Where do you get started to plan moving a boat by road.

Following each customer’s initial enquiry & quote approval, we begin the meticulous planning  process that ensures a trouble free move for the boat, the owner and ourselves. Initially a verbal contact will be made to establish a maximum price range for the move. This has to take into account the probable time and  distance involved, the boat dimensions, any special escort requirements etc.

With those parameters established, we then set about planning the safest, most economical and efficient movement procedures for the boat. At any one time we may have up to eighty “live” enquiries and although they will not all be delivered by us [unfortunately], they provide a matrix or draft timetable, allowing  journeys to be linked and expensive “empty running” eliminated or at least reduced to a minimum.

We are constantly contacting customers to outline alternative dates or timing so ensure the best balance of timing and affordable rates. The objective is to fit all the various factors into a working combination – creating an opportunity for everyone to benefit from a cost effective, safe and efficient boat moving operation. Each week, plans are carefully drawn up for the following week, enabling bookings to be made with all parties. (With some busy boatyards bookings may have to be made much sooner) Police will be notified of “Abnormal Load Movements” where appropriate, escort vehicles booked if required and boatyards and marinas advised of arrival times.

Making your boat safe for transport by road

• All ornaments and unsecured items inside the boat should be placed on the floor or beds and covered with cushions. (The boat will get a comfortable ride on our air suspended trailers but delicate items should be protected or removed)
• Gas bottles and batteries should be turned off and isolated.
• Hazardous materials must be removed
• Radar arches, radio aerials and lighting gantries should be lowered or removed.
• Splash screens should be removed or protected unless they are very strong and permanently fixed.
• In almost all circumstances canopies should be removed. Many owners baulk at this but, apart from the obvious damage implications, torn or loose canvas could become detached and blow onto a following motor-cyclist.
• Yacht masts should be placed on top of the boat wherever possible, carefully wrapped and insulated from vibration and chafing.
• Ropes and fenders should be stowed safely.
• These tasks should normally be carried out by the owner and / or boatyard staff but our drivers and attendants will help with safe stowage.
• Any keys or paperwork requirements should be agreed in advance.

Typical loading procedures prior to boat transport

If we are picking your vessel up from a boat ramp we will contact you prior to run through what needs to be done. Very simply you will have the boat driven to the agreed location & we will proceed to lift it out of the water for you.

If we are collecting from a boat yard or marine they will generally have a crane, hoist or forklift with a crew of qualified operatives to load the boat onto our trailer.  We work together with them to ensure that the craft is safely placed on the vehicle, the keel lowered onto padded blocks on the the chassis, and the hull supported with adjustable padded arms. Ensuring that  the boat is safely “cradled” for transport by road.  The boat is then inspected for damage and if the owner is absent, pointed out to the loading team. The owner may be called and the damage photographed.

The travelling height of the load is carefully measured, ensuring that the vehicle will pass safely along the selected route (We can check the height against known bridge limits and ensure that the chosen route is safe.  More risky is the potential damage caused by low branches of trees especially after periods of rain. Hence our insistence on the removal of canopies and other vulnerable items. 

Having stowed any ropes and fenders safely within the boat, the load is then strapped to the trailer.  As the journey progresses – especially in the early stages – frequent stops are made to check the security and safe condition of the boat to ensure it is not moving about. Once we are satisfied we will continue driving to the planned destination for unloading.

How do I prepare my boat to get moved by a transport company

If your boat is about to get moved by a boat transport company these are the main things that have to be prepared before pick up

• Masts must be lowered and either secured on the deck, or completely stripped (spreaders, lights, wind instruments, antennas, etc) so that the mast can be transported on the bed of our trailer. Booms and spinnaker poles should either be placed down below or securely fastened on the deck.
• All canvas should be removed. Any covers or canopies left on are moved at your own risk.
• All warps, fenders, life rings and other loose items on deck should be stowed. Anchors should be secured.
• Aerials should be lowered, hatches and windows secured.
• Depending on the type of boat and where it is being transported from and to the following items may need to be removed; radar arch, propellers, rudders, light mast and windscreen. The radar dome itself should be removed and placed in the cabin.
• Water tanks and bilges should be drained. Water, gas, electric and fuel supplies should be switched off.
• Remove any hazardous or flammable materials.
• Tenders on davits and outboards on brackets should ideally be removed and stowed below deck. If left attached they should be properly secured.
• Outdrives (if fitted) should be fully raised.
• Keys must be left with the driver. If the transport involves crossing a border, we will also need the following original documents: registration document, proof of purchase (bill of sale).

For same-day local metropolitan deliveries, the fuel surcharge is 9.6% and for overnight/interstate deliveries the fuel surcharge is 17.4%. Fuel costs are forever changing and so cannot be included in our rates. The fuel surcharge covers the cost of our driver’s fuel needs. This surcharge is not negotiable and cannot be waved.

As Go Heavy Haulage is a company and by law, we must pay our drivers for all hours worked.

No Job : Where a pick-up is booked, but the consignment is not available at the nominated time or location, a futile pick-up charge of $18.50 per pick-up is applied.

Wait/Load Time: Courier: $4.95 per 5 minutes is charged, after the first 15 minutes of waiting time at either the pick-up or the delivery point.

Interstate: $36.61 per hour, in increments of 15 minutes, after the first 15 minutes, is charged for waiting time at either the pick-up or delivery point.

Australian Documentation Import Requirements for Boats

If your boat is paid off:

• The original title of the boat (the title will be mailed back to you after presenting it to customs)
• Bill of sale (if you purchased the boat recently)
• A copy of your passport, ID, or driver’s license

If your boat is not paid off and has a lien:

• An original and notarized letter of permission for overseas transport signed by the lienholder
• A notarized front and back copy of the title
• A copy of your ID, passport, or driver’s license

If your boat has a trailer:

• All boats with trailers require import permits. (This is required even if you don’t plan on using the trailer in Australia.)
• Apply for the permit directly with the Department of Infrastructure .

Australian Duties / Taxes Due

General guidelines on Australian Boat Duty & Taxes

For American-made boats shipped from the USA to Australia, there is No Import Duty. Please be aware if you buy a boat or yacht in the USA which was manufactured in another country an Import Duty of 5% FOB applies. This is the value of the boat plus the freight costs including any inland transport or repairs to the boat

• American made boats imported from any country other than the USA will also incur import duty of 5%
• Import GST of 10% applies to all boats & yachts on the CIF value, which is the cost of the boat or yacht, the cost of the insurance and the freight costs including any inland transport or repairs to the boat
• The exchange is based on the day of departure from the USA supplied by Australian Customs

Cost and Transit times vary greatly depending on where your boat is in the USA and what Australian port it needs to ship to.

• Transit times can vary depending on multiple factors, but generally the entire process takes between 30-50 days
• Please note you’ll need to factor in additional days for customs clearance and vessel loading/unloading.

Australian Quarantine Approval

You’ll have to get approval to show that your imported boat meets Australian Quarantine Standards. The Australian Border Force (ABF) is very strict on the potential of importing foreign boats and parts containing asbestos.

Trans Global has worked very hard over the past years to build a complete offshore pre-cleaning and an asbestos pre-testing/removal program with the ABF. Now the only approved offshore cleaning facility by the Australian government in the U.S.A, our West Coast facility enables us to offer “Guaranteed Pre-Cleaning” meeting the Australian Bio-security requirements for vehicles and boats

All boats and yachts with air conditioning or refrigerator units require an additional “Ozone Protection” import permit from the government to gain entry to Australia. There are exemptions from this rule including:

• If you owned your boat for over a year and use it for private use.
• Is being imported to Australia for private use.
• Uses less than a certain amount of chemicals during a calendar year.

Yes, TGAL is one of the few international boat shipping companies in the US that offers a certified asbestos pre-testing and removal program for vessel shipments to Australia . In collaboration with the Australian Border Force (ABF), we have built an asbestos cleaning facility on the US West Coast. The facility is the only offshore asbestos cleaning center approved by the Australian government, meeting the country’s biosecurity requirements for vehicle and equipment imports.

• Inland Transport within the USA and Australia – Trans Global arranges road transport anywhere in the USA to the terminal and also to any city within the Australia.
• Marine Insurance – Per the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act (COGSA) liability is limited to per shipment. What we know about Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday after being hit by a cargo ship, with large parts of the bridge falling into the Patapsco River.

At least eight people fell into the water, members of a construction crew working on the bridge at the time, officials said. Two were rescued, one uninjured and one in serious condition. The remaining six are presumed dead.

10 ships are stuck inside the Port of Baltimore besides the Dali, officials say

Ten ships in addition to the Dali are stuck inside the Port of Baltimore following the collapse of the Key Bridge, federal authorities said Wednesday.

The  Bureau of Transportation Statistics  said the following vessels are stranded behind the fallen bridge:

• three bulk carriers
• one vehicle carrier
• two general cargo ships
• an oil/chemical tanker
• three logistics naval vessels

Officials also cited a container ship, a reference to the Dali, the vessel that collided with one of the supports of the Key Bridge on Tuesday morning.

There is also an additional vehicle carrier in the port but outside the bridge.

Biden spoke with Maryland governor and other top officials to discuss bridge collapse

President Joe Biden met with top officials in the Oval Office Wednesday on the ongoing federal, state and local response to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, according to the White House. 

He met with Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg as well as US Coast Guard Vice Admiral Peter Gautier, and he spoke to Gen. Scott Spellmon.

Biden also spoke with Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and reiterated his administration’s support for the people of Baltimore. 

What we learned about the Baltimore bridge collapse today as the investigation continues

Investigators are working to learn more about what happened after a massive cargo ship collided with Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday, causing it to collapse. A team from the National Transportation Safety Board, which is leading the investigation, went aboard the ship to gather evidence.

Meanwhile, cold water temperatures and choppy waters are affecting divers' attempts to find the six bodies of those missing, who are presumed dead.

Here's where things stand:

• Workers missing: Three Mexican  nationals were among the people on the bridge when it collapsed — two of them are presumed dead and one person was rescued. A father of three from El Salvador  has also been identified  as one of the missing, as has a father of two  from Honduras  — both of whom had lived in the US  for almost two decades . And two  Guatemalans  are among those unaccounted for. The US State Department said it will reach out to any countries whose citizens were impacted.
• What to do about the debris: The Coast Guard is working with the Army Corps of Engineers to remove the parts of the bridge that are sitting on the bow of the ship so that it can be moved out of the way, according to Vice Adm. Peter Gautier. Dozens of containers with hazardous materials are among the more than 4,700 cargo containers that remain on the ship, he said, but they are not a threat to the public.
• Dangerous conditions: Search and recovery operations have resumed after they were  halted overnight  due to dangerous conditions, including “very unstable” sections of the steel bridge and shipping containers hanging from the cargo ship, Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace told CNN. Divers also have little visibility at the bottom of the river, officials said previously.
• Environmental impacts: There are no drinking water intakes near the site of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collision that could compromise drinking water quality, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said. The agency has at least two regional officials in the field with the Coast Guard to help with assessments, according to an EPA spokesperson.
• Paying for repairs: There is not yet a cost estimate for damages due to the collapse or a timeline of how long the bridge will take to rebuild, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said. He vowed to hold any private company found liable for the incident accountable and added that the bridge was not designed to withstand the impact from the 200-million-pound container ship.
• Coming up later today: The NTSB will give an update Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET. Baltimore remains in a state of emergency,  Mayor Brandon Scott told CNN . He says he expects it to remain in place for the "foreseeable future."

Dali cargo ship suffered "severe electrical problem" while docked for 2 days before crash, port worker says

The Dali cargo ship was docked in Baltimore days prior to the crash and was facing a “severe electrical problem,” a port worker told CNN’s UK affiliate, ITN.

Julie Mitchell, co-administrator of Container Royalty, a company that keeps track of the tonnage on container ships that comes into Baltimore, said the ship was in the port for two days.

“And those two days, they were having serious power outages… they had a severe electrical problem,” Mitchell said. “It was total power failure, loss of engine power, everything.”

She said refrigerated boxes kept tripping breakers, while mechanics had generators running while they were trying to fix the ship. CNN is unable to independently verify the information.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said Tuesday that the crew of the ship notified officials that it had lost power prior to the crash.

Mitchell said these types of power problems are “not really that common at all,” calling Tuesday’s incident “very rare.”

“They shouldn’t have let the ship leave port until they got it on under control,” she said, adding that she did not know whether the issue was fixed before the ship set sail.

CNN has reached out to the operator of the ship, Synergy Group, for comment.

2 missing Mexicans in bridge collapse are originally from Veracruz and Michoacán states

The two Mexicans missing after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, are originally from the states of Veracruz and Michoacán, according to a statement by the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs Wednesday.

Remember: The Mexican nationals are among others missing. A father of three from El Salvador has been identified as one of the missing, as has a father of two from Honduras — both of whom had lived in the US for almost two decades . Two Guatemalans are also among those unaccounted for.

Buttigieg says rebuilding Francis Scott Key Bridge will not be "quick or easy" but it will get done

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg reiterated Wednesday that they still do not know the full condition of the portions of the Francis Scott Key Bridge that did not collapse and emphasized that the rebuild process will be complex and potentially expensive. 

"We are committed to delivering every federal resource needed, every federal resource needed to help Maryland get back to normal, and we're going to work with them every step of the way to rebuild this bridge. It is not going to be simple," he told reporters at the White House during a briefing. "Rebuilding will not be quick or easy or cheap, but we will get it done."

Buttigieg urges Congress not to let partisan politics impede recovery: "Tomorrow it could be your district"

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Wednesday said he hopes Congress won't let partisan politics get in the way of the recovery and rebuilding of the Francis Scott Key bridge.

"Infrastructure is – or at least ought to be – a bipartisan priority," Buttigieg said during a briefing at the White House. "I know that partisanship has gotten in the way of some important functions and expenditures."

But Buttigieg left some room for optimism that lawmakers will work together and overcome their political differences.

"I would also remind any members who might find themselves on the fence ... that today this is happening in Baltimore, tomorrow it could be your district. And we really need to stand together – red, blue and purple – to get these things done."

Teams are working on a plan to remove bridge debris from the bow of the ship, Coast Guard says

Teams of officials are working on a plan to re-float the ship that collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge and move it out of the way as the investigation into what happened continues on Wednesday.

The Coast Guard will work with the Army Corps of Engineers to remove the parts of the bridge that are sitting on the bow of the ship, according to Vice Adm. Peter Gautier, the deputy commandant for operations for the US Coast Guard.

Then, they will work to re-float the ship. The front of the vessel is sitting at the bottom of the Patapsco River because of the weight of the bridge debris, Gautier said. The first step in all of this is to use remote-operated vehicles and divers to survey what is happening under the surface, Gautier said.

One rescue diving expert said that is a dangerous task : Butch Hendrick, a rescue diver and the founder of Lifeguard Systems, a company that trains public safety personnel on rescue diving, said the wreckage under the surface of the Patapsco River is likely “interactive.”

“Right now every piece is twisted, mangled and turned in another format and something as simple as moving one piece can move multiples,” he told CNN on Wednesday.

To make things more complicated, because of the depth of the river, divers have little visibility at the bottom, officials said previously. Hendrick said divers would need to feel around the debris while being careful not to knock anything loose, describing it as "everything is in braille."

There is speculation that so-called “dirty fuel” may have played a key role in the Baltimore bridge disaster that is thought to have claimed six lives.

Container ship the MV Dali was seen spewing black smoke in the seconds prior to it hitting the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the US city on Tuesday (local time) causing it to collapse.

It’s also been reported that the disaster unfolded so quickly, the ship was unable to put down an anchor that would have prevented it from slamming into one of the motorway bridge’s pillars.

A miraculous effort to close the bridge may have saved many motorists from falling into the frigid waters below. But eight construction workers fixing potholes on the bridge were not so lucky.

While two were rescued from the river, six haven’t been seen since the tragedy

Officials have now called off the search effort citing the cold temperature and time passed for believing no one was still alive.

None of the Dali ’s crew were injured despite the bridge’s mangled wreckage wrapping itself around the stricken ship.

Ship ‘black boxes’ recovered

On Wednesday, divers retrieved a data recorder from the vessel, the equivalent of an aeroplane’s black box.

Investigators are now piecing together what led to the shocking collision.

The MV Dali , operated by Singapore based Synergy Marine Group on behalf of Danish shipping giant Maersk, left the port of Baltimore, north of Washington DC, at around 1am local time on Tuesday.

It was bound for Sri Lanka and was carrying 1.5 million gallons of fuel and 4700 containers of which two are now missing.

The 300 metre long vessel was moving at 14.8km/h in the harbour's waters which was necessary to keep a ship of that size from being moved off course by currents.

At the helm was a local pilot rather than the Dali ’s captain which is standard procedure in ports.

At around 1.24am CCTV captured the Dali’s lights going out . A minute later the lights flickered back on, the imagery showed, but that was accompanied by thick smoke coming from its funnel.

A little more than a minute later the lights went out again and the Dal i appeared to slow and drift.

A mayday call was sent out by the Dali ’s crew which gave the bridge’s staff enough time to at least partially close the crossing.

Seconds after that, at 1.28am, it struck one of the Francis Scott Key Bridge’s supports sending the structure, which carried the I-695 Baltimore ring road, crashing into the water.

‘Dirty fuel’ theory

After the collision, the US Government’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued a preliminary report stating the Dali had “lost propulsion” as it was leaving port.

A key focus of the investigation will be why that happened

US newspaper the Wall Street Journal said the probe into the disaster will look at whether contaminated fuel was a factor.

The paper cited a Coast Guard briefing it had seen.

“The vessel went dead, no steering power and no electronics,” an officer on board was stated as saying in the report, according to the Wall Street Journal .

“One of the engines coughed and then stopped. The smell of burned fuel was everywhere in the engine room and it was pitch black.”

The black smoke from a fuel could be a sign of the sullied fuel.

After the engine stopped it’s been reported there was no time to drop anchors to prevent the Dali from drifting.

With the ship slowing due to the lack of the power it may have been more at the mercy of the currents.

Safety officials have now confirmed that so called “dirty fuel” will be examined in the investigation.

Naval experts told the BBC contaminated fuel can cause ships to blackout and lose steering at sea.

While smaller generators are a backup they may not be able to fully power all the ship’s systems.

And besides, they take time to kick in. That might be fine in the wide open ocean but not in a congested and harbour like Baltimore where obstacles abound.

‘Garbage’ fuel

An oil refinery owner told US TV network Fox News on Wednesday that there could be some veracity to concerns about dirty fuel.

Using it rather than proper fuel saved refiners money and it had been sold in the past to schools and transport providers.

“If nobody’s watching closely enough, they’ll give them contaminated fuel,” United Refining Company CEO John Catsimatidis said.

“You know, you give them 80 per cent real fuel and 20 per cent garbage. And the FBI should be looking into that,” he added.

Ship inspections

Singapore authorities have said the Dali passed two inspections last year.

“The vessel’s required classification society and statutory certificates covering the structural integrity of the vessel and functionality of the vessel’s equipment, were valid at the time of the incident,” the Singapore Port Authority stated.

It added that a faulty monitor gauge for fuel pressure was rectified in June.

Nonetheless, the Dali has been issued with two “deficiencies,” in the past according to records from the Electronic Quality Shipping Information System (Equasis).

Last year, Chilean authorities gave the ship a “deficiency” for “propulsion and auxiliary machinery — gauges, thermometers, etc”.

Another deficiency occurred at the Belgian port of Antwerp in 2016 when its stern swung around several times repeatedly hitting the port’s quay damaging the ship’s hull.

It passed its last inspection, in September 2023, in New York City.

More Coverage

The incident has forced the closure of the port of Baltimore, the US’ eighth largest.

While some cargo can be diverted to other ports, there are concerns the closure could cost as much as $23 million a day.
