A-Z of motor boats: your ultimate guide

  • A-Z of motor boats: your ultimate guide

Motor boats don't often take centre stage in our magazine, but we're about to change that. This in-depth feature explores the different kinds of motorboats, their manufacturers, how they differ from sailboats, and weighs their pros and cons. We'll help you figure out if a motorboat is the right fit for you, when to best venture out on one, and we'll delve into the requirements and conditions for a skipper's licence. In essence, we're bringing you the complete motorboat rundown. All hail the engine!

Differences to a sailboat

The age-old debate of powerboat versus sailboat is a classic theme in many a nautical conversation. We're not here to pick a side between those who favour sails and those who prefer motors. Instead, our aim is to present you with a balanced view, packing all the necessary facts, insights, and knowledge into one comprehensive discussion.

Draft and bridges

A motorboat's draft is significantly shallower, thanks to the absence of a keel. Furthermore, the lack of a mast means there's no need to worry about the boat's height when it comes to passing under bridges. So from a depth and overhead clearance perspective, you're in safe waters with a motorboat.

YACHTING.COM TIP: If you've never sailed under the renowned Pasman-Ugljan bridge, which has spelled disaster for numerous sailing boats, a motorboat provides the perfect chance!

Space and comfort

Broadly speaking, aside from mega yachts or specialist vessels, motorboats provide more space both below and on deck compared to similarly sized sailboats. They also typically feature multiple deck levels. So you can bask in the sunshine on one deck, and find shelter in the shade on another. Furthermore, on a motorboat, you don't have to fret about a precarious jib or the risk of tripping over winches or ropes. The deck tends to be more open and free from sailing gear, allowing for easier movement and relaxation.

If you have crew members who do not tolerate the heeling of a sailboat well, this concern is completely eliminated with motor boats. Unless you're faced with sizeable waves, the boat is likely to maintain stability and you won't need to worry about any significant tilting. This makes a motorboat a more comfortable choice for those sensitive to the motion of the sea.

heel of a sailing ship

You wouldn't find such a load on a motorboat

A leisure sailboat simply can't match the speed of a powerboat. While most sailboats average around 7 knots, motorboats can easily reach 15 to 20 knots. If you enjoy the thrill of speed and the feeling of wind in your hair, a powerboat is the perfect choice for you.

Consumption and costs

On the flip side, with the increased speed comes higher fuel costs. While on a sailboat, you might only need to refuel at the end of your trip or 2-3 times a week at most, resulting in a manageable fuel bill. However, if you're sailing for extended periods each day on a motorboat, you'll find yourself refuelling frequently, at a higher cost, and spending a significant amount of time waiting to fill up the diesel tank.

Level of effort and work

Starting a motorboat is straightforward; turn it on and off you go, cruising wherever you fancy. There's no need to fuss over ropes, the jib, sails, lazy bags, lazy jacks, or the whereabouts of the crank. Unlike on a sailboat where there's always something to keep you occupied, a motorboat offers pure relaxation and peace of mind. If you're seeking a laid-back cruising experience, a powerboat is the way to go.

Sailing direction

As long as there are no big waves and the Bora is not blowing against you, you can sail your motorboat comfortably pretty much anywhere you want. This isn't the case with sailboats, where you might have to cruise or alter your destination if the wind is blowing directly against you. While sailboat enthusiasts often say, "the journey is the destination," powerboat users are more about reaching their destination promptly and without fuss.

What is the difference between a motor boat and a sailboat?

Despite their differences, powerboats and sailboats do share some commonalities, with maintenance being the prime one. Regardless of the type of boat you own, upkeep is crucial. This includes taking care of the sails or engine and ensuring regular servicing. Moreover, marina fees apply uniformly to both. The harbour masters charge based on the length of the boat, irrespective of whether it's a sailboat or a powerboat. The only exception might be a catamaran, which typically incurs a higher fee due to its dual-hulled design, making it wider and potentially occupying the space of two conventional berths.

Disadvantages of motor boats

While motor boats offer numerous advantages, it's important to consider their potential drawbacks as well. Let's take off the rose-tinted glasses and delve into some of the downsides associated with powerboats.

Fuel dependency and non-environmental operation

Unlike a sailboat that can harness the wind as a natural and free power source, a motorboat is completely reliant on diesel fuel. Running out of fuel in the middle of your journey can leave you stranded. Furthermore, this dependence on fossil fuels also means that operating a motorboat has a greater environmental impact compared to sailing.

YACHTING.COM TIP: Speaking of ecology, check out our guide — Green sailing: 11 tips for eco-friendly yachting .

Less stability in wind

Motorboats lack a significant keel, resulting in reduced stability when faced with waves and strong winds. Consequently, it is advisable to opt for motorboat rentals during the summer season, when occurrences of powerful winds and waves are comparatively infrequent.

Calm and the smell of the sea

The sound of the engine never leaves you during your voyage which can get on people's nerves. Likewise, the typical smell of burning diesel can start to bother you after a while.

Who is a motor boat best suited for?

A motor boat is well-suited for individuals seeking relaxation, tranquillity, and minimal effort. With the simple act of starting the engine, you can swiftly set sail without any additional concerns. Plus, a motor boat is highly recommended for those who desire to explore a wide range of places, including beaches and other scenic locations. It is particularly advantageous for covering long distances between islands and the mainland within the typical timeframe of a one or two-week vacation. Motor yachts are also a favourable choice for yachters who enjoy fishing, as they provide a comfortable and convenient means of transportation for navigating to different areas and indulging in fishing activities.

fisherman

Fishing is an great addition to a boating holiday.

For nature lovers seeking harmony and a closer connection to the natural environment, a sailboat is more preferable than a motorboat. Sailboats provide a serene atmosphere and allow for a deeper appreciation of nature. Additionally, if the aim is to foster teamwork and engage in shared experiences, a sailboat offers more opportunities as it involves handling ropes and sails.  But if you want to relax with a bunch of friends, there's nothing better than a powerboat.

Motor boat season

Unlike sailing boats that typically operate in Europe from April to November, motor boats have a more limited season. The majority of motor cruising occurs between June and September, with peak activity in June and July. Other times of the year, motor yachts are less commonly seen at sea. This is because before and after this season, conditions tend to be windier and the sea becomes cooler, which is more appealing to racers on sailing yachts rather than those seeking a tranquillity on a motorboat, particularly in destinations like Croatia.

Motor boat licence

The licence needed to operate a motor boat depends on two criteria — the engine power and the area where you will be boating (whether sea or inland waters). If you want to cruise on a motor boat with an engine power of  less than 4kW , then you don't need a licence. This applies to houseboats or small boats, for example. You can sail a boat with a 4kW to 20kW  engine on inland waters with a VMP licence, but for the sea you'll need an international skipper's licence just as for a sailing boat and in some countries (such as Croatia), a radio licence . With engine power  above 20kW , for inland sailing and on the sea, you will need a certificate of engine experience for inland sailing in addition to the VMP.

YACHTING.COM TIP: Still hesitating about getting your skipper's licence? Take a look at our 5 reasons to take a skipper's course . Then check out our sailing courses and you'll soon be sailing the seas!

How to choose a motor boat?

Motor boats have a slightly different interior layout than sailboats. The smaller ones often have only one or two cabins and it is automatically assumed that the other couple sleeps in the saloon, often in the bow. Check before you make your final booking that you will have plenty of privacy. Small motor boats are designed for a couple or small family rather than several people who don't know each other.

Route planning

When choosing a boat, take note of how much the boat consumes. You may find that the fuel will cost you the same amount of money as the charter itself in a week's sailing. Plan your itinerary in advance so you know what to expect.

YACHTING.COM TIP: Want to enjoy your cruise to the fullest and without a care in the world? Try hiring a professional skipper or hostess for your yacht. They'll take care of running the boat, cleaning and cooking, leaving you to relax and spend time with your loved ones. Just ask our sales team.

Highly renowned motor boat brands in the charter industry

Here we have picked out the most popular types of motor boats from our search portal.

Probably the most infamous brand of motorboats is Merry Fisher. The Merry Fisher 795 models are among the best sellers and the Merry Fisher 895 is a common sight cruising the coastline of Croatia. Another sought-after model is the Antares 9 OB , which is generously equipped for a comfortable boating holiday, but if you're after something bigger, the Antares 11 Fly is a great choice. The Greenline 33 or its larger sibling, the Greenline 39 , are also fantastic options.

Other types of motor boats

Every motor boat is unique, and there can be a wide range of vessels categorized under the name "motor boat." Let's explore some intriguing and lesser-known motor boats that have distinctive features and stand out from the norm.

Small motorboat

Charter services also offer the option to rent small motor boats, which are perfect for day trips to secluded beaches, nearby islands, or bays that are inaccessible by foot. These boats are typically compact and may not have cabins, making them suitable for short excursions. They are particularly recommended for families who have rented an apartment by the sea and wish to explore the surrounding areas by water. In many cases, these small motor boats are equipped with relatively low-powered engines, and in several countries, you may not even require a skipper's license to operate them. We recommend, for example, the Zodiac Madline 2 or the slightly larger Four Winns H210 .

small boat

You can also rent a smaller boat.

Few people can buy a superyacht. And although many more people can rent one, it is still quite expensive. A superyacht or megayacht is considered to be a boat longer than 80 feet but you'll have to hire a professional skipper as only a handful of skippers have a licence for a boat of this length. For example, we offer the superyacht Azimut Grande 27 or MY Custom Line 52 m . These can cost up to 100,000 euros to hire for a week, but the price often includes a crew to look after the boat (including the professional skipper).

The main difference from the motor boats we rent at sea is that houseboats sail on freshwater streams and are designed for exploring rivers, canals, lakes, ponds, and dams. Although houseboats generally have less powerful engines, this feature often allows them to be rented without a license in most destinations. It's important to note that these houseboats are far from mundane, offering a unique and enjoyable holiday experience on calm waters. Check out these breathtaking destinations you can explore on a houseboat.

Power catamaran

Recently, motor catamarans or power catamarans have become more and more popular. They combine the advantages of a catamaran (two hulls, stability, space, nets to lie on,...) while offering the speed, carefree and comfort of a motor boat. Never driven a catamaran? Check out our article — First time on a catamaran: what you need to know

How to operate a motor boat?

If you have sailing experience, driving a powerboat will seem like something very simple. You don't have to worry about ropes, sails, vignettes, masts or a flying jib. You simply start the boat and cruise wherever you want. Then it's the same as mooring with a sailboat.

One important aspect to be aware of when operating a motor boat is the  engine trim . Engine trim refers to the adjustment of the angle between the propeller and the bottom of the boat. Ideally, the propeller should be positioned vertically downward. As a motor boat gains speed, the bow of the boat may lift, causing the propeller to partially submerge. In such cases, it is the responsibility of the captain to intervene and adjust the engine trim to ensure that the propeller is aligned vertically and not at any angle other than 90 degrees to the water surface. This adjustment is crucial to prevent the boat from jumping or unnecessarily impacting the water with the bow. By maintaining the correct trim, the boat can navigate efficiently and provide a comfortable sailing experience for all on board.

Where to sail with a motor boat?

We've selected 3 regions where you can enjoy a fantastic time with a motorboat and take advantage of its superior speed.

Vineyards and islands off Hvar

Start your journey from Split and make your way to the enchanting island of Solta or the sun-soaked Brac. For a glimpse of Croatia's renowned beaches, don't miss out on visiting Zlatni Rat. Proceed to the captivating island of Hvar, where we suggest exploring either the lively town of Hvar itself, the more serene town of Stari Grad, or the authentically charming Vrboska. Indulge in an overnight stay at a tranquil cove on the island of Ščedro, where you can delight in snorkeling alongside majestic clams. Depending on your available time and preferences, continue your voyage to the island of Vis and discover the picturesque village of Komiza, where you can experience the novelty of standing on a buoy or by the pier. During the day, take a trip to the island of Bisevo, home to the famed Blue Spila (blue cave).

Ionian Sea (and turtles!)

Rent a boat on the Greek island of Corfu. Upon taking over the boat on Saturday, take a leisurely stroll to the charming capital, Kerkyra, where you'll be enchanted by its delightful streets and atmosphere. Next, set sail south towards the island of Paxos, renowned for its breathtaking bays. During the day, make sure to indulge in a refreshing swim in Lefkada, a destination in the western part that boasts stunning beaches reminiscent of the Caribbean. Consider spending the night in the lively bay of Vasiliki, known for its vibrant nightlife and one of Greece's most famous kebab joints. The following day, continue your journey to Kefalonia and then proceed onwards to Zakynthos, famously known as the "island of turtles." If possible, sail as far south as you can towards Zakynthos, maximizing your exploration of this captivating destination.

Italian temperament

Experience the enchanting Bay of Naples, beginning in Baiae and venturing to Ischia, where you can navigate its waters at your leisure. Along the way, explore the quaint islet of Procida. Consider Ponza as an alternative to the bustling island of Capri. If time permits, visit the renowned Positano. Carry on to the breathtaking town of Amalfi, with its cliffside houses. Above all, indulge in la dolce vita.

Whether it's a motorboat or a sailboat, I'll find you the perfect choice. Give me a call.

This boat is a fishing machine, and with its wide beam from the bow of the boat to the stern it can enjoyed, by sunbathers, fishermen, and family all day long.Boston Whaler Montauk - 190 MONTAUKClassic good looks meet modern-day utility in the Boston Whaler 190 Montauk, a well-designed boat that rises to any occasion. Its 96-inch beam allows generous fish-fighting space, and a standard 115-hp Four Stroke Mercury offers ample power to get the job done. Throughout, Whaler's unmatched attention to detail is apparent: Non-skid flooring and stainless steel grab rails ensure safety, and a built-in fuel tank, a bow locker, two rod holders and crystal-clear console instrumentation all deliver great sport boat and fishing boat functionality. Cutting-edge Raymarine electronics lend extra know-how. Find the fish, fight the fish and stay comfortable doing it. The 190 Whaler Montauk performs admirably every time. The Montauk carries its Super wide (( 8 Foot beam )) all the way to the bow, giving this 190 much more room than typical 19 footers. While the technology has changed a bit, all of today's Boston Whalers are built using the same unsinkable, foam-filled Unibond fiberglass hull introduced nearly half a century ago.Key FeaturesAft cockpit storage with fiberglass coverBow and stern lifting eyes19" interior freeboardInstrumentation and electrical switch panelReversible pilot seat with locking backrestTeleflex no-feedback steeringClassic style navigation lights Boston Whaler 190 Montauk 2007 boat specifications:1.)overall length 19 feet, beam 8 feet2.)draft 12 inches3.)dry weight 1900 pounds4.)inboard gas tank 60 gallons, estimated 290 mile range5.)Mercury EFI outboard four stroke 115 hp - four-cylinder6.)Galvanized trailer with radial tires and disc brakes190 Montauk (2007-) Engine optioRaymarine A-78 Fish Finder and Chart plotter Raymarine's a78 is a full-featured GPS/chartplotter and fishfinder with amazing CHIRP DownVision™ Sonar technology. What Size Motor Do I Need for a 12 Foot Boat?

When it comes to selecting the right motor for your 12-foot boat, there are several factors to consider. The size of the motor plays a crucial role in determining the performance and efficiency of your boat. In this article, we will explore the factors that influence the choice of motor size and provide you with some guidelines to help you make an informed decision.

Factors to Consider

Before diving into the specifics, it’s important to understand that the size of the motor needed for a 12-foot boat depends on various factors:

  • Weight Capacity: The maximum weight capacity of your boat should be taken into account. It includes not only passengers but also any gear or equipment you plan to carry onboard.
  • Water Conditions: Different water conditions require different levels of power. If you’ll be navigating calm lakes or rivers, a lower horsepower motor may suffice. However, if you plan on taking your boat into rougher waters or areas with strong currents, a more powerful motor may be necessary.

Determining Motor Size

To determine the appropriate motor size for your 12-foot boat, consider the following guidelines:

Gross Load Calculation

To calculate the gross load (weight capacity) of your boat, add up the weight of all passengers and any gear or equipment you plan to carry onboard. Keep in mind that this weight should include full fuel tanks as well.

Horsepower-to-Weight Ratio

As a general rule of thumb, the recommended horsepower for an outboard motor is 1 horsepower for every 100 pounds of gross load. This ratio ensures that your boat has enough power to propel itself efficiently and safely.

For example, if your boat’s gross load (including passengers and gear) is approximately 800 pounds, you would need a motor with a minimum of 8 horsepower to achieve optimal performance.

Additional Considerations

In addition to the guidelines mentioned above, here are a few more considerations to keep in mind:

  • Boat Manufacturer Recommendations: Check the manufacturer’s recommendations or specifications for your specific boat model. They may provide specific guidelines on motor size.
  • Fuel Efficiency: Higher horsepower motors generally consume more fuel. If fuel efficiency is a priority for you, consider opting for a smaller motor with better fuel economy.

Remember that these guidelines are meant to serve as starting points. It’s always best to consult with experts or professionals who can provide personalized advice based on your specific boating needs and circumstances.

In Conclusion

Selecting the right motor size for your 12-foot boat requires careful consideration of factors such as weight capacity, intended use, and water conditions. By following the guidelines outlined in this article and seeking professional advice when needed, you can ensure that your boat is equipped with an appropriately sized motor that provides optimal performance and safety.

Sun Dolphin American 12 Jon Boat Review

Ian Fortey

When you’re in the market for a two-person fishing boat, the Sun Dolphin American 12 should definitely be on your list of boats to check out. This budget-friendly jon boat is a step up from the Sun Dolphin kayak and has a lot of features for the fisherman who just wants a simple and effective boat to get them out on the water and make their fishing trip easier and more convenient.

Features and Specifications

motorboat 12

While the Sun Dolphin is by no means a luxury vessel, it does offer up a lot of what you need for a solo trip out on the water, or if you have a partner. It’s small but well built and very efficient for when you need a boat that’s solid and gets the job done. Specs for the Sun Dolphin American 12 include:

  • Length: 144” or 12’
  • Width: 52” or 4’4”
  • Height: 21”
  • Weight Capacity: 532 lbs
  • Dry Weight: 110 lbs
  • HP Rating: 6 HP

In terms of features this is obviously a small vessel so you won’t be getting live wells, LED lighting or bilge pumps. However, it does offer up an incredibly sturdy and rugged design. Check out some of the most notable features it brings to the table.

  • Two large, bench seats ensure ample room for two to fish without getting in each other’s way once you’re out on the water.
  • The UV-stabilized deck and hull are made of a high density polyethylene known as Fortiflex. If the name isn’t familiar, just know that it’s tough and rugged and can stand up to more than its fair share of abuse.
  • The jon boat features closed cell polystyrene foam flotation which means the boat has the buoyancy you need but it’s also very lightweight at the same time.
  • Both the bow and stern of the Sun Dolphin have built in motor mounts, and there’s also built in battery storage as well.
  • In addition to those built in features you’ll also find built-in oarlock sockets, storage trays and rod holders as well. There are a total of four rod holder locations available which is decent for a boat of this size.
  • Sundolphin also offers a limited lifetime warranty on the boat’s deck and hull while components get one year of coverage. This doesn’t cover accidents or vandalism so it’s essentially a warranty against manufacturer defects.
  • Recessed drink and tackle holders to keep your stuff stable and secure
  • The vessel meats all coast guard safety standards
  • The boat’s hull is fade resistant, abrasion resistant and puncture resistant in addition to that UV resistance.

Design and Construction

motorboat 12

The overall design of the Sun Dolphin American 12 is a simple jon boat . Flat bottom, two bench seats, flat back and a modified V-bow. It’s nothing you wouldn’t expect from a small jon boat in terms of appearance.

In terms of construction, that durable hull material is what makes this a standout. An aluminum hull is obviously going to be one of the sturdiest hulls you can get but it does come with a pumped up price tag. For those boaters who don’t want to invest in aluminum and are looking for a synthetic hull, the Sun Dolphin’s Fortifex hull is a decent product that is better able to handle some rough waters and scrapes than other polymer hulls I have seen.

The material is touted as being abrasion and puncture resistant and of course that doesn’t mean proof. It will still suffer some abrasions and scrapes but those smaller ones that will scuff up a cheaper quality boat won’t have as big an effect here. So if your concerns lie in balancing cost against quality, you’ll find a good middle ground with how this vessel is constructed.

The other strength of the materials used in this construction beyond durability and resistance is that weight. It’s really lightweight despite that solid structure and that means it’s easy to get in and out of the water, easy to clean and easy to transport. For some this may work best with a dolly, or you may want a second person to help, but depending on your physical abilities you may be able to move this around pretty easily all on your own as well.

Versatility

motorboat 12

At this size and layout, it’s 100% clear that the Sun Dolphin American 12 is a fishing boat. It’s designed just for this purpose so it’s not like you’ll be using this for day cruising with the family or anything of that sort.

There’s definitely enough room for two people to use the boat comfortably so it’s ideally suited for fishing with a friend, a father-son trip, a day out on the lake with a special someone or even just you and the dog having a relaxing afternoon on the water.

For a single person it’s more than roomy and it’s not too hard to manage alone by any means. The bench seats are very plain and I wouldn’t call them comfortable but they’re not terrible, either. They do the job efficiently enough and after a few hours you might find your backside a little sore.

Since it’s only rated for a 6 HP motor you can see it’s not a powerhouse but nor should it be. It handles still waters well but if things get choppy you’ll find it’s a little harder to manage.

I got to try out a Sun Dolphin American 12 last summer and let me just say I was legitimately surprised. A lot of times you might think a smaller vessel with a plastic hull is kind of cheap and forgettable but this boat really is sturdy and solid on the water.

If there’s one thing you want to be wary of, it’s how you distribute your weight on the boat. If there are two people on board and one is significantly heavier than the other, the situation can get a little unstable. But if you’re careful about how you organize yourselves and your gear it should be okay. Just be careful of movements if the weight is a little off.

You can manage this with a 4 hp trolling motor easily enough but I think the recommended 6 HP is the way to go. This is where weight distribution really becomes important. With a 6 hp motor mounted you may find yourself really lagging still. It’s not unheard of to pull just 8 mph or so with a 6 hp motor mounted. You should be able to do more and you can do more, you just need to be aware of how the boat is working.

If you’re alone and sitting at the stern, you are going to be weighing that thing down, it’s inevitable. Don’t waste your time trying to adjust your position and angle, it won’t matter. You’re just going to need to balance the load. This is where a dog or a child passenger really comes in handy but, failing that, make sure you have a cooler filled with stuff or some other gear that can at least partially counter your weight. If you get the boat balanced you can boost a lagging 8 mph to a much more reasonable 15 mph.

Worth noting if you’re a big guy like I am, and your friend is also a bigger guy, you will balance the boat but you’ll definitely be slowing down again. The total weight capacity on the boat is just over 500 lbs but the closer you creep to that the slower you will definitely find yourself going.

As far as maneuverability goes, I recommend getting your trolling motor mounted up on the bow. The boat handles really well with a bow mount and you can maneuver through tight places with ease, as you’d expect with a boat mounted trolling motor.

In general, maneuverability is about what you’d expect from a jon boat if you’re working with a standard stern mounted outboard.

Comfort and Convenience

motorboat 12

One thing I will mention about convenience here, or the lack thereof, is cleats. The boat doesn’t have cleats. It’s easy enough to add your own, of course, and you should add some so you can dock it more easily. But it’d be nice if it had cleats already so keep that in mind.

On the flip side, a very convenient aspect of this boat is how light and easy to manage it is. You can transport and store this very easily. If you have a garage at home there’s no doubt you can find some space to stash this when you’re not using it which is super convenient. A small trailer, some sturdy racks or shelves, there are lots of options that work well with this particular jon boat.

The boat is lightweight as you can see at just 110 lbs but that can definitely be on the heavier side for some people depending on their own physical limitations. You may want to use a dolly to move it about and something as simply as a kayak dolly works well here if need be.

The seats, as I mentioned above, are not built for extended comfort. I know some people like to straddle a bench seat but that is not recommended here. The benches are pretty wide and that seems like it’s a benefit, but if you try to straddle them you’re going to feel some discomfort pretty quickly, especially if you have shorter legs.

Ideally, I’d recommend installing a seat instead of just relying on the bench. If you plan on getting a lot of use out of this boat then it would be worth the investment.

Safety and Reliability

motorboat 12

The hull really is durable and more so than you might think. Not that you’d want to be taking a boat like this into rapids or banging against rocks. For everyday wear and tear it’s strong and reliable and will stand up to most of what you’d expect and a little more as well.

The closed cell polystyrene foam flotation really strikes a good balance between overall boat weight and buoyancy. It will hang a little low as you approach that 500 lb weight limit but it still performs well enough when the weight is properly distributed and you can’t ask for more than that.

In terms of safety, I have to mention again that the boat can get a little wobbly when the weight is not well distributed so be aware of that. As always, you should make sure you have a life jacket on at all times and if you’re out with little ones on this boat you absolutely want to make sure they are wearing a life jacket too. I know it’s most likely being used on smaller lakes and in shallow waters but safety should always be the priority.

If you plan on taking the boat out in the early morning or the evening, do put some consideration into getting a small portable light.

Pros vs Cons

motorboat 12

There’s a lot to consider when looking at this Sun Dolphin jon boat so let’s break it down in a simple pros vs cons comparison.

  • Great price for the size and compared to similarly sized boats
  • Durable hull stands up to reasonable wear and tear really well
  • Decent space for one or two people
  • From and back motor mount is conveninent
  • Lightweight makes for easy cleaning, transport and storage
  • Good maneuverability
  • Drink holders and storage isn’t fancy but is convenient and well placed given the boat’s design
  • Not the most comfortable experience you’ll have on the water if you use these seats for a few hours
  • Sturdiness is a little suspect if the weight distribution is off
  • Harder to steer than it should be given the position of the bench seats relative to wear you’ll mount your motor
  • Needs some cleats
  • The speed is going to suffer the closer you get to that weight limit which is pretty low overall

Who Do We Recommend it To?

If you’re a casual fisherman who doesn’t want a ton of bells and whistles with a boat, definitely look into the lightweight Sun Dolphin American 12. It’s ideal for those who want to go out alone or maybe with a friend or a child every so often. Fishing or duck hunting expeditions will be well served.

If your interest is in something that’s really easy to use, stress free and you can store it wherever and whenever, this is definitely a recommended choice. If it’s well maintained I’m pretty sure this boat could easily last you many seasons with only minor visible wear and tear that shouldn’t impede performance at all.

In a nutshell, I’d recommend this boat to those who value the following:

  • Ease of use
  • Stress free fishing/boating

Overall Value

The Sun Dolphin American 12 is a budget fishing boat that offers some good value for the money. You can find this boat for about $750 brand new but you do need to buy your own motor separately. That said, a quality trolling motor will not set you back too badly.

Obviously I think an aluminum hull boat, something like a Tracker Grizzly , is going to offer more durability overall but if we’re looking at just value for money here, I can’t trash talk this Sun Dolphin. It’s a lot sturdier than you’d think a boat would be at this price point, it performs well when the weight is balanced, it’s super easy to use and transport and it checks a lot of boxes you’ll need for a simple, low cost jon boat.

It would score higher points for me if it had a better maximum weight capacity than it does, and if the seats were made more comfortable. But those are small quibbles as they can be managed well enough. This is a small boat, after all, so there’s only so much you can expect for weight capacity anyway.

It may not be the fanciest boat on the water but it’s durable enough to last you over several seasons and compared to other small jon boats, including some of the higher priced aluminum models, this one holds its own. If you want a basic jon boat that does what it promises but is also easier on your wallet, I’d give this one a second look. It’s definitely recommended.

Boat Profile

A versatile lapstrake dinghy

From Issue   July 2021

F rance’s rugged Atlantic coastline is a popular and challenging cruising ground, but it was not so long ago that countless fleets of small workboats called its remote harbors and rocky estuaries home. These traditional voile-et-aviron ( sail-and-oar) boats inspired the French naval architect François Vivier to design boats like the Morbic 12, the Ilur, and a host of others. Like the Ilur, the Morbic 12 has become very popular in France, and in the last few years has attracted the attention of small-boat builders and sailors in the United Kingdom. The Morbic 12 is one of a series of Morbics that includes 8′ and 10′ lengths as well as an 11′ strip-planked version . The Morbic 12 has become a favorite with builders wanting something similar to the 14-1/2′ Ilur but a little smaller and easier to store and transport.

Vivier designed the Morbic 12 with the International 12 in mind. A hugely popular racing dinghy and tender for larger boats dating back to before the First World War, the International 12 set the standard for smaller sailing dinghies for many years around the U.K. and Europe. The Morbic 12 was inspired by both the older competitive 12′ racing dinghy class as well as the traditional inshore fishing boats once ubiquitous around Brittany. It has more beam and freeboard, comfortably carries a crew up to three, and is capable of coastal cruising under sail, oar, or even a small outboard. The construction manual is suited for those with some prior experience in modern glued-lapstrake construction; a novice builder might need expanded guidance for each step. I found Eric Dow’s 1993 book, How to Build the Shellback Dinghy, which I had used when I built a Shellback, a useful reference during the construction of the Morbic’s hull.

motorboat 12

There are buoyancy chambers under the foredeck and each of the side benches. The oars stow out of the way on the sides of the chambers. To the port side of the transom’s outboard cutaway there is a smaller notch for sculling.

I ordered the boat as a kit from Chase Small Craft, Vivier’s U.S. partner. It includes pretty much everything you would need to complete the boat: plans, CNC-cut plywood parts, shaped solid wood pieces, hardware, ’glass cloth, and resin. Additional kits provide sails, paint, Shaw & Tenney oars, and optional carbon-fiber spars.

T he glued-plywood lapstrake hull is built on a chipboard strongback and building frame that’s included in the kit. Five temporary chipboard molds plus three permanent 6mm okoume plywood frame sections constitute the strongback’s form for supporting the planks. The okoume sections form the transom, center bulkhead, and forward bow compartment. The false stem is constructed from both 10mm sapele marine plywood and solid mahogany stock provided with the kit. Two 6mm longitudinal bulkheads form the rear watertight compartments and allow easy attachment for the two-layered 10mm transom. Puzzle joints make gluing the two-piece sole, garboards, and five strakes a quick and easy operation. The hull can be planked rapidly with little fuss, especially if a second pair of hands is available. Due to the designer’s approach to simplifying construction, many of the plywood pieces that are part of the building form remain incorporated in the hull. This not only means that much of the interior is already built prior to flipping the hull, but also a lot of the labor associated with plank-on-frame construction is minimized. The Morbic 12 is not a difficult boat to build. An intermediate or advanced beginner can expect to spend around 350 to 400 hours to finish the boat.

motorboat 12

The large oval opening in the aft bulkhead provides easy access to a storage space under the seat that’s fixed to the transom. The smaller vertical opening is for the blade of an oar when stowed.

With its three built-in flotation chambers, the Morbic 12 is easily righted by a single sailor if capsized, and compliant with the European Recreational Craft Directive. The boat is rated as a Directive’s Category-C vessel, suitable for coastal waters where one can expect up to Force 6 winds and waves up to 2 meters. Not bad for a small boat, though I tend not to press my luck in such conditions—I sail singlehanded most of the time.

Another unique design characteristic of the Morbic 12 is that the centerboard is constructed from two glued panels of 10mm sapele and, if desired, is removable for transport. While sailing it is held under tension by a bungee cord that keeps it either fully down or up as needed. A spruce bird’s-mouth mast is standard and included as part of the spar timber kit. The mast is mounted by inserting it through a cutout in the forward deck and locked into place at a maststep epoxied to the boat’s sole. The kick-up rudder is also constructed from two 10mm sapele sections and is weighted with 1.2 kilograms of lead placed in a CNC-cut oval section in each blade blank.

motorboat 12

The lugsail-with-boom rig carries an 82 sq ft sail. There are three other rigs: the lugsail without a boom, with a jib, and with a curved and battened leech.

The Morbic 12 can be built with three different lugsail rigs: a traditional boomless misainier rig, popular with traditionalists; a balance lug with boom and either a battened or battenless lug sail; or a sloop version that can also be converted to a lug rig by [leaving the jib off and] moving the mast forward to the foredeck’s cutout for a lug rig mast.

The mast, yard, and boom store easily within the cockpit for trailering or rowing and are quick to set up; the Morbic’s simple lug rig can be set up in as little as 15 minutes.

The unstayed sloop version will take a little bit longer to rig. A 36″ bowsprit will have to be installed on a foredeck into a samson post’s mortise. Unlike the lug rig, the sloop version includes the option of two mast partners, which allow the rig to be quickly converted to a balance lug rig by simply dropping the jib and moving the mast forward.

T he Morbic 12 feels more like a 13- or 14-footer; it stiffens up quickly and easily handles any point of sail. It steers with very little effort and has just enough weather helm to round up for safety’s sake in any unexpected gusts. With the boom’s 3:1 downhaul well-tensioned and the luff taut, the Morbic sails tight to the wind and if you drop off a degree or two and build up some speed, it easily tacks through 90 degrees. The boat responds well to choppy conditions and displays no tendency to pound or take much water over the bow. I attribute this to its generous freeboard, firm bilge, and light weight.

The Morbic 12 effortlessly rides over waves and has no problem making up to a GPS-measured 5 knots in 10 to 12 knots of wind in flat water. In gustier conditions it remains stable and easy to control, especially with the movable ballast of an additional crew member out on the rail. Sailing singlehanded, I rarely have to reef as long as I sail the boat flat and keep the downhaul very tight. Once the wind pipes up to around 12 knots, it is time to put in a reef. After all, it is a sailing dinghy. Reefing is easy: you just pull up the centerboard, let the mainsheet go free, and the boat will simply stop. Drop the rig into the boat and tie in the reef, re-hoist, and sail off. To keep the yard from ending up in the water I’ve added lazyjacks to keep it and the sail over the boom when lowering the rig. Since I prefer to reef with the sail not piled in the cockpit, I installed a simple jiffy reefing system that is quicker and less liable to clutter up the limited working space within the boat.

motorboat 12

The author’s boat is currently outfitted with a single rowing station. The plans detail a second rowing station forward.

The Morbic 12 plans come with instructions for building oars specific to each of the rowing stations located at the middle and forward thwarts. The boat can also be very easily sculled using the semicircular notch in the port side of the transom. Overall, I find the Morbic’s light hull is easily propelled with standard 8′6″ oars, even with the weight of the sailing rig and other gear aboard. The plans call for 8′9″ oars for the center rowing thwart and include a cleverly designed oar storage area alongside each bench seat with the blades locked into a dedicated cutout on either side of the storage area below the aft deck. The Morbic 12 is a pleasure to row and moves through calm water with very little effort. In a lot of wind and unsettled water, however, the Morbic’s beam and high freeboard make it hard to row against a strong head- or cross-wind, and a couple of times I have had to drop the mast into the boat to reduce windage in order to make forward progress.

motorboat 12

The Morbic 12’s stern is full enough aft to support the weight of an outboard. The transom is notched to accommodate a short-shaft motor.

A broad recess in the center of the transom is for a short-shaft outboard up to 4 hp. I have a Suzuki 2.5-hp outboard to power the Morbic 12 when I use it for fishing local lakes and the near-shore protected waters along Grand Traverse Bay, Michigan. It is so stable that standing up and moving about is no problem at all. I will also sometimes carry a trolling motor with a small 35-amp battery when fishing on lakes where gasoline engines are prohibited. When rowing becomes impractical, that electric motor also serves as auxiliary power in case I need to get back through a crowded anchorage or can’t safely sail back to a busy public launch ramp due to powerboats or a strong adverse wind on the nose or beam.

motorboat 12

From Guam to Annapolis and points in-between, Mark Wisdom grew up never far from water and now lives near Traverse City, Michigan. He built his Morbic 12, PETIT BIJOU, to sail Michigan’s large inland lakes, Grand Traverse Bay, and Lake Huron’s Les Cheneaux Islands. When not sailing the Morbic 12, he can be found cruising in his ‘67 Wayfarer on Lake Michigan or anywhere else a tank of gas and a boat ramp will take him.

The boat looks very fine and I appreciate the excellent photos of the interior details.

It seems from these photos that the boat has only one lower rudder pintle. I also see the photo of the boat with the outboard attached neatly in the centre of the transom. Is there some useful trick here to allow an outboard to fit on the transom without fouling a fixed upper pintle? This is a problem I now face having purchased an electric outboard and now trying to use it on our 10′ Limpet dinghy.

Yes, the upper pintle is easily removed to facilitate mounting a 2.5 hp Suzuki on the transom. This is intentional. Both rudder attachment points, like all the other drilled and through-bolted components, were over-drilled, filled with epoxy, allowed to fully cure, and then redrilled to the hardware’s diameter to create a barrier to moisture. In the case of the outboard, I simply remove the pintle’s two bolts, nuts, and lock washers, stow them in a ditty bag and mount the engine. Easy, simple, and effective for the Suzuki. Other industry outboard models up to the Morbic’s max capacity of 4hp may just mount easily without removing any rudder attachment hardware.

Hi Mark, both lovely and practical – as are all the Vivier designs.

I have a query on the fixing of the thwart cushions – can you explain how you went about it please? I’m just making cardboard templates for thwart cushions in my 12′ Essex Smacks boat and would appreciate any advice from making yours.

Paul Pearson, UK

Beautiful, Mark! I will have to keep my eyes peeled for this on the bay next summer!

Requirements for Foreign Recreational Boaters in Canadian Waters

Boating safety should be a concern for everyone on the water. Regardless of whether or not your state requires boater education, regardless of whether you're a boat owner or are just "along for the ride", education in boat operation, navigation, and life-saving skills is important in both preventing accidents, and minimizing them if they occur.

What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat?

I have a 12 ft Simple Aluminum slight V-Hull boat, and want to use this boat to run up river, this river can get quite a current when water is running. So what size engine would have enough power to get up a fast current? I was looking for a 9.9 hp, but I wonder if a 6 would be able to do the job? the boat is very light, maybe 200 lbs. And the beam is about 3-4 ft wide. closer to 4 ft wide.

Re: What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat? This is the Susquehanna river, at the Head of the Chesapeake bay. It is about a mile wide, But there is a dam upriver, and when they release water, it may be a 5 MPH current, maybe more. I had a 2 50 lb thrust trolling motor's on there, and had both going and was just staying still in the current.

Re: What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat? Here's a good thread... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=297930

Re: What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat? 9.9, definitely. For trolling motors you can guess at about 1hp for every 25- 35 "pounds of thrust." It's actually not that simple, and I think there is a thread somewhere about the math, but that is good enough for easy figuring. So a 6hp will just barely creep you over the speed of the current. It may not plane your boat well, either, but I have no reason to say that other than a guess. You will likely plane out about 10 to 15-ish mph with the 9.9, nice for getting somewhere and enough to insure a margin of safety. That is my opinion. Mileage may vary...

Re: What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat? Almost all v-hull 12' boats are rated for 10 hp, so I'd get the 9.9. It'll plane you out, and that's the key to going upriver. With the six, not so much. I use my 6hp on the Mississippi, though, up here in Minnesota. I avoid the river when there's a lot of current, since it's a drag running against it.

Re: What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat? I saw an ad for a 7.5 HP honda engine. selling for $250 bucks. I think that would get the job done, But you never hear anything about honda engines, Idk if they are good or not.

Re: What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat? least 9.9 i got a 10hp 2 stroke and with me and buddy about 135 and 110-115between the both fo us and some gear plug gas we plane out pretty good if he sat in the front. my boat was a flat though with a vi hull in front. would suggust leats 9.9 forget the honda its 4 stroke

Re: What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat? yea, 4-strokes are way too complicated for that size of engine. And too much weight.

Re: What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat? Go with the max you can. Best for fighting currents and some reserve power. The difference in fuel is hardly noticeable.

Re: What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat? Had a 12' tinny with an old ('64) 9.9 on it and it did really well in my river, currents would get pretty heavy at times and I never had a problem. With just me in th boat and the eight spread out just right it would really move out. A 6 will do but a 9.9 would be better.

Re: What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat? I used to run a 12ft with a 6 hp, and always wished I had something like a 9.9 on it. If you find a killer deal on a 6 hp though you should be okay.

Re: What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat? 9.9 is the way to go.

Re: What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat? I have a 12' Duranautic V hull, it runs along ok with a 1978 6 hp Johnson on it but struggles in anything but the very least amount of current with two passengers. I'm close to 300lbs, and add a passenger and some tackle, and were pushing 600lbs, it moves the boat but not very fast. My 9.9 does a lot better but still isn't super fast. I actually do better with my older 9.5 hp Evinrude since its so much lighter and I don't need to carry the 75lb battery. I have a Honda 10hp, it's an older Honda 100 4 stroke, it runs great but outweighs my Johnson 25 hp. I wouldn't even consider hanging it on my 12' boat. I believe their 7.5 hp motor is based on the same motor? I'd go with no less than the 9.9 hp. The best thing I did to mine was to put the 15hp carb on my 9.9, that woke the motor up enough so it at least has enough power to get the boat well on plane and moving along at a nice pace. My Duranautic is rated for 10hp max and 540lbs.

Re: What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat? Just to add a small note: The 6 hp I use is fine for me, since I'm almost always on small lakes. I use it on the river, but only when I'm by myself. If you're going to mostly do river fishing, I'd definitely go with the 9.9 or 10 hp. You'll be glad you did.

Re: What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat? This would be for duck hunting in the winter on islands up in the rocky shallow part of the river. Somewhere I would never take my glass boat.

Re: What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat? I have a 6HP in my 14'er. with all my gear and a trolling motor she isnt as fast as Id like..... 10 HP would be much better. with just me and no trolling motor or gear she zipps around plenty fine.

Re: What size motor for 12 ft V-hull Aluminum boat? Hello What is the motor rating for the boat? I have an old 12ft sears V hull--It is only rated for a 7 1/2 HP I have a Suzuki 6 HP on it.It is all the motor I want on it. Once in a while I use it up in maine on a river with a strong tidal flow.It seems to handle the currant OK.

FastCat12™ Catamaran Reviews

I did a ton of research before I pulled the trigger on this boat and it paid off. My first trip was in San Diego in mission bay and the boat was perfect. My self and father-in-law fished the bay for a week with no issues and were blown away how stable the boat was and received a ton of compliments. The 5hp mercury outboard compliments the boat.

I love my Seaeagle 12 Fast Cat. Use it almost everyday in Florida. Customer service is great. Had a valve leak and they sent me a box and had it back in a couple of weeks with shipping time. Just the right size if I need to deflate it and store it. Great ride and just a solid built boat.

Boat is really great. I got all the extras with electric pump, seats, bimini etc. Sets up pretty quick and easy. I went with an electric 83lbs thrust motor and batteries ( 24 volt). I can run for hours! Great to take on vacation with us. We have an RV and like to bring the golf cart and the boat once deflated takes up no room at all.

The unit fits all of our needs. It is very stable with two passengers. Plenty of room to carry a cooler. The sun shade does act like a sail in the wind but you just make the best of it. The electric motor allows one to do some fishing and not have to stay in one spot for any time. Overall, good quality, came in a timely manner and was fairly easy to assemble. It definitely takes two people to move around when inflated.

  1. First time on a motor boat: what you should know

Draft and bridges. A motorboat's draft is significantly shallower, thanks to the absence of a keel. Furthermore, the lack of a mast means there's no need to worry about the boat's height when it comes to passing under bridges. So from a depth and overhead clearance perspective, you're in safe waters with a motorboat.

Horsepower-to-Weight Ratio. As a general rule of thumb, the recommended horsepower for an outboard motor is 1 horsepower for every 100 pounds of gross load.
