South Wales, mooring/marina/boat advice. Please

Hi, I am seriously thinking of getting another boat and will be looking to use it mainly off Swansea. There are two ways to go on this as I see it and they would be - 1. Small fast boat to keep at home on the drive and get in and out of the water easily as necessary. Pro's, no costly mooring fee's and flexible fishing. Con's smaller boat will be necessary and the missus wont like it out the front. 2. Larger boat on a mooring/marina. Pro's, missus will be happy its not on the drive, larger boat as wont have to get in and out of the water. Con's, costly mooring fee's/winter storage etc. What would be good in helping me suss out what I am going to go for would be a little local knowledge and experience. The questions I have in my mind are - Are there any slipways around the Swansea area that are easy to access and use with a large estate car....?? Are there any moorings or a marina around Swansea that are not so costly...?? Advice on a small boat would be good also if I go down that route. Thanks very much for any help in advance. Rgds Mac

Hi Mac If you are thinking of mooring on a budget look at the local yacht club mooring prices. In Cardiff yacht club the membership is around £240 and mooring about £280 (for a 30' boat) so a little over £500 overall. The marina in the bay whould charge around £2500 for a year mooring. There is a vast difference in paying £10 a week to having to pay £50 a week, especially in bad weather when you don't get to use it. I'm not sure about Swansea but I suspect you would find a similar situation.

There are a couple of council run slips at the Mumbles, Swansea. One gives access about 2.5 hours either side of HW, the other gives access pretty much the whole tide. The first slip is very wide but is pretty steep & launching with an estate would depend on the weight of boat. The second slip is much narrower but not so steep. My mate launches a Raider 18 on this second slip with a Mondeo to give an idea. An 18ft boat in Swansea Marina is about £1,200 to give you an idea. Small boat choice is really down to budget & what you expect to do with it. headlight

ETEC said: Cardiff yatch club does look cheap but the one off fees are a bit much 2300 for a pontoon berth one off fee 100 one off joining fee membership single 220 moorings up to 25' 250 + 5 per extra ft so the first year for a 30' boat it would be 2895 ETEC Click to expand...
taylorbay said: should you ever sell your boat, you will get the pontoon fee back, minus 125 for admin, so not really a cost, just put to one side....and if you do your work levy (10hrs), you can reduce your cost by a further 100 per year. still the cheapest about, imo. hope it helps, not confuses. dave Click to expand...

All, thanks very much for some very useful advice so far, much appreciated. Regarding the type of boat, I would be looking to spend between 6 and 10K. Looking for - Good sea craft, easy to launch, fast but economical, cuddy for perhaps an overnight anchored up in close and storage. Rgds Mac

raider for sale on here now at 7.5k thats a bargain. if its the cuddy version it is not sleepable but good for storage. i used to have a raider 18 and now got a baywatch 550 and the baywatch i would say takes a wee bit longer to get on the plane with the same engine. both are stable for fishing and am as pleased with this one as i was with the raider. difference being i paid 5.4k for this and 8.5k for the raider. take into account what comes with the boat as you can spend a small fortune kitting a boat out. good luck anyway!!!

try afan boat club port talbot ,compound n slip around 300 per annum(year) lol cant spell

The raider on here is in the clasified section, is the wheel house ONE AND YOU CAN SLEEP OVERNIGHT ON IT at 7500 and it wont be there long at that price as its an english one ETEC

I actually tried to find the raider for sale before I noticed the year!

I am rejoining Afan boat club again this year. I had a 16ft dory I trailered everywhere from Plymouth to Milford and launched from beach and slip. Thoroughly enjoyed! I used to be a member of Port Eynon Bay boat club, but the beach and slip were very rocky at times, especially after a bit of a blow, don't know what they are like now!!!! Damaged the prop and Keel a few times, got trailer stuck etc. Oxwich has gone very expensive in my opinion. I now have a bigger boat, QS 530, didn't fancy beach launching so needed a slip. Afan has boat storage and a slip for £280 a year, launching around 3hrs each side of high water, with some very good fishing within minutes of hitting the water. Mumbles has Two slips, one is 3hrs each side of high the other usable at all times except on springs, cost last time I used it was £6.50 for launch and car park. As said previously beach launching from Oxwich and Port Eynon. Slip at Lougher for I think £5.00, but very very tidal with strong cross flow. Burry Port harbour has a few slips, but don't know of prices. Hope this helps! ARGH. bit of a waste this reply, just read etec's last post - just goes to show you should read all of the thread before replying!!!!!!!!!!!

^ as said above portalbot around 300 for the year from March to march

Marks and spencer sale.

Marks and Spencer is a British multinational retailer operating under the M&S brand. It is one marks and spencer sale of the largest clothing retailers in the world and the largest selling clothing retailer in the United Kingdom. With over 700 stores located throughout the UK, Marks & Spencer offers a wide range of products including clothing, homewares, beauty products and electrical goods.

Marks & Spencer began as a small family run drapery business in Leeds in 1884. It was founded by Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer, who were both Jewish immigrants from Germany. The company expanded rapidly during the early 20th century by opening new stores across Britain and Ireland. By 1926 Marks & Spencer had opened 100 stores across Britain and Ireland but then suffered a decline between the 1930s and 1940s due to competition from Woolworth’s & John Lewis. In 1964 M&S acquired an exclusive licence to sell Barbizon products which allowed them to expand their clothing range with ready-to-wear as well as lingerie lines for women and children’s clothes for girls aged 2–14 years old; this proved popular with customers who could now buy clothes that fit correctly without having to alter them at home first!

Cardiff Yacht Club is a thriving yacht club that was originally founded in Cardiff in 1900. Today, the club is centrally located on the edge of Cardiff Bay, overlooking the Wetlands Nature Reserve, with panoramic views over the Bay and the Bristol Channel beyond.

The Ranie Buoy (PORT HAND BUOY) marks the extremity of the rocks and sand spit of Lavernock Point. The south Cardiff cardinal buoy makes the southern extremity of the Cardiff Grounds. From a position between the two buoys make a course for the Outer Wrach Buoy (West Cardinal Buoy). Follow the Wrach Channel and Buoys into the Cardiff Bay Outer Harbour.

When approaching from the South or West, leave the Ranie Buoy (FL(2)R.5s) to PORT and the SOUTH CARDIFF (FLQ(6)+LFL.15s) to STARBOARD. Steer a course for the OUTER WRACH BUOY (FLQ(6)+LFL.15s). You will pick up the SECTOR LIGHTS for the WRACH CHANNEL (oc 10s WRG). Stay in the white sector until you pick up the Buoyed channel for the CARDIFF BAY OUTER HARBOUR and the sector light (LFI.WRG5s). Note: Vessels coming from Kings Road (Avonmouth) are advised to use the SOUTH/WEST APPROACH. It is important that you keep a careful watch for large vessels coming from Cardiff Docks as they are severely constrained by their draught.

On approach to Cardiff Bay you should contact Barrage Control on VHF 18 to request a lock in. They will advise you of the next available lock and give the instruction to enter the outer harbour.

  • Inbound locks run quarter past and quarter to the hour
  • Outbound locks run on the hour and half hour
  • Please be sure to observe the light signals displayed

Afternoon All Its been 3 years in the working, complete refurbishment but I could be ready to launch my Invader 2200 in the next couple of months. I would like to keep it in Cardiff Bay, any suggestions which club would be best ? Cheers Stu

Well-known member

use a standard sand wedge for the approach, even if the bunker is wet. A more lofted iron could be useful downwind.

Hi Stu,I can recommend Cardiff Yacht Club, nice bunch of people lots going on, check out our website, or the other option is Cardiff Bay Yacht club. At CYC wednesday night is a good night to meet people and have a chat, or failing that saturday lunchtime, see you soon.

We joined CYC a year back and I have to say I have found the club to be welcoming and very friendly. It is, I think, more 'club like' and volunteer run, rather than professional, which I find very good. There is one chap in particular to watch out for, mind, but I think he's already replied...... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Mymobo

Cardiff bay yacht club, is a good place to berth.

Allan

In 2004 I had the same problem, I visited all the places on the bay and decided on CYC. I have never had any regrets. I would suggest you do the same and see how you feel about each place. Allan

Exactly as Allan did, I visited both clubs in the Bay - At CBYC I was mocked for only having a boat of 26' by the most pompous individual I have ever met (who claimed to be the owner of a 48 footer, which is more than twice as long as a 26'???), at CYC I received a very warm welcome. I joined CYC and again like Allan have no regrets. I have to say though that I have since met many members of CBYC who are perfectly friendly, so I may have just met their club's resident idiot.

Actually, Huw, I think that might be right. Louise and I were at CBYC for a month whilst buying Ishtar and working on her in the compound there. I have to say that everyone was very friendly, and we spoke to a lot of people. From what I saw, I don't think it would have been a mistake to join there either, although we are very happy at CYC.

As I said all the other CBYC members I've met have been perfectly friendly, so I don't doubt I just asked the wrong person. My Uncle (who is very down to earth) is a member of CBYC's dinghy section which appears to be very friendly and very well run. However I was also put off by the distance I would have had to walk to the boat if it were on a pontoon I could afford, and by the fact that the marina right next to them was cheaper.

Active member

If you want to join a club, then it's either CYC or CBYC. You really do have to go along and decide what's important to you. When we did this in 2004 there were various pros and cons at both. We decided on CBYC. Others choose CYC. You may be forced to one or the other by availability anyway.

i very much doubt that the marina next to cbyc is cheaper think you should re check your figures

Csail

Marina is way more unless Hue means Cambrian.

Have just checked both websites and it is no longer the case but when I bought my boat (2006) I initially took it to cambrian (now cardiff) marina. The cost there was only £115 per metre per year (quite possibly as part of an offer, because its £205 now) but cbyc was £29 per foot plus £200 membership. Therefore for my 26' boat cambrian was cheaper and offered a shorter walk to the boat. I joined CYC as I wanted a club atmosphere and it was much cheaper.

Is it still possible to get a swinging mooring at CBYC?

there are still swinging moorings outside the clubhouse at cbyc but at the moment there is a waiting list for those. fore and aft moorings way up river are still available and at a cheaper rate than the swinging moorings but its a long way to row up to your boat, good if your on a tight budget though

Thanks for all the advice, I'm considering CYC, so hopfully will see some of you down there ! Cheers Stu

i think whichever club you decide to join it would be good if the two cruising sections could get together now and then and have some joint cruising trips, we at cbyc had a great trip up to portishead last weekend with five boats attending and reading some of the posts from cyc members lately seems that these guys are having some fun trips lately would be good to all meet up through the summer the more boats the better seems most of the animosity or rivalry between the two clubs goes way back before most of us were involved in boating hopefully we can all move forward and just enjoy the sailing and socialising, lets just hope the weather is on our side this summer

I would be happy to arrange any combined cruising type section between both clubs and i'm sure Barebones will be up for it. For those that don't know there is the funsail website to inform of planned sailaways. Contact me via my web address below.

Thats good news,see you soon.

Sail Training charity looking for mooring and volunteers we are looking for a "cheap" mooring for our 40' McArthur, currently moored in Bristol Harbourside. We are using our boat to do sail training to take young people on. We are a not for profit organisation if anyone could offer any advice or would like to help us in our aims/objectives we would love to hear from you. We will also be recruiting volunteer crew and qualified skippers to take our boat out so any contact from you guys would be very welcome and we also hope to take part in some races later this year feel free to look us up at www.breakfreefoundation.org Thanks Karen

Boat owners want limit on increase in mooring fees

Boat owners in Guernsey want a limit on the proposed increase in marina mooring fees.

When surveyed, the majority of Guernsey Yacht Club's members were not in favour of the suggested increase.

A spokesperson for the club said local boat owners should not be paying for "expenditure not attributable to them and, in particular, the large deficit incurred in running the airport".

They pointed out that parts of the harbour are available for use by all, free of charge, and this should be considered when discussing charges.

In previous years, mooring fees have risen in line with inflation.

The proposal to increase 2024 mooring fees will be made at the March States meeting.

CARDIFF BAY

Cardiff Bay Yacht Club

History of CBYC

Penarth Motor Boat and Sailing Club was formed in 1932 and changed to Cardiff Bay Yacht Club in 1999. It is situated on the water’s edge overlooking Cardiff Bay, Europe’s most exciting waterfront regeneration scheme.

There is a vast difference in paying £10 a week to having to pay £50 a week, especially in bad weather when you don't get to use it.
