SoliDaire project

The goal of our association , "La mer en SoliDaire" , is that Podorange sails in helpful and supportive way. The project "une transat en soliDaire" which will take place from September 11 to November 5 2009, is our first project for this association.

  • A challenge both sport and solidarity : cross the Atlantic under sail with a crew including two young people with disabilities, and Gilles Margarita and Maxime Portfer aboard a 20 meters yacht, Podorange.
  • A strong symbol , "a crew of solidarity to ensure the safety of lonely sailors." Our boat Podorange, will be both "escort boat” and reporter boat of a mythical race: the Transat 6,50 Charente Maritime Bahia.
  • A mediatization original and unprecedented ; twice a week, we'll related our adventure through the "Chronicles of Podorange video”, shot, produced and sent live from the boat. To live racing picture and the history of our journey! The chronicles will be on the home page of the race website(more than 7 million visits in 2007).

In summary : A project that combines both sporting challenge, social action and media coverage for one goal: Changing perceptions on disability! For this project, we are looking for partners. Donations and funding of a "transat en soliDaire" are tax deductible.

Wiencke Island, Seven Sisters of Fief; Cape Renard, Southeast Tower

Antarctica, antarctic peninsula.

Beginning on November 21, Laurent Bibollet, Emmanuel Chance, Yann Delevaux, Paul Dudas, David Lacoste, and I, operating from the yacht Podorange , made the first traverse of the Seven Sisters of Fief, above Port Lockroy on Wiencke Island. The first day we climbed the most southwesterly sister, Janssen Peak (1,085m, a.k.a. the Seventh Sister, first climbed in 2000), from the south. This gave ca 500m of snow and ice at 50–55°, with a 3m step of vertical snow right before the first top. We followed a fine snow ridge to the second top of Janssen peak and then made 10 rappels down the south side, from Abalakovs and deadmen, to the bergschrund, where we camped for the night. We had been unable to continue directly to the second peak because of ice mushrooms.

On November 22 we walked around Janssen Peak on the southeast side and climbed ca 300m of steep snow and ice to regain the crest before the Sixth Sister. We followed the ridge to an overhanging snow mushroom at the base of the summit, then made a 30m rappel on the east flank. From that point, two pitches (80° ice; 60° snow) led to the top. We continued along the sharp ridge, making three rappels down the center of a huge mushroom to reach the col between the sixth and fifth sisters. The ridge to the Fifth Sister had sections of steep snow at 60–70°. The descent was very steep and required three rappels, after which a snow ridge with a section of 65° led to the top of the Fourth Sister. We reached a large saddle below Sister Three and gained its summit via 50° snow. The descent to the next gap was a trial of route-finding, as we were in complete white-out. Keeping to the crest throughout (generally 50°, with two sections of 70°), we reached the summit of the Second Sister. On the far side we went down snow slopes of 30–40°, then made two 60m rappels to gain a wide, flat glacier. The summit of First Sister (first climbed in 2001) was one hour away. We reached this final peak at 7 a.m. on the 23rd. At one point a cornice broke and I fell 20m.

We descended to the south, then moved northeast before making eight rappels from Abalakovs and pitons down a wide couloir on the Port Lockroy (north) side, and finally reached our yacht at 3 p.m, after being on the go for 30 hours. It had been an exposed and committing route, more than 11km in length and graded TD+. Wings on ice axes were essential.

A few days later, Laurent Bibollet, Karine Payot, and I made the first ski and snowboard descent of a 300m couloir (50–55°) below Janssen on its northwest flank, after which we traveled to Cape Renard and on December 1 made the first ascent of the Southeast Tower (700m).

Starting from the ocean, an exposed approach under a serac was followed by slopes of 40° to reach easy glaciated terrain leading to the base of the southwest face. Once across the bergschrund, Laurent, Emmanuel, Yann, Paul, David, and I climbed 100m of 60° snow to arrive at a dome. A second bergschrund guarded three pitches of 55° snow, above which 200m of mixed rock and ice, where we got good belays from pitons and cams, was followed by another 100m of snow slanting to the left. The crux came right below the summit: 15m of M5, followed by a thin ice gully (70°), leading to 80m of atrocious snow. We slanted right, bypassing the final snow mushroom, to the flat and uncorniced summit. We descended our route in 10 rappels from deadmen and pitons. We named the 500m route (TD/TD+) Podronard after our boat, and completed it in a 13-hour round trip.

Luxury treatment for world racer

The boat Mike Golding raced round the world twice has been turned into a luxury cruiser

Did I know, wonders Tim Petitt, that another former world-girdling Challenge 67 besides Podorange  has undergone extensive modifications – of the luxury kind?

Yes, I had heard but I hadn’t seen the pictures. Tim, who used to work for Challenge Business and “for my sins have continued visiting most of the old 67s & 72s [to carry out] MCA code surveys” has been keeping an eye on the transformation of Mike Golding’s old Group 4 yacht, in which Golding won the 1996/7 BT Global Challenge and later sailed solo westabout the world.

It has, unbelievably, been transformed into a mini superyacht, at a cost rumoured to have run to several millions.

The yacht was refitted at Danish Yachts in Skagen, which has changed tack to specialise in carbon fibre superyachts. It has been renamed Ecover Zero of Skagen and is off to the South of France.

The connection between all these strands is Jorgen Philip-Sorensen, former chairman of Group 4 Securitas, a major shareholder in Ecover, longtime sponsor of Mike Golding, majority shareholder in Mike Golding Yacht Racing – and owner of the yard in Skagen.

podorange yacht

In November and December 2015 a sail/ski expedition took place to Antarctica lead by Jim Blyth. We sailed across the Drake passage from Ushuaia to the Antarctic peninsula on the expedition yacht Podorange and spent a month finding wonderful mountains to enjoy.

An international (sic) group went on the expedition led by Jim (Scottish-Chamonix) supported by a second guide Manu (Corsican). Bernard and Beatrice came from Chamonix, Derek, Grae, Dee, Roger all came from Glasgow and Jim from Sheffield.

The Expedition yacht

podorange yacht

Podorange , a 67' challenge yacht is owned and skippered by Brice, supported by his partner Corrine and helped by Orlan. Despite being French, Brice having a love of Ukrainian folk music and Corrine (Coco) insisting on showing me a book of her dog, they were outstanding ... it was a privilege to be on their yacht and see them at work.

Podorange was built for the BT challenge round-the-world race in 1996. It has a length of 67', beam 17' and weights 42 tons. It is sloop rigged with three sails; a 100sqm mainsail combined with a front stay-sail and a yankee. It is steel bodied with a stainless steel deck, galley/saloon under deck box, 2 rear cabins, 4 front cabins, 2 toilets, and a sail/storeroom. With wind, and sailed conservatively, the yacht would average 7 knots sometimes reaching up to 10. The yacht has been owned by Brice for 8 yrs and is one of the few expedition yachts in the region.

Whilst sailing the Drake passage we had 4 groups of watches of 2 hours (i.e. 2 on, 6 off) with a crew member for the crossing. Jim/Manu/I had sunset/sunrise watches, excellent : ) It's blxxdy cold on these watches as you are static for 2 hours .. sometimes being lashed by wind and sleet. Typically we cooked breakfast, the crew cooked dinner and we helped washing up.

We sailed from Ushuaia (Argentina) to Puerto Williams (Chile) then down past Cape Horn and across the Drake passage past the South Shetland islands to the Antarctica peninsula, 1000km over 4 days. Podorange then supported us whilst we skied in various locations on the peninsula and nearby islands.

Eastward HO 24

Eastward HO 24 is a 23 ′ 7 ″ / 7.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Walter McInnis and built by C. E. Ryder starting in 1975.

Drawing of Eastward HO 24

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Originally designed for wood contruction. The hulls of the later, FG version were built by CE Ryder (USA) and finished by Portsmouth Yacht Co. Diesel power was available as an option.
