Mariah the Scientist Ry Ry World

By Owen Myers

Pop/R&B

July 15, 2021

The opening 20 seconds of “ RIP ,” a beat-switching standout from Mariah the Scientist ’s Ry Ry World , feel like a cosmic ascension, pianos and synths glowing like sun-haloed clouds. “I’m speeding on my way home from Eleven,” she sings, a likely reference to the Miami superclub. The beatific vibes are a feint—the song bottoms out for swampy bass and a menacing, pitch-shifted Beach House sample . “I dream to be a fool,” Mariah sneers, as 808s hit with the sting of a slap. “That way you wouldn’t know that I knew what you do.” You can picture her swerving between lanes, glassy-eyed. Unable to kick this boy in the balls, the gas pedal will have to do.

Mariah’s second album confirms her as one of modern R&B’s realest talkers, as well as one of its most vivid storytellers. Her earliest songs began as poems, and there’s an imagistic quality to Ry Ry World ’s casual evocations of, say, snow on a sunroof during a trip to Toronto, or the “damage in the brain matter” inflicted by a lover’s mixed messages. Less consistent lyricists would make these lines into centerpieces; for Mariah, they’re scenery.

The careful observations endow Mariah’s storytelling with particular heft. “I want to remind my fans to ‘tell it like it is’ because it helps define your character,” she said in an interview last year. “If you’re gonna be the bad guy, own it.” She commits to the bit with flair. With its pitched-down “Cry Me a River” sample, “Revenge” morphs from a confessional to a murder ballad; Mariah bares emotional wounds before imagining righteous payback. “Tell ’em that in death we’ll meet again,” she sings, voice cracking. “Like it ain’t your blood that’s on my hands.” You could imagine it soundtracking some avant-garde production of Macbeth , but it runs deeper than theater, too. It can be easier to pour out your heart by couching its secrets in hyperbole.

Ry Ry World is concise at just 10 tracks; along with recent projects from serpentwithfeet , Jorja Smith , and Victoria Monét , it’s a refreshing counter to the more bloated releases of major label R&B. At times the brevity is frustrating. With production from Swedish duo Jarami ( Frank Ocean ’s “ Chanel ,” “ Biking ”), the 90-second intro “Impalas & Air Force 1s” feels like a blissed-out drift through a coral reef. It would be welcome at triple the length. The unmemorable “Maybe” slides into watery ambience, and cheap shots at “big booty [...] city girls” don’t add to its likeability. Mariah is at her best when she focuses on her own desires and agency. Over Spanish guitars on the raunchy “Walked In,” she plays feature artist Young Thug at his own game. “Off the Tesla, yes sir,” she instructs, before warning, “None of that cappin’ about booin’ up.”

Fans have long gossiped about Mariah’s past relationship with Lil Yachty ; in “Brain,” over a beat that rattles like a pinball in a sewer, she namechecks one of his tours and seems to describe her own depressive episode from the time. “I just/Wanted to escape for sure,” she sings, adding pained backing vocals. “I was/Staring out the big window, but I/Should've locked the bedroom door.” Once she starts it feels like she can’t stop, in a raw, diaristic digression that’s unique to Ry Ry World . You might find yourself replaying the song to let its brutal honesty sink in.

Around the time of her debut , Mariah defined her music as “a summation of my agony.” Recently she updated that description. “It’s more like after agony,” she said . “Maybe it used to hurt, and now it’s just a little scarred.” She traces that evolution in the wonderful “2 You,” a bittersweet ballad produced by DJ Camper, co-architect of at least two of the past decade’s best R&B songs . “I never thought it would go up in flames,” Mariah sings, as her voice breaks through an airy beat built of oohs and aahs . “But look at what we made/Sure was beautiful.” In the video , she performs against a starry backdrop, as if surveying her past with a birds-eye view. Her eyes are wide open, ready to experience it all.

Lil Yachty Partners With McDonald's Canada For "Menu Song (Remix)"

Ever since McDonald’s launched the Travis Scott Meal in 2020, it’s become a common trend for celebrities and musicians to partner with fast-food chains. In 2021, Saweetie teamed up with Mickey D’s for her own menu edit, with Offset and Cardi B following suit in 2023.

Today (April 2), Lil Yachty and the food giant united for their “Menu Song (Remix).” The pair gave the 1989 classic tune a modern update alongside an accompanying 90-second clip. In the video, the “Strike (Holster)” hitmaker could be seen rapping his order to a cashier.

“Going from working at a McDonald’s in Atlanta to collaborating on the ‘Menu Song (Remix)’ with McDonald’s Canada is a wild, full-circle moment that brought back memories and is such a reminder that anything in life can happen,” Yachty shared in a press statement .

McDonald’s Canada CMO Alyssa Buetikofer added, “We hope these new takes on the McDonald’s Menu Song, brought to life by Lil Yachty and Mike Clay, will evoke the excitement Canadians felt for McDonald’s the first time they heard the song, and look forward to introducing it to a new generation of fans. It’s also a celebration of the love Canadians have for our iconic menu items.”

While artists like Scott and Saweetie arguably take the cake when it comes to brand partnerships, Yachty also has a long list of collaborations. He previously worked with Reese’s Puffs and Reebok. Additionally, the QC rapper joined forces with Nautica for his own collection in 2017.

Musically, 2024 is expected to be a big year for Yachty. In February, he and producer James Blake announced their joint project, Bad Cameo . The first-mentioned musician is also slated to perform at the Dreamville Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina on Saturday (April 6). His other scheduled shows include Milwaukee’s Summerfest, which is headlined by Lil Uzi Vert.

“I just love the evolution that I’ve been on lately and I’ve just grown so much. Before I didn’t really know too much about song structure and it was just run-on sentences all over the place in my writing. I just love where I am right now with my craft.” -Mariah The Scientist

Just as the world began to think that the culture could not shift any more than it has already and that the sound of music that we have can’t evolve anymore, we often are blessed with a wave of new artists that swiftly change our minds and make us fall deeper in love with the music again. With so many people feeling worn out and bored with the sound of music today, we were sitting at the edge of our seat waiting to see what the next sound would be, or who would be the next star to take the culture forward and deliver to the best of their abilities.

Mariah showcases a glimpse of her acting skills in the visuals for her song “Reminders”

Atlanta-native Mariah The Scientist has been in the game for a few years now but recently has been starting to catch flame and skyrocket to the top of the game. Her debut album titled  Master  released in August of 2019, and she dropped off plenty of hits such as “Beetlejuice”, “Thanks 4 Nothing”, and the 80’s-inspired record “Reminders”. Two weeks ago, she released her sophomore album Ry Ry World ,  and she is not here to play around. With a brand new mindset and an evolved ear for music, Mariah is back with even more hits this time and is ready to really show the world what she is capable of.

She and I sat down and we spoke about her upbringing, where she got her stage name from, her creativity in her cover art, and of course, we talked about her favorite moments from her album. Read our conversation in full below!

LL: Tell me a bit about your early life and things you were into before you got into music

MARIAH: I grew up in Southwest Atlanta, and anytime I tell somebody that, I try to mention people that are known that are from that area too. For reference, Lil Baby is from over that part of town. when I got a little older, that’s when we moved over to the Eastside, and that’s more so like Bouldercrest Road—people like Gucci Mane and Future are from that part of town. I graduated high school when I was sixteen years old, so I never got to experience a senior year. So I was just running around the town with the boyfriend I had at the time getting into God knows what. The following year, he and I went to Saint John’s University together out in New York. We ended up breaking up eventually, and not too long after that, I ended up leaving school in my third year to pursue music and move to Miami. After that, I ended up coming back home to Atlanta. I do think that if I never moved to New York, I don’t think I would have stumbled into making music the way that I did.

LL: What was it that made you want to move around the country at such an early age?

MARIAH: Originally, my parents never wanted me to move out of the state, but for New York, I ended up getting a scholarship to Saint John’s. The guy that I was dating at the time ended up getting a scholarship too, so in my head, it was the perfect situation to be in. Once I quit college, I ran into Tory Lanez and he wanted to work with me. I ended up traveling with him while he was on tour. He basically took me under his wing and we grew a really awesome relationship where I can really rely on him for anything. He and his team were big party people and I was never really a party person though. So eventually, I made the decision to go back to Atlanta and build my own relationships. Me moving around so much I think helped me become the person I am today so I could experience new things and meet new people everywhere I go.

LL: Where did you get the “Scientist” part of your name from?

MARIAH: When I was at Saint John’s, I studied biology, so I always had that name. I originally was gonna change that name, but my label and the people around me loved it and told me to keep it. They said it was super marketable and was more authentic to who I really am.

LL: What was it that clicked and made you want to pursue music full-time?

MARIAH: I was contemplating it for a long time, but I was afraid to do it. My parents were really traditional, so when I get to talking about quitting school to do music, they started to look at me like “Are you crazy?”. They grew up in a different time so they didn’t really understand just how many other ways you can get money nowadays and just how many avenues you can go down to get to where you want to be. For the longest, I just started to get detached from the idea of going to class every day and I started to see just how expensive school was and how much it would be to go to medical school. I really just went out on a limb, and about a year after that, labels started to reach out to me to sign me. At first, I didn’t really want to sign a deal, but it just made the most sense for me at the time.

LL: Was it difficult for you to get your parents on board with the idea of you doing music?

MARIAH: Definitely. The idea of me dropping out to do music, they were not going for that at all at first. My dad really didn’t want me to quit, so I just never told him that I did at first. My mom ended up being a little cooler with it than he was. I remember telling her like “Hey, after this Easter break, I might not go back to school”. She was still trying to convince me to stay, but I just didn’t go.

LL: Who are some of your earliest musical influences?

MARIAH: I’m inspired by a lot of the oldies. Growing up, my dad would play a lot of older music like Motown type of vibe, or like Jackson 5, eventually some Mariah Carey came into play. He was pretty diverse with his music taste. On a good day, when I’m shuffling through my music, I might be listening to some Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, definitely Michael Jackson too. I have conversations with people al;l the time about if I think the older music would still go off if it were released today, and I’m not too sure if it would just because the sound of production has changed so much. Sounds are so much different now and it really has evolved from what they used to be. The game right now is really on some futuristic shit which I respect, but the oldies were a lot more simple and still had that impact.

I do think that old sound could begin to make a comeback though when the right people do it. I’ve had talks with Brent Faiyaz and we had a long conversation about how he wanted to implement a lot of older shit like how Usher made Confessions  and that style of production. It just feels very nostalgic and has such a classic vibe and I think that it would be nice to hear more people bring that style back so it can live in today’s world.

LL: How has it been for you so far navigating the industry as a brand new artist?

MARIAH: I think that for anybody, it’s gonna be really hard in the beginning just trying to learn the in’s-and-outs of the industry. It’s not like you can just get one co-sign slapped on you and then you lit for the rest of your career—you still have to put that work in and keep it going. You have to be persistent and your work ethic has to outdo the next person’s work ethic to be recognized. It’s been a lot of ups and downs, and to be honest, there were times where I really didn’t wanna do it anymore. I don’t wanna say that the game is “unfair”, but it’s a very political game and that’s something that a lot of new artists don’t really know. I’ve never really been the type to have to play the political games of having to please someone just to get this and that.

I do wish that there were a lot more genuine individuals in the game now, ’cause I feel like a lot of that is missing right now. A lot of these relationships and friendships are fake, and I don’t do too well with that. We need those genuine platforms to exist for people to be themselves on. Like when I first discovered Lyrical Lemonade and I met Cole for the first time, everything just felt so genuine, and that’s what I love the most about this platform. It made me feel like this is a place where I wouldn’t have to beg anybody for an interview or something like that, just because you all are so tapped in and you don’t play the politics.

LL: Over the past few years, women have been killing the game—not just in music, but the culture overall. How does it feel to see so many powerful women making this much of an impact on the world right now?

MARIAH: I think it’s fire. I won’t sit here and say that women are inferior or superior to men or anything, but I do think that if all the women were to fall off of the face of the earth, a lot of the men would be lost and confused. Some people could say the same about men too, but I think there needs to be an equal balance in general. The idea of everything being cohesive, and just the idea of the feminine and the masculine goes hand-in-hand and complements each other really well. I don’t think we should be against each other anymore.

For a long time, it was this super misogynistic wave of energy that was over this culture. I remember my first or second year of college, Playboi Carti put this video out and it was this girl giving head in the back of the video and I was just like oh my god, the world is gonna end [laughs]. It blew my mind that it was able to be put out like that. But I think over time, some men started to realize that the more you respect women, the more respect you get.

LL: You’re fresh from the release of your second album Ry Ry World. What makes this album different than your last album  Master ?

MARIAH: I think most importantly, my perception has changed. With the first project, I was just sad and miserable like “damn, this n**** is just making me sick” type of shit, and I’m over that phase now. I remember telling someone else that a lot of types it may seem like I’m talking about someone or to someone, but really I’m just talking to myself. I may change a few pronouns around here and there and it gives the music a completely different direction. I’ve felt new emotions that I never have before and I just view things so differently now than I have before.

Mariah shines with the stars in the visuals for her song “2 You”

With my last album  Master , I remember tweeting about it recently saying that I felt like some of those songs were skips. There were a few songs on there that I really didn’t want to put on there, but the feedback around me for them was so strong that I put them on there anyway. With  Ry Ry World , I don’t skip shit on this project. I love it so much. I’ve made songs since I’ve turned my project in and even those songs I love a lot. I just love the evolution that I’ve been on lately and I’ve just grown so much. Before I didn’t really know too much about song structure and it was just run-on sentences all over the place in my writing. I just love where I am right now with my craft.

LL: I’m a huge fan of amazing cover art, and I love when artists invest in their cover art or put a message into it. Can you explain to me the meaning of the cover art for  Ry Ry World ?

MARIAH: The video coincides with the video for my song off of the album called “ Aura “. I’m being chased and shot at with arrows. You can’t see who’s shooting me, but it’s missing me at first. Eventually, I get shot and I fall to the ground. While I’m on the ground dying basically, the sky starts to open up and glow. I wanted the cover art to kind of serve as a metaphor really of something that feels like a fatal attraction. Something could be bad for you, and you know it’s bad for you and probably the death of you, but you’re so stuck on it. You can’t really tell that it’s bad for you because you’re trying to look at the brighter side of things. Love can hurt you so much and you can be so blindsided by it because other parts of it feel so good.

LL: What’s your favorite song on the project?

MARIAH: Right now, I love the song “ All For Me “. Earlier when we were talking about song structure and how I’ve gotten so much better at it, I feel like this song is a really structured song and I love the entire flow and layout of it. I just had my first concert with a live crowd the other day and I performed it and it was lit. I felt like I was really in it on that one.

LL: A lot of your material is surrounded around the topic and subject matter of love. Why do you think music about love sticks with the fans so much?

MARIAH: I think that everybody, and this is gonna sound corny as fuck, but everybody falls in love sometimes. You really can’t avoid it, even when you want to. Even for the people that haven’t fallen in love, I kinda feel bad for them because it teaches you some things that you won’t learn anywhere else. I think that even with the people who haven’t fallen in love, I’ve done a pretty good job at describing it and portraying it to them to the point where it feels intriguing and they want to try and feel that.

LL: Have there been any songs for you that have been difficult for you to write because you’re so open in your music?

MARIAH: I think the material that I have been working on recently that’s currently unreleased is probably the most vulnerable I have ever been on a song. To be honest, I don’t know how open I will be to talking about it once it’s released just because it’s so open, but I’m very excited to be able to release it one day. I’m sure there will be a lot of questions, but shit, there’s a lot of questions on this project too. I have no choice but to be myself at all times though. People will always question it, but I will always keep doing me.

LL: I saw your tweet the other day and you mentioned that the fans told you “Walked In” featuring Young Thug is gonna be the new club anthem. Have you been out and heard that playing in the clubs yet?

MARIAH: Yes, I have! I also was in the hair salon the other day and I heard it playing too. But yes, I went to the club and they played it and it seems like people were vibing to it even if they don’t know the words to the song yet.

Mariah taps in with Young Thug for her anthem “Walked In”

LL: Are there any other things you would love to get into outside of music one day?

MARIAH: Absolutely. I think one thing that I noticed myself being a science major in school, a lot of the scientific topics are very stale for the younger generation. I want to find a way to modernize it and make it fun and interesting to people. I want to shed some light on interesting topics that people may not know much about. Everything around us is science, like the phones we talk out of are all connected to poles and towers and all of that and that stuff is science. I think that a lot of the things that people may be intrigued by is related to science, and I just want to make those topics fun and easy to learn about.

LL: Why should people listen to Mariah The Scientist?

MARIAH: I would say it’s real and it’s not scripted at all. I don’t have anyone picking my clothes out, I don’t have anyone writing my lyrics. My aesthetic, my cover arts, and all are all me and my thinking. Even if some ideas may be inspired by other people, it’s still an original idea of mine. My sound is really authentic and I believe that I can serve as an inspiration to people. I won’t say what you should or shouldn’t be inspired by, but I personally am inspired by more authentic people and authentic art. I’m just a real ass bitch, and that’s that—and I hope that people can respect that.

mariah the scientist buckles music artist alternative rnb ry ry world album

Atlanta R&B singer-songwriter Mariah the Scientist created her stage name after her time at St. John’s University in New York, where she majored in biology. Her plan was to become a pediatric anesthesiologist, but after her relationship with her then-boyfriend ended on a bad note, Mariah met someone new who shared her passion for music. And that changed everything.

Wanting to communicate her feelings through a medium they both understood, Mariah wrote two songs for the boy and recorded them at a studio in Queens. When the artist’s friends discovered how talented she was, they encouraged her to upload her To Die For EP to SoundCloud. It didn’t take long for RCA Records to recognize Mariah’s original work and sign her. In 2019, the singer dropped her debut studio album titled Master , a 10-track project that shows her being the most real she can be. “I don’t think I’ve ever been able to write a song that isn’t about something that really happened to me,” she said in a press release.

In the latest installment of  BAEwatch , Mariah discusses what made her change her career path, her love for music and more. Read our conversation below.

Mariah the Scientist’s latest album, Ry Ry World, is now out on Spotify and Apple Music .

mariah the scientist buckles music artist alternative rnb ry ry world album

You were studying biology at St. John’s not too long ago. What do you think you would be doing now if you didn’t pursue music?

If I had stayed in school, I would’ve gone into the medical field. I wanted to be a pediatric anesthesiologist.

What made you change your career path?

I’m blessed to have some really encouraging friends who saw my potential and told me to pursue it seriously. My parents were against it, but I chose to risk all of what I had back then [to be] someone I never imagined being.

What was the very first song you wrote and what was the inspiration behind it?

The first song I wrote was probably wack, but it was a Valentine’s Day gift I made. I guess I was inspired by the sentiment of really thoughtful gifts that have nothing to do with materialism.

mariah the scientist buckles music artist alternative rnb ry ry world album

Who or what made you get into R&B?

My parents put me on to a lot of music growing up. Sure, there were lots of R&B, but my taste is very curated — much more than just rhythm and blues.

Are you able to integrate the knowledge you’ve acquired from St. John’s into your work ethic now?

I’ve always been the type to finish my work in advance. College showed me the difference between really wanting something and only wanting to want it.

Who are your musical influences and who do you dream of working with in the future?

I love Outkast and Frank Ocean .

What’s the concept behind the music video for your single, “Always n Forever”?

I wanted “ Always n Forever ” to be a genuine vibe and to have aspects of how ratchet I was before I ever made dollar-making music. The concept was a little different than how it came out though. Fortunately, I still f*cked with the product.

Most of your songs revolve around heartbreak. Which of your tracks mean the most to you?

All my songs mean a lot to me. The one that means the most is unreleased. I produced it.

Following the release of Ry Ry World , what are you working on for the rest of the year?

I’m looking forward to more live shows, traveling and [releasing] a deluxe album.

Mariah the Scientist Says She Wants to Marry Young Thug and 'He Definitely Wants to' Too

The pair teased marriage in the music video for their 2021 collaboration "Walked In."

Mariah The Scientist invisions a bright future with her current romantic partner Young Thug

In a recent appearance on the Baller Alert Show , Mariah didn't shy away from expressing her love for Young Thug.

When asked if marriage is the next step in her relationship with Thugger, the "From A Woman" singer said, "You mean when he gets out of jail? I don't think either of us want a jail wedding."

Mariah added that she and Thug both want to exchange vows sometime in the future. "I feel like he definitely wants to be married, and I feel like I do too," she said.

Back in October, Mariah shed light on the evolution of her relationship with Young Thug during an interview with Complex's Jessica Mckinney ,

"It's like I have something where I’m very proud to have him," she explained. "We have a really good balance. We just do, and I just feel like people don't understand, but it's really not for them to understand. But what I will say is that's not gonna stop me from doing me."

Mariah continued by sharing how collaborating with Thug strengthens the couple's bond.

"I think creating together is one of the most intimate things you can do, especially when the subject matter is relevant to your situation," she shared. "It's like a time capsule. We can refer back to it. It’s like, that's how I felt at the time. I would like to see what we made going further."

Mariah The Scientist Album Review: A Love Letter To Young Thug

Mariah The Scientist Album Review: A Love Letter To Young Thug

Mail

Mariah The Scientist is one of the artists where once you hit play, you can’t stop listening.

lil yachty and mariah the scientist

The singer-songwriter exploded onto the scene with her Lil Baby-assisted “Always n Forever,” who’s official music video boasts over 18 million views and counting. But it’s actually not her most streamed song on Spotify. “Spread Thin” reigns high, with “2 You” and “Only Human” coming in hot as fan favorites.

Now, Mariah The Scientist unveils her highly-anticipated new album titled To Be Eaten Alive , which she deems her best music yet. Clocking in at ten tracks, the new project features standout features from Young Thug, 21 Savage, and Vory. It also serves as her first project since 2021’s Ry Ry World .

While Mariah has been making music for some years now, she also admits that this wasn’t a dream she had since she was a kid. It’s actually something “she fell into,” proceeding to state that she doesn’t even consider herself a singer.

Fans of Mariah might be surprised to see she’s finally opening up and doing interviews (thanks to the project), showcasing her personality a little more than what we’ve seen. On the opening track, “Heaven is a Place on Earth,” Mariah revealed she actually produced the song herself — as a result of being bored during quarantine.

Moving into the second song, “Good Times,” we start to hear Mariah’s romantic side. Contrary to previous releases, she’s starting to bask in her current relationship with Young Thug, who has been locked up since May of 2022. Mariah goes on record saying she talks to Thug every day, all day. And that jail calls were expensive!

This leads us to the next song: “From A Woman.” This was Mariah’s rendition of Young Thug’s “From A Man,” which released just two weeks prior.

“40 Days n 40 Nights” was refreshing to hear, pairing Mariah’s smooth and buttery vocals with Vory ’s. Vory first gained recognition after appearing on songs with Meek Mill. Then we get into the uptempo “Out of Luck” produced by Kaytranada, showcasing her ability to create and mesh with different producers and creatives.

Mariah also went on record about how she sees herself as an A&B artist, Alternative & Blues versus R&B. You can hear these influences in the new project, which may or may not be inspired by the bond her and Thug has shared since he was locked up. “Bout Mine” sees her crooning: “Baby, I got nothin’ but time. We finna make this right ‘Cause you know I don’t, I bet you know I don’t play about mine.”

“77 Degrees” boasts a feature from one of her favorite artists, fellow Atlanta artist 21 Savage. This song tells the story of a female in love with a gangster and the reality of what comes with love. Leading into “Different Pages,” my personal favorite. Being in a relationship takes work from both parties, and sometimes you have to agree to disagree.

The last two tracks reveal the love letter to her bae, Jeffrey Williams. “Lovesick” sees Mariah singing at the top of her lungs, presumably fueled by this new energy between the lovebirds. But with Young Thug actually appearing on the closing track, “Ride,” Mariah reminds audiences all around the world that there is that special someone out there for you.

Regardless of all the trials and tribulations, true love will always prevail. This was also a great follow-up track to “Walked In” featuring Thug on Ry Ry World , which was the start of their love story (at least to the public’s eyes). All in all, To Be Eaten Alive is no skips. And we’re rooting for Mariah and Thug!

It’s been a few years since Mariah The Scientist delivered her debut studio album MASTER, and now she ready to officially present her next body of work, Ry Ry World . This week, she drops off the first taste from her next chapter. Her new track “2 You” arrives accompanied with a stellar new music video, which sees her surrounded by intergalactic lights as she delivers her first verse:

Guess it’s best to get this out in the open, like my heart was once, but now it’s closing/ You were lost and a little unfocused, but maybe you hoped I wouldn’t notice/ Disappointed is the least I could say, who knew these women would lead you astray
I guess you just wanna live life outside a cage (A cage), and I hope you change (You change)/ But look at what we made, sure was beautiful/ Now I lay it in the grave

Back in 2020, REVOLT honored Mariah The Scientist as one of 2020’s “Women To Watch,” specifically highlighting her song “Beetlejuice.” The piece said her “sultry sounds speaking to a modern romance full of ups and downs” and “her honesty is the fuel to her artistry.” Fast forward a year later, she has continued to cement her status as an artist through her honest lyrics.

In terms of Mariah’s artistry, she analyzed in one of her only recent interviews the origin of her songwriting. “With the shit I was going through, wondering why I was feeling the way I was feeling,” she says. “I couldn’t help but try to dissect that. So it’s like: Your heart is broken, and you feel so shitty, what is responsible for that? And then it turned more sentimental, almost like storytelling.”

Megan Thee Stallion, Gunna, PARTYNEXTDOOR, and more announced for 2024 Broccoli City Festival

T oday (March 18), the official lineup for the 2024 Broccoli City Festival was revealed, which showed Megan Thee Stallion, Gunna, and PARTYNEXTDOOR as the main headliners. KAYTRANADA, Victoria Monét, Key Glock, Sexyy Red, Lil Yachty, and many more were also confirmed as performing acts.

In addition to the music, this year's BC Fest will have several "live experiences" with the likes of Issa Rae , Desi Banks, Funny Marco, Duke Dennis, and Bryson Tiller as hosts. It will also be the first time that the celebration will take place at Washington, D.C.'s Audi Field venue.

Broccoli City co-founder Brandon McEachern previously spoke to REVOLT about the reasons behind the festival's creation. "We definitely knew that we just wanted to continue to touch more people,” he said. “When you think about folks that might not be able to go to Disney World, but you got this festival. You might not be able to see Drake because the tickets are too expensive, but we’re gonna hold you down. We’ll give you something instead."

McEachern continued, "We started this joint in 2013 in Los Angeles and we called it Global Coolin’. It had Dom Kennedy and Kendrick Lamar , and we had the healthy juices. It was an Earth Day celebration. It’s always about [a] healthy lifestyle, wellness, and sustainability. It’s always like, 'How do we hold y’all down?'"

In 2023, BC Fest took place at RFK Stadium and boasted appearances from big names like Asake, Brent Faiyaz, Chlöe, Coco Jones, Jazmine Sullivan, Keke Palmer, Mariah the Scientist, Finesse2Tymes, GloRilla, Ice Spice, and Kodak Black . A short recap video for the two-day extravaganza stated that more than 50,000 people were in attendance.

Lil Yachty Revives A Classic McDonald's Anthem In New Ad For The Restaurant

The rapper is actually a former McDonald's employee himself.

Lil Yachty: The Field Trip Tour - Atlanta, GA

McDonald's is no stranger to celebrity cameos and collaborations and that includes musicians. Often that comes through their own custom celebrity meals, of which they've done multiple. K-pop group BTS, reggaeton singer J Balvin and subsequently pop icon Mariah Carey have all lent their names to specific meals from the restaurant. The rap world is also well represented with Travis Scott , Saweetie, and Cardi B having collaborated in the past.

But in their new advertisement, they're taking the hip-hop collaboration in a much more literal direction. For a new commercial in Canada, where McDonald's is celebrating their new remix menu, they got Lil Yachty to do a remix of his own. In the ad he delivers an updated version of the classic "Menu Song" from advertisements the restaurant aired in the 80s. Yachty in particular feels like the perfect choice for the collab, as he's spoken in the past about working for McDonald's as a teenager. Take a look at the full remix he delivered below.

Lil Yachty Steals The Show In New McDonald's Advertisement

Over the weekend, Lil Yachty flirted with creating controversy. He shared a video explaining why he thinks some rappers are so angry, and they might have been offended by it if it wasn't so funny. Yachty claims that the simple reasons some rappers are so angry is that "they're ugly." The hilarious clip made the rounds online and didn't seem to cause too much trouble for the rapper.

Yachty has been working with a ton of young up and coming artists recently. He recently formed his own label, Concrete Rekordz. Additionally the project already has multiple signees who have dropped a few songs as "Concrete Boys. " There's also a label compilation album from Concrete Boys releasing in just a few days. What do you think of Lil Yachty's new McDonald's advertisement? Do you think it's impressive that he went from working at McDonald's to collaborating with the restaurant? Let us know in the comment section below.
