Timeline History and Story of Bertram Yachts

1. richard bertram and his fondness for yachting.

Bertram was a competitive sailor and owned a yacht brokerage firm, outside of Miami that he started in 1947. This was his bread before he began the Bertram Yachts. But his fondness for yachting can be dated way back. He was about eight years old when he got his first boat which was a 15’ sneakbox. This was the age when boating became his favorite pastime.

While he was studying at Cornell University, he founded Cornell’s very own Corinthian Yacht Club. Under his participation, the university club won several sailing titles till 1937. He continued sailing even after moving to Miami and even made it to the World Lightning Class championships for the years 1948 and 1949. He went on to participate in several races only to find a company in the other two people. These people were Sherman F. “Red” Crise and Sam Griffith.

2. Foundation of Bertram Yachts (1960)

In 1958, while participating in one of his races, Richard Bertram noticed a 23-foot-long beauty and immediately fell in love with it. He had never seen a powerboat so magnificent that he himself wanted to own one. He asked the designer, C. Raymond Hunt, to design one for him. Using Hunt’s plan, Bertram in 1960 built his first powerboat yacht Moppie. It was named after his wife’s pet name. This laid the foundation of Bertram Yachts.

3. Introduction of New Boats (1962, 1963 and 1964)

Bertram Yachts later went on to build new boats. There were three that were built, which were: The 25’ line in 1962 The 38’ line in 1963 The 20’ inboard/outboard model in 1964 While producing these yachts, Bertram decided to have its own production unit. Many people do not know but the production facility was designed in such a way that it could also work as a food-processing warehouse, just in case. Luckily, Bertram never needed it.

4. Memorial Race for Partner Griffith (1963)

Bertram’s partner passed away in 1963. So, Richard Bertram organized a memorial race to pay tribute to him. Not only did he organize but he also participated and won the race.

This was the time that he became a celebrity. He was seen in Rolex advertisements and on billboards promoting Camel cigarettes. He had successfully associated his name with the title of ‘Champion’.

5. Nautec Purchased Bertram

Bertram left after his success and the factory came to a standstill. After this incident, Nautec purchased Bertram and started the facility again.

6. Whittaker Corporation Purchased Bertram (1968)

After a short run of ownership, in 1968 Whittaker Corporation purchased Bertram Yachts from Nautec and they continued competing in different events and winning them all.

7. The Era of Steady Growth (1970 to 1980)

After the Whittaker acquisition, Bertram Yachts saw steady growth all through from the 1970s to the 1980s.

8. Hatteras- The Arch-rival of Bertram (1980s)

Bertram developed a new arch-rival with Hatteras. The dual was sad for Bertram as Hatteras won it with their more diverse models.

9. Financial Difficulties for Bertram (1993)

Bertram continued to produce sportfishing boats. This along with the depleting economy of America, caused Bertram Yachts to go under financial difficulties. This led to a forced shutdown in 1993.

10. Bertram Yachts Purchased by Ferretti Group (1998)

Bertram Yachts was revived by Ferretti Group as it acquired it in 1998. The Italian group changed everything and built some amazing models.

11. The Sad Demise of Richard Bertram (2000)

In 2000, the father of the company, Richard Bertman passed away, leaving behind a brilliant legacy and a colourful history.

12. Acquisition of all Bertram’s Assets by Gavio Group (2015)

In 2015, the Gavio Group got hold of all of Bertram’s assets and planned to introduce some new models.

The Present Scenario of Bertram Yachts

Despite the ups and downs and the acquisition changes, Bertram continues to be a popular yacht brand. In 2018, Bertram Yachts under the ownership of the Gavio Group introduced a new model, Bertram Yacht 61 Convertible at the Newport International Boat Show on September 13, 2018.

A Rising Tide: Inside Tampa’s Bertram Yachts

By mckenna kelley, bertram yachts had plenty of options when planning to bring the classic designs and sleek engineering of their nearly 60-year-old boat brand fully into the 21st century..

Though many of the world’s top yachts are built in places like Germany and the Netherlands, Bertram made a some-what unique choice for the location of its new ship-yard in 2016: a 120,000 square-foot bayfront facility near Tampa’s West Shore Boulevard.

“My first choice was Florida,” said Beniamino Gavio — of the Italian corporation Gavio Group, which acquired Bertram Yachts in 2015 — in a statement announcing the new relocation. “We believe that Bertram belongs to this country. Bertam started in Miami, and we want to keep Bertram in Florida in order to preserve the connection with its history.”

Bertram CEO Peter Truslow says the move to Tampa was a major part of the company’s efforts to build a better Bertram.

“Bertram considered waterfront facilities throughout the Southeast but chose Tampa because of the incredible boat-building workforce and supplier base in this area,” he adds. “Miami was no longer a practical place to build boats, but it was important for us to stay in Florida. Our shipyard, right at the Gandy Bridge, is a perfect place to launch and test the new Bertrams. It’s also a perfect lo-cation to service the growing number of large yachts in this area.”

To that end, Bertram has launched two new models built here in Tampa — the Bertram 35 and Bertram 61 , with a 50-foot model expected later this year. The 35 is a modern spin on Bertram’s original model, the 31-foot Moppie, that company founder and powerboat racer Dick Bertram used to win the 1961 Miami-Nassau Race in four hours and 20 minutes.

In many ways, the Bertram 31 seems custom-designed for Tampa’s lifestyle — elegant, yet practical. Built with what the company deems “superior fishing capabilities and innovative luxuries,” the 31 is made for deepwater fishing in the Gulf of Mexico but is also fitted with deep propeller pockets sized to allow for flats fishing in Tampa Bay’s shallower waters. Features like the 12-foot, 5-inch beam and deep-v hull design (which provides a smoother ride) also set the model apart. Inside the boat, a panoramic and frameless window lets natural light into the galley (with Amtico flooring, Corian countertops, a SubZero refrigerator-freezer combo, and a two-burner induction stove) and open state-room, making the space comfortable and livable for both serious fishermen and leisure cruisers.

Bertram also gives boat owners a variety of ways to customize their crafts; among other fixtures, the exterior paint colors, interior upholstery, configurations, seating arrangements and hardtops are chosen by each buyer. The company has delivered about 20 Bertram 35 models around the globe since 2017.

“The new 35 represents the absolute best of both worlds,” Truslow said in a statement on the boat’s construction. “Yes, the 35 is comfortable, but she’s also as rugged and offshore capable as any Bertram ever built.”

Perhaps most importantly for Tampa, Bertram has hired more than 100 locals — including shipbuilders, engineers and customer service professionals — to support the company’s rapid growth, with plans to hire for more than 100 additional positions. Bertram is also contributing to Florida’s $10 billion boating industry, the country’s largest. In 2017, $3 billion was spent on new power boats and accessories in Florida.

“Florida is the No. 1 market for boats in the world. The state’s incredible growth in population and wealth will support Bertram for many years to come,” Truslow says. “There is a strong boat-building culture in this area that we are keeping alive, and local resources like the universities and MacDill Air Force Base help support our hiring efforts.”

Bertram Yachts for Sale

Northrop & Johnson offers a variety of Bertram sportfishing yachts for sale. Bertram Yachts has a heritage that dates back to 1960 when its founder Dick Bertram, a yacht broker, bluewater sailing yacht racer and powerboat racer, built the first Bertram – the 31-foot Glass Moppie, designed by naval architect C. Raymond Hunt. The Bertram 31 was a yacht that was ahead of its time both in terms of design and power. The Bertram 31 won the 1960 Miami to Nassau Race, setting a new course record, and it heralded the start of Bertram’s award-winning line of performance and sportfishing boats ranging up to 80 feet.

Today, the Bertram World Headquarters in Tampa, Florida, encompasses a 120,000sq.ft shipyard and marine service facility, with 40-foot-high buildings and high-tech fiberglass construction equipment.

Beloved by big-game anglers around the world, Bertram continues to build composite luxury performance yachts from 50 feet (15.5m) to 80 feet (25m) that are designed for fishing, but double as comfortable offshore cruisers. Bertram offers three standard models; the 35, 50 and 61. The largest Bertram to date is a 25-meter Bertam 80, which was introduced to their product line in 2010. The Bertram 80 features four ensuite cabins and has various layout options, including one which provides for a small complement of crew. Northrop & Johnson partners with several sportfishing yachts; Bertram yachts has many unique designs available on the market.

Bertram Sportfish & Convertible Yacht History

The first Bertram vessel, the Bertram 31, made its commercial debut at the New York Boat Show in 1961 and the design was offered in three model variations: the V-31 Convertible Sport Cruiser with fold-down bimini top; the V-31 Hardtop Sport Cruiser; and the V-31 Flybridge Sport Cruiser. The Bertram 31 Glass Moppie won the Miami to Nassau Race again that year, shattering its own previous race record and the Bertram Shipyard was officially opened in 1962.

Bertram Yachts became a division of the Nautec Corporation, a subsidiary of the Motor Products Corporation, and the infusion of capital funded the research and development of many new models, also leading to the acquisition of a new production facility on the Miami River.

As the company grew, so did its reputation, with the development of many noteworthy models including the Bertram 28, Bertram 46 and 54. Builders of high-quality craft for the US Coast Guard and military, Bertram quickly established itself as one of the finest yacht building companies in the world.

In 1977, the shipyard began building bigger luxury sportfishing yachts with the Bertram 58 Convertible. The Bertram 72 Convertible became the flagship of the fleet in 1989.

In the early nineties, Bertram-Trojan Inc. was forced to file for bankruptcy. While Aqua Buoy acquired Trojan Assets, the Italian Gruppo Varasi bought Bertram and quickly withdrew the company from bankruptcy proceedings, injecting USD 25 Million into Bertram and hiring John Adams (ex Hatteras) to run the company.

In 1997, the economic downturn in Italy pushed Gruppo Varasi to sell its subsidiary Santavalaria, which owned Bertram, to Teknecomp SpA. Teknecomp changed its name to Intek SpA and installed Gianni Morace (ex CEO of Baglietto Shipyard and Rodriguez Shipyard) to run the company day-to-day. Following this change of status, in 1998 Intek sold Bertram to Italy’s Ferretti SpA – a well known yacht-building corporation and owners of other notable brands such as Riva, CRN, Pershing and Aprea Mar.

In 2015, the company was sold again. This time acquired by Beniamino Gavio and Gruppo Gavio who, as experienced yachtsmen and Bertram owners themselves, pledged to rebuild the Bertram brand in America.

The all-new Bertram Yachts hired Peter Truslow as CEO and purchased a waterfront shipyard in Tampa, Florida, where new vessels would be built as well as service and refit for existing vessels offered. A new Bertram 35 was introduced at the 2016 Newport International Boat Show and was an instant hit with huge sales success.

The Bertram Fleet

The Bertram production line features three key models: the Bertram 35 (the ‘Moppie’), Bertram 50 and Bertram 61. Encompassing all the qualities of the original Bertram 31, on which this notable brand has been established, through to the yard’s flagship model which is very much a 21st-century boat, all the designs are undoubtedly Bertrams, with distinctly recognizable exterior profiles.

Whilst staying true to the Bertram’s intended use as a sports fisher, the Bertram 61 features a luxurious interior with three en suite cabins, an open-plan saloon and galley, and two decor packages from clients to choose from.

The Bertram History

From the moment Richard Bertram’s wooden hulled ‘Moppie’ braved six-foot waves and thirty-knot winds to win the Miami-Nassau Race with a record-breaking time in 1960, the yachting world would never be the same. Richard Bertram built the first fiberglass 31 Bertram from a cast of his winning ship, designed by C. Raymond Hunt and named after Bertram’s wife. The following year Bertram again won the Miami-Nassau race, this time in the fiberglass 31 ‘Glass Moppie’. From C. Raymond Hunt’s protypical powerboat hull in 1957, Richard Bertram developed the deep-V hull that, perfected over the years, lets Bertram vessels slice through waves at speed in a fashion that other companies have proven unable to duplicate. A rented warehouse in Hialeah, FL was the original base of production of the now-legendary 31 Bertram. Richard Bertram had a string of racing successes in various Moppie models, culminating in his setting the World Speed Record for diesel engines. He applied the structural integrity knowledge he gained during the races to constructing new models. The company built 1,986 Bertram 31s over 16 years, including 50 special-edition models. The iconic vessel came in four configurations: the original open Sportfisherman with a lower steering station and no aft bulkhead, the Fly Bridge Cruiser with a rear bulkhead, a hardtop, an express cruiser, and the Bahia Mar model. Whittaker Corporation acquired Bertram in 1968, expanding the Bertram factory to become one of the largest pleasure-boat builders in the world. Over the next five decades, the legendary Miami-based sport fishing yacht manufacturer has become one of the world’s most successful and respected marine enterprises. Over the entire span of Bertram Yachts’ History, the company has built unparalleled customer loyalty with their dedication to the finest details of design and engineering. It has emerged that the  four gunmen charged  in the murder of at least 139 concert-goers at Moscow's Crocus City Hall theatre  were all citizens  of the small post-Soviet nation of Tajikistan in Central Asia.

Does their nationality have anything to do with their alleged terrorism? Many Russians probably think so.

Tajikistan, a landlocked country of 10 million sandwiched between Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and China, is the  most impoverished  of the former Soviet republics. Known for its corruption and political repression, it has chafed under the  iron-fisted rule  of President Emomali Rahmon since 1994.

There are estimated to be well over  3 million Tajiks  living in Russia, about one-third of the total Tajik population. Most of them hold the precarious status of " guest workers ," holding low-paying jobs in construction, produce markets or even cleaning public toilets.

While Russia's  declining population  has led to increasing reliance on foreign workers to fill such needs within its labour force, the attitude of Russians towards natives of Central Asia and  the Caucasus region  is generally negative.

It's similar to the American stereotype about Mexicans so infamously expressed by  Donald Trump  in 2015: "They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists."

Non-Slavs are systematically  discriminated against  in Russia, and since 2022 they have been  disproportionately conscripted  and sent to Ukraine to serve as cannon fodder at the front.

Tajik exclusion

As I have described in a  recent book , few nations in history have seen their standing so dramatically reduced as the Tajiks have over the past 100 years.

For more than a millennium, the  Tajiks — Persian-speaking descendants of the ancient Sogdians who dominated the Silk Road  — were Central Asia's cultural elite.

Beginning with what's known as the  New Persian Renaissance of the 10th century  when their capital, Bukhara, came to rival Baghdad as a centre of Islamic learning and high culture, Tajiks were the principal scholars and bureaucrats of Central Asia's major cities right up to the time of the Russian Revolution.

The famous medieval polymath Avicenna was an ethnic Tajik, as were the hadith collector Bukhari, the Sufi poet Rumi, and many others.

But as the most significant purveyors of Central Asia's Islamic civilization, Tajiks were seen by the Bolsheviks as representing an obsolete legacy that socialism aimed to overcome.

The Tajiks were virtually excluded from the massive social and political restructuring imposed on Central Asia during the early years of the Soviet Union, with most of their historical territory, including the  fabled cities of Samarkand and Bukhara , being awarded to the Turkic-speaking Uzbeks who were seen as being more malleable.

Only as late as  1929 were the Tajiks given their own republic , consisting mostly of marginal, mountainous territory and deprived of any major urban centres.

An impoverished region

Throughout the 20th century, the  Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic was the most impoverished and underdeveloped  region of the former Soviet Union, and it has retained that  unfortunate status  since independence in 1991.

From 1992-1997, the country was plunged into a devastating civil war that destroyed what infrastructure remained from the Soviet period. Since that time, Rahmon has used the threat of  renewed civil conflict  to vindicate his absolute rule.

The spectre of  radical Islam  emanating from neighbouring Afghanistan —  where the Tajik population considerably outnumbers that of Tajikistan  — has provided additional justification for Rahmon's repressive policies.

In today's Tajikistan even those with a university education find it almost  impossible to earn a salary  that would enable them to build a normal family life.

Disempowered and humiliated by the system, they are easy prey for radical Islamic preachers who give them a sense of value and purpose.

The added backdrop of financial desperation makes for an explosive cocktail: one of the suspects in the recent Moscow attacks reportedly told his Russian interrogators that he  was promised a cash reward of half a million Russian rubles (about US$5,300) to carry out his alleged atrocities. .

Terrorism as desperation?

Normal, sane human beings everywhere are horrified by terrorist acts regardless of how they are justified by their perpetrators, and the long-suffering people of Tajikistan are no exception.

But unfortunately, the conditions under which a small number of extremists can perceive the psychopathic murder of innocent civilians for cash or ideology as an attractive option show no signs of abating.

Russia's laughable attempt to somehow link the Moscow attacks  to Ukraine  is a clumsy diversion from the consequences of its relations with Central Asia.
