Historical Summary:

Tusitala was built in 1908 in the Anderson Boat Yard in Seattle for John J Sessnon who owned the boat for just 4 years before he died. The boat was named Elizabeth at that time. After that the boat was owned by the 13th Mayor of Vancouver BC. At some point along the line the boat was renamed Barnaby for a very short time, and then given the name it still holds today... Tusitala which means the teller of tales. The boat changed hands a handful of times and in 1954 an upper house was added and a slight modification made to the forward hull planks to add height to the boards to match those behind them. We purchased the boat in December of 2017 where she was moored in the Liberty Bay Marina and moved to Port of Poulsbo Marina.

Treasure Island was itself inspired by the incredible story of James Macrae when he was attacked by Captains Taylor and England, two of the most fearsome pirates ever. In one of the many bedridden episodes of his sickly life, Stevenson read an account of this epic and true pirate encounter.

It described the unbelievable action and possibly the moment when Stevenson was inspired to create the character of Long John Silver. For a decent rendering of the story, try:

Macrae through this incident was also in some measure responsible for the success of Robert Burns as the chain of events set in motion Lord and Lady Glencairn’s marriage during which they became patrons of the Scottish Bard.

Extra Details

There is a 500 gallon copper fuel tank in the bow with two tanks in the aft lazarette used as day tanks. The fuel can be transferred by 4 ea. Winco pumps. The engines were installed in the mid 50's with a rebuild in 1992. The engines were started for me and they started with no hesitation and ran exceptionally smooth and quiet. Propellers are 28" X 28" 3 blade bronze R.H. starboard shaft and L.H. port shaft. Bronze spade rudders port and starboard with a wooden rudder amidship. Keel cooler for freshwater cooling system. Kubota 10 KW Diesel generator. OutBack VFX3232M Mobile Inverter/Charger, Vented, 3200 Watts, 32 Volt

There are two masts. Wooden fore-mast is stepped to the main deck in the pilothouse. Aft mast is aluminum, contains the engine exhaust stack and is stepped to the flybridge deck. The aft mast has a yardarm with a new 12 volt winch, which can be used to load supplies.

Construction

Hull is wooden carvel. Keel is 8" X 8 "X 36" fir, Horn timber is 6 1/2" X 5" various oak. Framing is 4 1/2" X 4 1/2" sawn, doubled on 16" centers and of Oak. Longitudinal timbers are 11" X 3" fir. Engine supports are 3 1/4 " X 6" X 82" fir doubled. Planking below waterline 2" fir. Planking above waterline is 2" teak. Fasteners below waterline is 5/16" X 6 1/2" copper rivet. Two Vacu-flush head.

Accommodation

The hull is divided into four compartments by way of three transverse non-watertight bulkheads. Pilothouse is accessed via two sliding side doors (with screens) and an aft door. #1 helm is forward to port. To starboard is the stairway for forward access to the below deck quarters. Aft of the helm is the main salon with generous seating and a very spacious table with seating for eight. Below deck is the forepeak chain locker accessed by deck hatch. Forward cabin stairway landing with fuel tank beneath. Forward stateroom has starboard enclosed hanging locker and centerline passageway. Master stateroom has full walkaround bed with a possible double berth across the room. Moving toward the stern is the centerline passageway to the engine room It has port and starboard engines, work room, boiler, and laundry facility with a stairway to the aft break deck. The boiler is more than adequate to heat the boat and keep it very dry. It heats water for the radiator system throughout the the boat. The boat has zone thermostats for the below deck and the upper pilothouse. This vessel is very warm and dry, with no odor, and is kept very clean and shows owner pride.

Amidships: Walk-in hanging locker with deep drawer storage across from master head; Vaccuflush, bathtub, hand-held shower. Aft stateroom: full berth plus convertible twin berth/office workspace, two dressers and below bunk storage. Engine room: 6’ workbench with grinder, drill press, vice, storage, auxiliary generator, washer, inverter/charger and batteries, and aft head with Vaccuflush and hand sink. Diesel day tanks, holding tank, and additional storage in the lazzarette.

Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2023

Tusitala hails from the Northern Beaches in NSW and is virtually an unknown quantity. She is essentially a cruising yacht, built in England in 1999. Her construction is wood/epoxy, utilising yellow cedar and mahogany. By cruising standards, she is light and fast, employing a simple cutter rig, easily managed by a small crew. Her name reflects the romantic notion of Pacific cruising - already well proven during her passage out from England. She will return to Samoa in the Pacific after the Hobart where she will spend more time. Crew includes well known yachtie, Mike 'Zappa' Bell, and while it might not be his fastest ride to Hobart, it is guaranteed to be a comfortable one.

SV Tusitala is a 2007 Leopard 43 Sailing Catamaran designed by Robertson and Caine. John Robertson and the late Jerry Caine founded Roberston and Caine LTD, South Africa’s largest boat builder, in 1991. She was build in South Africa and made to San Diego own her own keels .

We are just getting started. We are saving our pennies and working on the boat. Some day we plan to throw off our bow line and head out and explore the world. Check out our videos

  We completed the restoration, repower, and rewire of a 31' Chris Craft Constellation. A total of 3400 hours was put into this little yacht. 

Skip built this Custom Sea Skiff 20 for one of his repeat customers, back in 2012.  She was built for the St. Johns River and for heading over to the Bahamas for a week or two stay.

Accommodations

Below deck you’ll find a warm, bright and inviting interior with plenty of space to stretch out, and the perfect set-up for a couple looking do some extended cruising. The L-shaped galley is to port, and the forward facing nav station and spacious head to starboard. Ahead is an open and inviting main salon that takes advantage of TUSITALA's 12’4” beam. There’s a large U-shaped settee to port that offers a great space for dining and lots of useable storage beneath. The settee to starboard creates a fantastic conversation pit and is a great spot to stretch out with a book. No matter the season, you’ll stay comfortable with the reverse-cycle air conditioning and the Webasto diesel heater that's ducted throughout the boat! The large panoramic overhead fixed ports keep the space bright and the Lewmar opening hatch and two opening ports keep it airy. The salon floor of the Beneteau 373 is pressurized laminate which is extremely durable and nearly every floorboard is removable, allowing for excellent access to the bilge, plumbing & thru hulls.

A spacious double berth in the aft cabin sleeps two adults comfortably. With an overhead opening hatch and an opening port, the cabin gets good light and ventilation with the addition of a 12V fan. A large hanging locker to port and an additional locker allows you to stow all necessities away and keep the cabin organized. Two reading lights let you tuck in with a book (or those charts to plan the next day's adventure) before dozing off. There is an access panel behind the companionway steps for easy access to the back of the engine.

The head of the Beneteau 373 is extremely spacious for a 37' boat. Located to starboard of the companionway, it's nicely tucked behind the nav station and doesn't impede on the living spaces of the interior. The separate shower compartment with a teak seat and hand-held flexible shower head make freshening up easy, even while underway. There are plenty of storage options for your toiletries and hooks to hang towels or wet clothing.

There is fantastic access to the swim platform through the tilting helmsman's seat, making it easy to board the dinghy or take a dip in the water. While you're back there, take advantage of the hot/cold cockpit shower to rinse off after a swim.
