A Must Do ADVENTURE!

The boat was in amazing shape and crew was extremely professional and knowledgeable. Safety measures were taken seriously even though we took the “Happy Hour” cruise with our two teenage girls. They had cocktails and craft sodas- a crowd pleaser for my picky teens. You could also bring your own snacks on board which was good because we were starving after being at the beach all day. I’d recommend planning in advance because they sell out almost every day.

It was a beautiful night filled with laughter and friends on the cat! We felt very secure and safe floating around in GT Bay. Awesome time!

Planned a trip with a group of guys, all of for a few days of golf. The Nauti-Cat Cruise provided us a nice break, with time to enjoy one-another's company over good conversation and cocktails (get the green punch!). Captain Chein and his Crew (Chris & Jake) were wonderfully hospitable, delivering a fun time and good vibes, throughout. Will definitely look to do this, again, when making my way back-up with the family.

Took my daughter, grandson and son on the Noon Cruise. It was a wonderful experience for all. First time for the 4 of us. The crew was awesome. Highly recommend it.

The weather happened to be perfect. Crew was fun. Music was great. Lots of fun and would do it again.

Our group enjoyed our Catamaran cruise so much! The drinks were great and music provided good entertainment. We paid for a dance from one of the captains, and that’s the only thing we’d change. Glad we didn’t spend as much as other groups because it was kind of silly and unnecessary—but still funny at the same time.

Great day. Chris was our captain and did a great job of explaining how the cruise was going to take place. Aaron is also very very good.

Oh my goodness I LOVE NAUTI-CAT CRUISES! I was in Traverse City for my friend's bachelorette and we did the sunset champagne cruise one of the days! We definitely booked it well in advance, since especially for weekend days/sunset cruises they tend to sell out. We showed up about half an hour before our cruise departure and after checking us all in and showing them our confirmation emails, there was definitely time to sit and relax for quite a bit before we boarded the catamaran. Apparently you're allowed to bring food aboard, but not drinks! I noticed because many parties were bringing coolers and I was confused by that, but then saw that they were all pulling out trays of food from them! When you board the ship, you basically just pick where on the catamaran you're going to sit. My friend group chose one of those front parts of the catamaran that has the netting, which was actually very comfortable to sit in and you do not get spray at all, even though I was totally expecting that! The ride is genuinely so smooth and not at all rocky like you would expect from a sailboat! The experience was seriously so fun! The vibes aboard the Nauti-Cat were pristine as the two guys operating the boat (one would steer while the other went around the boat to get all the lines ready and whatnot) were so nice and so friendly and just wanted everyone to have a good time! Once we were properly sailing and our Nauti-Cat sail was up, then one of the guys would go to the bar and open it for you to order drinks from! They have a specific Nauti-Cat drink that apparently everyone LOVED but it's also extremely strong, so watch out haha! They took us around the bay, but frankly I got so turned around and was busy enjoying the general ambiance and my friend's company, so I have no idea how far we went out and when we turned back around! But at one point it seemed like we went out as far as we would go and stopped and chilled there for a bit while we popped the champagne that was provided aboard! Some things to note: There are bathrooms on board if you need them, but I didn't use them so have no idea how they are. It definitely gets chilly on the water, even on a July summer evening, so definitely bring layers just in case! They do go around and provide blankets, which is so nice as well! The entire trip was around 2 hours and we got back to the dock around 9 pm and it was still light out and the sun was just setting, which gave us this beautiful, pink sunset. It was truly such a fantastic trip and I think it was around $50-$60 per person, which for such an incredible experience is more than worth it! There's nothing quite like being out on Grand Traverse Bay on a summer evening in Michigan surrounded by great company! I absolutely loved every second of it and will be making all future groups that I go with to Traverse City in the summer to do this again with me because there's quite nothing like it!

We had an amazing time. Music was great! The bartender and the captain were so friendly and fun. We had 48 on our boat and I think everyone had a great time!!! Drinks were cheap and good and strong!!!

We had a fabulous time on our cruise. We had our grandchildren and the staff included them in sailing functions. They will never forget our cruise...it was the highlight of our vacation.

We went on a lovely noon cruise on the Nauti-Cat. While we would've preferred the sunset champagne cruise, our schedule didn't allow it so we opted for the noon cruise. While it was sunny, it got pretty chilly. Make sure you check the forecast and bring blankets, if necessary! The guys who were in charge were friendly and funny. The rum punch that they call "cat nip" was very good and dangerous! Highly recommend this company for a cruise while you're in TC. We look forward to trying the champagne cruise the next time we're in town.

Had a great time on the Nauti-Cat cruise. The Captain and crew were very friendly and provided excellent service. Everything ran smoothly and efficiently. We unfortunately had very little wind on our trip but the Nauti- Cat engine took us ok our experience with no issues with a little help from the wind. I would recommend to anyone and the prices are very reasonable.

We went on the Happy Hour cruise (3:30-5:30). There were around 40 people on our boat with multiple large groups together. It was pretty loud & alot drunk people. I kind of expected to go further out in the bay & much faster. We kind of just floated around while people drank

Photo of Jenny B.

This was our first time visiting TC and we saw this advertised for a sunset cruise. Our family had a blast , the crew is awesome and we had the perfect night for a boat ride!! What else could you ask for - boat ride - drinks - music- and a great sunset! Would do it again when we go back . Thanks for a great trip !

What a fun and relaxing time! The noon boat ride was the perfect excursion to do while in Traverse City. A must do for sure

There's no better way to experience Lake Michigan than directly on the water, and Traverse City has several options for travelers to be able to do just that. Highly-rated boat tour operators in the area include Nauti-Cat and Traverse Tall Ship Company .

The main difference between these two companies is that Nauti-Cat is a catamaran and the Traverse Tall Ship Company is an old-fashioned schooner. Nauti-Cat offers a handful of cruises, ranging from sunset sails to afternoon outings. Meanwhile, Traverse Tall Ship Company offers sailing excursions to nearby Manitou Island. Both companies also offer private charters.

For a more active sightseeing tour, consider hitting the water on a kayak. The popular River Outfitters rents kayaks and offers tours, including trips down the Boardman River and the unique KaBrew Tour, a kayak and brewery tour in one. Another kayak and brewery tour hybrid popular in the Traverse City area is Kayak, Bike & Brew , which takes visitors along TART trails, into the water and to participating microbrew pubs.

Prices vary depending on the tour you take. Nauti-Cat tours start at $35 per adult, while Traverse Tall Ship Sailing Company tours start at $42 per adult. For a River Outfitters tour, you can expect to pay $50 per person and for Kayak, Bike & Brew $69 per person. Hours vary by tour operator. For more information, visit each individual tour operator's website.

#1 Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is one of the few places in the world that visitors can see perched dunes. The lakeshore's towering dunes, which stretch 35 miles long Michigan 's eastern coast, were formed by glaciers. The slopes left behind by the glaciers turned into dunes as a result of Lake Michigan's tide pushing sand up onto the shore overtime. It's this unique phenomenon that garnered the park National Lakeshore status in 1970.

Today, Sleeping Bear Dunes is enjoyed by more than a million visitors per year, who flock to the park to experience the dunes and enjoy an eyeful of the lakeshore's vibrantly colored waters, forested hiking trails, beaches and bevy of outdoors activities. First-time visitors won't go wrong starting their journey with the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, a 7 1/2-mile drive that takes travelers through forested landscapes and along sand dunes to various overlook points. For hiking, you're spoiled with more than 100 miles of trails. For an easy trek, check out the Empire Bluff trail, a 1 1/2-mile round-trip hike that takes visitors directly to the edge of the dunes. The Pyramid Point trail is a more moderate, hilly option, while the 9-mile Alligator Hill trail takes hikers away from the dunes and higher up to provide sweeping views of the lake and the forests that flank it. If you're looking to do more than just hike, know that you can also bike, kayak, canoe and even scuba dive here. During the winter, the park is open to visitors for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, sledding and more.

Champagne with a view: The Nauti-Cat Sunset Cruise in Traverse City

We have written a LOT about Traverse City . But heck, we loved the place!

Here’s the last post on the beautiful Michigan region, about our Nauti-Cat Sunset Cruise.

Catamaran + sunset on Lake Michigan + champagne… Could there be a more perfect evening?

Nauti Cat sunset cruise Double-Barrelled Travel

Who would say no to enjoying this view with a glass of champagne in hand?

There’s something uplifting to the soul when watching the sun go down over the water. It’s even more beautiful if you’re taking in this view while on a boat, bobbing up and down in the middle of a picturesque bay like we were on the West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay.

And this is what we were doing as part of the Nauti-Cat Champagne Sunset Cruise, and it was absolute bliss.

Captain Chien Captain Shane Nauti Cat Cruise Double-Barrelled Travel

Captain Chien in his element, driving the catamaran on the Nauti-Cat Cruise

Captain Chien (pronounced ‘Shane’) was leading our expedition onto the water and was everything you’d imagine a Captain to be. He had a good sense of humour, long unrurly beard and hair to match.

All he needed was a tattoo of an anchor on his bicep, a peg leg and a parrot on his shoulder to make the image complete.

Unfortunately the evening wasn’t windy so we did more bobbing than shooting across the water’s surface, but it was relaxing nonetheless.

Ducks on Lake Michigan Double-Barrelled Travel

Ducks on waddling next to Lake Michigan – this photo was taken just before we boarded the Nauti-Cat

We had a bunch of characters on board with us. We chatted to one couple who said they were taking a break from looking after their son who has a brain tumour and two young children. A sad story that touched us and made us appreciate just how lucky we are.

They bought us each a drink and we clunked our plastic glasses and toasted the sunset.

A group of girls who seemed fresh out of college downed shots while the Captain Chien rang a large ship bell. The crowd on the boat smiled as the girls tried to drink shooters placed in carved holes marked out on a snowboard.

Nauti-Cat Cruise on Lake Michigan sunset Double-Barrelled Travel

The Nauti-Cat Sunset Cruise is a peaceful way to watch the sun go down

Someone got a little too rowdy and lost their flip flop overboard. As the captain turned around to try and find it, the woman’s partner lost all hope on ever rediscovering the shoe and threw the other flip flop into the lake. No sooner had he done this that the other shoe appeared.

The race was on and after 10 minutes of skilled manouvering on Captain Chien’s behalf, both flip flops were recovered and returned to the woman and her husband who was now blushing a deep crimson.

As Dave bought a further round of drinks (there’s a cash bar on board, hence the deborchery), we started chatting to a lesbian couple who were celebrating their 15 th anniversary together.

We toasted their happiness and I downed the drink Dave bought me – a potent yet tasty lime green punch.

Nauti-Cat Cruise on Lake Michigan Double-Barrelled Travel

Me and Dave playing on the nets of the Nauti-Cat

Feeling a little flushed from the alcohol, we jumped onto the nets of the catamaran and watched the waves splash below. Every now and again a large wave would get our backs wet, prompting squeals from all those lying in the space.

It was good fun.

With the fresh air (no salt in the air on Lake Michigan!) whipping our faces, we watched the sun go down as Chien’s shipmate handed out complimentary cups of champagne which we sipped contentedly.

Coming into dock, Chien fired a blank shot out of a musket at the back of the ship, to wake us all from their alcoholic slumber.

Ahoy indeed!

What you need to know:

Cost  –  An adult ticket for the Nauti-Cat Champagne Sunset Cruise costs $35 per person and includes a plastic cup of champagne.

When to go  –  We went in July and even then it could get chilly on the lake. So best to make it a summer event!

How to get there –  The catamaran leaves from the West Bay Beach Resort a resort by the Holiday Inn at 615 E. Front St. Traverse City, MI 49686. It’s best to get there by car and there’s free parking in the hotel’s parking lot.

Nauti-Cat Cruises provided us with two complimentary tickets, but as always our views and work are our own.

You don't need to own a boat to experience Traverse City from the water! Choose from one of several tour companies in the area, and you can spend a leisurely and memorable day cruising the sapphire blue waters of Grand Traverse Bay and Lake Michigan.

Embark on the  Nauti-Cat , whose 29’ beam allows plenty of space for passengers to relax on the nets or sightsee from the high and dry decks. Enjoy a sail on one of Traverse City's schooners including the Wind Dancer , the Tall Ship Manitou , or with the Inland Seas Education Association . All of these options are great for couples, small groups, families and friends.
