About Royal Yachting Association

Sailing and windsurfing are two great sports for getting you active and energetic, outside in the fresh air. They're quick and easy to learn- with the right tuition you'll have great fun, you'll be speeding along in no time!

Once you've learnt the basics, you can actively explore your local stretch of water then join a sailing club full of like-minded people to go off cruising or racing. No matter what your age or experience, there is a course for you. It won't cost you a fortune, and there's an RYA Training Centre near you where you can get started.

Royal connections through the ages

Celebrating the rya’s royal legacy.

From holidays to yacht racing, The Royal Family has a long history of seafaring.

As we celebrate the Coronation of our new Monarch, His Majesty King Charles III, we look back at the RYA’s connections with The Royal Family and their passion for spending time on the water.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

Over the centuries the Monarchy has sailed aboard 83 royal yachts, including the most recent, HMY Britannia, which often hosted the RYA Council meetings during Cowes Week. 

In addition to her diplomatic duties on Royal Tours, HMY Britannia was also a vessel for family holidays. During the summer months, The Royal Family would often take off on what became known as the aptly named Western Isles tour, cruising around Scotland. 

In 1948, Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh were listed as new members of the RYA (known then as the Yacht Racing Association). 

It became the Royal Yachting Association in 1952 when Sir Ralph Gore, then President, spoke of “Her Majesty’s recent command that the name of the Association will in future be the Royal Yachting Association."

The Duke of Edinburgh sailed frequently with Prince Charles in the Dragon Class keelboat Bluebottle, a wedding present to Her Majesty The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh from the Island Sailing Club in Cowes, Isle of Wight. Bluebottle is the only British Dragon to have won an Olympic medal, picking up a bronze at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was our Patron for many years and the Duke was elected as President of the RYA for the first time in 1956. It was under his watch, the first ever RYA Training Committee was formed. 

His Majesty King Charles

A keen watersports fan, His Majesty King Charles III has been known to enjoy scuba diving and sailing – and was one of the first Royal members in the world to discover windsurfing in the 1970s.

Among many boating-related engagements over the years as The Prince of Wales, he visited the Olympic and Paralympic sailing venue at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) in the build up to the 2012 Games, christening the boat of 49er due Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes.  

The Princess Royal

Following in her father's footsteps, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal has been President of the RYA since 1987 and is also Patron of the RYA Foundation .

A keen sailor, Princess Anne and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, have kept a Rustler 44, Ballochbuie, at Ardfern in Scotland and have enjoyed cruising, sometimes as far as the Hebrides.

Amongst her duties as President, The Princess Royal has chaired almost every RYA AGM. She regularly visits sailing clubs across the UK to mark milestones, shows her support for the British Sailing Team and presents the annual RYA Volunteer Awards .

In an interview for RYA Magazine , she speaks fondly of her long history and love for sailing: “For me it’s important to have time away and sailing really is time away. It gives you a complete change from anything you’re doing and from my perspective, having a boat on the west coast of Scotland gives me two things – time away and in an attractive area.”

The Prince of Wales and Princess of Wales

The Prince and Princess of Wales also share a love for being outdoors and spending time on the water. The Princess of Wales has incorporated her love for sailing into her royal duties as Patron of sailing charity, the  1851 Trust .

When she was appointed, she said: “I feel very fortunate to have enjoyed sailing from a young age and I know it is a great way of providing young people with the opportunity to develop skills and confidence”.

As a family, the Prince and Princess of Wales enjoy spending time on the coast, introducing their own three children to sailing.

Founded in 1935, the RNSA is a Service Sports Association and charity that delivers the sport of sailing and associated activities for the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and their associated reserve forces.

The RNSA operates across the UK and aims to get Service men and women of all sailing abilities actively engaged in our sport. We passionately believe sailing is an ideal vehicle for improving personal skills and military efficiency. We organise our sailing into the core disciplines of yachting (both racing and cruising), dinghy sailing and windsurfing and have a fantastic active sailing and social programme.

In January 2020 RNSA was recognised as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (Charity No 1183562).

RNSA Membership Types

The following personnel may apply for full membership of the rnsa:.

• Serving in the RN, RM, RFA, Maritime Reserves (Active List), URNU, DETUS.
• Serving in the Commonwealth or Allied Naval forces.
• Serving in Sea Cadets or CCF as a volunteer, leader, instructor.
• Veteran/no longer serving in RN, RM, RFA, Maritime reserve (Active List), QARNNS, WRNS, RNXS, Commonwealth or Allied Naval Forces.

Special Offer Serving Personnel in Category A below pay no subscriptions for the first year of membership. Thereafter the normal subscription of £46 is payable.

Annual cost of Full Membership £46 - no joining fee for those in Category A and B above. £46 joining fee for those in Categories C and D.

Personnel who do not qualify for Full Membership may apply for Associate Membership if they satisfy one of the criteria below:

• Serving in the British Army or RAF (and member of their Sailing Association).
• Veteran / no longer serving in the British Army or RAF (and member of their Sailing Association) .
• Civilian who is currently working in a Royal Navy appointment and has had greater than 6 months in post.
• A Civil Servant (and member of the CSSA) who is currently working with the RN or with the MOD in a Navy related role and has had greater than 6 months in post. Or has left that role after more than 12 months in post. .
• A direct descendant (one generation only) of a current or former RNSA full member.
• Nominated by the RNSA Exec Board for individuals who offer specific skills to support the Charity.

Associate members will enjoy the same benefits as the other categories of membership, although will be entitled to fly the appropriate RNSA burgee for their membership category.

Annual cost of Associate Membership £46 - joining fee £46 for those in Categories B, C and D.

Family Members:

Members may elect to include their immediate family members in their membership as Associate Members. Eligibility for family membership applies to spouses / civil partners and offspring * up to eighteen years of age or up to twenty-five years of age if in full time education.

Annual cost of Family Membership £69 - no joining fee for serving Naval Personnel, £46 joining fee for others.

The Holt Cup at the weekend provided the perfect opportunity for Paul Knox-Johnston of Haven Knox-Johnston Insurance to present Roger Irvine a GoPro camera in recognition of his great work for RNSA.

An amazing weekend saw 8 teams fight to win the Holt Cup over 30 races in some stunning West Country weather. Many congratulations to Bristol URNU who narrowly overcame the Plymouth team in the final.

Description.

Official app of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) – RYA SafeTrx allows you to register your vessel and plan and track your trip on your smartphone. This app is freely available to anyone, you do not need to be an RYA member. It is free to download and there is no charge to use it. Once registered, choose from the menu options to plan and file your trip (Sail Plan mode) or just activate the tracking function of the app (Track only mode).If you are filing a Sail Plan, choose your vessel, set the ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival), enter the number of persons on board, the activity type and choose your emergency contact. Then, using the built-in maps, select a starting point, an optional waypoint and the end destination. Once this is completed simply press the ‘set sail’ button when you are ready to start your trip. You and your emergency contacts will be automatically alerted following an escalation process after the journey exceeds the ETA in Sail Plan mode. Pressing ‘set sail’ in Sail plan mode or just pressing the start button in Track only mode will register trip details with the RYA server and will activate position reporting in the app. At regular intervals the app will send a position report to the server. At any stage during the trip you can end your trip, revise the ETA, number of people on board or the destination. Use the RYA SafeTrx app to: - Quickly start recording using the ‘Track only’ mode to begin tracking at a touch of a button. Change the recording interval to save on battery consumption when your tracking is in progress. - Find nearby port and marina information, Notices to Mariners, VHF channels, lifeboat stations and useful safety information using the “Explorer” tool. - Access location-based and real-time weather when planning your trip or when your trip is in progress. - Give friends and family peace of mind ashore by sharing your real-time location on a live map, and allow them to track you while you’re on the water. - Check valuable maritime safety information when both online and offline. - Create your own personalised checklist to be included as part of your Sail Plan before departing. - Activate an Emergency call from within the RYA SafeTrx app. (iPhone only) - Manage your profile, vessel, checklist and emergency contact information. Continued use of GPS running in the background can considerably decrease battery life while in use. Please note: This application’s functionality and the information it contains are published on the understanding that end users are to apply their own knowledge and skills in the use of this application. Maritime safety is an extremely serious matter. In an emergency this application’s function and information are not meant to be relied on exclusively. Other reliable information and help from third parties should be looked for and made use of in addition. This application can provide valuable coordinates of the user’s position, as determined by the mobile device used and the GPS system. Mobile devices and their supporting telecommunication networks are, however, not reliable and there is a real chance of loss of connection between the mobile device and the mobile network and / or the GPS system. Nor is there any guarantee that the connection between your mobile device and mobile networks will be uninterrupted. Cannot download app on to new iPad

CG66 was a database used by the UK coastguard, so that individual yacht details could be entered by the owner. This had the advantage of linking the details to either the MMSI or the associated callsign of the vessel. If there were any reason to contact HMCG, by giving the MMSI the CG could get all the detail needed from the database, especially in an emergency. This keeps r/t to a minimum, no mistakes are made on the data and the crew can focus on the emergency instead of being distracted by the VHF comms. CG66 was ended in March 2020 and the database function was replaced by the RYA SafeTrx system. The app itself is an excellent concept and continually being developed. The app will not function on later iPads, but works well on smartphones. Although a useful planning tool, this is the only major shortfall. I would strongly recommend logging your vessel's details with the SafeTrx database.

Almost excellent

I use this app all the time, it gives me peace of mind that if something happens my last known position will be recorded. I particularly like being able to look back at trips and see details of the journey. I did have it on my iPhone 4S but even though it works, setting the waypoints is impossible as the screen keeps scrolling to my location as soon as I take my finger off. I now use it on my iPhone 7 and the only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is that it’s constantly checking my location, not just during the trip while the program is active, but after the trip is ended it carries on, even after I’ve forced the app to close, restarted the phone etc. The only way I can stop it is by going into settings, privacy, and denying it access to the gps. I then never remember to turn it on and the program tells me as I’m setting up my next trip. On the whole, good, and very useful but my paranoia is asking why it keeps checking my location?

Use it every passage

This is one of the best safety enhancing contributions of recent times. I use it on every coastal passage. Even if making a crossing e.g. Irish Sea or Channel and losing cell range it still means there is someone holding your course history out to about 12 miles (cell range) and an expectation of when you should be popping into cell range on the other side. Since my emergency contact is also a parent it also gives them constant reassurance. Technically the App has worked without problem for me, you just need to leave it active on your phone the whole trip don’t close the app. I also like the history you get as I now have a nice course library of my recent passages. Top marks to the RYA on this one.
