Tiara Yachts announces fishing module and optional equipment packages available on outboard models in its LS and LE series.
As with so many classes in this year’s Boat of the Year competition, the judges faced a real quandary in determining Best Full-Size Cruiser Under 48 Feet. All three nominees — the Beneteau 46.1, Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 490 and Hylas 48 — came in within 2 feet in length of one another. The Beneteau and Jeanneau were incredibly similar, with identical price tags ($520,000) and almost exact displacements (hovering around 24,000 pounds). By comparison, the Hylas was considerably heavier (34,000 pounds) and more expensive ($830,000).
“The Beneteau 46.1 and the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 490 are straight-up production boats,” said Tim Murphy. “This Beneteau is very much in keeping with what we expect from that builder; it’s a fine boat. But that Jeanneau is an exemplary expression of what high-production yards are capable of, and we ultimately recognized it as such.”
Murphy also summarized where the Hylas 48 stood in the marketplace. “It’s more of a boutique boat. It won’t be produced in the same quantity as the others. And it’s directly aimed more toward the actual bluewater sailor.”
And as an example of a long-range voyaging vessel, for Murphy and his colleagues, they basically found it irresistible.
“You can feel that extra displacement in the motion of the boat,” Murphy said. “It felt very stiff in a good way. There was a lot of traffic on Chesapeake Bay during our sea trials, but there was a very comforting motion as the boat punched through the wakes. It felt like kind of an old-school cruising boat. And the center cockpit is very nicely set up with winches right next to the helm to each side. You could easily go sailing by yourself on this very substantial yacht without any problem. Impressive.”
“This is a sort of retro design, like a lot of Hylases I’ve looked at over the years, and that’s not a negative comment,” said Ed Sherman. “I’ve always been amazed how well the Queen Long boatyard does. This was built by a very experienced Taiwanese workforce, and they’re artisans. They take what they do very seriously, and they do a very good job. They put metal plates in the laminate as backing for winches, and they’re using stainless steel, not aluminum. I’m feeling really good about that.
“The service access is also great,” he continued. “They have hatches and doors that open up and give you beautiful access to all the key service points you’ll need to get to. And it was terrific sailing it. It’s very traditional. Yes, the center cockpit is a little hard to get in and out of, but once you’re situated, it’s very comfortable. I could see spending a whole lot of hours in this cockpit. All the sailhandling controls are right by the helm. The electric winches make furling and setting sails very easy, even the screacher. This would make a wonderful boat for an experienced couple.”
“The stainless work is just incredible,” said Alvah Simon. “It’s thick, it’s heavy, it’s gusseted. The pushpit, the pulpit, the stanchions, the lifelines — there’s just no give. They’re excellent. There are just so many things that reflect quality and attention to detail. Yes, it’s more expensive than the other boats in this class. But there’s real value there too. It’s solidly put together. It’s a very elegant-looking boat. For a couple who want and can afford this style of bluewater cruiser, it’s a sweet ride.”
There wasn’t much more to say. Quite simply, the Hylas 48 is 2019’s Best Full-Size Cruiser Under 48 Feet.

The aft cockpit can fit a table and two folding chairs together with a large transverse bench seat that seamlessly continues the indoor/outdoor living space. Intelligent design features such as the foot pedal operated sliding flybridge stairs, starboard sidedeck acrylic “wind stopper” door and overhead handrail further enhance the functionality and comfort found in this area. The transom double gate opens onto a large swim platform with an optional hydraulic lifting system able to carry a 770 Ibs tender or water toy.
Simple well-designed features such as the bathing ladder with swimming pool handrails ensure there is no easier way to enjoy the delights of the sea. On the foredeck there is the option of a sunpad with lift up sections creating forward seating – perfect for relaxing with a drink and a good book. Note the asymmetrical deck layout allows for a wide and well-protected starboard sidedeck with high bulwarks giving safe and easy access to this area.
The generous 20m² flybridge has plenty of space for a comfortable layout so you can enjoy the panorama of the sea every minute of the day. The backrests on either side of the pilot seat provide ample forward facing seating while making passage. Additionally, the transverse vis-à-vis seating and table area create a great area to eat & relax. This can be further complimented by the optional flybridge T-top with an inset sliding soft-top. Aft, there is a transverse wet bar facing forward, which allows the person cooking or serving drinks to socialize with others relaxing on board. The aft flybridge space allows for sun loungers, paddleboards, or other small water accessories.
The main salon – space to relax & entertain.
Entering through the patio doors there is a large L-shaped galley on portside aft with a full height 67-gallon fridge and freezer and large overhead lockers outboard. The standard galley has a gas oven or optional multi-function electric oven, a clever “magic corner” pull-out stowage unit, and cupboards & drawers that ensure plentiful capacity for extended cruising while still allowing space for an optional dishwasher.
The raised edge Corian countertop features a gas or induction cooktop and large sink. Opposite of the galley is a spacious sideboard with cupboards and an interior bottle rack.
The sideboard can be configured with an icemaker, Villeroy & Boch dishware stowage and an illuminated glassware cupboard above. Forward of the galley is a large raised u-shaped dinette providing plentiful seating for up to eight with great views all around and in social proximity to the helm. The aft end of the seat has space for a 23 bottle wine chiller. On the portside dash top, below the window there is a large stowage unit that can house a 40” TV if desired.
The helm station with adjacent side door leading to the starboard midship cleat & bulwark gate allows for easy docking and circulation. The helm has space provisioned for 2 x 12” Raymarine MFD screens and the Beneteau Ship Control system. In addition, an aft docking camera, stern docking lights and the optional Cummins integrated joystick system can be specified for a stress free docking experience. The helm dash top, console and adjustable pilot seat are finished in dark grey creating a clean area for safe passagemaking in all light conditions and complimenting the excellent helm visibility.
In the lower accommodation, entering into the forward master cabin reveals a comfortable double berth with room on both sides of the bed for movement. With headroom of 6’6” and a bed length of 6’6” there is plenty of room for larger occupants. There are overhead lockers & wardrobes, large hull windows with inset portlights & an overhead hatch which floods the cabin with natural light and cross ventilation.
The en-suite bathroom includes a separate shower compartment with a teak slatted seat. The port guest cabin benefits from a large hull window with inset portlight, stowage, wardrobe and two single berths with an infill to convert to a double berth. Note this cabin also features an en-suite door to the portside day head – in which you will also find a separate shower compartment with teak slatted seat. The starboard guest cabin features two portlights, a transverse double berth and a double door wardrobe that is large enough to place an optional washer/dryer in the base.
Personalization of your Swift Trawler 48 is possible with numerous interior and exterior variations. The standard interior wood is in finished in our Alpi Teak stain with an optional Oak finish for a lighter atmosphere. Additional upgrades to the interior finishes are available for the sideboard doors, and owner & port cabin wardrobe doors with wood or crème slatted doors with inset panels. Further interior personalization is possible with a selection of fabric choices for the wheelhouse u-shaped seating near the helm. Exterior fabrics are available in our standard Marlin white marine vinyl or upgraded Dolce 51.
The Swift Trawler 48 is provisioned to sleep 6 passengers, with three cabins in the lower accommodation and additional capacity with an easy-to-convert salon dinette with wrap around privacy curtains as standard equipment.

MICAD naval architects have designed a semi-planing hull that optimises fuel efficiency across the speed range. With 510 US gallons of fuel on board you can expect a range of +600nm at 9 knots displacement speed or 280nm at 18 knots efficient planing speed whilst retaining a fuel reserve of 10%. This in combination with 169 US gallons of fresh water allows for considerable autonomy away from the dock. While Swift Trawler DNA is focused on comfortable & economic cruising - the standard pair of Cummins QSB 6.7 litre 380hp engines allows a top speed of 21 knots with the upgrade 425hp engines giving a top speed of 25 knots. So there is always plentiful “reserve power” available to take the boat beyond 20 knots should the need arise. *Zero sea state, 50% load case, clean hull & drivetrain.
To enjoy the sea with confidence the Swift Trawler 48 is rated for 12 passengers in CE Category B. The hull has been designed to optimize sea-friendly behavior and performance. The slender flared bow of the Swift Trawler 48 cuts through many different sea conditions wonderfully all while retaining efficient, safe and predicable handling.

The sirena 48 has all the features of its longer sisterships, but in a more compact package. wanted: owner-operators looking to cruise long distances., howard walker, howard walker's most recent stories.
“Honey, I shrunk the boat,” might just be the perfect catchphrase for the brand-new Sirena 48. The latest and smallest model in the Sirena line will debut later this year.
From the drawing board of Argentinian naval architect Germán Frers, the 48 features an all-new semi-displacement hull capable of delivering a lively 26-knot top speed.
Frers, who is credited with the design of Sirena’s other offerings (Sirena 58, 68, 78 and 88), incorporated many of the bigger models’ styling cues, like the striking, near-vertical bow, upright, wrap-around windows and sun-pad-rich flybridge and forward deck. The idea was to incorporate most of the features of the larger yachts into a smaller footprint that didn’t compromise on quality of life.
One big surprise-and-delight design feature is the aft cockpit. According to Constantinou, buyers will have the choice of three distinctly different layouts. The more conventional version will have an open cockpit with a large, rear-facing L-shaped dining area and glass panel for views aft.
A more versatile alternative incorporates a rear, forward-facing sofa in the cockpit with a self-contained crew or kids’ cabin beneath it. It offers a single berth with a separate head.
A third option would be for this space to be configured as a toy garage with a large, hydraulic lift-up door opening on to the swim platform.
“It would be spacious enough to store dive tanks, Seabobs or stand-up paddleboards, as well as lines and fenders. It’s all about offering choices and flexibility,” adds Constantinou.
Up in the salon, those extra-large vertical windows are designed to flood the cabin with light. Forward is a U-shaped dining area. The well-equipped galley afthas easy access to the back deck and its al-fresco dining.
While there’s an interior helm station, Constantinou says extra attention was put into the flybridge design and layout as more owners are expected to helm the yacht themselves from “up top.”
The family-friendly design kicks off with a flight of wide, deep steps, rather than a ladder, providing safer, easier access to the flybridge. And up there, sun-worshippers will find a huge, full-width sunpad ahead of the helm station. For entertaining, the rear of the flybridge features a large, wrap-around sofa with seats for eight, and a wetbar with sink close by.
Standard power for this new Sirena 48 is a pair of 480hp Cummins QSB 6.7-liter turbo diesels, though for captains in a hurry, there are optional Volvo D8s packing 550hp each. These will punch the 24-ton Sirena to a 26-knot top speed with a 23-knot friendly cruise.
Constantinou says the new Sirena 48 will make its global debut at this year’s Cannes boat show in September.

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN A BRAND NEW CONCEPT OF SEA LIVING
The cockpit is the open heart of the sport weekender, expanded onto a fold-down platform just over the waves on the port side with a retractable ladder.
POWER, DESIGN AND COMFORT
The modern, stylish helm station is based on a Plug&Play layout concept featuring clean, stark lines and a high-tech approach that uses led lighting to stunning effect.
YOUR COZY RESIDENCE ON THE SEA
Natural light enters from above and through the side windows of the second cabin to create a pleasant, inviting space. Located towards the stern, it is fitted with twin beds and a separate shower stall.
The high-performance patented Stepped ‘V’ Ventilated Tunnel (SVVT) was developed by Michael Peters and incorporates a classic deep ‘V’ hull with two transverse steps and a central tunnel aft. It is this latter feature that sets it apart from other current stepped deep ‘V’s, with its shallow aft central tunnel increasing the longitudinal stability of the boat in high speed turns and adverse situations. The use of the SVVT hull on the Verve 47 represents the merging of cutting-edge hull forms with advanced outboard engine power and avant-garde concept design and styling. The combination of technologies culminates in a boat that boasts unmatchable performance, manoeuvrability and speed in its class and represents the largest and grandest SVVT pleasure boat available on the market.
Azimut’s pioneering use of carbon fiber lamination goes beyond pure performance. The Carbon Tech Generation offers expanded volumes on board, while maintaining excellent dynamic stability and perfect handling. Preserving the yacht’s low center of gravity, the carbon fiber was focused on the upper parts of the yacht, lightening the laminated components by up to 30% and reducing the natural roll momentum up to 15%.
The custom-installed Raymarine electronics have been integrated to control and monitor every onboard system: from engines and alarms, to bilge and water discharge pumps, tank levels and engine room ventilation, right through to the sound system and the air conditioning units. The system can be accessed onboard from the helm station and, with the mobile app, remotely from a tablet or smartphone.

Easy to handle whether a beginner or expert
The Outremer 45 is a 48 ft catamaran. Easy to control from the helm station, everything is within reach and the clear view over the four corners of the boat guarantees perfect maneuvers, even single-handed.
With its narrow hulls and light weight, the feeling of gliding, well wedged in a comfortable seat with tiller in hand, is exhilarating.
But don’t worry if you leave the helm to the autopilot or if the wind gets stronger: the Outremer 45 is the most forgiving of catamarans. Peace of mind while cruising is non-negotiable on an Outremer, including on this single-handed catamaran.
All maneuvers are accessible from the helm station, located at the center of the boat. With a perfect view of the four corners of the catamaran and the sails, single-handed maneuvering is child’s play! After hoisting the mainsail on your own, using the electric winch in front of you, trimming and fine-tuning your sails with the mainsail and solent sheets, take the tiller, comfortably installed in the ergonomic seat, to enjoy unique steering pleasure. Returning to port, the engine controls and windlass are also within easy reach, guaranteeing seemless maneuvering.
The 360° view from the saloon and cockpit of this blue water catamaran provides exceptional visibility of the water and the surrounding environment, contributing greatly to onboard comfort. Aboard the Outremer 45, whether sitting or standing, inside or outside, the vision is perfect. A crucial factor for serene cruising! No need to climb on deck to scan the horizon, night watches will never have seemed as comfortable as at the chart table!
The very low boom allows easy access to the mainsail, lowers the sail’s center of effort and optimizes performance and comfort at sea. Access to the coachroof is made simple with just one step near the mast, and even the youngest can take part in maneuvers under the watchful eye of the skipper. When it’s time to reef or stow the sail, no acrobatics are required, and you stay safe. All these well-thought elements make the Outremer 45 the ideal catamaran for either beginners or a single-person crew.

The global authority in superyachting
The Daychaser 48 is a dayboater’s boat, with loads of space, thoughtful features and timeless aesthetics, as Kevin Koenig discovers...
The Barton & Gray Daychaser 48 is a boat that shouldn’t exist. And that’s not meant as a slight, it’s just a stated fact, according to Barton & Gray co-founder Doug Gray, who helped dream up the project.
“We tried so, so hard not to build this boat,” he says with a chuckle. “We went to a bunch of different boatbuilders and said, ‘We want to buy 15 multi-million-dollar boats from you, and send them to the most important ports in the world and fill them with the most influential people in the world,’ and no one — not one of them — bought in. The yachting industry is really lagging behind the private-jet industry when it comes to accepting these share programs. So we had to build a boat ourselves, and that’s the Daychaser 48.”
Gray is, of course, referring to his fleet of Barton & Gray boats that make the world’s most elegant boat-share company, with vessels in 36 ports in America and the Caribbean, with plans to expand to Europe in the not-too-distant future. The Barton & Gray fleet was heretofore largely made up of Hinckleys, but Gray and his partner, Tim Barton, thought they could improve upon some of their features for their specific purposes.
“Basically everything forward of the head was unusable. We don’t need a cabin; we do cocktail cruising mainly too, so a galley-down made no sense. Nobody wants to draw straws to go down below and make drinks. So a bow-lounge design started to become very appealing to us,” Gray says.
As part of his ongoing search for the right boat, Gray reached out to Zurn Yacht Design . “At first they wanted me to help them find something that already existed that fit their envelope, but there wasn’t anything out there,” Doug Zurn says, “so we crunched the numbers and realised they could do a custom job, and I got to work.”
What Zurn came up with is rather timeless, I think. I’ve been aboard the Daychaser twice and got an eyeful of her jetting VIPs up and down the Intracoastal at the 2023 Fort Lauderdale show, and her design has really grown on me. With a dark hull and loads of faux teak, at first I understood her to be a Downeaster, an idea bolstered by her having been built at Boston Boatworks.
But she isn’t quite that. A reverse sheer line and a plumb bow, not to mention that bow lounge, make her something all her own, and it’s a versatile aesthetic that looks just as at home plying the waters of Palm Beach as it would in Monaco’s Port Hercule.
Everything on board this boat is designed for dayboating, which suits not only Barton & Gray clients but also any private owner who wanted to shuttle a crowd from, say, Sag Harbor to their favourite waterside eatery in Montauk. It has not failed to attract attention beyond the membership base.
Worth Avenue represents the boat for retail sales. “The boat has had considerable interest from owners/captains of large motor yachts and multiple boat programs as a chase boat/tender,” broker William Baldwin says.
It’s a flexible platform. Gray jokes that the Daychaser has the same layout as a pontoon boat, but there is a kernel of truth in all good humour. Aft of the forward bulkhead, the Daychaser has a highly customisable, flat 4-metre-by-12-metre main deck. Sapele furniture done by Release Marine is the order of the day.
That oh-so-necessary bar is to port opposite a small dining table, while the cockpit is lined with upholstered bench seating and weighted throw pillows that won’t blow overboard. An oversized swim platform with two beefy gates to port and starboard is highlighted by an almost comically large pop-up shower to port — it looks like it should be on a Feadship.
The Daychaser also has integrated steps for boarding. “We’ve found that the most dangerous part of boating is getting on and off the boat — a broken finger, a twisted ankle, it happens all the time,” Gray says. “So we wanted these super sturdy and large steps to make getting on and off our boats as seamless as possible, regardless of your sea legs.”
There is easy-to-use stowage nearly everywhere as well. “Our boats might make 10 or 12 stops a day so our captains need to be able to get to lines and fenders easily,” Gray says. “That’s one thing Doug Zurn doesn’t get enough credit for. People talk about the aesthetics and seakeeping on his boats, they don’t talk about his wizardry for arranging a boat in a usable way.”
Captains will appreciate the engine room, reached through an oversized hatch that provides good access to the twin 550- horsepower Cummins QSB6.7s and the Racor fuel-water filters. A white gelcoat sole makes spotting spills that much easier. Those who wheel this boat will also appreciate the massive rectangular windshield and good sight lines.
For a vessel with this much onboard space, the Daychaser can actually get up and go to the tune of a top end of 36 knots. I found her steering to be quite responsive as well through slaloms and hard-overs at a 30-knot cruise. The boat can also access most places with a 2ft 3-inch draft, and a low-profile hardtop for bridge clearance (including the 14-person life raft mandated by the Coast Guard for Barton & Gray cruises).
The Daychaser 48 is a really nicely designed dayboat that will serve well not just Barton & Gray clients but any owner looking for something thoughtful and just a bit off the beaten path. Not too shabby for a model that was effectively willed into existence.
