One of the lovely things about the Caribbean is that the temperatures remain consistent throughout the year; however, there are some other weather considerations that you will want to factor in when making your caribbean yachting vacation plans. Read More....

Vacations here are most popular between November and July.

If you are thinking of a megayacht, you will want to keep in mind that many of these private yachts which are Caribbean based in winter leave in the late spring and early summer months. They will return again in early winter; however, this does limit their availability. To charter a mega yacht, you will want to make sure that you do so well in advance.

Motor, sail, or catamaran yachts, on the other hand, often have selections available year round. Holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter do need to be planned for as early as possible as these are very popular charter times.

The availability for Caribbean charters can also be affected by the weather in other climates, for instance, when the severity of the weather is bad in the United States or Europe, especially between January and February, the charters are often booked. This is due to many clients looking for a break from the cold.

The Time of Year to Charter a Yacht in the Caribbean:

The main Caribbean sailing season runs from November through to July. The Caribbean primary high season is from mid-December to March, when the winter escapees from North America and Europe arrive in their greatest numbers. The hurricane season is from late July to early October, although hurricanes are in general rare in the southern Caribbean. Unfortunately, they can be prevalent around Cuba, Bahamas and the east coast of the U.S. every few years. This is the least expensive time for chartering in the Caribbean and there are some really good deals are available. However, as well as running the risk of storms, this time of year also tends to be associated with lighter (or non-existent) winds.

As with many boating locations the Caribbean shoulder season, in this case from April to July, is also a great time to charter a boat as there are less shore based visitors, some lovely settled sunny weather, and warm yet steady breeze. The Caribbean is made up of many different multi-nation (and multi-cultural) volcanic islands. There are amazing sailing grounds stretching from Cuba and Jamaica in the west, through the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands, The Leeward Islands and the Windward Islands, finishing with Trinidad and Tobago off the coast of Venezuela.

How to get to the Caribbean

There are direct flights from the UK and the US to Barbados, Jamaica, St Lucia and Antigua. Some Caribbean islands require a connecting flight as they have small airports which cannot handle large aeroplanes. Across the Caribbean, many islands have private jet facilities with fantastic runways.

What is the currency in the Caribbean?

Various currencies are used in the Caribbean. For instance, in Anguilla, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent, the Grenadines and Antigua, the East Caribbean dollar is the currency. Jamaica, Barbados, the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas have their very own currency. US dollars are accepted on most of the islands however the ATMs tend to have only the local currency.

Language spoken

There are four main languages spoken in the Caribbean, French, Spanish, Dutch and English. English is the first or second language and is mostly used when tourists visit. The official language of Haiti is Haitian Creole while Papiamento is used in Curacao, Bonaire and Aruba. Different creoles and local patois are also spoken on the various islands.

Time Zone in the Caribbean

Two time zones are used in the Caribbean. GMT -5 and GMT -4. Daylight saving time is implemented in many countries including Bermuda, Cuba, Haiti, the Bahamas including the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Visas and customs immigration

British and American tourists do not need visas if they are staying in the Caribbean for less than 90 days. It’s advisable to check the exact requirements for the countries you intend visiting. American tourists are still not allowed to visit Cuba although this may change in the future.

What to consider medical/health wise when chartering a superyacht in the Caribbean

There aren’t any extra medical issues for travelers in the Caribbean but check with your travel agent for any current warnings. The most common are complications form insect bites, jelly fish stings, cuts from coral and heart-related illnesses.

Even if you have neither a boat nor boating experience, it’s never been easier to make your nautical dreams come true — whether you want a day trip on your local lake or a fully staffed multiday voyage in a far-flung locale. Here are the initial questions that will help you plan an adventure on the water. Whom are you traveling with? Thinking about the size and dynamic of your group is an important first step, even if you are simply going on a day trip. Will children be on board? How old? What about elderly parents? Dan Lockyer, the chief commercial officer of Dream Yacht Worldwide , strongly encourages travelers to determine group size — and, ideally, get people committed — before booking. “The location that you want to go to, the time of year that you want to go, the type of boat that you want will entirely depend on the makeup of the group that you’re sailing with,” Mr. Lockyer said. Do you want to captain, or do you want a captain? Different charter companies specialize in certain locations, types of boats, itineraries and services. And if you’re looking for something smooth, for older people or with kids, a catamaran is great.” David Barclay is a luxury travel adviser who has also chartered boats for his own vacations. “You want to match what the travelers want to what the boat offers,” he said. Perhaps a group of friends might not mind a catamaran with functional but not luxurious marine bathrooms, but a multigenerational group might prefer more high-touch amenities. When should I book? Often, charter trips are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that require a great deal of advanced planning. “You may have a specific place you want to go, or a specific time of year you want to travel,” said Mr. Barclay. “And some places just aren’t good at certain times of year.” Naturally, you don’t want to be at sea in the Caribbean during hurricane season, or in the Mediterranean during winter storms. But you also might want to avoid peak cruising seasons, too. The first three weeks of August are quite popular, said Mr. Lockyer. “If you have some flexibility and can travel in early July, you’ll get the same sort of great weather, a greater selection of boats and the anchorages won’t be as crowded.” How much does it cost? Charter costs are incredibly variable, dependent on all of the factors coming into play: your boat type and size, your destination, your group size, the amount of crew you’d like and the amenities on board. That said, costs could range anywhere from $2,000 for a day on a sailboat to hundreds of thousands of dollars for a multiday mega-yacht charter. Have a budget in mind when beginning your research process. What if I didn’t plan far in advance? According to BOATPro , her final destination is Malta, an archipelago in the central Mediterranean.  The superyacht was last seen departing from the shipyard's facilities in Amsterdam (13 June). Built for a repeat Feadship owner who came to the project with "informed requests based on his long experience of yachting", Drizzle 's design is by Dutch studio Sinot and the owner's related design office. Characterised by chamfered exterior contours and a more traditional flared bow, the yacht has a modern-classic style with naval architecture by Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects . Notably, she is the first Feadship to carry full Hybrid Electric Class notation. Drizzle 's interior is designed to reflect an "understated family home" with natural materials and finishes throughout. Accommodation is found on the main deck, along with the large pool and open-air lounge shaded by the deckhead overhang. Meanwhile, the owner's suite, family lounge and wellness area are situated on the upper decks. Up top, the sundeck serves as an observation vantage point with a forward-facing sofa and sun loungers, while the aft deck is used for storing two rescue tenders. One of the owner's key requirements in building the yacht was to house a more spacious beach club in the stern, which occupies one-quarter of the total length of the lower deck. The large, fixed stern platform combines with two fold-down platforms to create 165 square metres of water-level lounging space. Sweeping staircases on either side of the stern platform lead to the main deck aft.  Between the engine room and the beach club is a side-loading garage with room for two 10-metre tenders, a ski boat and various water toys. Forward is the crew area, comprising the galley, crew mess and crew accommodation. Drizzle carries full Hybrid Electric Class notation, the power package comprising two main engines and shaft-driven fixed pitch propellers, coupled with electric motors of 560kW each and 1MW of Li-ion batteries. The e-motors work as shaft generators to produce electricity to serve the hotel load or recharge the battery bank, as well as for low-speed navigation while the generators or batteries generate the required electrical power. Civil War reenactment on the river will bring the boom of cannons Come July 19, the Muskingum River will come alive with a Civil War reenactment that sees guests of the Lorena Sternwheeler getting shot at from the river banks — and the boat firing back. “They won’t even let me know where the cannons are,” said Captain Bill Page of the specialty cruise that will see more than 50 reenactors and six or seven cannons along the shoreline conducting a Civil War battle. “It rattles the windows every time they fire.” The 2024 Lorena Sternwheeler Civil Reenactment and Encampment will take sail from Zane’s Landing Park at the west end of Market Street in downtown Zanesville Friday, July 19, on its Night Flight Cruise from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at $20 per ticket. You can also catch it Saturday, July 20, for $22.50 per ticket at 10 to 11:30 a.m., Noon to 1:30 p.m., 2 to 3:30 p.m., or 4 to 5:30 p.m. The Sternwheeler itself joins in the fun as well, loading up with a cannon on front and actors with Civil War era equipment and uniforms on the boat. “We have artillery people on the boat with rifles who fire back at them,” said Page, who earned his Captain license while in the U.S. Coast Guard and then as a yacht Captain in Florida running charters around the Caribbean. “It’s really a super fun time. We have entertainment on the boat, too. A guitar plyer and his wife—they do Civil War music.” They also have actors who represent Abe and Mary Lincoln. This year, the two will join during the 10 a.m. and noon rides. “When they join, they never come out of character,” said Page. “It’s like talking to Abe Lincoln himself.” Additionally, Civil War Historian Steve Ball will provide entertainment on the Saturday rides. Page said once the Lorena goes up the river and turns around at Riverside Park, there’s also an encampment there that folks can observe or later drive to and interact with. “They have campfires and all that going,” said Page. The Lorena Sternwheeler opens up for river rides in June and runs through October. “We do public rides, private charters, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, a couple weeks ago we had Mickey Mouse on there,” said Page, noting the public rides are about an hour long. “We try to do things for the kids. At the end of Episode 6 and beginning of Episode 7, the crew was dealing with a "scary" and "f-cking expensive" anchor issue that made their guests miss their flights. "The anchor shaft isn't working, so we're going to have to leave the anchor," Sandy explained in the episode. "We put the buoy on it and get the divers, and then we get it transported back to the marina. And then we install it there, because we need our anchor." Luckily, a team was able to retrieve the (important) piece of equipment. But while that issue is solved, we still don't know what will come of the current problem.
