The Monaco Yacht Show 2023: A Round Up of the Top Stories

By Frances Flannagan

After a truly spectacular edition of the Monaco Yacht Show this year, we take a look at some of the top news stories from the event. From new launches, to concept designs, this year’s show featured a host of exciting industry updates.

The Monaco Yacht Show 2023 undoubtedly saw a range of exciting updates for the industry; we take a look at six of the top news that was unveiled during the show. We delve into the announcement of the launch of the first Amels 80, the unveiling of two concept designs from Feadship and Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, the reveal of Benetti's 85m project and Rossinavi’s 66m diesel electric ALCHEMY, as well as taking a look at Lürssen's 97m CARINTHIA VII following her 10-month refit.

The First Amels 80 Launched

On schedule to be delivered in 2025, the first Amels 80’s new hull and superstructure were spotted outside of her build shed. Described by Sean Bianchi, Partner and Head of New Construction at Burgess, and Naval Architect, as a yacht which will ‘stand out amongst her peers and set the benchmark for future yachts’, her launch was highly exciting news announced by the shipyard on the first morning of the yacht show.

Designed by Espen Øino, Amels 80 features a holistic and modern exterior design, in keeping with the Amels DNA. She also features sustainable materials and innovative hybrid technology, a key factor of the next-generation Amels' design.

‘The Amels 80 is a design that will not age. Her modern strong lines will look as good in 10 years as the day she is delivered. She is a big ship, full of features, with an impressive interior volume. She is everything and more that you would expect from an 80-metre yacht. There is a sense of scale, and nothing is wasted,’ commented Espen Øino.

Her interiors are custom-built, penned by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, with a neutral and natural palette, allowing for the owner to add their own personal style. She can accommodate up to 14 guests, who can enjoy a 200 square metres sun deck, a waterside beach club which opens on three sides and a wellness area and spa, to name a few of the fantastic amenities on board.

Benetti’s Full-Custom Espen Øino-Designed 85m Project Announced

PROJECT LIFE, Benetti’s new full-custom 85m, is a welcome addition to the Italian yard’s megayacht fleet. Her exteriors have also been penned by Espen Øino, who has injected Benetti’s distinctive characteristics into PROJECT LIFE’s design: the capacity to invent new lifestyles, offering varied interpretations of this concept across the decks. All spaces onboard are designed with sociability in mind, for instance, the large revolving lounge that changes its focal point depending on the time of day.

Her interiors have been designed by Francois Zuretti, who has chosen a beautiful balance between the colours and the surrounding environment, with an expanded opening that allows natural light to enhance the spaces.

PROJECT LIFE is built with all the available technologies to help reduce consumption, including diesel-electric propulsion and integrated hybrid solar panels that collect solar and thermal energy to power appliances onboard.

A Look Inside Lürssen’s 97m CARINTHIA VII Following Refit

Following a 10-month refit by Lürssen at its Hamburg facilities, the results of CARINTHIA VII’s extensive refit were revealed at this year's Monaco Yacht Show, where she was presented to the charter market for the first time, represented by Fraser.

She was designed by Tim Heywood, regarded by many as one of the world’s first true mega yachts. Kept largely hidden from industry over the last 21 years, with her interior rarely seen, her introduction to the charter market has been eagerly awaited, as has the results of her refit.

Her new work includes redesigned exterior decks, new lounge and living areas and a new 12m/39’ pool and 90sqm air-conditioned gymnasium. Her interiors are sophisticated and elegant, with beautiful wooden flooring pervading the design and neutral beige and browns contrasted with cool-tone hues of blues and stunningly clean white stylings. She is a true masterpiece and an unmissable offering to the charter market.

Embracing Sustainability: Feadship Debuts Project DUNES

DUNE takes a significant step towards Feadship’s goal of Net-Zero superyachts, combining features that reduce energy demand with technology that eliminates emissions and increases efficiency. Each individual element of the design assists in reducing environmental impact, for instance, shading windows to reduce cooling requirements, however, when implemented together, they slash a superyacht’s environmental impact dramatically.

Inspired by the aesthetics of sand dunes, this vessel reflects the onboard lifestyle that today’s owners desire, with flexible, multi-purpose spaces, endless views, and a combination of sociable open-plan areas with cosy, intimate spaces. She has an asymmetrical superstructure with almost no straight lines, meaning that spaces drift into one another, furthering the notion of flow throughout the yacht, and the heavy use of glass seamlessly blends the interiors with the surroundings.

Her design, along with all Feadship concepts, is a true joint effort between Feadship, Studio de Voogt and the yard's Knowledge and Innovation department. With a wealth of expertise and experience across all collaborators, the shipyard’s concept designs are able to be of the highest possible quality.

AWARE, The Essence of Luxury, Presented by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design

Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design presented the 79.9m yacht concept AWARE at the Monaco Yacht Show, a ready-to-build, fully operational concept with a 1600 mm scale model. Her design combines proven technology with innovation and the use of the most precious and durable materials. At the forefront of this design is space optimisation, with an abundance of space on board, vast exterior decks and an unparalleled inside-outside connection,

AWARE has been described as the ‘Essence of Luxury’: a logical step in yacht design in which all space is optimised to give guests on board the best possible experience. Sander Sinot, Designer at the firm commented:

‘For the design of AWARE the focus is on maximising the space on board within the yacht’s limited structure. We designed open plan layouts for the beach club, lounges and exterior decks that offer inherent flexibility and ample space while reducing the number of decks.’

With exceptional features to optimise the outside areas, including a beach club with a three-metre high ceiling, the interiors have similarly been designed to provide ultimate functionality and a spectacular inside-out experience. She is a tri-deck design with an open plan pavilion on the bridge deck, allowing for unrestricted views of the ocean on all sides.

Rossinavi’s 66m Diesel Electric Motor Yacht ALCHEMY

Unveiled at Port Hercules was Rossinavi’s 66m M/Y ALCHEMY, a fully custom design by Vitruvius Yachts with interior and exterior styling by Enrico Gobbi. She features diesel-electric propulsion, propelled by rods to reduce the loss of energy between the engines and navigation speed.

ALCHEMY is an elegant tri-deck design with a focus on the outdoor areas and wellness aspects of the yacht. With a spacious central corridor, the forward owner’s cabin offers a clear view of the sea, creating a sense of openness in the design alongside a strong connection to the surroundings. A special emphasis has been placed on ensuring comfort on board, in particular the minimisation of vibrations, meaning that every technical and material choice has been considered to reduce noise and vibrations.

The atmosphere throughout this vessel is calm and elegant, with every single piece of furniture being bespoke. Enrico Gobbi commented:

‘Spa mood was the keyword for the interior design and exterior decor of this yacht; natural materials, soft colours, and essential shapes for the interiors. Soft indirect lights to 'wet' the simplicity of the forms, where the detail and construction quality had to emerge and characterize the space: 'detail makes the differences' this is the motto that we have followed more than ever in this project together with the owners.’

The 32nd edition of the Monaco Yacht Show was as spectacular as ever, we can only begin to imagine the wonders that the 2024 event will hold.

Monaco Yacht Show: 27 - 30 September 2023

Copyright: Vladimir Drozdin

Press release – April 13, 2023

The Monaco Yacht Show officially announces the dates for its 32nd edition, which will take place from September 27th to 30th, 2023.

Considered the largest annual gathering of superyachts in the world, the event is a must-attend for private owners and new clients seeking a unique immersive experience in the yachting world.

Once again this year, the MYS will continue its three-year development programme "Seducation," with 2023 marking the consolidation of the first cycle.

The "Seducation" programme is an initiative designed in collaboration with the industry and is based on four essential pillars: environmental innovation, design, understanding of yachting, and visitor experience. The MYS organisers aim to make the show a true "ecosystem" of yachting, by promoting environmentally responsible innovation and offering visitors an immersive and educational discovery of the latest and most innovative yachting trends.

The ambitious objective of this programme is to strengthen the MYS's position as the international reference show for the luxury yachting industry, while offering an unforgettable experience to yacht and lifestyle enthusiasts.

Since 2021, the MYS has themed its exhibition, notably with the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub, the Sustainability Hub, the Adventure Area, and the Dockside Area, which allows privileged access to the show's docks for visitors interested in a yacht project.

The show will consolidate its first "Seducation" cycle by unveiling an impressive fleet of 120 superyachts and megayachts available on the market, including the highly anticipated 2023 launches. Visitors will also have the opportunity to discover the latest lifestyle trends on board a yacht, thanks to the exhibition of leading yachting companies. The Dockside Area and Adventure Area will also offer a complete immersion into yachting and related activities.

The MYS will also ensure the participation of driving force companies to present innovative and sustainable solutions in design and sustainability, highlighting eco-responsible technologies while offering an inspiring vision for yacht enthusiasts (Sustainability Hub, Yacht Design & Innovation Hub).

Finally, visitors can attend daytime conferences and receive information dedicated to future yacht clients. They can meet the best experts and most qualified professionals to help them realise their yacht project.

The Monaco Yacht Show strives to promote a unique experience for visitors, while enhancing the positive reputation and development of the yachting industry. An industry that has taken on its social responsibility with a proactive and committed approach for several years in economic, technological, and environmental development to meet current societal challenges.

The Ultimate Guide to the Monaco Yacht Show

Yachts in Hercule Harbour in Monaco

The Monaco Yacht Show is a four-day event that takes place each year in Monaco’s deepwater port, Port Hercules, and is Europe’s biggest in-water display of superyachts of over 20 metres long. At any time of the year, impressive yachts are moored in the principality’s harbour, but this annual trade show really does take luxury yachting to a whole new level.

125 one-off superyachts feature in the monaco boat show.

The Monaco Yacht Show was started in 1991 by the French entrepreneur Maurice Cohen and was most recently acquired by British event organiser Informa in 2005. Today, the show has grown to curate an exhibition of 125 superyachts, welcoming over 550 companies from the yachting industry and unveiling 45 new launches in a worldwide premiere.

How to be dazzled by the Monaco yachts

The Professional Pass is for professionals of the nautical and luxury markets and costs a cool €950, while the Sapphire Experience doesn’t come with a provided price tag, which gives you an idea of the kind of exclusive visit it is. It is reserved for future superyacht charterers or owners and more details and contact information are available on the event’s website .

In 2016, the Monaco Yacht Show introduced Car Deck, an exhibition space within the boat show to showcase luxury cars. Manufacturers have included Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Aston Martin and more. Take a look at the yacht show’s layout for information on entrances, lounges, refreshment areas and more.

Arrive by helicopter

In for a penny, in for a pound. Unsurprisingly, one of the most popular ways to travel to Monaco is by helicopter, which could be just what you’re looking for if planning an exclusive trip to the Monaco Yacht Show. Monacair links the Nice airport to Monaco in just seven minutes. In true Monaco fashion, seven minutes will set you back €130!

Monaco’s train station connects with Nice’s main station, too, which provides a slightly more affordable option and of course, you can drive to the principality, as long as the underground parking systems don’t put you off.

The most exciting new yachts at the Monaco Yacht Show 2023

The most exciting new yachts at the Monaco Yacht Show 2023

The countdown to the Monaco Yacht Show has well and truly begun as shipyards ready their latest launches for the highlight of the superyachting show season. If you're heading to Port Hercule in September, be sure to look out for these fresh-out-of-the-yard yachts making their grand debut...

Builder: Bilgin Length: 80m

With a scarlet hull and “sleek and sexy profile,” according to CEO and founder of Unique Yacht Design Emrecan Özgün, Leona is colloquially referred to as “the Red Bullet”. Her extravagant beach club pool is worth checking out, flanked by Greek statues sitting on water outlets and rigged with overhead fibre optic lights to give the appearance of the night sky. Her sistership is Tatiana , who made her Monaco Yacht Show debut in 2021.

Builder: Golden Yachts Length: 77.7m

With a vertical bow and trapezium-shaped windows, O'Rea carves quite the contemporary profile compared to predecessors O’Pari and O’Ptasia . More than 250 finishes are claimed to have been used throughout her interior, which is the result of a collaboration between Massari and Vafiadis , including polished marble and precious stones. The yacht will also be home to a collection of contemporary artworks, curated by Vasilis Dragnis in collaboration with Anna Chatzinassiou.

Builder: Rossinavi Length: 65.7m

Developed entirely over Zoom, Alchemy features a signature Vitruvius hull designed by French-born, London-based Philippe Briand . The tri-deck superyacht was built to fulfil an owner's brief for large al fresco areas and a strong focus on wellness. The result is over 330 square metres of outdoor space and plenty of amenities, including a jacuzzi and numerous sunpads.

Builder: Amels Length: 60m

Entourage is the second in the series of Amels Limited Edition 60 models designed in collaboration with Espen Øino . While the first hull in the series, Come Together , features distinctive geometric windows, the design team customised Entourage with long strips of glazing that allow additional light into the interior. Another noteworthy design choice is the extended bridge deck and sun deck which, first requested by the owner, will now be implemented in all future builds.

Builder: Sanlorenzo Length: 56.7m

This Monaco debutante is the second hull in the shipyard’s 57Steel series, delivering double the volume of its smaller sibling the 52Steel. She offers 1,000GT across her five decks and her showpiece is a 110-square-metre beach area, created by opening hatches on three sides that, when unfolded, become small beaches on the water’s edge.

Builder: Admiral Length: 55m

Silverstar marks the second hull in Admiral 's S-Force Series, and boasts a unique interior designed by Giorgio Armani and his team – reflected in the refined ivory onyx, cornflower blue marble, and Venetian printed silk. Sharing the same values on al fresco living as its sistership 55-metre Geco , she’s equipped with an open beach club at the stern, a sundeck with a Jacuzzi, and a touch-and-go helipad on the upper deck forward.

Builder: Turquoise Yachts Length: 53m

Miami-based studio DeBasto Design created this yacht’s distinctive sky-blue exterior, marking a first-time collaboration with the Turkish shipyard. “With Jewels’ enormous [720GT] volume, my objective was to make the exterior less bulky and give a feeling of a forward dynamic movement, rather than a static feel,” said designer Luiz DeBasto. The yacht is crowned by a generous sundeck with a spa pool, sunpads, TV, day head, bar and “acres of space”, according to Turquoise.

Baglietto T52

Builder: Baglietto Length: 52m

The flagship of Baglietto's sporty T-Line series, the Italian yard is set to debut its first hybrid T52 model at this year's show, designed by Francesco Paszkowski . She has an impressive range of 7,600 nautical miles and can remain at anchor for up to 10 hours relying on battery power alone. The new yacht reinterprets the classic Baglietto design with a restyled stern and open beach club, spanning two decks and featuring a pool with a changeable-depth floor.

Builder: Columbus Yachts Length: 50m

While Anjelif ’s brassy exteriors are sure to draw the crowd this year, her colouring is far from her only stand-out feature. She also boasts several technical innovations, such as an onboard sanitisation system that incorporates cold plasma for the elimination of airborne viruses and bacteria. An impressive recreational highlight is the touch-and-go helipad on the bow, which can convert to an open-air cinema when not in use.

Eternal Spark

Builder: Bilgin Length: 50m

With entertainment at the core of her design, Eternal Spark can host more than 100 guests quayside across her four decks, with five separate bars and seven distinct social areas. Her Hot Lab interiors feature pinkish quartz and a “light, fresh and sunny” atmosphere – “comparable to a villa on the Côte d’Azur”. The yacht's sunken-level beach club is bound to impress with a sauna, ice fountain, day head and lounge with a wet bar.

Builder: Tankoa Yachts Length: 50m

Retaining the same classic Paszkowski profile as sisterships Kinda and Olokun , Grey sports an appropriately “whisper grey” hull alongside a “jet black” superstructure. She is best known for her larger-than-usual, glass-sided swimming pool which comes alongside a high-definition cinema screen as per the owner’s request. Flanked by sofa seating, the screen also features integrated speakers and a surround-sound system courtesy of British-French brand Focal & Naim.

Builder: Benetti Length: 49.9m

Formerly FB606 and now christened Alunya, the 49.9-metre steel and aluminium yacht is the sixth unit in Benetti ’s B.Now 50M series. She launched less than two months after her sistership Lady I and is fitted with Benetti’s signature ‘Oasis deck’ – where the outdoor living area offers 270-degree views from the stern of the vessel. Large sunpads and a glass-walled infinity pool complete the space.

Builder: ISA Yachts Length: 45m

This semi-custom model stands out with her strong, sporty profile designed by Enrico Gobbi – Team for Design and turquoise and gold Luca Dini interiors. Designed to entertain large parties, UV II is fitted with an extra wide beach club, a custom bar on the sundeck and a €1,000,000 state-of-the-art sound system integrated by Videoworks.

Builder: Conrad Shipyard Length: 44.3m

Poland’s largest superyacht, Ace ’s distinctive “rolling wave” superstructure is a signature of British designer Reymond Langton . Her centrepiece is the 25-metre-long sundeck, made complete with a 2.5-metre cinema screen and recessed infinity pool (so as not to block the view). Fun fact: the pool’s micro-mosaic is courtesy of Nero Sicilia, made with glass recycled from old television and computer screens.

Builder: Sanlorenzo Length: 44m

The X-Space 's “extra private” design was first revealed in 2021, with one of her five decks dedicated entirely to the owner. Featuring an apartment, study, living room and large master cabin, the cabin leads directly onto a private terrace at the bow flanked by a 30-square-metre sunbed area and swimming pool. Another special feature – the yacht is “almost entirely made of glass”, with glass panes and large windows featured throughout and most portholes in cabins replaced with “glass walls”.

Builder: Tecnomar Length: 43.5m

This highly secretive project is expected to make its grand reveal at the Monaco Yacht Show this year. Little is known about it so far.

Builder: Bilgin Yachts Length: 42m

Kaşif, which translates to "explorer" in Turkish, is the first vessel to emerge from its Turkish shipyard's new Antalya facility and was built for a repeat client of the shipyard. She is the ninth collaboration between Bilgin and Unique Yacht Design with interiors by Hot Lab. Preliminary imagery of her fully custom interiors shows curvy architectural lines, a soft-coral colour scheme and 70s-style, curved sofa seating.

White Island

Builder: Aegean Yacht Length: 39.2m

This 261GT, steel and aluminium ketch was developed entirely by the Bodrum-based yard, including the concept, layout, naval architecture, marine engineering, and both the exterior and interior design. White Island' s wide saloon windows allow for airy, bright interiors rarely seen in others of her category.

Builder: Pershing Length: 35.2m

The first hull in the Pershing's sporty GTX116 series was commissioned by a US-based owner who said he had spent “years” looking for the perfect yacht for cruising in Miami. Characterised by a streamlined profile that reflects the GTX116’s sporty capacities, the yacht borrows design cues from the Gran Turismo automotive imagery. Her 39-square-metre beach club is worth calling attention to – connected to the swim platform by an electro-hydraulic taffrail, it creates a waterfront lounge area.

Builder: Nautor Swan Length: 35m

The first Swan 108, named Fancy , is one of a handful of sailing yachts making their worldwide debut at the Monaco Yacht Show this year. Built with a carbon hull and a deck made from epoxy Sprint technology, the model is hailed as the first in a new generation of Maxi Swans and plugs the gap between the Swan 98 and the Swan 120 flagship.

Builder: Cantiere delle Marche Length: 35m

Nuri’ s smaller sister Stellamar may have an aesthetic well-suited to Mediterranean cruising, but under the hood she is a souped-up, world-girdling explorer with an “invisible crane” for toys and tenders and an impressive 5,500-nautical-mile range. She is owned by an architect who helped shape the yacht’s nature-inspired, Francesco Paszkowski interiors – and no doubt advocated for the master cabin’s sauna and hammam.

Builder: Gulf Craft Length: 34.1m

The first unit in the UAE-based shipyard's Majesty 111 series, Sandbank , is set to make her European debut at the Monaco Yacht Show after she was presented to the world in Dubai earlier this year. With exterior and interior by Phathom – marking the studio's first on-the-water project – a highlight of the yacht’s design is its focus on natural light. Gulf Craft claims the Majesty 111 has up to 40 per cent more glazing than yachts of comparable size. This is particularly evident in the owner’s cabin, which sits below a glass-floored dip pool that sends cascades of light into the cabin below. The new model slots between the existing Majesty 100 and Majesty 120 models.

Builder: Arcadia Yachts Length: 29.3m

The first Arcadia A96 is fitted with “environmentally friendly” Waveless Stab40 stabiliser fins and solar panels that allow her to cruise between eight to nine hours in silent mode. Interiors are by Igor Lobanov , with a focus on eco-friendly, natural furnishings and a “multi-flexible” layout that makes full use of its 8.7-metre beam and 400 square metres of usable space.

Builder: Mazu Yachts Length: 28.5m

The Mazu 92DS marks the Turkish shipyard's first foray into steel construction and is the first in a new semi-displacement series which will soon be followed by a 112 DS and 132 DS model. “I think we’ve created something amazing,” said Mazu founder and designer Halit Yukay. “The interior volumes and full-height windows make you feel like you’re on a yacht that is at least 10 metres longer.” Exterior and interior styling are by Red Yacht Design .

Builder: Bolide Yachts Length: 24.9m

Described as a “hyper muscle yacht”, Bolide 8 0 is one of the fastest superyachts in the world – reported to make blistering speeds of around 73 knots during sea trials in mid-April. She’ll mark the first iteration in the Bolide project, made up of a limited fleet of nine models. Hull one is defined by her juxtaposing black and punchy orange palette, reflective of its sporty nature in both aesthetics and aerodynamic performance

Sunreef 80 Eco

Builder:   Sunreef Yachts Length: 23.8m

Custom-built for an experienced family of environmentally-minded yacht owners, Sunreef 80 Eco hails from Polish catamaran specialist Sunreef Yachts . She is the first in a new generation of eco-catamarans, and has been dubbed the “world’s most advanced electric motor yacht” – equipped with batteries that, according to the yard, are 30 per cent lighter than the average batteries used.

Builder: Bluegame Length: 22.7m

Solar-powered multihull BGM75 is the first of a new series of ‘BGM’ multihull yachts from Bluegame. While she may have the appearance of a monohull, she delivers on the benefits of a catamaran – increased stability, large volumes, and reduced fuel consumption. The futuristic yacht is also capable of generating 5kW of green energy thanks to 56 solar panels that can be installed on the deckhouse.

Explorer Dock inaugurated at Monaco Yacht Club

Explorer Dock inaugurated at Monaco Yacht Club

The inauguration ceremony of the first Explorer Dock took place at the Yacht Club de Monaco earlier this week, as part of the activities planned for the Ocean Week and under the aegis of ‘Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting.’

The seven yachts displayed on the quay of the Club, M/Y Beyond Capricorn, M/Y Prometej, M/Y Audace, M/Y King Benji, S/Y NDS Evolution, M/Y U Boat Navigator and M/Y Santandrea, represent a combination of passion for adventure and innovation. Each one is designed to navigate beyond traditional boundaries and face the challenges of the oceans.

Capturing everyone’s attention on the quay was the christening of the brand new M/Y King Benji. Attending the event dedicated to the 46 metre megayacht, built by Dunya Yachts and designed by Greg Marshall, were many guests alongside the Yacht Club de Monaco General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri.

“I am very humbled and proud to be here because it took years to build this yacht. It required a lot of passion, dedication and team work with Greg Marshall and other designers. And finally she’s here and we’re proud of it,” said Sedat Ergun, owner of Dunya Yachts. “We’re thriving to be a custom builder, we’re building many different yachts. Everyone’s different from each other. We love exploration. So when the client came to us, we loved it and we got on well since day one. It actually is a funny story because he came in as a crew member so we didn’t know he was the client. We talked about it and I said ‘we love the project’ and I think he felt the passion about it,” he added. Everything started from a sketch. “I flew to a meeting with the owner and he described what he was looking for and why he couldn’t buy it anywhere in the world. So I pulled out a piece of paper and just started drawing and in the first minutes he said ‘that’s it.’”

“We adjusted the sketches and it was just what you see here and it never happens. The boat is what I’d design for myself. We had a full-sized mock up build of the boat so we could walk through it 4-5 years ago. And now to see it here surrounded by the Yacht Club it just makes your skin tingle,” said Greg Marshall.

The Environmental Symposium, a day of conference for the industry, owners and captains, took place on Thursday, March 21, organised in collaboration with The Explorer’s Club of New York.

A large delegation from the US is visiting the Club and taking part not only in all the ‘explorer’ activities on the quay but also in regattas, sailing experiences involving for example the YCM flagship Tuiga.

On Thursday and Friday the Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous took place, organised in partnership with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and YCM, a natural extension of the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous.

Everything You Need To Know About The Monaco Yacht Show 2023

Ricky Franklin

  • October 2, 2023

Over the past three days, the biggest names in international luxury yachting  came together to witness the breathtaking sight of some of the world’s largest and most expensive superyachts gathered in one port. The Monaco Yacht Show took place between September 27 and 30 and attracted a staggering 30,000 visitors to the small country on the French Mediterranean coast. It was surely the most glamorous event in the cruising enthusiasts calendar.

Now in its 32nd edition, this prestigious superyacht show attracts prospective buyers, designers, builders, suppliers, brokers and superyacht enthusiasts from across place in the world.

New Arrivals

This year’s impressive superyacht lineup – yachts over 80 feet (24 meters) in length – includes the 43-metre electric catamaran “This Is It,” built by Tecnomar – the Italian Ocean Yacht Group, and the superyacht catamaran “The world’s largest sailboat,” Art Explorer – a museum. The boat – capable of holding up to 2,000 people per day – was built at the Italian shipyard Perini Navi. So, being here at the yacht show is quite unique.

A New Found Focus On Sustainability

Another superyacht launched this year is the 52-metre Baglietto T52, the first in the Italian shipyard Baglietto’s T52 series to feature hybrid propulsion, along with the 49.9-metre “No Stress Two,” Rossinavi’s first hybrid boat. Delivered earlier this year, the 60-metre “Entourage,” the second superyacht in yacht manufacturer Amels’ 60 series, is also on display for the first time. Dutch shipbuilder Heesen will display four yachts, Amare II, Aurelia, My Loyalty, and VanTom, at the event, while German shipbuilder Lürssen’s line-up includes the 97-metre “Carinthia VII,” the largest yacht revealed, and “Lady,” which is 91 meters long. “Lara” is for sale for £243.1 million.

Market State

According to the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show Market Report published by SuperYacht Times, there were 5,695 superyachts over 30 meters in length in operation as of mid-August. However, after record sales in 2021, the market is showing signs of slowing down. The report went on to say that new yacht sales were down 34% in early September, while used yacht sales were down about 25%. “While the numbers will improve, market performance will certainly lag 2022, which was a much slower year following the exceptional market peak in 2021,” the report noted.

Meanwhile, data from superyacht market source BOATPro indicates that the brokerage market sees the total value of superyachts sold increase by 20% in 2022, while aggregate asking prices of yachts sold by brokers also decreased. Pizzardini attributed the decline in sales to the “carpe diem mentality” some customers seem to have about having fun on cruise ships during the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the Yacht Club de Monaco the inauguration ceremony of the first Explorer Dock

MONACO, March 21, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Combining adventure and innovation. From the famous naval architect pencil also came out the M/Y Artefact, that won the YCM Explorer Award in 2022.

Meanwhile everything’s ready for the Environmental Symposium. A day of conference for the industry, owners & captains, taking place on Thursday the 20th of March, organised in collaboration with The Explorer’s Club of New York. A large delegation from the US is visiting the Club and taking part not only in all the ‘explorer’ activities on the quay but also in regattas, sailing experiences involving for example the YCM flagship Tuiga. In the afternoon it will be time for the Explorer Awards by La Belle Classe Superyachts. The aim is to recognise owners who take their environmental responsibilities seriously. The major criteria for these awards are the owner’s conception of their superyacht, how they use it and what it can do for humanity. It could be a technical innovation that significantly reduces the yacht’s CO2 emissions, the assistance given to scientists, or just an ability to pass on and share adventures at sea so that many more people come to respect, love and protect the Ocean.

On Thursday and Friday the Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous also will be on. Organised in partnership with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and YCM, it is a natural extension of the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous.

Monaco Yacht Show: U-Boat Worx reveals underwater superyacht concept Nautilus

By Nina Done   11 October 2022

Dutch builder U-Boat Worx presented their thrilling new 37.5m (123ft) underwater superyacht concept to lucky visitors at the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 .

Dubbed Nautilus , the 1,250-ton diesel-electric vessel is a new class of hybrid submarine coupled with superyacht luxury with a range of on-board facilities. Capable of depths of up to 200m, the superyacht submarine will be able to remain underwater for up to 4 days.

With a series of 4-meter wide circular windows for spectacular underwater vistas, the proposed design features 50 sq. m of lounge and dining space, with acommodation comprising a master bedroom and 4 staterooms, plus sleeping quarters for up to 6 crew. This layout can be fully customisable by the client.

U-Boat Worx Nautilus concept

With the Nautilus, the yachting market will never be the same again.

Capable of functioning as a yacht, Nautilus will also feature a retractable sundeck when afloat, replete with a pool, bar and dining option, offering guests an alfresco haven in which to relax and socialise while taking in the beautiful water-level views of their surroundings.

As an added bonus, the superyacht sub easily combats seasickness. “If the sea becomes too rough,” says U-Boat Worx Chairman and Founder Bert Houtman, “you simply dive and continue your voyage in comfort. With the Nautilus, the yachting market will never be the same again.”

The yacht submarine will also contain a pressure-resistant electrical tender for transporting up to 5 scuba divers underwater to their intended dive spot. When not in use, this tender can be stowed under the vessel’s aft deck.

U-Boat Worx Nautilus concept

Nautilus will have a surface cruise speed of 9 knots, with an underwater speed of 4 knots. At cruise speed, the underwater endurance is 6 hours. Her 6.5-meter draft will also allow her to be docked quayside when not in use.

U-Boat Worx also confirmed an impressive delivery time of within 30 months from the client's initial order.

To learn more about U-Boat Worx superyacht concept Nautilus , or renting a yacht with a personal submarine , please reach out to your preferred yacht charter broker for more information.

Each September, thousands of yacht builders, designers and owners descend on Port Hercule for the Monaco Yacht Show. It is here, in the heart of the picturesque Côte d’Azur, that boat lovers make their annual pilgrimage to catch a glimpse of the world’s newest – and most exciting – vessels.

This year, the hotly anticipated event took place between September 28 and October 1. And, following a summer of record demand for superyachts spurred by the pandemic, the 2022 iteration was bigger and glitzier than ever.

With over 600 exhibitors showcasing 125 superyachts, there was no shortage of incredible boats on display. So, whether you’re considering taking the plunge and purchasing a yacht of your own, or you’re simply here to marvel at the latest builds, we’ve rounded up the most impressive vessels on display at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

Project TIME

Project TIME yacht exterior

Kicking off our list of the biggest reveals at the Monaco Yacht Show is Project TIME. The 282-ft explorer yacht concept is the brainchild of German shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen and Valentin Design.

Suited for cold and warm water expeditions, the ship has been designed to travel everywhere from Antarctica to the South Pacific Islands. Powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system, Project Time would deliver a maximum speed of 16 knots, with a cruising speed of 14 knots, and a range of 5,000 nautical miles.

Boasting a helipad platform, submarine, two lounges and even an onboard German brewery, this is no ordinary yacht. The extravagant vessel also features an extra wide owner’s duplex suite complete with two marble bathrooms and an expansive balcony.

Dutch shipyard Feadship unveiled its eleventh cutting-edge yacht concept at the show, Slice. Studio de Voogt was brought in for the project, with the ambitious goal of turning “the inside out and the outside in”. To this end, the design team fitted the yacht with a glass strip running from bow to stern, bathing the decks in natural light.

Unlike many yachts that are plagued by gloomy corridors and claustrophobic living spaces, the interiors onboard Slice are bright and breezy. At the heart of the yacht on the main deck is a sprawling 750-sq-ft atrium flanked by cascading circular balconies, which, according to Feadship is so much more than a lobby and instead becomes “a destination in its own right”.

In a sign of Feadship’s dedication to using the latest technology, Slice would be fitted with a propulsion system powered by four dual-fuel generators modified to run on both methanol and non-fossil diesel (hydrotreated vegetable oil), with the generated power delivered to two Azimuthing pods.

Luisine yacht with helicopter

Our list of the best superyachts on display at Monaco Yacht Show would not be complete without mentioning Lusine. The 196-ft vessel is Heesen’s largest ever steel Fast Displacement motor yacht and features a sleek silhouette with black thermo-bonded dark glass windows to keep out prying eyes.

Perhaps most impressive of all is the touch-and-go helipad on the sundeck which can accommodate an Airbus H-135. Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design was brought in to mastermind the lavish interiors. Lusine comfortably sleeps twelve set across six spacious staterooms, each of which has been thoughtfully adorned with bespoke furnishings and elegant sculptures. The most exclusive abode is the owner’s apartment located up on the bridge deck which has its own staircase to ensure total privacy.

Come Together

Come Together yacht

Next up on our list is the first vessel in Amel’s new 60 Limited Edition Series. Designed by Espen Oeino International and built in the Netherlands, Come Together was delivered to her owner this Spring for an estimated €69.5m (approx. $68.6m).

The gleaming new superyacht spans 196 ft and features a teak deck, steel hull and aluminum superstructure. Winch Design is responsible for the laid-back yet elegant interiors that are reminiscent of a relaxed family home in shades of walnut and bronze.

Come Together has been fitted with a hybrid propulsion system for smooth, quiet cruising and features an expansive sun deck and 157-ft swim platform.

Winch Design and Heesen also unveiled XV67 at the Monaco Yacht Show – a brand new explorer yacht concept that builds on their XVenture design concept from four years ago.

The 187-ft vessel has been given a refreshed layout and updated with the latest technology. While the robust steel hull remains, she is 32 ft longer than her predecessor and the tenders have been moved to the open aft deck freeing up space for even larger guest cabins and an expansive three-story master stateroom.

As seems to be becoming commonplace onboard the newest superyachts, VX67 boasts a helipad (that functions as an al fresco cinema when not in use) and has space to store a personal submarine on deck.

Meyer took the Monaco Yacht Show as an opportunity to share the very first renderings of its sustainable One50 concept. The vessel – which was first unveiled a year ago at the 2021 show – is powered electrically by 25,000 kilowatts enabling her to reach a maximum speed of 23 knots.

After a year long wait to see what One50 could like, the renderings certainly don’t disappoint. Wellness is at the heart of the design; the 492-ft yacht features a retractable swimming pool, massage parlour, sauna and hammam. Other highlights include the top deck which is reserved entirely for the owner’s use and boasts an enormous suite complete with a private terrace.

Four Seasons Yacht

four seasons yacht rendering

Last but by no means least on our roundup of the most impressive vessels unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show is Four Seasons’ first branded yacht . Slated to set sail at the end of 2025, no expense has been spared by the luxury hotel group, with each suite costing a cool $4.2m to build.

The gigantic vessel will be 679 ft long and 88.6 ft wide with 14 decks and a total of 95 rooms and suites. While the initial launch is just one yacht, the order includes the option to add two further ships in the future – amounting to an eyewatering $1.1bn.

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri will build the Four Seasons yacht in Trieste before Tillberg Design of Sweden and London-based Martin Brudnizki are brought in to put their stamp on the interiors. As you would expect from the luxury hotel brand, the yacht will feature an array of facilities including gourmet restaurants, bars, and a full-service spa.

From the latest launches to the finest yachts currently for sale, we take a look at the top supersized sailing yachts that will be making an appearance at the 2023 edition of the Monaco Yacht Show later this month.

White island.

Length:  39m Builder:  Aegean Yacht

white island sailing yacht monaco yacht show

Not currently for sale

White Island  is one of the latest custom creations from Turkish shipyard Aegean Yacht. Her neoclassic design is a modern take on a traditional gulet with two masts, a raised deckhouse and a long bowsprit. A 261GT interior sleeps 10 guests.

Length:  35m Builder:  Nautor Swan

swan 108 sailing yacht monaco yacht show

The suitably named  Fancy  is the first in a new line of Swan Maxis. The new Swan 108 plugs the gap between the Swan 98 and the Swan 120 flagship with modified exterior styling by Micheletti + Partners and naval architecture by German Frers. One of the more noticeable evolutions is the yacht’s dual-acting transom door, which sees the stern open along with part of the aft deck to create a generous waterfront beach club, offering nearly double the space than on previous Maxis. A second unit is already underway at the Finnish shipyard.

Length : 29.7m Builder : YYachts

bella sailing yacht monaco yacht show

The new flagship of YYachts,  Bella , will make her first appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show this year following delivery in November 2022. She is the first unit in the shipyard’s Y9 series designed by Bill Tripp and eclipses its former flagship,  Prevail , by 2.3 metres. Built entirely in carbon fibre, she is a performance cruiser and has been carefully designed to sail with as little as two crew, with the mainsheet centred on the bimini top keeping the social cockpit clear of sheets.

Length : 53m Builder : Alloy Yachts

drumbeat sailing yacht monaco yacht show

Drumbeat  was built for an experienced yachtsman and delivered in 2000 as the second in the  Salperton  dynasty. Not only was she the biggest boat ever built by shipyard Alloy Yachts, but she was the largest yacht to be built in New Zealand. Designed by Ed Dubois, she is fitted with a carbon ketch Panamax rig that flies 2,400 square metres of sail downwind.  Drumbeat  has had the same owner since 2007 but is now offered for sale.

Drumbeat  is listed for sale with Atalante asking €22,000,000.

State of Grace

Length:  39.4m Builder:  Perini Navi

monaco university yacht

State of Grace  was launched in 2013 as the first of Perini Navi’s 40m Fast Cruising series, a collaboration between Perini Navi and Ron Holland. Her sailing credentials include a 51.8-metre Southern Spars mast, captive reel winches that can hold 12 tonnes and rewind 35 metres of sheets per minute and a lifting keel that reduces her draught from nine to 3.5 metres. Inside, she has a split-level saloon, sleeps six, and is offered for sale following a refit and upgraded interior.

State of Grace  is asking €11,750,000 with Cecil Wright & Partners.

Length : 43.3m Builder : Baltic Yachts

The brief for  Canova  was for the ultimate cruiser with a design that prioritised comfort, enabled short-handed sailing, and offered plenty of shade in the cockpit. Twin helm stations are positioned close to the bulwarks for forward visibility; the mainsheet track is set out of harm’s way on the coachroof, well-distanced from guests and crew; and a self-tacking jib is sheeted forward of the mast to avoid flailing sheets sweeping the side decks. What’s more, she has a hybrid engine and DSS foil which makes her uber-efficient. The Baltic Yachts and Farr Yacht Design collaboration won Sailing Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards.

Sunreef 80 Eco

Length : 23.9m Builder : Sunreef Yachts

Sunreef 80 Eco monaco yacht show

Sunreef’s 80 Eco model combines catamaran comfort with an impressive list of green tech – including solar panels on every surface. The “eco” version of Sunreef’s bestselling catamaran can run for days, weeks or even months without burning a drop of fossil fuel – enough to cross an ocean – thanks to a powerful 200-square-metre, fully battened main and a 155-square-metre jib, variable pitch propellers that generate energy under sail, and up to 160 square metres of solar panels.

‘A Day of Exploration’ at the Yacht Club de Monaco

A Day of Exploration’ at the Yacht Club de Monaco

‘ A Day of Exploration’. It is the title of the Environmental Symposium organised by the Yacht Club de Monaco in collaboration with The Explorers Club of New York. Thisconference took place under the aegis of its ‘Monaco Capital of Advanced Yachting’ approach and as part of Monaco Ocean Week, organised by the Prince Albert II Foundation and the Monaco Government, in partnership with the Monaco Oceanographic Institute & Scientific Centre of Monaco.

MONACO, March 22, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ‘A Day of Exploration’. Contributions from many famous scientists and explorers such as Nina Lanza, Kathryn Sullivan, Victor Vescovo, Mike Horn, Bertrand Piccard and many more were the highlight of the day. The event was attended by the Prince of Monaco Albert II who said: “The tradition of exploration is so deeply entrenched in the history of our Principality and inherited from my great-grandfather, Prince Albert the 1 st , reminds us of the urgent need to safeguard our marine envinronment and give it all the respect and devotion it warrants”.

“Today is a very special day because for the first time we have gathered an exceptional fleet of seven explorer yachts in the YCM Marina and at the same time we received the New York Explorer Club. A large delegation of around 150 people came to visit us here at the Club and to us it’s important to have them here because we need to know more about the Planet, the ocean and their beauty. If you want to protect something, it is fundamental to have a deep knowledge of it”, said the Yacht Club de Monaco General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri.

A multidisciplinary, professional society dedicated to the advancement of field research, scientific exploration and resource conservation, the Explorers Club has its the headquarter in New York City with a community of chapters around the world. It has been supporting scientific expeditions of all disciplines, uniting the members in the bonds of good fellowship for more than a century. “The Explorers Club is the leading exploration society in the world. It was founded in 1904. Women joined the club in the 1980s and it’s a really place where people come together”, underlined Richard Wiese, president of the Explorers Club. Notable members include Jane Goodall, Kathryn Sullivan, Jeff Bezos, Walter Cronkite, James Cameron, Sylvia Earle, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, The Apollo 11 crew of Neil Armstrong, Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin and Michael Collins, The Mount Everest summit team of Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, the first team to descend to the Mariana Trench Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard, the crews of the first expeditions to the North and South Poles.

Discovering as a way to build a better world it’s the common trait of the different experiences shared during the panels held through the day. Nina Lanza, planetary scientist, fulfilled her childhood dream of working on a spaceship. She’s the lead for the ChemCam instrument onboard the NASA Curiosity rover, she’s on the science team for the NASA Perseverance rover and working with a spacecraft which is going to the Moon as well. “I really think that exploration is a leap of imagination. We’re looking for the unknown so we really can’t plan. We do our best to hypothesize what we might discover and we always find new things which I think it’s the most exciting part of my job”, said Lanza.   The symposium was also the occasion to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Bertrand Piccard historic Breitling Orbiter 3 expedition, the first non-stop global circum navigation in a balloon. Piccard has also circumnavigated the world on a solar powered plane,   a 43,000 kilometer flight . “Today I’m not only celebrating an anniversary but also announcing a new project which is a hydrogen powered aeroplane to fly nonstop around the world”, said Piccard. He will be joined in the 2028 project, Climate Impulse, by French engineer and fellow adventurer Raphaël Dinelli, who is supervising design and construction of the aircraft and will navigate the nine-day, non-stop journey around the equator.   Piccard has a message for new generations: “I would tell to young people: stop to rely on habits, certitudes, old beliefs. You have to know that you can achieve what other people think it’s impossible and the main job for an explorer right now is to find new solutions. Solutions exist, they need to be discovered”. The Yacht Club de Monaco continues its programme hosting the 2 nd Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous to promote sustainable and adaptable solutions for large yachts (over 24 meters). This event organized in collaboration with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, will bring together innovation experts, architects and yachting enthusiast from around the world. The Rendezvous is a unique platform for collaboration and discovery of the smart, sustainable sustainable technologies shaping the future of yachting.

Ancient humans had piercings, archeologists in Turkey find

STORY: Archeologists say stone ornaments found at an 11,000-year-old burial site in Turkey prove humans have been piercing their bodies since prehistoric times. The items were found close to a skeleton's ears and lips... allowing experts to conclude for the first time they would definitely be used as piercings, says Emma Louise Baysal, an archeology professor at Ankara University and co-author of an article on the ornaments."I think it shows we share similar concerns with the way that we look and that these people were also thinking hard about how they presented themselves to the world. What we're trying to understand is exactly how that worked.”Stone ornaments have been found on several digs in the Fertile Crescent, but it's not been clear what they were used for. The discovery was made at the Boncuklu Tarla site in modern day eastern Turkey. It was established around 11,000 years ago by a group of hunter-gatherers who gradually settled. The facial ornaments are associated with people who are adults, Baysal says, and might have been used as a rite of passage or initiation into a different role in the community. Wear on the lower teeth of the skulls indicates some would have had lip piercings while they were alive. “It solves a problem that everybody was unsure about, which is what exactly these things were used for. So now everybody in the whole area can reinterpret their materials." // "So it's always a kind of large scale effort in archeology. I think that's the importance, putting everything together like a giant jigsaw puzzle."
