Jetsetting with … Managing director of The Singapore Yacht Show Andy Treadwell

SINGAPORE — As managing director of the Singapore Yacht Show, Andy Treadwell knows his boats. From super yachts to small dinghies, he has seen and travelled on them all.

Managing director of the Singapore Yacht Show, Andy Treadwell, says a newbie to sea travel should opt for a trip around the region on a catamaran. Photo: The Singapore Yacht Show

Sonia Yeo Sijia

The 61-year-old makes it a point to take a trip on his own boat in Europe every chance he gets. His favourite place to take his family, which includes his wife and twin daughters, is Corfu in Greece.

“I’ve been everywhere, but the northeast coast of Corfu is the most beautiful. The sea, the scenery, the people there are wonderful and hospitable,” he said.

TODAY caught up with him to ask about where a newbie wanting to try out their sea legs might be able to go a-sailing around the region.

Q: If I am a newbie who wants to take an overnight yacht trip, what tips would you offer?

A: If you are just starting out, I would suggest you go on a catamaran because they are very stable and very comfortable. But your trip would depend entirely on your budget. If you have a few hundred thousand dollars to spare, I could fix you up for a couple of days on a superyacht. One of the best trips you can take around the region would be to go up the Andaman Sea through the Similan Islands, and up to the Mergui Peninsula in Myanmar. You will see unspoilt islands, beautiful dive spots and beaches that are totally unpopulated.

Q: Superyachts may be out of reach of most people, but we know that other water toys are available. Could you give us a few examples?

A: There are personal submarines that can take up to three people into the depths. Then there is stand-up paddle-boarding, which is the fastest-growing sport in the world at the moment. It is taking the place of windsurfing, for instance (because anyone can paddle-board). Also popular is the Seabob — a water-propelled engine that you hold onto in the water. You use it to cruise around, or it can even take you below the surface — you can dive with it.

Q: What do you hope to achieve with the Singapore Yacht Show?

A: We hope to get far more people from the Asian region into the world of boating and yachting, so they understand the fun and pleasure of yachting. To many here, the sea is associated with work — with fishing and for transport. Asians don’t enjoy the sun as much as Westerners do. Thus, when they travel on water, they do so on yachts, which provide good cover so you are not very exposed to the sun or the rain.

With the Yacht Show, we hope to grow the marketplace for the boating industry, as well as a demand for high-end tourism within Asia. Yacht tourism is important because it is associated with high spending power. It can help create the best sort of international public relations. If (Singapore becomes) a yachting destination or a yachting capital, it will draw the highest-spending tourists in the world. That is what I am trying to achieve for the region.

The Singapore Yacht Show begins on April 6 and runs until April 9. Visit www.singaporeyachtshow.com for more information.

Interview with Andy Treadwell – CEO Singapore Yacht Show

I spoke to Andy Treadwell well CEO of Singapore Yacht Show about the most important yacht and lifestyle fair in Asia. With almost 100 yachts and many glamorous parties, seminars etc., the event in Asia is also an important network instrument when it comes to luxury in Asia.

Kevin Underwood

Why is Singapore a good venue for a yacht show?

Andy Treadwell

After the financial crisis, and the immediate decline in „yachting consumption“ in the West, it became a major focus to establish a proper international yacht show in Asia that marketed both the yachting industry and the nautical lifestyle. The whole of the global industry was – and still is – looking to Asia for future growth and development. There is big potential in this region because of the amount of wealth being generated here by a relatively young generation of entrepreneurs, and the increasing appeal of yachting as a new leisure lifestyle industry to this more outward-going – as compared to their forefathers – community.

At the same time, in order to grow the yachting industry in the region, we knew we would have to get government interest and support. And the best way to do that was to focus initially on getting the superyachts from the Mediterranean coming to the destination part of the region – ASEAN. These big boats bring in the kind of economic impact and high-end, high-spending tourism that all governments want. So the ASEAN cruising region – from Myanmar and Thailand all the way down through Malaysia and the Indonesian archipelago to the Pacific – is where we need to focus, and Singapore is the capital city of Southeast Asia, right in the middle of all these fabulous cruising grounds.

Singapore is the perfect venue for the region’s main yacht show – it is a first-world financial and business h doub that’s transparent, with very reasonable tax, and it’s the epicenter of the ASEAN region as superyacht cruising destination. It also has the best infrastructure for a yacht show, and geographically speaking, is one of the most accessible parts of Asia for yachts when they sail down from the Mediterranean.

However, currently unfriendly legislation doesn’t allow foreign superyachts to come here. We are spending a lot of time trying to help change this, starting with Thailand, with whose highly proactive and positive government we have been working very closely over the past three years. We think we will see the result of all this very soon – they are willing and ready to change their regulations and allow foreign yacht charter. The next step will be to get the whole of the ASEAN region working together. Once we get a real charter industry happening here, then all the potential new buyers in China and elsewhere will come out of the woodwork – because we’ll have somewhere on their own back doorstep to show them the product, let them try it out.

Do you see a difference between the requirements of the various markets e.g. Asian, European, Americans or middle Eastern?

In terms of what product is suitable? Not really, although obviously there’s a big difference in cultures and climates – the Mediterranean, where there’s 150 years of history of yachting, is a very different place to the Middle East or Asia – and there is less propensity to go out in the hot and sticky midday sun here, so boating is less popular generally, and you need more shelter and aircon. Some brands can adapt their product to meet the market’s demands, customizing the boats to fit the customer’s requirements in Asia. There’s probably less interest in overnight cruising and more interest in having leisure rooms instead of cabins, so changing the cabins into entertainment rooms for karaoke, games or dining, is another .

In terms of what’s needed to develop the industry in Asia, and to a lesser extent in the Middle East, it’s just about understanding that we’re almost starting from scratch here. There really is no industry – very, very little, so we have to create the interest and introduce the lifestyle. Interest in all the sectors of the industry is growing in this region, but I believe the most important thing right now, for the top end of the market anyway, is yacht charter. No matter how wealthy people are, they are not going to go out and buy a big boat first-off without having sampled the lifestyle. If we can get foreign superyachts being allowed to charter in Thailand, then we immediately have a product for Asian buyers to try out, right in their own backyard. Generally speaking, it’s going to be a lot easier to get them to come to Thailand, say – the most popular tourism destination for Chinese holidaymakers – than it would be to get them to go to the Caribbean, or even the Med, to try it out for the first time.

What is your targeted profile of visitors for the Singapore Yacht Show?

Aside from yacht buyers and boating enthusiasts, we want to attract a wide demographic of people who love having fun, like lifestyle, and are perhaps seeking something new to enjoy – because yachting and boating, having fun on the water, is really for everyone, and accessible to all.

How long do you need to plan the Singapore yacht show?

Like any major international event, it takes a whole year. There are a lot of moving parts, and every year we need to expand and improve. Most importantly, we are constantly seeking sponsorship and more financial support – without this, the show can’t happen, the industry will never develop, and regional governments will not get the economic impact they could so easily get if only we had more resource and ability to go to market in places like China.

What is your personal preference in yachts? Motor or sailing?

Sailing is wonderful, and I’ve been lucky enough to do a fair bit on some very big boats in the Mediterranean when I was a bit younger. However, to be practical, these days I would have to side with 90% of the boating population and say that motor boating is much easier, quicker and more practical. They are two very different things, different sports, different lifestyles, and attract two very different types of people – although I’m one of those who loves both.

What to you hope to achieve with the Singapore Yacht Show?

On the one hand we are providing a marketing platform for the global yachting industry, and our primary goal is to promote the yachting lifestyle to new buyers. There are hardly any boats in the region as a whole, and everybody sees a huge untapped potential in Asia as a

new market. We are also a lobbying platform – we’re trying to persuade governments in the region to make changes to the taxation laws that are preventing the yachting industry from flourishing, a move that will bring about plenty of economic benefits when it surely comes. And at the same time, we are marketing ASEAN as a yachting destination to all the existing yacht owners in the West who have never been here – but would love to, if only the regulations were relaxed and the place made more welcoming to foreign yachts.

Andy Treadwell (Singapore Yacht Show): Thailand is the number one yachting destination in Asia

andy treadwell singapore yacht show

Mr Andy Treadwell, CEO and Founder at Singapore Yacht Events Pte Ltd and 3L Events (Thailand) Ltd, talks to TravelDailyNews Asia-Pacific about the trends of luxury yachting in Southeast Asia.

TravelDailyNews: In your opinion, what are the trends of luxury yachting in Southeast Asia?

Andy Treadwell: There is quite definitely increasing interest in luxury yachting amongst the increasingly wealthy Asian populace. People here are getting the bug, and beginning to realize what great fun it is, that it is a great way to spend leisure time with family and friends. But even more significant is the increasing interest in the region as a destination amongst the thousands of superyacht owners in the Mediterranean, and the tens of thousands of yacht tourists – yacht charter clients, most importantly. They are looking for somewhere new to go in the winter, and South East Asia really fits the bill .

TDN: Thailand’s Tourism strategy is to develop marine tourism; what should the Ministry of Tourism and Sports do in order to support and develop luxury yachting in Thailand?

A.T.: The Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MOTS) are really doing all they can – we’ve been working with them very closely for three years now, and I can tell you that they genuinely want to develop Thailand as the world’s third destination for the global fleet of superyachts, and the principal yachting hub for Asia. The most important sector of the industry for Thailand, in terms of the economic benefits it could bring virtually overnight to Thai communities and business owners, is superyacht tourism. So that’s why we’re focusing on that to begin with. At the moment, foreign-flagged superyachts are not able to charter in Thai waters, so they don’t come here. If they could charter, then I think that within a few years we would see a big change. That is specifically what we’ve been working on with the MOTS and with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), and I think it’s fair to say now that the whole government agrees that this project should go forward in principle. It’s just that it takes some time change regulations, or the way they are interpreted, and put in place the structures and processes that are needed to make them operational. We are working with the TMBA to get this over the line .

TDN: Regulations used to be quite strict regarding foreign flag yachts operating in Thailand’s waters. How are these regulations changing in order to be more flexible?

A.T.: The main issue revolves around the laws of cabotage, which protect local commercial shipping. Currently, if a foreign-flagged yacht wants to charter in Thai waters – that is, both embarking and disembarking paying guests in the country – then the owner has to temporarily import the vessel and pay VAT on its value. Given that the value of a major charter superyacht today can easily be $50 million or $100 million, clearly no owner would do that – they never have, and they never will. Furthermore, it’s not really a business – most superyachts operate at pretty big loss to the owner, and chartering is merely a way to mitigate the losses, to keep the boat running and the crew occupied. Neither does it compete with local business, because there aren’t any comparable superyachts.

Then again, when the vessel leaves the country at the end of the season, any VAT paid for the yacht to be temporarily imported would then have to be refunded – so there’s not much point. So we’re asking for this whole system to be reviewed and for Thailand’s Revenue Department to adopt instead the models used successfully in New Zealand and Fiji. Fingers crossed, the idea seems to now be accepted in principle, and the various authorities are working with the TMBA on finding a satisfactory technical solution.

TDN: Regarding more flexible regulations, will there be reciprocity with other countries?

A.T.: Well, I would hope so, eventually. The whole point of the ASEAN economic community is to simplify and harmonise regulations so as to facilitate and develop intercommunity trade, and tourism should be very high on the common agenda in such a beautiful yet relatively undeveloped region. We are hoping that some progress may be made in this regard at the Asia-Pacific superyacht conference on the 10th and 11th of April, immediately prior to the Singapore Yacht Show

TDN: How do you think local brokers and yachts owners will react to this?

A.T.: I think everybody would be over the moon if this happened, as everybody understands that the trickle-down effect on the whole of the industry – small boats and big boats alike – would be incredibly positive. Plus I think they would all be delighted that I would then stop banging on about it!

TDN: What is the position of Thailand in the international yachting industry?

A.T.: Without any shadow of a doubt, Thailand is the number one yachting destination in Asia, and given its geographical position and the beauty of all of its coastlines, will be the first to benefit from an influx of yachts from the Mediterranean. For a start, it’s the only cruising destination with any superyacht berths, so it’s got at least 3 or 4 years head start over the rest of Asia – probably more like 10 years.

TDN: What initiatives should Thailand take in order to improve its position?

A.T.: Once the boats start coming, there will have to be an upgrade in the quality of the infrastructure and the level of service. Obviously the massive influx of “zero-dollar” tourism over the last 10 or 20 years has left its mark, and if improvements are not made, demanding superyacht owners who are used to the standards of facilities in the Mediterranean will move on to other parts of the region. But that would be a bit down the road – right now I think people who are new to Asia would find Thailand every bit as beautiful as I still do, and would make do with any perceived shortcomings.

TDN: Do you think that the existing number marinas and the services they offer are adequate to accommodate luxury travelers and even attract more luxury yachts? What else need to be done regarding infrastructure and services for luxury travelers?

A.T.: Well, as I said above, Thailand has a head start over everywhere else, and to begin with yacht owners and crew are pretty good at counting their blessings and making do with what they get. When you say luxury yachts, I assume you mean the larger ones – there are two superyacht marinas already in Thailand with around 120 berths, so that’s pretty good – unique in the whole of the region. There’s some good marinas for smaller boats too, and a couple of new ones in the making. However, most definitely the standard of facilities, the attitude and the service in general would have to be adapted and upgraded to meet the expectations of these very high spending guests. But that would come over time, I’m sure.

The 2020 Singapore Yacht Show will be celebrating its 10th anniversary with its next edition at ONE15° Marina Sentosa Cove in Singapore  from 15th to 18th October.

The founding of the show

Founder and CEO of the Singapore Yacht Show, Andy Treadwell has been around boats for most of his life, however, it was only 10 years ago that it took on a business aspect when he became part-owner and organiser of the Superyacht Cup 2007, one of the world’s largest superyacht sailing regattas.

After Informa Plc. (the London-based publishing & events company) bought the Superyacht Cup from Andy Treadwell and his partners, he became the CEO of its Sports & Leisure Group which counted the Informa Yachts Group and the Monaco Yacht Show among its prestigious events.

In 2011 Andy and his team at IYG founded the Singapore Yacht Show as a sister event to the Monaco Yacht Show, as the Asian region was showing untapped potential as a market. Since buying the business back from Informa in 2012, he has been permanently based in Singapore, immersed in the Asian yachting market and its trends.

The inaugural edition of the Singapore Yacht Show took place in 2011 and consisted of only 12 yachts, half a tent and approximately 3,000 visitors, however, the quality of the information and prestigious names on show ensure d its success to become an established event.

The mission of SYS

The mission of the Singapore Yacht Show is to attract the global superyacht fleet to Thailand and Southeast Asia to make it the preferred winter destination for superyachts, and to act as an important market for buying and selling vessels. The show is also an entry point for wealthy people of all ages looking to learn more about the luxury lifestyle, with the goal of chartering or even owning a vessel.

Why Singapore?

Following the Global Financial Crisis in 2008, the main markets and charter grounds for the yachting industry – the US and Europe – were experiencing stagnation at the time, and the Asian region was a virtually untapped market. Even today, there are very few luxury yachts in Asia in comparison with the wealth of the region and the desire for luxury goods.

Singapore has three-to-four world-class marinas which offer first-class services in a luxury setting. Luxury yacht Owners and captains can use the hub as a place to restock supplies, refuel, complete maintenance or even buy and sell superyachts.

Singapore is one of the greatest business and financial hubs in the Far East and its location off the south of Malaysia , close to the Indonesian archipelago farther south and Thailand and Myanmar to the north places it central to some of the best and most popular luxury yacht charter grounds the region has to offer. Thailand, in particular, has been significantly developing its marinas and service for the luxury yachting industry in recent years, encouraging more luxury yacht charter by Asian-based Owners as well as visitors from as far afield as Europe. The region is an excellent alternative to the Caribbean & Bahamas as a winter vacation ground, and there is an abundance of dive sites unlike anywhere else on Earth for their biodiversity.

In 2016 the Thailand Yacht Show was launched in partnership with the Thai government, and this has synergised perfectly with the Singapore Yacht Show as the former is a hub for leisure and the latter a financial hub, drawing business connections from countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, China and Japan .

Singapore and Thailand Yacht Show join forces with Asia Rendezvous Events

In a joint statement issued today by Andy Treadwell, CEO of Verventia Pte Ltd, owner of the Singapore and Thailand Yacht Shows, and Gael and Olivier Burlot, owners of Asia RendezVous Pte Ltd organisers of the Phuket, Penang and Singapore RendezVous events, it was announced that the two companies have agreed to collaborate by jointly producing only one show in Thailand and one in Singapore – the destination hub and the business hub respectively for the yachting industry in South East Asia.

The move was precipitated by a request earlier in the year from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to gather the industry together in one major event in Thailand so as to demonstrate united support for the government’s yacht tourism initiative. In essence, after a three-year campaign spearheaded by the Thailand Yacht Show, the Thai government has agreed to change some of the prohibitive yachting regulations and allow foreign yachts to charter in Thai waters – effectively opening up the ASEAN cruising grounds to superyachts from overseas for the first time. This initiative is now in its final stages, with the Thai Marine Business Association (TMBA) working with the Ministries of Finance and Transport to work out a business model for collecting VAT on charter income, rather than on the value of the yacht itself.

At the same time, the yachting industry has been vocal for years that there should only be one boat show in each strategic location and has requested just such a “get together”. The two show organisers acknowledge that they have different yet complementary strengths and skill sets that, combined, will create bigger and better single events in each country. Similarly, with their joined-up resources and budgets, they will be able to activate an aggressive and far-reaching promotional plan that should draw many more potential buyers and charterers into the market.

The new Phuket event will be a straight joint venture between the two existing businesses, called the “Thailand Yacht Show & RendezVous”, and there will be an additional jointly-owned event alongside the current Singapore Yacht Show which will be called the “Singapore Yacht Show RendezVous.”

Andy Treadwell explained: “It’s a classic example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts, from every point of view. The TAT, our partners and main sponsor of the Thailand Yacht show, asked us to try to get everyone working together instead of competing and dividing the industry. The major industry players asked us to do exactly the same thing. Gael and Olivier have a great work ethic, an excellent region-wide digital and print media platform, and a direct line to the luxury lifestyle industries – which is a good complement to any kind of yacht show.”

Gael Burlot added: “We feel it’s a good time and a good place to get everyone working together – the luxury industries are coming out of a challenging period, and things are looking better and better, while the yachting industry should now be in a position to dramatically expand in the Asia-Pacific region. All our efforts over the last 15 years to promote the industry and educate a growing audience of prospects in Asia are paying off; so is the hard work Andy and his team have been doing with the regional governments to open up Asia to yacht tourism – an initiative we want to support and fully be part of. Exciting times ahead!”

The Thailand Yacht Show & Rendezvous will take place from 4th-7th January 2019, with the venue to be confirmed shortly in conjunction with the consensus of industry opinion. The Singapore Yacht Show Rendezvous will replace the current Luxury Pavilion at SYS 2019, which will run from 11th-14th April.

Monaco Yacht Show 2019 review: Andy Treadwell, founder of Singapore Yacht Show, discusses the impact of the world’s most extraordinary trade show on the industry

Monaco Yacht Show 2019

Andy Treadwell, shares with us his takeaways from the Monaco Yacht Show, and what he intends to do for the upcoming Singapore Yacht Show, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2020

Been there, done that. Name any of the world’s largest yacht shows – Cannes Yachting Festival, Monaco Yacht Show or Dusseldorf Boat Show – and Andy Treadwell , founder of the Singapore Yacht Show , can bet you he’s done it. Having recently returned from the largest and most exclusive yacht show in Monaco, Treadwell shares his insights that go beyond the glamorous parties, and what one can expect from the 10th anniversary of the Singapore Yacht Show in 2020.

Andy Treadwell, founder of Singapore Yacht Show

Monaco Yacht Show: It is a Big Deal

“In the same way that the Tis  – the massive, gleaming 365-ft (111.5m) superyacht that was the star of this year’s Monaco Yacht Show (MYS) – represents the absolute pinnacle of the leisure boating industry (I just renamed my secondhand 6.5m RIB to Tisn’t ), MYS represents the most extraordinary yacht shows, and perhaps even all trade shows in the world.

It’s quite a phenomenal event and one that every industry professional has to attend if they want to be seen keeping abreast with this world. It’s also brilliantly organised, reeking of success and sparing no expense every inch of the way, from the first entry point by the swimming pool to the end of the closing party on the top deck of Yacht Club de Monaco. Its seamless execution is hardly a surprise, though. The Show is fabulously profitable, and it’s no easy feat, given the core team has, by and large, stayed the same, organising it from the very beginning nearly 30 years ago.

Monaco Yacht Show

MYS is unique because it exclusively showcases superyachts larger than 40m in length , and is the only show in the world to do so. You can fit just over 120 yachts into Port Hercules, and once you’ve the superyacht supplies, services and ‘accessories’ packed into the equally massive marquees, there’s no room for anything else.

The show seems to take over the entire principality – the hotels, restaurants and even transportation system – everything and everyone comes together to make the greatest yacht show on the planet a success. In fact, perhaps only the legendary Monaco F1 Grand Prix comes close in terms of its global outreach, media success and economic impact.

It is a numbers game here. The average purchase price at MYS this year was €41 million (S$62.1 million), and this means that attendees are definitely in for a good time. The builders and brokers certainly know how to throw a party, and there are dozens going on every night.

Even if you are there to have a look (or are serious about having fun), there will be no shortage of invitations. A day pass costs €300 (S$450), and the hotels and restaurants charge like a wounded rhino – but it’s still worth a visit. At the end of the day, the show is a great way to see the latest developments in the industry, especially as a potential yacht owner. From the newest yacht toys and yacht premieres to state-of-the-art technical innovations and even satellite communications companies, you can expect the most prominent brands to be there.”

Hits at Monaco Yacht Show 2019

“You set some really high expectations prior to the show, and more often than not, the yachts on display do more than knock the socks off your feet. This year’s show wasn’t any different.

Tis, by Lurssen Yachts

Tis by Lürssen Yachts, Germany is the largest yacht ever to go on display at the Monaco Yacht Show. It comes with not one, but two helicopter pads, a 12-m swimming pool, a resort-inspired spa and spectacular staircases that are normally only seen in palaces.

Here comes the sun yacht, Amels

The 83-metre Here Comes The Sun was built in 2017 by Amels in Vlissingen, Netherlands and has six decks, a sauna, steam room and a self-playing grand piano. She is the flagship of Dutch yacht builder’s fleet, and is the largest Amels yacht built to date.

The 80-m Excellence was another head-turner – a futuristic-looking collaboration between Abeking & Rasmussen and Winch Design. She has a unique superstructure – the bridge and owner’s decks are surrounded by curved floor-to-ceiling mirrored glass on all sides. The largest panel is a staggering 6m in length, and the master suite boasts a 180-degree view. With her angular reverse bow, she reminds me of another iconic yacht that we’ve seen several times in Singapore over the last few years – A, a motor yacht designed by Philippe Starck and built by Blohm + Voss. It’s 119m in length and is said to cost around US$300 million (S$411 million) to build .

Feadship's Syzygy 818

And there’s my personal favourite of the show: Feadship’s Syzygy 818 , a 77-m beauty that was delivered just before the start of the show. Its name is quite special, Syzygy is an astrological term for a rare event in which three or more celestial bodies line up, such as a new moon or lunar eclipse. ‘818’ means prosperous in Chinese numerology, and it’s no coincidence that the owner’s birthday is on 18 August. I understand the owner intends to bring her to Asia in the not too distant future.”

Supporting Acts

“The rest of the yachting industry, from small sailboats to production yachts are taken care of at the Cannes Yachting Festival, which takes place two weeks before. And that’s really all the boating industry needs in Europe; the Dusseldorf Boat Show in Germany – an indoor boat show that takes place in January – is the third major show and is fairly interesting too. But its scope is much wider.

You’ll see watersports equipment, diving holidays and boating tourism deals, all of which are the stuff attendees will dream of, given that it’s winter. In the US, where half of the world’s superyachts are owned, but very few built; and where there is a massive small-boat industry that produces several thousand units each year, there are still only two main shows.

Dubai International Boat Show

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which is like Cannes and Monaco combined in terms of scale – the superyachts displayed are nowhere near the calibre of those in Monaco – takes place in October, and the Miami Yacht Show in February. Even in the Americas, there are only two major shows.

The Dubai International Boat Show show has suffered the last couple of years as Dubai Marina is under reconstruction, but it’ll get back up to speed it reopens in 2021. A show in the Middle East is important, its people make up a major client percentage. The number of yacht owners per head in the ultra high-net-worth population is double that of the US.”

Singapore Yacht Show 2020: Calmer Waters Ahead

Similarly, Asia needs its own show, even though one would be hard-pressed to call what we have an ‘industry’.

The Singapore Yacht Show was founded in 2011 as a sister event to the Monaco Yacht Show, when I was the CEO of Informa Yacht Group. It was created at the request of the industry, just after the financial crisis when everything had fallen off a cliff in Europe and the US, and everyone was looking for a new market. All eyes were beginning to focus on Asia.

Since the beginning, we’ve worked with the authorities to show the potential economic impact of the industry and country. A big step to overcome is the regulatory hurdle that currently prevents yacht owners and charterers from operating in the region.

Singapore Yacht Show

The potential in Asia, in terms of the number of ultra high-net-worth individiduals who can afford to charter and buy a superyacht, is as big as Europe or the US. There is currently a cultural indifference to leisure boating here, and it’s not difficult to see why given the inclement weather. But there’s an absolutely huge latent market here.

This region has world-class yachting destinations in abundance – the cruising grounds here are spectacular, virtually empty, and seemingly endless. And everyone who has explored them agrees.

We’ve seen an increasing number of regional yachting debuts and we’re confident that next year’s Singapore Yacht Show – its 10th edition – will welcome even more. Having new, quality products on display attracts buyers from all over Asia as it boosts the overall appeal of the Show. There are increased levels of interest, and I’m not just referring to visitors from Southeast Asia. We’ve guests coming from further afield, such as China, Taiwan, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Give them the opportunity to charter the superyachts – and ease them into the lifestyle that is rather smooth sailing – and a new market will be born.”

A spotlight on Singapore

What can the market expect to see at the upcoming singapore yacht show.

Image for article A spotlight on Singapore

Next week will see the seventh edition of the Singapore Yacht Show, which will be held at the ONE°15 Marina Club in Sentosa Cova from 6-9 April.

Andy Treadwell, CEO and founder of the company behind the event, speaks to SuperyachtNews ahead of the event and illustrates how much the show has matured since its inception: “When we first started back in 2011, we had about 11 or 12 boats lined up in the dock, half a tent and maybe two-or-three thousand visitors - but it was still a great show. Everyone was impressed with the quality of people. The interest was, and still is, here in Asia.”

With a record number of yachts appearing in the marina, including the 77m Silver Fast , built by Silver Yachts, the SYS team are expecting around 15,000 attendees to visit throughout the week. “We’ve got a great turnout from all the main production boat brands again, with the biggest number of world or Asian premières ever. We also have some pretty spectacular superyachts coming - we’ve just confirmed Silver Fast, which will be the biggest boat we’ve ever had in the show. She’s very much for sale and there are a few very interested clients in this part of the world, so we’re hoping for good things,” says Treadwell.

The show continues to promote the region as a perfect winter destination for superyachts, and an important potential market for the superyacht industry. “The key thing about Singapore is that it is the one place in Asia where everybody from the region will come,” he continues. “Wealthy businessmen and women love coming to Singapore from China, Indonesia, Malaysia and right around the region. It’s a great business hub, right at the epicentre of the most beautiful, most extensive, yet virtually undiscovered yachting destination in the world.” As Treadwell explains, popular yachting locations Phuket and the Indonesian islands are merely a day’s sail away, making the area a prime logistical hub. The show welcomes established clients from all over Asia-Pacific, but also serves as an introduction to the world of yachting for many more wealthy people newly interested in the yachting lifestyle and perhaps chartering or owning a vessel.

Next week will also see the Asia Pacific Yachting Conference , chaired by Martin Redmayne of The Superyacht Group. The two-day programme will cover as many aspects of the Asia-Pacific market as a day-and-a-half forum can encompass, including panel discussions on the trends in yacht migration, improving the area’s local superyacht infrastructure and marketing Asia to new clients, as well as an Asia Pacific Progress report. The conference will welcome industry experts from a cross-section of the market, from both Asia and Europe.

To keep up with all the action from next week, the SuperyachtNews team will be reporting with a live blog from the Singapore Yacht Show and the Asia Pacific Yachting Conference. For more information on the show, click here.

The Singapore Yacht Show Signals Potential for Growth in the Charter Industry

By Editorial Team   2 May 2015

As Singapore reaps the benefits of their most successful yacht show to date, YachtCharterFleet examine whether the charter industry has the potential to thrive in the current climate.

The unfortunate weather did not dampen the success of the recent Singapore Yacht Show , as the event’s fifth edition welcomed an abundance of serious buyers through its doors. Managing Director of event organiser, Andy Treadwell commented “The presence and enthusiasm of serious buyers and HNWIs was strongly felt at this year’s Show.” The evidence reinforced this, with Simpson Marine announcing record sales during the show, with several buyers signing across the dotted line for sub 24-metre yachts without official ‘superyacht’ status.

The show’s popularity clearly demonstrates the desire across Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand to be a part of the industry, with many yacht brokers taking advantage of this and choosing Asia as the location of their next headquarters, and shipyards like Benetti announcing successful sales from recently opening two Hong Kong-based offices.

Despite the positivity surrounding the yachting following the Singapore Yacht Show, the logistics of organising a Singapore luxury yacht show prove problematic and potentially detrimental to the industry’s growth. Although extra effort is necessary when planning with a charter broker, the city blends spectacular architecture with billion dollar gardens, with a thriving contemporary art and culinary scene found along the way, leading it to becoming increasingly present on many ‘must-visit’ destination guides. As well as the appeal of the Asia Pacific’s unspoiled beauty, cruising here is not as overcrowded as more commonly visited yachting hubs.

ONE°15 Marina Club hosts the singapore yacht show

Planning a Singapore Yacht Charter

“There is a genuine and growing interest in yachting here, both from new Asian buyers and from Western yacht owners bringing their yachts to the region to cruise,” according to organiser Andy Treadwill, although legislation can provide a barrier to putting plans into action. Without the right to charter in the region, charter yachts are required to travel outside the region to enjoy the benefits of superyachts like 69m/223ft  motor yacht SALUZI purposefully designed to appeal to “growing enthusiasm to spend time on the water” locally.

Bart Kimman, Northrop & Johnson’s Managing Director, suggests smaller vessels, such as the 22m/73ft luxury yacht SONAMARA , are key to igniting the yacht market in Singapore, Hong Kong and Phuket. With over a hundred smaller yachts lining up against seven ‘superyachts,’ he commented “The bread and butter business is definitely the smaller end of the market, and the top end is beginning, but it's still a very small number.”

Voices in the industry suggest day charters can ignite Asia’s somewhat tepid interest in yacht chartering. Following successfully organising a clear tax structure for foreign flagged yachts coming in to Australia with PwC, Cameron Bray from Bray Yacht Management commented that “perhaps day charters is the best way to approach it rather that term charters,” so locals can “put their big toe in the water” and “get a taste of superyacht life.”

Benefits for the Industry

An increasing number of Singaporeans interested in the luxury industry getting a taste of the “superyacht life” has it perks – however gradual shifting a hesitant attitude towards yachting will be. The market may be small in comparison to the U.S. and Europe, but building on “a growing enthusiasm to spend time on the water” (Andy Treadwell) can have a huge effect on a country’s revenue in the long-term - as seen in growing yachting hubs such as New Zealand – as yacht charterers eventually become yacht buyers.

With a pro-active attitude to the industry the country can also benefit from tourism, with several Mediterranean yacht charterers and Captains looking to venture somewhere new – countries such as Singapore can be the ones to benefit, alongside Asia’s other yachting destinations, such as Hong Kong.

Looking to the Future

The increased exposure to yachting opportunities within the luxury arena – signalled by the popularity of the 2015 Singapore Yacht Show and presence of noteworthy superyachts such as the 76m/248ft motor yacht ANASTASIA (seen above) - to yachting opportunities within the luxury arena, coupled with Asia’s increasing financial power indicates positivity for the future of the Singaporean yachting industry.

Change is needed, however, to reap the benefits of a growing interest in superyachts by making the gateway to yacht sales, yacht chartering, notably easier to those interested parties in Southeast Asia. With the Thai government currently working towards changes to superyacht charter regulations for 2016, there is positivity surrounding the future of yacht chartering in Asia.

The 2016 Singapore Yacht Show has been announced as taking place from 7 and 10 April at ONE°15 Marina Club in Sentosa Cove, for more information about attending, please contact your preferred charter broker .

Singapore Yacht Show set for "runaway success"

Preparations are in full swing for the ninth edition of the Singapore Yacht Show next month. The four-day event, which will take place from April 11 – 14, will once again be hosted at its long-standing location the ONE°15 Marina in Sentosa Cove.

Boasting a greater roster of yachts than anywhere else in the region, the Singapore Yacht Show will welcome exhibitors including superyacht builders and product manufacturers, along with a raft of luxury lifestyle brands.

The show will kick off on April 10 with the Singapore Yacht Show Gala Evening and Awards, a black tie 1920s-themed event held at the Capitol Theatre.

Meanwhile, a number of regional debuts have been confirmed. The F45, Y85 and R35 models from Princess Yachts will all have their Asian premieres, alongside Sanlorenzo’s SD126 and the SL86.

The MY40 and Alegria 67 models from multihull specialist Fountaine Pajot will also have their Asian debuts.

Elsewhere the Floating Leisure Hub, which will be located in the middle of the marina, will feature demonstrations of the latest toys, including Jet Skis, submersibles and drones.

Chief executive of Singapore Yacht Show organiser Verventia Andy Treadwell predicted the show will be a “runaway success”, reprising 2018's performance.

“The fact that so many world-leading boating brands have once again chosen the Singapore Yacht Show 2019 as the platform from which to launch their latest models into the Asian market is extremely gratifying,” he said.

“It’s actually an indictment of the runaway success of last year’s SYS, at which all of our biggest exhibitors made record sales.”

Singapore Yacht Show Interview

November 27, 2013 / Lifestyle & Travel , News

Andy Treadwell of Singapore Yacht Events, in this Derani Yachts interview, continues talking about the support from Singapore, the potential for boating to grow in the area, the need for growing infrastructure, the hub, advocacy work and the finally the yacht show 2013 feedback.

How is the support from the Singapore government and maybe what more could be needed as support for yachting?

Singapore, as we all know, has always been very smart and positive, very pro-active. They agreed immediately to support me in this show, and they’ve given me big support on marketing, helping us reaching out to a global audience and getting people to come here.

ONE°15 Marina Club and the Sentosa Development Corporation have also been very collaborative, both long-term supporting partners.

The problem with places like Singapore is there isn’t really much space for the infrastructure that our industry needs: refit and repair. Waterfront commercial property is very limited, and these really prime areas are needed for the commercial shipping and oil industries, which bring in huge revenues, whilst the pleasure boat industry at the moment is still very small. There are other places nearby where there is more space and there are the facilities – Langkawi and Phuket, for example – where the boats can go for refit and repair, but it seems a shame that we can’t keep the business in Singapore, where the owners and captains love to be based.

In this scenario, can boat/yacht brokerage in Singapore as such grow and be able to offer what is needed in terms of services?

I don’t think there is a problem there, because Singapore is rapidly becoming the place where everyone wants to come, and lots of people want to be. It’s a brilliant place for the yacht show because businessmen want to come here for so many other reasons – to do their banking, visit the casinos, play golf, get medial care, and so on – all the lifestyle reasons… it’s the main hub for the whole region now.

So it’s not a problem that there’s not the infrastructure, or that Singapore is not the yachting destination with cruising locations and dive sites. The point is that this is strategically the best place, because it’s the business destination, right at the gateway to the whole region. It’s really not far to go to those places where there is room for the refit and repair, or the fantastic cruising waters close by where owners and their guests can enjoy boating.

Should the boat show be seen as the boat show for the region?

I think that it’s certainly the yacht show for the region! I don’t think you can have too many shows, and this is something that the industry echoes time and time again. So I definitely hope it’ll become the yacht show for the region.

In terms of boat shows, for smaller boats, I think we also need – but only at the right time in terms of the industry’s development – some kind of local promotional event in new places. It doesn’t have to be a boat show, but we do need a way to introduce wealthy local people in a new country to the pleasures of boating. I’m thinking of places like the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and so on – but it needs to be the right kind of event, and we have a concept for this. I don’t think inexperienced people should jump on the bandwagon and go and announce new boat shows everywhere every five minutes – it’s the wrong concept, it won’t work, and the industry shouldn’t support them!

How do you view Singapore as a hub, and what do you envision in growth for the yachting sector for the coming three-year period?

I think it’s reflected in this particular show, which has doubled in size in terms of the number of boats each year since we started. At the superyacht end, the fact that there are now 50 boats who have been at some stage based in Phuket this season, that’s probably the strongest tell-tale of all that the industry is growing and is finally reaching the kind of numbers that we hoped for when we first started looking at Asia in 2008.

Having said that, for some people, cruising up to Burma where there’s no infrastructure at all, well, that’s part of its charm! They don’t necessarily all want to be able to tie up in a beautiful marina with restaurants on their doorstep…!

But they do need protected anchorages, and ideally we need marinas. Marinas are being developed and that’ll continue to grow. Preferably, it needs to be the right kind of developers who are passionate about the industry and the lifestyle of yachting – there are plenty of them around – to ensure that the infrastructure will keep up. By boosting the yachting scene, as the show is doing, more entrepreneurs will be encouraged to build marinas.

Are you doing advocacy work as well to convince local authorities to help the industry?

We actually facilitate those kinds of conversations; we run an industry conference for that very reason. The industry itself, the associations as well as brokers, dealers and builders – these are the people who should really be lobbying governments, and I am of course absolutely delighted to do whatever I can to help. It’s as much in my interest as a show organiser as anybody else’s. Right now, we are working with the Thai Marine Business Association to persuade the government in Thailand to change the current regulations and allow internationally flagged yachts to charter there – that would probably be the single biggest boost to the regional industry.

How was the feedback and result of this year’s Singapore Yacht Show?

I have to say fantastic – the show was not perfect by any means, and we still have a long way to go – but our exhibitors were universally kind, as you can see from the comments and quotes in the Post Show Report online. We will be constantly seeking more and more, better quality visitors, and we want to see our exhibitors making more and more sales!

The Hong Kong Cruise & Yacht Industry Association and Verventia Pte Ltd, organisers of Singapore and Thailand Yacht Shows, have joined forces to launch the Hong Kong Yacht Show - bringing a new international showcase to Asia’s most mature yachting market.

Kara Yeung and Andy Treadwell are joined by Benjamin Wong of Invest Hong Kong at a recent meeting to discuss HK Government support for the show and the yachting industry

The Hong Kong Cruise & Yacht Industry Association and Verventia Pte Ltd, organiser of Singapore and Thailand Yacht Shows (SYS and TYS), have today confirmed the launch of a new jointly-organised Hong Kong Yacht Show at the International Cruise and Yachting Festival (Hong Kong) 2020, which will take place at Kwun Tong Typhoon Shelter adjacent to the Kai Tak Runway Park Promenade from November 19-22, and annually thereafter.

An MOU committing to the partnership was signed at a press conference held during SYS 2019 last April, when Ms Kara Yeung, Chief Executive of HKCYIA, and Andy Treadwell, Verventia CEO, outlined the rationale behind the launch of the show in 2020.

The organisers’ objective is to promote and develop the yachting industry in Hong Kong and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (the Greater Bay Area). By common consent, this will bring prosperity and positive economic impact to local businesses and the supply chain throughout the China market, as well as positive international PR, inward investment, maritime education and protection of the oceans to support the Hong Kong yacht industry, together with the creation of employment.

Ms. Yeung said today: “Hong Kong has by far one of the biggest potential markets in Asia. We are delighted to bring the Verventia organising team into this joint venture, as planned last year, because they are experienced Yacht Show organisers who have made a remarkable success of the Singapore show over the last seven years. We look forward to a long and fruitful collaboration which will boost the local and global yachting industries, as well as bringing new business, jobs and prosperity to local service, supply and hospitality industries.”

Treadwell added: “What Kara has achieved in the last couple of years to get this project off the ground is fantastic. Neither we nor our fellow industry practitioners could have done this without the HKCYIA. We can, however, bring in international players, and we know how to promote the show to potential buyers, so in that sense it’s a perfect partnership that we hope to develop steadily over the next few years.”

The Yacht Show and the festival will officially be launched at a special event for the Hong Kong Yacht Industry at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, provisionally to be held on April 23 - details will be announced shortly.
