Enterprise: Is this restored 12 Metre the best yacht to never contest the America’s Cup?

Yachting World

  • November 19, 2019

Enterprise is a 1977 S&S-designed 12 Metre, originally built to defend the America’s Cup, and fully restored in time for this year’s 12 Metre World Championships in Rhode Island. Dave Powlison reports

Among the 21 elegant Twelves lining the docks at Rhode Island’s Fort Adams for this summer’s 12 Metre World Championship, sat a yacht that for many was a huge disappointment. Enterprise , built for the 1977 America’s Cup , had everything going for her, but never got the invitation to the Cup she seemed destined to receive. Today, she’s arguably the best set-up 12 Metre in the world.

Designed by Olin Stephens and David Pedrick at Sparkman & Stephens, and built of aluminium at the Minneford Yacht Yard, Enterprise boasted a number of firsts. She was the first design to be tank-tested on a large scale, with a handful of models measuring roughly 7m each, in tanks designed for the aerospace and military industries.

Results from those tests suggested that over a typical 24-mile America’s Cup course in an average 10-knot wind, Enterprise would be a minute faster than her rivals.  Enterprise was also the first yacht to pioneer laminate sails, using plastic films to stabilise the more conventional Dacron. Her sails included the ‘garbage bag’, a light airs genoa that (in colour, at least) suggested its moniker.

The 1977 Challenger matches were a rematch of the 1974 Courageous v Intrepid rivalry between upstart west coaster Lowell North and eastern establishment sailor Ted Hood.

At North’s right hand was sailmaking wunderkind John Marshall, who would be a dominant presence in Cup competitions for years to come. Many of Enterprise ’s crew had cut their 12 Metre teeth on Intrepid ’s successful 1970 Cup defence. In fact, Intrepid was brought out of retirement and trucked to San Diego to spar with the new design.

Yet it was Courageous , a 1974 design, that secured the spot to defend the Cup ( Courageous successfully saw off Alan Bond’s Australia in the Cup match). So what went wrong for Enterprise ? Anyone who knows the boat well won’t hesitate to respond. “ Enterprise had a foretriangle dimension that was about three feet shorter than what was conventional,” Marshall explained to me recently.

Enterprise hull is now painted battleship grey – the original colour was white

Most 12s have a 24ft foretriangle, give or take a bit. Enterprise ’s was 21ft. “Computer predictions that evaluated flow over surfaces suggested this would give us an edge,” Marshall recalled. But when it came to tacking, getting the stiff headsails quickly across was a challenge, as there was now 3ft more sail that had to pass around the front of the mast.

“The jib didn’t fill quite as quickly, and we didn’t accelerate quite as quickly coming out of tacks,” Marshall adds. In the early challenger races, Enterprise performed well. But as the summer progressed, Courageous got distinctly better. “Once the difference got down to being pretty small, and the boats were always close together, tacking performance became much more important.”

Consider that it wasn’t unheard of for 12 Metres to do over 50 tacks on a four-mile beat, and it’s clear why the writing was on the wall.

Fujin: The inside story of this carbon catamaran’s Caribbean refit

After Fujin capsized during the 2018 RORC Caribbean 600 race it would have been understandable if owner Greg Slyngstad had…

Back to her best

Fast-forward to 2019 and Enterprise is back in fighting form. After stints in the Med she had been donated to the US Merchant Marine Academy Sailing Foundation.

With the impetus of the forthcoming 2019 Worlds in Newport, a major refit was begun in earnest. Tommy Rich, from New England Boatworks, which carried out the refit, recalls: “The boat had been bastardised. They had put a flush deck on it and a bogus interior, and it was basically in a state of disrepair.”

The refit was done over roughly two years, and in that time virtually everything on the boat was upgraded or replaced, except the hull and framework.

enterprise-restored-1977-americas-cup-boat-hull-structure-credit-Paul-Todd-outside-images

The hull structure is one of the few parts of the boat that remains original

Rich explains: “S&S, along with David Pedrick, designed a new keel. The boat got a more modern spade rudder to replace the old, barn-door type, and a more modern deck. That included new cockpits and a spinnaker pole trough – basically all the working deck – as well as a new chainplate structure.”

The boat received a new rig: an aluminium mast, as per the class rules, but with carbon used everywhere else, as well as all-new Harken hydraulics. And, of course, the ‘J’ foretriangle dimension is at 24ft once again.

For this level of investment in time and money, there was just one goal: to win the World Championship. Enterprise was chartered by Clay Deutsch for the summer, but the race started even before she had hit the water. “The challenge for us has been the calendar,” says Deutsch. “We didn’t have the boat in a position to go sailing until the end of May. And it’s pretty humbling how long it takes to get these boats dialed in.”

enterprise-restored-1977-americas-cup-boat-double-wheels-credit-Paul-Todd-outside-images

Double wheels: outer one for steering; inner one for trim tab control

Nevertheless, her pedigree showed quickly. In her first competition in Newport this summer, Enterprise posted a pair of 1sts in the two final races. In the 2019 World Championship in Newport she finished a solid 2nd overall in the Modern Division to the more seasoned Challenge XII .

For Deutsch, the 12 Metre seed was planted long ago. “When I was a kid, while other kids had baseball and football cards, I had an Intrepid scrapbook, and I have always fantasised about 12 Metres. Then, out of the blue this past winter, North Sails’ Mike Toppa came to me with, ‘What about Enterprise ?’ It was the furthest thing from my mind, and I just figured we wouldn’t be there.”

But Deutsch was persuaded, and work shifted into a frenzied pitch at New England Boatworks. “I remember when I first looked at it, and it was in a million pieces, and I said: ‘I’m not a professional, but my amateur opinion is that this boat has no chance of being ready.’

enterprise-restored-1977-americas-cup-boat-asymmetric-foredeck-credit-Paul-Todd-outside-images

Asymmetric foredeck hatches – the port hatch has a roller on the aft side for spinnaker take downs

“But Ben Quatromoni, the project manager, and his team jumped on it, working around the clock, and we made it to the starting line.” Today Enterprise ’s decks today are remarkably spartan for a 12 Metre: it’s 1977 meets 2019 technology, with lots of carbon. “The boat setup is complicated,” says Quatromoni, “but it’s very user-friendly.”

The port foredeck hatch has a roller on the aft side, TP52 -style, for the string take down spinnaker system. Once around the roller, the chute is pulled through a Dacron tube that runs to the stern. With the grinders working in unison, the sail disappears in five seconds.

Control lines run through custom-made carbon ‘trumpets’, allowing them move effortlessly out of sight. Carbon reels take up the halyards. These are ratchet system reels, where one control line spins the reel, bringing the halyard in, and another control line releases it. Unlike those reels, the spinnaker take-down reel is powered off the pedestals.

enterprise-restored-1977-americas-cup-boat-spinnaker-takedown-bag-credit-Paul-Todd-outside-images

The spinnaker take down bag; the spinnaker comes down through the forward deck hatch and is pulled through this long Dacron bag

The aluminium cockpit has been lowered to get the grinders down and allow the boom to just avoid grazing the deck when fully sheeted in. But the boom is low. “Man, is it crowded,” says Deutsch. “I can barely fit under the boom – when we’re tacking, I’m literally down on all fours.”

The port and starboard jib trimmer pits have hydraulic controls for the jib tack and jib leads, which is standard for the Twelves. As on most 12 Metres, below decks is anything but simple.

The 150ft of mainsheet runs from the traveller car up into the boom, forward to the gooseneck, below deck, then aft to a turning block where it goes up into the mainsheet pod. Rather than using a winch for the traveller, the car is controlled by a Harken magic wheel below decks, with a 17:1 purchase.

With so many hydraulic systems, continual pumping is required to keep them pressurised, and the aft cockpit pedestal is set up to run a rotary pump, mounted below, for that purpose. For trimmers, there’s no downtime. Once they’ve finished trimming, it’s back to pumping to keep the hydraulics powered up.

The workmanship on many of the systems is truly extraordinary. The turning blocks for the spinnaker sheet and guy are so inconspicuous as to be barely noticeable. The traveller control line looks as if it has been simply laid on deck.  Enterprise ’s original white hull is now battleship grey. Coupled with black spars, the effect is stunning.

The layout can be entirely customized by the owner, as can the decor and furnishings. The lower deck is currently configured with two guest staterooms, three crew cabins, and a VIP, while the main deck features another VIP, the owner’s suite, a spacious lounge, and a functional galley. Two additional crew cabins are located in the bow, while the upper deck sports a lounge, a pantry, the captain’s cabin, and the wheelhouse. The interior could be tweaked to include one epic family area or even three VIPs. Owners can also add a spa to the owner’s suite or the VIPs.

Outside, the cat offers over 3,000 square feet of deck space for alfresco dining, entertaining, and lounging. The partially sheltered sundeck is adorned with sunbeds and a bar, while the upper deck is home to an inviting Jacuzzi. Down below, the stern is equipped with fold-out platforms that can be lowered to connect guests with the ocean. The expandable area doubles as a waterside beach club and a mooring spot for runabouts or Jet Skis.

Mariani says he can further develop the project with an engineer and interior designer, meaning that the chosen shipyard should be able to easily execute the build. He just has to reel in an owner.

Restaurants, food and drink | in-n-out burger’s oakland restaurant closure, called the chain’s first, looms this weekend.

yacht enterprise

In-N-Out Burger will go ahead with plans to close its Oakland restaurant this weekend, the Irvine-based fast food chain confirmed in an email Thursday.

The drive-thru’s last day will be Sunday, March 24, as the company announced in late January , citing crime in the area as endangering customers and employees. Statistics show the crime situation is starting to improve, city leaders have said recently .

The announcement made national news In-N-Out’s “first time ever” permanent closure, as CNN put it. In-N-Out was founded in Baldwin Park in 1948 by Harry and Esther Snyder and in the following 75 years grew to 401 locations.

There were, however, restaurants early in the chain’s history that no longer exist.

That’s because from 1948 to 1952 the Snyders had a partner named Charles Noddin. When the Snyders split with Noddin, there were six restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley. The Snyders kept three, and the three that Noddin got were renamed and eventually closed, as Lynsi Snyder, granddaughter of the founders as well as current owner and president, explains in her 2023 book “The In-N-Outs of In-N-Out Burger.”

The Oakland restaurant is No. 193 and opened in 2005, according to In-N-Out’s list.

Restaurants are numbered chronologically, No 1 being in Baldwin Park, although the original stand was closed in 1954 and rebuilt nearby due to the construction of the 10 Freeway. Store No. 401 opened in Madera on Jan. 5.

In-N-Out didn’t say what if anything would happen to Oakland’s store number.

baglietto launch forward

First look inside 38m custom Baglietto Enterprise

Following the delivery of 38 metre custom superyacht, Enterprise in 2022 by Italian builder Baglietto , the yacht's interiors have been revealed as she joins the charter fleet. The styling is contemporary with elegant neutral tones, freestanding furniture and ample natural light thanks to her large windows and custom layout.

Built in aluminium to a design by Francesco Paszkowski , Enterprise is defined by a straight bow and extensive use of glass on the main and upper decks. Her profile alternates soft lines at the stern with more powerful sections at the bow, complemented by large windows amidships. According to the owner, she is the largest 38 metre vessel by volume ever built at 440GT, granted by an 8.8-metre beam.

The newly unveiled interiors were created by WLW Designs in collaboration with the shipyard’s in-house design team. Broad open spaces have created the illusion of a much larger project, while her clean and uncluttered living spaces – particularly in the main saloon – have resulted in a sophisticated finish.

With accommodation for 10 guests on board, Enterprise has ticks all the boxes for a charter vessel. She has three decks, each with ample lounge areas and entertaining space, not to mention an array of toys on board, including a WaveRunner, two SeaBobs, paddleboards and lots of tow toys. Up on the sundeck, Enterprise has a fully stocked bar, an additional lounge area, and a unique glass hot tub, which is designed to give a true "infinity" illusion.

Due to her larger volume her five cabins also benefit from additional space and include a master and VIP cabin. The master, which is on the main deck, has a full beam arrangement with full-height windows, a private office, soundproofed doors, his-and-hers bath en suite, and a central rainfall shower

Much like the main deck, the contemporary theme flows through the cabins, which have marble inlays, polished steel hardware and white lacquered surfaces.

Fabio Ermetto, chief commercial officer at Baglietto, said at her launch: “Enterprise is a highly innovative custom project for which a brand-new platform was developed and she has definitely the potential to become the first of a series.”

The owner also spoke about the yacht’s custom design: “What began as a sketch on a piece of paper… a villa on the sea, has become real. A yacht that will make a statement wherever she goes: bold, striking, sleek. People will ask 'What is it?' They will know it is unique. They will know it’s a Baglietto.”

Enterprise is powered by two Caterpillar ACERT C32 engines, delivering a top speed of 18 knots. She is managed and available to charter with Burgess.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht screamed 'I will kill you' and threw $100 bills into the water when told he couldn't use a private dock

  • The owner of a Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee, per CBS8.
  • The employee said Ajay Thakore mooned and threw cash at him after being told he couldn't use the dock.
  • Thakore, the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, issued an apology through his public relations team.

Insider Today

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee after being told he couldn't be there, the San Diego-based broadcaster CBS8 reported on March 11.

Joseph Holt, a 21-year-old employee at Marriot Marina in San Diego, told CBS8 that he spotted the yacht sailing into the private dock. The owner, whom CBS8 identified as Ajay Thakore, tried to pick another person up at the dock, Holt said.

"I told him respectfully that he couldn't be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat," Holt told CBS8.

In a YouTube video posted by @SM-wc9eq on March 10, a dark blue Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is seen sailing out of a dock. A man in a gray T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and a cap was shown standing on the yacht. The man appeared to be Thakore, per CBS8.

Thakore was shown shouting at Holt. "I will kill you, you know I will kill you!" he can be heard saying multiple times in the video

Thakore was later shown pounding his fist on his palm and pointing his thumb down before telling Holt: "To your face!" Holt was shown responding by pointing his middle finger at Thakore.

"I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt told CBS8.

Related stories

Holt said Thakore then took $100 bills from his wallet and threw them at him. He added that Thakore mooned him. This exchange was not shown in the video.

"He was saying I'm nobody, I'm nothing, I work a silly job. He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it," Holt said. Holt did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The San Diego Harbor Police arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore's yacht exited the dock, per CBS8.

The Harbor Police told Business Insider that Holt decided to press charges against Thakore and that they are investigating the incident.

According to Thakore's LinkedIn page , he's the CEO of Doctor Multimedia. The company's website shows that it's a healthcare marketing firm based in San Diego. Thakore appears to go by the name Ace Rogers on Instagram and TikTok, where he's noted as being a professional gambler.

Thakore, through his public relations team, told CBS8 in a statement that his altercation with Holt was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement said. Thakore did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

Thakore isn't the only CEO who's been called out for threatening another person. In November 2021, an Activision spokesperson told BI that its ex-CEO Bobby Kotick had previously apologized for telling his assistant he would have her killed. The spokesperson added that Kotick's threat was "obviously hyperbolic and inappropriate" and that "he deeply regrets the exaggeration and tone."

In June 2020, Lisa Alexander, the CEO of LaFace Skincare, a cosmetics company, apologized in a statement to the media after she had threatened to call the police on her neighbor for writing "Black Lives Matter" on his property. Alexander said in the apology that she was "disrespectful" and "should have minded my own business."
