Being Wally

Wally stands for avant garde, restless development and the conviction that form should follow function. Since 1994, these principles have spurred us to create some of the most emblematic yachts afloat. Our only rule is that there are no rules.

Every inch the little sister of the successful wallypower58, the new wallypower50 exhibits the same puristic lines. Planar surfaces, flush decks and the incomparable glass-and-carbon dome over the cockpit are the signatures of the range. Drop down wings enlarge the aft deck by a full 6 square metres to offer epic entertaining space, while the aft platform brings the water closer than ever.

WHY  Wally Hermes Yachts

WHY Wally-Hermès Yachts all images courtesy Hermès

WHY Wally-Hermès Yachts is the new company created by french luxury brand Hermès and monaco based yacht maker Wally, dedicated to a new lifestyle of living on the sea.

designing a boat with a new concept is not an utopia. at every turn the yacht offers maximum space, durability and cutting-edge technologies. the exchange with Wally and Hermès was rooted deeply in terms of know how and sharing the same philosophy of this new concept.

the boat is contained in a triangular hull measuring 58m x 38m. there is no superstructure. the initial idea of this hull was confirmed by the ramform hull which they discovered, redesigned and adapted to fit the concept of the wheel house that emerges from the silhouette of the ship. the interior of the yacht is fitted out with water resistant buffalo leather using the calpinage technique.

the yacht which took years in the making has been tested in gotebourg, sweden, in a specialised tank testing facility, to see how it would perform in big seas. the outcome is that, in full swell, the bow moves a tiny bit and the stern stays completely still. anchored, the boat creates a totally flat surface behind it, like an olympic-size pool where you can swim in total peace. on the bow, there’s a seawater pool 25 metres long that follows the curve of the bow.

the environmental and ecological advantages are a strong point of the boat WHY. different sources of energy are managed by a central computer.

the yacht is powered using a diesel electric engine. a surface of the photovolatic panels which measure approximately 900 square meters provide the solar electricity generated which covers part of what is needed to subsist the boat.

an encounter, … the concept was developed by president and CEO of Wally luca bassani antivari, artistic director of Hermès, pierre-alexis dumas and design director of Hermès gabriele pezzini.

a special WHY team has been built to reply to any needs.

http://www.why-yachts.com

‘everybody’s dream is to live on an island, in complete freedom, without constraint, with the independence that only self-sufficiency can provide. a piece of land with a beautiful villa partly fulfils this aspiration because it is static. a yacht offers the freedom to move, but does not have the space of a property. WHY has it all: space, stability, movement, independence, peace. WHY goes even further. this revolutionary concept of the moving island is developed with the latest and most advanced sustainable technologies, recycling thermal energy, as well as any organic and inorganic waste. the architecture of the whole project fits perfectly in the environment – there are no excesses, nothing is superfluous, the impact on the sea is minimum. a new and unique way to live on the sea while caring about it, protecting it, and loving it. all this has always been my dream too, and when I met pierre-alexis dumas I realised that this dream could come true thanks to the common values and ethical principles we share.’ luca bassani antivari, president and CEO of Wally

‘from the invention of the compass to block capitals, from the rudder to the first steps on the moon, man discovers and pursues his dreams. with its feet on the ground and its head in the stars, Hermès, since its creation in 1837, has grown, generation after generation, through innovative projects, executed with high standards and an artisan spirit.I have always thrived on the dreams of great visionaries like magellan, jules verne, saint-exupéry and paul klee. like theirs, the path of Hermès is to pursue its dreams… excelling itself, learning, pushing ever further the quest for excellence and the celebration of beauty in the world. a world we must protect. today, Hermès steps into the marine world with Wally. we quickly recognised our common values, the values of well-made, singular, functional, refined and elegant objects. this encounter was just what we needed to inspire us to brave the open seas. together, with luca bassani antivari, we hope to open a new path, to offera new lifestyle that is different, serene, contemplative and respectful of the environment, moving slowly on the water, combining the pleasure of sailing and absolute comfort. Wally Hermès Yachts – WHY – is the union of our dreams, the green path that carries us away in its wake…’  pierre-alexis dumas, artistic director of Hermès

‘over the course of your discussions coasting against the current, how did you come up with the idea of a triangular hull?’

pierre-alexis dumas: my inspiration is still the greek caïque, roomy, generous and slow. this eulogy to slowness is demonstrated in such a magnificent way. a pared-down craft with nothing superfluous about it. we needed a stable hull in order to hold the sea comfortably. the idea of a triangular hull, which doesn’t exist in the world of leisure boating, came from the utilitarian merchant marine.

luca bassani antivari: I came across a picture of a supertanker while reading a professional magazine. a cable-handling vessel, used in the geo-mining and seismological industry in the north sea, invented by a norwegian naval engineer, roar ramde, and fully patented. there was nothing new about this ship. it had been in use for twenty-five years. as soon as I saw it, I picked up the phone and called my consultant naval architect, mauro sculli. he looked in the RINA, the italian naval classification registry: never seen or heard of before in the world of yachting! it was perfect. we had our hull. we bought exclusive rights to the concept, patented strictly for yachting.

pierre-alexis dumas: WHY addresses the very real problem of consumption, which is today exacerbated by the global context. we provide an answer in a field where clients are responsible for setting an example, embracing a new ethic. what this market needs is a boat designed with the environment in mind. this new way of moving on water must give way to a new way of managing energy, its sources and uses, how to recycle it, etc. the same goes for the choice of materials; we have to limit the effect on the environment.

gabriele pezzini: we didn’t design a boat, we gave shape to an idea. the sea is one of the last spaces where people can indulge in absolute freedom. deciding to live on the sea means rethinking everything that’s been done before. you need to start from scratch! for example, we provide a real jogging track inspired by coastal paths running around the ship. above all, we had to transpose and translate functions into forms, and vice versa, by merging the viewpoints of Hermès and Wally.

‘what are the environmental and ecological advantages of WHY ?’

pierre-alexis dumas: ours requires less power at cruising speed than a boat of equal size. its diesel-electric motorisation is the most efficient motorisation out there today, and the surface of the photovoltaic panels, almost 900 square metres, covers part of what’s needed to subsist on the boat! we’re also looking into a telescopic wind-turbine system and a retractable mast with a computer-operated sail measuring over 200 square metres that will produce at least 30 % of the energy used to propel the boat.

A new art of living on the sea is born

WHY, Wally Hermès Yacht

A new art of living on the sea is born

WHY , Wally Hermès Yachts , today unveils a revolutionary approach to cruising in motor yachts with the presentation of a full size model of its first born, an innovative 58metre-long 38metre-wide yacht, in Ancona's shipyard.

Wally Hermès Yachts: a joint-venture WHY is the result of the joint-venture signed in June 2008 between Hermès and Wally , to develop a new type of motor yacht redefining the art of living on the sea. The iconic Parisian house and the iconic Monaco yacht brand formed an equal partnership whereby each company is fully involved in all aspects of the conception and design of each project.

Pierre-Alexis Dumas, Artistic Director of Hermèssays : “When we met, in autumn 2007, Luca Bassani Antivari, President of Wally had thought about asking Hermès to accessorise the interior of one of his boats. I was impressed by the daring of his projects. My instinct was to get on board with him and go and seek out new territories in yacht design, but I had no interest in speed.”

Luca Bassani Antivari explains: “What I’ve always liked about Hermès, aside from its intrinsic quality, is its audacity and radicalism; its desire to go beyond trends, to make no compromises and to maintain the authenticity of the house. Wally shares the same values, ‘Hermès-on-Land’, ‘Wally-on-Sea’: inevitably our paths had to cross.”

WHY 58x38 The common values of the two brands have led to a first yacht that offers an unparalleled living space at sea. WHY was developed to give life to this concept assembling a team of dedicated talents in design, engineering, and naval architecture.

Then the tried and tested Norwegian Ramform hull characterised by exceptional and unprecedented stability and volume and spottedby Luca Bassani Antivari, revealed itself as the ideal choice to be adapted to the WHY 58x38 project.

Following this unique adaptation, the decks and the interiors were developed in accordance with the fundamental credo of WHY, 'form-equals-function'. Thus were born other innovations in the world of mega yachts: patios generously flooding the interior with natural light, photovoltaic panels on the glass hull sides, as well as on the roof opening, like Venetian blinds, a 25 metre-long forward end swimming pool, and a 36-metre aftdeck beach.

WHY 58x38 offers comfort, privacy, stability, space, independence and sustainability.

Sustainability “We are very interested in creating a yacht that will have a low environmental impact”, says Pierre-Alexis Dumas. “Its relationship with the sea must berespectful and easy. WHY intends to offer a new way of moving over water by creating an innovative way of managing and recycling its sources and uses of energy.”

“If you want to go totally ecological, it’s only sailing yacht. The reality is that today, 90% of the market is powerboats, echoes Luca Bassani Antivari. Our aim is to reduce diesel consumption per year and per yacht: 20 to 30% for propulsion and 40 to 50% for generation.”

Thanks to its specific hull, WHY 58x38 requires less power at cruising speed than a boat of equal size. Its diesel-electric propulsion is the most efficient motorisation today, and the surface of the photovoltaic panels, almost 900square metres, covers most of the boat’s auxiliary system needs.

WHY Research and Development plan to optimize this project’s energy consumption by improving the isolation of the yacht and the heat recovery of its engines, and is also investigating the latest wind energy production and wind propulsion system technologies.

In comparison to a yacht of the same size, WHY 58x38 has been conceived to reduce drastically its energy consumption, saving up to 200tons of diesel per year.

The WHY R&D program includes tank testing for hull stability in the SSPA facilities in Sweden, and the construction of a full-scale mock-up in order to allow the design team to fine tune the living areas correctly in accordance with the hull’s unique shape.

The WHY 58X38 yacht looks very unfamiliar but it remains on a human scale. Space is the greatest luxury on the sea, but I believe the new luxury will be the time to enjoy it”, concludes Pierre-Alexis Dumas.

Wally Hermès Yachts (‘WHY’): A Yacht Like No Other

Wally Hermès Yachts (‘WHY’): A Yacht Like No Other

Revolutionary. Audacious. Radical. Three adjectives that scarcely begin to describe the 58m-long, 38m-wide yacht sitting as a full-size model in Ancona’s shipyard. This is the first-born offspring of WHY – Wally Hermès Yachts – a joint venture between the Monaco yacht brand and the iconic Parisian house, and one which aims to redefine the art of living on the sea.

Pierre-Alexis Dumas, Artistic Director of Hermès, explains that Wally’s President and CEO, Luca Bassani Antivari, had thought of asking Hermès to accessorise the interior of one of his yachts when they met in 2007. “I was impressed by the daring of his projects,” says Dumas. “My instinct was to get on board with him and go and seek out new territories in yacht design, but I had no interest in speed.”

With a cruising speed of 12 knots, and accommodation for 12 guests and 20 crew in living areas of a staggering 3400sqm, the new concept is not about ultimate performance but about stability and space. It uses the tried-and-tested Norwegian Ramform hull – ideal for the WHY 58x38 project. The hull was developed to provide patios which flood the interior with natural light, photovoltaic panels on the glass hull sides and on the roof opening (“like Venetian blinds”), a 25m-long forward end swimming pool and a 36m aft deck beach.

Both Dumas and Antivari are emphatic that environmental issues are of key concern to the project. The WHY 58x38 requires less power at cruising speed than a more traditional boat of equal size. Its diesel-electric propulsion is highly efficient, while the 900sqm of photovoltaic panels provide for most of the boat’s auxiliary systems. In comparison to a yacht of this size, the WHY 58x38 should save up to 200 tons of diesel per year.

“The WHY 58x38 yacht looks very unfamiliar but it remains on a human scale,” concludes Pierre-Alexis Dumas. “Space is the greatest luxury on the sea, but I believe the new luxury will be the time to enjoy it.”

Hermes and Wally Building a Revolutionary Luxury Yacht

Published October 7, 2009 · Updated January 10, 2014

WHY yacht By Hermes & Wally

French fashion giant Hermes, who is known around the world for its luxury Birkin handbags and silk scarves, is now branching out into another luxury product line … revolutionary luxury yachts.

Luxury clothing designer Hermes and Monaco based yacht maker Wally are collaborating together and developing the ultimate luxury yacht.

The yacht by Wally-Hermes Yachts, will be named “WHY” for short. It will be the first yacht for Hermes who have previously helped design a luxury helicopter and a collection of smart cars.

Naval architect Mauro Sculii said: “The advantage of traveling on the WHY boat is that you take your own space with you, your house, your island so you are not in a hurry to arrive, you just have the pleasure of traveling and being on board. That’s the novelty. Usually a boat is just a means of transport.”

The WHY yacht will come equipped with the latest high tech amenities, gorgeous modern design and spacious living dimensions.

The two companies unveiled a real-size model of the 38-metre (125ft) wide vessel late last month in Ancona, Italy.

WHY yacht - Hermes & Wally (back)

Gabriele Pezzini, Design Director of Hermes said: “The designers wanted to totally rethink the relationship between man and sea.”

What makes WHY so unique is its size. Instead of a traditional tapered stern, the WHY has a sheared off appearance. This design gives access to a naturally-lit spa, which includes a traditional Turkish Hammam.

Luca Bassini, founder of design company Wally said: “I think the best part of this boat is the stern. It’s not like the usual stern of a boat, it’s more like the real beach of an island; a beach which is protected from the wind and the waves, where you can really relax.”

WHY Wally-Hermés Yacht

Why not? Wally - Hermés believes in a new way of navigating slowly on the sea with genuine environmental and ecological values.

The WHY yacht concept was created through a partnership between high fashion house, Hermés and yacht builder, Wally. The living space, built on three decks is intended to meet the human needs of space, light and shade with advanced sustainable technologies. The 58 metre-long 38 metre-wide, pared-down yacht is powered by a diesel electric engine that produces solar electricity to manage the boat.

“We didn’t design a boat, we gave shape to an idea – there are no excesses, nothing is superfluous, the impact on the sea is minimum .” Pierre-Alexis Dumas, Artistic Director of Hermès.

There is something fabulous about indulging in absolute freedom with this life of quietness and gala affair. One caveat: cutbacks and timidity is positively, my order of the day.

Wally Hermès Yachts

Meet the yacht that doubles as an island

One of the many stresses of being a billionaire is the difficulty in choosing between purchasing a yacht or an island .

Happily, designers this week unveiled plans for a "moving island" that renders the conundrum redundant.

Designs for the WHY 58x38 were unveiled at the Abu Dhabi yacht show this week.

The vessel is the result of a collaboration between Monaco yacht brand Wally and Parisian fashion house Hermès.

"Everybody's dream is to live on an island, in complete freedom, without constraint, with the independence that only self sufficiency can provide," said Wally's president, Luca Bassani Antivari .

"A piece of land with a beautiful villa partly fulfils this aspiration because it is static. A yacht offers the freedom to move, but does not have the space of a property. WHY has it all."

The motor yacht is, as the name suggests, 58 metres long and 38 metres wide, providing a total guest surface area of 3,400sq metres, and weighs in at 2,400 tonnes.

It boasts a maximum speed of 14 knots, and a price tag, when built, of $160 million. Upon completion the yacht will be capable of catering for up to 12 guests, enjoying 280sq metres of space each – perfect for an intimate getaway.

Its dozen passengers, attended by a crew of 20, will be able to congregate across three floors, consisting of the " master space ", " guest space " and " common space ".

The 200sq metre master area covers the entire third floor, while the guest space, incorporating five bedrooms, spans the second tier.

The common space, at the bottom of the ship, has a 25-metre swimming pool, cinema, music room, dining room, and what the designers call "a perfect 30m beach".

Although work is yet to begin on the WHY its website does boast a snazzy promotional video – featuring a scale wooden model .

"I love the sea," said Antivari, "and so I also love all of the different ways to enjoy the sea, whether by sail boat or by motorboat.

"Being an extremist, when I sail, I like to be both comfortable and sail at speed. If I'm on a motorboat then I want it to be the fastest. If I'm on a comfortable boat, then it has to be the most comfortable."

In addition to comfort, the craft's creators are keen that their yacht is environmentally friendly, and anticipate the yacht generating 500kw of solar energy a day through 900sq metres of photovoltaic panels covering its roof and hull.

According to the designers, the WHY should use far less energy than a yacht of the same size, saving up to 200 tonnes of diesel per year. Frugal fuel consumption will enable it to cross the Atlantic four times without refuelling, according to the designers.

Re-Imagining the Super-Yacht: Wally Hermès Yachts

by twistedsifter

WHY (Wally Hermès Yachts) is the stunning result of a joint venture signed in June of 2008, between the ultra-expensive luxury brand Hermès, and one of the world’s premiere yacht builders, Wally. Certainly one of the most radical boat designs I’ve ever seen, WHY defies all convention. Costing an estimated $150.8 million usd, we can only hope a splashy billionaire takes the plunge and orders one for production. Anyone have Roman Abromovich’s number handy?

WHEN PIERRE MET LUCA

Pierre-Alexis Dumas, Artistic Director of Hermès recalls: “When we met in autumn 2007, Luca Bassani Antivari, President of Wally, had thought about asking Hermès to accessorise the interior of one of his boats.

THE WHY 58×38

– Spotted by Luca Bassani Antivari, the tried and tested Norwegian Ramform hull, characterised by exceptional and unprecedented stability and volume revealed itself as the ideal choice to be adapted to the WHY 58×38 project

– Following this unique adaptation, the decks and the interiors were developed in accordance with the fundamental credo of WHY, ‘form-equals-function’

– This credo spurned numerous innovations in the world of mega yachts: patios generously flooding the interior with natural light, photovoltaic panels on the glass hull sides, a roof opening like Venetian blinds, a 25 meter-long (82 feet) forward end swimming pool, and a 36-meter (118 feet) aft deck beach

– The interior of the yacht is fitted out with water resistant buffalo leather using the calpinage technique

– The yacht, which took years in the making, has been tested in Gotebourg, Sweden, in a specialized tank testing facility, to see how it would perform in big seas. The outcome is that, in full swell, the bow moves a tiny bit and the stern stays completely still

– Anchored, the boat creates a totally flat surface behind it, like an olympic-size pool where you can swim in total peace

SUSTAINABILITY

– “We are very interested in creating a yacht that will have a low environmental impact”, says Pierre-Alexis Dumas. “Its relationship with the sea must be respectful and easy. WHY intends to offer a new way of moving over water by creating an innovative way of managing and recycling its sources and uses of energy”

PARIS — Hermès International has ended its joint venture with Monaco-based yacht maker Wally to produce an extra-wide, environmentally sustainable yacht, the companies said.

Hermès said the decision had been taken after joint venture HW launched technical studies in the run-up to constructing the vessel.

“The complexity of this phase and the mastery of nautical engineering it requires have made it necessary to entrust the running of the project to a single master builder,” the company said. Wally took over the construction of the vessel on an exclusive basis on March 1, it added.

A spokeswoman for Wally said the project would go ahead without the luxury group. “Hermès did not want to go on with further investments, and there was an internal decision on their part [to pull out],” she explained.

The name of the yacht, WHY, has been changed from Wally Hermès Yacht to Wally Hybrid Yacht, the spokeswoman added.

The ultraluxurious vessel is being proposed in two sizes: the first, at 58 meters (190 feet) long and 38 meters (125 feet) wide, will cost an estimated 100 million euros, or $134.1 million at current exchange rates, to purchase, while the second, at 37 meters (121 feet) long and 24 meters (79 feet) wide, will cost around 40 million euros, or $53.6 million. Wally has contacted a U.S. shipyard to obtain an original price quote in U.S. dollars.

The company said it had received several inquiries for the yacht, but would not be confirming any orders until it has completed meetings with shipyards capable of accommodating the unusually wide structure.

Hermès will collect a percentage on all sales of the vessel until 2020, the two firms said.

French luxury clothing designer Hermes, and Monaco-based yacht maker Wally have teamed up to create Wally-Hermes Yachts (WHY), a 38-meter-wide luxury yacht.

The team presented a model of the vessel in Ancona, Italy. WHY is a colossal luxury yacht measuring 58 meters in length.

WHY features a 25-meter interior swimming pool, three decks and a 36-meter artificial beach along the back. The beach part is designed to be the yacht’s widest.

The roof and sides of the vessel will be covered with solar panels and this is intended to save at least 200 tons of diesel fuel a year. A waste management system is also installed in the vessel, which is capable of holding both organic and inorganic waste.

WHY is the first yacht of Hermes who is better known for Birkin handbags and printed silk scarves.

Hermes to exit luxury yacht joint venture with Wally

By B. Roberts

Hermes is exiting a luxury yacht joint venture with shipbuilder Wally, stating that they are not experienced enough to complete the superyacht project according to news on Reuters.

The two partners had unveiled a full-sized model of their mega yacht, “WHY” - Wally Hermes Yacht, and had a stand at the Adu Dhabi Yacht Show 2010 last month.

The statement issued by Hermes explained “We are currently in the phase of carrying out the project, which is technically complex and which requires on-the-spot decisions.”

"It seemed a good idea to us to have only one decision-maker and we naturally decided to hand the reins over to Wally."

“Although Hermes also works on helicopter design in partnership with EADS, it does not have comparable ship design experience” said Hermes CEO Patrick Thomas on Thursday.

Hermes, which is famous for its silk scarves and handbags, will sell its stake to Monaco-based Wally and will be paid back via commissions on boat sales through to 2020, Thomas said.

The price of the WHY superyacht, which recently went on display at the Abu Dhabi yacht show, ranges between 50 million euros ($68.40 million) to 100 million.

Aquatic Urbanism - Rise of the Blue City - Floating, Amphibic and Resilient Architecture

What is the WHY, after Wally came with the island concept for a super or mega or even a giga -yacht. they teamed up with an other luxury brand, Together with Hermes they designed and are now proud to introduce WHY, an island like private yacht,  in full known as the Wally Hermes Yacht.

WHY is a truly revolutionary concept, a private island of unimaginable space, light and tranquility, it is the world’s most stable hull and provides an entirely new and superior way of living on the sea. Designed for low energy consumption it is also a breakthrough in efficiency and environmental responsibility.

A complete break with conventional yacht design, the triangular hull shape provides more stability and vast amounts of space.

The vessel is the result of a collaboration between Monaco yacht brand Wally and Parisian fashion house Hermès.

“Everybody’s dream is to live on an island, in complete freedom, without constraint, with the independence that only self sufficiency can provide,”  said Wally’s president, Luca Bassani Antivari .

“A piece of land with a beautiful villa partly fulfils this aspiration because it is static. A yacht offers the freedom to move, but does not have the space of a property. WHY has it all.”

Victor Mukhin, Speaker at Chemical Engineering Conferences

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
