Howmar 12 day sailor vs catalina expo 12

I found a howmar twelve locally. Looks like a fun little daysailer. I also found a Catalina expo 12 as well. It's much newer and has a roller furling sail where as the homar has a lateen sail. http://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/boa/4883505196.html  

The two boats are quite different. The Howmar seems a bit more substantial, with higher freeboard and more comfortable seating. The Catalina looks more like a beach toy. Both boats feature a single sail with neither of the rigs looking too complicated. The Howmar looks like it has a bigger sail, which could be useful if you have light wind in your area. What you want to do with the boat will determine which is best for you.

The Howmar 12 , sometimes written Howmar Twelve , is an American sailing dinghy that was designed by Craig V. Walters of Sparkman & Stephens as a one-design racer, trainer and day sailer and first built in 1983. [1] [2] [3] [4]

The design was Sparkman & Stephens' design #2405. It was built by Howmar Boats Inc. and its successor company, The New Howmar Boats Corp, in the United States , starting in 1983. A total of 200 boats were completed, but it is now out of production. [1] [4] [5]

The Howmar 12 is a recreational sailboat , built predominantly of fiberglass , with wood trim and foam flotation. It has a fractional sloop with anodized aluminum spars and a loose-footed mainsail , with an adjustable outhaul . The hull features a nearly plumb stem, a vertical transom , a transom-hung rudder controlled by a tiller and a retractable centerboard. Both the centerboard and rudder are made from polyurethane . The boat displaces 175 lb (79 kg) and is self-bailing. [1] [4]

The boat has a draft of 2.50 ft (0.76 m) with the centerboard extended and 0.33 ft (0.10 m) with it retracted, allowing beaching or ground transportation on a trailer or car roof rack . [1]

The design's sharp prow is intended to cut though waves and the design is capable of planing . It incorporates dry storage in a bow compartment. [4]

Factory options included a boom vang , a hinged mast step, hiking straps and a mount for an outboard motor . [4]

Operational history

In a 1994 review Richard Sherwood wrote, "roomy for its size, the Howmar Twelve is a racer, trainer, and day sailer. The hull’s light weight makes for easy cartopping." [4]

1982 Howmar Phantom

Seller's Description

Hi, I’m selling my 14’ Howmar Phantom sailboat that’s in excellent condition. This is a slightly larger sunfish-style boat that sails great even in light wind. I’ve had the boat for several years and over that time it’s been extensively overhauled. Upgrades include:

-Deck sanded and painted/new bottom paint -Sail professionally re-furbished with patching and stitching -New lines (halyard and main sheet) -Customized padded bunks for trailer -New wiring installed on trailer -Wheel hubs on trailer disassembled and re-packed with marine grease in 2018

The boat also comes with a new canvas cover for storage. The boat has been stored inside when not on the water and is registered through 2021. It’s been a great boat for learning how to sail, and always draws compliments at the boat launch. This boat is ready to take to the lake today!

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Howdy: Anybody know where I could source a copy of the Howmar Phantom Sailboat Manual ? Have a two page rigging PDF but left the full instructions in the sailbag and it's toast. Many Thanks,

The boat is a copy of a Sunfish (right?). Beyond rigging (which is simple) what additional instruction would you need?
