The 10 Most Memorable Yachts in Movies

Yachts equate to luxury in real life and on the big screen, and they've been featured in a huge list of hit films. Sometimes yachts are used for romantic interludes, other times they're put to work as the ultimate getaway vessel or as the scene of an ostentatious celebration.  No matter what the occasion, the main point of inserting any yacht into any film is to elicit some kind of "ooh" or "ahh" from the audience.  These movies accomplish that and more.

In no particular order, here are 10 of the most memorable yachts that have been featured in movies.

1. Usher, Entourage (2015)

Usher, also known as Mr. Terrible, is the 47 meter superyacht in the 2015 movie Entourage. On screen, it symbolizes the decadent lifestyle of main character Vincent Chase, played by actor Adrian Grenier. This yacht was fitting for the movie, as it really is as lavish as it looks. It sports an elevator, spacious sundeck, Jacuzzi, five luxurious cabins, and has been used for partying off the coast of Florida and in the Caribbean in real life. It accommodates up to 12 guests and was engineered to be a powerful performer.

2. Northern Cross aka Manticore, Goldeneye (1995)

One of Pierce Brosnan's most memorable performances as Bond was in 1995's Goldeneye, in which he saves the world from a global financial terror plot. In the film, the yacht Northern Cross was called Manticore and served as the residence of smooth assassin Xenia and her crew. Northern Cross is actually available for charter in the Baltic Sea, and it costs tens of thousands of dollars to do so. The 43 meter yacht hosts up to 12 passengers and has six fabulous suites. It ranks as one of the favorite yachts in movies among Bond fans.

3. R Rendezvous aka Left Hand, Donnie Brasco (1997)

Few who have seen the crime drama Donnie Brasco will forget the yacht seen in the movie, Left Hand. It was an integral part of the plot, not just a nice showpiece, but its looks alone make it one of the more memorable yachts in movies. Called R Rendezvous off-screen, the 34 meter yacht was produced in 1992 and it still stands today. Those with the cash to charter R Rendezvous get to enjoy its onboard Jacuzzi, big sundeck, and three cabins with plush amenities.

4. Attessa, Overboard (1987)

Attessa was the yacht featured in the 1987 romantic comedy Overboard, starring Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. The interesting thing is this yacht actually belongs to a super rich man named Dennis R. Washington. He's an industrialist worth several billion dollars who loaned the 144 foot long Attessa to the crew while the movie was in production. Washington also lent the boat to the producers of the 1993 Demi Moore film Indecent Proposal.

5. Kingdom 3KR aka Flying Saucer, Never Say Never Again (1983)

Kingdom 3KR, the yacht seen in the 1983 Bond film Never Say Never Again, was special for several reasons. Not only was it in Sean Connery's final movie in the franchise, it was the most expensive yacht in the world at one time. Kingdom 3KR also has an interesting history. Donald Trump bought the 86 meter superyacht for a whopping $29 million, revamped it, and dubbed it the "Trump Princess". He later sold it for $40 million to a Saudi billionaire flush with cash in 1991. The yacht now has its own movie theater onboard, a helipad, dance floor, and can host up to 22 passengers in 11 suites.

6. Lady M aka Naomi, The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

The Wolf of Wall Street is all about excess and its pitfalls, so you know the film had to include a super swanky yacht. In the movie Leonardo DiCaprio's character, Jordan Belfort, gifts the yacht to his wife, played by Margot Robbie . The boat is named after her, Naomi. The vessel was shown prominently onscreen as the site of raucous parties and all types of debauchery.

In actuality, the 44 meter Lady M was built for luxury cruising and has a host of lavish details. A professional grade gourmet kitchen, marble flooring, a baby grand piano, wet bar, Jacuzzi, and five stylish staterooms all combine to make it super impressive and one of the most expensive yachts in movies.

7. Helios 2 aka Anson Bell, Syriana (2005)

Matt Damon and George Clooney gave award winning performances in the 2005 drama Syriana, and the Anson Bell -- real name Helios 2 -- was at the center of the action. The 51 meter custom yacht has an aluminum superstructure and hull, along with a state of the art stabilization system. Engineered by esteemed brand Palmer Johnson, Helios 2 really is the epitome of luxury in all its forms, just as it was in Syriana. It has five gorgeous cabins and can be enjoyed by up to 12 guests.

8. M3 aka Soufriere, Casino Royale (2006)

Daniel Craig made his first appearance as 007 in 2006's Casino Royale, and he did so while looking suave on the M3. It was called Soufriere in the film, and was custom made for the movie in 2005 by none other than British company Spirit Yachts. When it carried Bond and Vesper Lynd on a romantic trip through Venice, it became the first yacht to travel the Grand Canal in three centuries. The 32 meter sailing yacht can reach a top speed of 43 knots and has four cabins onboard. It also has advanced media systems, a spa pool, and enough water toys to keep anyone entertained for hours.

9. Wallpower 188 aka Renovatio, The Island (2005)

Ewan McGregor starred in the 2005 Michael Bay film The Island, in which he notably sketches the look of a yacht that's imprinted in his psyche. A modern sci-fi flick about a utopia needs an awesome boat, right? That role was filled by Renovatio, which is really called the Wallpower 188 and was built in 2002. This particular yacht oozes class and its angular profile makes it stand out. The 36 meter vessel reaches a top speed of 60 knots, has a Rolls-Royce Kamewa water jet onboard, and dons a color shifting exterior. The Wallpower 188 has won many yacht and design awards, and is renowned around the world for its innovative features and style. It was put on the market after the movie's production for $33 million.

10. White Knight, The Bourne Identity (2002)

The White Knight yacht was shown in 2002 in the first installment of the Bourne franchise, The Bourne Identity. Jason Bourne, played brilliantly by Matt Damon, goes onto the boat to attack one of his targets. Bourne ultimately doesn't carry out the mission, but White Knight looks spectacular nonetheless.

People can actually charter it in the Mediterranean, and it was built in 1985. The yacht underwent renovation in 2010 to make it better than ever. It now has 8 large cabins, an outdoor dining area, and a wealth of amenities and entertainment options.

1. the glastron gt-150.

Film: Live and Let Die (1973)

James Bond boats

A true Bond classic, the Glastron GT-150 featured in Live and Let Die takes us back to the ’70s in all its glory. Bond’s sleek escape from Mr. Big’s henchmen was nothing short of breathtaking. With a white and orange colour scheme, this boat was the epitome of style at the time. Its aerodynamic design, complete with a sliding windshield, and the ability to pop up on its hydrofoils for a high-speed chase made it an unforgettable addition to the Bond universe.

Estimated Cost: Around USD 5,000 (in 1973)

2. The Wetbike

Film: The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

James Bond boats

For a change of pace, Bond took to the water on a Wetbike in The Spy Who Loved Me . This one-man jet ski not only allowed Bond to move swiftly across the water but also had the added bonus of turning into a mini-submarine when needed. The Wetbike was the perfect gadget for an underwater adventure and showed Bond’s adaptability in any situation. It was an actual (and pretty powerful!) watercraft introduced in 1978, which only goes to show how Bond was always ahead of his time with the latest technology.

Estimated Cost: Approximately USD 3,000 (in 1977)

3. The Q Boat

Film: The World Is Not Enough (1999)

James Bond boats

The Q Boat in The World Is Not Enough is a masterpiece of espionage engineering. Packed with hidden torpedoes, machine guns, and an ejector seat (courtesy of Q, of course), this unassuming boat became Bond’s weapon of choice in a high-speed pursuit along the Thames. This vessel, a creation by Doug Riddle, boasts a 300 bhp V8 engine that drives a jet propulsion system. And for that extra touch of Hollywood flair, it’s equipped with two rear-mounted faux jets that ignite into blazing flames. Its sleek design and arsenal of gadgets made it a standout addition to the Bond arsenal. The 14-minute (Q) boat chase in the pre-credit opening sequence of the film is the longest in 007 history.

Estimated Cost: USD 37,500 (As of 2022)

4. The Spirit 54 Yacht

Film: Casino Royale (2006)

Bond 007

When Bond needs a break from saving the world, he heads to the Bahamas aboard the Spirit 54 Yacht in Casino Royale . This stunning wooden yacht, with its classic lines and luxurious interior, perfectly complements Bond’s quiet moments with Vesper Lynd. It’s a symbol of elegance and sophistication, reminding us that even spies need a little downtime.

Estimated Cost: USD 1.5 million (in 2006)

james bond 007

In Quantum of Solace , Bond commandeers the Sunseeker Sovereign 17, a luxury motor yacht that perfectly embodies the blend of speed, style, and substance that the Bond franchise is known for. This yacht’s sleek design and powerful engines allowed Bond to chase down villains in a breathtaking finale in Italy ‘s waters. The Sunseeker Sovereign became a symbol of Bond’s ability to tackle danger with flair.

From high-speed pursuits to tranquil moments on the open seas, these boats have added an extra layer of intrigue and glamour to the world of James Bond. As we eagerly anticipate the next instalment in the iconic franchise, one thing is for sure: Bond’s aquatic adventures will continue to be the stuff of legend, with boats that are as suave and unforgettable as the spy himself. Originally built in 1970, the Sunseeker Sovereign 17 was fully restored in 2005 to celebrate the company’s early years and long history of designing and building luxury motor yachts.

Estimated Cost: Approximately USD 4.5 million (in 2008)

6. ‘Delos’ (ex ‘Aurora’)

Film: From Russia With Love (1963)

007

Not only did the 293-foot Delos serve as the iconic Spectre headquarters in the 1963 classic From Russia with Love , marking Sean Connery’s second portrayal of the suave 007, but it also played an unexpected role as the inspiration behind the beloved TV series The Love Boat , as revealed by its current owner, Christopher Wilson.

Originally named ‘Wappen von Hamburg,’ this remarkable German-built cruise ship was constructed in 1955 by the renowned Blohm & Voss Shipyard. Initially designed as a luxurious 75m, diesel-powered motor yacht, it was built for one of the owners of an Italian motor car manufacturer. The ‘Wappen von Hamburg’ featured state-of-the-art engineering and had a top speed of 20 knots. In its original configuration, it accommodated up to 22 guests in 11 opulent cabins, along with staff quarters, a bar, an entertainment lounge, a games room, and a gym.

After serving in the Mediterranean Sea, the Aurora underwent an extensive 18-month refit to bring her into the 21st century. During this transformation, her length was increased by 8.7 metres, her beam stretched to 13.93 metres, and her gross weight increased by 40%.

As of 2020, M/Y Aurora was reported to be located in Sochi, Russia, where it serves as a luxurious hotel, private club, and business centre, showcasing its storied history to a new generation of enthusiasts.

Estimated cost: Priceless, considering its unique history and transformation.

7. ‘Kingdom 5KR’ (ex ‘Nabila’)

Film: Never Say Never Again (1983)

007

Back in 1980, the illustrious MY Flying Saucer had its origins as a vessel commissioned by the Saudi arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi and crafted by Benetti. However, its journey didn’t stop there; it soon found itself in the glamorous world of Hollywood alongside the legendary Sean Connery in the 1983 film Never Say Never Again . Following its cinematic debut, the MY Flying Saucer underwent a series of remarkable transformations. First, it came under the ownership of the Sultan of Brunei, who later sold it to none other than Donald Trump, leading to its rechristening as the “Trump Princess.”

As time flowed on, in 1991, the boat found itself under the patronage of another Saudi billionaire tycoon, Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal. With its new name, “Kingdom 5KR,” this magnificent vessel became a fixture, almost permanently moored in the enchanting locale of Antibes on the sun-kissed Côte d’Azur. Thus, MY Flying Saucer’s remarkable journey through both Hollywood and high-profile ownerships adds yet another layer to its storied history.

The yacht was built in 1980 by the yacht builder Benetti at a cost of USD 100 million (equivalent to USD 355 million in 2022). Its original interior was designed by Luigi Sturchio. According to reports, the yacht can reach a top speed of 20 knots and has a cruising speed of 17 knots, with a range of 8,500 nautical miles. With a gross tonnage of 1768.0 GT and a beam of 13.23 m, the vessel comfortably accommodates 22 guests in 11 staterooms and 31 crew members.

Estimated cost: A whopping USD 500 million. (2022)

8. ‘Trafalgar’ (ex ‘Moonmaiden II’)

Film: The Living Daylights (1987)

James bond 007

In the pre-title sequence of the action-packed 1987 film The Living Daylights , Timothy Dalton made his unforgettable debut as the suave and daring secret agent, James Bond. And while his mission to board the Moonmaiden II yacht was anything but conventional, it undoubtedly added to the film’s thrilling charm. In a fiery entrance, Bond descends from the sky via parachute, landing squarely on the aft deck of the Moonmaiden II. It’s safe to say that Agent 007 rarely opts for the ordinary when there’s an opportunity for cinematic flair.

Fast forward to the present day, and the Moonmaiden II, now rechristened as “Trafalgar,” is on the lookout for a new owner. This classic canoe-stern yacht, hailing from the stylish era of the 1970s, boasts timeless appeal and is currently available for acquisition through Ocean Independence. With an asking price of USD 2,500,000, this vessel offers not only a piece of cinematic history but also the promise of exciting adventures on the high seas.

Estimated cost: USD 2,500,000 million

9. Pruva Regina

Film: SkyFall (2012)

james bond 007 boats

In SkyFall , Daniel Craig’s James Bond and Severine (Bérénice Marlohe) sail aboard the stunning Pruva Regina yacht, gliding through Turkey’s sapphire waters. This actual superyacht is a 183-ft schooner built in Turkey by Pruva Yachting in 2011. Regina boasts a maximum speed of 12 knots and can accommodate 12 guests in two master suites, two double staterooms, and two twin cabins, along with a crew of nine. This James Bond yacht was listed for sale in 2012 for a princely sum of USD 14 million. And here’s a fun fact: the shower scene, supposedly taking place aboard the yacht, was actually filmed in room 712 of the Four Seasons Hotel at Canary Wharf in London.

From high-speed pursuits to serene moments on open waters, these boats have added an extra layer of intrigue and glamour to the world of James Bond. As we eagerly anticipate the next chapter in this iconic franchise, one thing remains certain: Bond’s nautical adventures will continue to be legendary, with boats as suave and unforgettable as the spy himself.

Estimated cost: USD 14 million (2012)

In 1979, it was Roger Moore who starred as James Bond in Moonraker , and who sped along the Amazon River in the Glaston Carlson CV23HT speedboat with the enemy in hot pursuit. The hard-top model was one of only 300 to be made, of which only three were given its distinctive silver metal-flake finish. The scene comes to a dramatic close as James Bond manages to escape over Iguazu Falls.

Find a Boat for Your Next Adventure

Captain Ron

Mandatory watching for any sailor, Captain Ron with Kurt Russell is remarkably accurate from a technical standpoint except for one glaring piece of silliness as it relates to sailboats. See if you can spot it. Any sailor worth his/her salt has most of the key lines memorized and despite its goofiness, there are a few scenes in this film that will ring remarkably true for anyone who’s spent time on an old boat.

A fascinating 2019 documentary about Tracy Edwards and her all-woman crew in the 1989 Whitbread Round the World Race. You can’t beat this true story for sheer grit and an important history lesson. There’s a bit of humor as well if just in the great fashions and bad mustaches of the times.

Loosely based on a true story from 1983, Adrift is the tale of a young couple on a yacht delivery. They become dismasted when they sail into the path of a hurricane and the rest is the story of the sheer will to survive. Shailene Woodley does an impressive acting job in this tale with a twist. Watch this one alone if you ever want your significant other to go distance cruising.

A fictionalized tale of the very real and very disturbed Donald Crowhurst, this 2017 film centers on the 1968 Golden Globe Race, the first singlehanded, non-stop circumnavigating competition. Colin Firth captures the misery of impending failure and the film puts the rigors of sailing in context as Crowhurst faces the open ocean and an uncertain future alone.

White Squall

Not exactly a chuckle fest, White Squall is based on a real tragedy from the 1960s. Jeff Bridges as the stalwart captain in charge of a training vessel and a bunch of wealthy newbie sailors relies on discipline to keep an orderly ship. When disaster strikes, it’s an uncomfortable study of what it means to be a captain.

A mixed cast of real America’s Cup racers and thespians like Mathew Modine and Jennifer Grey act their hearts out in this tale of competitive drama. The plot is thin, the dialogue is stilted and the acting is at times cringe-worthy, but the cinematography is phenomenal. You can’t beat this movie for sheer beauty.

More in the horror genre is Dead Calm with Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill cruising a remote stretch of the South Pacific when they come across the evil Billy Zane. This one’s full of completely improbably scenarios, sailing inaccuracies and a young Kidman’s bizarre perm, but it’s a bit of twisted fun that will put the Academy Awards in perspective.

Spielberg’s major directorial debut couldn’t be more iconic and quotes from Jaws can be entertaining at any happy hour. If you get a chance, watch the two-hour making of this film as well to appreciate the end product. Not everyone sees this movie as a comedy but if you watch closely, you’ll see a bit of humor.

Captain Phillips

In 2009, the US-flagged container ship Maersk Alabama was taken over by Somali pirates. Tom Hanks convincingly plays the captain during this hostage drama that was made into an award-winning feature film in 2013. This is a portrayal of leadership during its most taught moments.

Finally, a classic thriller from Alfred Hitchcock based on a John Steinbeck novel. After a German U-boat sinks a passenger ship, the survivors crowd into a lifeboat along with a German officer they pull from the water. You’ll not find a more convincing study of group dynamics and human nature than this well-crafted 1944 award winner.

There are probably 50 other nautical films that are well worth watching, so start with these and you may soon become a seafaring movie buff.

Yacht from TENET movie is revealed as $101m superyacht 'Planet Nine'

By Katia Damborsky   28 August 2020

What's the yacht from the movie 'Tenet' ? The name of the superyacht with the starring role in Tenet is 'Planet Nine' , a 73m/240' explorer yacht which is on the market for $101 million and available for private yacht charter from $650,000 p/week (+ expenses).

Christopher Nolan's 2020 action/thriller TENET has finally hit the big screens and is reeling in rave reviews, critical acclaim, and one pressing question; What's the name of yacht from the film?

The luxury yacht in question stars in a number of major scenes, including (spoilers ahead) the moment where Sator (Kenneth Branagh) travels back in time to a vacation with his wife Kat (Elizabeth Debicki), and the elusive ending where Kat realizes the woman jumping off the yacht is in fact, herself.

YachtCharterFleet is happy to reveal that the name of the yacht is 'Planet Nine'.

The yacht's name is actually quite fitting, given that the plot of Tenet revolves around finding nine objects that, when combined, will create an “Algorithm” that will reverse entropy for the entire planet and essentially kill all life on earth. Pretty bleak stuff; luckily the yacht itself is far from bleak.

Inside 'Planet Nine': The yacht from Tenet

Built in 2018, Planet Nine is a popular expedition vessel with a number of incredible features, including a full helideck and an incredible locker of water toys which includes scuba gear, inflatable trampolines, surf boards, inflatable canoes, Jet-Skis, and kite surfers.

She features exterior design from the renowned Tim Heywood, and interiors are by Mlinaric and Henry & Zervudachi. Her design teams have opted for a pared-back, minimal interior with a warm and inviting ambience that is achieved through Scandinavian style blonde woods, a neutral color palette and geometric accents.

The yacht boasts an exceptionally large 300 square foot Owner's deck complete with a private lounging area, generous en suite and office space for taking care of any business while at sea.

There is accommodation for 11 further guests in eight other cabins.

Planet Nine is a true 'go-anywhere' yacht, meaning she is perfectly well-equipped for cruising around some of the world's most remote destinations. An impressive home cinema and a library/conference suite are the icing on the cake, so she is ideal for anyone looking to charter a seafaring exploring yacht that offers high-calibre luxury living.

Where were the Tenet yacht scenes filmed?

View of Ravello village, where the movie Tenet was filmed, on the Amalfi Coast in Italy

All of the yacht scenes in Tenet were filmed on location on Italy's Amalfi Coast, specifically off the coast of the popular medieval village of Ravello. Famed for its dizzying mountaintop situation and immaculate gardens that offer sweeping vistas over the water, Ravello is one of the beloved destinations for a superyacht charter on the Amalfi Coast .

If you're dreaming of a Tenet-style yacht getaway, you can check out our guide to yacht charter in Ravello. It's packed with itineraries, inspiration and our hand-picked YachtCharterFleet recommendations for things to see and do.

20 Best Sailing Movies of all Time

20 Best Sailing Movies of all Time | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

June 15, 2022

If you have been looking forward to curling up on the couch, grabbing a bowl of popcorn, and watching some captivating movies, this can be a good time. A good sailing movie can be perfect given that you'll hear a few lines that you're already familiar with when on the dock or setting sail.

This can be a perfect time to binge-watch some of the best sailing movies.

So in no particular order, we'll highlight 20 of the best sailing movies of all time. From the brutal and dramatic tales of man vs. sea to inspirational explorations and expeditions, we've covered it all. Keep reading and you'll be inspired while waiting to get off dry land when it's safe to do so.

Table of contents

All is Lost (2013)

For lone sailors, All is Lost is probably the best movie to give you a glimpse of what might go wrong for you if you decide to sail the big blue ocean alone. With a near-mute performance as an old man who loves sailing alone, Robert Redford puts in an almost quasi-silent performance by portraying the ordeal of what a lone sailor can undergo when the sea turns on you.

Directed by JC Chandor, there's only one person on the screen throughout the film. He's all alone in the vast sea with his damaged boat. He has to become tough, resourceful, and calm even when things turn against him. Single-character movies are a rarity even today but this is a great survival film that perfectly depicts what could happen even to the hardest lone sailors out there.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)

Directed by the talented Peter Weir, this critically-acclaimed movie was nominated for 10 Oscars and won for best cinematography and sound editing. Depicting the return of the high-seas adventure, this movie is skillfully and meticulously adapted from the historical novel by Patrick O'Brian set during the Napoleonic Wars and starring Russell Crowe.

Crowe plays an arrogant captain who pushes his ship crew to the limits while trying to capture a French warship. This movie offers action-packed battle scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This movie gives you an insight of what sailors undergo in their struggles to make it through the high-seas alive.

Captain Ron (1992)

With little sailing experience but with an inherited yacht moored on an offshore island Martin Short hires charismatic Captain Ron to take them back to Florida. The voyage isn't as easy as they expected as they have to face pirates, breakdowns, and other obstacles. They all get more than what they bargained for.

Portrayed by Kurt Russell, Captain Ron depicts the misadventures of a nominal sailing character that is hired by an upper-middle-class father to guide a yacht through the Caribbean. From the marine accidents, pirates, guerilla carnivals to malfunctioning equipment, and Russell's croaked absurdities, this movie is just full of double humor and worthy performance.

Wind (1992)

As one of the biggest races in competitive sailing, America's Cup is often associated with rich people competing in weird-looking boats. But this movie changes this as it takes viewers through the eyes of tanned and rugged Will Parker as played by Matthew Modine. He's hired by a self-made millionaire (Cliff Robertson) to lead his crew in the competition.

Together with his girlfriend Kate who is an equally skilled sailor, Parker intends to win America's Cup but Kate is thrown off the crew leaving Parker angry. When the crew loses America's Cup to the Australians, Parker decides to form his own syndicate to win back the cup.

White Squall (1996)

This movie follows a young man's adventure movie that follows a group of high school students who boards the brigantine ship called Albatross for their senior year at sea. They sail to the tip of South America and back. They get to accept responsibility, learn how to be sailors, and grow up.

The skipper of the ship, Christopher Sheldon together with the 13 teenage boys set sail for an eight-month voyage. The boys soon discover Sheldon's psyche gradations, rattling tension, and freak storms that sink the ship. As a sailor, you'll be disturbed by the fact that four students and two crew members drown, leaving skipper Sheldon facing a fierce tribunal, tortured conscience, and grieving parents and students.

Mutiny on the Bounty (1962)

As one of the greatest epic movies of the 1960s, English Captain Bligh is on a sea voyage to transport breadfruit from England to Jamaica. He is so abusive that he gets on the nerves of his crew members, especially 1st Lieutenant, Fletcher Christian.

Tension eases when they reach Jamaica and the crew indulges in the island's lifestyle but the captain claps some members of his crew in irons as they try to desert. Further abuses lead Fletcher to inspire a mutiny against the Captain. Fletcher and his men set the Captain and his loyal members afloat in a rowboat. This movie offers a realistic depiction of a larger-than-life character that most sailors are known for.

Dead Calm (1989)

Starring Billy Zane, Nicole Kidman, Sam Neil, and a gorgeous 60 ft. ketch, Dead Calm revolves around a mass-murderer who kidnaps and seduces a young beautiful woman after leaving a husband to die on a vessel whose crew he has just murdered.

This movie was filmed in the Whitsundays Islands of Australia, which is one of the best sailing destinations in the world. Bringing forth an epic combination of deadly sailing conditions , complete isolation from the rest of the world, and a skillful villain aboard the vessel, this movie is thrilling and will leave you looking behind your back whenever you're out there on the sea.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)

This adventure-comedy follows the high journeys of Steve Zissou, a character adaptation of French oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau. It follows his ocean expedition when tracking the ‘jaguar shark' that apparently ate his partner, Esteban.

Esteban had been working with Zissou on a documentary about mysterious circumstances by a shark. This is a sharp film with lots of fun and adventure on the sea.

Kon-Tiki (2012)

Legendary Norwegian explorer and ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl believes that the South Sea Islands were originally colonized by South Americans. Thor, who fears water and doesn't know how to swim, partakes on a voyage in 1947 to prove his belief. Together with five crew members, set sail from Peru on a balsa-wood ancient raft.

Even though their only modern equipment is a radio, they have to navigate through the ocean while relying on stars and ocean currents and they achieve the impossible after exhausting three months at the sea. This is a very spirited adventure that depicts what's possible when we believe in our dreams.

Maidentrip (2013)

A 14-year-old sailor by the name Laura Dekker sets sail on a two-year voyage in pursuit of her dream to become the world's youngest sailor. Laura sets out from Holland and sails throughout the world. Apart from the occasional foul language that Laura uses now and then on the documentary, this is an excellent film that shows what one can achieve when he/she lives her dream and works hard towards achieving it.

The documentary, however, doesn't suggest that Laura is alarmingly young to sail across the unforgiving Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Instead, she's depicted as an independent outsider who is looking for paradise in a never-ending sea.

Adrift (2018)

In most cases, sailors seem to never anticipate that they may sail directly into a catastrophic hurricane and this is exactly what Richard Sharp and Tami Oldham do when they sail directly in one of the worst hurricanes ever recorded in history.

Tami awakes in the aftermath of the hurricane to find their boat in ruins and Richard is badly injured. And because they do not have any hope that they would ever get help or get rescued, Tami is left with two options: sit there and perish or find strength and determination to save herself as well as the only man she's ever loved.

Turning Tide (En Solitaire) (2013)

In this daring tale, this movie portrays how a fearless sailor known as Yann Kermadec finds a lot of obstacles in his biggest race as a two-hander named Turning Tide falls flat. In a nail-biting tension, the story begins when Kermadec replaces the main skipper in the Vendee Globe on short notice.

After some smooth sailing, things go eerily wrong for the sailor as his ship is damaged and he's forced to anchor off the Canary Islands to repair it. When he gets back on his journey, he soon discovers that a Mauritanian teenage boy has sneaked inside the boat and he has no option but to sail with him at least until they cross the Atlantic Ocean.

The Old Man and the Sea (1958)

An old Cuban angler known as Spencer Tracy is so unlucky that he hasn't caught any fish in 84 days. And despite the commitment of a young boy to bring him food, the angler fears that he's forever lucky but catches a small fish on his 85th day, so he decides to keep fishing.

When one of his many fishing lines hooks a large marlin, he decides not to go back to the shore until he reels it in. For almost two days and nights, he has no choice but to sit there and do everything he can to redeem himself from what seems like a perpetual failure.

Morning Light (2008)

By entering the TRANSPAC, which is one of the world's best open-ocean competitions, 15 young men and women prepare for a sailing adventure of their lives. With world-class teachers, these sailors begin intense training in Hawaii but only reach a climax in an elimination process that comes in the form of who-stays-and-who-goes process.

This documentary follows these sailors for six months as they embark on a 2,300-mile sailing ordeal, which starts in Los Angeles and ends in Honolulu.

The Perfect Storm (2000)

Created by Wolfgang Petersen, The Perfect Storm is a blockbuster that's big on visuals and depicts an action-packed escapade on the water as Captain Billy Tyne and his crew set on a fishing expedition aboard a ship known as Andrea Gail.

They're soon caught up in a catastrophic destructive storm when they decide to risk the storm and have to deal with a very powerful hurricane. At the height of their fishing expedition, their ice machine breaks down and the only way to ensure that their catch doesn't go stale is by hurrying back to the shore to sell their catch. This is exactly why they decide to risk their lives and it doesn't turn out as they expected.

Captain Phillips (2013)

When Captain Richard Phillips takes command of an unarmed container ship known as MV Maersk Alabama from the port of Salalah in Oman, they anticipate that they'll be attacked by Somali Pirates on their way to Mombasa, Kenya.

They attack the ship and Captain Phillips has to use his wits and diplomacy to negotiate with the pirates and save his crew.

Maiden (2018)

As the saying goes; what a man can do a woman can do even better. This is exactly what's depicted by this sailing movie that follows the life of Tracy Edwards as she leads the first all-female crew when competing in the Whitbread Round the World Race.

Covering 33,000 miles and lasting for nine months, this is a truly grueling race that depicts the corrosive sexism that still exists in the sailing world as well as the ocean terrors that sailors have to deal with during voyages or competitions.

Chasing Bubbles (2016)

This is a captivating documentary that follows the journey of Alex Rust who is a free spirit who gives the normal life to sail around the world. Alex is brought up as a farm boy but becomes a stock trader in Indiana. At the age of 25, he decides to abandon his life in Chicago, buys a modest sailboat known as Bubbles and embarks on a very unique free-spirited voyage. It takes him three years to sail around the world and to quench his insatiable curiosity while meeting great people and fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming a free soul.

This is a breathtaking travelogue that depicts the sailing life of a truly absorbing character.

180° South (2010)

Directed by Chris Malloy, this is a sailing documentary that covers the journey of Jeff Johnson as he travels from Ventura, California to Patagonia in Chile. He does this to retrace the same trip covered by Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins in 1968.

While the two initial explorers made the journey on the land, Johnson travels by sea using a small boat.

Deep Water (2006)

This movie follows the true-life story of Donald Crowhurst, an inexperienced British sailor who enters the Golden Globe, which is the first nonstop boat race in the world. Donald puts up his home as collateral to gain financial backing to compete in the race but soon finds himself on the wrong end of things as he enters the race under-prepared.

Ridley Scott is one of the most acclaimed directors of all time, and here are the 20 best quotes from Ridley Scott's movies. Ridley Scott has been the mastermind behind all kinds of franchises and critically acclaimed films, with him directing, Alien , Blade Runner , Gladiator , Thelma & Louise , and more hits. From director Ridley Scott and writer David Scarpa comes Napoleon, a dramatic historical-epic film that follows the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte as he embarks on a lengthy French campaign of conquest. The film also focuses on his relationship with Josephine, his Empress and the love of his life, a relationship that was equal parts romantically intense and self-destructive.

Ridley Scott's most recent film, 2023's Napoleon , managed to generate one of the director's most memorable quotes, with this question being exclaimed by the titular Joaquin Phoenix character in the film. Although it is just one of many lines that Napoleon says, the line became instantly memorable for how humorous it is, with it getting memed online upon the release of Napoleon . Although it doesn't live up to some of Scott's other movie quotes, it is the most memorable one from Napoleon .

Unable to communicate with Earth and armed with little more than his scientific expertise as a botanist, Watney must find a way to survive on the barren planet until the next scheduled mission arrives.

In The Martian , astronaut Mark Watney becomes stranded on Mars, with him having to learn how to survive on the planet. Eventually, Watney learns how to grow crops, with him explaining to his log that a planet can be classified as colonized once a colonizer grows crops on it. Wantey follows this up by taking a jab at Neil Armstrong, with this being one of the funniest moments in The Martian , Ridley Scott's highest-grossing movie .

19 "Quality Is Remembered Long After Price Is Forgotten."

House of gucci, house of gucci.

Ridley Scott's House of Gucci is a 2021 drama based on Sara Gay Forden's biographical book "The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour", and inspired by the real-life family behind the famous fashion brand Gucci. With a star-studded cast that includes Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Jared Leto, Jack Huston, and Salma Hayek, the movie focuses on Patrizia Reggiani's determination to take over her husband's dynasty and the events that motivated her to kill him.

Ridley Scott's 2021 film House of Gucci is one of his biggest hits in recent years, with it exploring the titular design brand. At one point in the film, Aldo Gucci explains why Gucci's customers will pay such outrageous prices for the brand . According to the film, Gucci is synonymous with quality, and this line perfectly sums up the real-world brand as well as the world of the Ridley Scott film.

18 "People Don't Always Tell You What They Are Thinking. They Just See To It That You Don't Advance In Life."

The Silence of the Lambs

Hannibal (2001)

' Hannibal Lecter is one of the most terrifying villains in cinematic history, with the psychology of his character being one of the main points of exploration in the film. Because of this, Ridley Scott's Hannibal knew that it had to nail this aspect of the character, and this single line proves that it did. This small bit of Lecter's philosophy perfectly explains why he is the way he is, showing off his views on humanity and becoming a mainstay of The Silence of the Lambs franchise.

17 "I'd Go To War With You Any Day!"

Ridley Scott's G.I. Jane is one of the director's most famous war films, with it being full of lingo that is frequently heard in military settings. This line is one that has been taken out context many times due to how great of a line it is, with G.I. Jane using it to show the bond between the characters in such a serious setting.

16 "You'll Come To See That A Man Learns Nothing From Winning. The Act Of Losing, However, Can Elicit Great Wisdom."

A good year, a good year.

Ridley Scott's A Good Year is a unique film in his filmography, with it being a romance set in a Provence vineyard. Due to the slower pace of the film compared to Scott's other works, A Good Year is full of memorable quotes about the nature of life , but none are as strong as this one. This A Good Year quote can be applied to the lives of many viewers outside of the film, showing how important it is to learn from one's mistakes.

15 "Big Things Have Small Beginnings"

Ridley Scott's controversial Alien prequel Prometheus

2012's Prometheus is the fifth installment in the Alien franchise and was directed by Ridley Scott. Starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, and Guy Pearce, the film acts as a direct prequel to 1979's Alien.

is a film full of platitudes, but this quote is actually pretty profound given the circumstances surrounding the line. The events of Prometheus lead to all of the chaos that takes place throughout the Alien franchise, with it foreshadowing the dark events that are to come. Although Prometheus divided the Alien fanbase upon its release, this line is one of the best in Scott's filmography.

14 "Yes. I Read You. The Answer Is Negative."

Alien (1979).

Alien is a sci-fi horror-thriller by director Ridley Scott that follows the crew of a spaceship known as the Nostromo. After the staff of the merchant's vessel perceives an unknown transmission as a distress call, its landing on the source moon finds one of the crew members attacked by a mysterious lifeform, and they soon realize that its life cycle has merely begun.

Although this is far from the last Alien quote on this list, it is still one of the most memorable quotes from the Alien franchise . Ripley makes this comment in response to being asked to open the airlock, with this being the final line in her repeated disobedience of her superior officer. This line shows just how strong-willed Ripley is , with it highlighting why she managed to survive the Xenomorph attacks throughout the franchise when other characters didnt.

12 "Once That First Bullet Goes Past Your Head, Politics And All That Sh*t Just Goes Right Out The Window."

Black hawk down.

Black Hawk Down recounts the harrowing true story of a U.S. military mission gone awry in Somalia. Tasked with capturing a warlord, elite soldiers find themselves in a fierce battle against Somali militia forces.

Black Hawk Down is one of the most famous war movies of all time, with it providing a harrowing look at the Battle of Mogadishu, where an American Black Hawk helicopter was shot down in dangerous territory. Much of the film is dedicated to the soldiers wondering why they are intervening in the first place, leading to some arguments. However, once this point is made, a somber truth comes to light, with many of these soldiers dying due to the actions made by people thousands of miles away.

Napoleon Continues A Terrible 22-Year Ridley Scott Streak, But Gladiator 2 May Break It

11 "the loudest one in the room is the weakest one in the room.", american gangster.

Denzel Washington's Frank Lucas is a terrifying figure in American Gangster

American Gangster , with him using this quote to explain why he has succeeded where others have failed. This is a fantastic look into the psychology of Frank Lucas, with it being the best quote in American Gangster .

10 "I Think You've Been Afraid All Your Life"

In Gladiator , Commodus agrees to fight Maximus to the death, with him going on a monologue and telling Maximus' story before agreeing to the battle. Maximus is surprised to see that Commodus has agreed to fight him , with Commodus asking " Why not? Do you think I am afraid? " Maximus then replies with an absolute jaw-dropping line, showing just how much confidence he has in the face of the Emperor.

9 "I'm Gonna Have To Science The Sh*t Out Of This"

Throughout The Martian , astronaut Mark Watney manages to maintain a positive attitude in the face of overwhelmingly negative circumstances. After describing how difficult his survival will be, Watney proclaims that he will have to " science the sh*t " out of his situation. Although this is a humorous line, it is actually a perfect summation of how Watney is handling his situation, with it being the attitude that eventually allows Watney to return home at the end of the film.

8 They Won't Understand Why We Do It. They Won't Understand That It's About The Men Next To You, And That's It."

Black Hawk Down gives a heavy focus to the brotherhood between the soldiers in the movie , and this quote perfectly sums up how they feel about each other. Hoot uses this quote to explain how he will respond when people ask him why he enlisted, showing that he has an immense amount of care for those fighting beside him, one that the people who didn't fight won't understand.

7 "My Husband Wasn't Sweet To Me. Look How I Turned Out."

Thelma & louise.

This is one of Ridley Scott's funniest lines, with it coming from the crime comedy movie Thelma & Louise . In it, Thelma decides to leave her husband and go to a bar with her friend Louise, leading to a murder and a life on the lam. This line is said by Thelma when she decides to let a State Trooper live, with her calling back to the events that sent her on this journey in a hilarious way.

6 "This Is Ripley, Last Survivor Of The Nostromo, Signing Off."

Ridley Scott's Alien ends with the Xenomorph killing off each member of the Nostromo , with Ellen Ripley being the sole survivor. Ripley delivers this harrowing line in a surprisingly monotone way , with it striking viewers as a fantastic final quote.

5 Quite An Experience To Live In Fear, Isn't It? That's What It Is To Be A Slave."

Blade runner.

The original Blade Runner is a sci-fi neo-noir film set in 2019 in a dystopian cyber-punk society. Harrison Ford stars as Rick Deckard as a Blade Runner for the LAPD, tasked with hunting rogue replicants, genetically engineered humans designed to tackle tasks that human beings cannot. When four replicants go rogue and begin killing humans, Deckard is forced out of retirement to hunt them down and stop them - but the truth isn't as simple as it seems. Deckard will have to reckon with the philosophical dilemma of what makes someone human.

is a film all about the replicants, asking questions about what it actually means to be human. According to Roy Batty, the replicants are all slaves, not only to the humans but to their own expiration dates. For a brief moment Roy Batty is able to give Deckard this sense of fear, allowing him to deliver this line, with it being one of the hardest-hitting moments in Blade Runner .

4 "I Will Have My Vengeance, In This Life Or The Next."

"My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the TRUE emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."

Maximus' speech in Gladiator is one of the most famous movie moments of all time, with him removing his helmet, explaining who he is, and stating that he will have vengeance for his murdered family. This is a quote that is known by people who have never even seen Gladiator , showing just how iconic it is. Not only is it one of the best lines in Gladiator , but it is also one of the best movie monologs of all time.

3 "In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream."

This quote is one of the most famous movie lines of all time, although it doesn't actually appear in the movie at all . Instead, it is the tagline for Ridley Scott's Alien , with the line making its way beyond the Alien franchise and becoming a commonly-quoted slogan. This quote perfectly summarizes Alien 's unique blend of horror and sci-fi, setting up the tone of Ridley Scott's horror masterpiece.

2 "Are You Not Entertained?"

In Gladiator , Maximus is able to take down a surprising number of opponents. In an attempt to call out the cruelty of the gladiatorial audience, Maximus yells out " Are you not entertained? ," asking the audience why they are truly there. This is easily Gladiator 's most famous quote , with it being a staple of the Gladiator franchise and one of the most well-known movie lines of all time.

This Historical Movie Sequel Would Be Better For Ridley Scott Than Gladiator 2

Russia-Ukraine latest: 'Great risk' of Ukraine collapse as Russia prepares 'big attack'

High-ranking Ukrainian officers have given a grim picture of the situation on the battlefield, saying there is a risk of frontlines collapsing wherever Russia chooses to launch an offensive. Read all the latest on the war - and submit a question on the conflict for our experts - below.

Wednesday 3 April 2024 14:22, UK

  • Oil price rises after Ukraine attacks major Russian refinery
  • NATO to consider €100bn aid package to 'Trump-proof' aid for Ukraine

Our comments box is open once again for you to submit a question on the Ukraine war for Sky News military analysts or correspondents.

We'll pick the best one to answer each week.

Moscow's relationship with NATO has returned to "Cold War settings", according to foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

The Western military alliance is marking its 75th anniversary this week.

Ms Zakharova said NATO has no place in the "multipolar world" that Russia says it is seeking to build to end US dominance, and argued its history was "full of aggressive adventures that brought wars and destruction to many nations".

She added its anniversary was no cause for celebration.

When Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine in 2022, he had said he wanted to prevent NATO from expanding eastwards towards Russia.

It appears the invasion has had the opposite effect, as it has brought Finland and Sweden into the alliance.

The US secretary of state's delegation was forced to drive from Paris to Brussels for today's meeting of NATO foreign ministers, a State Department spokesperson has said.

The change of plan happened after his plane had a mechanical issue.

Driving between Paris and Brussels takes roughly four hours.

On a previous trip to Europe in January, Mr Blinken was briefly stranded in the Swiss resort town of Davos due to an issue with his plane.

Former Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko has revealed he is planning to run for office again.

However, he made clear he will only do so once the war with Russia ends.

"If you ask me if I plan to participate in the next election, [then] yes," he told Al Jazeera.

"But first, for this election, we need to have a victory."

Ukraine was meant to hold its next presidential vote this year, but cannot do so while martial law - declared in response to the war - is in place.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in December last year he was willing to proceed with the election as scheduled but believed most Ukrainians think a vote would be "dangerous and meaningless" in wartime.

Mr Poroshenko was Ukrainian president between 2014 and 2019 but was ousted in an election against Mr Zelenskyy.

The bitter battle between the pair in 2019 saw Mr Zelenskyy win a landslide, with 73.22% of the vote.

Zara, Bershka and Pull&Bear have reopened some of their stores in Kyiv.

Long queues of people waited outside to enter this morning.

Inditex, which owns Zara and other brands, was earlier confirmed to be gradually resuming its operations in Ukraine.

Some 20 physical stores are expected to reopen in the Ukrainian capital.

Many foreign companies had suspended their operations in Ukraine after the war broke out in 2022.

The two countries have signed a 10-year agreement on security cooperation and long-term support.

Finland's President Alexander Stubb is currently in Ukraine, where he has been meeting Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The deal covers a range of topics including political support, backing for Ukraine's defence and security and support for Ukrainian reforms and reconstruction.

"The 10-year agreement is proof of Finland's long-term commitment to supporting Ukraine," Mr Stubb's office said.

Mr Stubb also told the Ukrainian president that Finland would send another package of defence materials with an estimated value of around €188m.

The Ukrainian spy agency is planning a third attack on the Kerch bridge connecting occupied Crimea with Russia, senior officials have reportedly said.

One official told The Guardian that Ukraine's HUR intelligence service is looking to disable the bridge in the first half of 2024.

They said Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the main directorate of intelligence, already had "most of the means to carry out this goal".

The plan has been approved by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, they said.

The bridge has been struck twice by Ukraine previously.

In October 2022, an explosion caused several spans of roadway to fall into the water.

Last July, an overnight raid by Ukrainian sea drones caused significant damage to the road section of the bridge.

Russia has been taking extensive measures to protect the bridge, which is key for transporting military supplies.

The price of oil has climbed following a Ukrainian drone strike on Russia's third-largest refinery.

The attack on the Taneco facility, in the province of Tatarstan, appears to have been Kyiv's deepest strike inside Russian territory since the invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago.

The strike on Tuesday started a fire which took around 20 minutes to extinguish. No major damage to the site or injuries were reported.

However, it was enough to trigger concern from investors, helping to push the cost of Brent crude above $89 (£71) a barrel on Wednesday morning - its highest level in six months.

A teenager who was working at the Crocus Concert Hall when it was stormed by gunmen last month has described how panic broke out at the venue.

Artem Donskov, 14, was working as a cloakroom attendant at the time.

He says he and his colleagues helped people escape via a service corridor and directed them to the exits after the attackers sprayed concertgoers with gunfire.

"As I understood it, some man yelled that the terrorists might be coming towards us and everyone was frightened," Artem said.

"At first, some people ran into a dead end, then they ran outside, dropping their mobile phones and bags, and tried to escape as fast as they could."

At least 144 people were killed in the attack on 22 March, which Islamic State claimed responsibility for.

Artem's mother, Alexandra Donskova, told Reuters news agency that he and the family were emotionally exhausted. She said he was a shy boy and she was concerned about his mental health.

"Of course I would like him to have at least one session with a psychologist, because I can't treat my own child. And I would like him to work through this situation," she said.

"He isn't agreeing to it at the moment, but maybe I will insist a little bit later."

As we've been reporting, NATO foreign ministers are meeting today in Brussels.

They will be discussing long-term support for Ukraine, including a proposal for a €100bn five-year fund.

Diplomats say the proposals by NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg would give the Western alliance a more direct role in coordinating the supply of arms, ammunition and equipment to Ukraine.

However, they say discussions on the proposal are at an early stage and a fund for €100bn "looks very optimistic".

It's not clear whether the figure will be accepted or how it will be financed.

Arriving at the meeting, Mr Stoltenberg said: "We need to shift the dynamics of our support.

"We must ensure reliable and predictable security assistance to Ukraine for the long haul, so that we rely less on voluntary contributions and more on NATO commitments. Less on short-term offers and more on multi-year pledges."

The plans would see NATO take over some of the coordination work from a US-led ad-hoc coalition known as the Ramstein group.

The move is at least partly designed to guard against any cut in US support if Donald Trump returns to the White House.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has highlighted the scale of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, revealing more than 3,000 guided aerial bombs were fired last month alone.

Russia also fired 600 drones and 400 missiles at the country, the Ukrainian president said.

Many of the guided air-dropped bombs have been used in frontline areas.

They are dropped from warplanes well inside Russian-controlled territory and glide towards their targets at high speed.

Moscow has used these to drop vast amounts of explosives onto Ukrainian entrenchments and buildings near the front.
