JARED MARTIN

Captain/chief officer , client of 60-90m yachts.

It’s been two over years of working with the Saltwater Recruitment team and we have been very happy with the level of professionalism and attention we receive when looking for a candidate to join us. 99% of the candidates that Saltwater have presented to us have been a perfect match for us, and when we had a candidate that did not work out, we were given an automatic replacement immediately, no questions asked. This is the kind of service we expect in the industry and Saltwater can supply this.

CHIEF OFFICER , 90M+

It has been a pleasure working with Saltwater. For every potential candidate they send, it is accompanied by a very useful paragraph that not only summarises the their CV, but includes information on reference checks, why they are suitable and any other points of note. Written references are verified verbally too. Saltwater is very proactive with their search for the right candidates.

STEPHANIE DURKAN

Chief stew/purser , various motor yachts.

Saltwater is a top agency for all levels of recruitment needs. I have worked with Saltwater on both sides of recruitment - to find crew to join my team and also over the years to find the best jobs which match my needs. The team are so personable, experienced and professional from start to finish of any recruitment process. I highly recommend.

How to get a job on a Superyacht

The best jobs are the ones that don’t feel like work….

When the Pandemic hit, the world changed. Millions were forced inside, and for many time, which used to be a luxury, was suddenly in abundance. We all had time to think about our lives and what was important; for many, it was time to make a change. At Flying Fish, we saw a lot of interest from customers who wanted to know how to get a job on a Superyacht.

The Pandemic supercharged the Superyacht industry, too, with many high-net-worth individuals deciding that life was too short and it was time to build a new yacht. Over 1,000 new boats were ordered or were in build in 2022, with a new yacht being launched every month.

In short, there has never been a better time to get a job on a Superyacht.

how to get a job on a Superyacht

What are you looking for?

For the purpose of this article, we will assume that you are new to the Superyacht Industry and are wondering how you land your first job.

There are many roles onboard a Superyacht. Almost all people entering the yachting industry for the first time look at one of two roles; Deckhand or Steward/Stewardess. Which role you choose will depend on your interests, background, and skills.

Becoming a deckhand

Superyacht Deckhand

The primary role of a Deckhand is to clean and maintain the yacht’s exterior, tenders, and toys. In addition to your key duties, you may be given any number of other roles; for example, you will assist with the berthing and unberthing of the yacht. You may be asked to go into town to purchase some supplies or carry the owner’s or guest’s luggage from the private jet! It is fair to say that the role of a Deckhand is different from any normal job, and there is never a dull moment.

Superyacht Steward or Stewardesss

The role of a Steward/ Stewardess is similar to that of a Deckhand. Your primary role is the meticulous cleaning of the interior of the yacht. You may be changing bedding one day and then serving drinks on the beach the next. Similar to a Deckhand, no two days are the same.

The three main areas to consider are:

  • Are you medically fit to go to sea
  • You will need to get qualified.
  • Work ethic.

Let’s dive into the detail

All Superyacht crew must hold an ENG1 medical certificate to go to sea. The ENG1 medical certificate is used to determine the overall fitness and health of individuals who work in the maritime industry. It is typically conducted by a qualified medical practitioner approved by the relevant maritime authority, not your GP.

Get Qualified

As well as the ENG1 medical, to work as Deckhand, Steward, or Stewardess, you must hold the relevant qualification. Mandatory qualifications include STCW Basic Safety Training; additionally, Powerboat Level Two , and Proficiency in Designated Security Duties would be expected on a CV.

working on super yachts nz

The essential qualifications listed above are the minimum required. If you want to stand out above the rest, we recommend looking at additional training to improve your CV. Our Superyacht Deckhand Course and a Superyacht Stewardess Course, include these additional skills.

The qualifications are the easy bit, the biggest factor, by far, to be successful in the Superyacht industry is you!

In a normal job, you would finish your day’s work, then hop in the car or a bus and go home. If you had a tough day, you could relax at home and share your day with friends or family. On a Superyacht, at the end of a long day, you end up in the crew mess with your colleagues. You have dinner together, chat about your day, and share a cabin with another crew member.

Looking at it from the Captain’s perspective, when it comes to employing crew, he/she is looking for a crew who can do the role to a high standard and has a nice personality. Common interests, somebody the Captain and crew would want to spend time with, are also key factors.

If you were employing somebody to work in your house full-time, somebody you would have dinner with each night and be in your home 24/7, what qualities would you look for?

Getting a job on a Superyacht requires a friendly personality, someone who is easy to get along with, has a great work ethic, can think outside the box, is hard-working, and has additional skills they can offer the yacht.

Additional Skills

You don’t have to have been to sea to work on a Superyacht. However, any sailing experience or time with family or friends on the water will help. Deckhands with Watersports Instructor qualifications, PADI Dive Master or Instructor, Carpenter, and Engineering skills are handy skills for the CV. Don’t forget that all crew are required to hold the ENG1 Medical Certificate and STCW Basic Safety Training , as a minimum.

As a Steward or Stewardess, any hospitality, beauty, massage, or yoga experience will look great on the CV. Some yacht owners have young children, so if you have been a Nanny or looked after, children can also help.

Having a good yachting CV is a key factor in getting a job on a Superyacht. Such the importance Flying Fish has a dedicated Career support service as part of our Superyacht Deck or Steward/ess programmes. The career service also includes industry guidance, our industry event in Antibes, plus lots more.

When are the yachting seasons?

The Mediterranean season starts between March and May, and the winter season in the Caribbean/US is between October and May. Some yachts are on world cruises. We see a demand for training from December to March as people gear up for the Mediterranean season. Our next busy period is between August and September, ready for the winter.

How long does it take to find a job on a yacht?

From our experience, it takes, on average, about one to five weeks to land that dream job. However, this all depends on a couple of factors, how hungry and determined you are and the number of available jobs. We have had hundreds of customers train with Flying Fish, and it’s fair to say that most find a job on a Superyacht.

Take the time to browse for jobs online, including social media sites like Facebook and YotSpot. Sign up to dedicated yacht crew recruitment agencies , such as YPI Crew, Quay Crew. There are a few online job platforms, like Yacht Jobs and YotSpot .

If you have contacts in the yachting industry, they can help you find that dream job as they will have inside knowledge and can recommend you for a job on a Superyacht.

1. Have Realistic Expectations

  • The superyacht industry is highly competitive and in order to qualify for employment a financial investment is required (training & travel)
  • For applicants without relevant experience, being physically present at or near Superyachting hubs when searching for employment is important
  • Obtaining the correct qualifications does not guarantee employment and training is not refunded
  • Your passport and ability to obtain Visas have an impact on your employability
  • Having contacts, experience, and the correct attitude is an advantage
  • Working in the industry comes with some amazing benefits but like any career path, there are also disadvantages
  • Being an extremely "hard worker" is not an advantage, it is expected
  • The quality of work and attention to detail needs to be of a very high standard
  • You need to be well-mannered, professional, and well-suited to living in close proximity to other crew
  • Presentation matters
  • Getting advice from multiple sources including crew who work in the industry is advised
  • Different yachts, owners, crew, and itineraries = different experiences

2. Choose the Yacht Crew Department you Wish to Work in

Before joining the yachting industry, it is essential to decide on your career path. The work environment and duties associated with each superyacht department vary greatly. It is therefore advised that you understand the training, duties and requirements associated with each role. The most common roles for crew entering the industry are:

Super yacht stewardess serving guests at training school

Steward / Stewardess

A superyacht stewardess is responsible for the guest service, housekeeping and laundry. In some cases, the position is combined with an additional role for those who come from a beauty or healthcare background.

Super Yacht Deckhand

Superyacht Deckhand

A deckhand is responsible for the cleanliness and upkeep of the yacht's exterior. Wash downs, line handling, tender driving, watersports and bridge lookout duties are common tasks for deck crew.

Chef food

Superyacht Chef

Working as a superyacht chef comes with some unique challenges. Although the skills are certainly transferable, there is specific training and certification required. It can be a tough but extremely rewarding job.

Superyacht Engineer

Working on a yacht or superyacht as an engineer can be a rewarding career path. Although a background in engineering or mechanics is an advantage, it is not a prerequisite. The duties associated with the role are diverse, exciting and require a great deal of hard work.

3. Complete All Mandatory Superyacht Training Courses

Having the correct training and certifications is essential to your employability in the superyacht industry. In order to become a crew member, you will need to have completed the following training:

  • STCW 2010 Basic training
  • Proficiency in Designated Security Awareness or Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
  • Department-specific training for your desired role. (I.e. stewardess, deckhand, engineer, chef, and officer courses)

4. Obtain an ENG1 or ENG1 Equivalent Seafarer Medical Certificate

Image showing a doctor performing ENG1 medical inspection to inform candidate.

ENG1 Medical Certificate (or ENG1 Equivalent)

Superyacht work can be physically demanding. Ensuring that crew are physically well and able to work at sea is a crucial aspect of the crew and guest safety.

In order to work on a superyacht, you will have to hold an ENG1 Medical Certificate. Because the certification is set by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), the examination must be performed by an MCA-approved doctor. The examination is done in order to identify any medical conditions that may prevent you from safely performing your work duties at sea.

5. Choose a Location to Join a  Superyacht

When looking for your first job it is essential to be in the right place at the right time. There are a lot of factors to take into consideration when selecting your location, however the two most popular areas for working on a superyacht are:

6. Obtain the Correct Visas & Documentation for the Relevant Superyacht Hub

It is essential to obtain the correct visa for the country you plan to work in. It is important to understand the types of visas that exist as well as the local laws with regard to job seeking.

7. Create a Superyacht Crew CV

Yacht Crew CV Example

A professional and well-structured superyacht CV will help differentiate you from other job seekers looking to enter the industry.

Superyacht crew resumes have a different structure to normal CVs. If your CV is not laid out appropriately, your chances of being considered for a position are slim.

Examples and more information on how to create a great CV can be found on the links below.

8. Find Superyacht Job Vacancies

Finding the right job in the superyacht industry takes time and commitment. Using credible resources is key:

- The My Crew Kit Superyacht Job Board - Crew Agencies - Social Media Pages - Dockwalking - Networking

Crew Agencies

Crew Agencies play an intermediary role between yachts and crew. There are numerous agencies scattered around the main yachting hubs. Registering is a simple process and can be done online, many agencies will then request a short interview in person.

Find out more about Crew Agencies

Social Media Pages:

Online job boards and social media pages are extremely useful ways to apply for jobs as well as to find day work. It is important to only apply to jobs if you meet the criteria (have the correct experience and qualifications).

Be wary of which jobs you apply to. We recommend you only apply for jobs from closed social media groups with active moderators. Fake job posts do occur at times. Make sure you do not meet with or send personal information to suspicious accounts.

Find Appropriate Social Media Pages

Dockwalking:

Dockwalking is the process whereby you walk the docks with the aim of getting day work or even landing a permanent job. It is a gruelling task as there are often long distances between docks and it requires hours on foot. It also involves a lot of rejection as many boats are fully crewed and not looking for employees.

Find out more about dock walking.

Networking:

Your introduction to the world of yachting. The industry is growing exponentially; every year more boats are built, and more crew join the industry. It remains however, a close-knit community that feels a lot smaller than it is. ‘Everybody knows everybody’ and finding a job through a friend or a friend of a friend is often the best way to go. Crew like to work with people they get along with. They are therefore much more likely to hire someone from their extended network of friends than to look elsewhere (provided experience and qualification requirements are met).

A Few Suggestions:

  • Network at every opportunity you get.
  • Socialise with people you meet at training courses.
  • Attend dock parties and BBQs.
  • Socialise with the people in your crew house and visit other crew houses.
  • Join yacht groups on social media.
  • Hang out in the ‘yachty’ bars and restaurants.
  • The more people you know in the industry the better off you will be.

“I think the reason that Quay Crew is (in my opinion and most of my colleagues’ opinions too) the industry’s leading agent is down to the culture of integrity, honesty and real care that permeates your company, and the careful selection of a candidate that will stay in the job. Long may it continue. I will never hesitate to use, recommend or assist Quay Crew for as long as I’m in yachting, and after.”

“Having moved into the yachting industry from the commercial sector, Sam gave me valuable feedback on my CV and routes into the industry. I can highly recommend Sam to anyone looking for their next engineering position as she does her best to make sure that the yacht is right for you.”

2nd Engineer – 52m Yacht

“Having been in contact with Caroline since the summer, I felt the whole way through my search application process that she was completely on my side and has supported me and given me the confidence to propel my career to the next level.”

Chief Stew – 60m Yacht

“I would just like to take this opportunity to express how amazing Max has been in finding myself and my partner a position on a brand-new build. Max has been such a rock star in not just finding me one job but two jobs, which I am absolutely grateful for. It’s really nice to have a crew agency like Quay Crew who are reliable, trustworthy as well as always wanting to consider your best interests. The team at Quay Crew are absolutely exceptional and I will always recommend only the best for them. ”

Captain – 30m+ Yacht

“The best crew agent I have ever dealt with…always on the ball, super efficient, attentive and always available. There are so many agencies that only care about the yachts because they are the ones paying and completely ignore the crew so I want to thank you for all your help. ”

Head of Service – 100m Yacht

“I really appreciate the communication and commitment from Quay Crew and would like to mention that Tom has been incredible throughout the process. He had a vast amount of information relating to the role and yacht and knew exactly what would suit me. I highly recommend Quay Crew.”

Bosun – 60m+ Yacht

“Quay Crew was the most professional of the agencies I was using in my search. I had constant communication throughout and the whole process was personal. I’m very happy with the placement and would recommend Glen and the team to anyone. ”

2nd Officer – 65m Yacht

“What sets the team apart more than anyone else is the open and honest dialogue as well as the feeling that we’re working towards the same goal. Rather than just being another number or CV on someone’s desk, I established an amazing rapport with Glen so that he was able to really know what my goals were and where I wanted to take my career…and he was absolutely instrumental in seeing that I achieved that by placing me on my current vessel. At some point in the future, I plan to be on the opposite side of the interview process and Quay Crew will be the first agency that I reach out to.”

2nd Officer – 80m Yacht

“I wanted to say how fantastic Tom has been in finding a job for me. From first talking to him on the phone, he gave some fantastic advice about the industry and made the whole process feel calm and easy. His communication was absolutely exemplary and he went above and beyond to secure me a job. I would highly recommend Quay Crew to anyone.”

Deckhand – 90m Yacht

“I recently completed a 4 week trip through Quay crew on a yacht that Phil placed me on. I had applied for the role through other agencies but they refused [to put me forward] and Phil was the only recruiter that I spoke to who also saw flexibility in the job requirements. It’s a pleasure dealing with a recruiter that actually understands the role and the candidates suited for it. I hope to work with Phil and the Quay crew team again in the future.”

Courtney* worked for two very wealthy men as a crew member on their superyachts. One was a millionaire sex fiend who flaunted his riches and barked at his staff. The other was a hard-working billionaire who would change the course of her life.

“I remember going in,” says Courtney of entering the exquisite main-bedroom suite aboard her millionaire boss’ super yacht.

The night before, the crew had been alerted to a late-night delivery of 10 large boxes to be brought straight to his room where he was waiting with his girlfriend – his wife and children elsewhere in the world.

Asked if he needed assistance opening them all, he replied with a gruff "no" and slammed the door on Courtney, who was running into overtime on her usual 14-hour shift that day.

“We were used to him being rude, because we’re the help. You know, we are a different class. I believe they think that we are.”

The next morning, it was Courtney’s job to tidy the boss’s room – a daily task as soon as he or any of his guests left their suites. But on this particular day, she prepared herself for more than fluffing his giant bed, cleaning his toilet and wiping down the gold and marble of his bathroom after he’d showered.

"It started in this beautiful seating area that you walk into first," recalls Courtney. "There were a few boxes ripped open in there. I was like, okay. I just wanted to walk it through and sort of absorb what I was going to have to do before I started tackling it."

Moving through to his bedroom, Courtney discovered the rest of the boxes and their contents.

"They'd all been ripped open - it was like a kid had just ripped them open with their teeth. I've never seen so many dildos, so many butt plugs, so many sex toys in my whole life."

She turned to see a giant screen still streaming porn. She found sticky, stale-liquor-lined glasses on the sills of the suite's bullet-proof windows.

"Dildos had been dropped all over the floor. When I went into his bathroom it was like he'd just showered like a bird in a bath. There were towels everywhere, and toothpaste."

Courtney stood, incredulous. Then she began to laugh. "You've worked so many hours. You're busting your a***, and then you have this."

It wasn't the only incident that Courtney, a Kiwi girl who wanted to see the world by working on superyachts, encountered on her first of two big boats.

"One day, we had to change the sheets seven times."

"I don't know if they realise what they do," reflects Courtney of her five years working for the uber-rich across the Caribbean and Mediterranean. "Because they're so used to doing it and having people clean up after them. That's the weirdest thing to me. Like, your shower's never wet. Your toilet's never dirty. If anybody used anything, you'd have to reset it completely ... No one ever tells them no."

A man who had inherited his wealth and sported the title of a millionaire, Courtney describes her first superyacht boss as "an adult baby".

He was showy: "He liked to be seen pulling in to the Grand Prix. He liked the boat to be docked a lot. He liked to have his cars out the front. Walking in and on with his girls, the way he dressed was blazers, dress shirts, nice pants, Loro Piana shoes. He loved to wear silk kimonos around on the boat. But then he had his Yeezys, and he wore ripped, distressed, baggy kind of Kanye-style. Pretty much anything he saw that was fashionable, he would buy," she says, noting his wardrobe on board would have been one of several he had in homes all around the world.

But for four months of the year he could be found on his yacht rotating out "his boys - who'd drink and yell and eat avocado and have it all squished down their top, just like big babies - his family, and his girlfriend".

Often, that last guest was the biggest challenge for the crew.

"Sometimes these girlfriends, they want to be the main squeeze. They want to let the wife know that they exist. So sometimes they might hide panties down the couch or take photos on an iPad that you might not think to clear. And then the wife comes along ...

“Once the girlfriend left, and if he got off the boat too, we’d do a full flip. You’d literally take all the cushions up, all the iPads, all the scales, you would wipe everything, head to toe, make sure all the hair was gone. One long hair strand would just not be okay. You’d change all the products - because you would display toiletries out for any guests. So sometimes Madame would want different toiletries to the girlfriends so you’d have to make sure that it’s all swapped and put exactly back to where Madame had it originally.”

Courtney and the crew went as far as taking photos of everything to "make sure it was all correct."

"Madame preferred different sheets. You'd have to change the sheet set so when she comes back on, she's none the wiser. You'd have to hide all their sex toys, 'cause she'd be curious as to why there'd be so many."

And all of this was done in arguably the most impractical of attire: a silk top and white skorts.

"When all nine guest suites were in use, you were physically running and sweating and dripping and the clothes they wanted you to wear, sometimes they're just so impractical because they want you to look pretty - just in case you get called. [We wore] these little white skorts – which are pretty standard in yachting - that fly up and expose everything because, let's be real, you're bending over half the time. It's just, it's not so fun," she recalls of working for her adult-baby boss, who barked at the crew and wouldn't look female staff in the eye.

As she finished up on her first boat, Courtney says she felt hesitant about moving to her second, even though when she’d first arrived in the South of France she’d caught a glimpse of it - one of the biggest in the world - leaving a private dock and thought to herself, “I’m going to get on that boat.”

"After my first boat, I was a bit apprehensive of giving my time to these people that don't deserve my energy. If they're going to treat me in such a poor manner, I don't need the money enough to be treated like that," she says, adding that while it might be perceived as a well-paid job, the long hours mean that's not really the case. However, it does provide a chance to save well because your food and accommodation is covered.

But as she stepped on board the superyacht she'd eyed up when she first arrived in Europe, Courtney had no idea how encountering its owner would impact her life.

Her new boss, a "very powerful" billionaire, "renewed my faith in rich people, I guess you could say. I learned about how good things are happening in the world that these rich people are doing, which was actually nice. Because I'd thought, s***, all these people are just using their own money for their own good."

When it came to working for her new boss, Courtney says he was "an absolute pleasure to look after, after working with those sorts of men who just exploited."

"He was respectful. He was private. He didn't need to show off so much.

"He worked for his money, pushed for it every day. He knew what it was like to not come from a lot of money. I think that's why he was quite respectful of his things.

"He had a lot of butlers so, generally, before we would walk into his cabin, a butler would have picked up the main stuff so we didn't have to do it - it kept his privacy.

"He was the loveliest person to clean up after. He had a bed - I swear to God - that was like two king size beds put together. We used to have races, it took two girls 21 minutes to change the sheets and everything. But he slept almost in the coffin position."

Unlike the bacchanalian behaviour of the guests on Courtney's first boat, the billionaire's visitors aboard were "more business associates, lawyers, his right-hand man. I don't know if he had too many friends," she says. "I think once you get so close to the flame, you get sucked in and you end up working for him. I think his money bought him complete loneliness. Everyone that I've spoken to, all my girlfriends [working on superyachts} agree, all the bosses are lonely."

When it came to his dealings with the crew, Courtney says he showed genuine compassion.

"If he saw you were stressed or worried about anything, you could generally tell him."

And he could be extremely generous. So much so that, for Courtney, it changed her life.

Having returned to New Zealand earlier this year, she reveals to the Herald that she doesn't need to work for some time and will be able to set herself up in a way she'd previously only dreamed of.

"I was one of those lucky girls that my boss took a liking to. He had a type, I guess.

"He gave me a lot of money and gifts. I can now, potentially, buy a home without a partner. I can live independently, as a single woman. I'll still have a mortgage but there's no way I would have saved that huge of a deposit without him.

"I'd never be in this position. Had it not been for him or, technically, had it not been for the sacrifices I made to get to this position.

"I've paid my rent upfront for a year. Everything I own is all paid in cash, outright. It's just, it's a really nice place to be."

While Courtney is no longer in contact with her former boss she wishes she could see him again to thank him.

"I just want us to go back and tell him, face to face, 'You've changed my life'."

*Courtney’s name has been changed to protect her privacy.
