World's Biggest Yacht Title Now Belongs To Emirati Royal Family

THE Emirati Royal Family has ended Roman Abramovich's three-year-reign as owner of the world's biggest yacht.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates and emir of Abu Dhabi, has been revealed as the owner of Azzam, a 180-metre superyacht so big few berths can accommodate it.

The boat beats Chelsea Football Club owner Abramovich's Eclipse to the top spot in a survey of the world's 100 biggest yachts by just 16.5 metres.

After its sale earlier this year, the identity of Azzam's buyer was not known.

But according to the annual survey in Yachts France magazine, it belongs to the emir, whose half-brother and government colleague, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan, is owner of the investment company that acquired Manchester City Football Club.

Azzam was designed by Nauta Yachts and built by Lürssen Yachts, in Bremen, Germany, who called it the "most complex and challenging yacht which has ever been built".

With a top speed of 31 knots, driven by a combination of two gas turbines and two diesel engines, it is the third-fastest yacht in the top 100.

It is reported to have cost between $400 million (£258 million) and $600 million (£387 million) to build, and features a lavish 6,000-square foot salon. Mr Abramovich's boat, though smaller, still has room for two helipads, two swimming pools, a disco and a mini-submarine.

Of the 100 yachts listed by the magazine, 31 were owned by people from the Middle East, 19 by Russians and 17 by Americans. The biggest British-owned yacht was inventor James Dyson's 91-metre Nahlin, ranked 36th.

Abu Dhabi Luxury Yacht Charter

With billions of dollars being sunk into Abu Dhabi’s superyacht industry, and over 200 natural islands and more than 700 kilometers of coastline nearby, the Abu Dhabi luxury yacht and charter industry is growing from strength to strength. All along the Arabian Gulf, and Abu Dhabi, in particular, a fascinating series of marinas are taking shape and forging the way towards Abu Dhabi, the UAE's capital city, becoming a yacht charter or superyacht owner’s paradise. Abu Dhabi yacht charter and boating is on the increase. Abu Dhabi, the largest emirate of the seven sheikhdoms that make up the UAE, is the world's richest city according to CNN's fortune magazine and there has been a stead increase in luxury yachts and charter boats in the area.

Abu Dhabi is nestled in a gentle curve of the Arabian Gulf and as the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it is the powerhouse of the Middle East yachting. The wealth of Abu Dhabi is breathtaking being the wealthiest of the UAE’s seven-state federation and resting on one tenth of the world’s oil riches: it contributes to a national GDP of US$ 158 billion. There have been 16 large marine projects in Abu Dhabi, in recent times, the most impressive of which is Yas Island. The luxury yacht development features an awe-inspiring and futuristic mega yacht marina, along with a Ferrari theme park, a water park, polo clubs, luxury hotels and luxury retail; all surrounded by a world-class Formula One racetrack and occupies a total area of 10,000 square meters. The island attracts the world's elite and elicit envy from every corner of the yachting world.

Another symptom of yacht charter and yachting development in the area is the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show (ADYS) which is organised by Informa Yacht Group - the global leader in yachting events management – and proud owner of the prestigious Monaco Yacht Show as well as the exclusive Superyacht Cup Series. Expected to attract Middle Eastern royalty and the region's most successful high net worth individuals, The Abu Dhabi Luxury Yacht Show is aiming to rival the Monaco Yacht Show in terms of top-tier attendees and prestigious exhibitors. The famous luxury yacht shipyards from Italy, the UK, the USA, France and the UAE display the latest, high tech, luxury yachts, both charter and private.  With such an impressive lineup for super yacht enthusiasts, Abu Dhabi has become a major exclusive yachting destination in the world, for yacht charters and luxury yacht owners alike.

Franck Dailles, Group Director of ADYS said in 2009: "Industry leaders will display yachts that exemplify the height of luxury in the yachting world. Those seeking to keep a super yacht in this region will find some of the best yachts in the world at ADYS 2009. And “…few places in the world are as blessed with natural waterfront as Abu Dhabi," explained His Excellency Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nayhan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority. "Our coastline and abundant islands offer endless exploration and sporting options, and the upcoming Guggenheim, Louvre and maritime museums will also put Abu Dhabi on the map as a premiere 21st century cultural destination."

Guide to Abu Dhabi

Where enigmatic desert lands fuse with innovation, ambition and luxury.

The largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates, in recent years Abu Dhabi has begun to emerge from the shadow of its neighbour Dubai. Just 50 years ago it was a quaint fishing village comprising a fort, a few coral buildings and a smattering of barasti huts yet today it is one of the globes most exciting and ambitious destinations while still retaining a relaxed and traditional feel.

One of Abu Dhabi’s most famous and successful accomplishments has been the Yas Island development. Desinged by the renowned Grand Prix architect Hermann Tilke, the ground-breaking Yas Marina circuit each year plays host to the prestigious Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that has quickly become a leading Formula One event. This is an ideal way to incorporate an event into a private yacht charter and join the armada of spectacular superyachts that congregate in the marina to enjoy trackside views of the action. Other notable events in the region are the Abu Dhabi Film Festival and Gourmet Abu Dhabi which have also made their highly acclaimed debuts in recent years.

The picturesque Corniche is the perfect spot of an early evening stroll, finishing up at the beautiful Heritage Village - an ersatz old fortress that tries to recreate the Abu Dhabi of yore through camel enclosures, Bedouin tents and traditional artisans. The Corniche Beach is endowed with powdery sands, translucent sea and has ample watersport opportunities that take full advantage of the Arabian Gulf surroundings.

Follow this by dinner at the Emirates Palace Hotel, said to be the most expensive hotel ever built.  It is home to the stylish Hakkasan restaurant-lounge and a long list of delicious cocktails including the Hakkatini (orange flavored vodka, Campari, Grand Marnier, apple juice). For more traditional cuisine try Mezlai, a selection of outdoor tents serving local specialities such as shark velouté and lamb nachif.

An Abu Dhabi yacht charter wouldn’t be the same without indulging in some retail therapy amongst its designer boutiques and bustling souks. Arabia meets Avant Garde in a winding maze of coloured glass and wood in the vibrant Souk at Central Market whilst the Souk Quaryat Al Beri sprawls in all directions with canals, boutiques, restaurants and buzzing nightspots.

If you are interested in a private yachting vacation along the Arabian coast view all Abu Dhabi Luxury Yacht Charters which are available to rent in the Arabian Gulf region.

Luxury Yacht Charter Middle East & Red Sea Abu Dhabi (1)

The largest emirate in the United Arab Emirates, arrive in style by yacht to explore fabulous beaches, islands and mangroves, and set food on land to uncover the city’s rich heritage

Abu Dhabi yacht charter

Nature and culture harmoniously intertwine in Abu Dhabi to frame a diverse collection of adventures and experiences. The most sublime destination for leisurely island hopping, it has a wealth of idyllic sun, sand and sea hotspots to discover. Things move at a much slower speed than the nearby F1 track on Yas Beach, a private club with a distinctly Mediterranean vibe where lazy sun lounger moments are juxtaposed with thrilling watersports action. Paradise awaits at Nurai Island and a short tender ride delivers you to a boutique resort where the drinks are sparkling, the spa is divine, and the food is five-star. Popular with local residents and located on Abu Dhabi island is Al Bateen Beach, a tranquil spot that also boasts Blue Flag status.

A visit to the UAE capital should factor in cultural exploration, and a guided tour of the landmark Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque tops the list. An architectural wonder, the courtyard’s marble mosaic artwork and reflective pools mirror the amethyst-and- jasper-embedded columns, while the interior features the world’s largest hand- knotted carpet. Pair this with a visit to Abu Dhabi Heritage Village, where a traditional souk, mosque and dwellings offers an immersive glimpse into the emirate’s past. For visiting gourmands, dinner reservations at the iconic Emirates Palace Hotel are a must. Princes, presidents and popstars have all stayed here, and with a choice of two Michelin starred venues – Hakkasan and Talea by Antonio Guida – this simply can’t be missed.

Walk off epicurean indulgence with a stroll along the city’s famous Corniche where the powdery sand beach and turquoise waters are synonymous with fun. Alternatively, for those seeking pure escapism, the Mangrove National Park is a stunning example of conservation commitment. The best way to explore this wildlife haven is by kayak, as you paddle deeper into a world that comprises almost 75 per cent of the total mangrove forest area of the UAE and home to hundreds of species of plant, birds and underwater life.

How much is it to rent a boat in Abu Dhabi?

It is important to know that when you consider yacht charter in Abu Dhabi, there are several different factors that can alter the cost. These include the size of the vessel, the time of year, or whether your boat comes with or without extras. For example, a yacht charter in Abu Dhabi with a skipper and/or crew will probably cost more than a bareboat charter. If you are searching for a boat rental in Abu Dhabi, Click&Boat has some brilliant options for you, your family and friends.

If you dream of chartering a motorboat in Abu Dhabi, rentals start from €812/day and go up to €2,000/day. All of the vessels that we offer have different capacities and extras, so make sure to check out as many as possible to find the boat that best suits you.

When is the best time to go to Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi has a very warm temperature year-round, which, in the summer months can almost become unbearable if you are planning to spend large amounts of time on board. To avoid this, we recommend visiting Abu Dhabi in April-May and October. These months are ideal for a relaxing yacht charter, as the weather is cooler than in the summer months. Additionally, by visiting at this time you also miss Abu Dhabi’s peak tourist season which stretches from December to March. With warm weather, and a soft sea breeze, Abu Dhabi is a fantastic place for your sailing adventure.

The harbours in Abu Dhabi

If you are looking for somewhere to dock your boat rental in Abu Dhabi, the Yas Marina is a great option for you. Located on Yas Island, this luxurious harbour offers something for everyone. You can keep active by partaking in one of the many water sports activities on offer, or you can look out over the water from one of the Yas Marina’s nine restaurants. The marina is a great hub for nightlife, yet is also perfect for families. It even has a musical fountain!

During your stop off at Yas Marina during your Abu Dhabi yacht charter, you should also make sure to visit the Yas Marina circuit, which is known for hosting the best motorsport events in Abu Dhabi.

Department of Energy - Abu Dhabi report highlights performance of power distribution to industrial sector in emirate

A BU DHABI,19th March, 2024 (WAM) -- The Department of Energy – Abu Dhabi’s 2023 report has highlighted the outstanding performance of the emirate’s power grid, according to SAIFI and SAIDI reliability indices, with specific reference to the supply of electricity to industrial zones and companies operating within them.

In this context, the success of existing industries and the enablement of future industries require a sustainable system of infrastructure services and innovative technologies to facilitate the operations of industrial companies and their workflow without interruption or delay. This includes energy services, which form a fundamental pillar in consolidating the industrial sector in the emirate.

Abu Dhabi has proven its readiness to respond to all these requirements and ensure the security of energy distribution. Its energy network is classified as one of the best globally and meets all the future needs of the emirate and industrial entities, which are moving steadily towards a bright future.

In a report, the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) revealed its latest data on the sector's performance, which confirms an exceptional level of stability and the robust nature of the energy network in the emirate. The report highlighted industrial areas that witnessed continuous operating periods. Thanks to this stability in the energy network, Abu Dhabi has occupied a high position that has made it an ideal destination to attract all future industries that are looking for a solid foundation on which to build one success after another without any obstacles or operational challenges.

The System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) and System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI) are electricity distribution performance indices that measure the average length of power interruptions and the average frequency of interruptions experienced by a customer in the span of a year. The data and performance presented in the report by the DoE paint a picture of exceptional reliability and continuity of supply in the emirate.

Abu Dhabi's energy grid, operated by The Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC) and Al Ain Distribution Company (AADC) and regulated by the DoE, holds a prestigious position among the world's most dependable networks, per the 2022 CEER (Council of European Energy Regulators) and internal benchmarks. This ranking underscores the consistent, high-quality power supply enjoyed by the emirate's residents and industries.

As the UAE is strengthening its position as a global hub for trade, tourism and especially advanced manufacturing and renewable energy, the secure access to everyday utilities plays a critical role in achieving the country’s strategic objectives. Benchmarking this latest data, Abu Dhabi shows that it is fully prepared to meet all these requirements to an advanced level of excellence and efficiency.

Turning towards the emirate’s industrial areas, the average length of power outages experienced by a customer in Khalifa A and B Industrial Areas is, on average, just over 10 minutes annually. Customers located in the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD) are now even better off, experiencing less than 4 minutes of outages on average per year. Regarding frequency, a customer in Khalifa B would, on average, experience one interruption every 10 years on average. In contrast, those in ICAD and Khalifa A would, on average, experience one every 20 years.

Ahmed Mohamed Al Rumaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Energy (DoE), confirmed that the sector enjoys high efficiency and full capacity to meet the needs of various sectors with water and electricity services.

He added that the department is cooperating with companies working in the sector to develop and implement integrated plans and policies for electricity, with the aim of achieving the optimal use of available energy sources, diversifying sources of electricity production, and utilising clean and renewable energy sources, rationalising energy and improving its efficiency to achieve sustainable development and preserve the environment.

Ahmed Mohamed Al Rumaithi said: “The strong performance of the electricity grid in Abu Dhabi puts it on a par with the top 10 European countries, especially with the continuous improvement in performance on an annual basis. We have identified areas of excellence and resilience in terms of the performance of the electricity distribution network in industrial areas, and we are committed to intensifying our efforts and continuing the achievements we have made so far.

“We are confident in keeping pace with the increasing demand, which will achieve the satisfaction of all industrial companies and establishments and all beneficiaries of our services in the emirate by providing stable electricity supplies at a distinguished level that meets their needs and future aspirations. In addition to supporting the economic sector, especially the industrial sector, that attracts several investments with all the distinguished infrastructure, remarkable systems, and business sustainability in the emirate.”

Rashed Abdulkarim Al Blooshi, Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED), said: “This remarkable achievement of reliability of Abu Dhabi’s electricity supply and distribution is a testament to the emirate’s ongoing efforts to meet the ever-expanding demand of various stakeholders as part of the overall strategy to strengthen its position as the preferred destination for talents, businesses and investments. We are pleased that the industrial sector enjoys an outstanding performance in the reliability of electricity supply and distribution as we are forging ahead with efforts to deliver the objectives of the Abu Dhabi Industrial Strategy (ADIS) to strengthen the emirate’s position as the region’s most competitive industrial hub.”

“As the catalyst for economic growth and diversification, ADDED supports DoE’s initiatives as they upgrade our economy’s attributes, and we work together towards building a brighter future, placing human development, sustainability and growth at the heart of our plans.”

KALM, the world’s first sports and esports consultancy focused on player development and performance, has launched its new global headquarters in Abu Dhabi. KALM aims to revolutionise the landscape by offering a blend of expertise from both traditional sports and esports, including innovations, technology and academic partnerships to develop first-in-class services for athletes.

Powered by Access Abu Dhabi , an initiative by Maven Global Access and supported by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) , KALM will provide its services to organisations, global brands and individual athletes in and out of their sporting endeavours.

KALM utilises proprietary performance technology from Stanford University to identify key traits and talent of athletes by evaluating perceptive, physical and mental capabilities. It is focused on creating a best-in-class performance centre dedicated to optimising player health and recovery.  KALM harnesses data science and AI applications to understand peak player performance and lifestyle factors affecting performance and develops methods to extend the longevity of an athlete’s career.

Massimo Falcioni, Chief Competitiveness Officer at ADIO, said: “Abu Dhabi is steadily emerging as a regional sports and esports centre, and KALM is joining a solid lineup of global players who are setting up their operations in the emirate. Boasting a positive investment environment, enabling regulations and cutting-edge infrastructure and connectivity, Abu Dhabi continues to be a destination of choice for innovators. We are confident that KALM will drive further growth for a key sector in the emirate, through offering unique and innovative services.

Dr Melita Moore, Managing Partner at KALM, said: “At KALM, our mission is to put the player at the centre. Esports athletes compete at the highest level and their physical, mental and overall wellbeing deserves the same level of care as traditional athletes. We chose Abu Dhabi as the location for our headquarters because of the incredible support and opportunities offered by this vibrant city. Access Abu Dhabi played a pivotal role in bringing us to the region initially. Abu Dhabi’s strategic location, world-class infrastructure, and unwavering commitment to innovation in the gaming industry made it the ideal choice for KALM to thrive.”

KALM has established an athlete-centric development model through education, brand-building and commercialisation focused on protecting, managing and leveraging athlete brands. Through its global headquarters, the company will engage with government, the private sector, federations, teams and key stakeholders to create, drive and deliver its athlete health and wellbeing strategy.

Dr Melita Moore, renowned in sports medicine, brings her global leadership from serving as team physician for NBA and WNBA, to a leading role at the Global Esports Federation as a Vice President. Dr Khizer Khaderi is a visionary in neuro-ophthalmic surgery and technology, contributes expertise in AI, VR and AR. Ali Al Ramahi, a leading sports scientist and performance coach, specialises in developing wellness programmes for esports athletes, while Luke Fedlam, a distinguished sports attorney, shapes the regulatory landscape of sports and esports and provides athlete development and education.

KALM’s initiative will elevate the Middle East’s presence in the global sports and esports arena, providing a platform for young aspirants to achieve international acclaim. The timing of the launch aligns with the region’s growing interest in digital sports and entertainment, marking a significant stride in the development of a robust esports ecosystem.

Abu Dhabi speeds up country club admissions and more to lure hedge fund managers

yacht emir abu dhabi

Abu Dhabi officials are quietly orchestrating a fresh package of perks they hope will help propel the city up the ranks of the world’s biggest financial centres.

The perks include helping traders obtain coveted school admissions for their children, and assisting them with securing memberships at country clubs.

While the city’s US$1.5 trillion (S$2.01 trillion) in sovereign wealth capital will continue to be the main draw for hedge fund managers, officials are formalising a programme that will offer incentives, including lifestyle support and visas, as part of its overall package for finance professionals moving to the region.

The bet is that these perks, along with the city’s tax-free status, sunny weather and a time zone that lets workers trade across Asian, European and United States hours, will help it continue to lure hedge fund titans from New York, London, Hong Kong and Singapore.

“We are positioning ourselves globally by benchmarking against the likes of Hong Kong and Singapore right now,” said Mr Arvind Ramamurthy, who leads market development at the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), the emirate’s financial free zone.

“In the long term, we want to be compared with London and New York.”

There are already signs that some of the early moves by the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are working: Brevan Howard Asset Management now manages more money from the emirate than it does anywhere else on the planet. Goldman Sachs Group, Rothschild & Co and Morgan Stanley are among the global financial firms opening up offices in Abu Dhabi.

The financial centre had 1,825 operational entities as at the end of 2023, up by a third from 2022. ADGM has said it has been the fastest-growing financial centre in the region for two consecutive years.

“We’re connecting people to not just a pool of capital but are providing them a place to call their home,” Mr Ramamurthy said. “We have quality capital.”

Neighbouring Dubai – long considered the Middle East’s de facto business and financial hub – offers similar advantages. Like Abu Dhabi, Dubai’s financial free zone managed to draw in the hedge fund crowd through incentives, such as reduced licensing fees.

Chairman and chief executive Izzy Englander’s Millennium Management set up there recently and now has more than 70 employees, according to a person familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified discussing non-public information.

Over the next year, Balyasny Asset Management aims to double its 12-person workforce in Dubai, another person familiar with the matter said. The fund already has big-name hires making the move to the city, including consumer-focused equities portfolio manager Marco Minoli.

Lengthy waiting lists

But Dubai’s success has come at a cost.

Waiting lists for schools and social clubs in the city run long; reservations at some restaurants can take weeks and key roads are routinely jammed. One executive recently complained it can take an hour during rush hour to exit parking spaces in the financial district. That is likely to get worse – policymakers predict Dubai’s population will surge to 5.8 million in 2040 from the over 3.5 million currently.

In contrast, streets and malls in Abu Dhabi are relatively less busy. Restaurants are starting to fill up, though reservations are easier to come by – for now. That is why city officials are looking to seize this moment to offer up a fresh package of lifestyle perks in the hopes of luring more financiers to their ranks.

Brevan Howard’s decision to turn Abu Dhabi into its biggest risk-taking centre is one of the clearest signs yet of the city’s growing heft. The macro-trading investment firm now runs about US$10 billion from the emirate’s international financial free zone, and it has grown its local team to more than 80 employees.

The firm’s co-founder, billionaire Alan Howard, has predicted Abu Dhabi could become a global financial centre.

“You can see the BOJ (Bank of Japan) beginning of the day and at the end of the day, you can see the Fed (US central bank),” Mr Howard said in a rare public appearance in late 2023.

“So that is an incredible advantage of Abu Dhabi and because of that, we also need an execution desk here.”

Welcoming the rich

In addition to the favourable time zone and year-round sunshine that have drawn a plethora of traders to the region, the UAE is also one of few countries around the world that welcomes the rich. That is a change of pace from other nations, where billionaires often find themselves under scrutiny.

Case in point: Britain is overhauling its system of preferential tax treatment for wealthy foreigners, a move aimed at multi-billionaires but one that could ensnare mid-level bankers too. That could well pave the way for a further influx into the UAE, which does not tax personal income or capital gains.

“Hedge fund managers resent the vilification of capitalism, reckless government spending and rising taxes in New York and London,” said Mr Andrew Beer, managing member of DBi, a New York-based investment firm.

“By comparison, Dubai and Abu Dhabi look like giant, sunny welcome mats.”

Another element the city likes to promote is a relatively low rate of crime. One recent arrival, an executive who helps raise capital for clients including hedge funds, said he never locks his home. Fans of high-end watches can wear their Rolexes and walk through the city without fear of getting mugged, said another.

Policy tweak

A key policy tweak is also helping both Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the UAE started to break away from a decades-old economic model that linked residency to employment. In the past, expatriates – who make up 90 per cent of the UAE’s population – have had to leave when their jobs ended.

At the height of the global financial crisis, for instance, reports abounded of residents abandoning their luxury cars at Dubai’s airport to head home. A decade later, Dubai reported the steepest population decline in the Gulf as expatriates were forced to leave amid the economic upheaval wrought by the pandemic.

Officials wanted the country to shed this reputation of transience, and started to widen the eligibility net for 10-year “golden” visas, which can now be obtained by means including property buys. That is prompting residents to consider staying longer.

Take Mr Mitesh Parikh: In 2018, he became one of the first hedge fund traders to move to Dubai when he launched his own firm. He later merged the company with Schonfeld Strategic Advisors.

He had always planned to move back to London in a few years, but is now planning to stay in Dubai. Meanwhile, Schonfeld – where he co-heads the macro and fixed income trading business – has expanded to 28 people in the city.

“The opportunity set is too good to miss,” according to Mr Austen Smart, managing director at Tighe international, which helps financial firms recruit executives in the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

“Singapore and Hong Kong’s loss is the GCC’s gain.” BLOOMBERG

Iconic F1 cars to headline Bonhams|Cars auction at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Ferrari_1.jpeg

Formula 1 Paddock Club and Bonhams|Cars will present one of the most high-profile auctions of racing and sports cars ever seen at the 2023 season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on November 25.

In an exclusive partnership with the Formula 1 Paddock Club, Bonhams|Cars is set to unveil On the Grid: The Abu Dhabi Auction , which will take place against the backdrop of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the stunning Yas Marina Circuit on the evening before the 2023 season-closing race.

Commencing at 2030 local time, the live audience will make their way to the grid, while a global audience will be able to stream the broadcast on Bonhamscars.com.

Headlining the exclusive auction of more than 30 collector cars are a number of race-winning F1 machines, including an ex-Mario Andretti Lotus 79 from 1978, an ex-Kimi Raikkonen 2006 McLaren MP4/21 – which featured in the Monaco Grand Prix where the Iceman famously retired from the race and went to hang out on his private yacht – as well as an authorised Ferrari F2001 showcar built to celebrate Michael Schumacher’s fourth title win.

Kimi Raikkonen's 2006 McLaren is up for sale

There’s an F1 connection in one of the road cars being offered, meanwhile, with two-time champion Fernando Alonso’s personal McLaren Elva also up for sale – with a guide price of $2,500,000-3,000,000.

“This extraordinary partnership marks a historic milestone, as it brings together the most coveted automobiles at one of the most significant sporting events on the calendar,” said Maarten ten Holder, Managing Director of Bonhams|Cars.

“We’re both in a business that is driven by passion and competition, in the pursuit of excellence. We anticipate that our inaugural Abu Dhabi auction will match the energy and spectacle that is consistently delivered from F1 competitions.”

Beginning Thursday November 23, Bonhams|Cars will preview its impressive line-up in various areas within the massive 400-acre Yas Marina Circuit. As the official shipping, storage, and detailing partner, The Stables will host 26 of the cars on offer in a custom built, state-of-the-art gallery just 100 metres from the track. The remaining offerings will be presented in fan zones and within the Paddock for the three days of preview before the auction.

Falcon Aviation to Operate Archer eVTOL Aircraft For Dubai to Abu Dhabi Flights

  • Charles Alcock
  • March 12, 2024

UAE-based private flight provider Falcon Aviation will launch eVTOL air services connecting Abu Dhabi and Dubai under an agreement with manufacturer Archer. The partnership announced today calls for the two companies to develop a network of vertiports connecting the two cities with Archer’s four-passenger Midnight aircraft, with operations to begin as early as 2025.

The starting point for the joint operation will be the Falcon Tours Heliport Terminal at Dubai’s Atlantis The Palm resort which Falcon Aviation upgraded last year and officially opened on March 8. Abu Dhabi-based Falcon already provides helicopter charter flights and sightseeing tours across the UAE, as well as operating business jets and providing ground handling and maintenance support to other companies.

Flights from Atlantis will connect with the Marina Mall Heliport in Abu Dhabi’s Corniche district. Flying over the Gulf, the Midnight aircraft will make the trip in 30 minutes from takeoff to landing, which compares with a 90-mile drive of around two hours during peak traffic. The two companies now plan to adapt the existing heliports for use by eVTOLs.

“For nearly two decades, Falcon Aviation has been at the forefront of helicopter passenger transport in the UAE,” said company CEO Ramandeep Oberoi. “Our partnership with Archer is a leap into the future, as we prepare to offer flying car services together in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, continuing our tradition of world-class transportation solutions.”

Falcon Aviation has previously evaluated Eve Air Mobility’s four-passenger eVTOL, which is not expected to complete type certification before the end of 2026. The company also had discussions with other eVTOL aircraft developers, including Joby Aviation, AutoFlight, Overair, and Ascendance.

Archer Goes Head-to-head with Rival Joby

Last month, Dubai’s government granted Joby exclusive access to the local market for on-demand air taxi services within the emirate for a six-year period. The agreement with the Road and Transport Authority envisions operations from a network of vertiports, with the first four locations being at Dubai International Airport, the Palm Jumeirah, Dubai marina, and Dubai downtown.

The agreement between Archer and Falcon Aviation builds on a memorandum of understanding forged last year in which the UAE-based company agreed in principle to operate the Midnight aircraft, which Archer is aiming to have certified and ready to enter service in 2025. The collaboration is backed by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, which is expected to make an undisclosed investment in what is set to be Archer’s first international operation. Archer will participate in Abu Dhabi’s Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industry cluster.

In November, during the Dubai Airshow, Archer signed an agreement with India’s InterGlobe Enterprises that could lead to the purchase of up to 200 Midnights. These would be used for commercial flights in cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

“We have made rapid progress in the UAE over the past three months since announcing Abu Dhabi and Dubai will be home to our first international Midnight flights as soon as 2025,” said Archer chief commercial officer Nikhil Goel. “We’re proud to be the first to announce plans to operate between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, along with vertiport infrastructure at both ends of the commuter journey.”

Like Joby, Archer is pressing hard to complete FAA type certification by the end of 2024, with the hope that regulators in states such as the UAE will quickly endorse this approval. Last month, Archer announced it had completed the third of three stages of flight testing with its Midnight prototype aircraft.

On March 8, it reported an incident in which the right landing gear oleo strut "had an issue" without sustaining damage to the rest of the aircraft, with repairs expected to ground that aircraft for a couple of weeks. Testing is continuing with other prototypes.
