This classy harbourside newcomer serves seafood with a South American slant.

yacht club restaurant auckland

The packed Viaduct bar and eatery scene has welcomed a classy newcomer with the Viaduct Yacht Club. Tucked just on the edge of the strip, VYC pays homage to its harbourside location with a South American-inspired (mostly) seafood menu and a tasteful ocean-inspired bar with plenty of seaside paraphernalia (think a model boat, black and white photography and decorative oars) dotted around the place.

Starting our VYC feast, we ordered the kingfish ceviche ($21), which isn't really anything like any traditional ceviche I've had, but I'm not mad about it either. Typically in a ceviche you'd find accompaniments like toasted corn, sweet potatoes, plantain chips, some onion and so on included (it's not a very aesthetically pretty dish, but it tastes insane), but VYC's chef has stripped all that back to lemon-cooked diced kingfish cubes with pomegranate. It's a nice, sharp opener and the pomegranate seeds were a bright counterpoint to the kingfish.

For our next dish, I was coaxed by my plus one to order the $25 heirloom tomato salad, which I normally wouldn't go for because I've been scarred by too many disappointing buffalo cheeses that chew like cheap tofu. But I've gone through some growth since then and I was ready to embrace the heirloom salad once again. It's not a main to have on its own, but it works really well as a nice, fresh addition to a shared menu with its sharp green, yellow and red tomatoes, and the gorgeously soft buffalo cheese. My only critique would be that it's a bit hefty on the wallet for what is oddly described as a 'bigger' dish alongside heavyweights like the lamb rump and beef lamito [sic] steak sandwich.

What I really want to spend time writing about is the Argentinian choripan ($18), which is a deceptively simple yet gorgeous sausage in a bun, and is so much more than the sum of its parts. For one, it is damn near authentic. When I lived in Buenos Aires I used hoon down choripan almost on a daily basis along the famous Puerto Madero choripan strip (taking this opportunity to make a belated apology to my arteries), so I feel like I qualify as a bit of a chori conniseur and can spot the contenders from the pretenders. The upmarket Viaduct Yacht Club's choripan would easily slot right in amongst the Puerto Madero stalls. The L'Authentique chorizo is stunning and complex, the chimichurri has that nice vinegar bite without being overwhelming and the slightly toasted bun just elevates the chori even further. 10/10 stunning, it would pair amazingly with a cold beer.

We also had a spaghetti nero ($35) and grilled fish tacos ($18). The spaghetti nero's Cloudy Bay clams were high quality (as per anything from Cloudy Bay), but the peppery aspect of the dish hit like a freight train. The fish tacos were pretty delicious and showed some true avocado generosity (a regrettable rarity in the restaurant scene) but would've loved to see a crunchy element in there to elevate it a bit further.

Drinks-wise, I think VYC may potentially just knock all their cocktails out of the park, but I'm currently on a detox so I had to practice some self-control. Instead, I started with the 'Kelpie' mocktail ($12), a really crisp apple, lemon and ginger honey mix that could've been complemented well with gin, but I didn't really miss it either. This was followed by a 'Packham Highball' ($12), a nice, warming pear, orgeat, lime and mint number. My plus one had the 'Bosun's Call' ($16), consisting of vodka, hibiscus, rosehip, pomegranate, pineapple, lemon, whey and rooibos tea. Our bartender excitedly explained that this was one of the first prohibition-era drinks and that it included a type of spiced and reduced milk (hence the rooibos) which was invented in that era.

VYC is a nice addition to the scene, I'm grateful to them for reinstating my trust in buffalo cheese, and I'd happily come back for their choripan on a semi-regular basis (sorry in advance, arteries) as well as to do a more thorough investigation of their intriguing cocktail menu, particularly the VYC espresso martini which comes with vodka, buttered cognac, coffee and Oreo crumb.

Bucklands Beach Yacht Club

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Went in here on our first night in Half Moon Bay because the setting was so nice. We had a couple of drinks just as the sun was disappearing - a nice experience looking over the marina. The bar staff were friendly and the place... was spotlessly clean - would go again. More

Nice views of the harbour with ferries and ship movements. Not very busy when we went but Very nice food recommend for luch.

This yacht club has spectacular views over some of the many yachts, that make Auckland the City of Sails, and views extend all the way to Rangitoto. The Boatshed now offers roast buffet meals on Wednesday’s and Sundays and trivia nights on a Wednesday night.... These cost $25 for a three course meal. We have tried these three times. The meal for Fathers Day was delicious - thick green vegetable soup, ham, chicken, roast vegetables and salad plus pavlova and other desserts. The other roasts have been a little more variable - with one being tender and tasty and a beef one being tough and dry. However the views always make it worthwhile. The ambience of the restaurant has improved with a recent makeover. Generally good value for money. More

yacht club restaurant auckland

A lovely outlook, good atmosphere and has been done up since last visit. Food is good, but some of mains with chips 'n salad leave one feeling peckish!

we went to this place for a family birthday . It is a very nice place to eat at . the menu had a good variety of food to offer . Good service very big meals so got value for money

Great food. Lots of people so a nice friendly atmosphere. Can get noisy, but hey thats part of the fun,

The yacht club is smart and recently refurbished in the waterfront. The service is cheerful and friendly. The menu is family cooking rather than fine dining.

The BBYC is a Charted Club, but welcomes visitors to the restaurant and bar. Over looking the BBYC marina, the club offers an outlook as close to the water as you can possibly get. Recently refurbished, the decor is modern and clean. Food on offer... varies from snacks and burgers through to full meals, with the rump steak, lamb rack, and fish dishes all highly recommended. Tantalise Your Taste Buds At This Sensational ‘Dining In The Dark’ Food Experience

Auckland's Viaduct Yacht Club is turning off the lights for a foodie experience like no other. See upcoming Dining in the Dark dates here .

Marco Ruiz

Do dinner differently at Viaduct Yacht Club in Auckland when it hosts Fever’s sensational Dining in the Dark dinner series where your sense of taste is taken to the next level. An experience that’s been backed by psychologists as a way to amplify your taste buds, it’s time you find out for yourself if what you see on the plate limits the flavour of your food.

This special event promises to elevate your meal to a whole other dimension by leaving just you, your taste buds and your sense of smell to enjoy a three-course meal. You might struggle at first with the cutlery, but soon the flavours and textures of what you’re eating will explode on your palate. Sounds a little bit incredible, right?

Get your tickets to Dining in the Dark here at Auckland’s Viaduct Yacht Club.

Guests will be led into the barely-lit space by a guide who’ll be on hand to make sure you don’t bump into anything on your way in and blindfolds will be provided to all guests , which will help to heighten your senses. They also help stop you from peeking at what’s on your plate and ruin the experience.

Guests have the option of choosing from a meat, seafood or vegan set menu prior to the event to ensure that they don’t eat something they don’t want to. However, that’s pretty much all the information you get about your meal and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

💬 Brendan B. – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Amazing night out! It was such a great experience. The Fever organisers and the restaurant staff were incredible and the food (and wine) were fantastic. I’m glad everyone had a blindfold on as we were licking the plate!”

💬 Devon P. – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Fabulous from start to finish. Waiters were great and welcoming and then food was amazing! Definitely would recommend and can’t wait to come back!”

Auckland’s hills and shores wrap around the sparkling Waitemata Harbour, making it a natural venue for boating of all types. The foundations of the city were laid in 1840 and the occasion was immediately marked by a regatta on the harbour. It was an appropriate portent of things to come as yachting and boating flourished on the harbour and ultimately grew to enjoy an international reputation.

Eleven years later, a small group of yachtsmen made the first attempt to establish an Auckland Yacht Club. It was shortlived, as were several subsequent efforts at getting a club off the ground.

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron traces its origin back to the 1871 incarnation of the Auckland Yacht Club, with 30 yachts and 120 members on its register.

By then, the city had grown from a scattering of tents and shacks into a much more substantial and thriving venture, with the harbour playing a central role in its progress.

By the turn of the century, yacht racing was a thriving sport, attracting crowds of spectators and detailed reports in the local newspapers. Under the leadership of some of the city’s prominent captains of industry and commerce, the AYC showed continued growth.

A tremendous rivalry between the Logan and Bailey boatbuilding families spurred the growth of an outstanding fleet of racing yachts, most of which joined the AYC fleet.

In 1901, the AYC changed its name to the New Zealand Yacht Squadron. The following year the Squadron celebrated a major milestone when it received a warrant in the name of King Edward VII elevating its status to a Royal club.

With this recognition membership numbers almost doubled from 157 in 1901 to 300 in 1903.

During both world wars, yacht racing was largely suspended in Auckland. Members of the RNZYS served in all theatres of both wars and in all the armed services. A number of members who owned launches and were not able to serve abroad, were involved in harbour defence and patrol duties.

To accommodate steady growth, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron moved through a succession of rented premises in the city until in 1955 it bought a handsome two-storey brick house in Parliament Street with sweeping views over the Waitemata Harbour. A decade later, the RNZYS acquired its current premises at Westhaven, first as a lease and subsequently as a purhase.

From the 1960s, the RNZYS was at the forefront of a steady rise in international competition. In 1966, James Davern sailed his yacht Fidelis across the Tasman Sea and swept to line honours victory in the grueling 630 mile Sydney-Hobart Race. Fidelis set a new race record and the 17-hour margin between 1 st and 2 nd still stands as the longest in the race’s history.

Three years later, Chris Bouzaid and a RNZYS crew took on the elite of international yacht racing. Travelling to Heligoland, Germany, Bouzaid and his Rainbow II crew won the prestigious One Ton Cup against a line up of seasoned competitors from the USA, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Holland and Switzerland.

On the foundations laid by these successes, the RNZYS trophy cabinets have played host to some of the biggest prizes in world yachting including the Half, One and Two-Ton Cups, the Admiral’s Cup, the Kenwood Cup, the Champagne Mumm World Cup, the Whitbread Round the World Trophy, the Louis Vuitton Trophy and the America’s Cup.

Carrying the RNZYS burgee into battle, Team New Zealand won the America’s Cup in San Diego in 1995, then successfully defended it on the Hauraki Gulf in 2000.

After losing to Switzerland in 2003, the RNZYS became the only yacht club in the world to challenge and win the America’s Cup twice when Emirates Team New Zealand scored a 7-1 victory over Oracle Team USA in Bermuda in 2017.

Coinciding with the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s 150th sesquicentenary in 2021, Emirates Team New Zealand successfully defended the 36th America’s Cup in Auckland, defeating Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli 7-3 in the America’s Cup Match and ensuring the RNZYS remains the Home of the America’s Cup.

By agreement between the RNZYS and Emirates Team New Zealand, the 2024 defence of the America’s Cup will take place in Barcelona, Spain. The Challenger of Record is the Royal Yacht Squadron.

The upmarket Viaduct Yacht Club's choripan would easily slot right in amongst the Puerto Madero stalls.
