Learn More About Crescent And Find Your Next Boat

Crescent Yachts was originally founded as Crescent Beach Boatbuilders by successful businessman Jack Charles in the 1980s. What began as a sideline to his business in the trucking industry, quickly outgrew its production space and Crescent moved operations to a state-of-the art shipyard in Richmond, British Columbia and rebranded the business as Crescent Custom Yachts to better portray the high-end nature of the products. Many beautiful superyachts over 100ft were produced in this facility just outside of Vancouver and sailed worldwide. Tim Charles, who joined the family business while in high school, saw it close in 2004 due to financial pressures and its assets were later sold to an investment firm where it stagnated during the recession years. After graduation, grandson of founder Jack, Tim Charles started a yacht refit and transformational overhaul business, leasing some of the service bays from the new owner of the Crescent yard and hiring former employees. The new company, Platinum Marine thrived and grew to over 100 employees, leading to an opportunity to buy back the Crescent brand and intellectual property in 2015. Crescent Custom Yachts focused on the design and building of new yachts, while Platinum Marine continued with the refit business.

List Of Crescent Yachts On The Brokerage Market

Owner Tim Charles was able to leverage existing relationships with major yacht brokers and utilize the highly skilled, experienced craftsmen of Platinum Marine (some with original Crescent experience) to avoid the “start-up” perception with prospective clients. The first yacht, a Crescent 145 (44 meter) custom fiberglass yacht, was launched relatively quickly and first shown at the 2016 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Designed by renowned Jonathan Quinn Barnett (JQB Designs) on a hull design by Jack Sarin—both highly respected in the global luxury yacht community, Crescent 145 (M/Y Muchos Mas) raised the bar for fit, finish, and meticulous attention to detail, making big waves at the Show. Timing was perfect as the economy began its comeback and both Canadian and US buyers benefitted from the attractive exchange rate, offering excellent value. The successful launch led to orders for more yachts—Crescent 110 (33m), Crescent 164, and Crescent 138. Even with the challenges imposed by covid-19 restrictions, boat sales did extremely well, including superyachts, as people were spending more time aboard their yachts.

Another contributing factor to the success and growth of the Pacific Northwest shipyard was the development and opening of Victoria International Marina in 2019 with 28 eco-friendly slips for superyachts. This world-class marina and the global media coverage of its development and opening has helped promote one of the world’s most beautiful cruising destinations, the Pacific Northwest with 25,000 kilometers (over 15,534 miles) of explorable, breathtaking-beautiful coastline between Victoria, BC and Alaska.

Today, Crescent Custom Yachts has built the largest recreational, private superyacht in Canada, the Crescent 164 (50m), which is sold. Besides the 164, Crescent’s project list includes the aluminum hull Crescent 155 (47.2m) with exterior & interior design by Crescent Yachts; the composite hull Crescent 145 (44.2m) with exterior & interior design by JQB Design—launched 2017; the composite hull Crescent 130 (39.6m) with exterior & interior design by JQB Design; the composite hull Crescent 117 (35.7m) with exterior & interior design by Greg Marshall Design—launched January 2020; the composite hull Crescent 115 (35m) with exterior & interior design by JQB Design; the composite hull Crescent 110 (33.5m) with exterior & interior design by Greg Marshall Design; and the fiberglass hull Crescent 108 (32.9m) with exterior & interior design by Greg Marshall Design.

Award-winning design firm, Gregory C Marshall Naval Architect, Ltd in nearby Victoria, BC is a leader in creative yacht design and naval architecture, having designed some of the world’s finest megayachts during more than 35 years in business. Blending artistry with naval architecture expertise to create the balances of art and science, creativity and technology, appearance and performance are what satisfies the dreams of clients and distinguishes the work of GCMNA and Crescent Custom Yachts. JQB Design (Jonathan Quinn Barnett Ltd) founded in Seattle in 1995, is an American yacht design firm with over 32 years’ experience designing award-winning superyachts. Each exterior and interior design project is focused on reflecting the imagination and requirements of each client. Besides exterior and interior yacht design, JQB Design offers custom exterior furniture design and bespoke interior furniture design through complementary firm, Yachtstyle LLC, established in 2006 by brother, Chris Barnett. To achieve the uniquely individual design features appreciated by clients, the firm continually researches new materials and technologies.

Another legendary and respected yacht design firm in the Pacific Northwest, Jack Sarin Studio, designed the exteriors and hulls of many pre-2004 Crescent Custom Yachts helping establish the Crescent Yacht style. In fact, the first 2016 Crescent 145 designed by Jonathan Quinn Barnett, was built on a hull design by Jack Sarin.

Among new technologies utilized on the Crescent 117, designed by Greg Marshall, is the Crestron system for controlling lighting, blinds, and audiovisual entertainment system via an app on a smartphone or tablet commonly used in modern upscale residences. 3M’s Di-NocTM architectural finish wrapping films are utilized creating complimentary textures and colors in premium, rare woods (without sacrificing forests), costly textiles, stones, leathers, metals, and more to create stunning effects throughout the yacht, contrasting with the natural black oak and marble. The Di-Noc (DIURNO NOCTURN = beautiful day and night) films are non-porous, therefore easy to clean and disinfect, long lasting, and easy to install, saving time and expense.

Crescent 145, M/Y Muchos Mas launched 2017, designed by JQB Design has some amazing features such as the award-winning sun deck with pool, swim-up bar, shallow area with submerged benches for tanning in water, waterfall, and clear glass panels that surround the sundeck as a wind screen. Another exceptional feature is the superyacht spa that is a series of overhead jets pulsing waves of water in a programmed pattern over a heated onyx bed for a hydro massage experience. At the touch of a button the glass surrounding the onyx walled shower area becomes opaque for privacy. The stainless-steel galley has every imaginable food prep device and an herb garden with grow lights! Layout and two doors keep crew and stewardesses out of cooking zones.

The Crescent Yacht models must be seen to be appreciated for their excellent design, innovative use of space, and stunning beauty—practical and luxuriously comfortable!

Don’t want to wait for a new build? Currently there are five Crescent Motor Yachts available in the yacht brokerage (preowned) market ranging from model year 1992 Crescent 120 at under $5 million to model year 2020 Crescent 117 @ about $13,250,000. Listing prices range from under $2 million for a 1994 Crescent 105 to $about $28,500,000 for a 2016 Crescent 145.

CRESCENT Yacht – Stunning $600 Million Superyacht

CRESCENT yacht is a 135.50 meter (445 ft) superyacht built by Luerssen in Germany and launched in 2018. She can accommodate up to 18 guests and 40 crew members and cost a rumored US $600 Million.

Despite her considerable price, the owner is unknown and his identity has not been released to the public after her purchase.

CRESCENT is currently considered 19th on the list of largest yachts in the world and the 11th largest ever built by Luerrsen.

cres4

CRESCENT yacht interior

The nature of the interior and the exact layout are unknown, and only speculations and estimates are available.

It is assumed that CRESCENT includes a sizable gym, several swimming pools, a movie theatre, spa facilities, a beauty salon with several rooms, and an outdoor barbecue.

Wifi and air conditioning as well as a large elevator are also available aboard the superyacht.

The renowned French design house Zuretti was responsible for developing an extravagant interior design for the motor yacht CRESCENT.

They specialize in custom projects and have worked on a variety of luxury vessels in the past.

Their trademark style combines classic elements with contemporary features which is what CRESCENT’s interior most likely looks like as well.

Luerssen has described the interior as “traditionally styled” which suggests high-quality wooden elements, luxurious upholstery, and natural tones combined with opulent light fixtures.

According to the renowned manufacturer this style was chosen in accordance with the owner’s wishes.

Due to her size, she is estimated to have at least three major salons and most likely very spacious cabins.

CRESCENT has a distinct absence of open-air space since most of her decks are permanently covered.

Her pools and jacuzzis are all located in shaded areas and not visible from passing boats or from the air.

The only exception is a medium-sized pool located in a somewhat hidden spot on the aft deck. At least one of her pools is said to feature a custom-made glass bottom.

cres3

The exact layout of her cabins isn’t known, however, CRESCENT features a sizable master suite with panoramic views.

She can host up to 18 guests in an estimated 9 cabins and has space for a crew of 40 members.

One of the few publicly known features is her large glass atrium which spans three separate floors.

This impressive structure has a tinted glass front and can be seen from both her starboard and port side.

These large window fronts let in additional natural light giving the interior a more modern and innovative design. Across the entire yacht, a state-of-the-art entertainment system has been installed, including large tv screens in all bedrooms and salons as well as a modern audio system.

Specifications

CRESCENT displaces an incredible 9.194 tons making her one of the largest yachts in the world by weight. Even for her length of 135.50 m (445 ft) this is impressive.

Her top speed lies somewhere around 18 knots, although she tends to cruise at 12 knots which is reasonably fast considering her gross tonnage.

She is powered by twin MTU 16V4000 diesel engines and has a beam of 22.04 meters (72.4 ft) and a draft of 5.2 meters (17.1 ft).

CRESCENT sails under the Cayman Islands flag, which is one of the most popular in the world for superyachts.

Although the exact details of her sale from Luerssen are unknown, she is rumored to have cost US $600 Million with average running costs of US $25 to $50 Million every year.

She was constructed at the Lemwerder shipyard, which lies close to the city of Bremen in Germany. Since CRESCENT is currently in private ownership, she is not available for charter or for sale.

cres9

The Norwegian naval architect and designer Espen Oeino worked on CRESCENT and developed her eye-catching exterior.

Unlike the majority of large yachts, she is not white, which makes her stand out even more, especially when docked in popular harbors across Europe.

image 32

The secrecy surrounding her owner and interior has made her a popular target for yacht spotters, although there are still very few photos available of this magnificent vessel.

The exterior of CRESCENT is a dark navy blue, and the upper stories feature a silvery chrome color.

Her design has been described as masculine and muscular in the past, with a modern approach to traditional yacht layout that appears especially striking.

She has a large aluminum superstructure and a total of four decks. Guests have their choice of two helicopter landing pads, one located on the bow of the vessel and the other on the top deck.

The latter is equipped with a retractable helicopter hangar which can be extended to cover a small aircraft if needed.

This is a unique feature that cannot be found in very many other superyachts. It’s yet another example of the high levels of privacy that this yacht offers for its anonymous owners.

It goes without saying that a modern yacht such as CRESCENT is equipped with state-of-the-art zero-speed stabilizers.

On the lower aft deck, she has a generous beach club area with a large swimming platform and an adjacent pool.

However, unlike many other superyachts, this area cannot be closed off when the vessel is underway.

At night CRESCENT is illuminated by an advanced underwater lighting system that was tailor-made for the yacht. She carries at least three tenders, although their make and type are not known.

SUMMARY & LAYOUT

CRESCENT LADY was completed by Crescent Yachts in Vancouver Canada in 2020 and due to the import/export regulations in Canada did not arrive in Florida to be sold until 2022. She is being sold as a new yacht with full manufacturers warranty.

When comparing her to other similar size & aged yachts on the market she represents an excellent opportunity.

She sleeps 10 guests in 5 cabins with 4 cabins located on the lower level including a spacious VIP and full beam master ensuite with walk-in closet & sitting area. Forward of the galley is the fifth cabin which could also be used as a Captain's cabin due to location.

Substantial crew accommodations back aft that sleep up to 6 crew in 3 cabins including a spacious ensuite captains cabin, bunk room and queen crew cabin that share a Jack & Jill bathroom.

The main salon has an open floor plan that includes a sitting area and formal dining. Forward to port side is access to the country kitchen style open galley & 5th guest cabin. To starboard is the day head, access to the dog-house and then stairs lead up to the wheelhouse and another set that leads down to the guest cabins.

The wheel house is fantastic with excellent raised visibility for the cabin and guests who can enjoy views from the 2 separate sitting areas.

The exterior of the vessel has numerous locations that allow guests to lounge & spread out starting with the massive aft deck complete with formal dining area, bar, tv, and sun pads that overlook the double-wide swim platform located below. Full walk arounds to both port & starboard lead to the bow area where you can find a raised sun bed that allows multiple people to relax and enjoy the sun or the view when underway.

Making your way up to the boat deck from the aft deck stairs you have an open space that is will allow the owner to carry a substantial tender plus space for 2 full size jet skis. Complimenting the space is a BBQ, jacuzzi, and massive storage area which is accessible behind the stairs that lead to the upper sundeck.

Part of the highlight of the yachts profile lines is the gorgeous hard top that has a well laid out mast and built in glass skylights. The sundeck has a center line helm station with wing stations to both port & starboard. Built in L-shaped settees mirror one another.

Overall CRESCENT LADY is a fantastic yacht which comes with a unique history which is worth sharing.

The hull was originally built for Destiny Yachts circa 2000 & was never completed. It sat unfinished until Crescent Yachts saw the opportunity, purchased the project in 2018 and over the next 2 years finished the build under the guidance of well respected designer & naval architect Gregory C Marshall.

The engines are also 2001 and were obviously never entered into service so they come with a standard 2 year warranty and have been brought up to current EPA standards with EIAPP certificates issued.

All major components including her generators and Zeus shore power converters are also offered with warranty. Galley equipment still has manuals in the drawers and have never been used. Her navigation package is the latest equipment that was available in recent years so a modern day bridge & upper helm station.

I am sharing this to give full disclosure & this also helps explain the true value and how a 2020 117ft yacht can be offered for such a competitive price. The builder has far more money invested into the build than the asking price so someone is going to end up with a great yacht at an even better price.

CRESCENT LADY is currently docked in the Free Trade Zone at Seahaven Superyacht Marina in the greater Fort Lauderdale area. Inspections and offers are highly recommended.

Spain impounds a third superyacht amid E.U. crackdown on Russian oligarchs

crescent yacht value

Spanish authorities have impounded a third superyacht believed to belong to a Russian oligarch, a seizure that is part of a global crackdown on those seen to support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Crescent, a yacht registered in the Cayman Islands, had requested to depart the Spanish Port of Tarragona on March 4, authorities said, but it did not set sail. The 443-foot yacht has an estimated value of about $600 million, according to SuperyachtFan , a website tracking luxury yachts, which cited its owner as an “unknown billionaire.”

Governments all over the world are working to identify and freeze the assets of Russian elites and their family members, including luxury apartments, money and yachts. Online sleuths are watching their moves, tweeting names, locations, ownership and the latest status of yachts owned by Russian oligarchs.

The Crescent is supersized even by global elite benchmarks — few of the world’s biggest yachts measure more than 400 feet . It was built by the German shipyard Lürssen , which constructs many of the largest yachts, and reportedly features a retractable helicopter hangar and a big glass-bottomed pool.

Schadenfreude at sea: The Internet is watching with glee as Russian oligarchs’ yachts are seized

Spain’s Transportation Ministry said it was collecting information “to confirm the real ownership” of the vessel and whether control of the ship corresponds to an individual on the list of people and entities sanctioned by the European Council over the war in Ukraine. If it turns out to belong to someone on the sanctions list, it will be “immobilized,” officials said.

Spanish authorities said that so far this week, they have seized the Valerie, in the Port of Barcelona, and the Lady Anastasia in Majorca’s Port Adriano. The former is suspected to be owned by Sergey Chemezov, a longtime ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin and a subject of Western sanctions. Chemezov is the head of Rostec, a Russian industrial and military conglomerate.

The United States and its allies have said they will not fight the Russian military directly or support Ukraine’s request for a no-fly zone , which U.S. officials fear could lead to broader war with a nuclear-armed superpower. But they are waging an economic war against the Putin-connected Russian super-elite .

Russian superyachts and aircraft barred from New Zealand under new sanctions

Protesters this week broke into a white stucco mansion in central London belonging to the family of a Russian oligarch, unfurled a Ukrainian flag, and declared the property “liberated” and ready for refugees. Even countries as far as New Zealand have said Russian superyachts and aircraft would be barred from entering its waters and airspace under new sanctions legislation passed in response to the Kremlin invasion.

Walkthrough

The 120’ Crescent Risk & Reward was built in the Pacific Northwest area of Vancouver, Canada. This highly customized motor yacht had all design work performed by Jack Sarin and a team of craftsmen, with well over a hundred years of experience in the industry. During the time of her construction, the interior design was completed by Robin Rose. Since then and being with her third current owner, the interior has had a complete refit with new window treatments, stark wool carpeting and new wall coverings, and soft goods throughout. Her interior design and beauty has to be seen to be appreciated. Key features include raised panel mahogany cabinetry, a modest interior, motorized linen salon shades, and electric motion-detected salon entry doors. The state-of-the-art A/V system was upgraded in 2021.

Upon entry, the vessel can be accessed on the port or starboard side via the boarding ladder as well as boarding the aft swim platform to the aft deck area. The spectacular aft deck dining and lounge area is spacious and comfortable. A large teak dining table is surrounded by attractive teak ladder-back dining chairs and large built-in comfortable cushion seating. This area is also complemented by a full walkaround bar with a stone top, a teak Chicago-style bar rail, and four handsome polished stainless-steel barstools. The entire aft deck area is laid in teak all the way down the stairs to the swim platform. From the aft deck area you can access the flybridge, salon, and crew quarters. There is also access, via port and starboard, to a full walk around the exterior from bow to stern without having to enter the main cabin areas.

Entering the main salon from the aft deck you will pass through two large automatic glass doors. This living area is plush and appealing to the eyes from the moment of entering, beautifully redone in 2020 and 2021 with a new interior refit. Moving forward of the salon is the main interior dining area with seating for eight guests. There is large storage throughout this area for all service items needed. Continuing forward to the starboard companionway to the galley, there is a large sliding watertight door to access the walkaround deck area. The stairwell to the pilothouse access is passed on your way to the galley. Entering the beautifully remodeled country kitchen galley, you take in the light and bright dining area surrounded with all new soft goods, stone countertops and new stainless steel appliances. Most forward down the stairwell companionway is the luxuriously accommodating VIP stateroom and head.

Returning to the main salon portside, you will pass through the companionway with an exterior sliding door for walkaround deck access. Moving forward, you follow down the beautifully decorated stairway to the master and guest stateroom accommodations. The master stateroom is forward of the two guest staterooms with a laundry area at the base of the stairway, and foyer area. The master stateroom is provided with a king-size berth and spacious cabin space with a large private head. The port guest stateroom is provided with a queen-sized berth and large private head. The starboard guest stateroom has two large twin single berths, as well as a Pullman berth, with a private head.

Due to the international and fluid nature of the yachting business and the fact there is no global central industry listing service to which all charter yachts subscribe it is impossible to ascertain a truly up-to-date view of the market. We are a news and information service and not always informed when yachts leave the charter market, or when they are recently sold and renamed it is not clear if they are still for charter. Whilst we use our best endeavors to maintain accurate information, the existence of a listing on this website should in no way supersede official documentation supplied by representatives of a yacht.

The Cambridge University Boat Club women’s blue boat during a training session in freezing fog on the River Great Ouse in Cambridgeshire during February 2024.

Pulling together: how Cambridge came to dominate the Boat Race – a photo essay

The race along the River Thames between England’s two greatest universities spans 195 years of rivalry and is now one of the world’s oldest and most famous amateur sporting events. Our photographer has been spending time with the Cambridge University Boat Club over the past few months as they prepare for 2024’s races

T he idea of a Boat Race between the two universities dates back to 1829, sparked into life by a conversation between Old Harrovian schoolfriends Charles Merivale, a student at the time at St John’s College Cambridge, and Charles Wordsworth who was at Christ Church Oxford. On 12 March that year, following a meeting of the newly formed Cambridge University Boat Club, a letter was sent to Oxford.

The University of Cambridge hereby challenge the University of Oxford to row a match at or near London each in an eight-oar boat during the Easter vacation.

From then, the Cambridge University Boat Club has existed to win just one race against just one opponent, something Cambridge has got very good at recently. Last year the Light Blues won every race: the open-weight men’s and women’s races, both reserve races, plus both lightweight races – six victories, no losses, an unprecedented clean sweep. Cambridge women’s open-weight boat, or blue boat, has won the last six Boat Races while the men’s equivalent have won five out of the last seven. In such an unpredictable race, where external factors can play a large part, this dominance is startling.

Thames trials

Rough water as the two women’s boats make their way along the River Thames near Putney Embankment during the Cambridge University Boat Race trials.

It’s a mid-December day by the River Thames. The sky and water merge together in a uniform battleship grey and the bitter north wind whips the tops off the waves. Outside a Putney boathouse two groups of tense-looking women dressed in duck-egg blue tops and black leggings with festive antlers in their hair are huddling together, perhaps for warmth, maybe for solidarity. The odd nervous bout of laughter breaks out. For some of them this is about to be their first experience of rowing on the Tideway, a baptism of fire on the famous stretch of London water where the Boat Race takes place. “Perfect conditions,” remarks Paddy Ryan, the head coach for Cambridge University women, for this is trial eights day, when friends in different boats duel for coveted spots in the top boat.

A couple of hours later these women along with their male equivalents will have pushed themselves to the absolute limit, so much so that several of the men are seen trying to throw up over the side of their boats at the finish under Chiswick Bridge. This may be brutal but it’s just the start. For these students the next few months are going to be incredibly tough, balancing academic work with training like a professional athlete. Through the harshest months of the year they will be focused on preparing for the end of March and a very simple goal: beating Oxford in the Boat Race.

Two of the Cambridge University Boat Club women’s boats head out in the early morning for a training session on the Great Ouse, Cambridgeshire on 28 February 2024.

Ely early mornings

Two of the women’s boats head out in the early morning for a training session on the Great Ouse.

Early winter mornings on the banks of the Great Ouse, well before the sun has risen, can be pretty bleak. In the pitch black a batch of light blue minivans drop off the men and women rowers together at the sleek Ely boathouse that was opened in 2016 at the cost of £4.9m – it’s here that all Cambridge’s on-water training takes place. Very soon a fleet of boats carrying all the teams takes to the water for a training session that may last a couple of hours. Then it’s a quick change, a lift to the train station and back to Cambridge for morning lectures.

The Cambridge University Boat Club women’s squad are dropped off at their Ely boathouse by minibus at 6am for a training session on the Great Ouse.

The women’s squad head into the Ely boathouse after a 6am drop-off.

As a rower descends the stairs to the bays where the boats are stored, there is a clear indication of why it was built and why they are there. “This is where we prepare to win Boat Races,” a sign says. Since this boathouse was built, Cambridge have won 30 of the 37 races across all categories.

Below: One of the men’s teams set off for early morning training and the women’s blue boat rows past the women’s lightweight crew during a training session.

It’s a far cry from the old tin sheds with barely any heating and no showers. These current facilities are impressive, enabling the entire men’s and women’s squads to be there at the same time and get boats out.

But it’s not just the boathouse that has contributed so much, it’s also the stretch of water they train on. In a year when floods have affected so many parts of the country it has really come into its own. Paddy Ryan, the chief women’s coach, explains: “Along this stretch the river is actually higher than the surrounding land. The water levels are carefully managed by dikes and pumps. As a result we haven’t lost a single session to flooding. That’s not the case for Oxford. I believe their boathouse has been flooded multiple times this year, unable to get to their boats. We’ve had multiple storms but we’ve been able to row through them all.”

The men’s third boat practises on the Great Ouse.

It’s a flat, unforgiving landscape, especially in midwinter, definitely not the prettiest stretch of water, but Cambridge don’t care. Ryan says: “It might be a little dull on the viewing perspective but we could row on for 27km before needing to turn round. We have a 5km stretch that is marked out every 250m. We are lucky to have it.”

The old-fashioned Goldie boathouse is right in the centre of Cambridge perched on the banks of the River Cam. Built in 1873, its delicate exterior belies what goes on inside. This is the boat club’s pain cave, where the rowers sweat buckets, pushing themselves over and over again; it’s a good job the floor is rubberised and easy to wipe clean.

Brutal sessions on the various ergo machines, where thousands of metres are clocked and recorded, are a staple of the training regime set in place. If there is any slacking off the students just need to look up at one of the walls where a map of the Boat Race course hangs. The “S” shape of the Thames has been carefully coloured in the correct shade of blue and record timings for various key points on the course have been written in for both men and women. All but one record, and that one is shared, is held by Cambridge.

Four members of the men’s squad open up the doors of the Goldie boathouse looking out on the River Cam as they undertake a long session on the ergo machines.

Paddy Ryan, the women’s chief coach, talks to the women’s blue boat during a training session on the River Great Ouse in February.

A key ingredient in any successful team is the coaching. Cambridge’s setup is stable and well established. Paddy Ryan is the chief women’s coach, a genial, tall Australian, he has been part of the women’s coaching team since 2013. The care and devotion to his squad is perfectly clear. “I have my notebook next to my bed so I can jot things down. I wake up in the middle of the night going: am I making the right decisions? I care about them as people and I need to manage them … We joke as coaches that we are teaching some of the smartest people on the planet how to pull on a stick.”

Rob Baker, the chief men’s coach, has Cambridge rowing in the blood. Born and bred in the city, his father was a university boatman for 25 years. He even married into the sport – his wife, Hayley, rowed for Cambridge as a lightweight – so it was no surprise that he became part of the coaching setup way back in 2001. He was the first full-time women’s coach in 2015 then moved to take over the men in 2018.

Apart from an obvious role in the development of rowing skills, a key part of their job is making sure there is a balance for their student athletes. They understand they have to juggle training needs. “Every week we have a general plan,” says Baker, “but then someone might have an extra class or supervision they’ve got to do so we have to move around it. They are studying at one of the most competitive universities in the world with the highest standards so you’ve got to give them space to do that properly.” He goes on: “But when they get on the start line for their race, they’ll be just as competitive as if they were professionals.”

Jenna Armstrong and Seb Benzecry, the respective women’s and men’s presidents of Cambridge University Boat Club, hold a meeting to discuss their plans in the Great Hall at Jesus College on 5 March 2024.

The presidents

Jenna Armstrong and Seb Benzecry discuss their plans in the Great Hall at Jesus College.

Every year one man and one woman are elected presidents to represent Cambridge University Boat Club. They are the captains and leaders, not only responsible for helping design the training programme in conjunction with the coaches but also making budgetary and tactical decisions along the way. This year both of them, Jenna Armstrong and Seb Benzecry, are from the same college, Jesus, which helps the communication between the two of them. They share ideas and knowledge, thoughts and worries. Their lives, for these intense few months, are a juggling act.

Armstrong is a 30-year-old from New Jersey, and doing a PhD in physiology. Once a very keen competitive junior skier she was forced to abandon her hopes of a career on the slopes after a number of serious knee injuries. She only started rowing in 2011 and only became aware of the Boat Race when she saw it on TV a couple of years later.

Jenna Armstrong, cycling down the Chimney, the grand entrance to Jesus College, to go to the other side of the city to carry out more of her PhD research at the department of physiology, development and neuroscience.

The research she carries out at the university labs could be turn out to be life-saving. “I study mitochondrial function in placentas from women from all over the world to learn how genetic and environmental factors during pregnancy can influence placental metabolism and impact the health of both mother and baby. I’m particularly interested in growth restriction which affects about 10% of babies worldwide. That can have lifelong implications for these babies and currently we don’t have any treatment for this.”

Benzecry, 27, is studying for a PhD in film and screen studies, and comes from a completely different rowing background. He grew up just a stone’s throw from the Boat Race course and went to a school on the banks of the Thames. This will be his 14th year of competitive rowing but his fourth and last Boat Race.

“ I remember one year my birthday fell on race day and we watched after my birthday party. Because we live fairly close to the course, I’ve always felt connected to the race.”

Seb Benzecry, the men’s president of the Cambridge University Boat Club, stands next to an Antony Gormley statue in the Quincentenary Library at Jesus College as he conducts research for his dissertation as part of his PhD in film and screen studies.

Talking about how hard it is to get the right balance between academic student life and rowing, Benzecry says: “I guess you have to accept there are many, many things you can’t do, you just don’t have time for during the season. You have to put the blinkers on.”

Armstrong says: “I have to be very prepared, very strategic and organised. I pack everything the night before, and then once I leave my room in the morning, I don’t go back. That allows me to go to training, go to the lab, go to training again. It’s surreal actually, to come to a place like Cambridge, have one of the best educations in the world on top of the most incredible rowing experiences in the world. We have a thing now in the boat, when we are doing something incredibly hard, I say this is my ideal Saturday, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I would rather be here than in bed or on a date. And I make everyone else say it with me too. I’d rather be nowhere else.”

Benzecry states: “When it’s really bad, when training is so hard, we say Oxford aren’t doing this, they could never do this. It’s an incredibly powerful thing to be thinking we work harder than them, our culture is better than them. They don’t want to go hard as we do – they might think they do but they don’t, they just don’t have it.”

Integration

The men’s and women’s blue boats during a training session on the River Great Ouse in February.

Until 1 August 2020, there were three separate university boat clubs in Cambridge: one for open-weight men, one for lightweight men, and one for open-weight and lightweight women. Since they merged to become one club, it has undoubtedly helped with everyone sharing the same resources and motivating and inspiring one another. No one is more important and everyone has a key part to play in the result. This year, Oxford have followed suit.

Baker says: “I definitely feel, for the athletes themselves, it makes a big difference. They all feel like they’re contributing to one common goal. Every cog in the wheel has to do its job but for sure it feels like one big team on a mission.”

Benzecry explains: “We’re seeing each other train, we’re all out on the water at the same time, we’re supporting each other throughout the season, building a sense of momentum for the whole club towards the races. Everyone’s just inspiring each other all the time and I think that’s been such a sort of cultural shift for Cambridge.”

Siobhan Cassidy, the chair of the Boat Race, knows from first-hand how the integration has helped. She rowed for the Light Blues in 1995 and had a key role in the transition. “We could see the advantages of working together, collaborating as a bigger team, the positive impact we felt that could have on performance. But not just the output, actually the whole experience for the young people taking part.”

This Saturday, if the weather holds, an estimated 250,000 people, the vast majority of whom have no allegiance to one shade of blue or the other, will pack the banks of the Thames to see these races. It’s one of the largest free events in Britain. Broadcast live on BBC One, the race is also beamed to 200 countries across the world.

A sporting pinnacle being contested on a fast-flowing, unpredictable river by two teams of university students – it’s pretty bizarre. But maybe it’s that quirkiness that keeps the race, after almost two hundred years, still going strong. And even more bizarre to think that Cambridge, the current dominant force in the Boat Race, a sporting event that can’t shrug off its elitist stereotype, owes so much of that success to such egalitarian principles.
