Space reimagined. Built by Robertson & Caine and designed by naval architects Simonis Voogd, the Leopard 45 fully expresses the Leopard range, leaving no detail to chance. Combining an enhanced interior and a sleek exterior for which the brand is known, the Leopard 45 is the result of informed feedback from cruising clients and masterful production expertise spanning 25 years. Shortly after its debut in 2017, the Leopard 45 was awarded Boat of the Year honors, solidifying the company’s continuous innovation and commitment to the finest materials and building techniques. The exterior styling has evolved to include a hardtop lounge, first seen in the line’s award-winning Leopard 50. The lounge includes a seating area, a sunbed and a table. Here, the helm station remains protected and integrated into the cockpit of the boat. The Leopard 45 is available in a three or four-cabin layout all with private ensuite heads with their own designated shower area, providing the ultimate livability, comfort and movement for all onboard. The open-plan saloon and galley bring an openness with natural light that is conducive for gathering, preparing meals and charting tomorrow’s destination. Smart, ergonomic design and the latest technology come together in a larger forward cockpit, increased aft area, and entertainment package that delivers an uncompromised onboard experience. The Leopard 45 has won cruisers over for its exceptional build, sailing comfort and ease of handling. Discover new horizons and the freedom Leopard brings to everyone on board.

How much is a 45 foot catamaran? 5 Great Options.

catamaran 45

Quick answer is $300,000 to $600,000. But you could also pay as much as $1 million for a fully loaded catamaran like La Vagabonde’s brand new Outremer 45 or as little as $150,000 for a late 1990’s Prout 45 or Leopard 45. These prices are all considering you are asking about a catamaran in reasonable condition and with appropriate cruising equipment. Project catamarans could end up costing much less initially although very likely much more eventually as typically you pay a premium in sailing for the “refit experience.” The upside is a long escape working in a boatyard that allows you to escape from your wife and children if that is your goal. We do not recommend the approach and this website while offering a wide selection of catamarans prefers to advertise that are in good condition at great prices to our visitors.

Another budget aspect to consider is maintenance costs of a 45 foot catamaran. Here the typical assessment is you spend 10% of a catamaran’s value yearly to keep her in good condition at a safe mooring and with proper reserves for depreciation costs.

We answer this question here because oddly the 45 foot number is a common online search and common question we receive. The number 45 has long history in sailing as in the old days of monohull sailboats, the ideal cruiser was thought of as a 45 foot center cockpit. Technology has evolved and proved that two hulls are superior to one yet the 45 feet in length is a sensible universal constant. The reason? Certainly a 45 foot catamaran features a dramatic increase in interior volume as compared to old technology. We suspect that the 45 foot ideal length is more determined by cruising speed and comfort in a wide variety of offshore conditions as well as the size at which length is not a limitation in terms of docking or maneuvering requiring additional crew.

To further provide specifics on your options for a 45 foot catamaran please see example models below.

1. Lagoon 450

catamaran 45

The highest volume 45 foot model in production currently. New style design with large accommodations, wide beam, and tall mainsail. Comes in flybridge and sport version with different helm configurations. This design is an evolution of the Lagoon 440. Prices range from $400,000 to $700,000 from an old charter 2011 model to a brand new owner’s version. See our Lagoon 450 specifications and a list current example for sale.

2. Leopard 45

catamaran 45

The classic Leopard 45 was built from 1997 to 2001 and should not be confused with the new version of the model by the same name. These are affordable ex charter catamarans with old school builds. Watch out for wet balsa coring like on any 20 year old cored hull catamaran. Prices range from $200,000 to $250,000. See our Leopard 45 page for more specifications and options currently for sale .

3. Prout 45

catamaran 45

The Prout 45 model is the oldest fashioned model on this list and least expensive coming in at $150,000 to $250,000. These feature a cutter rig with two headsails and a very aftmost main mast. This headsail powered sailplan is very unusual for catamarans options at this size range. Please see our specifications for more information and for sale page for current examples for sale .

4. Outremer 45

catamaran 45

Made famous by Outremer’s special sale of an example to La Vagabonde stars. While at a base price it may be $700,000 when fully outfitted this boat nears $1 million USD. Performance oriented design with daggerboards and outboard helms with tillers. With the pricing and performance focus, this is a less common design.

5. Privilege 45

catamaran 45

Lying somewhere between the classic Prout 45 and middle aged Leopard 45, this older Privilege design ranges in price from $150,000 to $250,000. These were high end charter boats in their day with a very good reputation for build quality, performance, and interior fit / finish. See our Privilege specifications and examples for sale .

Outremer 45 catamaran.

Outremer strives to build fast-cruising catamarans while also not compromising on safety and comfort. First launched in 2015 and still in production, Outremer 45 is designed for sustained offshore cruising for extended periods of time – much like its predecessors Outremer 51 and Outremer 5X .

Table of Contents

DESIGN – INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR

The Outremer 45 is a product of architecture by Barreau-Neuman, style by Partick Le Quement and interior design by Darnet Design. Outremer offers different options to the owners to truly customize the look of the interior according to their wishes. One such option is teak wood finishing, which gives Outremer 45 a gorgeous look.

The cockpit of the Outremer 45 is accessed via two big steps and built asymmetrically. It is wide and spacious and protected by a rigid bimini and canvases stretched to each of its sides. It comes with a built-in table and L-shaped bench, which, along with an opposing bench, can comfortably accommodate up to 8 people. The cockpit table is convertible and can be transformed into a berth if needed. The seats also have storage lockers underneath them. The cockpit is at level with the saloon and is accessed via a sliding glass door. The galley has access directly into the cockpit, so serving food and drinks is easy and efficient.

To aft is a single, raised helm station on the coachroof, which is accessed via three steps. It has a wheel to port and is complete with the engine control and mainsail halyard. All the lines for the mainsail and self-tacking jib are controlled from the helm, allowing shorthand sailing. The visibility from the helm station is excellent, and all four corners of the catamaran can be seen from the station, which allows for safe maneuvering. Outremer 45 also offers carbon-fiber tiller and a space-pod chair to experience steering of a different kind.

The side decks of Outremer 45 are wide and well-protected by grab rails and toe rails. The Outremer 45 also features daggerboards that optimize its performance for better upwind and downwind sailing. The lockers along the side decks are deep and spacious enough to not only store all the sails and ropes but any other equipment such as kayaks that a family might want to carry along.

The foredeck is long yet narrow and has no seating available, with space was taken over by two long trampolines. This allows the catamaran to cut back on its weight and offers exceptional hydro-dynamic performance – something also achieved by placing the bow length forward of the mast.

Movement from the cockpit to saloon and vice versa is easy and smooth. Inside the saloon, the large slanting windows give a complete 350-degree view of the world outside. This, along with multiple opening hatches and portholes inside the saloon, also makes the saloon bright and well-ventilated.

The settee, facing aft, is comfortable and large and is compounded by an additional bench stowed away under the table. Altogether, up to 8 people can be seated inside the saloon around the built-in table. The table can also telescopes down to become a berth.

The galley on the Outremer 45 is L-shaped and ergonomic. It is also stylish, with a sleek countertop and stainless steel sink. It offers a 3-burner stove, which is rather compact, and also has a refrigerator on the opposite side. The galley also features ample space for storage in the form of a pantry with sliding drawers.

The navigation station faces forward and takes advantage of the panoramic view offered by the windows to provide a great view while on watch. The station itself is well-equipped, and the desk is spacious enough for charts or a laptop to be placed.

  ACCOMMODATIONS

The Outremer 45 offers two different versions – a 3-cabin layout with the entire starboard dedicated to the owner and a 4-cabin layout, which has an additional cabin in the starboard hull.

The owner’s version has a large 1.6 x 2.0 meters double berth in the cabin but no access around the berth. There is storage and wardrobe space to the side, and the cabin is secured with a sliding door. The corridor beyond has ample storage space in the form of cupboards and shelves. The forward section has a large bathroom and a separate shower. The cabin has good air circulation and is also bright with a lot of light filtering through its many windows.

There are two cabins to port in the guest hull with the aft cabin symmetrical to the owner’s cabin. The key feature of the aft cabin is the large, fixed, rectangular porthole, which gives a great view of the outside. The forward cabin is slightly smaller than the aft cabin and has a smaller berth. The shared bathroom in the corridor is compact yet functional with a sink, head, and shower.

ENGINE ROOMS

Outremer 45 is powered by two Volvo 30 HP diesel engines that can acquire a top speed of 8.5 knots. The engines are accessible from outside, through a deck hatch located on the transom.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

The overall length of Outremer 45 is 14.62 meters while the draft is 2.15 meters. The maximum beam of 45 is 7.1 meters, and a maximum displacement is 11,100 kg.

PRICE RANGE

The price of Outremer 45 ranges from $700,000 to $750,000.

In conclusion, Outremer 45 is an above-average Outremer built with a focus on improved performance and increased speed. It is sturdy and durable yet also easy to manage with a small crew, making it ideal for a family seeking to take multiple trips around the world.

15 of our favorite 35 to 45-foot catamarans

Rather well-canvassed and above all quite light, this catamaran is reputed to sail well.

Curvy and convivial, the saloon is adjacent to a functional galley.

Fast for its size, the 381 is also pleasant to sail. Top speeds of 20 knots are on the cards!

The nacelle’s low volume and the narrow hulls lend themselves more to a small crew.

The 380 takes up the broad outline of the 410, which came out three years earlier…but offers engines accessible via rear lockers rather than under the berths.

The nacelle and its large vertical portlights offer an uninterrupted view and excellent protection from the sun.

Certain owners report top speeds of over 18 knots. Seawinds are fast!

The nacelle is occupied by the saloon alone; as a result, there is no lack of space at aperitif time!

An unusual silhouette, especially head on… But the marked longitudinal steps in the hulls keep the waterline beam moderate, and offer good performance.

Small floor area in the nacelle, but welcome vertical portlights to limit the greenhouse effect.

Well-canvassed, the Lavezzi is capable of averaging 9 knots during ocean passages – if the trade winds are present.

The triangular saloon table and the offset companionways guarantee easy movement around the bridgedeck.

The steering positions offer a good view of the sail plan.

At the cost of less than fluid movement around the boat, nothing is lacking aboard, and you can spend long months on the water.

Maximum freeboard for comfort in the hulls, but a tall rig so you don’t get stuck in light airs.

The owner’s version which offers the happy skipper a full hull, with a large bathroom and desk, is our preference. The companionway can even be closed, to cut oneself off from the bridgedeck.

The first examples, equipped with a non-overlapping jib, deserve a ‘real’ genoa, to pep them up!

Rounded saloon and athwartships aft berths: the designer Olivier Flahault presents some appealing and functional innovations.

51 four-cabin models as opposed to 13 private owner’s versions: it’s not easy to find a three-cabin boat!

All the Leopard 43’s berths are arranged athwartships.

Two innovations on deck: the builder has provided a forward cockpit and a raised steering position.

The vertical portlights provide an exceptional view of the sea, light and no greenhouse effect. At the price of debatable aerodynamics.

Thanks to its double 'steps', the Leopard 44 succeeds in keeping the hulls quite slim at the waterline.

With 2.12 m of headroom, the saloon is comfortable. And there is no lack of light, thanks to its generous portlights.

The sail plan, with its mast positioned well forward, clearly favors the mainsail.

The U-shaped galley inherited from monohulls is appealing in use: you are perfectly secure when the sea is rough.

Marc Lombard took great care to design rather slim hulls. A good point for performance.

Inside, we find once again the Privilege finishing quality and the very special atmosphere aboard these catamarans built for demanding owners.

This 45 is certainly a particularly fast catamaran, but it is also very safe in heavy weather.

The compact nacelle reduces the liveable volume. Ideal for lightening the boat and offering more trampoline area.

Second-hand is of course cheaper…and is often the opportunity to sail aboard a multihull which is ready to set off (again). From 35 to 45 feet, the budgets remain moderate, with some good opportunities. We have chosen for you 15 of the most well-known 35 to 45-foot boats, which will therefore be easy to re-sell when you return – if you choose to return one day…

Athena 38 Best seller in the under 40-foot category

catamaran 45

In 1994, the Athena 38 came in between the Tobago 35 and the Venezia 42, two boats whose design it echoed – rounded lines, pug-nosed bows and a coachroof extension. Although it remains relatively lightweight, it is slower than the builder’s previous models. Its hulls are in fact appreciably beamier, and the freeboard is higher. It is thus perfectly suited to a long cruise in the West Indies or the Mediterranean, as a couple or a family. On the other hand, during long passages, it is a little lacking in length for a smooth passage through the sea. Nevertheless, its load-carrying capacity is appreciable for a catamaran of less than 40'. Pleasant under sail, easy to handle, this model quickly became a great commercial success – for both charter companies and private individuals – to such a point that it remained in its builder’s catalogue for almost 10 years. In 1998, the Athena was improved: we enjoyed a better view forward, thanks to a new steering position, directly inspired by the one on the Bahia 46. A solid platform was also provided, aft of the mainsheet track. This model’s strong points: great comfort, despite its modest size, easy movement both on deck and inside, and a particularly successful rounded saloon. The finishing on this model is clearly improved, compared to previous generations; just a few glued headlinings can be noticed here and there.

The plusses: very liveable catamaran for its size, good performance, very pleasant bridgedeck

The minuses: Not comfortable to windward in big seas, tiny hull portlights, small chart table

Most of the boats are still in good overall condition. To be checked: sails, engines, electric circuit, standing and running rigging. For those who wish to set off, check the following points: forestay and gooseneck fixing points, and steering cables.

Outremer 45

outremer45-3

Description

catamaran 45

Lovely Lines The 45 is a great looking boat, well proportioned and designed to deliver the Outremer promise: fast, safe sailing in comfort. For the French yard, comfort is more about the motion of the boat and speed of passage than huge berths in fat hulls. This is an ocean crossing boat like a Looping catamaran : one that gets going quickly in light airs and which is a blast to sail in windier conditions. It’s incredible how catamaran design has evolved in 20 years (read our Prout 45 review for a comparison of a boat from the mid nineties).

Photos credit, catamaran-outremer.com, sailing-lavagabonde.com

  • The Outremer 45 is a fast, seaworthy yacht designed for crossing oceans. She is probably the market leader in her category.
  • With centralised weight and those long trampolines, she has a smooth ride in waves.
  • She’s well built and sturdy, and great to look at.
  • The Outremer after-sales service has an excellent reputation, especially compared to other French manufacturers which, how should we put this, …. are not so fast once they have sold you the boat. If you have a problem in Tahiti, these guys will do their best to help you out.
  • Outremer also offer a thorough training program for purchasers of new boats. Their philosophy is one of building up a family of owners: something to be applauded.
  • Outremers hold their value very well compared to other manufacturers. These boats are in demand.
  • The compromise is living space compared to other 45 footers. So even though she’s the same length as, for example, a Nautitech 46, she feels like a 40 once you step inside. But you will be leaving the Nautitechs behind on the 45.
  • With the aft cockpit covered by a long strip rather than a full bimini, you are more exposed on a 45 than other catamrans. You can opt for material or hard “ears” which extends the cover out to full width for some of the bimini length. Some owners opt for a dodger at the helm station as well.
  • This bucket seats could be a little bigger.
  • The base price is pretty competitive, but the options can add up.

The hulls and deck are constructed in vinylester with a divinycell core and beneath the waterline the boat is solid glass for safety in the event of a grounding. Carbon is used in high-stress areas and the bows have multiple “crash boxes” to contain the danger of taking in water in a collision. The daggerboard trunks are tough and the boards have been designed to fail on impact. The upshot is that this is catamaran with a considerable amount of time and effort that has been spent on safety aspects.

Those slender hulls mean that this is a quick boat, but the compromise is living space. Have a read of our Voyage 480 review if you are looking for a bigger living area: there are plenty of options out there, but if you want to get to your destination quickly and safely, no-one does it better than Outremer,

These yachts are designed to last 50 years according to Director of Sales Matthieu Rougevin-Baville.

Let´s talk about sailing first, shall we, as that´s the main reason for buying an Outremer 45. She is powered by a substantial fully-battened square-top main. Up front is a self-tacking solent and larger sails are flown off the bowsprit. With her narrow hulls, and decent length she moves through the water nicely, and the low-profile deck house is shaped to reduce wind resistance, just like her predecessor. The design has moved on from the older design of the earlier 45, but you can still spot the DNA.

Lines Back to the Helm All control lines for the mainsail and the self tacking solent come back to the helm, where you can also control the gennaker, code 0 or code D furler: all of these sails have halyards running to the helm as well if you want to set it up that way.

Her motion is kindly for a 45 footer and you can expect to be hitting speeds in the teens when the wind hits 15 knots and over. As long as you don´t overload her, you will see speeds of 5 knots and more, even in light winds: you don´t see these boats at the fuel dock that often. The plan on this boat is to achieve 80 to 90% of true wind speeds.  In a 5 knot breeze, for example, the Outremer 45 should hit 4-4.5 knots, and 15 knots is an attainable target in windier conditions. You’ll see 20 knots and over surfing if you can handle the adrenaline and you have your waterproof pants on.

With the daggerboards up, draft is only 85cm and the draft when is 2 meters: this allows the Outremer 45 to point higher into the wind and keeps the speed up will minimising leeway.

The 45 feels like a safe boat to clamber around on, with wide decks which are an easy hop up from the cockpit and plenty of handrails along the coachroof with patches of anti-skid in all of the right areas.

A Boat for Sailors You sail from a single port helm station and you can add the option of twin outboard tillers with bucket seats for maximum sailing feel at the back of the boat. I’d say that’s a compulsory option.

The main traveler runs along the width of the aft cockpit where you have a decent dining table. Other lines like the controls for the boards and the furling line for the headsail run all the way aft, and there are Lewmar winches, tracks and blocks with Spinlock clutches to help you manage the sails.

Centralised Weight For a Smooth Ride You’ll notice in general that the Outremer 45 has long nets and a shorter cabin top than many other catamarans. This helps to keep the weight in the middle of the boat and is one of the ways that they achieve such a smooth ride.

Up on those long nets, you notice that the trampolines are split by a central beam along which the anchor chain runs. You can drop anchor from the helm or directly at the windlass.

A great safety feature is the location of the life raft in the port trampoline. The water and diesel tanks (300 liters each) are forward of the mast and you will find two large, forward, lockers for your additional equipment and sails.

Of course, there is one area that you will need to compromise on in order to achieve all of this speed and centalised wieght and that is in the living area.

Clever Use of Available Space Compared to a production cruising cat, the space is more limited of course, but Outremer have done a great job of maximising comfort in the available space. You can choose between the 3 cabin Owner’s or the Four Cabin version.

The saloon is well designed with an L-shaped galley to starboard which flows through to the aft cockpit when the large sliding door is open. There is a decent nav station, and plenty of seating – it’s a well thought out design.

With those slender hulls, she slips nicely through the water powered by twin 30HP Volvos, comfortably achieving 6 knots with one engine going at 2200 RPM and 7.5 with 2. The idea is to get sailing as quickly as possible on these boats though. As soon as a breeze kicks in, you should be sailing.

Going Greener and Greener Solar panels are standard on all Outremers (the 45 has 560 W of power). Add a hydro-generator and lithium batteries, and you will achieve some very good generation and storage numbers. The 45 will come in an electric version (Outrememr 45E) which is being developed for Jimmy Cornell.

How much does an Outremer 45 Cost? What is the Price? This is highly dependent on the options you go for, but a figure of around €750 – 800k gets you in the right ball park for a new boat.

Do Outremer Produce Other Versions of the 45? They are developing an all electric version with Jimmy Cornell called the 4E. There will also be a hybrid model available called the 4H.

The Outremer 45 is built to sail:  she’s a safe and secure catamaran designed to be handled with a small crew. For long voyages, this boat is probably the market leader in her class.

Designing a catamaran to follow Gérard Danson’s much loved design was never going to be easy, but Barreau and Neuman have pulled it off once again, designing a catamaran that moves as well, but is more comfortable with the same length to displacement ratio.

Their forward-facing propellers and electronic controls provide precise low speed manoeuvrability, “skyhook positioning or virtual anchoring”, as well as drastic performance improvements including; 20% increase in top speed, 40% increase in cruising range, 30% reduction in fuel consumption & CO2 emissions.
