• Yacht charter costs: how much can you expect to pay?

What are the total costs involved in chartering a yacht for a week? What are all the things I need to take into account when budgeting for a sailing holiday? We’ve put together a comprehensive guide to all costs, including a typical budget for a crew renting a sailing boat for one week.

Although our cost breakdown is primarily focused on the more popular sailing destinations ( Croatia and Greece ), it is will also give you a basic idea in the whole of Europe. Simply use the individual budget costs to work out your own budget for any voyage and destination.

What fees will you pay on top of the boat charter price?

• Marina/mooring fees 
• Transit log

• Skipper (if you don't have a license)

Marina fees

Mooring fees vary greatly and can range anywhere from € 20 per buoy to € 300 per day in an attractive location. In each country the charges are different and the amount depends on the length of the boat, the period, plus the attractiveness and facilities of each marina.

In a marina, it’s most expensive to moor at a pier , with the cheapest being at a buoy . City ports and piers or mooring at villages is cheaper and sometimes even free. You can also anchor in the wild and use marinas just to refuel or get water. You don’t have to pay at your home marina. In Greece or Italy you can also find mooring for free, especially off-season

Example of mooring fees in Croatia 

Rates are increasing each year. When booking a place at a marina itself, you usually pay 10 to 25 % more than the pricelist . In Croatia, due to the market environment and grey economy, it’s possible to pay a lot less (50 to 100 HRK), albeit unofficially.

Total consumption depends on the weather, wind strength and how much you want to sail over longer distances. The average consumption for a typical yacht usually ranges between 5 and 12 litres per hour.

Water for the tank

Consumption depends on the crew and the lifestyle on board. For most crews, refilling the tank once is enough for a week and for a typical boat in Croatia it costs around 100 to 150 HRK (€14–€20).

Travel to your sailing destination and back

Getting yourself to the boat itself is often the most expensive item to budget for. For a crew of 6, this would mean 2 cars or the price of flight tickets. And don't forget about motorway tolls or marina parking.

Eating out and groceries.

The budget depends on the willingness of the crew to cook and the desire to discover the local delicacies in restaurants. If you’re planning on mooring away from civilisation, count on buying food, water and beer in the store. In Croatia, restaurant prices tend to ne comparatively higher than in other countries. Our article Eat, drink, sail — What to eat on a boat is a great place to start for planning a menu for the whole crew, shopping for food at your destination and budgeting.

Mandatory charter fees

Compulsory fees are mostly paid along with the boat. They can come under various different names. For example, Transit Log,   Permit , Starter Pack or simply Cleaning . Mostly, we encounter a general "Transit Log", under which there are specific services. For example, in Croatia there may be bedding, fuel and various handling charges — these may include things such as scuba diving, check-in and check-out procedures, etc. The "Starter Pack" may include outboard engine or insurance, but each charter company is different (info is available when booking the boat). Sometimes final cleaning is included in the charges, but sometimes it is charged separately. On average, charges vary from €35–€180, and separate cleaning from €50–€150.

YACHTING.COM TIP: To give you a better idea of the specific mandatory fees in Croatia and Greece, for reference purposes we have chosen our clients' most popular boat,  the Bavaria 46 Cruiser.  I n Cro atia the Transit log for this sailboat is €175, and in Greece €170.

Tourist tax

In many countries there is a mandatory tourist tax. Currently in Croatia it is around 10 HRK or 1.35 EUR. 

Deposit insurance can seem like just an extra expense, but it can really pay off to take it out. It allows you to spend a vacation at sea without having to worry about losing your deposit, which can be thousands of Euros. When budgeting, you also have to take into account a refundable deposit of about €1,500-3500, which will ideally be refunded at the end of your voyage.

If you don't have a skipper’s license, you can order the services of a captain. This is usually around €150–⁠170 per day, plus you need to account for travel and meals.

Other fees and expenses

• Individual travel insurance
• Admission to national parks
• Renting an outboard motor, spinnaker or gennaker (some charter companies include the outboard motor in the price)
• Paddleboard rental (€100–⁠€120 per week)
• Charges for other activities, such as diving

Total yacht charter costs for a single crew

For reference purposes our example includes a recreational cruise budget for a single crew of 6 sailing in Dubrovnik in June with a captain was part of the crew (not paid separately). The crew ate mainly on board and didn’t often berth at a marina. Of course, your total costs may vary.

As you can see, the expenses are comparable to staying at a hotel, but with an unforgettable adventure.

The marina of Marina Yachting is situated in the port of Siracusa on the E coast of Sicily . The marina offers 180 berths for yachts up to 25.0 metres in depths of 15.0 metres. Shelter is only moderate in the afternoon see breeze, especially if moored on the outside of the wavebreak pontoon.

Communication

Call Marina Yachting on VHF channel 69.

The marina is situated on a series of floating pontoons to the north of the town quay of Ortigia. Visiting yachts are normally berthed on the outside of the wavebreak pontoon - especially during high season.

Marina staff will assist with berthing.

The nearby yard of Cantieri Navali di Targia has a slipway and can crane vessels of up to 25 T. Storage outdoors and indoors. Engine repairs. Electrical and electronic repairs. Wood, GRP and steel repairs. Sail repairs.

Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro

Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.

Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan

The historic Mactan Island in Cebu was the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines. Now known as a commercial hub that hosts a prolific furniture and musical instruments industries, Mactan is also the location of the Cebu Yacht Club, an institution that is beloved by the locals. I was invited to board a 24' sailboat that was docked here at Coastal Yachting and Marine. My main concern was parking since I wasn't too sure if I needed a permit to park on the residential streets... my concerns were immediately washed away as I rolled in and saw a good sized parking lot that had plenty of spaces left. As the captain of the boat walked out to greet me and guide me to the boat, I couldn't help but be in awe by some of the relics that were around me. The coolest thing I spotted was this super cute little blue truck. I asked the captain what it was for and he replied it's used to tug the boats. What!? That little thing? Well the saying is true, you can't judge a book by it's cover! While I love being the first to review a business on Yelp, I want to make sure I leave their page better than I found it. In addition to storage and docking, they also sell yachts, sailboats, powerboats and a ton of gear. -------- Here is some info that I found on their website (sadly I don't see any hours that I can post here): "Coastal Yachting Center is our Full Service Boatyard and Marina. We offer Summer Dockage that is convenient to Fire Island Beaches the Great South Bay's sheltered anchorages and to Fire Island Inlet for Offshore Fishing and Sailing.
