MarineTraffic is a ship-tracking and maritime information service that was founded by Dimitris Lekkas in 2007. It is widely recognised as the world’s most comprehensive maritime database and the service is able to boast more than six million unique monthly users , as well as more than one million registered account holders. Essentially, the service was set up by Lekkas because he had an existing interest in computers and ship spotting and had become interested in the practical uses of AIS vessel tracking technology. Little did he know, he was about to create one of the most important transport databases in the world . The MarineTraffic service is available to use for free , although a paid version also exists, adding more advanced features. MarineTraffic makes use of AIS vessel tracking technology to record 800 million vessel locations each month, while its database also includes information on ships, such as when and where they were built.

How Does MarineTraffic Work?

The MarineTraffic service makes use of AIS tracking technology to provide information about the identification, course, speed and current location of vessels. From there, locations can be overlaid onto Google Maps , and, as a result, users can use the service to track the movements of ships and other vessels in real-time.

Additionally, some information surrounding ship locations is self-reported by those aboard. This information is then used to provide a more accurate and up-to-date live map of vessel locations.

Aside from tracking vessel positions, MarineTraffic also provides background information on vessels, such as where they were built, when they were built, their IMO (International Maritime Organisation) number, how much they weigh and even photographs of them. Much of this information is submitted voluntarily by the community members.

What is AIS Technology?

AIS stands for ‘ automatic identification system ‘ and refers to a tracking system that is used on ships and VesselFinder . Since 2004, it has been compulsory for all passenger ships of any size, and all international voyaging ships with a gross tonnage of 300 or more, to be fitted with an AIS transponder, which is able to transmit and receive AIS data.

Voge Master vessel in full drive on the ocean - MMSI no. 256089000

The AIS transponder transmits GPS information , as well as a host of additional data, which is then received by AIS receiving stations. The MarineTraffic service makes use of more than 3,000 of these stations , positioned all around the world, allowing the service to track positions, identify vessels, plot courses and even monitor speed.

In many ways, the MarineTraffic AIS technology can be considered similar to the flight radar technology used by services like Flightradar24 , in order to track aircraft. In that particular case, the AIS technology is replaced by ADS-B technology, which works in a similar way and is again assisted by volunteers, with information being picked up by ADS-B receivers or receiving stations instead of AIS receivers.

Other information on the site

While the information on the site largely revolves around picking up these AIS signals for tracking purposes, background information about the vessels, photographs of ships and an abundance of other information is also added and moderated by volunteers, who make up the core of the MarineTraffic community.

Meanwhile, in addition to the automatic location tracking that is provided through the use of AIS technology, vessel positions are also often self-reported to MarineTraffic. This can help to make tracking even more accurate and is stored as historical data within the database . It can subsequently be referred to for statistical analysis, emergency response purposes, accident investigation, and even to assess the effects of weather on speed.

Who Uses MarineTraffic?

An online ship tracking service may seem like the sort of platform that would only appeal to the most dedicated ship spotters , and it may not surprise you to learn that the site’s founder, Dimitris Lekkas, places himself within this category. However, in reality, the service has a much wider audience than that.

Real-time Ship Tracking Map

In fact, in the years since its initial launch, MarineTraffic has grown into an important tool for both business and research purposes , while the platform is also used by governments, trade organisations and emergency services. Of course, it remains a valuable tool for maritime professionals and hobbyists as well .

The core user group includes maritime professionals, ship spotters and other hobbyists . Many of those within this group subscribe to the paid version of the service and dedicate their free time to voluntarily help the community, upload photographs and moderate content uploaded to the site.

Business and Trade

Another key use for the MarineTraffic service is related to business and trade. Its primary use here is to track the progress of cargo being shipped overseas. Furthermore, the website includes its own business directory, helping to put buyers and suppliers in contact with one another.

MarineTraffic also enjoys popularity with maritime researchers and those interested in AIS technology. Indeed, the service has set up the MarineTraffic Research Network, which is designed to assist academic institutions, research foundations and individual maritime researchers . Interested parties can even apply for special academic accounts.

Security and Emergency Services

One of the more surprising ways in which MarineTraffic is used is as a tool to assist emergency services with situational awareness and accident investigation . Moreover, the platform has also been used by some national governments for security purposes because it allows them to monitor activity in and around their coastal areas.

Other Users

Aside from the groups mentioned, MarineTraffic has also grown into an important resource for journalists and media organisations , who have used it to inform reports on ISIS and the migrant crisis. In addition, there are also casual users who may utilise MarineTraffic to track friends or family members aboard a ship or vessel.

How Do You Use MarineTraffic?

If all of this seems complicated and overly technical so far, the good news is that the actual MarineTraffic service itself is very easy to use , even for those with no technical knowledge of AIS technology whatsoever. Additionally, the core features can be accessed from a range of different platforms . The main website is, in itself, the service’s web platform and from there, users will be able to search for, identify and track vessels. However, in addition to this, two separate web apps exist. The first of these integrates with the services seen on the web platform, while the other is designed for boaters and hobbyists.

Web Platform

The main MarineTraffic web platform features a Live Map showing the positions of vessels. Users can click and drag the map to move around the globe, highlight vessels on the map to find out more information, or use the ‘+’ an ‘-‘ symbols to zoom in or out, while the left-hand side of the screen has a range of more advanced options.

Interactive MarineTraffic Map: Live Vessel Tracking, Advanced Features & User Options

At the top, the magnifying glass symbol opens up the search function, allowing users to search for either a vessel or sea port , or search for a specific map location. Meanwhile, the filter symbol allows users to filter the vessels displayed on the map based on ship type, capacity, current status and more.

Finally, the symbol showing three boats is the ‘My Fleets’ option. By accessing this menu, users have the option to create a fleet and add ships to it, making it easier to track multiple vessels at the same time.

A basic MarineTraffic account is free and can be used for an indefinite period. However, MarineTraffic is categorised as a ‘freemium’ service because a paid premium account opens up a range of extra features. Among these are the ability to create larger fleets, use custom fleet icons, access wind forecasts and view a 30-day voyage history.

Mobile Apps

Aside from the main web platform, the MarineTraffic service also has two separate mobile apps , which are available for Android and iOS devices. The first of these, MarineTraffic Ship Positions is similar to the web platform, but is more mobile-friendly than using the website on a mobile browser.

All account holders can make use of the app, including those with a basic free account, those with a paid premium account, or those with a special research or academic account, but the app itself is not free, and a small fee is required to download it. The features available within the app will depend on the account type held by the user.

Further to the main MarineTraffic mobile app the platform also has a separate mobile app, known as MarineTraffic OnCourse . This app is intended for those interested in sailing or yachting or those who are in charge of larger vessels, and provides a more advanced range of features. For example, the app allows boaters to self-report their location from within the app and easily upload photos and other information about their vessel.

Luxury Yachts: Design Takes a New Track

Simutech Solution Corp. uses realistic simulation to craft a better boat

While it’s widely recognized that HTC smartphones, Garmin GPS devices and a sweeping array of big-brand laptops are staples of the Made in Taiwan effort, it’s a lesser-known fact that luxury yachts (those measuring 80 - 120 ft. are a booming business in Taiwan. Producing high-quality boats at comparatively low prices, Taiwan’s luxury yacht industry reached a peak in 1987, exporting 1,755 vessels for an export value of more than $190m. However, rising labor costs and the appreciation of the Taiwanese dollar took its toll over the years, and the industry had to weather its share of storms. However, Taiwan’s luxury yacht sector is back on course, with the country surpassing Germany as the sixth largest yacht maker last year, according to yachting magazine ShowBoats International. With an E-Composites report pegging growth for the global recreational yacht market at an annual rate of 7% between 2005 and 2012, the Taiwanese luxury yacht sector has been looking to shore up its position and head off international competition from traditional sources, as well as Chineses. To do so, the country’s Economic Planning and Development committee has identified luxury yacht production as an emerging core industry and a variety of efforts are underway to advance growth in this area. One such plan is the construction of a dedicated yacht-building precinct as part of the Kaohsiung Port City Reconstruction project. On the technology and manufacturing front, industry players are promoting the use of computer-aided engineering (CAE) and advanced simulation to foster innovation among Taiwanese yacht makers while helping them decrease overall cycle times. “While many yacht companies, shipyards and naval architects have adopted DassaultSystemes’ CATIA application in the last three years, the value of numerical simulation and the concept of digital design evaluation are still not broadly promoted in Taiwan,” said Ray Tsai, technical director of Simutech Solution Corp., which provides consulting services for DassaultSystèmes’ SIMULIA application. “Lots of yacht companies don’t know there is a powerful tool that could immensely improve their design with shorter cycles and better systems integration.” Employing a Total Design Package Tsai, together with colleagues Rey-Yie Fong of Tiny Machine and Mechanics Laboratory, and Chia-Chuan O and Yu-Chieh Lin, both deputy engineers with the Ship and Ocean Industries R&D Center in Taipei, have mapped out a route intended to demonstrate just what’s possible with SIMULIA’s realistic simulation toolkit.  Discussions with Taiwanese yacht manufacturers revealed a glaring hole in the development process: Most of them outsource the upfront design of their boats to foreign partners. “Often they don’t have the tools or the expertise to design a structure from scratch, let alone optimize a hull structure with composite layouts, or even modify subsequent concepts to increase performance,” said Tsai. With mounting global competition around styling and price, it makes sense that Taiwanese yacht makers could command a greater edge by bringing more of the design process in-house. Manufacturers are increasingly under the gun to respond to customers’ demands as quickly as possible while still keeping costs low. They also need to strike that proverbial balance between aesthetically pleasing style and delivering a range of competitive onboard features and performance. Technical challenges in the areas of design proficiency, manufacturing cost and quality control have long been barriers for Taiwanese companies looking to maintain their competitive strength against rivals. Simulation technology provides yacht makers with a deeper understanding of their designs from the start, allowing them to iterate incrementally far earlier in the cycle while also tracing problems during every stage of the development process. “We wanted to help them move iterating cycles from the manufacturing stage to the design stage so that the performance criteria could be evaluated earlier when it costs less to modify,” Tsai said. To showcase the powers of digital simulation, Fong chose three critical elements of yacht design that were universally creating challenges for Taiwanese manufacturers: Composite structure layup, ventilation and thermal analysis, and wave impact transient analysis. “These three areas were most frequently encountered by designers, manufacturers, and customers,” Tsai said. “They were struggling with how to achieve the optimal intrinsic strength and stiffness in their designs along with cabin ventilation efficiency and navigating the tradeoffs around static structure performance and dynamic wave slamming impact. Sometimes the key to orchestrating a design leap is there, but hiding within another configuration. What we wanted to do is to dig it out with different examinations.” The partners set out to prove their case, taking advantage of the extensive SIMULIA application portfolio based on Abaqus finite element analysis (FEA). Abaqus/Standard, together with Simulayt, was tapped for composite structure layup analysis and manufacturing process management; Abaqus CFD (computation fluid dynamics) came into play for ventilation and thermal analysis; and Abaqus/Explicit was used for Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) analysis, which is central to slamming wave impact simulation. Having an integrated interface between the CAD tool—in this case, DassaultSystèmes’ CATIA—and the different CAE functions that leverage Abaqus and Simulayt is critical, Tsai said, so users don’t have to change tools or deal with cumbersome data import procedures. “The concept of integrating structural analysis within the design process benefits complex design projects immensely,” he said. “We are able to import geometry from CATIA and use Simulayt with the composite modeler for Abaqus [CMA] to analyze composite layups. We were also able to reuse the same models for CFD simulation, and material properties and conditions could be shared between models without duplication.” Fong chose a 70-ft. Monte Carlo Yacht to serve as a benchmark for the simulations since it is the median size for Taiwan’s yacht industry and because the specifications of the model mapped pretty closely to the proprietary specifications of most manufacturers. Modeling Strategies Set Sail with Composites Applying simulation to the modeling and manufacture of structures made from fiber-reinforced materials is one of the areas where computer-aided engineering (CAE) in luxury yacht design can shine.  With all eyes on fuel efficiency and performance, use of composite materials is exploding in the aerospace and automotive sectors, in part because of strict sensitivity to weight demands. While yacht design shares many of the same engineering techniques as the two other sectors, for example, numerical methods, materials selection, system integration and multi-body mechanics—in Taiwan the concept of lightweight structure design is far less mature. Abaqus CMA provides flexible modeling strategies for quick evaluation of geometry and meshing at both the preliminary and final design stages. With its precise geometry definition, CATIA Composites comes into play at the detailed design stage, helping to optimize design for manufacturability. CATIA generates the composite layup patterns, which can then be assigned to Abaqus with specified material properties and fiber orientation. An interface connects CATIA Composite and Abaqus CMA with automatic data transfer, eliminating the possibility of typos and tedious property assignments layer by layer. The Simulayt tool helps designers and engineers simulate the forces on a composite structure during manufacturing, rounding out the analysis by predicting plant-floor issues that can be mitigated earlier in the development cycle and helping to meet production timeframes within budget. Channeling the Sea Breezes Tsai’s team also applied simulation tools to the design challenge around yacht ventilation. The goal of the exercise was to understand the conduction-convection heat transfer phenomenon, allowing an engineering team to zero in on the optimal ventilation system specification and vent arrangement that would minimize the compressor requirement. “The challenge is to decide how to arrange the inlet and outlet vents to provide a uniform cooling status in all the cabins,” Lin and O said. Passive vents use a convection effort to circulate air and they work well on nice breezy days, but on hot, still days, they are not as effective. Active vents include a powered fan and apply a conduction effect. “We set a target that we wanted to unify the temperature distribution and utilize the convection effect to transfer cool air from the upper deck to the lower deck as much as possible,” Lin said. “The CFD visualizations presented a clear image of the air flow along the cabins so we could come up with a concept to improve the arrangement of the vents and design a more comfortable yacht.” Ensuring Hull Integrity in Rough Seas The third area where simulation was applied was evaluating the performance of a yacht design under impact from waves, or other scenarios that might test its buoyancy and maneuverability. “Planning a motor yacht or high speed cruiser design needs to take into account the dynamic lifting effect, which implies that the center of buoyancy and center of floating will change with increasing speed,” Fong said. “The subtle balance between center of gravity, center of buoyancy, and center of floating is crucial. It’s tricky to keep the yacht in an evenly keeled condition with a traditional approach.” Using Abaqus CEL, the team was able to simulate the yacht design’s transient and non-linear varying response to wave impact conditions as well as different turning maneuvers. Reaction force, reaction moment, displacement, velocity and acceleration are recorded on the mass center of the yacht to examine the dynamic performance over time. Slamming contact pressure on the hull is also output to determine the structure loading under transient impact. More widespread use of these advanced simulation methodologies will help Taiwanese yacht makers have a better chance of sailing past the competition, Tsai feels. “Simulation can help them innovate designs faster while keeping costs in check,” he said. “To build a faster, lighter, and more luxurious yacht is a challenge, trying to find that compromise between different design considerations. We believe Taiwanese yacht makers will be more competitive in the global market if they are capable of handling more of the design by themselves.”

Concert promoter Live Nation is getting into the ultra-luxury cruise business — see what it'll be like on weeklong superyacht sailings starting at $3,000 a person

  • Live Nation's Vibee is getting into the ultra-luxury cruise business.
  • The music event curator says it'll charter two superyachts for three weeklong Croatia cruises this summer.
  • Like other vacation operators, Vibee says it's seen increasing demand for cruise and yacht-based trips.

Insider Today

Forget concerts — Live Nation wants music fans to start going on yacht vacations .

In 2023 and amid a boom in experiential travel , the entertainment company established Vibee, a music-based event curation arm. Less than a year later, Vibee has already executed affairs like a weekend Bahamas getaway headlined by singer Lionel Richie and a three-day Cabo San Lucas, Mexico party featuring DJ Tiësto.

Now, it's moving off-land and to the high seas with its new segment: Vibee Yacht Club.

This summer, Vibee says it'll charter two superyachts for three weeklong Croatia itineraries that are set to be, of course, centered on music.

Vibee is capitalizing on yet another increasingly popular concept: themed cruises.

track luxury yachts

Themed cruises can vary vastly, from Star Trek-centered sailings to itineraries helmed by famous comedians. And as of late, many of these niche voyages have been selling out faster than ever before.

Themed cruise operator Sixthman's November 2023 hip-hop itinerary sold out in less than five days with no publicly announced lineup.

Similarly, Vibee's first cruise, the 2023 EDSea — a wordplay on the electronic dance music festival Electric Daisy Carnival, or EDC — was fully booked in three days, again with an undisclosed lineup.

Armed with EDSea’s success, Vibee wants to dive deeper into the cruise segment — this time with a luxurious spin.

track luxury yachts

"We see the desire for cruise and yacht experiences continuing to rise," Harvey Cohen, president of Vibee, told Business Insider, echoing sentiments of the cruise industry's booming demand.

And not just the mass-market players: Over the last year, luxury cruise lines have also seen a rise in interest.

In its fourth-quarter earnings report from February 2024, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said its two high-end brands, Oceania and Regent Seven Seas, had both seen "strong demand."

The latter had launched its latest $517.9 million luxury ship a few months prior, complete with caviar and a $6 million art collection.

Luxury cruises and superyachts aren’t known to be super-affordable.

track luxury yachts

Vibee says it's chartering the 141-foot-long Lupus Mare and nearly 161-foot-long Prestige for its three yacht sailings.

Vibee Yacht Club's cheapest option starts at $3,100 per person for a two-person cabin. Comparatively, EDSea's 2024 itinerary starts at $1,405 per person for a double occupancy interior cabin.

Yet, it could be a bargain for some superyacht fans: Weeklong charters for Lupus Mare start at about $71,000 a week, according to YachtCharterFleet.

Everything is better on a yacht. Champagne? Tastes better on a yacht. Cruises in general? Better on a yacht.

track luxury yachts

Going to an international music festival? Well, Vibee thinks it would be better to stay on a yacht than in a hotel.

On July 13, the first itinerary would start on day two of Ultra Europe, a popular three-day electronic dance music festival in Split, Croatia.

track luxury yachts

Following the event, the two yachts would sail to three Croatian islands before concluding in Hvar, Croatia. Along the way, the itinerary would include daytime swims, a sunset winery visit, and several parties (day and night).

Unsurprisingly, Vibee expects the itinerary to draw in younger travelers, specifically Gen Zers and millennials.

Lupus Mare is set to be chartered for two more itineraries: “Rock the Med” and “Marafiki on the Adriatic.”

track luxury yachts

A three-person cabin for both starts at $3,500 per person.

On Rock the Med, the week is set to begin with VIP tickets to a Lenny Kravitz show at the historic Pula Arena.

Afterward, it would sail to Croatian destinations with an itinerary that would include beach excursions and clubs.

Marafiki on the Adriatic isn’t centered on a single music event.

track luxury yachts

Instead, the roundtrip Split itinerary would feature on-board musical performances, daily yoga, "cultural outings," and, of course, beach clubs.

A bonus trip to Sonus Festival, a five-day rave, is an optional add-on.

Like a typical luxury cruise, travelers would have preorganized water taxis, chefs to prepare daily breakfasts and lunches, and all the yacht amenities.

track luxury yachts

The 20-cabin, 40-guest Prestige flexes indulgences like an indoor lounge, a hot tub, and a sundeck with plenty of beds.

Meanwhile, the 15-cabin, 34-guest Lupus Mare has comforts like a sauna and gym.

track luxury yachts

Travelers could wind down in the yacht's movie theater or hot tub. Or, they could take a slide into the water.

It’s no surprise Vibee is going the more sumptuous route with its itinerary-focused yacht concept.

track luxury yachts

" Revenge travel " might as well be known as "regular travel" at this point: People have continued to spend big on extravagant vacations, especially on luxury small cruise ships and trips planned around experiences and adventures.

Both are niches Vibee is trying to carve out for itself: Looking ahead, the new brand is already planning more music and sea-based vacations, Cohen told Business Insider.

A luxury charter is your ticket to those places you’ve always dreamed of – and a few you never even considered. And here are some of our favourite off-the-beaten-track places and some of the amazing superyachts to charter there.

Galapagos

Adventurous mega yacht owners have created an entirely new opportunity for charterers to visit areas far from the beaten path. Several yacht owners have sent their luxury sailing and motor yachts to literally circle the globe and, since the owners aren't aboard for every destination, the opportunity is ripe for charterers to get aboard for segments of the adventure.

Family on charter

Traveling on board a private crewed charter yacht, you have the luxury of a one-of-a-kind hotel that can take you anywhere. Here are some of the special superyachts currently available in these distant places that we recommend.

Built for extended expeditions, the Dreamer is equipped with a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system comprised of two Cummins engines, one electric motor, and 10 directional thrusters. During long voyages, the vessel cruises just below the waterline, with a fixed dorsal providing fresh air to the interior and the genset while expelling the exhaust. Kozloff says this submerged cruising position results in exceptional range, decent speeds, and smooth conditions. The sub has an estimated cruising speed of 6 knots, a maximum speed of 10 knots, and a go-anywhere range of 6,000 miles.

In addition, the Dreamer can dive to 328 feet and travel up to 100 miles on silent, electric power. The sub can also remain firmly planted on the ocean floor for up to seven days, with the onboard batteries providing power for the week.

Explorers will traverse the seas in the lap of luxury, too. The plush living quarters are akin to that of a superyacht . The two distinctive decks offer approximately 1,500 square feet of space for lounging and entertaining. Guests can easily travel between decks using the watertight elevator or ladder tube.

The sub remains a concept at this stage but Walt Disney once said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

Are Donald Trump's Luxury Plane, Yacht, Other Luxury Assets at Risk?

Donald Trump faces a Monday deadline to post bond while he appeals Judge Arthur Engoron 's ruling that the former president has to pay roughly $454 million in penalties for fraud.

If he doesn't come up with the money, New York Attorney General Letitia James may begin taking steps to freeze his bank accounts in order to deliver the cash or other forms of payments to her New York office.

Engoron ruled that Trump and top executives at The Trump Organization inflated the value of his assets to obtain more favorable terms from lenders and insurers. The lawsuit initially sought $250 million in damages, but James later increased the amount to $370 million, plus interest.

Trump's legal team said paying the full civil fraud penalty would be "a practical impossibility," leading to speculation that James could soon start seizing the president's properties or that he may be forced to sell off some of his real estate empire to pay the fine.

Donald Trump

However, rather than seizing properties, Trump may see luxury items like his private jet and yacht taken by authorities.

Trump has a Boeing 757 private jet that he paid $100 million for in 2011 and owns a yacht worth $115 million. Thomas Gift. who heads the Centre on U.S. Politics at University College London, told Newsweek that they would be "a lot easier to liquidate" than his properties.

Newsweek contacted a representative for Trump by email for comment.

"Trump's luxury possessions would almost certainly prove a lot easier to liquidate than some of his marquee properties," Gift said. "Whether the sum total of those items would be sufficient to raise enough funds that Trump owes the court is unclear.

"What is obvious is that if Trump is forced to sell Mar-a-Lago, especially at a fire sale price, it will create an even greater impression in the minds of MAGA voters that Trump's political enemies are out to get him."

Todd Landman, a professor of political science in the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham, told Newsweek it is more likely liquid assets will be seized first.

"The order of priority as I understand it is to seize as much liquid asset as possible, followed by physical assets," he said. "As we know, much of the real estate is either partially controlled by Trump or is leveraged such that any seizure would need to factor in existing loans and penalties.

"Seizure of items such as planes and luxury cars would also need to factor in whether these are owned outright or have loans behind them. Even if they are owned outright, seizure of these kind of assets would not add up to the significant amount of money required by the judgment."

Christopher Phelps, a professor of modern American history at the University of Nottingham, said real estate would be preferable.

"Cars, planes, yachts and such property are depreciating assets," he told Newsweek. "As most consumers recognize, the minute you drive a car off the showroom floor, it loses considerable value. So the authorities would much prefer real estate, which tends over time to hold its value and appreciate in value, despite cycles.

"With many billionaires, rare artwork would be a possibility, but let's just say that Trump is not universally renowned as a man of aesthetic taste. The paintings he has amassed are apparently heavy on portraits of himself."

Ahead of the deadline, Trump took to Truth Social to say that Engoron and James should not be allowed to take his assets, repeating his assertion that he had "done nothing wrong." But he has yet to announce how his fine will be paid or what alternative action he may take.
