BANGKOK (AP) — Should visitors to Thailand be concerned about their safety after six people were found dead in a locked hotel room in Bangkok?

Thai authorities were quick to stress they believed the incident involved a personal dispute and did not reflect any threat to foreign visitors.

Thai police believe the six — four Vietnamese nationals, and two U.S. citizens of Vietnamese heritage — died of cyanide poisoning motivated by a dispute over an investment. Forensic evidence and police interviews with relatives of the dead are said to support their hypothesis.

Here’s a look at what we know so far — and how.

What were some of the clues at the crime scene?

Police were alerted on Tuesday afternoon that six bodies, three men and three women, had been found in a fifth-floor hotel room in the five-star Grand Hyatt Erawan, in the heart of Bangkok’s tourism district.

The six — some of whom were staying in other rooms in the same hotel — had been scheduled to check out that day or the day before. Security footage showed that the group had gathered in one room on Monday with their packed luggage.

The room’s locked front door and security camera footage showed that no one else had entered the room after hotel staff delivered the meals on Monday afternoon.

Image

The bodies were found scattered, some in the living room and some in the bedroom, suggesting it was not a ritual suicide. There were also no signs of theft, the suitcases were unopened.

Police also found a table full of uneaten room service meals, and six teacups whose contents had apparently been consumed. They noticed an unidentified sediment in the cups.

The police also said there were no signs of struggle and no injuries on the bodies, leading them to suspect poisoning as the cause of death.

What did the forensic evidence show?

When police analyzed the sediment in the teacups, they found traces of the deadly poison cyanide. Initial results from autopsies, performed at Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn Hospital, also turned up traces of cyanide in all six bodies.

Forensic specialists said that their organs showed signs of asphyxiation — an effect of cyanide poisoning — supporting the conclusion that the fast-acting poison was likely the cause of death. But they cautioned that a detailed analysis must be performed to confirm the finding.

It’s Thailand’s second highly publicized case of alleged cyanide poisoning in as many years. Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn, or “Am Cyanide” as she was nicknamed in the media, was accused last year of killing at least 14 people to whom she owed money over the course of years. A 15th was also poisoned but survived.

Who killed whom, and why?

Police say they are still investigating, but they’ve made it clear that they’re focusing on a Vietnamese American woman who may have had a financial dispute with two other people in the room.

Police said they believed one of the six carried out the killings before committing suicide, but did not name the suspect.

However, they said one of the two Vietnamese Americans, Sherine Chong, was the only person in the room when the room service food was delivered on Monday, and that she had refused the staff’s offer to brew the tea, saying she would do it herself.

They said that a Vietnamese couple who were among the dead had invested about 10 million baht ($278,000) with Chong and a Vietnamese woman in a construction project that had not shown any progress, and they may have been meeting to resolve a dispute about the project. The investment was said to have been connected to the construction of a hospital in Japan.

It was unclear whether the two other people whose bodies were found were part of the dispute.

Who were the 6 people who died?

Thai police identified the dead as two U.S. citizens — Sherine Chong, 56; and Dang Hung Van, 55 — and four Vietnamese nationals — Nguyen Thi Phuong Lan, 47; Pham Hong Thanh, 49; Tran Dinh Phu, 37; and Nguyen Thi Phuong, 46.

Little personal information has emerged about the six, though Vietnamese media reported that Phu is a prominent makeup artist from the central city of Da Nang who works under the professional name Phu Gia Gia, and who told his family that he was making a three-day work trip to Thailand.

What has been the reaction of the governments involved?

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin went to the crime scene just hours after police to say that incident should not affect tourism, which is a major revenue earner for the country.

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính instructed the Foreign Ministry to work with Thai officials in investigating the deaths, and to make sure that the safety and rights of Vietnamese citizens are protected.

U.S. State Dept. spokesperson Matthew Miller in Washington offered condolences to the families of the dead. He said the U.S. is closely monitoring the situation and would communicate with local authorities.

He did not say if the FBI would be involved in the investigation, as had been announced by Srettha. The FBI is empowered by U.S. law to investigate crimes committed against U.S. citizens abroad.

In a Bangkok Hotel Room, Six Bodies and Traces of Cyanide

A case that shocked Thailand, the police indicated on Wednesday, was one of murder-suicide.

Nearly a dozen officials seated around a rectangular table that is surrounded by photographers and other members of the press.

By Sui-Lee Wee and Muktita Suhartono

Reporting from Bangkok

The luxury hotel room, a suite, had been locked for nearly a day. The bowls of tom yum soup and plates of stir-fried vegetables and fried rice had been left untouched. But there was something far more ominous in the room: six bodies.

The episode, at a hotel in downtown Bangkok, prompted speculation of a mass poisoning. The prime minister, Srettha Thavisin, rushed to the scene and offered assurances that Thailand, one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, remained safe for overseas visitors.

A day later, on Wednesday, the police said they had found traces of cyanide in the room and indicated the poison had been administered by one of the people found dead.

The dead — three women and three men, ranging in age from 37 to 56 — were all of Vietnamese descent. Two of them were citizens of the United States, and the rest of Vietnam. They had arrived in Thailand earlier in the month, some for their first visit to the country. The group stayed at a five-star hotel, the Grand Hyatt Erawan, which sits across a famous Hindu shrine in the heart of downtown Bangkok.

Late on Sunday night, they gathered in a room on the 5th floor before returning to their rooms, police officials said. The next morning, five of them checked out and headed to room 502. At around 11:45 a.m. they ordered food. A little later, they added another serving of fried rice. At 1:51 p.m., a server brought in that order, along with two thermos flasks of tea and six teacups. He was in the room for roughly six minutes and saw only one person, a woman. He offered to make the tea, but the woman declined, saying she would make it herself.

It’s unclear what happened after the server left, but it appears nobody left or entered the room, which was locked from inside. The staff of the hotel went to check the room on Tuesday because the occupant had not checked out as scheduled. The police were soon at the scene.

Entering the suite, they found one body by the door. Three more bodies, including one of a woman lying by the dining table with the untouched food, were in the living room. The remaining two victims were found in the bedroom.

A preliminary investigation found traces of cyanide on each of the flasks and teacups and also in the blood of one of the victims. The dead, the police added, had been poisoned by one of the people in the room, who also died.

The suspect “did this by using cyanide,” Maj. Gen. Noppasin Poonsawat, the deputy police chief in Bangkok, told reporters. He did not identify the person but officials said they did not suspect any gang activity and emphasized that Thailand was safe for foreign visitors.

The dead were identified as Sherine Chong and Dang Hung Van, both Vietnamese Americans, and Nguyen Thi Phuong Lan, Hong Pham Thanh, Tran Dinh Phu, and Nguyen Thi Phuong, all Vietnamese citizens.

The police said they had spoken with the relatives of the dead and gleaned some details about the group.

It appeared, General Noppasin said, that Ms. Lan was a broker in an investment plan and Ms. Chong had received 10 million baht, or nearly $280,000, from Ms. Phuong and her husband, Mr. Thanh. The couple wanted an update on their investment from Ms. Chong and Ms. Lan and had agreed to discuss the issue in Japan, but they met in Bangkok instead because of visa problems.

Mr. Phu was a well-known makeup artist who had worked with many Vietnamese celebrities. He had traveled to Thailand to help a bride get ready for her wedding about 10 days ago, according to a report in Nguoi Lao Dong, a Vietnamese newspaper, which cited Mr. Phu’s relatives. His family said they did not know whom he traveled with and that he was often on the road, according to the newspaper.

The Thai police said on Wednesday that they were coordinating with the embassies of Vietnam and the United States to solve the case. Officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation had arrived in Thailand to assist, they added.

By Wednesday evening, the frenzy at the hotel had started to subside. The episode recalled why the Erawan Shrine was built nearby in the 1950s: It was meant to ward off the bad luck that had plagued the original hotel on the Grand Hyatt site.

Thin, small and scratchy: How hotel towels got so bad

It’s all about what they’re made of.

catamaran 6 guest inn

For his new hotel in Phoenix, Sam Fox set a high bar for the guest room towels. He ordered several styles from different suppliers and had them shipped to his Arizona home. For nearly two weeks, he subjected them to a rigorous cycle of washing and drying. The softest, plushest and most absorbent towels earned a spot in the Global Ambassador ’s bathrooms.

“If I have to spend another $50,000 at the end of the year to change out the towels just to keep them great, I’m okay doing that,” said Fox, a restaurateur who opened the luxury hotel in December.

Though travelers typically don’t book a hotel solely for its linen closet, towels do matter. Online reviewers commonly will praise hotels for their thick, plush towels. Even more hotels seem to disappoint guests, who blast their “scratchy,” “worn” or “thin” towels.

In a Hilton survey conducted in 2022 and 2023, towels ranked as the top request made to front desks, with guests addressing their quality and quantity. The company responded with a six-month product review that involved nearly 60 vendors and washing its test towels at least 120 times. After concluding its research, Hilton started rolling out 40 million new units of towels and noticed an uptick in guest satisfaction.

“This particular product has material in it that expands as it is washed,” said Anu Saxena, global head of Hilton’s supply management, which services more than 17,000 properties worldwide, “so it makes the towel feel softer and fuller.”

While some hotels are making progress, towels at many budget and mid-tier properties can still be as abrasive as a cat’s tongue. Here is what’s going on with hotel towels and what’s coming soon.

Hotel towels aren’t created equal

Though basic in appearance, towels are intricate in design and construction. The quality depends on such factors as yarn type and thickness, loop length and density, and tensile strength, according to Judson Uhre, a hotel investment adviser and certified master hotel supplier with the supply company Hotels For Humanity . He said a top-shelf towel will be made of 100 percent cotton, such as Egyptian or Pima, and have a grams-per-square meter (GSM) rating — a measure of towel thickness — of 500 or more.

To save money, many properties favor blends, such as cotton with a polyester middle weave. They will also choose a style with a lower GSM. A lighter towel will dry faster and can better withstand frequent spins in the washer and dryer — a sacrifice of softness and heft for longevity.

Basic hotels “need to wash the towels very often, because the length of stay is lower than in luxury hotels,” said Julien Duran, co-founder of Luxury Hospitality Consulting . It costs more to wash bigger towels, too, an expense that standard hotels can’t as easily swallow.

How towels degrade

Most hotels can squeeze 50 to 100 uses out of their towels before they have to scrap them, said Greg Eubanks, group vice president at Standard Textile , which stocks thousands of hotels worldwide. The average hotel, he added, replaces about 60 percent of its inventory annually.

“It was either lost or mysteriously disappeared or is stained, ripped or torn,” Eubanks said.

Large-scale laundering contributes to a towel’s decline. Chemical cleaning products and hot temperatures can erode fibers, causing a towel to become scratchy. Hard water also degrades towels, as does bleach, which is essential for keeping hotel towels a perfect shade of fresh-snowfall white.

“Hotel laundry is not like your Maytag at home,” Eubanks said. “The rigors of hospitality laundry are much harsher, the environment’s harsher and the chemicals are harsher, so you have to develop towels that are durable.”

Why you shouldn’t mix towels

Every hotel towel has its place and purpose. Because of this division of labor, properties often ask guests not to remove their towels from their room or pilfer ones from the pool or spa. Even if the towels look similar, housekeeping will know.

The towels assigned to guest rooms are typically white to signify cleanliness, and they come in an array of sizes, such as washcloth, hand towel and bath towel or “sheet.” Hotels avoid brightly hued towels because the colors may fade.

Pool and beach towels , meanwhile, have one size — big — and are often colorful, so they stand out on the sun deck and in the laundry room. They are built of heartier stock that can withstand sunscreen, chlorinated pool water or other outdoor elements. Eubanks said his company integrates solution-dyed yarn in its pool towels, to act as a shield against chlorine.

Spa towels, which sometimes perform robe duties, are more decadent than the common towel. They’re also tough. They can handle the stresses of the job, which include essential oils, creams and other potions commonly used in massages and other treatments.

Hotel towels’ biodegradable future

Towels are evolving in line with the hospitality industry’s attempts to minimize waste and embrace greener practices. Manufacturers are experimenting with innovative blends that incorporate bamboo or beech wood fibers, which require less water than cotton production, or recycled beverage bottles or plastic.

“Sustainability is absolutely at the forefront with materials, recycled content, manufacturing processes and, of course, durability,” said Jeanne Varney, a senior lecturer at Cornell University’s Nolan School of Hotel Administration.

Eubanks said Standard Textile has been testing micro-filament technology that can bolster a towel’s durability. In the future, he said, he’s hopeful about integrating synthetic materials that can easily break down and eliminate waste.

“Cotton is biodegradable, so it’s more sustainable than polyester, but having polyester that biodegrades is the future” for hospitality towels,” Eubanks said.

For now, when a towel is no longer fit to serve, hotels are thinking more creatively about its next life. Instead of hauling old towels to the landfill, some properties will repurpose them into cleaning rags or distribute them to homeless shelters, orphanages or other charitable centers. Earlier this year, Hilton announced that it would donate more than 100,000 of its towels and other terry items to hundreds of animal shelters in North America. The hand-me-downs will become bedding for up to 70,000 animals.

That’s the kind of effort that hotels need to be making, Varney said. “Don’t throw them away. Keep them in the life-cycle stream.”
