the time,” she said.

Elder Rashad A. Singletary , a senior pastor who led Tuesday night’s vigil at Mt. Olive Baptist Church told CNN that many church members watched the bridge's construction.

"It’s a part of the community. A lot of our individuals in our congregation drive that bridge to go to work, and so now it’s really a life changing moment,” he said.

More than 18 hours after the collapse of the Baltimore bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said it was a heartbreaking conclusion after the Coast Guard ended the search-and-rescue operation for the six people who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

It's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day," he said.

"We put every single asset possible — air, land and sea" to find the missing people, he told reporters on Tuesday evening. "While even though we're moving on now to a recovery mission, we're still fully committed to making sure that we're going to use every single asset to now bring a sense of closure to the families," the governor added.

6 people presumed dead after Baltimore bridge collapse, Coast Guard says. Here's what we know

As the sun sets in Baltimore, six people are presumed dead after a major bridge collapsed overnight Tuesday, according to the Coast Guard. The Francis Scott Key Bridge came down around 1:30 a.m. ET after a cargo ship collided with it.

The Coast Guard said it has ended its active search-and-rescue operation for the missing construction workers who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

• What we know: Eight people were on the bridge when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and has been discharged . The Coast Guard has been searching for six other people. But, around 7:30 p.m. ET, the Coast Guard said it has transitioned to a “different phase” of operation, now it did “not believe we are going to find any of these individuals alive,” Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said.
• About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. The vessel is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The US Embassy in Singapore has been in contact with the country’s Maritime and Port Authority, a State Department spokesperson said.
• The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the collapse. A team of 24 experts will dig into nautical operations, vessel operations, safety history records, owners, operators, company policy and any safety management systems or programs, said NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy. A voyage data recorder will be critical to the investigation, she added. 
• Vehicles on the bridge: Officials are also working to verify the numbers of how many cars and people were on the bridge, Homendy said. Gov. Wes Moore said the quick work of authorities in closing the bridge had saved lives . Radio traffic captured how authorities stopped traffic and worked to clear the bridge seconds before the impact . Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr. said there is a “ distinct possibility ” more vehicles were on the bridge, but authorities have not found any evidence to support that.

53-foot boat breaks loose, slams into gilchrist bridge in punta gorda.

Owner Tim Torrento says he got the call around 10 a.m. that his boat broke off the anchor because of the winds.

A 53-foot boat broke loose Wednesday morning and slammed into the Gilchrist bridge in Punta Gorda.

“It wasn’t that far from the bridge. I should’ve moved it yesterday; I suspected today was going to be a bad weather day,” Torrento said.

He wasn’t on the boat when it moved. However, he did spend all day trying to move it away from the bridge. It took Sea Tow coming out to help before the boat was towed away from the area.

FDOT reports engineers did verify the integrity of the bridge to ensure it’s safe for travel. Torrento believes all the damage was to his boat rather than any concrete.

”They do make these bridges pretty good,” he said. Torrento’s name may sound familiar. We interviewed him for a similar scene in December.

At that time, his anchor dragged through the sand and the boat was lodged behind Hurricane Charley’s.

Six presumed dead after cargo ship crash levels Baltimore bridge

BALTIMORE — A major Baltimore bridge collapsed like a house of cards early Tuesday after it was struck by a container ship, sending six people to their deaths in the dark waters below, and closing one of the country’s busiest ports.

By nightfall, the desperate search for six people who were working on the bridge and vanished when it fell apart had become a grim search for bodies.

“We do not believe that we’re going to find any of these individuals still alive,” Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon N. Gilreath said.

Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Brawner Builders, said earlier that one of his workers had survived. He did not release their names.

Up until then, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore had held out hope that the missing people might be found even as law enforcement warned that the frigid water and the fact that there had been no sign of them since 1:30 a.m. when the ship struck Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Moore expressed heartbreak after officials suspended the search for survivors.

"Our heart goes out to the families," he said. "I can’t imagine how painful today has been for these families, how painful these hours have been have been for these families."

It was a crushing blow to the loved ones of the missing men, who had waited for hours at a Royal Farms convenience store near the entrance of the bridge for word of their fate.

The tragic chain of events began early Tuesday when the cargo ship Dali notified authorities that it had lost power and issued a mayday moments before the 984-foot vessel slammed into a bridge support at a speed of 8 knots, which is about 9 mph.

Moore declared a state of emergency while rescue crews using sonar detected at least five vehicles in the frigid 50-foot-deep water: three passenger cars, a cement truck and another vehicle of some kind. Authorities do not believe anyone was inside the vehicles.

Investigators quickly concluded that it was an accident and not an act of terrorism.

Ship was involved in another collision

Earlier, two people were rescued from the water, Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said. One was in good condition and refused treatment, he said. The other was seriously injured and was being treated in a trauma center.

Moore said other drivers might have been in the water had it not been for those who, upon hearing the mayday, blocked off the bridge and kept other vehicles from crossing.

“These people are heroes,” Moore said. “They saved lives.”

Nearly eight years ago, the Dali was involved in an accident. In July 2016, it struck a quay at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium, damaging the quay.

The nautical commission investigated the accident, but the details of the inquiry were not immediately clear Tuesday.

The Dali is operated and managed by Synergy Group. In a statement, the company said that two port pilots were at the helm during Tuesday's crash and that all 22 crew members onboard were accounted for.

The Dali was chartered by the Danish shipping giant Maersk, which said it would have no choice but to send its ships to other nearby ports with the Port of Baltimore closed.

The bridge, which is about a mile and a half long and carries Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River southeast of Baltimore, was "fully up to code," Moore said.

National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said that her agency will lead the investigation and that a data recorder on the ship could provide more information.

"But right now we're focusing on the people, on the families," she said. "The rest can wait."

President Joe Biden vowed to rebuild the bridge and send federal funds.

"This is going to take some time," the president warned. "The people of Baltimore can count on us though to stick with them, at every step of the way, till the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt."

Speaking in Baltimore, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg echoed the president's promise.

"This is no ordinary bridge," he said. "This is one of the cathedrals of American infrastructure."

But Buttigieg warned that replacing the bridge and reopening the port will take time and money and that it could affect supply chains.

The Port of Baltimore, the 11th largest in the U.S., is the busiest port for car imports and exports, handling more than 750,000 vehicles in 2023 alone, according to data from the Maryland Port Administration.

Writer David Simon, a champion of Baltimore who set his TV crime drama "The Wire" on the streets of the city he once covered as a reporter, warned online that the people who will suffer the most are those whose livelihoods depend on the port.

"Thinking first of the people on the bridge," Simon posted on X . "But the mind wanders to a port city strangling. All the people who rely on ships in and out."

Timeline of crash

Dramatic video captured the moment at 1:28 a.m. Tuesday when the Dali struck a support and sent the bridge tumbling into the water. A livestream showed cars and trucks on the bridge just before the strike. The ship did not sink, and its lights remained on.

Investigators said in a timeline that the Dali's lights suddenly shut off four minutes earlier before they came back on and that then, at 1:25 a.m. dark black smoke began billowing from the ship's chimney.

A minute later, at 1:26 a.m., the ship appeared to turn. And in the minutes before it slammed into the support, the lights flickered again.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said the workers on the bridge were repairing concrete ducts when the ship crashed into the structure.

At least seven workers were pouring concrete to fix potholes on the roadway on the bridge directly above where the ship hit, said James Krutzfeldt, a foreman.

Earlier, the Coast Guard said it had received a report that a “motor vessel made impact with the bridge” and confirmed it was the Dali, a containership sailing under a Singaporean flag that was heading for Sri Lanka.

Bobby Haines, who lives in Dundalk in Baltimore County, said he felt the impact of the bridge collapse from his house nearby.

"I woke up at 1:30 this morning and my house shook, and I was freaking out," he said. "I thought it was an earthquake, and to find out it was a bridge is really, really scary."

Families of bridge workers wait for updates

Earlier in the day, relatives of the construction crew waited for updates on their loved ones.

Marian Del Carmen Castellon told Telemundo her husband, Miguel Luna, 49, was working on the bridge.

“They only tell us that we have to wait and that they can’t give us information,” she said.

Castellon said she was "devastated, devastated because our heart is broken, because we don’t know how they have been rescued yet. We are just waiting for the news."

Luna's co-worker Jesús Campos said he felt crushed, too.

“It hurts my heart to see what is happening. We are human beings, and they are my folks,” he said.

Campos told The Baltimore Banner that the missing men are from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.

Active search and rescue ends

The Coast Guard said it was suspending the active search-and-rescue effort at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"Coast Guard’s not going away, none of our partners are going away, but we’re just going to transition into a different phase," Gilreath said at a news conference.

Maryland State Police Superintendent Roland L. Butler, Jr., said it was moving to a recovery operation. Changing conditions have made it dangerous for divers, he said. 

Butler pledged to "do our very best to recover those six missing people," but the conditions are difficult.

"If we look at how challenging it is at a simple motor vehicle crash to extract an individual, I'm sure we can all imagine how much harder it is to do it in inclement weather, when it's cold, under the water, with very limited to no visibility," he said.

"There's a tremendous amount of debris in the water," which can include sharp metal and other hazards, and that could take time, Butler said.

'A long road in front of us'

Built in 1977 and referred to locally as the Key Bridge, the structure was later named after the author of the American national anthem.

The bridge is more than 8,500 feet long, or 1.6 miles. Its main section spans 1,200 feet, and it was one of the longest continuous truss bridges in the world upon its completion, according to the National Steel Bridge Alliance .

About 31,000 vehicles a day use the bridge, which equals 11.3 million vehicles per year, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

The river and the Port of Baltimore are both key to the shipping industry on the East Coast, generating more than $3.3 billion a year and directly employing more than 15,000 people.

Asked what people in Baltimore can expect going forward, the state's transportation secretary said it is too early to tell.

"Obviously we reached out to a number of engineering companies, so obviously we have a long road in front of us," Wiedefeld said.
