Wooden Boat 3D Model
It’s a 3D boat model I’ve done for my personal Unreal Engine 5 project. Modelling is done in Blender, then sculpting in ZBrush, and at the end texturing in Substance Painter. I left some extra geometry at the back of the boat (concave rectangular shapes) because it will be the most visible side in the final project but in the end, baked details look so good that I would delete that geometry next time. The shape was based on the Chokkibune Boat design ( http://www.douglasbrooksboatbuilding.com/chokkibune.html ), but I opted for darker wood and added some decorations on the sides.

Building a 3D Sailboat
Our designer, Jon Deck, was so impressed with George’s sailboat that he set out to make one himself. Jon used redwood for the hull and poplar for the sails.
Use shaping techniques and dowels to create this impressive wooden boat
This 3D sailboat makes a spectacular centerpiece for your mantel. It is a perfect gift for the special sailor in your life. I have crafted two sailboats and four clipper ships as gifts for family members. While you don’t normally think of wood when you envision billowing sails, careful shaping can create a dramatic effect.
This is not a beginner project and will require an investment of your time. I use several tools the average scroll sawyer may not have, such as a woodcarving disc in an angle grinder and a band saw. In nearly every case, you can use a different tool to achieve the same result, but it may take a bit longer.
See Summer 2009 Issue #35 for full step-by-step instructions for completing this project.
***Correction: In Step 1, use three ¾” x 4″ x 22″ pieces of wood not three 1 ¼” x 4″ x 22″ pieces of wood.

Researchers develop 3D-printed wood from its own natural components
by Marcy de Luna, Rice University
Researchers at Rice University have unlocked the potential to use 3D printing to make sustainable wood structures, offering a greener alternative to traditional manufacturing methods.
Wood has historically been marred by wasteful practices generated during shaping processes, driving up costs and environmental impact. Now, researchers in materials science and nanoengineering at Rice have developed an additive-free, water-based ink made of lignin and cellulose, the fundamental building blocks of wood . The ink can be used to produce architecturally intricate wood structures via a 3D printing technique known as direct ink writing.
The work was recently published in the journal Science Advances .
"The ability to create a wood structure directly from its own natural components sets the stage for a more eco-friendly and innovative future," said Muhammad Rahman, an assistant research professor of materials science and nanoengineering at Rice. "It heralds a new era of sustainable 3D-printed wood construction."
The implications are far-reaching, potentially revolutionizing industries such as furniture and construction.
"Unlike previous attempts, this method exclusively uses nanoscale wood components for 3D printing, marking a significant advancement in the field," said Pulickel Ajayan, the Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor in Engineering and professor and chair of materials science and nanoengineering.
The university's research focused on optimizing the composition of the ink by adjusting the ratio of lignin, cellulose nanofibers, and nanocrystals while maintaining the natural lignin-cellulose balance, according to both M.S.H Thakur and Chen Shi, lead co-authors on the study.
Although lignin is one of the most abundant biopolymers on Earth, it is the least-valued product in industries, noted Amit Naskar, a project collaborator and senior research and development staff at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Post-printing, comprehensive analyses were conducted to assess the surface and internal structures of the 3D printed wood, comparing it to natural wood counterparts. The payoff not only exhibited close similarities to natural wood in texture but also in scent and strength.
Additionally, mechanical tests were performed to evaluate compressive and bending strengths, revealing promising results that surpassed those of natural balsa wood.

Five Canoes Discovered Northwest of Rome Are the Oldest Boats Ever Found in the Mediterranean
F or more than 30 years, one of Italy’s most well-hidden archaeological treasures has been an underwater village called La Marmotta.
The site, with well-preserved artifacts, was discovered in 1989 in a lake just northwest of Rome and 23 miles upstream from the Mediterranean Sea. Found among its wooden buildings were five canoes, stretching up to 32 feet long and made from hollowed-out trees. Estimated to be 7,000 years old, the boats showed signs of being equipped with advanced maritime technology, including towing accessories and reinforcements.
Because the original discovery of La Marmotta had only ever been published in the Italian language, widespread study of the canoes and their place in history remained limited. But now that a team of international researchers revisited the site and published their findings in English in the journal PLOS One , scientists around the world are learning about the boats for the first time—and the bustling, sophisticated Mediterranean trade they suggest.
"These artifacts offer further insights into the daily lives, symbolic and technological capabilities of the ancient inhabitants," says Niccolò Mazzucco , the study’s senior author and an archaeologist at the University of Pisa, to LiveScience’s Jennifer Nalewicki. "No other site in the Mediterranean presents such [an] amount of harvesting tools."
The five canoes are the oldest boats ever found in the Mediterranean, and among the ten oldest known in Europe. Radiocarbon dating placed their origins between 5700 and 5100 B.C.E., and an archaeobotanical study of the canoes showed they were each made from different materials—alder, poplar, oak, beech and lime tree wood—allowing for different weights, maneuverability and strength. This variety suggests different strategies and specialization among early Mediterranean villages, the researchers write.
One of the most exciting finds has been wooden T-shaped objects, drilled with two to four holes, that explain how the canoes were outfitted to carry large loads. These artifacts “are undoubtedly reminiscent of much more recent navigation systems,” the researchers write. The structure suggests the boats were towed using rope, allowing for the movement of goods, people and animals, likely for trade.
“So, these details are really important because they’re actually a testimony of how they could have transported a lot of goods,” Lasse Sørensen , an archaeologist at the National Museum of Denmark who was not involved in the study, tells Lesté-Lasserre.
Foreign grains, animal remains, pottery, paint, tools and figurines found at La Marmotta further suggest a vibrant ancient trade economy.
The canoes may also have been outfitted with sails, outriggers or support floats, the study suggests. Some of the smallest canoes were likely used for fishing trips. Both short- and long-distance travel would be possible, the researchers write. In 1998, a team built a reproduction of a canoe found at La Marmotta and sailed nearly 500 miles around the Mediterranean Sea. Covering 30 miles per day in good conditions, they estimated that the experienced seafaring villagers must have been able to cover much more ground.
The complex construction of the canoes and this evidence of sophisticated trade and travel, the researchers write, also demonstrate a level of social organization previously unconsidered of the area at that time.
“In this way, La Marmotta is causing a literal sea change in our view of those first Neolithic farming groups,” the team writes.
Dozens of Rohingya Muslim refugees rescued in Indonesia after night on capsized boat
An Indonesian search and rescue ship on Thursday located a capsized wooden boat that had been carrying dozens of Rohingya Muslim refugees and began pulling survivors who had been standing on its hull to safety.
An AP photographer aboard the rescue ship said 10 people had been taken aboard local fishing boats, and the Indonesian craft was saving another 59.
Men, women and children, weak and soaked from the night’s rain, wept as the rescue operation got underway, and people were taken aboard a rubber dinghy to the rescue boat.
It was unclear how many refugees were aboard the small craft when it capsized off Indonesia’s northernmost coast on Wednesday, with six survivors initially rescued by local fishermen estimated between 60 and 100 people.
It was unclear whether all managed to cling to the capsized craft overnight or whether some had drowned.
Indonesia’s search and rescue team only left Banda Aceh city in the evening on Wednesday, many hours after the boat capsized.
They initially had difficulty locating the boat in the choppy waters off the coast.
It finally found the boat and the survivors about midday on Thursday.
Amiruddin, a tribal fishing community leader in Aceh Barat district, said those rescued indicated that the boat was sailing east when it started leaking.
Then, strong currents pushed it toward the west of Aceh. The six said others were still trying to survive on the capsized craft.
About 740,000 Rohingya were resettled in Bangladesh to escape the brutal counterinsurgency campaign by security forces in their homeland of Myanmar .
Thousands have been trying to flee overcrowded camps in Bangladesh to neighboring countries, with Indonesia seeing a spike in refugee numbers since November, which prompted it to call on the international community for help.
Rohingya arriving in Aceh face some hostility from some fellow Muslims.
Indonesia, like Thailand and Malaysia, is not a signatory to the United Nations’ 1951 Refugee Convention outlining their legal protections, and so is not obligated to accept them. However, they have so far provided temporary shelter to refugees in distress.
Last year, nearly 4,500 Rohingya — two-thirds of them women and children — fled their homeland of Myanmar and the refugee camps in neighboring Bangladesh by boat, the United Nations refugee agency reported.
Of those, 569 died or went missing while crossing the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, the highest death toll since 2014.
Returning safely to Myanmar is virtually impossible because the military that attacked them overthrew Myanmar’s democratically elected government in 2021.
No country has offered them any large-scale resettlement opportunities.

MEULABOH, Indonesia (AP) — An Indonesian search and rescue ship on Thursday located a capsized wooden boat that had been carrying dozens of Rohingya Muslim refugees, and began pulling survivors who had been standing on its hull to safety.
An AP photographer aboard the rescue ship said 10 people had been taken aboard local fishing boats and another 59 were being saved by the Indonesian craft.
Men, women and children, weak and soaked from the night’s rain, wept as the rescue operation got underway and people were taken aboard a rubber dinghy to the rescue boat.
There were contradictory reports about whether anyone had died in the accident, with survivors saying many who had been aboard when the boat departed from Bangladesh were still unaccounted for, but authorities insisted everyone had been rescued.
“We have examined all 69 Rohingya that we rescued and from our examination, there was no information from them about any deaths,” Fathur, a rescue officer who gave only one name, told reporters. “We managed to evacuate all 69 people and no one stated that anyone had died.”

With the addition of six Rohingya who were rescued by private fishing boats that were at the scene well before authorities launched the official rescue mission, a total of 75 people from the boat were saved.
But Samira, a 17-year-old who was among the refugees from the Kutupalong camp in Bangladesh who had been traveling to Malaysia, said there had been 146 people on board, raising the prospect that 71 could still be missing at sea.
She said the boat began foundering three days ago and then capsized on Wednesday, adding that her nephew was among those unaccounted for.
“All of us are very sad,” she said. “We are very hungry and weak.”
When fishing vessels reached the scene on Wednesday, desperate refugees clamored aboard one of the boats, overloading it and causing it to also capsize. It was not immediately clear what happened to the crew on board.
After being informed about the refugees in need of help by the fishermen Wednesday morning, an official search and rescue team set off from Banda Aceh city on Wednesday evening. They didn’t reach the area of the accident until early in the morning and could not initially locate the capsized boat.
When they came upon it midday Thursday, they found the refugees on its hull, desperate for help.
They rescued 42 men, 18 women and nine children and took some to a temporary shelter in the Aceh Besar district and others to a local hospital for treatment.
Amiruddin, a tribal fishing community leader in Aceh Barat district, said those rescued indicated that the boat was sailing east when it started leaking and then strong currents pushed it toward the west of Aceh.
About 740,000 Rohingya fled earlier to Bangladesh to escape a brutal counterinsurgency campaign by security forces in their homeland of Myanmar.
Thousands have been trying to flee overcrowded camps in Bangladesh to neighboring countries, with Indonesia seeing a spike in refugee numbers since November which prompted it to call on the international community for help.
Returning safely to Myanmar is virtually impossible because the military that attacked them overthrew Myanmar’s democratically elected government in 2021 . No country has offered them any large-scale resettlement opportunities.

7,000-year-old canoes from Italy are the oldest ever found in the Mediterranean
The wooden vessels were likely used by Neolithic people for fishing and transport.
Five canoes found at the bottom of a lake in Italy were used more than 7,000 years ago for fishing and transport by people living in a Neolithic village near what is now Rome.
Archaeologists discovered the boats at La Marmotta, a prehistoric coastal settlement that is now underwater, while conducting ongoing excavations, according to a study published Wednesday (March 20) in the journal PLOS One .
The large dugout canoes — which were constructed of alder, oak, poplar and European beech — were built between 5700 and 5100 B.C., radiocarbon dating revealed.
The boats are the oldest ever found in the Mediterranean, according to a statement.
"One of the smallest [boats] was probably used for fishing," study co-author Mario Mineo , an archaeologist and director coordinator at the Museum of Civilization in Rome, told Live Science in an email. "The two largest measured almost 11 meters long by 1.2 m wide [36 feet by 4 feet] and it is probable that — thanks also to the easy access to the Tyrrhenian coast via the Arrone river — they could have been used for further trade."
The boat builders also used "advanced construction techniques" to craft the vessels. For example, they incorporated transverse reinforcements, which would have increased the durability of the canoes' hulls, according to the statement.

"The construction techniques and materials used indicate a sophisticated understanding of boat-building and navigation," senior study author Niccolò Mazzucco , a senior researcher in the Department of Civilizations and Forms of Knowledge at the University of Pisa in Italy, told Live Science in an email. "[This] is significant because it showcases the ingenuity and skill of ancient peoples in utilizing natural resources to create efficient means of transportation."
For example, the researchers think the vessels may have been equipped with "sails or outriggers," or parallel support floats, Mazzucco said. This can be evidenced by three T-shaped wooden objects found at the site near the canoes. Each of these items contained various holes, which were likely used to "fasten ropes tied to sails or other nautical elements," according to the statement.
"Such advancements suggest a deeper comprehension of maritime technology and navigation, with vessels equipped for long-distance voyages," Mazzucco added. "However, our current understanding falls short of precisely identifying the types of boats used, their construction methods and how components like canoes and T-shaped wooden objects were mounted together — whether through ropes, wooden pegs or other means."
The builders' ability to include multiple types of wood in their creations is also noteworthy, as it shows that they knew which "trees could be used to make the dugouts," Mazzucco said. "In contrast, at other [Neolithic] sites where more than one canoe has been found, the same [tree] species was usually used for all of them."

In addition to the boats, archaeologists found numerous artifacts scattered around the site, including flint and obsidian tools, pottery vessels, figurines and ornaments, according to the study.
In 2022, the researchers also found 52 wooden sickles at the site that were used for harvesting cereal grains.
"These artifacts offer further insights into the daily lives, symbolic and technological capabilities of the ancient inhabitants," Mazzucco said. "No other site in the Mediterranean presents such [an] amount of harvesting tools."
Editor's Note: This story was corrected at 11 a.m. EDT on March 22 to note that the canoes were found in a lake and not the Mediterranean Sea.

A wooden boat carrying dozens of Rohingya Muslim refugees capsizes off Indonesia's coast
BANDA ACEH, Indonesia — A wooden boat carrying dozens of Rohingya Muslims capsized off Indonesia’s northernmost coast on Wednesday, according to local fishermen who rescued six people. The survivors said more people were still on the boat.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The six, four women and two men, were moved to a temporary shelter in the Samatiga sub-district. The fishermen told The Associated Press the refugees’ boat capsized about 16 miles (25 Kilometers) from the coastline of Kuala Bubon Beach in Aceh province.
Amiruddin, a tribal fishing community leader in Aceh Barat district, said those rescued indicated that the boat was sailing east when it started leaking and then strong currents pushed it toward the west of Aceh. The six said others were still trying to survive on the capsized craft.
About 740,000 Rohingya were resettled in Bangladesh to escape the brutal counterinsurgency campaign by security forces in their homeland of Myanmar.
Thousands have been trying to flee overcrowded camps in Bangladesh to neighboring countries with Indonesia seeing a spike in refugee numbers since November which prompted it to call on the international community for help. Rohingya arriving in Aceh face some hostility from some fellow Muslims.
