Maximo was the most brutal game of its generation, and it would fit so well in the modern landscape.
The PS2 was a good console to all of us. Thank the Gods that the bountiful blessings of that era are slowly being brought back a little at a time, with collections and remasters galore. Yet for all the meals I eat, my soul still hungers, and balefully calls just one word from its dark recesses. That word is Maximo.
Released for the PS2 in 2001, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory is set in Capcom's Ghosts 'n Goblins universe. In the spirit of the series, Maximo was a cutthroat, punishing 3D platformer in an era when kids knew that “Continues” were a privilege, rather than a right. If we went to bed knowing we had at least one life left on our save file, we were grateful. I am loath to live in a generation where games are being labeled “Souls-like” rather than the historically correct “Maximo-like.”

Maximo wasn’t just punishing in the way we think about Souls games, where we can lose experience and valuable time to unforgiving monsters. It was punishing in the way Diablo deletes your 60-hour save file in hardcore mode. The difference there, of course, was that Diablo let you choose your difficulty level. Maximo had one difficulty: Ultimate Hell Mode (which in the menu was simply labeled as “Start New Game”). Maximo’s first level tauntingly starts you out in a little gated safe zone that houses an item that will cost you 500 koins (for context, you could collect everything in the first level and end up with less than 250). This powerup, which would take you 20 minutes to grind for, could be completely lost upon even one death.
Like Ghosts 'n Goblins before it, Maximo’s difficulty isn’t just a selling point, it is the point. Whereas dying in Dark Souls is your fault and yours alone, dying in Maximo sometimes isn’t your fault at all. A clumsy camera, combined with our hero’s plodding movement and short move list, insists on making the game more sadistic than the monstrosities trying to kill you. Remember those narrow corridors in Demons' Souls where your weapons would bounce off the walls if you swung them too wide? They appeared here first. The only control you have in the brooding swing of your sword is the choice between a horizontal or vertical slash. Either choice is underpowered and will take a few swings to kill most enemies.
Walking on “unholy ground” has skeletons reaching for your warm body the way a BT climbs on you in Death Stranding. Skeletons and zombies spawn out of sight, while Ravens swoop down from above to steal your precious Koins. This is the only game you’ll ever play where Continues become more expensive each time you die.
If you can’t afford another Death Koin for the Grim Reaper, he stabs you with his scythe and deletes your save. There is no carry-over. You don't get to keep your progress, or any tools or items you've acquired. All you get to do is call your mother and sulk for thirty minutes while she ponders why you're wasting your time with this toxic relationship. When you've given up looking for answers, you can start a new game from scratch and hope you'll do better.

The US-based developer of Maximo, called “Capcom Digital Studios” (later renamed Production Studio 8), was tasked with making a game in the Capcom IP of their choosing. They landed on Ghosts 'n Goblins, but Capcom wouldn’t let them use the name (there are no official statements regarding this, but rumors are that a controlling executive team in Japan prevented them from using any of the names or likenesses.) That forced the team to make a sort of spiritual reboot of the series and take some creative liberties with their world and characters. So we have characters like Grim, the keeper of the underworld, who is a smart-mouthed sidekick with job insecurities. Or Maximo himself, a studly alpha with a single-minded desire to save his one true love, ignoring the advances of every other damsel in the world that throws herself at him.
The game sold just well enough to justify a sequel, but the second game couldn’t secure enough Koin to guarantee a third. Concept art and gameplay footage were leaked years later to show that a third game was at least being considered and worked on, but the American studio was closed before the dream would be realized. It’s a shame too, as the second game presented a symphony of improvements that transformed it into a completely different game. Maximo Vs. The Army of Zin was a reimagined concept that introduced faster combat, more forgiving platforming, and a more humane difficulty. It expanded the world, introduced characters and kingdoms, and established Maximo's reputation as a critical PS2 darling. It was a sequel in every sense of the word: bigger, bolder, grander.
Footage of the third game suggests a flintlock rifle, more mature themes, and a hub city that the adventure would revolve around. Instead the project was set aside to prioritize the creation of Final Fight: Streetwise, a 3D spinoff of the classic fighting game. Maximo would be re-released on the PS3 through the PlayStation Store, but tragically hasn't made it over to the PlayStation Plus Premium library on PS4 and PS5 (though I continue to hold out hope).
The PS2 was a fascinating, strange time in gaming. Japanese companies had a hard time understanding what American gamers were interested in, and Capcom was struggling to sell anything in the west that wasn’t Resident Evil or Street Fighter. As amazing as Maximo was, the first two games didn’t catch on like they should have.
Today, the world of gaming is very different. Long-dormant franchises are being revived all the time, but I'm baffled that we live in a world where we get a remaster of Kao the Kangaroo, but not Maximo.
Until I can get an announcement from Capcom, my sadness persists. I’ll sit in my bitterness forever; too stingey to buy a PS2 or PS3 to enjoy these games again, too honest to enjoy them through scummy emulation, too proud to move on with my life. Capcom, you’ve revived the worst of the Mega Man games, so how about revive the best platformer you ever made?

Maximo , a brave knight, thinking he’d found a trustworthy assistant in the likes of Achille , decided to leave his apprentice behind and go out into the wars that were fought. Achille turned out to be a villain, took control over Maximo's kingdom, and now the land is in trouble.
Upon returning to his throne room where Sophia and Achille are, he is killed by Achille's dark power. He is met by Grim, who explains that Achille has been using a drill to harvest the dead from the underworld to create his undead army. Grim then enters a contract with Maximo: he will be kept alive as long as he retains possession of the Death coin. The reason that Grim does this because, in his words, "if there are no more dead, (he is) out of a job." His four sorceresses of the council have been imprisoned, and Achille has spread them across the world, hiding them in four separate towers. To make matters even worse, Achille has taken Maximo’s love as a bride.

In 1999, Capcom introduced Maximo manga to video games, in an attempt to merge Ghosts 'n Goblins universe with Matshushita's work. The title was originally planned for Nintendo 64 but was delayed for several years and transferred for the PlayStation 2. Maximo was presented in E3 2001 and released in the end of the same year in Japan and in early 2002 in United States and Europe.
The concept was created by Capcom Digital Studio head David Siller who wanted to bring back "old school" game play. The game was produced by Mark Rogers and designed by David Siller, Bill Anderson and Scott Rogers. Jonathan Casco was the art director.
The artistic team placed special emphasis on the design and rendering of the characters, as well as putting a great deal of work into the environmental effects. The game's music, which varies from stage to stage, includes orchestrated remixes of the tracks found in Ghosts 'n Goblins and Ghouls 'n Ghosts composed by Tommy Tallarico.

Maximo takes place in a dynamic, fully 3D world. The character is controlled by the player can move freely space by running, jumping, crouching, and performing other various motions. Gameplay revolves around defeating large numbers of enemies, which can be accomplished by attacking with a sword and shield and combos and special moves. Like in the Ghosts 'n Goblins series, Maximo fights wearing armor. If he is hit, he will lose the armor and continue wearing his boxer shorts.
Affiliation With the Ghosts 'n Goblins Universe [ ]
While the two series share a similar art style, heart boxers, music, and apparently a universe; it is unknown precisely how the two series tie together. The Ghosts 'n Goblins and even Gargoyle's Quest games take place primarily in the Demon Realm, which is not mentioned at all in Maximo. It may relate somehow to the Underworld , where human souls exist in Maximo, though the undead is created through extracting such souls rather than bringing the demons that do exist as such in their realm. There are no characters in common, save for some similar enemy types such as zombies .
It is unknown if this takes before or after the Makaimura games, as they both take place in medieval settings with similar types of monarchy. Perhaps the fact that the characters names are loosely based on historical Greco-Roman figures (as opposed to mythical Medieval ones) hints that it takes place prior, assuming that they are influenced by real world chronology, however this is probably false if Arthur does indeed appear in the second game .
Reception [ ]
Maximo was well received, though criticized for being difficult and inaccessible. Saving is restricted to predetermined points and certain levels present obstacles that some have declared too challenging to overcome. The reviews were mixed, portraying the difficulty of the game. A sequel, Maximo vs. Army of Zin was released in 2003 with better critical reception. Ghost to Glory achieved PlayStation 2 Greatest Hits status in the United States selling more than 400000 units in North America.

Maximo: Ghosts to Glory is a spiritual successor of Capcom's Ghosts N' Goblins series. It was the first of three games produced by the now-defunct Capcom Studio 8 for the PlayStation 2 in 2002. As a successor to the Ghosts N' Goblins legacy, the game is an action platformer designed to challenge players with a high degree of difficulty. The game also features some other touches taken from Ghosts N' Goblins, such as the fact that the protagonist Maximo's armor can be destroyed, forcing him to run around in nothing but a pair of boxer shorts.
The basic plot of the game centers around Maximo, a knight who returns home to find his kingdom in ruins. Additionally, his girlfriend has been married to an evil scoundrel named Achille, and the four sorceresses that govern the land have been imprisoned.
Ghosts to Glory contains twenty very challenging levels. It includes a ''death coin'' system, which was put in place to discourage players from dying too often. If a player is to lose all of their lives, they must give the relatively rare death coins to the Grim Reaper to earn a continue. However, the number of death coins required increases at every meeting with him, and not having enough death coins forces the player to restart from the last save point. Moreover, saves can only be earned by either beating the world boss or by being purchased at a high price of 100 coins.

Video Game / Maximo: Ghosts to Glory
A Capcom Action-Adventure game with platforming and Hack and Slash elements, inspired by the infamous Ghosts 'n Goblins series.
The game begins with Maximo, a handsome and valiant knight returning home from war. He soon discovers that his beloved kingdom is in utter shambles, as his advisor, Achille, took over the kingdom while Maximo was away and forced Maximo's betrothed (Sophia) to marry him. Achille also got his hands on some very dangerous black magic and is now having a Giant Drill bore its way into the earth, causing some ill effects on the underworld—the souls of the dead are rising from the grave as either skeleton warriors or being absorbed by Collector Statues to be transferred to Achille.
Maximo, rightfully angry at Achille, tries to attack him, only to be killed by a devastating magical bolt, sending him falling through Limbo. However, the local Grim Reaper appears before him with a deal—Grim will not claim Maximo's soul if he agrees to go back to the living world and stop Achille's wicked goals . And so, with his trusty sword, armor and shield, Maximo will fight through a horde of undead to take back his kingdom...and Sophia.
This game provides examples of:
- 1-Up : Hearts. They can found hidden on the levels, perched on dangerous paths and, in the case of Frozen Wastes, for purchase.
- 100% Completion : There is a secret level named "Mastery" that requires you to get 100% completion to enter.
- Achilles' Heel : Each bosses can only be damaged if hit in a particular weakspot. Which spot varies from boss to boss.
- Agony of the Feet : Ghastly Gus, the first boss, can only be hurt by first stabbing his foot, then (once he starts jumping) the other foot. Once he falls over, you hit him in the head.
- An Ice Suit : Aurora Lee, the ice sorceress, wears a blue coat trimmed with white fur .
- Animesque : Programmed by western developers, character design drawn by veteran Japanese airbrush artist Susumu Matsushita.
- Artificial Brilliance : Captain Cadaver seems to be just another circular-arena projectile-flinger, but unlike most bosses, he actually calculates where you will be by the time the shot reaches you by measuring how fast you're running. Instead of running in circles like most games, you now must run away in strategic patterns.
- Back from the Dead : Maximo is brought back to life by Grim at the start of the game, and is likely to be revived by Grim many more times. The last sorceress Sephonie is killed by Achille before Maximo can rescue her, forcing him to go to the Realm of Spirits to bring her back.
- Barrier Change Boss : During his boss fight, Achille can summon circular barriers which can only be destroyed by hitting them with one move of your arsenal.
- Big Bad : Evil King Achille. Though he turns out to be a pawn to the true big bad, the Demon Queen.
- Big Boo's Haunt : The first world, a Creepy Cemetery .
- Black Knight : Few Black Knights (of Animated Armor variety) are featured as enemies in the final few levels. They come complete with a resonant intonation of "No man shall pass." To add to the Shout-Out , they even fall to pieces when they're defeated.
- Blessed with Suck : Achille does this in a You Have Failed Me to an anonymous general, restoring him to life, and then ordering his men to torture him to death.
- Blue Means Cold : The Frozen Wastes mostly uses a blue palette color, the ice sword power up is blue and Aurora Lee's dress is pale blue.
- Boss Arena Urgency : The penultimate boss, Lord Gutterscum, fights on a multi-layered arena composed of four circular rings of decreasing size, which he can destroy after a while: Maximo must finish him off before the last floor is destroyed.
- Chest Monster : Wizards and Mimics. Wizards invoke a Forced Transformation on you, Mimics just try to eat you.
- Clothing Damage : Well, armor damage as Maximo loses health, to the point where he's running around in his undies.
- Collision Damage : The Mask of Sorrow upgrades affects Maximo's golden armor upgrade, turning him into a skeletal knight wreathed in green flames and able to insta-kill all enemies he runs into.
- Cool Helmet : Maximo gets one on his third extra health bar. It looks even better when he powers up.
- Continuing is Painful : You lose all the temporary powerups upon dying, and relying on Death Coin continues has Grim demand more on every third time.
- Deal with the Devil : Grim's choice of words implies that the Demon Queen and Achille had some sort of deal going on, apparently the former supplied the latter with magic power and his death allowed her to take it back.
- Dem Bones : Most of the undead enemies you fight.
- Don't Fear the Reaper : Grim may enjoy the reaping part a bit too much, but it becomes rather clear that he does care about the souls he's been put in charge of.
- Dual Wielding : Pirate Skeletons wield two scimitars at once and can be deadly in both attack and defense.
- Elemental Powers : Found in the form of enchantment applied to Maximo's sword, each empowers his attacks, changes the aesthetics of the blade and allows him to launch an elemental-themed Sword Beam from the tip. The elements in question are fire, light, ice and darkness. He can also obtain shield power ups based on either wind or lightning.
- Eternal Engine : Most portions of the Realm of the Spirits have massive rotating gears, giant pendulum blades and plenty of traps of all types.
- Everybody Hates Hades : Averted. Maximo is cautious and suspicious of Death at first, but Death is a cheerful and pleasant - if morbid - fellow, who just wants to restore the balance of life and death.
- Evil Is Hammy : Achille, oh so much.
- Evil Laugh : Being a tyrannical evil overlord, Achille often indulges in this, especially when he sends Sophonie into the Realm of Spirits. "Sophia" endulges in one as well upon learning that Achille's dead and she can revert to her real form.
- Evil Overlord : As a King, Achille is one, summoning hordes of living dead and drilling into the netherworld for power and souls. He's even referred to as " Demon King Achille " in the original Japanese.
- Exposed to the Elements : In the ice stage, Maximo can still fight when reduced to his boxers. However, his idle animation in those stages show that he is freezing. Played straight with Mamba Marie and Sephonie in the cutscene at the snow stage, as both are in Stripperific bikinis and are barefoot.
- Fat Bastard : Achille, as well as some of the bosses such as Ghastly Gus and Lord Gutterscum.
- Flaming Sword : The Flametongue enchantment.
- Forced Transformation : Sometimes a wizard enemy will pop out of a chest and shoot magic bolts as Maximo. If Maximo is hit he'll either be transformed into a baby or an old man, unable to do anything until it wears off.
- Fur Bikini : One of the sorceresses wears a tiger striped bikini. Fittingly, she also wears the skull of a giant tiger which she killed herself as a hat.
- Game-Over Man : If you run out of continues, you still see the Grim Reaper . Unfortunately, instead of bringing you back to life like he does when you've got a Coin, he slashes you with his scythe while cackling maniacally ... Cue Fade to White .
- Ghost Pirate : Captain Cadaver, the third boss, is a towering ghost pirate armed with an anchor. His pegleg is solid, however, and acts as his weakness.
- Go for the Eye : In order to defeat the Demon Queen, you must strike her in her third eye before she can attack you.
- Goofy Print Underwear : By default, Maximo has heart-printed boxers (which you will see when his armor is destroyed), but he can buy other kinds of boxers, like cow-print or monogram.
- The Grim Reaper : Grim, who sends Maximo on his quest because, well, Grim is out of job if there's no more dead for him to handle.
- Ground Pound : One of Maximo's attacks, which is also required to activate checkpoints. He can obtain upgrades which enlarge the shockwave and add phantom blades to the pound. A few enemies such as the Zombie Yetis and Hammer Devils can perform such attacks.
- Guide Dang It! : While other bosses have blatants hints on how to damage them , there are no such hints for Captain Cadaver.
- Hailfire Peaks : The Frozen Wastes is a combination of Slippy-Slidey Ice World (ice and snow everywhere) and Gangplank Galleon (wooden pirate ships stuck in ice and their undead occupants ). The following Realm of Spirits is a mix of Planet Heck , Lethal Lava Land and Eternal Engine .
- Hub Level : Each world has one level which works as a hub world surrounding a massive structure which is the domain of that world's boss (like Lord Gutterscum's Iron Tower or Achille's Soul Drill), and from said Hub Level you can access the other levels and complete them to open the boss arena. Uniquely, all these levels must be reached by completing a starting level first and they do feature enemies and hidden treasures just like the other areas.
- Incredible Shrinking Man : The boss fight against Bokor Labas, a witch doctor who carries a voodoo doll of Maximo, has him casting spells to shrink Maximo and then try to stomp him.
- Idle Animation : Maximo has several wait animations—and some are world-specific (he'll shiver in ice levels and wipe his brow in lava levels).
- In the Hood : The first sorceress and guardian of the graveyard world wears a black tunic and a cape with a large hood, befitting her status.
- Inexplicable Treasure Chests : There are chests hidden everywhere, sometimes they're buried into the ground.
- Interchangeable Antimatter Keys : There are identical keys for both gates and chests.
- I Owe You My Life : Inverted. Maximo takes Grim's "I owe you one" speech to its logical conclusion and immediately enlists him as his partner to find the missing Sophia .
- Jungle Japes : The Great Dank, which is also sort of a swamp.
- Justified Extra Lives : Continues, in this case. Grim will return Maximo to life as long as he continues to work towards resolving the imbalance in the afterlife. This deal is bound by a physical coin Grim gives him, and if he runs out of these coins, Grim can no longer restore him to life and must reap his soul properly.
- Lethal Lava Land : The parts of The Realm of Spirits that isn't empty void has lava instead.
- Lightning Bruiser : The Demon Queen is very big, and also runs much faster than Maximo.
- Lighthouse Point : The Hub Level for the Frozen Wastes has a lighthouse in the middle of it, called the Dark House ('cause it's unlit, you see).
- Lightning Reveal : The room where the final boss is fought is pitch-black, and is only occasionally illuminated by the lightning strikes outside.
- Literal Ass-Kicking : How you deal with Lord Gutterscum.
- Magic Knight : Maximo when his sword is enchanted with an element (Fire/Ice/Holy/Arcane) and he can pick up abilities to allow him to shoot Magick Bolts or area attacks (like a meteor storm).
- Magic Staff : Achille carries an enchanted staff with an eerie green crystal on the top he uses to perform magic. During the boss fight it will eventually break, forcing him to turn the wrecked staff in a trident-like spear.
- Man-Eating Plant : They can be found in the Great Dank as enemies, while others can appear in the final level's garden areas.
- Market-Based Title : The game lost its subtitle when it was released in Europe.
- Ms. Fanservice : Sophia and all the Sorceress are beautiful women with large breasts and revealing outfits.
- Never Smile at a Crocodile : Undead crocodiles hide under the surface of green waters of the Great Dank, and snap at Maximo when he gets close.
- Night of the Living Mooks : Pretty much all the enemies you get to fight are undead of some kind, ranging from zombies, to skeletons, to undead beasts to ghosts.
- Not Completely Useless : Captain Cadaver is immune to all your attacks except for swinging your sword while crouching so you can hit his peg leg. This is one of the three times where crouching is useful. The others time occurs against bomb-throwing skeletons and Hammer Devils.
- Achille will use the souls to turn into a giant, during which you can't hurt him and his health recovers. The antennae sending him power need to be destroyed to revert him back to normal.
- Our Demons Are Different : They're encountered in the Realm of Spirits and come in two variety: goat-like devils with goat horns and the ability to charge at Maximo and diminutive, fat devils carrying oversized hammers.
- Pet the Dog : When Maximo finally defeats Achille and stops the Drill, Grim genuinely compliments him for his victory. He even asks him what's wrong upon seeing him sullen and honestly informs him that the Demon Queen was just a demon, which means Sophia's alive somewhere.
- Power-Up Magnet : The Midas Shield powerup attracts treasure from a distance.
- Precision-Guided Boomerang : Maximo's shield always returns to him (regardless of what it hits) and with the right upgrades can bounce between enemies and/or hover in mid-air.
- Rewarding Vandalism : Some coffins and caskets can be destroyed for coins.
- Save-Game Limits : Saving available at save points , 100 coins a pop.
- Save the Princess : Queen Sophia is the lady to be rescued.
- Scarf of Asskicking : Maximo wears a red scarf throughout his journey against undead menace.
- Self-Duplication : Bokor Labas, at a certain point during the boss battle, will create an handful of clones to keep Maximo distracted and run around the hut. Hitting the real one deals damage to the life bar.
- Sequel Hook : After killing the Demon Queen, Grim reveals that she was just a demon disguised as Sophia, not the real thing. Maximo then leaves with Grim to find her.
- Shamu Fu : The Great Dank has a variation of zombies which are covered in piranhas biting their flesh. They attack the player by shaking them off.
- Shovel Strike : Ghastly Gus, the first boss, is the keeper of the graveyard and uses a giant shovel to strike at Maximo.
- Smooch of Victory : Each time you rescue a sorceress, you can choose a "kiss" as your reward. It occupies a valuable slot in your powerup menu, but if you carry all four kisses to the end of the game, you unlock a concept art gallery .
- Spin Attack : One temporary upgrade lets you do this.
- Stripperific : Mamba Marie and Sephonie wear naught but what could be seen as bikinis. The other two sorceresses are more sensibly dressed.
- Throwing Your Shield Always Works : Maximo learns a shield-tossing skill that allows him to hit distant enemies. A successful hit chips away at the shield's durability, and if used too often, it will break.
- Trailers Always Spoil : Played with. The game goes out of its way to spoil the plot twist that Sophia's Achille's Decoy Damsel , even mentioning it in her manual bio... and naturally she's none of the above .
- The Undead : Most of your enemies are zombies and skeletons animated by Achille.
- Wham Shot : When Sophia let's off an evil laugh and transforms into her true form of the Demon Queen .
- Who Needs Their Whole Body? : There's a stronger variant of common zombie which becomes a crawling torso when hit enough times.
- World of Buxom : There are five main female characters, them being Sophia and the four Sorceresses: all of them are uniformly buxom and attractive.
- Would Hit a Girl : Achille backhands Sophia across the face in the opening cutscene, and rather hard enough to knock her to the floor at that.
- You Have Failed Me : Achille punishes a skeleton general of his for failing to kill Maximo by returning him into flesh and blood, and orders him to be tortured back to death.

Maximo: Ghosts to Glory is a 3D action game with an emphasis on combat. Maximo fights using his sword and shield, which can be upgraded and used in various combinations, inflicting damage on different types of enemies. His health is measured by the strength of his armor; once it is broken, Maximo will die from one hit. Coins can be collected and paid in order to ensure the possibility to continue playing the game following Maximo's death.

Don't be scared off by the daunting difficulty level - Maximo is worth every penny.
The Good The first level has one of the catchiest songs in video game history since Super Mario Brothers. Don't believe me? Load it up yourself. Maximo is a true game in every sense of the word. In Maximo, the game itself is the most important element. Basically, you play the sword and shield weilding Maximo, and your job is to save the princess and fend off hoardes of evil monsters on the way. If you've ever played Frogger, at no point did it represent itself as anything other than a brilliant game. Maximo, for all of its nifty graphics and humor, is a brilliant game. As you progress in Maximo, you will collect special powerups, such as the ability to perform a more powerful, but slower attack, or making your shield turn into a lightning rod/frisbee hybrid. Essentially, you will inherit a whole slew of cool things you can do with your sword and shield. The unbelievable thing about Maximo is that each and every one of these attacks has a very specific purpose. For every type of enemy there is to vanquish, there is a most effective way to achieve vanquishment, and that way is left to be discovered by the player. What I really appreciate about this game is not that it's particulary complicated (which it is), it's simple enough to be all about the players skill. There is so much more satisfaction in finishing something when you know it was your own skill, not how much experience your character had, that allowed you to overcome that final boss. Maximo has this: a sense of accomplishment. Everything you do right in Maximo is rewarded gracefully and pleasingly, everything you do wrong is punished gently, but sternly. The experience of the game was so much about how good you were at playing it, and so little about anything else (be it "cheap" monsters or AI or "overpowered" weapons), that at some points I couldn't help but smile at how great a job these guys did putting this game together. The Bad It's hard. Maximo is the game that drove your three year old cousin to throw a temper tantrum over the PlayStation 2, causing your parents to "take the system away". It's manageable, but younger gamers and light hearted fellows need not apply. The advantage of having a game that requires you to advance with it is that the difficulty level is pretty constant - as you improve, so do your enemies. The downside is that there isn't such thing as a break. Maximo doesn't allow players to stop and breath with an easier part of a level - it's all fire and brimstone in this world, and there's almost nothing you can do to ameliorate symptom. The Bottom Line Maximo has an addictive combat system that rewards precision and skill, but it may be a little too much for some gamers. While it certainly isn't a perfect game, had it been at an arcade, your quarters wouldn't go anywhere else for as long as you had enemies left to smite. Maximo has that classic feel, and I bet you'll love it too.

Maximo: Ghosts to Glory appears in the book 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die by General Editor Tony Mott.
As a promotional item for the game's release, free pairs of heart-patterned boxer shorts, the kind Maximo wears underneath all that armor, were given away prior to the game's release by certain retail outlets.
During the course of the game, you can buy different kinds of boxers (such as cow spots, heart prints, etc.) One of the kinds of boxers you can get is a "POW" boxer. POW was a power-up in classic Capcom games and can be seen in such games as 1942 , Exed Eyes , and Side Arms Hyper Dyne .

Death's a Bitch
Maximo is a heroic young adventurer of great fortitude, who spends his life prancing around the place dealing with indescribable peril. In other words, he's an upstanding citizen. But one day, he returns home to find his kingdom plunged into darkness, and his once-trusted advisor Achille the source of great evil and power, and the forced husband of his bride-to-be Sophia. Upon voicing his concerns, the evil Sorcerer kills him. Okay, that doesn't really amount to that much of a videogame, but Maximo is the sort of chap who doesn't take death lying down. Confronted by the Grim Reaper, he is offered the chance to once again seize the mortal coil, but only if he can deal with the threat of the kingdom's evil ruler once and for all. According to Death, Achille's actions include harvesting spirits and ruffling the feathers of the happily deceased. This is no good. Maximo had that one in his diary anyway, and lo, he is resurrected, born again and armed only with a sword, a shield and some fancy armour, he has to find the source of Achille's evil power (ooh, guess), destroy it and its master, rescue the kingom's four banished sorceresses and save his damsel in distress. Phew. Maximo begins his adventure with three lives and a Death Coin. Although Koins - the currency of the game - are scattered all over the levels, the Death Coin is far more important. In the event that Maximo runs out of lives before he completes his quest, he can use the Death Coin to charm the Reaper into resurrecting him again. The wily old Reaper's incentive in all of this is that a Death Coin consists of spirits, plucked from the battered tombstones of the kingdom, which Achille has been keeping from him.
Because spirits are being unfairly unearthed by Achille's power, Maximo has to collect them by locating suitable graves (which have white embers circling them), smashing them to pieces and collecting the spirits inside. Collect 50 and you can buy another Death Coin, but the price rises with each subsequent resurrection. The world that Maximo steps into is extremely Tim Burton-esque, with wafting mist, shrieking ghosts, lava pits, earthquakes, and ghouls and skeleton warriors rising from the ground to attack him. To defend himself, Maximo can employ his two main sword slashes; side-to-side and overhead (square and triangle) to parry blows and despatch enemies, and he can block attacks outright by clutching the R2 button. By twirling the left analogue stick as he attacks with the side-to-side slash, he can also perform a 360-degree attack, perfect for when the poor fella's outnumbered. Maximo can also evade enemies by jumping to higher platforms, and he can even double-jump ala Jak & Daxter by hitting the X button twice in succession. The most devastating move in his repertoire though is the downward strike. By doing a double jump and then hitting the triangle button as if to do an overhead slash, Maximo brings his sword crashing down into the ground, destroying anything from felled skeletons (who will get up again after a while unless obliterated) to vaulted graves, and generating a shockwave to take out enemies nearby.

Maximo's downward thrust also allows him to save. In a way. The game's save system is somewhat different to other games, but it's no less valid, and adds a level of tension to the game absent from many recent platform adventures. Maximo can save his progress through any level by performing a downward strike on a Holy Ground checkpoint, but these are only valid for as long as his lives remain (and saved in RAM to boot, or not to boot, heh). Outright death (even with a Death Coin to his name) results in a restart. In order to actually save his progress, Maximo has to find a Magic Pool, which allow him to save his progress at the cost of 100 Koins. Maximo : Ghosts to Glory consists of a number of Boss Towers (in each of which can be found an imprisoned sorceress), with about five levels to complete on the outside before Achille's resolve is suitably weakened that the drawbridge lowers and Maximo can perform his daring rescue. Once our hero has passed the first level of a particular hub, he is released into the ground of the Boss Tower, where Master Collectors (portals to each of the hub's levels) can be found as well as the odd secret and of course, Magic Pools. Maximo can also save after each boss encounter, when the rescued sorceress offers to save his progress, replenish his armour or give him a friendly kiss. We'd recommend the kiss though, because as the manual points out, if you finish the game with all four sorceress' kisses, you will win a special reward. Level design works on the basis of swapping in random elements of that hub's palette. So in the first of the game's hubs, Maximo has to contend with crypts, graveyards, busted bridges, lava pits (opened by the shifting earth) and fiery platforms. This gradually gives way to more diverse locations, but for some bizarre reason, even when the player is being shoehorned through an unnatural open-top-stone causeway, the game still feels appealing enough to continue. Even in the face of such tired antics as crumbling platforms and secret areas hidden by breakable rock.
As you can probably tell, Maximo is a very intricate adventure, and apart from everything I've mentioned so far players have the option to replay levels to improve their scores in the Level Completed, Game Completed and Game Mastery ratings. Although you can complete a level without mastering it (doing 100% of everything to be done), you cannot complete 100% of the game and reap the reward for doing so without first demonstrating your mastery. Players can also improve Maximo's arsenal of attacks by locating enchantments, which act like power-ups. Maximo is blessed with a number of 'power points', which can be spent on performing these enchanted attacks, which vary from the likes of Magic Bolt to Doomstrike. Up to three enchantments can be kept from level to level, although more can be collected during the course of one. Visually and aurally, Capcom has created the Nightmare Before Christmas of videogames, with its eerie-yet-cutesy atmosphere and simplistic narrative, and it works on a grand scale. It rarely takes itself too seriously either, with Maximo often stripped down to his polka-dot boxers by the loss of his armour. The texturing is nothing to write home about, and the game's vistas can barely hold a pinch of salt to those seen in Jak & Daxter, but the engaging gameplay and sheer number of things to do, collect and see within the game world mean that it seldom gets boring, although it is certainly one of the most difficult PS2 games witnessed in recent months. Another thing that I suppose I can't really leave you without mentioning is the camera. Unfortunately, you can't manipulate it yourself ala Jak & Daxter (will people just start copying this already? Please?), so you can either go to R1 / head-cam mode to look around and peer over and under things, or you can stop, hit L1 and have the camera centre behind you. Not being able to do this on the run is maddening.
Still, for once bombarding the player with repetition has worked for Capcom. It's a Saturday morning cartoon of a game with a grown-up skill setting. Although at times frustrating and ostensibly a bizarre hackandslash, it's eerily compelling and brainless enough to unwind with. At about 15 hours from start to stop, it's a reasonable length too. Well worth investigating, especially if you're a fan of the old skool.

- After fighting in a war, the young knight Maximo returns home to find his kingdom in shambles. Not only is the countryside filled with the undead, but the four wise Sorceresses have been imprisoned throughout the Kingdom; and to make matters worse, his girlfriend, Princess Sophia, has been forced to marry the scoundrel Achille. Now it's up to you to help Maximo rescue the Sorceresses, stop the marriage, and restore good to the kingdom. These tasks won't be easy, but you'll have Maximo's sword and shield and the power of the gods on your side.
== Monsters spawn out in their own unique way, usually popping out from the ground but occasionally come at you by being sent in via a casket or a plant. Although you can destroy these monster delivery vehicles easily in the first few stages, you'll find out that the monster caskets become more dangerous as you go on. Bone Soldier (undead) Fire - +100% dmg Light - +200% dmg Ice - freeze Dark - +200% dmg Skeleton that runs up and punches you. Majority of the monster type you'll encounter. Maximo can only be hit once, but if you guard both attacks, the shield is damaged twice. Best thing to do is to avoid it if you can, or overhead strike it and kill it with one hit. The harder ones (you'll know which ones) will teleport, much like Spinal from Killer Instinct, under the ground and come up behind Maximo. Bone soldiers are vulnerable when they reappear from the ground, or if they are still immobile in their monster caskets. On later levels, they tend to swarm so provoke them only a few at a time. Any magic sword works well and don't hold back, or you will wind up taking a lot of damage. Bone Axe (undead) Fire - +100% dmg Light - +200% dmg Ice - freeze Dark - +200% dmg Skeleton that doesn't move but wields an axe. You'll notice it quickly since it'll begin to throw its axe out much like Maximo does his shield. This monster is easy on large open levels but they are placed in spots where it can knock you off into lethal terrain (killing you) or where it can hit you at least once before you get to it to kill it. The best thing is to approach from one side, have the monster throw its axe at you, jump over and quick or overhead strike the monster before the axe can return to hit you. The axe disappears if you successfully kill the monster. Bone Shield (undead) Fire - +100% dmg Light - +200% dmg Ice - freeze Dark - +200% dmg Skeleton armed with a sword and shield. Other monster you'll meet constantly. Like the Bone Soldier, it comes in three colors and flavors. The hardest ones can "skele-port" but Bone Shields also guard against Maximo's quick strikes and overhead strikes quite effectively. If you have Maximo guard, the Bone Shield attacks. This repeats until your shield durability goes to zero. Spin strikes work only against the weakest of Bone Shields, but prove ineffective at stopping the tougher ones. The best thing to do is to knock one down with an overhead strike and then finish it off with a down strike. Bone Elite (undead) Fire - +100% dmg Light - +200% dmg Ice - freeze Dark - +200% dmg Skeleton with a full suit of armor and a poleaxe. Patrols in a small area but pursues if it sees you. Quick strikes and down strikes are ineffective against this monster. Even overhead strikes are of limited effectiveness, requiring two overheads to finish the job. The first overhead knocks off the helmet. The second should kill. Down strikes will do the task of the first overhead strike, but not the second. Even magic bolts cannot kill this guy (unless it is an Armageddon wave). The only magic swords to cleave this sucker without a problem is the Armageddon or the Firebrand. With a normal sword, Mighty Blow works, or you can hop over the monster and attack it from behind while it is swinging its poleaxe. Bone Bomber (undead) Fire - +100% dmg Light - +200% dmg Ice - freeze Dark - +200% dmg Skeleton that throws bombs. Behaves like the Bone Axe, but almost mandates that Maximo get wounded if it dies. The only way to beat this monster without suffering any wounds is to execute a crouching quick strike so that it stops throwing bombs. After you stop the Bone Bomber, retreat to a safe distance and wait for it to die, then clean up. Do not try to destroy the bombs it tosses and be attentive to the "smoke" timer on the bomb and be ready to get out of the way when the timer reaches one. Also remember that like the Bone Axe, this monster can only throw out one of its shots at a time. So it has its bomb a tickin' and it leaves itself open for some killin'. Bone Pirate (n/a) Fire - special Light - special Ice - freeze Dark - special This monster is exceptional on the annoyance meter. This is because it is a fast, mobile, and common monster that cannot be defeated anyway except by a down strike. Plus it has the ability to do about ten damage to a shield with one of its attacks. It basically is a skeleton that looks like a pirate and even sounds like one, albeit a dorky one. It is nearly invincible to take on from the front. The only way beat one is to knock one down, preferably from behind so that the sword it has sticking through its body points to the ground. Once it is prone, Maximo can down strike it and that's that. Down striking a Bone Pirate when it is face up is a no-no, because although you'll kill the little ess-oh-bee, the sword in its body will strike Maximo for one damage. Jumping over it as it charges will cause it to be confused. Overhead strike it from the back, then down strike and finish it off. Use the Icebrand to freeze this monster and shatter it in little pieces so even the King's men can't put it back together. Zombie (undead) Fire - +100% dmg Light - +200% dmg Ice - freeze Dark - +200% dmg Walking corpse that lunges at you. Attacks with two punches like the Bone Soldier but is tougher in that it will not fall with one quick strike. Use the overhead strike or Mighty Blow to down this sucker with one hit. Tougher zombies will lose their legs when struck and come at Maximo again by crawling on the ground. You'll then need to deliver crouching quick strikes to finish the job. Be ready to deliver two overhead strikes to zombies as you progress into the game. Conversely, down strikes work on all forms of zombies. One zombie variant found only in swamps has carnivorous fish on its body and it will fling them on you if you watch try to kill Maximo. Moral of story: shoot first, question later. The KGB does it, and so should you. Raven (living) Fire - one hit death Light - one hit death Ice - one hit death Dark - one hit death Quoth the raven, "Gimme your money punk!!" Ravens do no damage, only steal money instead. In a way, they're another kind of ghost. They swoop down quite fast and they make no noise, the primary concern. Be alert for their squawks that alert you to their otherwise silent presence. Ghost (apparition) Fire - one hit death Light - one hit death Ice - one hit death Dark - one hit death White gaseous monster that appears only if Maximo carries one (1) or more spirits. It deals no damage, only stealing your spirits. Either quick strike it as it nears, or you can spin strike for more satisfying results. Either way will do, since it dies with one hit. Since this monster makes no sound until it is almost upon Maximo, you will need to remember where this monster appears, and keep a lookout for its tell-tale appearance: a whitish cloud of smoke signals its presence when you have spirits to be taken. Poltergeist (apparition) Fire - one hit death Light - one hit death Ice - one hit death Dark - one hit death Green gaseous monster that appears similar to the Ghost but shows up all the time. Instead of stealing spirits, it will take possession of Maximo for five seconds. Prevent this by killing it before it touches Maximo or remaining invincible (having the Mask of Sorrow active is best). The tell-tale sign is the green smoke it erupts from (like a ghost). Once a poltregeist touches Maximo, it never reappears again (until you replay the stage) and makes attaining mastery a little more difficult if you miss striking it. Stone / Crystal Statue (n/a) Fire - one hit death Light - one hit death Ice - one hit death Dark - one hit death Stationary "monster" that rises from the ground and is fairly crappy, although it will damage you as it's erupting. It doesn't cost any charges to destroy this enemy, plus you can use it as a barricade against mobile monsters. Destroy these enemies after you deal with more lethal threats. Mimic (special) Fire - normal Light - normal Ice - freeze Dark - +200% dmg Looks like any regular chest, but will attack you when you try to open it. Best defense against it is to remember what chests you opened and to avoid inspecting them when you restart at a checkpoint. Rogue Wizard (special) Fire - one hit death Light - one hit death Ice - one hit death Dark - one hit death Weak monster, but most likely it will age Maximo either into a baby or an old man before you know it. These two forms of Maximo cannot attack. Behaves like the Bone Axe or Bone Bomber, the Rogue Wizard also has the element of surprise since it looks like any other regular treasure chest. It usually lies in wait with other enemies and attacks when you are distracted. Because it always appears in the same area, a Rogue Wizard can be dealth with by memorisation or by becoming invincible and getting near it until you can spill its brains on the pavement. Killing this monster without getting struck by its magic bolts will net you a 1-up. Being transformed once will net you a gem. If the monster hits you enough times with its magic bolts, you will only gain a coin for your efforts. If you down strike monsters too often, you will risk summoning a rogue wizard to the next normal chest you get close to. Monster Plant (living) Fire - +100% dmg Light - normal Ice - freeze Dark - +200% dmg Plants behave like they do in Resident Evil, spitting spores that explode or do other nasty effects, like make mini-me's of the plant that try to get on Maximo's leg. Best defence is good offence. Overhead strike or spin strike them until you decapitate the plant. Fight them one on one for best results. If you get close be prepared to be hit if you are slow to strike because the monster plant will use its vines to beach-slap you. Moral of tale: on the plains of hesistation are those who waited, and waiting died. If you are going to shoot, shoot. Don't dwaddle. Crocodile (undead) Fire - +100% dmg Light - normal Ice - normal Dark - +200% dmg Crocodiles are tough monsters and have the property of surprise as well. They only appear in swamp, and then only in water. The only tell-tale presence of a croc are the bubbles that float from the water, as if Maximo had too much chili and went for a swim. When the croc attacks, it does savage damage before it disappears and tries again. Down strikes and quick strikes do not work well but overhead strikes do. In fact, overhead strikes are the way to go in most cases. Hit croc on the snout three times with an overhead, it will go belly up and probably belch out an item. Ice Plant (ice) Fire - +200% dmg Light - normal Ice - resistant Dark - +200% dmg Stationary enemy that makes ice cubes around itself. Touch the ice cubes and Maximo freezes solid for five (5) seconds, making him vulnerable to attack. Down strikes work against this monster and you should appraoch with caution since other enemies nearby tend to take advantage of your helplessness. Frozen Zombie (ice) Fire - +200% dmg Light - normal Ice - resistant Dark - +200% dmg Looks like a zombie sailor with a pointed stick encased in ice. Now I'm going to tell you 'ow to defend yourself against an assailant armed with a pointed stick. Right -- first off, normal quick strikes do not damage the monster since the ice acts like armor. Overhead strikes will work since that attack will hit the monster's head. Down strikes theoretically work, but don't so don't try. Note that the Firebrand will work normally against this enemy, as will the Armageddon. The Icebrand works at well, but it will behave like a normal sword against a Frozen Zombie. The weapon's Shabon Spray will instantly destroy a Frozen Zombie (it's already frozen) so keep that in mind. Yeti (ice) Fire - +200% dmg Light - normal Ice - resistant Dark - +200% dmg Large, ugly, superbly annoying. Quite like a pokemon, but angrier and you derive extreme satisfaction from killing one and displaying its carcass at the British Museum of Natural History while smoking cigars and dumping ash on its taxidermed hide. Yes, you will hate this monster because I told you so. It has a large amount of HTKs, so when you can, use a Firebrand or Armageddon (doubtful) and kill it in one stroke. Steel swords require more than one overhead strike and fighting it with the Icebrand is pretty much attacking a tank with a toothpick. Be sure to avoid the linear avalanche it launches Maximo's way since it is unblockable. When you need to fight multiple yeti, you are in for a world of pain. Hammer Demon (demon) Fire - resistant Light - +200% dmg Ice - freeze Dark - +200% dmg By the time you reach the Spirit Realm / Nether Realm / Noob Saibot, you should be ready for anything. This little fiends walk softly and carry a bog hammer that behaves like a Ring of Pain. Crouching quick strike to hit these monsters and if you see them stagger, be ready to double jump to avoid the shockwave attack. Overhead strikes do not work since the hammer acts as a shield; the only time you can attack them from above is when they throw their hammer back right before they attack. Goat Demon (demon) Fire - resistant Light - +200% dmg Ice - freeze Dark - +200% dmg Humanoid goat monster. Stomps its hooves and charges at Maximo. If you want, you can block and strike back when the monster hits your shield. Or you can double jump straight up, down strike to stun the monster, then go in for the kill with an overhead strike. Up close, it can still attack you by doing shortened versions of its ram attack. Wraith (apparition) Fire - resistant Light - normal Ice - normal Dark - +200% dmg The Spirit Realm's "ghost" is much more malign. It doesn't want spirits; it doesn't want control of Maximo; it just wants to pick him up, take him out in the middle of nowhere and shoot him. But since firearms haven't been invented, Wraiths just drop Maximo over the closest bottomless pit. All about the same, insta-death. Wraiths do no damage -- if Maximo is held by one, hit the square button repeatedly to free up Maximo, not minutes. Prisoner (living) Fire - normal Light - normal Ice - normal Dark - +200% dmg The prisoner is insane and bays like a dog, eats like a dog, and humps your leg like a dog. It does no damage but will restrain Maximo while other monsters attack him. Unlike the Wraith's grip, you must hit cross button to escape this hold. Any attack works well against this monster. Black Knight (unknown) Fire - special Light - special Ice - special Dark - special The Black Knight is a unique enemy requiring a special attack sequence to destroy. Two down strikes will detach the head from the armor. When this is done, hit the floating helmet with any attack and the head will re-attach itself to the body. Repeat and it will die. Magic swords have no bonus or penalty on this enemy, and it requires a charge to hit the helmet. If you have the Ring of Pain and Wider Shockwave, the phantom blades of the ring will have the same effect (do three down strikes instead of two) and you'll be able to kill the Black Knight without expending valuable magic sword charges.==
