The architect

Germ á n frers.

All of Nautor´s know-how and experience in racing and cruising yachts have been incorporated into this new blue-water Swan 78, a direct descendant of the original Swan 80 and 82 models of the past. She is slightly shorter overall – in order to meet the EC 24.00 metre length overall limitation – beamier and more powerful. The modern hull lines, including a wide stern above the waterline, twin rudders and racing oriented keel design, are a reflection of the rapid evolution of yacht design during the past years, propelled by the experiences made on round-the-world races and other offshore events. The new boat is faster, safer, easier to control and, as a result, more comfortable at sea. The keel options include deep telescopic lifting, fixed deep and fixed shallow possibilities yet maintaining stability, the same rudder configuration and standard sail plan. The same could be said of the deck with its modern design, uncluttered surfaces and straightforward, simple solutions to sail handling and life at sea. The appearance is that of neatness and efficiency. Centered around the main saloon and engine room, which maintain the same position facilitating weight distribution, planning of installations and flotation trim, presenting three cabins: one double berth VIP and two twin berth layouts. These allow for side by side bunks on the second and third guest rooms. Crew accommodations for two are ample and functional in both cases. This new Swan is, and will be, the best of her kind for years to come.

Square top main option

The deck is the one area of the yacht where owners, guests and crew spend the most time. Here is where the yacht is handled under sail, and here is where guests enjoy the seascapes at anchor. The Swan 78 deck layout is the most recent evolution of the “S” concept (Semi-raised Saloon), with the celebrated Swan coachroof, discreet and streamlined, with panoramic views from inside, due to the raised saloon. On the 78 Frers signature lines have given their very best, with sleek curves that create a volume capable of protecting the cockpit and creating more space below. The coachroof design is a masterly mix of curved lines and multifaceted surfaces, with 360 degree windows and a generous roof that doubles up as a sunbathing area. The recessed sprayhood and the full beam bimini keep guests always well protected in a cockpit/lounge that features two C shaped settees each with its own table.

All manoeuvres are at the centre of the cockpit and can be handled easily by a reduced crew. The five available winches are well placed around the helm stations with a central tower dedicated to the mainsheet. As an option, a captive winch for main sheet can be provided.

Further aft the deck is equipped for sunbathing and swimming, with a completely open space than can be equipped with cushions and access to the beach area, which also opens a full beam lazarette that can stow a rigid inflatable.

Forward of the mast the deck is completely uncluttered, an expanse of pure teak that ends at the forepeak with the large locker for the anchor.

The interior designer

Heini gustafsson.

To provide the most flexibility and satisfy any possible owners’ requirement, in the interiors configuration the Owner has a large suite forward, cooler and quieter. It is 4.5 m long, with an island bed that is completely accessible on three sides. A desk and dedicated bathroom, with large separate shower compartment, complete this luxurious apartment.

The accommodation also features three guest cabins with different layouts, all ensuite with separate shower compartments. The saloon is also over 6 m wide. It is raised to provide better panoramic views. Below, ample bilge volumes allow for a full beam engine room, totally soundproofed and large enough to accommodate a variety of systems and equipment. The crew quarters are separate, forward or aft according to the chosen layout, with an ensuite cabin. The galley is in the same area, with large cooking areas and refrigerated stowage.

The celebrated Nautor finish guarantees top quality both in the technical details and in the finishing, with a wide choice of veneers and accessories.

swan sail yacht

Sailing a Swan 78 is an experience that instantly explains the latest design trends for sailing yachts. The first feature that emerges is her extreme stability during sailing, made possible through her twin rudders. Indeed, as heel angle increases, the geometry in the water alters to adapt to the new position. The windward rudder lifts while the leeward one dips progressively, becoming more perpendicular and at the same time more efficient. Heeling stability is guaranteed – with the first few degrees of heel, the hull form facilitates prompt acceleration even in light conditions. Heel angle stabilises at around 20 degrees, remaining symmetrical and balanced throughout. Beyond this inclination, the hull shape contributes dynamically to the vertical force provided by the T-shaped keel, maintaining the optimal hull position.

All this translates into two fundamental and apparently opposite effects. These are that performance is optimised keeping the hull sailing to its lines and therefore all the naval architecture including keel and rudders at maximum efficiency, and at the same time the yacht remains comfortable and liveable, allowing life on board to continue normally even when sailing upwind for long distances. If her performance off-wind appears obvious, the new Swan 78 amazes even more upwind. Perfect balance translates into unexpected agility, with the helms remaining light. The rudders, almost always at centre, are only necessary for changing course. This allows those on board to play amongst the waves and promptly follow wind shifts. The Swan 78 allows her crew to sail at double digit boat speeds constantly and safely, easily managing manoeuvres from around the twin helms. At anchor, the various areas for relaxing, protected from or immersed in the elements, allows those on board to fully enjoy the surrounding scenery.

Nautor's Swan Yachts for Sale

The Nautor’s Swan shipyard is located in the small Finnish town of Pietarsaari, just a short distance from the Arctic Circle. On this icey stretch of coast, Nautor’s Swan have been building boats since 1966 and the Swan range is known throughout the world. In a build environment where temperatures can fall to minus 30 degrees celsius, and the sea can be frozen for up to five months of the year, advanced engineering excellence is a core part of the yard’s DNA.

Nautor’s Swan handles everything from the design to the finest details in a fully integrated in-house building process. The smaller Nautor’s Swan hulls, for cruising yachts, are hand laid-up and vacuum-infused, while the larger models are constructed in foam-core carbon, which has huge weight-saving benefits.

Swan yacht buyers can also enjoy membership of ‘Club Swan’ – a non-profit organization for past, present and future Swan sailing yacht owners. The Club organizes various regattas, including the ‘Rolex Swan Cup’, the ‘Swan European Regatta’ and the ‘Swan American Regatta’ and these are run in association with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the Royal Yacht Squadron of Cowes and the New York Yacht Club, respectively.

Today, with more than 50 years’ of heritage, Nautor’s Swan is globally recognized as an undisputed leader in the international sailing market.

History of Nautor’s Swan Yachts

The Nautor’s Swan Shipyard was founded in 1966 by Pekka Koskenkyla, a man with an inspiring vision to produce high-quality, high-performance sailing yachts for those passionate about cruising, racing and seeking contact with the ocean and nature. Pekka, educated in the USA, had the foresight to engage Sparkman & Stephens of New York, one of the most acclaimed yacht designers at the time, to design the first sailing yacht. The vessel was built in fiberglass and trimmed with wood – materials which would dominate the production of vessels in the years to come.

The first sailing yacht model from the Nautor’s Swan shipyard was the Swan 36, and this led to the Swan 37 and Swan 43, with the latter winning the Admiral’s Cup in 1969.

That same year, fate’s fickle hand dealt the Nautor’s Swan yard a catastrophic blow. The Assembly Hall caught fire and burnt to the ground, destroying with it a dozen hulls in various stages of production. Pekka was forced to sell stakes in the company to finance the yard’s rebuild and see production resumed.

When the yard was re-established, the larger and more elegant Swan 55 and Swan 65 yachts were born. Partnering cruising capability with racing prowess for the typical owner and recreational yachtsman, the designs were immensely popular. Testament to their racing ability, it was a Swan 65 (named SAYULA II) that won the first Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973/74.

In the late 70’s and early 80’s, Nautor’s Swan engaged naval architect Ron Holland as their designer of choice. Holland designed five boats for the yard, of which approximately 300 units were produced.

The mid to late 80s saw Swan enter another new era of design, this time with the appointment of German Frers. Along with a string of great successes in models under 80 foot (24m), Frers was also responsible for Swan’s first Maxi models; the Swan 80, Swan 90, Swan 100, Swan 105, Swan 110 and Swan 115 – with the 115 seeing the yard cross over into superyacht territory.

Frers’ contribution to Nautor’s Swan also permitted them entrance to the ‘one design’ racing sector, with the design of the Swan 45 in 2001. This was followed by the ‘Club Swan 42’ in 2005 which was developed in association with the New York Yacht Club.

In 2002, a new yard, close to the sea, was opened in Jakobstad. The new yard is dedicated to the assembly of the Maxi Swans, building the Swan 60 through to the Swan 115.

In 2017, Nautor’s Swan opened their Boatbuilding Technology Center. Here, there are facilities dedicated to joinery and high-tech lamination, a post-cure oven, painting halls, and areas for warehousing and logistics. The close proximity of the engineering and manufacturing departments results in an efficiency that is rarely seen.

Nautor’s Swan has been controlled and managed by Leonardo Ferragamo and his group of investors since 1998.

Nautor’s Swan is recognized as a leader in the international sailing market.

The Nautor’s Swan collection

Known today as ‘Swans’, the modern yachts built by Nautor’s Swan owe their success and acclaim to the original Swan 36. This first design, which featured a number of significant innovations, offered a level or performance and safety that equalled that of traditional wooden vessels yet the lighter fiberglass hull provided greater steering ability and enhanced living space. The Swan 36 marked the beginning of what would become one of the most prestigious boat yards in the world.

The Swans of the ‘70s and ‘80s were designed by the award-winning naval architect Ron Holland. German Frers took over as Swan’s naval architect of choice from the mid to late 80s, and he designed many highly successful models under 80 foot (24m) for the shipyard.

Swan’s first Maxi yacht models were also designed by Frers: the Swan 80, Swan 90, Swan 100, Swan 105, Swan 110 and Swan 115. The 115 brought Nautor’s Swan into the superyacht sector and the skills of Frers’ have again been employed for the design of Swan’s latest sailing yacht, the Swan 120.

Nautor Swan Has A New Pocket Rocket

ClubSwan 28 rendering

Nautor Swan is best known for the modern-day giants of its fleet, but they’re now extending their range into the high 20s with the announcement earlier this year of the ClubSwan 28, an impressive-looking sportboat from avant-garde designer Juan Kouyoumdjian that is said to be “based on the concept of simplicity, quality and, of course, pure one-design speed.”

Expected to be launched by late summer, the ClubSwan 28 has been conceived to be “as simple as possible,” while still maintaining a high level of performance in every condition. Nautor Swan’s design brief says: “Both hull and deck will be built using specifically reinforced fiberglass, with carbon mast and no backstay. The hull has been designed to perform well in all conditions, specifically in the medium/light winds.”

ClubSwan 28 rendering

The deck layout design provides a clean and safe cockpit for a crew of four, allowing to race leg-in, sitting inboard. “All the ergonomic studies have been done around this feature,” says the builder. “The ClubSwan 28 will have a full kite retrieve system with a sliding hatch on the bow.”

Thanks to the lifting keel and dimensions, the boat is trailable, and is anticipated to be rigged and unrigged in few hours only. As the renderings show, the sail plan is powerful and the sail quiver includes a mainsail, a jib, an AP kite and a reaching kite.

ClubSwan 28 rendering

The concept of the rig is all about simplicity, based on one single movement of the rig up and down through a dedicated and simple hydraulic system (mast jack) the mast bend and headstay tension is achieved simultaneously without the need of a backstay thanks to the configuration of the shrouds.

“ClubSwan 28 is not going to be extreme but will have great performance in medium/light breeze,” says Federico Michetti, Head of Sports Activities and Product Manager. “The brief was to have a boat not pushing to the limits of absolute performance, but it is a boat easily manageable and easy to sail.”

Nautor Swan continues the expansion in its motor yacht division by presenting Swan OverShadow , the 13+ meter power yacht redefining the concept of enjoying life at sea. The elegance and style of Nautor Swan’s has been perfectly reinterpreted by Jarkko Jämsén, resident Swan Shadow designer, focusing on the main elements in the Finnish brand’s DNA: quality, innovation, performance and reliability.

The Swan OverShadow is based on the high-performing hull of the Swan Shadow, which is particularly efficient and seaworthy, and features an inboard engine and two alternative layout configurations upper and below deck.

The flush deck offers great livability with an external wet bar / galley, and an over 2-meter-long sunbed. A very generous dining area deploys around the sofas for a convivial vibe. The ample space on the deck has been made possible by positioning the sunbed more aft over the inboard engines. This also frees up the stern area, providing a more functional aft deck for the driver to maneuver, making the boat easier to handle.

The stern platform has the same functionality as in the Swan Shadow, with three positions: central position for driving, upper position serving as a passarelle, and below water level position for easier access to the water when swimming or doing watersports.

The brand-new Swan OverShadow features a high and wide windshield, offering more protection in the cockpit and ensuring more safety and comfort for the driver and co-pilot while cruising at higher speeds.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

swan sail yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

swan sail yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

swan sail yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

swan sail yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

swan sail yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

swan sail yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

swan sail yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Black Swan: A prima ballerina on what it takes to perform an iconic role

Last chance to catch Swan Lake at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre

If you've ever seen the film Black Swan, which explores the pressures of artistic excellence, you'll know that ballet isn't quite as effortless as it might look.

Someone who can tell you firsthand about the extreme physical demands involved is British ballerina Rachel Hernon.

Currently a guest principal dancer with the Moscow City Ballet, she arrived in Dublin this week to perform the lead role of Aurora in Sleeping Beauty and the dual role of Odette and Odile in Swan Lake. Both parts are notoriously tough – even for virtuoso performers.

swan sail yacht

The most famously challenging sequence in Swan Lake is perhaps the 32 'fouetté (whipping) turns in the Black Swan panada. It requires the performer to revolve on a mostly pointed toe an incredible 32 times in a row. A dizzying feat, which requires immense strength, grace and precision. So tricky, it actually drove Natalie Portman mad in Black Swan (well, it didn't help, at least).

"After standing on your left leg [‘en pointe’] for the majority of the second act up until that moment, it is pretty heavy on your legs...so that’s a huge challenge," Hernon admits.

But she's keen to point out that embodying both the White Swan and the Black Swan is not an easy feat of acting either, as the roles are "extremely different".

"With the White Swan, you’ve got this very kind of serene, calm, very sad princess swan,"  she explains, "and you have to show the difference with the Black Swan, Odile, who seduces the Prince and tricks him."

Having performed the classic ballet hundreds of times all over the world, Hernon says she never tires of it.

"With [this] Swan Lake, it’s a slightly different production than I’ve done before... it’s been brought to life for me again. It never gets boring, it really doesn’t. Because it’s one of those ballets that’s so challenging. With it, you find something new every time you get on stage."

For the 30-year-old prima ballerina, the adrenalin rush and excitement of being on stage never really goes away.

swan sail yacht

"I also get a bit terrified sometimes as well," she says. "But when you’re on stage and you’re feeling really in the flow that day, it’s an indescribable feeling.

"Some people might have that kind of love for a person, or something like that. It’s just complete love, complete ecstasy. You just feel free in a very strange kind of way."

Despite working with several major Russian ballet companies over the years and training there as a younger dancer, she says it's a "really big honour" to perform with the Moscow City Ballet, and she's planning to stay on full-time after the tour.

"I’ve found teachers that really put everything into their dancers and it really shows in the performances," she says.

"It’s great for a ballerina to be guided, because you never stop learning... It just gives me the opportunity to push forward and keep improving, which is something I never want to stop doing."

Perhaps the most famous ballet of all time, there's still time to catch Swan Lake at the Bord Gáis tonight and for two performances this Saturday. But what can someone who's not really au fait with ballet expect?

"The storylines have been made so clear, the costumes are absolutely beautiful, the decorations [too] and we have a live orchestra, which makes it really special," she says.

"It’s a different atmosphere... Even if someone’s coming to ballet for the very first time to watch these performances, they’re gonna really enjoy it, and understand clearly what’s happening on stage. Just come along and enjoy yourselves."

Swan Lake is at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre tonight (Friday 14 February) and Saturday 15 February for both matinee and evening performances. Tickets are available from the Bord Gáis website .
