Yachtmaster 2 on a 7 inch wrist

My wrist size is just over 7 inches. I love the look of the SS YM 2 but have never put one on and I'm wondering if the 44 mm case might be too big. Does anyone own a YM 2 with an average sized wrist or have any thoughts about it? My 40 mm sub seems like the perfect size. I know the sub case is much bulkier so I was wondering how the YM 2 would wear in comparison.  

If you have a boat to race with it, it'll be fine! If you don't have a boat to race with it, it'll be terrible! ⛵⛵⛵  

I have always loved the look of the YM2, just not enough to actually buy one (yet). The white dial really pops, I think they look sharp. I guess I am waiting for them to become unobtainably expensive, and then I can be sad I didn't buy one when they were reasonably priced. Realistically, without a date, the YM2 is not suited to be a daily work-week wearer. So for me it would slot in as a casual weekend wearer. I think a YM2 would be a good 4th or 5th Rolex to have in a collection, to pull out occasionally, to serve the same purpose in a collection as a Hulk or one of the new colorful dial OP's. For some variety once someone already has a black Sub (or Sea-Dweller), a DateJust (or Day-Date), and a GMT (or Sky-Dweller).

There is big news, and there is Rolex big news, and in some ways, ne'er the twain shall meet. At Baselworld this year, Rolex debuted a first for the company: the very first, ever, Rolex delivered on a rubber strap. Now, for most companies this would have little effect on watch enthusiasts other than to evoke (very) tepid interest at best, and boredom at worst – but this is not an ordinary rubber strap, this is an official, designed-and-tested-and-thoroughly-obsessed-over-by-Rolex rubber strap. And thereby hangs a tale.

The Yachtmaster, as we have mentioned in some of our previous coverage , occupies a somewhat particular place in Rolex’s lineup of sports watches; it shares water-resistance and a turning bezel with the Submariner (the latter is water resistant to 300 m while the Yachtmaster standard model is water resistant to 100 m). It is certainly not a tool watch; the Yachtmaster is offered in either platinum and steel, or gold and steel (that’s Rolesium and Rolesor, lest we forget) and is either quietly or unequivocally luxurious depending on what size and metal you go for (Rolex makes the Yachtmaster in both 35 mm and 40 mm sizes). 

The Yachtmaster’s history goes back to the first introduction of the watch in 1992, although the name, interestingly enough, appears on the dial of a prototype Yachtmaster Chronograph from the late 1960s (a watch so legendary I am actually forced to use the word; one of three known is in the collection of Mr. John Goldberger; we covered it – and a host of other remarkable ultra-rare watches from his collection – in a very memorable episode of Talking Watches ).

The term “Yachtmaster” is also, incidentally, used for a certificate of competency in yachting which is issued by the Royal Yachting Association, although we’re unaware of any specific association between the RYA and the Yachtmaster watch.

Now, this newest version of the Yachtmaster does take a few pages from the existing Yachtmaster playbook: 100-meter water resistance, a bidirectional turning bezel, and a dial and hands that echo the Submariner. There are also a couple of features that may make vintage Sub enthusiasts wonder if Rolex mightn’t have an exceedingly subtle sense of humor; the gilt coronet and “Rolex,” and the red lettering, both features which according to HODINKEE founder Ben Clymer would have, had they appeared on a Rolex dive watch, made it instantly the single most popular watch in the modern Rolex inventory. The case is rose gold – Rolex famously makes their own, called Everose, in their own foundry, with a bit of platinum mixed in to prevent discoloration – and the bezel, rather than being some other precious metal (as is the case in the “standard” Yachtmasters) is in black Cerachrom – a very technical-looking matte black that contrasts sharply with the gold case. Somehow, between the rose gold, the Cerachrom bezel, and the new Oysterflex bracelet this manages to be the most luxurious and at the same time most technical Yachtmaster yet (leaving aside the Yachtmaster II, which we recently reviewed right here , but that is a watch that marches to the beat of a different drummer entirely).

The two different versions of the Everose Yachtmaster (40 mm and 37 mm) sport different movements; the larger uses the caliber 3135 and the smaller, the newer 2236, which sports the “Syloxi” silicon balance spring (first used by Rolex in 2014).

The Oysterflex bracelet is, in a nutshell, quite a piece of work. One of the most endearing traits of Rolex as a company is that it tends to demonstrate what we can only describe as a laudable degree of corporate obsessive-compulsive disorder when it comes to research and development, and it does so, often, without making any sort of fanfare about it at all. In this case we do know a little bit about the Oysterflex, however – it is basically designed to have the hypoallergenic and comfort properties of a rubber strap and the durability and shape-retention properties of a bracelet. 

At the core of the Oysterflex bracelet are metal inserts made of titanium and nickel, which are used to affix the bracelet to the clasp and watch case; over those is a sheathing of “high-performance black elastomer.” “Elastomer” is a portmanteau word, formed from “elastic” and “polymer” and is a general term for natural and synthetic rubbers. In addition to the materials complexity of the Oysterflex bracelet, it is also shaped in a rather unusual fashion – there are ridges molded into the the wristward face of the bracelet, which are intended to allow the bracelet when worn to better approximate the natural curvature of the wrist.

They might look a bit odd but in practice, the design works out quite wonderfully; this is easily the most downright comfortable and organic-feeling rubber strap I have ever worn, and like the entire watch manages to be both extremely technical in feel, and very luxurious at the same time; I doubt whether any company has ever taken so much trouble over the design of a strap (for all that Rolex prefers the term “bracelet” in describing the Oysterflex, habit dies hard and you’ll probably find yourself calling it a strap, just as we did). On the wrist, the two stabilizing ridges do exactly what they are supposed to: keep the watch from shifting, as heavier watches on rubber straps are wont to do, without requiring you to have the strap uncomfortably tight. The Everose Oysterlock clasp does a superb job mechanically and also looks fabulous into the bargain; the quality of finish on the clasp and case may not seem terribly elaborate at first, but it is as technically flawless as anything I have ever seen at any price, on any watch.

What we have here, in other words, is a very Rolex interpretation of luxury. Yes, this is a gold watch, and a gold Rolex, and wearing a gold Rolex always carries with it, shall we say, certain semiotic complexities. However there is also another side to the watch, and to the Rolex approach to luxury in general: the taking of such pains to produce technical perfection that technical perfection becomes a luxury in itself.

Almost Obscure: The Rolex Yacht-Master II 116689

Rolex does not simply release watches on a whim. New models are rare, and updates to existing models are often minor, sometimes not even warranting an announcement. Regardless of timing or subtlety, everything The Crown does is met with scrutiny and drama. So, too, it was when the Yacht-Master II was released in 2007. The watch was met with mixed reactions: With an obscure complication that no one really asked for and the largest case in Rolex’s catalog, some thought it sullied the robust elegance of its forebear. Others rightfully praised its technical innovations. Fast forward more than a decade and the model seems to have won out: the Rolex Yacht-Master II 116689 seen here (and its sister references) remains in the Rolex catalog and is a favorite among those seeking a Rolex with a bit more panache and functionality than the standard Submariner.

When the original Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992, it was Rolex’s first entirely new model since the Sea-Dweller in 1967. The watch was an immediate hit with the seagoing elite, and has remained incredibly popular, with a variety of colorways and sizes released to satisfy demand.  Then, in 2007, the Yacht-Master II was released. Rolex spent over 35,000 hours designing the movement for the watch, which was designed to aid skippers in tracking the starting sequence of a regatta, including a novel integrated bezel and programmable countdown timer with memory function. Two models were part of the original release: the 116688 in solid 18kt gold with a blue ceramic bezel and the 116689 in 18kt white gold with an embossed platinum bezel.  

Design Details

At 44mm wide and 14mm thick, the Yacht-Master II features the largest production case Rolex offers. Despite its size, the watch is good to just 100m of water resistance—certainly sufficient for most aquatic adventures, but a subtle hint that Yacht-Master II is aimed at those who plan to remain aboard. The solid 18k white gold case and bracelet of the 116689 remain classic Rolex: polished throughout, with gentle curves, it gives way to the dual-finished Oyster bracelet, which features an Oysterlock clasp and Easylink 5mm extension for fine-tuned sizing. The patented Triplock crown and its guards maintain the aesthetic, with ringed chronograph pushers at its flanks. A white gold bezel—dubbed the Ring Command bezel for its added functionality—features a frosted platinum insert with embossed, polished numerals and model name. Protecting the dial is a sapphire crystal. 

Despite the watch’s functionality, Rolex has kept things extremely legible with a clean white dial. Square hour markers are applied and filled with the brand’s proprietary Chromalight lume. At 9 o’clock, the Crown logo is accompanied by the traditional Rolex dial text. At 6 o’clock, a running seconds subdial features a radial finished ring. The hands are all blued, with the hour and minute featuring lume; the minute hand has a cutout to allow for better timing legibility. In a large arc bounded by bright blue, the 10-minute regatta scale lines up perfectly with both the applied markers and the bezel. The countdown time is displayed by a bright red chronograph sweep hand and a lumed triangle minute hand.

To set the countdown timer, turn the Ring Command bezel 90 degrees counterclockwise, press the 4 o’clock pusher, and use the crown to set the desired interval (the triangle hand will snap back to 0 if pushed past 10). After rotating the bezel back, the watch’s pushers operate similarly to a normal chronograph. But Rolex has added two unique functions. When the timer is set, the initial countdown time is memorized: if the countdown is 7 minutes and needs to be restarted, stopping and resetting the timer will return it to 7 minutes. Equally impressive, the watch can be resynchronized to the official race countdown if necessary: pressing the reset pusher without stopping the timer will jump the timing hand to the nearest minute. 

Inner Workings

Powering the Rolex Yacht-Master II is the automatic Rolex 4161 caliber, based on the 4130 chronograph movement (seen in the Daytona). Comprising over 360 components, including 44 jewels, the movement beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a robust 72 hours of power (a number of the constituent parts are so small, they require specialized micromanufacturing mastered in-house by Rolex). The watch is further equipped with Rolex’s Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock system, together delivering exceptional antimagnetism and shock resistance. As with all modern Rolex movements, the 4161 is certified to their Superlative Chronometer standards, accurate to -2/+2 seconds per day. 

Instead of the traditional chronograph functions of its base movement, the 4161 has been retooled to allow for use as a countdown timer. In conjunction with a vertical clutch, a column wheel extends through the main plate, allowing for the programmable countdown. Additional reworking has added instantaneous re-synchronization functionality and countdown memory; and as discussed above, the bezel is coupled to the movement to allow its use as a locking mechanism for the timer (though considering the bezel part of the movement might be a stretch). All of these decidedly niche features make for one of the most complicated Rolex calibers ever made. 

Versus the Competition

Watches and regattas have been linked for quite some time, and indeed many brands sponsor teams, races, or entire series. Omega and TAG Heuer have both released limited edition America’s Cup watches featuring countdown mechanisms. Panerai makes the Luminor 1950 Regatta Chrono Flyback and Ulysse Nardin has its Marine Regatta model. Of course, sometimes only a Rolex will do, in which case one can opt for the timing function of the Daytona, the Ring Command bezel of the Sky-Dweller, or the nouveau riche appeal of the original Yacht-Master. 

Personality

While the original Yacht-Master appealed to the owners of superyachts by providing a higher-end alternative to the Submariner, the Rolex Yacht-Master II 116689 builds on that appeal with the added bona fides of regatta timing functionalities. In the white gold execution, it’s perhaps best suited to the sailing enthusiast with who enjoys the occasional regatta and may even partake in one from time to time, but also likes a splash of luxury on the wrist and isn’t afraid to let others know.  

Final Thoughts

Be it as it may an undeniable piece of luxury sailing kit, the Yacht-Master II does what only a few Rolexes do: provides both the exceptional quality the brand is known for and unique functionality. For that alone, the model is well worth a look.

Even though the Yachtmaster collection is one of the newest additions to the Rolex lineup, there has been a great amount of innovation over the years. History of the Rolex Yacht-Master

While we wouldn’t be introduced to the very first Yacht-Master until 1992, Rolex’s history with sailing actually dates back to 1958, the year the Swiss watchmaker partnered with the prestigious New York Yacht Club. By then, Rolex had already garnered a reputation for making great waterproof watches with the invention of their Rolex Oyster case back in 1926. So, the partnership was actually quite a natural next step.

Rolex solidified its relationship with the world of sailing in 1966 when Francis Chichester — one of history’s most exceptional navigators — became the first person to sail around the globe on his yacht, the Gipsy Moth IV, with a Rolex on his wrist. His voyage, which spanned from August 1966 to May 1967, took him 29,600 miles around the world. however, the most impressive part is that he only had a few tools to help him navigate his way, including nautical charts, a sextant, and a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The Rolex wristwatch chronometer he used was a reliable and steady partner, helping him keep time amidst rough conditions for 226 days at sea.

Despite the brand’s massive success in creating watches that were great for sailing, Rolex continued to hold back its efforts to create a watch specifically for this category. The brand did briefly dabble with the idea in the 1960’s, releasing a prototype dial for the Cosmograph chronograph with the name “Yacht Master” on it, but the idea never took hold. Today, only two known examples of this prototype Daytona Yacht-Master are known to exist — one belonging to Eric Clapton (whose model sold for $125,100 at auction in 2003) and one owned by legendary Rolex collector John Goldberger.

In 1992, we were finally introduced to the modern Yacht Master we know and love today. Its official name, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master, was the brand’s first ultra-luxury sports watch built for the open seas. To make sure that collectors understood the luxury aspect of this new watch, the very first 40mm model was forged entirely out of solid 18k yellow gold and featured a matching gold bi-directional rotating bezel (marked to 60 minutes for timing) alongside a gold Oyster bracelet. Over the next few decades, Rolex has expanded the collection using a variety of materials as well as adding new sizes to the luxury nautical watch collection.

15 years after the first release of the Yachtmaster, Rolex introduced the regatta chronograph Yacht-Master II specifically made for sportsmen to use while regatta racing. To cater specifically to these athletes, Rolex outfitted the watch with important features like a programmable countdown timer (to measure with reliability how much time until the start of the race) and both flyback and fly-forward functionality (for easy synchronization should the race committee have to restart the race sequence). Another key difference is that the Rolex Yacht-Master II is only available in one size, 44mm with an Oyster case and bracelet. However, there are a variety of alloys available.

How Much is a Rolex Yacht-Master?

Because there is such a wide variety of sizes and materials used across the Rolex Yacht-Master collection, the prices tend to vary significantly. For example, you can pick up some of the older or smaller Rolex Yacht-Master models for around $5,000 on the second-hand market. However, newer, larger Yacht-Master models, especially those forged out of precious metals, can sell for well into five-figures.

How much is a Yacht Master II?

Due to its large size, complicated movement, and frequent use of precious metals, the Yacht-Master II is one of the higher-priced Rolex watches you can purchase. In terms of pre-owned prices, a stainless steel reference of the Yacht-Master II starts around $15,000. This may seem steep, considering that this Yacht-Master II is stainless steel and doesn’t feature any diamonds or gems. However, the complexity of the movement is what really makes this watch shine and it is the primary factor behind its high price tag. On the higher end, the yellow gold ref. 116688 costs $43,550 retail and can be bought for around $28,000 on the pre-owned market.

Buying Pre-Owned vs New Yacht-Master Watches

The key difference between buying a pre-owned Rolex Yacht-Master or Yacht-Master II versus a new one is the price. For a retail Rolex model , you will surely pay a premium – especially if you choose one of the precious metal models. On the secondary market, you can get a Yacht-Master for a much lower price, and many collectors find this option a better value for their investment. However, this is still totally dependent on the specifics about the watch which you can get an idea of in the chart above. The price of a pre-owned Yacht-Master will always vary depending on factors like its alloy, the year it was produced, condition, and whether it is a luxury-oriented Yacht-Master or a sporty and purpose-built Yacht-Master II.

Often, many collectors turn to the second-hand market to purchase a Rolex Yacht-Master. Of course, the price is a big factor, but due to the durability and overall build quality, a used Rolex Yacht-Master represents a highly competitive offering. Because these watches are purpose-built to withstand weather and water, they tend to age well even if they have been heavily worn, loved, and used. Another reason that collectors turn to the second-hand market is to get their hands on early models. Since the Yacht-Master has only been around for about 30 years, it is still quite easy to track down some of the early references. This is a great opportunity for collectors who not only love the Yacht-Master as a watch but who also want to make a smart investment for their collection that has great potential to increase in value.

Rolex introduced the Yacht-Master in 1992 as a high-end companion to the Submariner. Typically made from precious metals, gold, and platinum, the Yacht-Master was designed to be more luxurious on the water. Fast forward to 2007 and the Yacht-Master II was introduced with more of the serious sailor in mind. Built with a mechanical countdown timer, the Yacht-Master II is used for synchronizing the start of sailboat races.

At 44mm, the Yacht-Master II is the largest model in the Rolex lineup. Made from Rolex’s own 18ct gold, the 44mm case is one solid piece. Rolex created their own foundry for creating metals and alloys that live up to the extremely high Rolex expectations. The caseback is crafted from matching 18ct gold and screws down to seal the watch and give it a 100 meter waterproof rating. On the right side of the case is a screw-down crown with a Triplock waterproof system and 2 pushers made from 18ct gold.

On top of the case is a 18ct gold bezel with a blue Cerachrom ceramic insert filled with gold paint that contains actual gold for an unmatched shine. The bezel not only is a beautiful piece, but uniquely functional. Ring Command is an engineering masterpiece created by Rolex that connects the rotation of the bezel to the mechanical movement.

Turning the bezel clockwise or counterclockwise will allow the user to set the time, date, and countdown timer. Using the bezel in conjunction with the movement is a pretty rare design and a special Calibre 4161 movement was needed. Designed and built completely in-house by Rolex, the 4161 is a self-winding automatic movement with many functions. The most complicated function is the mechanical count-down timer with a memory! The timer can be set between 1 and 10 minutes for starting sailboat races, but you can also reset the timer and it will go back to the same minutes you originally set it for. Along with the mechanical timer the 4161 also keeps extremely accurate time, as it is a Swiss COSC certified movement.

The dial on John’s Yacht-Master II is hand finished in white and is surrounded by yellow gold hour markers that are filled with Rolex’s own Chromalight luminescent material for a bright blue glow. At 6 o’clock is a gold dial that keeps track of the seconds and from 8 o’clock to 4 is the countdown timer display surrounded in blue. All of the hands are crafted in yellow gold, polished, and filled with Chromalight as well.

The bracelet on the Yacht-Master II is the classic Rolex Oyster design, made from 3 solid links of 18ct gold.

The outside links contain a brushed finish while the center links are polished to a mirror finish. A folding 18ct gold Oysterlock claps brings the bracelet together and features Rolex’s Easylink extension for tool free adjustment. The Yacht-Master II, like all other Rolex models, is not an easy find at your dealer. While demand is not as high as something like a Daytona, expect to still pay over retail if you buy one on the secondary market. The retail price is $43,550 and if you have to get yours on the secondary market expect to pay around $50,000.

Congratulations to John Daly and his son, John Daly II, on winning the PNC Championship. It was a great weekend of golf and so fun to see families come together to enjoy this game. I know we will see more of John on the Champion’s Tour, and hopefully he has a few more gold watches to show off!

The correct abbreviation is kt. A carat is a unit of measurement for gemstones. One carat is 1/5 gram. Gold is graded in karats with 24kt being pure gold. 18kt gold is 75% gold and the highest percentage normally used for watches or jewelry settings.

Tom Kim won his third PGA Tour event this weekend with the successful defense of the Shriners Children’s Open. The South Korean won the 2022 event and held off Adam Hadwin this year to add another victory to his young career. When he was presented with the crystal trophy, Tom was wearing a very rare and sought-after watch on his wrist: an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked in Black Ceramic.

Tom Kim is an Audemars Piguet ambassador, and we have seen him in a few great pieces over his short professional career. I think he obtained this rare and highly collectible Royal Oak back in February this year when he posted it on Instagram. He captioned the post “Dream Piece” and I am willing to bet it would be high on the list of any collector.

The case is 41mm and made from black ceramic that is highly scratch-resistant and more durable than you would expect. Most of us think of ceramic as brittle plates and tiles, but AP worked for years to come up with a more durable formula that can take a few bumps and knocks without shattering. The iconic octagon Royal Oak bezel is made from matching black ceramic and held in place with eight hex screws. The caseback features a large sapphire crystal window so you can view the back of the movement, while the skeleton dial gives you the rare view of the front. The dial is listed as Openworked Slate Grey, but the grey is really the baseplate for the movement, where most of the 245 parts are attached. Pink gold hands and hour markers stand out subtly and make the dial somewhat easier to read.

This movement we get to see is AP’s Calibre 3132, a self-winding movement made in-house by Audemars Piguet. A pink gold bridge holds one of the two balance wheels in place and stands out in the lower right quadrant of the dial. Two balance wheels and springs are mounted on the same axis to add stability and increase precision from the springs. This automatic movement is wound by the natural movement of the wearer’s wrist as a pink gold rotor spins on bearings. The 3132 contains 38 jewel bearings and offers around 45 hours of power reserve.

A Royal Oak bracelet flows seamlessly from the case and is made from full black ceramic. The top and underside of the case are a brushed finish while the angled sides are high polish. This unique finish isn’t easy to do on ceramic — as it is much harder than steel — and can take over 30 hours to complete. The folding clasp has dual triggers to release it and there is an AP logo on the outside.

Now this is not a watch that you can just walk into your Audemars Piguet dealer and buy for its $98,100 price. These Openworked models, especially the Black Ceramic, are only offered to AP’s best clients, so the supply is very limited. On the secondary market, if you can get your hands on one, expect to pay around $295,000 for one in very good condition.

WOTW: Viktor Hovland’s Audemars Piguet Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin

Viktor Hovland just won the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup in convincing fashion! Viktor played some amazing golf over the past few weeks and capped it off with a five-stroke victory over Xander Schauffele. As Hovland collected his many trophies from the win, he was wearing a rare and collectible Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in Pink Gold on his wrist.

One of the most famous and collectible watches in the world is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. The Royal Oak has been in production since 1972 when Gérald Genta designed the sports watch. That was a time when cheaper quartz watches were booming and boasting more accuracy than the Swiss timepieces. The Royal Oak debuted as a very large and very expensive sports watch that many thought would never sell. Well, it did sell and is now an icon of luxury watch design. The watch Viktor is wearing could be the standard Jumbo or the 50th Anniversary model, but the only way to tell is to see the back of the watch.

Audemars Piguet’s “Jumbo” Extra Thin Royal Oak takes its size from the original 1972 watch that was so famous. The jumbo nickname stuck because at the time 39mm was a very big watch. The case is 39mm and made from solid, 18-carat pink gold with a display window in the caseback to view the movement. There is a matching pink gold crown on the right side of the case and screws down to help give the watch a 50-meter water resistance rating. The beautiful and famous octagon bezel sits on top of the case and is crafted from matching pink gold and held in place with 8 hex screws. This bezel holds the extremely scratch-resistant, glare-proofed sapphire crystal in place.

A smoked grey dial is finished with Audemars Piguet’s “Petite Tapisserie” pattern. The “Petite Tapisserie” texture features the smallest square pattern with a milling throughout it. Audemars Piguet used a similar tapisserie dial in the Royal Oaks from the 1980s and 1990s. AP currently uses the “Grande Tapisserie” with the Royal Oak and the “Méga Tapisserie” textures with the larger Royal Oak Offshore models.

Inside the Jumbo is Audemars Piguet’s self-winding Calibre 7121 movement. Made up of 268 pieces, the precise movement is engineered to keep the hours, minutes, seconds, and date. One can expect to get around 52 hours of power reserve out of the movement and it runs smoothly at 28,800 vph on 33 synthetic sapphire jewels. The winding rotor is made from solid 22k gold and features the AP initials in it. Now there is a version of this exact watch that celebrates 50 years of the Royal Oak. The difference is that the rotor on the anniversary model has a “50 Years” logo crafted into the rotor. A classic Royal Oak bracelet is attached and made from solid links of 18ct Pink Gold. The brushed finish on all of the lugs is done perfectly so all of the links have the same grain on them. An AP logo is etched into the folding clasp and brings the bracelet together.

If you can find one of these Royal Oak models at your local dealer, expect to pay $78,300 to get it on your wrist. On the secondary market, you will need to almost double that amount to get one, $130,000. If you want one of the 50th Anniversary models, add another $25,000 to that secondary market price.

Viktor Hovland made 10 birdies to shoot the course record 61 at Olympia Fields to win the BMW Championship. Hovland fought off some big names on Sunday but walked away with a two-stroke victory over Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick. While celebrating his win, Viktor was wearing a very special, extremely rare Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar on his wrist.

Audemars Piguet is no stranger to pushing the limits of watch design, that is how the Royal Oak came to life. Back in 1972, now legendary watch designer Gérald Genta, created the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet to combat the “quartz crisis” that was taking over the watch world. The first Royal Oak was too big, too expensive, and it probably saved the Swiss luxury sports watch market. AP has pushed the limits with design and materials for their watches over the years by using titanium, carbon fiber, and ceramic. Audemars Piguet doesn’t list this Royal Oak as a limited edition, but more of a limited production model that only AP’s top clients get access to.

Audemars Piguet has been making a Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar since 2015 but released this ceramic version in 2019. And this isn’t the first white ceramic watch that AP has graced us with, they have been working with the material for 10 years. Viktor’s rare Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar has a 41mm case that is made from White Ceramic with a matching ceramic crown on the right side. There aren’t too many external pieces of the watch that aren’t ceramic, but the caseback is made from stainless steel and contains a sapphire crystal window to view the mechanical movement. Eight screws hold the caseback in place and seal the case for a 20-meter water resistance rating.

The absolutely iconic octagon, Royal Oak, is also crafted from White Ceramic and is held down with 8 hex screws. A beautiful dark blue dial is treated with AP’s Grande Tapisserie pattern of raised squares that are further textured for a unique but classic look. White subdials surround the dial to tell the month, day, date, moon phase, and even if it is a leap year. White gold hour makers and main hands are polished for a mirror-like finish and filled with a luminous material for reading in low light.

The heart of this flashy piece is Audemars Piguet’s Calibre 5134 movement. The 5134 is self-winding and offers 40 hours of power reserve. A total of 374 parts are used to build this very complicated perpetual calendar. Most perpetual calendars are designed to keep accurate time and date functions until the year 2100. On March 1st of 2100, a perpetual calendar will have to be adjusted by a watchmaker in order to keep up with a leap year change.

A gold rotor is visible through the case back and winds the watch while 38 jewels keep it running smoothly. AP’s Royal Oak bracelet is crafted from white ceramic and perfectly finished with a combination of brushed and polished links. Ceramic is very hard to get perfect and Audemars Piguet is known to be one of the best at getting it right. The other main, non-ceramic, piece of the watch is the stainless steel folding clasp. The steel is blackened and polished for a clean look and features the AP logo on the outside.

This piece was only sold through Audemars Piguet boutique stores and offered to their best clients. If you were lucky enough to have that relationship with a boutique you could have been offered a White Ceramic Perpetual Calendar for $93,900. But most of us are not on that list and for us, it is very hard to get a watch that will cost a massive amount on the secondary market. Expect to pay around $285,000 for one now, which is down from the high of almost $500,000 a year or so ago.

1. (C) Summary: Moscow Mayor Yuriy Luzhkov remains a loyal member of United Russia, with a reputation for ensuring that the city has the resources it needs to function smoothly. Questions increasingly arise regarding Luzhkov's connections to the criminal world and the impact of these ties on governance. Luzhkov remains in a solid position due to his value as a consistent deliverer of votes for the ruling party. Unfortunately, the shadowy world of corrupt business practices under Luzhkov continues in Moscow, with corrupt officials requiring bribes from businesses attempting to operate in the city. Overview: The Kremlin's Luzhkov Dilemma

2. (C) Moscow Mayor Yuriy Luzhkov is the embodiment of political dilemma for the Kremlin. A loyal, founding member of United Russia and a trusted deliverer of votes and influence for the ruling party and its leader, Prime Minister Putin, Luzhkov's connections to Moscow's business community -- the big and legitimate as well as the marginal and corrupt -- has enabled him to call for support when he needs it, to deliver votes for United Russia, or to ensure that the city has the resources it needs to function smoothly. Luzhkov's national reputation as the man who governs the ungovernable, who cleans the streets, keeps the Metro running and maintains order in Europe's largest metropolis of almost 11 million people, earns him a certain amount of slack from government and party leaders. He oversaw what even United Russia insiders acknowledge was a dirty, compromised election for the Moscow City Duma in October, and yet received only a slap on the wrist from President Medvedev.

3. (C) Muscovites are increasingly questioning the standard operating procedures of their chief executive, a man who, as of 2007, they no longer directly elect. Luzhkov's connections to the criminal world and the impact that these ties have had on governance and development in Moscow are increasingly a matter of public discussion. Although Luzhkov was successful in winning court-ordered damages from opposition leader Boris Nemtsov for his recent publication "Luzhkov: An Accounting," Nemtsov and his Solidarity-movement allies were heartened by the fact that the judge did not award damages on the basis of the corruption accusations themselves, but rather on a libel technicality.

4. (C) Few believe that Luzhkov will voluntarily relinquish his post prior to 2012, when the Moscow City Duma must submit a list of mayoral candidates to Medvedev for his selection. United Russia will probably call on Luzhkov's political machine and his genuine public support to deliver votes for them in the 2011 State Duma elections, as well as the 2012 Presidential contest. With no apparent successor in line, and with no ambitions beyond remaining mayor, Luzhkov is in a solid position. The evidence of his involvement -- or at least association -- with corruption remains significant. This cable presents that side of Luzhkov -- one that bears not only on Luzhkov and his handling of local politics, but on Putin and Medvedev as they move toward the 2012 elections.

Background on Moscow's Criminal World

5. (C) The Moscow city government's direct links to criminality have led some to call it "dysfunctional," and to assert that the government operates more as a kleptocracy than a government. Criminal elements enjoy a "krysha" (a term from the criminal/mafia world literally meaning "roof" or protection) that runs through the police, the Federal Security Service (FSB), Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD), and the prosecutor's office, as well as throughout the Moscow city government bureaucracy. Analysts identify a three-tiered structure in Moscow's criminal world. Luzhkov is at the top. The FSB, MVD, and militia are at the second level. Finally, ordinary criminals and corrupt inspectors are at the lowest level. This is an inefficient system in which criminal groups fill a void in some areas because the city is not providing some services.

6. (C) XXXXXXXXXXXX told us that Moscow's ethnic criminal groups do business and give paybacks. It is the federal headquarters of the parties, not the criminal groups, who decide who will participate in politics. XXXXXXXXXXXX argued that the political parties are the ones with the political clout; therefore, they have some power over these criminal groups.

Crime groups work with municipal bureaucrats, but at a low level. For example, the Armenians and Georgians were formerly heavily involved in the gambling business before city officials closed the gambling facilities. These ethnic groups needed protection from law enforcement crackdowns, so they sought cooperation with the municipal bureaucrats. In such scenarios, crime groups paid the Moscow police for protection.

Luzhkov's Links to Criminal Figures

7. (S) XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

8. (S) According to XXXXXXXXXXXX, Luzhkov used criminal money to support his rise to power and has been involved with bribes and deals regarding lucrative construction contracts throughout Moscow. XXXXXXXXXXXX told us that Luzhkov's friends and associates (including recently deceased crime boss Vyacheslav Ivankov and reputedly corrupt Duma Deputy XXXXXXXXXXXX) are "bandits." XXXXXXXXXXXX. XXXXXXXXXXXX said that the Moscow government has links to many different criminal groups and it regularly takes cash bribes from businesses. The people under Luzhkov maintain these criminal connections. Recently, ultranationalist LDPR opposition party leader Vladimir Zhirinovskiy strongly criticized Luzhkov and called for him to step down, claiming that Luzhkov's government was the "most criminal" in Russian history. This remarkable denunciation, carried on state TV flagship Channel One, was widely seen as an indirect Kremlin rebuke of Luzhkov.

9. (S) XXXXXXXXXXXX told us everyone knows that Russia's laws do not work. The Moscow system is based on officials making money. The government bureaucrats, FSB, MVD, police, and prosecutor's offices all accept bribes. XXXXXXXXXXXX stated that everything depends on the Kremlin and he thought that Luzhkov, as well as many mayors and governors, pay off key insiders in the Kremlin. XXXXXXXXXXXX argued that the vertical works because people are paying bribes all the way to the top. He told us that people often witness officials going into the Kremlin with large suitcases and bodyguards, and he speculated that the suitcases are full of money. The governors collect money based on bribes, almost resembling a tax system, throughout their regions. XXXXXXXXXXXX described how there are parallel structures in the regions in which people are able to pay their leaders. For instance, the FSB, MVD, and militia all have distinct money collection systems. Further, XXXXXXXXXXXX told us that deputies generally have to buy their seats in the government. They need money to get to the top, but once they are there, their positions become quite lucrative money making opportunities. Bureaucrats in Moscow are notorious for doing all kinds of illegal business to get extra money.

10. (S) According to XXXXXXXXXXXX, Luzhkov is following orders from the Kremlin to not go after Moscow's criminal groups. For example, XXXXXXXXXXXX argued that it was only a public relations stunt from Putin to close gambling. XXXXXXXXXXXX said he did not see the sense in suitcases of money going into the Kremlin since it would be easier to open a secret account in Cyprus. He speculated that the Moscow police heads have a secret war chest of money. XXXXXXXXXXXX said that this money is likely used to solve problems that the Kremlin decides, such as rigging elections. It can be accessed as a resource for when orders come from above, for example, for bribes or to pay off people when necessary. XXXXXXXXXXXX postulated that the Kremlin might say to a governor that he can rule a certain territory but in exchange he must do what the Kremlin says.

11. (C) Notwithstanding Luzhkov's solid position, some of our contacts believe that cracks have appeared in his armor, due

to his corrupt activities. XXXXXXXXXXXX told us that Luzhkov has many enemies because his wife has the most lucrative business deals in Moscow and many people think Luzhkov has received too much money. XXXXXXXXXXXX. XXXXXXXXXXXX asserted that Luzhkov is "on his way out," although he acknowledged that the Kremlin has not identified a suitable replacement yet. Issues such as corruption and traffic congestion have, to a certain degree, eroded Luzhkov's popularity. Putin, XXXXXXXXXXXX said, will likely pick the quietest and least expected person to replace Luzhkov.

In Moscow, Everyone Needs a "Krysha"

12. (C) According to many observers, the lawless criminal climate in Russia makes it difficult for businesses to survive without being defended by some type of protection. XXXXXXXXXXXX explained how bribes work in Moscow: a cafe owner pays the local police chief via cash through a courier. He needs to pay a certain negotiated amount over a certain profit. The high prices of goods in Moscow cover these hidden costs. Sometimes people receive "bad protection" in the sense that the "krysha" extorts an excessive amount of money. As a result, they cannot make enough of a profit to maintain their businesses. If people attempt to forego protection, they will instantly be shut down. For example, officials from the fire or sanitation service will appear at the business and invent a violation. According to XXXXXXXXXXXX, everyone has bought into the idea of protection in Moscow, so it has become a norm. In general, Muscovites have little freedom to speak out against corrupt activities and are afraid of their leaders.

(C) XXXXXXXXXXXX explained that Moscow business owners understand that it is best to get protection from the MVD and FSB (rather than organized crime groups) since they not only have more guns, resources, and power than criminal groups, but they are also protected by the law. For this reason, protection from criminal gangs is no longer so high in demand. Police and MVD collect money from small businesses while the FSB collects from big businesses. According to XXXXXXXXXXXX, the FSB "krysha" is allegedly the best protection. He told us that, while the MVD and FSB both have close links to Solntsevo, the FSB is the real "krysha" for Solntsevo. This system is not an incentive for smaller businesses and nobody is immune; even rich people who think they are protected get arrested. According to Transparency International's 2009 survey, bribery costs Russia USD 300 billion a year, or about 18 percent of its gross domestic product. XXXXXXXXXXXX argued that the "krysha" system has led to an erosion of police internal discipline. For instance, young police officers spend their money buying luxury vehicles that a normal worker could never afford.

14. (S) Despite Medvedev's stated anti-corruption campaign, the extent of corruption in Moscow remains pervasive with Mayor Luzhkov at the top of the pyramid. Luzhkov oversees a system in which it appears that almost everyone at every level is involved in some form of corruption or criminal behavior. Putin and Medvedev's dilemma is deciding when Luzhkov becomes a bigger liability than asset. While public sentiment against Luzhkov has grown since the "tainted" elections in October 2009, United Russia's leadership knows that he has been a loyal supporter who can deliver voter support. Ousting Luzhkov before he is ready to go could create major difficulties because he could link others in the government to the corruption. While reforming Luzhkov's questionable activities might seem like the right thing to do, for now keeping him in place, efficiently running the city, is United Russia's best option. Ultimately, the tandem will put Luzhkov out to pasture, like it has done with fellow long-term regional leaders like Sverdlovsk oblast governor Edward Rossel and Tatarstan President Mintimir Shaymiyev.

Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen has bone fracture in wrist, could miss opening day

DUNEDIN, Fla. — Toronto Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen has a fractured bone in his right wrist and could miss opening day, manager John Schneider said Friday.

Jansen sustained the injury to the pisiform bone when he was hit by a 93.4 mph fastball from Pittsburgh’s Carmen Mlodzinski during the eighth inning of Wednesday’s spring training game.

“It’s a small bone between the hand and wrist,” Schneider said.

Schneider said Jansen is unlikely for the March 28 opener at Tampa Bay.

“He’ll have to catch and ramp back up and hit,” Schneider said. “Hopefully the first couple weeks of the season he’ll be back.”

Alejandro Kirk is likely to get a bulk of the time at catcher while Jansen is out.

The 28-year-old Jansen hit .228 with 17 homers and 53 RBIs in 83 games last season. He was sidelined between May 24 and June 13 by a strained left groin, and his season ended with a broken right middle finger sustained Sept. 1 when hit by a foul ball during a game against Colorado.

Jansen agreed to a $5.2 million, one-year contract that avoided arbitration. He is eligible for free agency after this year’s World Series.

Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen out 2 weeks with wrist fracture

Toronto Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen will be sidelined at least two weeks with a small fracture in his right wrist.

Manager John Schneider announced Friday that Jansen, 28, sustained a broken pisiform bone when he was hit by a pitch on Wednesday.

Toronto opens the regular season in two weeks, visiting the Tampa Bay Rays for a four-game series from March 28-31.

Jansen hit .228 with a career highs in home runs (17) and RBIs (53) in 86 games in 2023, his sixth season with the Blue Jays. He is a lifetime .224 hitter with 65 homers and 196 RBIs in 409 games.

Jansen's absence likely means more action for primary backstop Alejandro Kirk , a 2022 All-Star who batted .250 with eight homers and 43 RBIs in 123 games last season.

‘Ukrainian drones’ allegedly attack Moscow again – photos, video

Two large blasts hit the Moscow-City business district of the Russian capital overnight on July 30, apparently from drone attacks, causing damage to two office buildings, halting traffic, and temporarily shutting down one of Moscow’s airports.

The attack on the Russian capital was carried out by “Ukrainian drones,” Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin calimed early on July 30.

“During the night, an attack by Ukrainian drones was carried out. The facades of two office towers in the (Moscow)-City were slightly damaged. There are no casualties or injuries,” said Sobyanin.

The Russian Defense Ministry has already accused Ukraine of an “attempted terrorist attack.”

“One Ukrainian UAV was destroyed in the air-by-air defense systems over the territory of the Odintsovo District of Moscow Oblast (on the south-western outskirts of the Russian capital),” it said on Telegram .

“Two more drones were suppressed by electronic warfare and, having lost control, crashed on the territory of Moscow-City’s non-residential building complex.”

The attack is the latest in a string of drone assaults on Moscow, the last one occurring on July 24, when two buildings were hit. The Russian authorities typically claim that all attacking drones are brought down by air defenses, or jammed and disabled by electronic warfare systems.

Kyiv is yet to comment, but Ukraine typically declines to claim responsibility for attacks on Russia.

Later, Moscow emergency services reported one person had been injured in an explosion at the Vysota Oko-2 tower in Moscow-City.

Traffic along Testivska Street in the Moscow-City area, where the drones damaged the facades of two office towers, has been blocked, according to Kremlin-controlled news agency RIA-Novosti, citing the transportation department.

Videos of the Moscow-City explosions were later posted on social media.

In one, the sound of the petrol engine of a drone can be heard, before an explosion and fireball erupts at the base of the Vysota Oko-2 tower. Another shows light from an explosion captured on a car dashcam.

The first drone appears to have attacked the 10th floor of the IQ Quarter tower in Moscow-City, where the office of the Russian Ministry of Digital Development is located. Passersby found documents from this ministry on the street after the explosion, according to media reports.

The same tower also houses two other Russian ministries — the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

As reported by the Telegram channel BAZA, the cladding of the IQ Quarter in Moscow-City was damaged after the attack, affecting an office space. The glass of a neighboring tower was also damaged.

Moreover, due to the attack, Vnukovo Airport had to close for takeoffs and landings, according by the Russian state news agency TASS.

Vnukovo Airport was closed at approximately 4.40 a.m., and flights were redirected to other airports, causing delays, according to RIA-Novosti.

Some aircraft had to circle in the skies over Moscow for several hours, awaiting clearance for landing.

Other Moscow airports, such as Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo, operated as usual.

Approximately an hour later, at 5.20 a.m., Vnukovo resumed flight operations.
