Most people know two things about Tiger Woods' yacht: It's big, and it is named Privacy . As you would expect from someone who names his boat Privacy , Woods has never revealed much information about his yacht. But we can put together a profile of the yacht based on other sources of public information about it.

How Big Is Woods' Yacht?

There are some basics about the Woods' yacht that are known to be true. For example, it's 155 feet long. That's a big boat for an individual owner, but it's nowhere near the size of the biggest yachts on the seas (which top 500 feet in length), and it's not even the biggest yacht owned by a golfer: Greg Norman has a yacht that is nearly 230 feet in length.

But hey, give him a break: Woods purchased the boat in 2004. He can always get a new one if a 155-foot, 2004-vintage yacht starts to feel a little cramped in size.

How Much Woods' Boat Cost to Buy

Woods bought his yacht from Christensen Shipyards in Vancouver, Wash., for a reported $20 million. According to Power and Motor Yacht magazine, Tiger's yacht is a "155 Trideck Motor Yacht known as Hull 026."

(Ironically, the shipbuilders of Woods' Privacy allegedly violated the golfer's privacy, according to a subsequent lawsuit that Woods filed against Christensen. Woods claimed in his suit that the shipbuilders, contrary to agreement, used Woods' name and photos to promote their business. MSNBC.com reported in 2006 that the suit was settled in Woods' favor for $1.6 million.)

Woods took delivery of his yacht in time for his wedding to Elin Nordegren in 2004; the couple spent their wedding night aboard the Privacy . The Palm Beach Post has reported that it was Nordegren, prior to the wedding, who made most of the interior decorating choices for the boat.

Tiger's yacht is docked at a marina in North Palm Beach, Fla. (It is believed that Tiger Woods' house in Jupiter Island, Fla., has enough room on its Intracoastal Waterway frontage to berth Woods' yacht, although, as far as we know, Woods has never docked it there.)

Amenities, Crew and More Details About Woods' Yacht

Power and Motor Yacht magazine has reported that the Privacy has a 12,000-gallon fuel tank that will take the boat 4,000 miles, with a top speed of 17 knots.

The yacht is reported to have 6,500 square feet of living and work space and a capacity to sleep up to 21 people in a master suite and five guest rooms. It includes, according to various sources, a gym and theater, and carries multiple watercraft such as jet skis. It takes a crew of nine to operate.

People magazine has reported of Woods' yacht that it "offers all the comforts of home and then some: a 2,000-gallon water tank, five guestrooms, a Jacuzzi, a gym, an elevator, a sky-lounge bar, a walk-in refrigerator, a deck dining area that seats 12, and two built-in wall safes."

That's a nice boat!

Tiger's Other Boat: The Solitude

Woods also owns another boat, a 61-footer named Solitude . The Solitude is a dive boat: a boat scuba diving enthusiasts use to to get out to their diving destinations. It's not a yacht, in other words, but it's a good guess that as dive boats go the Solitude is a mighty fine one. It was custom built, according to People Magazine , for a cost of from $2 million to $3 million, by a company named Garlington Landeweer Marine. According to the magazine, the Solitude is docked at Pirate’s Cove Resort & Marina, about 10 minutes from Woods' estate in Jupiter Island, Fla.

Tiger Woods Yacht: Everything You Want To Know

Ian Fortey

Tiger Woods is one of only three professional athletes in the world who has achieved billionaire status alongside LeBron James and Michael Jordan. As you can imagine, with that kind of cash comes the ability to buy a very nice boat and in 2004 he shelled out for an impressive toy. He purchased the yacht with his ex-wife just before their 2004 wedding and they apparently spent their wedding night on board, so it was something of a wedding gift to themselves.

What’s the Name of Tiger Woods’ Yacht?

does tiger woods still own a yacht

Woods chose to name his yacht Privacy, and you may know the story behind that one to a greater or lesser degree. When the yacht was commissioned back in 2004, Woods actually ended up suing the yacht maker Christensen. The company, at the time a fairly well known and reliable shipyard, had been using Wood’s name and images of the yacht and Woods himself in their promotional materials. So, basically, trying to get business off of his name and the work they did for him.

Woods sued the company and by 2006 the case was settled out of court. The yacht makers had nothing to say on the record regarding the case, the yacht or Woods after that.

In addition to this scandal, Woods has been constantly in the eye of the media and the paparazzi for most of his career, including some well known scandals that happened even after he bought the yacht, so the Privacy name was well chosen.

How Big is Tiger Woods Yacht?

does tiger woods still own a yacht

Tiger Woods’ yacht is a respectable 155 feet in length with a 29.5 foot beam. It features three decks and while it’s nowhere near one of the largest yachts in the world , it’s actually one of the biggest celebrity-owned yachts on the water. Most of the larger vessels out there are owned by industrialists, royalty and other titans in the business world.

How Fast is Tiger Woods Yacht?

Word is that Privacy has a cruising speed of about 16 knots with a top speed of 18 knots. Not a speed demon by any means, but no one buys a 155-foot long yacht for racing. It’s powered by two 1,800-horsepower MTU engines and features a 12,000 gallon fuel tank. The yacht has a range of 4,000 nautical miles.

How Much Did Tiger Woods’ Yacht Cost?

In 2004, Woods is said to have dropped about $20 million on his super yacht. Again, not nearly the most expensive yacht in the world but clearly quite an expensive vessel in its own right. Because it’s such a large vessel it requires a crew of 9 to keep it operating. That, along with the fuel costs for that big 12,000 gallon tank and various other costs of operation means it costs Woods an additional $2 million or so per year to keep the boat running.

What’s the Interior of Tiger Woods Yacht Like?

With a name like Privacy it’s no surprise that there aren’t a ton of details about Woods’ yacht but, that said, it’s been nearly 20 years so it’s been around long enough that we do know a good deal of what’s going on inside the ship. He once gave the Golf Channel a tour and they were able to snap some still images that give an idea of what it’s like inside which you can check out in the video above.

The boat was designed to accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 staterooms. There’s an additional four cabins that can handle the crew members. The VIP stateroom is aft and there are two queen size cabin amidships as well as a twin cabin. All told there’s said to be about 6,500 square feet of living space on board. The upper deck of the vessel is also an observation deck for those looking to just relax and enjoy the view.

does tiger woods still own a yacht

Woods has been known to live on the yacht when he’s golfing, rather than staying at hotels like some other golfers. He first lived on board during the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot Golf Club. Later, he was aboard Privacy during the 2018 US Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island in New York, and then again during the 2019 PGA Championship.

There’s a gym as you’d probably expect for the yacht of an athlete. It’s said to house a treadmill, exercise bike, and free weights. There’s also a jacuzzi tub big enough for eight people at a time. In addition, there’s a movie theater on board as well as a well-stocked bar.

The dining area is large and opulent, as you’d expect, and there is room for 12 guests to enjoy a meal. With so many people eating you’d need a well-stocked kitchen and it seems like the yacht has a walk-in fridge in the galley so there’s little worry about not having enough on board to keep everyone fed.

When it comes to having fun, the yacht has a few water toys available for Woods and his guests. There are three jet skis on board as well as a pair of ocean kayaks. When you reach land there are even two Vespa scooters you can take out. There’s also scuba gear and apparently an entire decompression chamber. You can also fill up the air tanks on board as well.

As for the finer details, that stuff is still kind of up in the air as Woods has not let many people on board to photograph anything in the years he’s owned the vessel. Some of those who have been aboard describe the interior as being pretty classical as far as yachts go. Features are done in cherry woodwork and there’s supposed to be a staircase connecting the three decks with transparent steps and a cherry handrail. Of course, if you’re not inclined to be doing any stair climbing on a yacht, there’s an elevator on board as well.

does tiger woods still own a yacht

The main floor is designed with an open concept to take advantage of the flow of the whole vessel and, of course, ensure that passengers get to enjoy the most of not just the features but the views while they’re out on the water.

Alongside that 12,000 gallon fuel tank, there’s a 2,000 gallon water tank to keep freshwater on board for crew and passengers. Two 99-kilowatt Northern Lights generators provide electrical power to keep the lights on for everyone.

Details on any security features are definitely scant, but it’s been said there are at least two safes on board for passengers to store valuables if need be.

What is the Solitude?

You may have heard that Woods has a boat named Solitude as opposed to Privacy. Well, as far as we can tell, he owns both. Solitude was purchased back in 2010 and the rumored price was $3 million. Solitude was bought as a dive boat as opposed to a luxury yacht that Woods planned to be living on while he’s golfing in coastal cities.

As we mentioned above, the Privacy has a decompression chamber, scuba gear and more scuba-related amenities. Woods is an avid scuba diver as was his ex-wife. He even learned free-diving and spearfishing. The dive boat seems to have been purchased to more specifically focus on the hobby for his ex, with whom he is still friends.

The Bottom Line

Tiger Woods’ yacht called Privacy cost him around $20 million back in 2004. It’s a 155-foot vessel with room for 10 passengers and 9 crew including an interior VIP stateroom. It features a good deal of fun water toys like Sea Doos, two ocean kayaks, and scuba gear for the scuba diving fans, as well as a full twin cabin gym, a jacuzzi, a sweeping staircase, and more. Woods still makes frequent use of the yacht and even lives on board when he’s working various golf tours and opens.

Does Tiger Woods need a bigger boat? His yacht Privacy is dwarfed by others in Bahamas

Tiger Woods traveled by yacht to the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas this week.

Yes, that would be the $20 million luxury vessel dubbed Privacy.

Woods, who bought the boat in 2004, has taken it around the world, including the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in New York.

Now, it's parked in the Bahamas, which is not surprising.

What might be surprising is how this 6,500-square-foot craft is dwarfed by other boats in dock. The one on the far left is Tiger's.

The Golf Channel's Dan Hicks quipped that it "might be time for Tiger to trade that in" when comparing Privacy to other absurdly large and much more expensive watercraft.

TIGER: Woods turned down millions by declining to play in controversial Saudi event

OPINION: For a fee, Phil Mickelson sells his conscience to play in Saudi International

Notah Begay, a longtime friend of Woods who has been aboard Privacy, joked, "I'm from New Mexico. I don't see many of these things."

Privacy sleeps between 10 and 12, has a crew of nine and reportedly costs $2 million a year to operate.

It includes:

  • Large deck bar
  • Eight-person Jacuzzi
  • Scuba-tank fill station
  • Inflatable decompression chamber
  • Cherry woodwork in the interior
  • VIP stateroom with two queen size cabin amidships and a twin cabin
  • Gym with a treadmill, exercise bike and free weights
  • Three-person elevator

Privacy has a 4,000-mile range thanks to a 12,000-gallon fuel tank, and can travel at a maximum speed of 17 knots.

Tiger Woods' $20M Yacht Named "Privacy" Is Chock-Full of Awesome Amenities

Back in 2004, 82-time PGA Tour event winner Tiger Woods decided to make a sizable purchase on a 155-foot yacht, which he named "Privacy." It cost him a cool $20 million, but he's certainly gotten his use out of it. Honestly, Tiger Woods has been one of the most successful golfers in the world, and with his net worth of $800 million today, it probably didn't hurt his wallet too much.

Most recently last year, he sent the massive superyacht to Oyster Bay in Long Island, New York, just two weeks before the 2019 PGA Championship, so that when it was over, he would have a luxurious ride back to his home in Jupiter Island, Florida.

Tiger Woods' yacht is pretty epic, as you might expect from the price tag, so let's check out some of the details about this spectacular vessel.

A Look at Tiger Woods' Yacht

View this post on Instagram A post shared by L World Yachting Group (@lworldyachting)

Let's start off by talking about the fact that this beauty has three floors with a three-person elevator to easily move you from the main deck to the observation deck. Because of its sheer size, it comes equipped with a pair of 1,800-horsepower engines and a huge tank capable of holding 12,000 gallons of fuel. Although they are thirsty, these engines can take the vessel to a top speed of 17 knots.

There are nine bedrooms total, however, four of them are used by the nine crew members that work onboard the luxury yacht. Of course, Woods' boat features tons of entertainment and amenities for the guests, including a bar, a VIP stateroom, a full gym with all the free weights you'll need, and even an eight-person jacuzzi. If you're looking for a real adventure, you'll even find a decompression chamber for scuba diving. Even with all this, there's still additional room to store all of Woods' toys like ocean kayaks, Sea-Doo jet skis, a dinghy, and some Vespa scooters. There's pretty much no cooler way to show up to a golf club or the U.S. Open than this thing.

If I were to guess, I'd assume Tiger spent a good amount of time on his yacht Privacy during this whole COVID-19 pandemic, since it really doesn't get more ideal than this. Woods has won four different PGA championships, and he's been proving his talent on the course for many years, so next time you're at a major golf event, just look for the 155-foot yacht, and you'll know the legend has arrived.

Inside Tiger Woods’s Luxe Real Estate Portfolio

By Joyce Chen

Tiger Woods is a decorated professional golfer who has won 15 major championships.

All products featured on Architectural Digest are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Tiger Woods’s talent on the golf course has been unstoppable ever since he first broke onto the scene in the late 1990s. Along with his professional success came an appetite for luxury real estate. The pro athlete has come a long way since growing up in the Orange County suburb Cypress, California; he has now owned properties in California, Florida, the Bahamas , and Canada. At one point, it was even rumored that Woods owned a custom-built home on a 62-acre private island in Sweden, but that story has since been debunked. This rumor likely started because the island was reportedly purchased by a Swedish businessman in 2006 for the explicit purpose of being developed into a retreat for Woods and his then wife Elin Nordegren. (The couple split in 2010 after Woods was found to have numerous extramarital affairs, and the deal was never finalized.)

Here, we’ve rounded up some of the places that the golfer has called home over the years.

Woods’s first big purchase was also the beginning of his expansive real estate portfolio in Florida. He paid an undisclosed amount for the 8,000-square-foot Spanish-style home in the exclusive Isleworth community in Windermere, Florida, just as his stardom was on the rise. A big draw for the athlete was the privacy the place offered. “Once we get inside the gates of Isleworth, you can take a deep sigh of relief,” Woods told the Orlando Sentinel in 2006. “... There’s a no-autograph policy, no pictures, no nothing. We all just mingle.” Woods lived there alone, and then with Nordegren after the pair got married in 2004, until their divorce in 2010. The home is now perhaps better known as the site of Woods’s infamous 2009 car crash shortly after reports of his infidelity surfaced. Woods later sold the two-story waterfront home to fellow golf pro Bubba Watson for $2.2 million in 2013.

Woods stayed close to his California roots with the purchase of a $3 million vaguely Mediterranean-style condo in Newport Beach. The two-story pad measured around 2,000 square feet and featured three bedrooms. Importantly, there were views of the ocean and Catalina Island from just about every room, with a spacious patio and balcony to boot. The pro golfer listed the home at a loss —$2.49 million—in 2012, but it’s unclear when or whether the property actually sold, and for what price.

Also in 2004, Woods shelled out $20 million for a 155-foot yacht he cheekily named Privacy . The behemoth boasts three floors, including an observation deck, with five bedrooms that can easily sleep up to 10 guests. (According to Golf , it takes nine crew members to man the yacht, with the crew occupying separate living quarters.) Among the ship’s many amenities are a jacuzzi, a gym, a wet bar, and a decompression chamber for scuba diving. Woods still owns the yacht, and has been known to sleep aboard it before major championships. When not out at sea, it is typically docked in Oyster Bay, Long Island, or at his home on Jupiter Island, Florida. Fun fact: Woods also owns a $54 million private jet —a Gulfstream G550—that can seat 18, and which he also uses to shuttle himself between tournaments.

Woods and Nordegren quietly snapped up property in a gated community in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for an undisclosed amount (lots there were listed for between $1.2 million and $4.5 million). Details of their vacation home are sparse, though it’s believed that the couple sought out land in the Cowboy State for a few different reasons, including its proximity to excellent golf courses and fly fishing, as well as easily accessible slopes for Nordegren to ski on. It is unclear whether either of them still own this property.

Woods and Nordegren then shelled out a whopping $40 million for a 12-acre property on Jupiter Island, Florida, where neighbors include Bill Gates, Celine Dion, and fellow golfer Greg Norman. At the time, there was an existing 9,000-square-foot mansion on the grounds, but the couple opted to tear down the original mansion in favor of erecting their own —a $54 million mega-mansion measuring 9,700 square feet with four additional structures including a golf studio, a guesthouse, a garage, and a boathouse with two private docks. Other amenities include a diving pool, a lap pool, a tennis court, and an oxygen therapy room. Construction of the impressive home was completed in 2010, and Woods moved into the home in 2011 following his split with Nordegren. (She and their two children moved to a new beachfront home in Palm Beach County.) The athlete still owns this property and considers it his primary residence.

Ever the filial son, Woods also made sure to look out for both his parents. He reportedly bought his mother two adjacent lots in Jupiter, Florida, for around $2.4 million, with plans to spend an additional $2.6 million to build on the land. He also went in on another home in Windermere, Florida, with his father for $1.31 million. Not much else is known about these properties.

Woods next threw his hat in the ring to help fund the construction of an ultra-exclusive resort in the Bahamas, alongside other celebrity investors like Justin Timberlake, Ernie Els, and Joe Lewis. The luxury resort community is known as Albany, and is set on 600 acres on the island New Providence, with nine marina-front condominium buildings, each boasting a different architectural style. (One, for instance, was designed by renowned architect Bjarke Ingels to look like a cube.) Amenities include a golf course, naturally, as well as several swimming pools, an equestrian center, a water sports center, tennis courts, and a 15,000-square-foot fitness center with yoga and Pilates studios.

Tiger Woods' yacht is reportedly moored in the Bahamas, prompting speculation he will speak in public for the first time since his car crash.

The yacht, named Privacy, reportedly left Florida at the start of the month according to Marine Traffic , and is currently moored in Albany.

Obviously, we don't know who is on board. Locals have reportedly been taking pictures of it ahead of the Hero World Challenge.

Woods has reportedly done one media engagement with Monster Energy. And he's hitting golf balls again.

He is the tournament host this week and will command all the attention if he turns up.

Woods has reportedly sent his yacht to tournament locations before and then flown there.

Examples of this include the 2018 U.S. Open and a year later at the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black.

It would be strange for Woods to send his yacht all the way there and not attend.

The players are excited. Justin Thomas posted on social media how much he loved seeing Woods swing again.

The PGA Tour have not yet confirmed any public media duties for Woods.

Tiger Woods’s yacht, Privacy , has a fanbase of its own. The famous 6,500-square-foot masterpiece has the golf world’s love, just like its owner. Woods even went on his honeymoon in the same yacht. Fans are surely filled with an estimation of whether Privacy will steal the show at the 2023 Hero World Challenge or not.

Is Tiger Woods’s yacht set to steal the show yet again?

Woods’ famous honeymoon yacht has caught the attention of the golf world at the 2023 Hero World Challenge. The last time Privacy caught this much attention was back in the 2019 edition of the Hero World Challenge, where the 82X PGAT winner finished in fourth place. Privacy is definitely a show stealer and has definitely proven the same time and again.

This yacht holds a special place not only in the fans’ hearts but in the golfer’s heart as well. The reason for that special is not only the yacht’s magnificence but also because of a special memory. The famous luxury yacht played a special part in his wedding with his ex-wife, Elin Nordegren , back in 2004. In fact, the golf world legend has been rumored to have been practicing at his luxurious residence in Albany, Bahamas.

The billionaire’s famous yacht has the eyes of the larger world of golf set on it. Only time will tell if Privacy will end up stealing the center stage at the 2023 Hero World Challenge yet again or not. The renewed interest within the golf world about the chances of getting a glance at Privacy ‘s magnanimity is proof of the fandom it has accrued due to its lavish nature.

Golf enthusiasts could grab the opportunity to book a boat tour in the Bahamas, and could see Privacy parked in the docks.

Woods’s dreamy yacht, valued at a whopping $20 million, has been stationed in Albany, Bahamas for years. It would be there during the famous tournament as well. This truly will be a sight to watch for his fans. It has been a tradition for many fans to take a boat just to get a glimpse of this masterpiece stationed in the Bahamas during the Hero World Challenge. Tiger Woods’ yacht is on the move. Here’s why that *might* hint at where he’s playing next

Privacy is headed up the East Coast.

Tiger Woods is not in the field for this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas, and at this point we don’t know when we’ll see the 15-time major winner next.

But we now may have a hint. Or at least something fun to speculate on.

Woods’ yacht, Privacy , left its Palm Beach port on Tuesday morning and is bound for St. Simons Island, Ga., according to MarineTraffic.com . The yacht’s movement was first reported by Riggs at Barstool Sports . It’s notable because next week’s RBC Heritage at Harbor Town is on Hilton Head Island, a two-hour drive north of St. Simons Island, or another quick yacht cruise up the coast. Docking on St. Simons Island could be a pit stop — or nothing at all.

Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg, has not immediately responded to GOLF.com’s request for comment regarding Woods’ next planned start. The RBC Heritage’s tournament director, Steve Wilmot, told GOLF.com, “Sorry to say we have not heard one way or another if he is planning to play.”

Up the road from Bethpage, Tiger Woods’s superyacht is drawing galleries of its own

Despite Woods’ yacht leaving its dock, it’s unlikely he’s on board. In the past, Woods has sent Privacy near tournament locations, then flown in later, usually staying on the boat during the week. He last did this at the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills and the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage Black, both of which were on Long Island.

Usually, the RBC Heritage is not a tournament Woods would consider entering. He’s played it just once, back in 1999 when it was the MCI Classic (he tied for 18th). It’s also often the week after the Masters, which never works well for Woods’ scheduling. But things are different this year after the PGA Tour’s 12-week pause due to the coronavirus. Suddenly tournaments that didn’t always bring in big names are loaded. Colonial has 101 Tour winners in the field and, for the first time in the OWGR era, the top-five players in the world. Even Rory McIlroy , who has played Harbour Town just once before, is teeing it up there next week.

Will we see Woods at Harbour Town, or is this yacht cruise unrelated to his next start? We’ll have to wait to find out.

Tiger Woods Is Back at Valhalla, Where Half a Lifetime Ago He Won a Duel for the Ages

Pat forde | 12 hours ago.

Tiger Woods walked in a birdie putt in a playoff against Bob May in the 2000 PGA Championship.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — He’s exactly twice the age now that he was then, a middle-aged man playing in the lengthening twilight shadow of his own greatness. The baggy pants and billowy shirt he wore while famously finger-pointing a birdie putt into the hole here in 2000 have been replaced by tighter clothes, layers of muscle and layers of scar tissue. Tiger Woods is back at Valhalla Golf Club, half a lifetime after one of the great performances of his career.

Back then, Woods was 24 years old and at the absolute peak of his powers, on his way to a Tiger Slam of the four major championships. Today he is an achy 48, hoping this week to play 72 holes in a major other than the Masters for the first time since 2020.

Yet even if Woods is a diminished threat to win, he remains the golfer everyone most wants to see. By the weekend our attention likely will be diverted elsewhere in this 106th PGA, but on a practice-round Monday, Woods was the only golfer who drew thousands along for his walk across this rolling bluegrass course east of Louisville, Ky.

This particular demographic of fans probably doesn't give a rip about LIV Golf or the internal angst of the PGA Tour. The people just want to be near the aging legend as he walked among them—perhaps for the last time at this course.

“You the man, bro,” a Louisville Metro Police officer called out as Tiger walked from the 12th green to 13th tee Monday. The cop exhaled and said out loud, but seemingly to himself, “O.K., I got that out of the way.” This seemed like a box the cop needed to check.

Woods toured the front nine at Valhalla on Sunday. He canvassed the back nine Monday — by himself, no playing partners, though ESPN analyst Andy North joined Woods for the 18th hole. That followed a practice round over the course last week.

Woods was dressed in his new apparel line, Sun Day Red, after 27 years with Nike.

Woods smiled blandly at the gallery as fans shouted comments, all of which he has certainly heard a thousand times before. He occasionally waved in acknowledgement of applause. He signed autographs for 3 1/2 minutes after his practice was complete. But mostly he was here to work, gathering intel on a course he knows but has changed over the years.

Woods flipped out his yardage book—with a Stanford cover—on every hole Monday. He took copious notes, especially on the greens. Assuredly he had some Valhalla observations from the old days written into the book, comparing then versus now.

The greatest change from 2000 to ’24 is Woods himself, of course. Triumph, scandal, a major car wreck and the mundane passing of time have all left their imprint on the world’s most interesting athlete of the last 30 years.

Woods arrived at Valhalla in 2000 fully deified, seemingly on an inevitable track toward becoming the greatest golfer in history. He’d won four majors to that point, with Jack Nicklaus’s record 18 looming in the distance looking easily surmountable.

He was coming off jaw-dropping victories at historic venues—a perfect U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, a blistering British Open at St. Andrews. Combined margin of victory in those two majors was a staggering 23 shots. Everyone was certain this PGA would be major No. 5.

Everyone was right. But it was far more difficult than envisioned, a dramatic playoff victory laced with pressure.

The man who pushed Tiger Woods to the brink of stunning defeat was a nobody . Bob May never won a PGA Tour event and only came close once, on a steamy August weekend at Valhalla against the hottest golfer in the world.

It took 75 holes for Woods to beat May, not shaking free of the journeyman until chasing in a 25-foot birdie on No. 16, the first hole of a three-hole playoff. Before that, May played the best golf of his life from the second round on, putting a pair of 66s on the board on Friday and Saturday to earn a pairing with Tiger on Sunday.

Tiger Woods Sports Illustrated cover 2000, after winning PGA Championship.

Woods led by a shot when they went to the first tee. Dressed in Sunday red, the expectation was that he would quickly put May in the rearview mirror and roll to victory as easily as he had at Pebble and St. Andrews. Instead, the two men delivered a duel that lives in PGA lore.

May birdied the second hole and Woods bogeyed, flipping the leaderboard. Then May birdied No. 4, taking a two-shot lead. Woods tied it up heading to the back nine.

May birdied No. 11 to retake the lead and continued to apply withering pressure with one dart after another into the greens. Woods kept answering, rolling in a short birdie putt on 17 to tie. Heading to the par-5 finishing hole, a staggering upset was in play.

May dropped a 15-footer for birdie, putting Woods in a do-or-die position. Tiger was Tiger in the heat of the moment, dropping a six-footer to send the match into a three-hole playoff. The two men were 18 under par, five shots clear of their closest pursuer.

Woods birdied the 16th, then held on through the last two holes. It was his third straight major victory, and he would complete the Tiger Slam in April 2001 by winning the Masters. There seemed to be no stopping him.

Things happened that stopped him, most of them self-inflicted. Woods reached 14 major victories in 2008, winning the U.S. Open in a playoff on a broken leg, then was felled by scandal in his personal life. He was in the field for the last PGA here at Valhalla in 2014, which was won by Rory McIlroy. Woods failed to make the cut in that appearance.

He woke up the echoes of greatness at the Masters in 2019, then suffered severe leg injuries in a single-car accident in 2021. He’s come back to play periodically, but hasn’t been a factor since then. He might never be again.

Half a lifetime ago, Tiger Woods gave Valhalla its signature moment as a major championship venue. That chapter, at the peak of his career, is over. But he still pulls fans to the gallery ropes when he walks by, hoping for one more glimpse of greatness.

Tiger Woods is still deciding whether he has time to be Ryder Cup captain

Pga championship golf.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Tiger Woods brings a lot of uncertainty to Valhalla for the PGA Championship . Some of that has to do with his achy body. And some of that involved the Ryder Cup.

The PGA of America still has not settled on a captain for the 2025 matches at Bethpage Black , with Woods as the most obvious candidate. Seth Waugh, CEO of the PGA of America, had said he would be speaking to Woods.

“We're still talking,” Woods said Tuesday. “There’s nothing that has been confirmed yet. We’re still working on what that might look like — also whether or not I have the time to do it.”

The PGA of America typically announces the Ryder Cup captain well before the Masters of the preceding year. Zach Johnson was announced in February 2022 for last year's Ryder Cup.

Woods, who has teed it up only twice this year going into the PGA Championship, is keeping plenty busy off the golf course. He was appointed to the PGA Tour board last summer and has been a central voice in meetings. Woods also is on the committee that is meeting with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia about becoming a minority investor.

The U.S. Ryder Cup captain, whoever that is, has a lot of promoting to do, which includes a “one year out” event at Bethpage Black in September.

“I need to feel that I can give the amount of time that it deserves,” said Woods, who won his second U.S. Open at Bethpage Black in 2002.

Woods had mixed memories when he returned to Valhalla . He played a practice round late last week and was on the course the past two days. Heavy thunderstorms shut the course for a few hours on Tuesday.

There was 2000, where he made what he still considers the most pressure-filled putt of his career. He had a fabulous duel with unheralded Bob May, ending with Woods having to make a 6-foot birdie putt on the last hole to force a playoff.

And there was 2014, when he was trying to recover from the first of four back surgeries. Woods had to withdraw the previous week at Firestone, and he didn't come close to making the cut at Valhalla.

“At that time I was maybe one back procedure into it. Now it’s a hell of a lot more than that number,” he said. “Back is now fused, as you know. Yeah, coming into 2014, I wasn’t feeling very good. But I’m always going to feel soreness and stiffness in my back, but that’s OK. Just need other body parts to start feeling better.”

He also needs more than two good rounds. Woods set a Masters record this year by making the cut for the 24th consecutive time , but he followed with an 82 in the third round and wound up in last place among those who made the cut .

He has not played since then.

“I still feel that I can win golf tournaments. I still feel I can hit the shots and still feel like I still have my hand around the greens and I can putt,” Woods said. “I just need to do it for all four days, not like I did at Augusta for only two.”

As for his other job, Woods didn't reveal much about discussions with PIF or any of the obstacles in the way of the sport somehow being reunited. He described negotiations as fluid, with plenty of work ahead.

“It may not be giant steps, but we're making steps,” he said.

He also said he was surprised by the resignation Monday of Jimmy Dunne , a PGA Tour board member and key architect of the June 6 framework agreement with the Saudis .

Dunne said that with the balance now tilting toward players over business leaders on the PGA Tour board, he felt his input was “superfluous.” Woods was asked if golfers were best suited to handle business dealings of the PGA Tour.

“Well, the PGA Tour is for the players and by the players. So, we have an influence and there’s roles for the player directors and there’s roles for the independents,” he said. "We’re trying to make the PGA Tour the best it can be day in and day out.

“That’s one of the reasons why we have arguments and we have disagreements, but we want to do what’s best for everyone in golf and the tour.”

Tiger Woods announces his Nike partnership has ended: ‘There will certainly be another chapter’

Dec 17, 2023; Orlando, Florida, USA; Tiger Woods waits to play his shot from the first tee during the PNC Championship at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club. Mandatory Credit: Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

One of the most iconic partnerships in modern golf has ended. Tiger Woods announced Monday he is no longer a Nike brand ambassador and teased that another endorsement deal is coming.

“Over 27 years ago, I was fortunate to start a partnership with one of the most iconic brands in the world,” Woods said. “The days since have been filled with so many amazing moments and memories, if I started naming them, I could go on forever. (Nike co-founder) Phil Knight’s passion and vision brought this Nike and Nike Golf partnership together and I want to personally thank him, along with the Nike employees and incredible athletes I have had the pleasure of working with along the way.”

pic.twitter.com/at0tSskmRm — Tiger Woods (@TigerWoods) January 8, 2024

Woods added: “People will ask if there is another chapter. Yes, there will certainly be another chapter.”

Woods also cryptically indicated in the statement that he’ll play in the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles next month, leading to speculation his apparel situation will be resolved by then.

Nike first signed Woods to a five-year, $40 million deal in 1996, the year he turned pro at age 20. He and Nike became synonymous as Woods quickly became the face of golf and won countless tournaments while wearing his classic red Nike polo on Sundays. Nike eventually launched an apparel line with Woods that featured its logo and a TW logo.

After Nike closed its golf equipment line in 2016, Woods switched to using TaylorMade clubs and Bridgestone balls but continued to wear Nike apparel.

Woods signed multiple deals with Nike throughout his career, with his most recent one being a reported 10-year agreement worth around $200 million in 2013.

Woods is latest golfer to leave Nike

Given that Nike made its name in the golf world largely on the back of Woods, his departure stands out. It’s about as seismic as it gets in the golf apparel world — who knows how many red polos with a swoosh are worn every weekend at every golf course in America, but it’s a lot. But Woods is not the only golfer to leave Nike recently — Jason Day is now with Malbon, an up-and-coming brand that has drawn attention already for the … roominess … in Day’s pants at The Sentry.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Nike (@nike)

Still, other notable Nike golf athletes like Scottie Scheffler and Tony Finau were wearing the apparel over the weekend. Rory McIlroy and Nelly Korda remain Nike golf ambassadors. What does this all mean? It means something, though it’s not immediately clear what that is yet. — Hugh Kellenberger, senior managing golf editor
