First time on a yacht: what should you pack?

  • First time on a yacht: what should you pack?

Newcomers to sailing are often put off by the fact they overestimate  the costs involved , find  the booking process  complicated, or think they need specialised sailing gear. It's a lot more inexpensive and simpler than you think. Today we'll be taking a look at clothing, shoes and other essential pieces of kit.

You don't need sailing clothing

It's  only worth buying special yachting apparel if you sail several times a year or venture into the  more challenging conditions of offshore waters. Then you'll be glad to have functional clothing with a membrane that can withstand moisture, cold and especially salt. Salt can destroy clothing at record speed.

But for a summer holiday in the Mediterranean , you can do with the functional and sports clothing you probably already have at home. At most, you should get yourself a good windbreaker or raincoat for cold weather or for serious sailing in windy conditions. But definitely forget about jeans and jeggings — the wind blows right through them, they easily get soaked through so you'll get cold and they are heavy.

For  voyages in spring and autumn, outdoor clothing with a permeable membrane and reasonable water resistance will do the trick. Just rummage through your wardrobe or go to a sporting goods store. Female sailors have an advantage here, as there are a number of waterproof and windproof outdoor leggings and riding pants available on the market. Also, you can never go wrong with a wetsuit.

YACHTING.COM TIP: Read our comprehensive to  guide to yachting apparel  for inshore and offshore sailing. Learn how to choose materials and layer clothing whether you're going on a relaxing summer sailing vacation , an action-packed voyage in the autumn, or an adventure in icy waters .

Clothes hanging in the sun and drying on the deck of a fishing boat.

What do sailors wear on their feet?

First of all, they wear shoes with light soles that don't make smudges . The last thing you want to do before handing back your boat is scrubbing the deck on your knees. Footwear should be quick-drying or even waterproof . But definitely with a closed and adequately protected toe , because there are a surprising number of things you can stub your toe on when you're on a boat.

For summer sailing, canvas trainers  will suffice. Just test them at home beforehand to make sure they don't slip in the wet (the ultimate test is on a wet pedestrian crossing).

For a voyage in the spring and autumn , you'll appreciate some neoprene shoes/boots or even just a pair of wellies from home. These don't have to be made specifically for sailing.

For rough conditions , you'll want to get pro sailing boots that are waterproof and insulate. There are a number of manufacturers out there. For example, Dubarry, Chatham, Sperry and Musto, or Baltic and Crewsaver , which we mention in our article on life jackets .

Keep the sails and yourself safe in the sun

The sun not only takes a toll on your sails, but also on your skin. Count on the fact that the surrounding water reflects the sun's rays, even when you're hidden beneath a bimini. Wear a hat or headscarf  as much as possible to avoid sunstroke ruining your holiday. Sunglasses are practically mandatory for every crew member and we recommend you get a cord or strap to keep them firmly attached — they have a nasty habit of falling off or being blown out to sea. SPF 50 is a pretty safe bet if you use enough cream, reapply it throughout the day, and to all exposed areas. Prefer water-resistant products that protect you from both  UVB  and  UVA  rays (see the packaging for information). It's also a good idea to choose those labelled reef-safe or otherwise certified as free from substances that harm coral reefs and aquatic life (you want to make sure you have something left to discover next season while snorkelling).

YACHTING.COM TIP: Avoid spray-on sunscreens. The wind will blow them all over the place and they can leave stains on the deck. You really don't want to lose part of your security deposit over something as silly as that. No matter what, we always recommend taking out deposit insurance anyway — it will save you money and give you peace of mind.

Bungees cords, ziplock bags and other items

We've devoted an entire article to the gear experienced sailors take on board. Here are a few more tips:

  • Don't splash out on expensive waterproof cases and backpacks. Ziplock bags work just as well and come in both document and laptop sizes.
  • No more tripping over shoes. Wrap a bungee cord around the seat, line or wherever you can, and simply slide your shoes under it.
  • A magic cleaning sponge from the drugstore removes marks from upholstery, whether you or a previous crew made it.
  • You won't have to wear it around the harbour, but on board a bum bag is invaluable for storing your smartphone, snacks and water bottle. You won't forget to drink (which actually happens a lot) or have to head below deck whilst heeling.
  • A Bluetooth speaker will play your tunes on deck while your smartphone remains safely in the cabin. Fancy a soundtrack to your voyage? Simply secure the speaker with a bungee cord.
YACHTING.COM TIP: If you want to know more. For example, what documents should you have, or how much food or money to take? Read our complete guide —  Sailing essentials: don't forget to pack these things .

What to Wear for Sailing: The Perfect Outfit

Royal Yachts Miami

Royal Yachts Miami

Sailing along the picturesque coastline of with a yacht rental in Miami is an experience like no other. As you embark on your yacht rental adventure, it's essential to dress appropriately for both comfort and style. Whether you're an experienced sailor or a first-time adventurer, here's a guide to the perfect outfit for your sailing trip in Miami.

1. Comfortable and Breathable Clothing

When it comes to sailing, comfort should be your top priority. Opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, or moisture-wicking materials. A comfortable t-shirt or a loose-fitting blouse paired with shorts or capris is an excellent choice for warm weather sailing in Miami. Remember, you might encounter splashes of seawater, so quick-drying clothes are a bonus.

2. Sun Protection

Protecting yourself from the sun is crucial when spending extended hours on a boat. Wear a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face and neck from direct sunlight. Sunglasses with UV protection are a must to safeguard your eyes. Don't forget to apply a generous amount of sunscreen with a high SPF rating to exposed areas of your skin.

3. Windproof Layer

Even on warm days, the sea breeze can get chilly, especially during early mornings or late afternoons. Bring a lightweight, windproof layer like a zip-up jacket or a light cardigan to stay warm and cozy while sailing. This will ensure you're prepared for any changes in weather conditions.

4. Non-Slip Footwear

Proper footwear is essential for your safety on a boat. Opt for closed-toe, non-slip shoes that provide good traction on a wet deck. Boat shoes or deck sneakers are ideal choices as they offer a combination of comfort and functionality.

5. Layering Options

Miami's weather can be unpredictable, and temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day. Consider packing a few lightweight, versatile layers that you can easily add or remove as needed. A light scarf or a long-sleeved shirt can come in handy when the sun goes down or when you encounter a sudden temperature drop.

6. Water-Friendly Accessories

Keep in mind that sailing often involves getting wet, either from seawater splashes or from engaging in water activities. Leave your precious jewelry and valuables on land and opt for water-friendly accessories like waterproof watches and simple bracelets.

7. Tote Bag or Backpack

Bring a tote bag or a backpack to carry your essentials, such as sunscreen, water bottle, snacks, and a small towel. Having a convenient bag will ensure you have everything you need within reach without cluttering the deck.

By following these tips and packing the perfect outfit, you'll be ready to embark on an unforgettable sailing experience during your private yacht charter in Miami . Remember to prioritize comfort, sun protection, and practicality while also embracing the stylish and relaxed vibe that comes with sailing along the Miami coastline.

Royal Cruising Club: Treasure Trove

  • Ben Lowings
  • February 1, 2022

Ben Lowings delves into the journals of the Royal Cruising Club to discover how yachting has changed over the decades

Ben Lowings pores over the Royal Cruising Club journals and shares stories from sailing’s early pioneers

The Ria de Arousa on the Atlantic coast of Spain is a great fjord where the woodland comes down to the shore. Its rocky inlets and islands provide intricate pilotage today.

In the summer of 1882 a lieutenant, one H. Bremner of HMS Hercules , was sailing his small canoe in this area.

He flew a burgee now renowned as a badge of the owner’s deep-sea knowledge and ‘foreign-going’.

It was white and red, divided vertically. The white inner portion was charged with a black Maltese cross, edged with yellow, and bearing a yellow naval crown at its centre.

This is the flag of the Cruising Club – or as it later became, the Royal Cruising Club (RCC).

Bremner was conducting the club’s first cruise in foreign waters. Spain was at peace, but the club history notes that he was ‘prudently armed with a revolver.’

Bremner had signed up to an exclusive outfit founded for the purposes of pleasure sailing. But its original members had something of the buccaneer about them.

To quote the original 1890 Articles, the club was to associate ‘owners of small yachts, boats, and canoes, and other persons interested in aquatic amusements, and to give members facilities for obtaining information as to the harbours and other local matters, and to circulate amongst its members accounts of interesting cruises.’

The Wolverhampton-born solicitor Arthur Underhill was the inspiration behind it.

Tired of editing legal texts, he was instrumental in a deal with Hunt’s Yachting Magazine to publish cruising logs. Hunt’s goes back to 1852.

It carried all the news from the yacht clubs which then existed – essentially the big racing ones.

In those days it was as much about river and lake cruising as offshore. This was the world of Jerome K Jerome’s 1889 book Three Men in a Boat ( To Say Nothing of the Dog ) and Robert Louis Stevenson’s An Inland Voyage (an 1878 paddling canoe trip in the Low Countries).

Opening up cruising

These early periodicals catalogue the delights of Victorian sportsmen (no women, note).

Sandwiched between the pale blue paper covers are tales from Underhill’s forays in his 46-ton auxiliary ketch Wulfruna .

A regatta in Japanese waters was one such delight.

Today the chartlets in the Imray /Royal Cruising Club Pilotage Foundation pilot books are invaluable; they can trace their origin in part to the Cruising Club charts of 1893.

The atlas, Thames Estuary and Adjacent Harbours contains only the soundings in single-digit fathoms.

The chart designers believed these depths were the only ones that a yacht of several tons and corresponding draught would be interested in.

The Thames book was followed in 1894 by a comprehensive atlas covering Ramsgate to Scilly.

Today, these materials can be found in the Royal Cruising Club’s current club rooms, housed within the Royal Thames Yacht Club at Knightsbridge in central London.

The colourful library is immaculate.

The club’s honorary archivist, Christopher Thornhill, was brimming with pride. ‘The production of such charts was a big landmark in the cruising world,’ he says.

By 1902, they covered up from the Scillies to the Mull of Kintyre.

Sutton Hoo ship: To sail or not to sail

82 years after the ghostly remains of the Sutton Hoo ship were discovered the debate still rages - was the…

They ‘revolutionised sailing,’ Thornhill adds. ‘You couldn’t have them unless you were a member.’

There was an early attempt to add the ‘royal’ title to the club name. But an approach to the Prince of Wales was decided against, because the club didn’t know whether he was likely to accept.

Enthroned as Edward VII, he approved the name change in 1902.

‘His Majesty was pleased to command that in future the style of the club should be The Royal Cruising Club, and the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty granted a warrant to fly the blue ensign of His Majesty’s fleet.’

It was a far more controversial royal figure who had taken a much closer interest.

In 1905, a batch of Royal Cruising Club charts were dispatched to Germany. The recipient declared he had ‘already quite enough of them.’

Kaiser Wilhelm II gave his club a signed portrait, which hung for a time behind the Royal Cruising Club rooms’ entrance door.

This grandson of Queen Victoria, it could be argued, was so desperately interested in the British yachting scene because he was so envious of it.

He was in the Royal Cruising Club at the same time as he furiously directed Germany’s naval build-up. He also encouraged German yachtsmen to spy on British shore defences.

One of them, who counted the gun emplacements at Brighton, dodged a bit of trouble because he was a Royal Cruising Club member.

German intelligence gathering was of course the subject of the 1903 novel The Riddle of the Sands , penned by Erskine, himself naturally a Royal Cruising Club chap.

Sailor Skip Novak helming a yacht

High-latitude adventures are still a core part of the Royal Cruising Club, with Skip Novak recently becoming a member

The Kaiser’s portrait has been replaced by that of H.W. Tilman. This alone gives you an idea of the huge changes in yacht cruising.

The Victorian plutocrat in a steam yacht with paid hands was – over the course of 100 years – transformed into the rugged ex-military adventurer sailing polar seas in search of remote mountains to climb.

From Hunt’s to the Cruising Club Journal to the Royal Cruising Club Journal , you sense that the Royal Cruising Club is in many ways writing history’s first draft.

The Royal Cruising Club version of history is the one that seems to matter.

Christopher Thornhill has trouble remembering the name and nationality of America’s Joshua Slocum, the first lone circumnavigator.

Thornhill, now 81, can be forgiven for a name having slipped his mind. The name he is arguably more interested in is that of the Royal Cruising Club’s George Henry Pasche Muhlhauser, the first English yachtsman to sail around the world.

‘He just went with a hand and one other chap.’ Muhlhauser started in 1919 with his 54ft yawl. He died soon after his return three years later, but not without having written Cruise of the Amaryllis , which Thornhill calls a seminal book on his exploits.

Old edition of Arthur Ransome's children's books

Arthur Ransome’s inspirational children’s books, as well as his cruising logs, are an important part of the Royal Cruising Club library. Credit: Jessica Vidal

It seems harsh but it is probably true to say Muhlhauser is all but completely forgotten by today’s yachting community.

His polished hardwood desk – the same one which carried his charts – sits in the club room.

One would probably expect to hear that the First World War changed cruising forever, but Thornhill argues that reading the logs from 1914-19, ‘you wouldn’t even think there had been a war.’ the pioneers Erskine Childers was followed by another writer, and sometime intelligence operative, into the Royal Cruising Club annals.

Arthur Ransome’s tales of Baltic escapades with his Russian wife off the Estonian coast in Racundra are an essential chunk of the Royal Cruising Club library bookshelves.

The children’s fiction he is best remembered for also occupies a readily accessible area in the library.

Tracking the changes between the wars, it is easy to see cruises becoming longer and more involved.

More and more words are spilt and the Royal Cruising Club’s volumes become thicker.

The 1939 journal – published in 1940 – is, as Thornhill says, ‘very fat’.

The Second World War was a genuine pause in Royal Cruising Club activity.

Its journal resumes in 1947, when paid hands were no more, and cruisers encountered all sorts of problems which had to be solved by ingenuity rather than money.

One visitor to Spain, says Thornhill, had a ‘hell of a job getting petrol’.

Small yachts were becoming more seaworthy and ‘real ocean cruising’ was much more feasible. Sailing was opening up to different people in different sectors of society.

Peter and Anne Pye, Eric and Susan Hiscock, Hammond Innes, Blondie Hasler and Adlard Coles all tell their stories in the pages of the Royal Cruising Club journals.

So too the New Zealander, Dr David Lewis, and a fellow Southern Ocean venturer, Brigadier Miles Smeeton .

His much-anthologised account of a pitchpole near Cape Horn in 1957 tells how his wife Beryl was nearly swept to her death: ‘Beryl looked astern and saw an exceptional wave coming up very high and steep. Tzu Hang was dead stern on to it. She did not see how Tzu Hang could surmount it. It did not appear to be breaking or about to break, but it was the height and the steepness that made a lasting impression on her mind. The next thing that she knew was that she was being thrown head first out of the cockpit, thrown out and not washed out, and then she knew no more until she found herself in the water, the snap hook of her bodyline providentially broken, and with Tzu Hang lying, swept clean and dismasted, 30 yards away.’

Ben Lowings

Ben Lowings works for the BBC World Service and has sailed dinghies and yachts from the Norwegian Arctic to New Zealand. He also skippers commercial yacht deliveries around Britain. He has written two books, The Chancellor , a biography of the yachtsman George Millar, and The Dolphin , a biography of Dr David Lewis.

These close calls embody the adventurous spirit of Tilman’s Royal Cruising Club. It still lives.

One recent recruit, Skip Novak, through his voyages in Pelagic Australis , has sparked the dreams of many of us who yearn for high-latitude voyages.

The honorary archivist himself is also a good example. Thornhill’s 40ft teak Sparkman and Stephens yawl Sai See probed northern Europe from the Baltic to Iceland.

He wrote pilotage notes for the Faroe Islands, which are incorporated into the Royal Cruising Club Pilotage Foundation’s Arctic Waters pilot.

Sailing in the polar regions is perhaps an old-fashioned idea but the Royal Cruising Club thinks it an activity still worth pursuing.

Thornhill, for his part, deeply regrets the advent of GPS in the 1990s, along with most other boat electronics.

In 1991, Thornhill sailed with his godson from Shetland to the Lofoten Islands in Norway and taught him to use a sextant.

He smiles as he tells me his erstwhile pupil has since sailed himself around the world. With an AIS receiver, a GPS set and chartplotter , Thornhill argues, navigation is ‘pretty easy to do’.

You might as well ‘be sitting in your bedroom’, he adds.

Whatever you think of that opinion, the writings of Royal Cruising Club members can certainly take you sailing from your bedroom.

The Royal Cruising Club journals – containing 3,000 articles – are searchable by cruising area and accounts of the previous year’s trips are available for £20.

Dive in. They provide great perspectives on the history of cruising that have stood the test of time.

How modern monarchs are keeping the sailing tradition alive

For centuries, yachting has been a beloved pastime of monarchs. As Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her Platinum Jubilee after 70 years on the throne, Keith Dovkants discovers how today’s royals are carrying on this noble tradition.

In a jaunty Breton-style top and with a confident grip on the helm, the Duchess of Cambridge made a favourable impression on a sailing outing in New Zealand a while back. She match raced her husband on America’s Cup yachts around the cans in Auckland Harbour – and won. Twice. It was a light-hearted foray during an official visit in 2014 and many a sailor was cheered to see a front-line royal clearly enjoying herself on a sailboat. The Duchess, who was a keen sailor as a youngster, went on to make another high-profile appearance on a Land Rover BAR America’s Cup catamaran and became patron of the 1851 Trust, a charity dedicated to getting young people into boats and maritime industries. “I hope we can engage and inspire a new generation into sailing,” she said.

Her enthusiasm gives a timely stimulus to the long-standing love affair between European royal families and yachting.

Britain’s royals were once the standard bearers of a tradition that stretches back centuries. The Prince Regent, later George IV, joined the Yacht Club – now the Royal Yacht Squadron – in 1817 and was a keen visitor at the annual Cowes regatta. Edward VII watched the first America’s Cup race as a child in 1851 and had a passion for sailing. As Prince of Wales he owned a succession of cutters, then in 1893 ordered what was to become perhaps the most famous racing yacht of all time – Britannia .

No other boat defines royal yachting like Britannia . She was designed by the maestro GL Watson and built on the River Clyde in Scotland from wooden planking on steel frames. She measured 36.8 metres overall, with a mast that soared 43 metres above the deck. With all sails flying, her canvas spread to 959 square metres. She had a luxurious saloon and four sleeping cabins with a full-size bathroom. Decoration included tapestries and cretonnes. The crew of around 20 men occupied the forecastle, sleeping on folding cots and hammocks.

Britannia was magnificent, the queen of the Big Class, and won again and again. But she famously lost to the newer and bigger Meteor II , also designed by Watson and owned by another royal, Kaiser Willhelm II, Emperor of Germany and King of Prussia. The Kaiser was fiercely competitive, prompting his British uncle to complain: “Sailing used to be a pleasant relaxation for me. Since the Kaiser took command, it is a vexation.” In fact, he put the beloved Britannia up for sale in 1897 but repurchased her in 1899 and cruised her until his death in 1910.

In the hands of Edward’s son, George V, Britannia dominated the Big Class racing circuit again in the 1920s and was still racing in the early 1930s after modifications to sail with the J Class. The King hoped his son and heir, the future Edward VIII, would keep up the family tradition. This was not to be. The new Prince of Wales’s sporting interests lay elsewhere, as history records.

When George V died in January 1936 and no other family member stepped up to take the yacht, Britannia ’s fittings were stripped and sold for charity. The hull was towed south of the Isle of Wight by HMS Winchester and sunk with explosive charges, in accordance with the late king’s will.

Yachting was slow to recover after the Second World War, but in July 1947 Buckingham Palace announced the engagement of Princess Elizabeth to a young navy man who was mad about boats. Members of the Island Sailing Club in Cowes on the Isle of Wight bought a Dragon Class yacht for the couple as a wedding present. The Duke of Edinburgh fell upon the gift with an enthusiasm that gratified not only the ISC, but sailors everywhere. Suddenly, after the dark days of the war, their passion was being shared by one of the most glamorous and charismatic members of the royal family.

The Duke called his new boat Bluebottle . At Cowes he would happily pose for press pictures with the new boat if the photographers would keep out of his way on the water. But this, to his great annoyance, was to change.

He was still a serving naval officer and Princess Elizabeth had royal duties, so time for sailing was short. The future queen made one brief outing on Bluebottle , but mostly the boat was sailed by a sailing master and the Duke. Around this time he struck up a friendship with Uffa Fox, designer of the Flying Fifteen and other famous boats. “Uffa was a genius with a sailing boat,” the Duke later wrote. The people of Cowes presented him with a Flying Fifteen designed by Fox that he named Coweslip . She was kept at Fox’s yard and when the Royal Yacht Britannia became a regular visitor to Cowes Week, the Duke would take a launch from the ship straight to Coweslip ’s mooring.

Then came Bloodhound . Built in 1936, this 19 metre yawl was bought by the Duke and the Queen in 1962 and refitted for cruising and racing. Although the Queen sailed Bloodhound rarely, the yacht was very much part of the royal family’s life. The Duke raced her with Uffa Fox, and when Britannia took the family for their summer cruise around the Western Isles, Bloodhound went too. She was sailed by the Duke during the day with the royal children and their friends. Prince Charles was a keen sailor, but service in the Royal Navy seems to have cured any sea fever, although he did go through a windsurfing phase some years ago.

Even without a boat, the Duke of Edinburgh was a regular visitor to Cowes, notably as guest of the industrialist Owen Aisher on his Yeoman racing yachts during the 1980s and early 1990s.

But Britain’s royals were not the only ones keen on racing. Ex-King Constantine II of Greece commands immense respect. As a 20-year-old prince, he won a gold medal sailing in the Dragon Class at the 1960 Olympics. A regular at Cowes, he would often sail with the Duke of Edinburgh who, after all, is his cousin.

Constantine’s sister, now Queen Sofia of Spain, shared his passion for sailing and was a reserve in the gold medal-winning team. When she met the boat-mad future King of Spain, Juan Carlos, on a cruise around the Greek islands in 1954, they clicked instantly.

King Juan Carlos, who abdicated in favour of his son Felipe in 2014, was a Dragon Class competitor in the 1972 Olympics, although he didn’t win a medal. Juan Carlos and his son, who represented Spain in Solings in the 1992 Olympics, were keen competitors aboard Bribón , their very quick Judel/ Vrolijk TP52, placing second in the Med Cup and winning the Copa Del Rey in 2011. After his abdication, Juan Carlos sold the boat and now helms his classic Six Metre. In fact, during September 2017, at the age of 79, he and his crew aboard the Six Metre Bribón Gallant won the Classic Division for boats built before 1965 at the 6M Worlds in Vancouver, Canada.

Another Dragon aficionado was Constantine’s brother-in-law, Prince Henrik of Denmark, who died in February 2018 aged 83. He was a lifelong sailor and honorary chairman of the Royal Danish Yacht Club for 44 years. He owned six Dragons and sailed his last race aged 78. His son, Crown Prince Frederick, is also a keen sailor and he and his wife Princess Mary boarded the 30 metre super Maxi Wild Oats last December before a Christmas holiday in Tasmania, where the Princess was born. The Hobart-born royal beat her husband 2-1 in a match race back in 2005 after he contested the world Farr 40 championships off Sydney Heads.

Scandi royals adore sailing and none more than King Harald of Norway. A three-time Olympian, the grandfather of six – now aged 81 – still sails his beloved eight metre Sira , which his father King Olav V had built in the 1930s.

“I’ve raced all my life,” King Harald said after a race in Canada two years ago. “You can’t stop playing, you know.” The King taught his children to sail and daughter Princess Martha Louise recalled in a recent biography that her father would undergo a “personality change” as an instructor. “He would… start shouting and shrieking and giving orders, just a completely different Harald,” she said.

His son Crown Prince Haakon and his wife Princess Matte-Marit both sail, but the Prince says he suspects his father may be disappointed he did not pursue the sport with the same passion.

When the Royal Yachting Association celebrated the 50th birthday of its magazine, Princess Anne, its president, wrote a letter of congratulation, calling herself “a fellow sailor”. She certainly is – Anne and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, keep a Rustler 44, Ballochbuie , at Ardfern in Scotland and aim to cruise, sometimes as far as the Hebrides, at least twice a year. The Princess describes her role as “foredeck hand” – the boat has electric winches, in-mast furling and a bow thruster for ease of handling. At 13 metres, Ballochbuie (named after ancient woodland on the Balmoral estate), is a good size for a cruising couple.

On the Côte d Azur, where Britannia and the rest of the Big Class used to race every summer, Pierre Casiraghi , son of Princess Caroline of Monaco, is a highly competitive sailor, with Sydney-Hobart and Fastnet races under his belt. He skippers the Malizia racing team, and when he’s not competing offshore, he sails a high-speed foiling cat. Casiraghi also sponsors Sail for a Cause, a charity that supports humanitarian projects, including medical care for children. His uncle, Prince Albert II, Monaco’s ruler, owns Tuiga , a 23 metre Fife gaff cutter considered among the most beautiful of vintage yachts. Tuiga , sometimes with Prince Albert at the helm, is a regular on the classic regatta circuit, and at home is used to give youngsters sail training at the Yacht Club de Monaco.

German Frers Bridging generations

A great number of the yachts designed by German Frers have been known to cross the start line in leading international events. A celebrated naval architect, he has designed more than 1,300 yachts. For more than half a century, he has been at the forefront of technological progress in the yachting industry and supported several generations of sailors. The Argentinian has left his mark on cruising, regatta racing and ocean racing. He started out in the 1980s by designing some of the fastest and most modern Maxis of the time ( Matador , Il Moro di Venezia II , Cannonball and Flyer II ). Frers also collaborated with the highly regarded Nautor Swan boatyard. Many of his yachts have competed in international races partnered by Rolex. In 2021, the designer unveiled Recluta , a replica of a boat that his father, also a naval architect, had designed 80 years earlier. The 20-metre ketch was shown at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, the home par excellence of yachting tradition and its continuation.

Exclusive: Elaine Bunting is invited aboard Princess Anne’s royal yacht in a remote harbour in Scotland

  • Elaine Bunting
  • December 6, 2014

Elaine Bunting heads for a rendezvous in Ardfern, a tiny hamlet on Loch Craignish on the west coast of Scotland, to meet up with the Princess Royal and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence aboard their private yacht

yachting time royal sailing kleidung

As in any good intrigue, the rendezvous was remote and the instructions brief: wait at the chandlery at Ardfern Yacht Centre, inside if wet, outside if dry. Here I would be met by Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, or a policeman.

Ardfern is a tiny, remote hamlet on Loch Craignish on the west coast of Scotland, set in a wild landscape of raw splendour. It is where the Vice Admiral and Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal keep their Rustler 44, Ballochbuie , and where I was invited to meet them, an event unheard of in their 21 years of sailing here.

Strictly speaking, a rendezvous is unnecessary in Ardfern. “Ah, you’ll be the journalist and the photographer,” a local man observed the minute we arrived. The plainclothes policemen stood out as conspicuously as we did. Villagers appeared oblivious, but being a member of the Royal Family is like having in-built AIS. “They are on board with the rigger”, “They’ve gone up for a coffee at the Crafty Kitchen.”

Sir Tim’s impending arrival was duly noted and pointed out before we met. After introductions he led me and photographer Paul Wyeth down to where Ballochbuie was berthed. As we walked down the pontoon, he chatted cordially about the Dorus Mor, the fierce tidal gate at the entrance to Loch Craignish that he and the Princess were intending to pass later that day at the start of a week’s cruise among the islands.

Sir Tim and Princess Anne are mad keen sailors and loyal Rustler owners. Their previous boat was a Rustler 36, Blue Doublet , which they kept in Ardfern for 20 years and sailed every summer. Ballochbuie was launched in 2012 from Rustler’s family-owned yard in Falmouth. That year was a busy one as Princess Anne is president of the British Olympic Committee and was a member of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games, but when it was over they sailed their new yacht north. “It was our wind-down after the Olympics,” says Sir Tim.

HRH Princess Royal,Scotland

In any year, free time is scarce. Princess Anne is famously hard-working, with an oppressive-sounding timetable of public duties: over 600 engagements a year, often three a day. Sailing holidays have, however, been sacrosanct, usually a week in early summer and perhaps two weeks later in the year when they explore further north or to the Outer Hebrides. Click here to see some of their favourite places in Scotland .

“It’s always been a bit of a negotiation. We decided a long time ago to do it in blocks and therefore it was worth keeping the boat somewhere it was nice to sail. It was much more sensible to pick a time slot to get away and keep it in Scotland, but we can only do that twice a year to any real extent,” says Princess Anne.

Their sailing sounds very traditional. Blue Doublet had few modern luxuries, not even an electronic chartplotter, and was anything but palatial. Sir Tim says he wasn’t able to stand up below and this was one of the reasons they began to think about a larger boat. “We wanted a bit more space,” he explains. “It was getting more difficult to live in,” agrees Princess Anne.

“There are lots of 44ft size boats and we had a great choice. We were hugely impressed with the build standards of Rustler,” says Sir Tim. “They are built to look after their occupants. They’re solid and they’re safe.

HRH Princess Royal,Scotland

Princess Anne’s Rustler 36 Ballochbuie

“We looked originally at the Rustler 42, but then someone came along and had the same idea we had, which is when you are down below you can’t see out. He asked if they could make a version of the Rustler 42 that was high enough up so that you could see out and this ended up being the Rustler 44. It’s ideally suited to the west coast of Scotland: when it’s cold or blowing hard and difficult to sit out you can still enjoy the beautiful views and watch the sunsets or the otters swimming past from the upper saloon. This boat seemed perfect for us and we’ve been very pleased with her.”

The extra size of the new yacht has taken some getting used to. “Having a bit more power and, for me, I’d never sailed with anything other than a tiller, so learning to sail with a wheel was really quite difficult – I was never very good with a wheel,” says Princess Anne. “With a wheel it’s much more difficult to find where that balance is. So it was quite a steep learning curve before I thought: ‘That’s OK, we’ve got to have a wheel’.”

The other big decision, they say, was about whether or not to have in-mast furling. Blue Doublet was slab reefed. They chose a furling mainsail system but, says Princess Anne: “There was a very long debate on that. And the jury is still out.”

They also opted for a cutter rig. “We had a cutter rig on Blue Doublet as well, but because it wasn’t designed like that it didn’t work as well as we would have liked,” says Sir Tim.

“You couldn’t use them together; tacking was tricky,” says Princess Anne. “But this is designed to be a cutter rig and sails nicely. We are still finding our way with the boat and we have sailed with it cutter-rigged several times and we managed OK, though we’ve got to practise a bit more.”

Their new boat has electric winches, which Princess Anne says is: “a trade off with having bigger sails. They give you a bit more scope to control, and we thought we might be running out of puff,” she laughs.

“The other modern device we’ve allowed ourselves is a bow thruster, which certainly makes my life a bit easier,” says Sir Tim. “Put it this way: when we arrived at the boat she was facing bows in and we knew that the wind would be blowing in so we took her out, spun her round and backed her in which, with a bow thruster, was no problem at all.”

So who does which jobs aboard the boat?

“I’m the foredeck hand, if that’s what you mean,” laughs Princess Anne.

HRH Princess Royal,Scotland

Ballochbuie

The name of the yacht, Ballochbuie , that has woodland associations. “It’s the name of a piece of ancient Caledonian forest on the west end of the Balmoral estate, which we’ve always loved,” explains Sir Tim. “It’s a beautiful part of Scotland and it just seemed like a very nice link between a boat that we love and a piece of Scotland we love.”
