The HopYacht30 Catamaran

We designed the HopYacht 30 catamaran with the aim of taking stress out of sailing, by simplifying many aspects of traditional yachts. The HopYacht 30 is designed for couples (or families with young children). The vessel is easy to sail short-handed and is perfect for coastal packages or sailing from bay to bay. The HopYacht30 also has de-mountable hulls and fits two standard 40′ containers, so she can be shipped easily. She is also designed with the same beam as a typical 35-40 foot monohull, making berthing easy and also saving on mooring costs.

The HopYacht30 has only one sail, making sailing relaxed and easy. Owners can add an asymmetric spinnaker as an option. The cabin, saloon and cockpit are all on one level with great interior flow and light. The galley is integrated into the under-cover cockpit and the forward cabin has a queen sized island bed.

The HopYacht30 is equipped with electric sail drives to be more green, and reducing noise.

Et hop, on part en vacances sur l’eau, en couple ou en famille. Le HopYacht 30 inaugure un nouveau segment de la plaisance – facile, économique et non polluante.

L’architecture du HopYacht 30 est signé Du Toit Yacht Design qui dessine également les catamarans Balance. Mais ici, le design évoque plutôt celui des powercats électriques de grande taille.

Le mât, haut de dix mètres, est implanté tout à l’arrière du roof. Le génois triangulaire de 30 m² peut offrir une vitesse de 7 ou 8 nœuds par 15 à 20 nœuds de vent.

Présenté au Boatica Cape Town en octobre dernier, le HopYacht 30 a été imaginé et construit en Afrique du Sud. Ce catamaran bouscule les habitudes du nautisme avec un concept (r)évolutionnaire : pour la première fois, un concentré de confort et d’habitabilité est réuni dans un bateau de moins de 10 mètres ultra-facile à manœuvrer qui privilégie la détente et le plaisir, le tout sans rejet de CO2. Nous avons pu découvrir ce drôle de multicoque au large d’Athènes.

En découvrant le HopYacht 30 dans la Marina Zeas, toute proche du port du Pirée, je découvre une silhouette résolument moderne à laquelle certains devront (peut-être) s’habituer. On a affaire à une cellule de vie cubique. Cette nacelle utilisant 80 % de la longueur des deux flotteurs, elle offre une habitabilité record pour la taille. Le look très anguleux des superstructures rappelle celle d’un Sunreef Supreme 58 ou d’un Silent Yacht 60. Là s’arrête la comparaison, car la longueur de notre HopYacht représente tout juste le maître-bau d’un seul de ces deux grands powercats. Sa largeur limitée à 3,44 m surprend puisqu’elle est comparable à celle d’un monocoque de même longueur. Ce gabarit autorise au Hopyacht 30 un accès dans les marinas à un tarif raisonnable. C’est donc sur un ponton en principe réservé aux monocoques que nous sommes accueillis par Mary-Clare et Paul Tomes, les cofondateurs de cette toute nouvelle marque sud-africaine. Très enthousiastes, ils me précisent d’emblée la signification de HopYacht : « pouvoir bondir à bord et démarrer aussi vite, faire un saut d’une baie à l’autre o...

The HopYacht we tested back in the spring of last year enthralled us with a very simple concept: to offer a simple, economical multihull based around a large double bed which, of course, offers an unobstructed sea view.

Though somewhat iconoclastic, this catamaran proved very easy to sail, with its large furling genoa. The brand’s French distributor, MV Yachting, has just announced an even more basic version, stripped of its rig. But of course, the electrical system is retained, providing 8 hours of autonomy at 4.2 knots (or just over 30 nautical miles), with no CO2 emissions or noise pollution. For recharging, you’ll need to rely on a shore power outlet and/or 1,600 W of solar panels. Hi Jim. Having spoken to the yard the cruising speed is 4.5 knots and top speed 7.5 knots. As could be expected the sea state will affect these numbers. I bumped into one of the yard owners, Paul, yesterday at Royal Cape Yacht Club, Cape Town. He was busy loading the first of the full electric versions (no sail) which is on its way to the Farr East. The owner had ordered it with a extra 10kw battery bringing the total up-to 38.8kw!

What are full speed and cruising speed under electric please? you quote the time but not the speeds.

Hi Innes. Have referred your question to the HopYacht management and they came back with the following answer. Best rgds, Bruce Stirk (Head New Build Boats) "Apart from all the systems being grounded and a galvanic isolator there is no built in lightning protection on the standard boat. This could be offered as an option. The boat is built to CE certification category C. "

Summertime and the sailing is easy.

Would it make it easier for you to get through winter knowing that you could have a brand new HopYacht 30 ready to make next summer the best ever?

The timing is perfect. We have just finalised the 2024 HopYacht specification with a significant number of new features, all designed to add so much more to your summer lifestyle on board.

Firstly, anticipating long lazy summer days ahead, we’ve upgraded the fridge from a 60L capacity to a 130 litre Isotherm Inox stainless steel fridge / freezer. This is built into the space under the helm station, opposite the galley unit. Alongside the new fridge we've added a large grocery storage cupboard.

With more room for refreshments, we added a great new place to enjoy a sundowner. The new gangplank design can also be deployed to join the two aft hulls giving you a walkway and a unique beach area to sit, drinks in hand with your feet dangling in the water!

And with more refreshments, you also have a better solution to recycle all the empty bottles or cans. On the aft side of the helm station plinth, we’ve added a built in 40 litre tip out bin!

If summer gets a little hotter than expected, you now have the option of a low-energy air conditioning system built in, designed to keep the cabin area cool, even if you don’t have shore power connected.

Multihulls World Test Sail our HopYacht 30

To coincide with the Multihulls World Magazine ' Forever Green ' edition, seasoned yachting journalist Nobert Conchin joined us in Athens to test sail our HopYacht 30. We held our breath when he stepped on board. Would he like the boat? Would he enjoy the concept of the single sail, on what he described as (best said with a French accent) a 'mini yacht?'.
