Daniyal (Saif Ali Khan) and Nawaz (Katrina Kaif), the hapless secret agent heroes of Kabir Khan’s revenge thriller “Phantom,” could have used some pointers before being sent into the field.

For starters, Nawaz: If you see a suspect two rows behind you at a cricket match, you can tell Daniyal, but first remind him not to whip his head around to take a look. And if you’re collecting cigarette butts for evidence at the stadium, try to be a bit sly. Wiggling around on the ground between seats until a young fellow with a broom demands that you get up and out of the way may call undue attention to yourself.

And, oh yes, Daniyal: If you go to elaborate lengths to have yourself sent to prison in Chicago to eliminate a fellow inmate, have your handlers check to see if he’s about to be moved to another facility before you go to the trouble of excreting a battery (Did you swallow it? Well, points for that!) and executing the rest of your overly complicated kill setup.

“Phantom” starts with news footage of the November 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai. A voice-over tells us that the men responsible for their planning remain at large, sleeping peacefully beyond the grasp of India. Daniyal, the phantom of the title, is a disgraced Indian Army officer recruited to kill these men one by one in an extrajudicial way. After all, says a RAW agent (it stands for Research and Analysis Wing, India’s C.I.A.), if America can do it ...

The director Kabir Khan, who wrote the script with Parveez Shaikh, likes city-wrecking action sequences. After the opening documentary footage, we get a bang-up car chase, which moves us deep into movieland. Daniyal’s killings, full of pointless details and ginned-up obstacles, also reside squarely in this realm. (Nawaz is usually nearby swatting at problems.)

Mr. Khan, whose movies include “Ek Tha Tiger” and “New York,” is consistently drawn to the same themes: terrorism, Pakistani and Indian relations, what it means to be a Muslim in Indian culture. In “Phantom,” he amps up the rah-rah Indian nationalism, though it is specifically not Hindu nationalism. Nawaz is apparently a Parsi, and Daniyal, at least in name, is a Muslim. First and foremost, though, they are Indian patriots.

Opened on Friday

Phantom review: Kabir Khan’s thriller with Katrina Kaif, Saif Ali Khan has no crackle, only fizz

Phantom movie review: kabir khan's thriller, phantom, starring saif ali khan, katrina kaif is disappointing, there is no crackle, only fizz..

saif ali khan phantom movie

The last Bollywood outing to Pakistan, crafted by Kabir Khan, involved a naïve lover of Hanuman, who was a little thick between the ears but had a lot of heart. Parts of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ were cheerfully subversive, cheeky, and fresh and helped us sail through the film.

The director is back with another fairy-tale of an Indian conquering the world (read the war-torn areas of the Middle East which are basically used as conduits to where the film wants to get; yes, Pakistan again) and this time around there is, disappointingly, no crackle, only fizz.

saif ali khan phantom movie

Not only is the telling of ‘Phantom’ tepid, the story itself seems to have been cobbled together from the adventures of Messrs Bond and Bourne and and several other worthies on the same much-trodden beat. We keep waiting for Daniyal Khan, played by Saif Ali Khan , to rev up the proceedings as he and his pretty fellow-traveller Nawaz Mistry ( Katrina Kaif ) shoot and scoot through gun-and-cordite filled streets of Beirut and Syria via Chicago, London and Mumbai . In vain.

‘*S–*, let’s do this fast’, says Ms Kaif at one point. And we find ourselves in whole-hearted agreement. Because what’s a thriller for if it gives us time to breath? But the film feels sluggish as it goes about trying to paper over the jerky plot which seems to have been crafted by delusional hawks: those dastardly terrorists (actors playing David Headley and Haafiz err ‘Harris’ Saeed make an appearance) had killed hundreds of innocents in Mumbai, so lets just wade into that hostile neighbouring country, where nestle weapons-heavy Laskhar operatives, and blow ‘em into smithereens.

That’s what Daniyal, former Indian soldier out to regain lost honour, is set up for. And in the beginning there seems to be a faint hope that the Khans, director and star, will be able to pull off a rollicking let’s-see-the- global- hot-spots- while- we- hunt down the bad guys. But that is soon dissipated when our hero is joined by our heroine, who adopts an all-knowing smirk on the spot, and whose air-brushed-ness remains intact whether she is jumping into open jeeps or bobbing in the ocean .

Festive offer

From here on, it is hard to take ‘Phantom’ seriously. It is also hard to believe that a director who seemed to have cracked the flight-of-fancy-rooted-in-reality streak that all such films need to have (I enjoyed most of ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ in which the beauteous Kaif is used much better and Salman the Man kicks butt), will stuff his latest with characters who spout worn jingoistic dialogue. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub’s overtly blood-thirsty Indian intelligence agent being made to pump his fist at Daniyal’s killing games is both questionable and troubling.

And that leaves us with Saif, clearly floundering after his past few duds, including ‘Agent Vinod’, which had him traverse some of the same territory. Maybe he can still stave off our enemies and save us. But it’s not happening in this film. No siree.

Star Cast of Phantom: Saif Ali Khan, Katrina Kaif, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Sabyasachi Chakraberty

Phantom movie review: Saif-Katrina's tale of 26/11 Mumbai Attacks is a veritable phantom

Saif ali khan and katrina kaif's phantom sets out to avenge the 26/11 mumbai attacks, but ends up as something else..

Listen to Story

Katrina Kaif and Saif Ali Khan in a still from Phantom

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Katrina Kaif, Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub, Sabyasachi Chakraborty

Direction: Kabir Khan

Kabir Khan chose to call his latest film on Indo-Pakistan relationship Phantom. Phantom: As per Oxford Dictionary, a ghost / a figment of the imagination. In Khan's world, Phantom is a mission that doesn't exist. Much like his story, logic and a lot more in this so-called edge-of-the-seat thriller.

Starring Saif Ali Khan as the wronged Indian Army officer Daniyal Khan and Katrina Kaif as Nawaz Mistry, who has her fingers in a lot of pies, Phantom is a wishful tale. Based on S Hussain Zaidi's book Mumbai Avengers, this film deals with the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai Attacks, and how one person is unofficially employed to do away with the four masterminds of the attacks. It blends fact with fiction, and tries to put across a believable deal. So your David Headley Coleman and Sajid Mir are introduced in the film by their exact names. Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed becomes Hariz Saeed, and Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi is Sabauddin Umvi.

ALSO READ: From Dawood Ibrahim to Hafiz Saeed, know your terrorist, courtesy Bollywood

The germ is born in one mind inside the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) headquarters, with the chief Roy (Sabyasachi) snorting in disbelief first, and then giving in. Court-martialled Army officer Daniyal Khan is handpicked for the mission. Reason? No one knows him, no one has seen him, he's got no family to speak of. Father doesn't speak to Khan (and mother speaks about him to people she's not supposed to). On a mission as covert as this one, Daniyal asks Nawaz to take him out for coffee. To hell with sermons like no falling in love when on a government mission, etc. After all, when the person on the other end of the falling-in-love-with equation is someone as jaw-dropping-ly hot (help me with adjectives here) as Nawaz, denial is clearly not Daniyal's modus operandi.

The grander loopholes apart, what is baffling is that Katrina leaves her salon-styled hair open while battling bullets in the dust and rubble of the warzone that is Syria, and while in Pakistan, in perfectly peaceful surroundings, she ties her hair up in a pony. Why?

Zoned out? This is exactly the kind of buffoonery one ends up spending time on during the film. There are so many long-drawn pauses and sub-plots, and so many new faces introduced at the drop of a hat, that you can't help but steer yourself out of the maze that is Phantom. Kabir Khan's treatment of the story is at best passable. And contrary to who says what, the makers of Phantom bash Pakistan as hard as possible with their feet on Indian ground. The Pakistan government, not the people. So, the people of Pakistan are ready to help two unknown, never-seen, un-Pakistani nationals, and no one raises an eyebrow. Katrina's un-moving speeches help convince Umvi's doctor's nurse in being part of their highly-inflammable plan, and the latter is fine with it. Seriously? Not sure if humans are that gullible on that side of the border too.

ALSO READ: Why is Hafiz Saeed so threatened by Phantom?

On his part, Saif's performance is okayish. When in motion, he's convincing; when speaking, not quite. Katrina's gun-toting avatar is as smoking hot as her sea-diving one. As for her acting, not much has improved. Hearing her admonish Lashkar-e-Taiba for creating suicide bombers, with her accented ' jannat-jahannum ' in tow, is hilarious at best. Zeeshan Ayyub stands out among the supporting cast. Sabyasachi's seasoned skills come handy in nailing his RAW head act.

Parts of the film are tight and paced well. Some of the suspense is delivered properly; others, lost in transmission. Phantom begins fine, and then loses way so badly that by the end, you're just waiting for an extra helping of Afghan Jalebi. Among the songs, that's the one that stays on the mind long after the credits roll.

By the end of Phantom, one is left with a disarray of emotions within. Published By: AtMigration Published On: Aug 28, 2015 --- ENDS ---
