Rolex engraves or assigns a 4-6 digit model number to every watch type it produces. This number can be found engraved between the lugs on the side of the case above 12 o’clock. The model number can indicate the model type, bezel, and material of your watch. For example, the reference number 16234 can be broken out into three section, which is 162 | 3 | 4. The first, 162, indicates that this watch is a Datejust. The second, 3, indicates that the bezel is fluted. The third, 4, indicates that the watch material is Stainless w/ 18k White Gold.

Rolex Clasp Codes

Many Rolex watches have a clasp code located inside the clasp hinge. This code is based on the month and year the clasp was manufactured. After inspecting the clasp you will see 1 or 2 letters followed by a number. The letter corresponds with a year and the number signifies a month. For instance, per the table below, we see that a bracelet stamped G4 was manufactured in April 1982. A service replacement bracelet would have an additional "S" stamped along with the year.

Rolex Clasp Codes

Country Codes

The table below lists all the 3 digit country codes for Rolex watches. This country code can be found in the upper left hand corner on the Rolex Guaranty Certificate. There is no country code for the USA and most watches older than 1980 will NOT have a country code.

Country Codes

Sapphire Evolution

The upgrade to the sapphire crystal occurred on the following years. This data was originally compiled from Professor Rolex Matthias.

Red Letters

Some of the older papers issued in the United States have red letters stamped on the certificate. These red letters signifies when the watch was shipped from Rolex USA to an Authorized Dealer.

For example, L RCCT would be 3 1998 or March 19, 1998.

The Rolex serial numbers are found between the lugs on the side of the case at the 6 o'clock side, behind the bracelet. This 4-8 digit number is engraved by Rolex on every watch and it can be used to determine its production date. Beginning in 2005, the Company started to also engrave the serial number on the inside flange (or "rehaut" as it's called in French) between the dial and the crystal. Starting in 2008, the Company began to only engrave the numbers on the rehaut. We provide this verified database chart for those folks looking for an answer to an often asked question, "where or how do I find the Rolex serial numbers on my watch."

Rolex Serial Numbers Explained

These sets of numbers, for example 28000 for the year 1926 or Z000001 for year 2006, are inscribed by machine on the side of the watch case between the lugs at 6 o’clock (see below). It is very helpful to know the official Rolex production date to help us determine its market value.

How To Find The Serial Numbers On Your Rolex Watch

The serial numbers can be found in one of two places on the watch. First check the inner rim of the watch face (also called the rehaut, which is french for "flange") between the dial and the crystal. If the watch was produced in 2005 or newer the serial should be engraved on the rehaut.

On older Rolexes, this serial is located on the side of the watch case at the 6 o'clock position where the bracelet is attached. To view these serial numbers, the bracelet must be detached from the 6 'clock side of the case. For instructions on removing the bracelet, see the video to the right or call us at 1-800-494-3708 to speak with a Rolex expert. You can also learn by watching the video at the top of the page.

Rolex has been engraving their watches with a unique Rolex serial numbers , and Rolex models number since the 1920’s as tool to track the production year of a Rolex watch. The production age of a pre-owned Rolex watch is a significant factor in determining its current market value. As you would expect, the value of a Rolex watch, unlike a fine wine, will decrease in value as new, improved models are launched by Rolex. For example, watches that have Rolex model numbers beginning with the letter Z were produced in the year 2006 and, all things considered, are valued higher than say a Rolex with serial numbers that begins with P for the year 2000. The age along with other factors such as the condition of the bracelet will help Bob's establish the true, fair market value of the wristwatch. This distinctive serial number is located on the inside case of the watch between the lugs below the 6 o’clock end of the watch. It is a five to seven digit number starting with 28000 in the year 1926. You will need to remove the bracelet carefully from the watch using a small screw driver or tack. While this number will tell us when the watch was made by Rolex, it will not tell us when the watch was eventually sold. Also worth noting is that the condition of the watch is as important as its age. The Rolex serial numbers (also referred to as Rolex style numbers or case number), is also helpful in determining if a watch such as a Submariner watch is a genuine authentic Rolex as some fakes do not have serial numbers (see How To Spot a Fake Rolex article for tips). When inspecting the different models of Rolex watches this "look up" tool, or widget, is the only one of its kind in the industry and allows people to easily find the manufacture date of their pre-owned Rolex by the Rolex band serial numbers. Ebay has a list or chart of the serial numbers with estimated production dates but they too do not have an easy to use look up tool like we provide here.

Note: If you need help on how to find the Rolex case number (serial #), please view the video below or check out find my Rolex serial numbers for a quick and easy tutorial about how to find Rolex numbers. Also refer to the Rolex Serial Number Chart below.

A Word About The Rolex Serial Number

Because each new Rolex design is typically evolutionary rather than revolutionary, distinguishing a late model Rolex from an older watch can be difficult. Design differences are subtle. A Rolex Submariner purchased in 2000 is often virtually identical to the same reference purchased a few years later.

However, you can determine the age of your watch by using our simple Rolex serial number lookup tool. This easily allows you to determine the approximate production date of your Rolex for watches manufactured up to 2010.

The Rolex serial number is sequential from 1926 through the middle of 1987, and you can look up the production year in a reference table. From mid-1987 through the fall of 2009, the serial number contains an easy-to-understand date code.

A Reset in 1954

It’s worth noting that in 1954 Rolex production reached 1,000,000 total units. Rather than letting the sequence continue with seven digit numbers, they reset to 100,000. When serial number 999,999 came up again, Rolex continued the serial number sequence into seven digits.

Confusion on the age of watches produced between the mid 1950’s and early 1960’s can often be cleared up because Rolex also put date codes inside many of the case backs of these watches.

Beginning in the spring of 2010, Rolex went to a random numbering system for serial numbers. There currently is no tool to identify production date for watches produced after that time.

Find the Rolex Serial Number

rolex yacht master ii serial number

On models produced before 2007, the Rolex serial number is located between the bottom lugs (where the band connects to the case). You will need to remove the band to view the serial number.

Between 2006 and 2007, Rolex began to engrave the serial number on the dial rehaut, or inner bezel, at the six o’clock position (as well as between the case lugs) on some models. It takes close inspection but the number is visible through the crystal. Between 2008 and 2010, Rolex gradually phased out engraving the serial number on the case between the lugs.

Determining the Production Year of Your Rolex

For watches produced from 1926 until 1987, the Rolex serial numbers are sequential. Use the table below to look up the production year of your watch. From 1987 until 2009, the letter preceding the serial number designates the watch’s year of manufacture.

It’s also important to note, the Rolex serial number is not an absolute identifier of the watch’s production date. Components may have been stockpiled for some before being used for assembly. But it’s safe to say the serial number provides a 1-2 year range on the age of the watch.

These will be found behind the bracelet by the 6 o’clock area. By noting what this 4-8 digit number is engraved on every watch by Rolex, it can be determined what the production date is.

Starting in 2005, Rolex began to engrave the serial number of the watch on the rehaut (also called an inside flange), located between the dial and crystal. And, in 2008, they started to engrave the serial numbers only on the rehaut.

When Rolex produces a watch, it assigns a four-to-six digit model number and engraves it on each watch. The number is found between the lugs right above the 12 o’clock location on the side of the case. The number can be used to identify the model, bezel, and material of your specific watch. For example, if you have a Rolex watch with the reference number 116506, this number would be divided as follows: 1165/0/6. This watch would be a Daytona Cosmograph (1165) that has a polished bezel (0) and is made of platinum (6).

Rolex Clasp Code

You’ll also find that Rolex watches may have a clasp code. The clasp code is located on the inside of the clasp hinge. The code will show the month and year that the clasp was manufactured. There will be one or two letters that will be followed by a number. The letter will signify a year while the number relates to a month. For example, when you review the chart, a bracelet that shows L5 was made in May 1985. If the bracelet is a service replacement one, there will be an “S” included with the year.

Rolex: A Guide To Your Watch's Serial & Reference Numbers

rolex yacht master ii serial number

Rolex: A Guide To Your Watch's Serial & Reference Numbers

Rolex designs some of the best watches in the world. Not only are they beautiful and expensive, but they also run like clockwork. Inside every Rolex is a secret history of what it is and where it came from - and it wants you to know it. ‍ Here’s a guide to help you understand your Rolex better than ever before. Firstly, don’t confuse model numbers with serial numbers. These are two totally different things. The Serial number is a unique number only for your watch and can also tell you the estimated date of production. The model reference is Rolex’s way of identifying the model and materials used on your particular Rolex. First, we’re going to focus on your Rolex’s serial number.

What Is The Serial Number For? This is your Rolex’s passport, driving licence and name all rolled into one short code. It will tell you when it was built and what materials were used to build it, and any other history linked to your particular piece.

Where Is My Rolex's Serial Number? ‍ Every Rolex, be it for men or women, has its own unique number. The location of your Rolex’s serial number will depend on when it was made, but the basic explanation is that it is engraved near your 6 o’clock lugs. ‍ And that’s not a euphemism. Lugs are the part of the watch that attach the body of your watch to the bracelet (or strap). ‍ To explain in another way - if your Rolex was a map, the serial number would be on the “south” of your watch. However, serial number locations differ depending on when your Rolex was made. For example:

rolex yacht master ii serial number

If your Rolex was manufactured before 2007: The serial number will be located between the lugs at 6 o’clock (where the bracelet connects to the watch). You’ll need to remove the bracelet - carefully - to see the serial number. ‍ If your Rolex was manufactured between 2008-2010: Rolex decided this was too complicated and put the serial numbers on the 6 o’clock inner bezel (the thin band between the watch face and the outer casing). ‍ If you have an older Rolex, the serial number may be elsewhere and may also require closer inspection, so we recommend asking an expert to help you find out more.

What Do Serial Numbers Look Like? ‍ This depends on when your Rolex was manufactured. ‍ From 1927-1987, every Rolex had a 5-6 digit serial number depending on the year. ‍ The higher the number, the more recent the Rolex. ‍ From 1987-2010, Rolex’s started with a letter followed by six digits. For example, W00001 would have been the serial number for the first men’s Rolex watch made in 1994. ‍ Since 2010, however, serial numbers have been randomised eight-digit codes; this has now stopped enthusiasts being able to track and date of productions. ‍ For Rolexes with a letter, the letter is the most important part, because it tells you approximately when your Rolex was made. The numbers are just to differentiate one Rolex from his brother and sister watches.

Why Should I Care About My Serial Number? ‍ You’ll be unsurprised to hear that your Rolex’s serial number will have some impact on its worth. But even if you want to keep hold of it, at least you’ll know more about your shiny men’s Rolex than you did before. Its also good to make sure for yourself that the number on your watch matches the paperwork. Many time in the past, offical rolex dealers and staff members have given the wrong paperwork with the watch. This will dramatically effect the value of your Rolex watch.

Understanding Rolex Reference Numbers Each Rolex has its own reference number, but it isn’t necessarily unique. This is because reference numbers relate to how the watch was made, not to differentiate it from its brothers and sisters. ‍ Rolex reference numbers are four-six digits long and should be read like this: xx(xx)/x/x. These three codes (two-four digits/one digit/one digit) will tell you everything you need to know.

Where Is My Reference Number? ‍ This one is easy. It’s between the 12 o’clock lugs (on the opposite side to your serial number). You’ll need to remove your Rolex’s bracelet to see it.

The First, Two-Four Digit Code ‍ This is the model of your Rolex. For example, an Explorer II has a code of 165, while a Yachtmaster could be anything from 166, 686 or 696.

The Second, One Digit Code ‍ This indicates the bezel of your Rolex watch - remember, the bezel sits between the face and the outer casing of your watch. Bezels can be decorative or functional, and the type of bezel will dictate what materials it can be made off (gold, platinum, steel etc.) ‍ The bezel code will always be a number between one and six.

rolex yacht master ii serial number

The Final Digit ‍ This is the material used to make your watch (nine = white gold, six = platinum etc) with a number from zero to nine. Easy! ‍ Can I show off to my friends now that I know everything there is to know about my Rolex? ‍ That’s the whole point! Men’s and women’s Rolex watches aren’t just for wearing, they’re for talking about. And being able to show off your newfound knowledge will squeeze even more value from your already exceptional watch.

Rolex Serial Numbers the Ultimate Resource Guide

Rolex GMT-Master II 116710BLNR 2018 UNWORN for sale online

Rolex Serial Numbers: A Complete Resource Guide

All Rolex watches have serial numbers. With the help of the Rolex serial numbers, you can find out the approximate age of your Rolex watch. Furthermore, the serial number is also a great way to find out the estimated value of your Rolex. In this article, you’ll find a complete guide to Rolex serial numbers as well as a complete list of Rolex serial numbers with which you can find out the approximate age of your Rolex watch.

How to find your Rolex serial number

First thing first, how do you find the Rolex serial number on your watch? Depending on the age of your Rolex, you may be able to find your Rolex serial number in different places. Older Rolex watches have the serial number engraved between the 6:00 lugs, and for these older models, in order to identify the serial number of your Rolex watch, you would have to remove the bracelet . This process can obviously be quite tedious, and without the right tools or expertise, you risk scratching the watch’s lugs or bracelet.

Fortunately, for modern Rolex watches , in order to identify the serial number, you do not need to remove the bracelet. Instead, you can find the serial number engraved at the 6 o’clock position on the inner bezel of the watch under the crystal. It is engraved on what is called the rehaut.

All Rolex watches that have the serial number engraved on the rehaut also have Rolex Rolex Rolex Rolex… text engraved around the whole rehaut. In 2008, Rolex stopped engraving the serial number at case 6 o’clock location, using only the serial engraving on the rehaut. By 2010, this had come to become the case for all Rolex models.

The serial number of modern Rolex watches doesn’t have the serial number between the 6 o clock side between the lugs, but only on the inner rehaut. The main reason why Rolex introduced this change in serial numbers is to make it more difficult for fake manufacturers since it is difficult to laser engrave with the same perfection that Rolex has.

Sports Rolex watches

What year is your Rolex watch?

As mentioned, with the help of your Rolex serial number, you can find the approximate year of your Rolex watch. The best way to find the date and year on which your Rolex watch was sold, however, is to look at the warranty card that came with the watch since it is signed with the date and year. If your Rolex watch doesn’t have a warranty card for some reason, the serial number is a good way to go about it, though.

Sports Rolex watches

In the list that we’ve presented below, you’ll be able to find each Rolex serial number together with a year. To simply find your serial number, look at the list to find the serial number that your watch has, and then look at the year that is connected to it. When buying a Rolex pre-owned watch, you want to verify your watch’s serial numbers with the original Rolex certificate or the Authenticity card that comes with the watch. Have in mind, however, that not all pre-owned Rolex watches come with a certificate of Authenticity card for various reasons.

It’s important to know that it doesn’t necessarily have to mean that your watch was assembled the exact year that your serial number says since rumors have it that Rolex continues to use its different case series until they are finished.

Important notice

It’s important to note that the information regarding Rolex serial numbers is not provided officially by Rolex. Instead, the Rolex serial numbers are crowdsourced by the watch community, creating a complete list. As such, there might be slight variations of the Rolex serial numbers. In other words, the list of Rolex serial numbers may not provide 100% accurate info for dating your Rolex.

Additionally, with the modern random serial numbers, it’s impossible to ensure which production year the watch is from, thus it’s especially important to have the warranty card, not only because of the warranty that Rolex gives your watch, but only to guarantee which year the watch is from.

Random Rolex serial numbers

From the middle of 2010, Rolex started using so-called random serial numbers, which means Rolex started to “scramble” the serial numbers that they use for the watch. The reason Rolex started to use random serial numbers is, according to them, that it made it harder for counterfeiters to pull off their watch as the real deal. Other people, however, mean that the reason why Rolex introduced these random serial numbers was to give less power to secondhand Rolex dealers as having the watch alone would make it impossible to determine the production year of the watch.

Rolex Air-King 116900

Additionally, the random serial numbers would allow authorized dealers to have watches in stock for a longer time since watches that previously showed the production year through their serial numbers and proved that the watch had been in inventory for a long time could be used by the buyer to use as leverage to ask for a lower price.

Remember that watches that therefore are dated from 2010 and forward cannot be dateable through their unique Rolex serial number.

Looking up your Rolex serial number

Now that you know a little bit of background to Rolex serial numbers and know where you find your watch’s serial number, you can use the complete list that we’ve compiled below and compare them to your watch’s serial number. It is especially important to double-check the serial number when buying a Rolex watch to ensure that the watch you are buying is correct to the year and model being sold.

If you buy a Rolex watch with a certificate or Authenticity card and it has a different serial number than on your watch, it will affect the resell value of your watch, and mistakes like this can happen.

Rolex serial number prefix

The letter prefix can be used to tell the year:

G                       2010

Have in mind that from 2010, Rolex changed its serial numbers. From now on, and with all modern Rolex watches, the serial number is made up of 8 digits which consist of randomly generated numbers and letters. As such, with watches from this time and onwards, it’s impossible to use the Rolex serial numbers to date a Rolex watch.

Rolex bracelet clasp codes

While Rolex serial numbers are used most commonly to date watches which are manufactured before 2010, another way that you can date your Rolex watch is by looking at the clasp code. On the hinge of the clasp, you’ll find a number and letters. If the bracelet of your watch isn’t original, at the very least, you can date the bracelet of your watch. Have in mind, though, that it’s only possible to date Rolex watches through the clasp codes which were manufactured before 1976.

Take a look at your watch’s clasp code and then compare them with the list of Rolex clasp codes below to determine the age of your watch (or bracelet)

  • N: 1989
  • W or T: 1995
  • V or U: 1996
  • Z or U: 1997
  • Z or W= 1998
  • CL:  2004
  • MA:  2005
  • OP:  2006
  • PJ:  2008
  • LT:  2009
  • RS:  2010
  •  CP: 2011

We’ve mentioned it once, but have in mind that while these serial numbers are very accurate and curated by experts, they may not be 100% correct since they haven’t been released officially by Rolex.

I have a Submariner with a 7 digit SN beginning with G. I believe this indicate a 2010 manufacture year; however, the bracelet clasp has a 3 digit code beginning with CX, which I believe is a random code indicating 2011 as the bracelet’s production year. Is it still possible that it’s the original bracelet or does this suggest that possibly a bracelet replacement occurred? Thanks.

Hi Tom Since your watch is from the transition period between when Rolex began using random serial numbers, it sounds more likely that the actual case of the watch was manufactured earlier than the bracelet. Watches are not always assembled immediately and there may be some delay between when the parts are manufactured and when they are assembled which could explain the discrepancy between the bracelet code and the serial number.

Hope it helps!

Hi, My old Rolex s/n is 051350 What year is this ? Thanks

Hi, Based on the serial number, it was made in either 1938 or 1954.

MY WATCH HAS THE SERIAL # M139377 INDICATING 2007. THE CLASP READS OP6 WITH A 15/423 BELOW, INDICATING 2006. DOESTHIS SOUND OK. DON

Hi, Yes. It’s important to point out that each part is manufactured separately and at different times so there may be a slight discrepancy between the clasp code and the date of manufacture of the watch. This is particularly true back in the day when Rolex didn’t have the same production output as today and some parts remained on the shelves for some time until finally being assembled.

I have a rolex original box, with paper work, it shows model 16263 , E704960 the band is rolex gold center with stainless steel on each side. Can you tell me more about this watch please.

Hi, The 16263 is a Gold and steel Rolex Datejust turn-o-graph. Turn-o-graphs have become quite uncommon in recent years since Rolex no longer makes this model. The Turn-O-Graph is at its core a regular Datejust with the difference being that the bezel can be rotated to time different things, hence the name. The watch was in production in the 1990s.

Hope this helps!

I have a Rolex submariner no date, the model number on the case says it’s 116610 but I thought that was for the submariner date., or was there a variation when using cases. The serial number is the random type under the glass at 6oclock. Any ideas welcome..

Hi, Reference 116610 is certainly the reference number for the submarine date. It sounds very strange that you would have this number if your watch is a no-date model. I would advise that you have this checked up. Assuming the watch is not fake, the only logical explanation I can think of is that the case was damaged and exchanged some time throughout its life. The best would be to have a watchmaker inspect it so they can see what is going on.

Hi i have an airking sn 244684. Age?

Hi, The serial number dates the year of production to 1957 (assuming it is an older model). You need to check the specific model to determine whether that sounds correct or not, depending on the year of production for the actual reference of your watch.

Rolex Serial Numbers - Where to find & how to use them

rolex yacht master ii serial number

Rolex Serial Numbers

Rolex serial numbers are a combination of alphanumeric digits that is unique to that particular watch and helps to identify that individual Rolex. The serial number is especially useful when buying preowned Rolex , as it can be used to provide some guidance over the year of production of the watch, and also as an insight into the validity of the watch’s title.

Rolex Production Dates by Rolex Serial Numbers (Chart)

Over the years there have been 3 distinct formats of Rolex serial numbers. These will be explained in more detail below, but firstly, here’s the full table of Rolex serial numbers by approximate year of manufacture. There is no official record of Rolex serial numbers to refer to, and over the years serial number records have been pulled together by hand, and passed on by word of mouth, and via the internet, so there will be inaccuracies amongst the data, but the information we have is as accurate as it can possibly be, and where it's not precise, it will be accurate within a year or two at worst.

Lost and Stolen Check by Rolex Serial Numbers

If a Rolex is lost, stolen or subject to an insurance claim, the watch is usually identified as such by creating a record against its serial number. There are two databases where Rolex serial numbers held that are particularly useful. The first is Rolex’s very own lost and stolen database, which is no longer available to public enquirers and held in house by Rolex for their own use, and made available to Police and similar authorities. The only way you can have a Rolex serial number checked against the Rolex database for a particular watch, is when a watch is taken to a Rolex service centr e, or one of it’s agents for works to be carried out on the watch. When this happens Rolex will check the watch against their database, and providing the watch isn’t registered you will receive the watch back with paperwork from Rolex which provides some evidence over the validity of the title of the watch.

The second database is known as ‘The Watch Register’ and their website states that it is ‘the largest international database of lost and stolen watches available for due diligence’. The database is said to have over 70,000 watches registered as lost or stolen, and of these over 22,000 are Rolex. The Watch Register is available for public use and can be accessed for £10 for 1 search.

Whilst both databases are useful in gaining peace of mind over the title of a watch when buying, especially preowned Rolex , it should be noted that just because a watch is not recorded on the either database, it does not mean that the watch is not lost or stolen. Ultimately, if you are buying preowned watches it is worth speaking to your seller to see what provisions they have in place should the Rolex serial number later be discovered to be recorded as a lost or stolen watch.

Sequential Rolex Serial Numbers

The first Rolex watches to carry serial numbers were produced in approximately 1926. Each watch produced was numbered sequentially with a 5 digit code, starting at 00,001. Although no official record of which serial numbers relate to which year, it is possible to give an approximate year of manufacture based on previous records kept. Production years by serial number should be accurate to within a single year. The sequential numbering system extended to 6 digits once 100,000 was reached, but once Rolex got to the verge of 7 digits in 1954, they reset the serial number to start again at 100,000. This meant that between 1954 and 1964 there was an element of duplication of serial numbers and Rolex mitigated this by providing an additional date codes inside the case back. After 1964 Rolex serial numbers increased to 7 digits and ran through to 1987 when, approaching the 10,000,000 mark Rolex changed the serial number system to prevent expanding serial numbers to 8 digits.

Prefixed Rolex Serial Numbers

In 1987 Rolex introduced a system whereby each 6 digit number was prefixed by a letter. Naturally, the first letter Rolex used in this system was R (for Rolex) and in the years that followed they continued with L, E, and the X. Following on from the letters of the brand name Rolex continued with a letter prefixing the numerals which can be approximately attributed to the year of production.

Scrambled Rolex Serial Numbers

The current system employed by Rolex contains a series of 8 alphanumeric characters, and is often referred to as ‘random’ or ‘scrambled’ serial numbers. There is no known year indicator within the serial number configuration, so it’s impossible to identify the date of manufacturer from the serial number of any watch produced numbered in this way since 2010. The only way of getting an idea of the date would be using the date on the warranty card, although this gives the date of warranty registration rather than the date of manufacture.

Where To Find The Serial Number On A Rolex

Depending on the year of production of your watch, the serial number would have been originally engraved in one of two places. Up until 2005, all Rolex serial numbers were engraved between the lugs, below the 6 o’clock position of the case. This meant that to read the serial numbers, the bracelet would have to be removed which requires specialist tools.

Rolex Serial Numbers - Where to find & how to use them Global Watch Shop

From 2005 Rolex changed the placement of serial number to make it accessible to all. From 2005 the serial numbers started to be engraved into the rehault (the wall between the dial and the bezel), also at the 6 o’clock position. This can often be red by the naked eye, or depending on how good your eyesight is, with the assistance of a jewelers loupe or an eyeglass. From 2008 onward, all serial numbers were engraved on the rehaut and ceased to include the serial number between the lugs.

If you have the original Rolex warranty card or papers, the serial number of the watch will also appear here. However, we’d always recommend confirming the card or papers match the watch itself by checking the serial number against the one engraved onto the watch.

WatchGuys

Rolex Serial Numbers

Every watch produced by Rolex is engraved with a serial number as part of the company’s careful and well-planned production process. In addition to being unique per each wristwatch, the numbers perform an excellent job of classifying and distinguishing them. Despite their complexity, this data can help you estimate a watch’s production year. If you’re looking to buy a Rolex watch as an investment, you’ll want to know the approximate year it was made and that’s where Rolex serial numbers come in. Understanding why serial numbers are vital and how they may be used as a reference when you are ready to buy a Rolex is essential, as they are normally separated into three primary sections, each with a particular format, depending upon the year the watches were manufactured. Weather you have a new or old Rolex, WatchGuys is ready to make you an offer if you are ready to sell your Rolex .

How To Find The Serial Numbers On Your Rolex Watch

How can you locate the Rolex serial number on the timepiece, first and foremost? Your Rolex serial number might be located in a variety of places, depending on how old your watch is. To find the Rolex watch’s serial number on older models, the serial number is engraved between the lugs at 6:00, therefore you’ll have to detach the bracelet to find it. This can be a time-consuming process, and you run the risk of damaging the watch’s lugs or bracelet if you don’t have the proper tools or skills.

Fortunately, contemporary Rolex watches don’t necessitate the removal of the band in order to determine the serial number. Instead, the serial number is etched on the watch’s inner bezel under the crystal at 6 o’clock.

Rolex lettering is etched around the entire rehaut on all watches with the serial number stamped on the rehaut. While still keeping the serial number around 6 o’clock, Rolex ceased engraving it in 2008, instead adopting a rehaut engraving. Until 2010, this was the situation with all Rolex models.

Modern Rolex timepieces only carry the serial number on the inner rehaut, not on the 6 o’clock side between the lugs. The primary reason Rolex implemented this adjustment in serial numbers was to make it much more difficult for counterfeiters to laser etch with the same level of precision that Rolex has.

How to check Rolex Serial Number?

As previously noted, the estimated year of the Rolex watch can be determined using the serial number. However, the warranty card which came with your Rolex watch will have a date and year signed on it, making that the ideal place to look for the date and the year of sale. If the Rolex watch doesn’t come with a warranty card, you can still get service by using the serial number.

Since 1926, the Rolex serial numbers for timepieces have been consecutive. Prior to 2009, the letter before the serial number was used to indicate the year of the watch’s construction, from 1987 to 2009.

Important to remember is that the Rolex serial number does not provide an exact time stamp for the watch’s manufacturing process. Some people may have kept their parts in storage before putting them together. However, based on the serial number, you can estimate the watch’s age to be within a range of 1-2 years.

How to Find the Model or Reference Number on Your Rolex Watch?

Rolex reference numbers are provided on Rolex certificates, although they are generally present on the watch casing. To find it, you must first remove the bracelet. On the 12 o’clock side, where the bracelet joins the watch case, its reference number is engraved between lugs.

The reference/model number is essentially a series of numbers that identify the watch, its material, and the type of bezel.

The serial number cannot be used to determine if a Rolex wristwatch is genuine or counterfeit. Rolex does not maintain an official record of serial numbers that they make available. Authorized Rolex retailers are also denied access to the Rolex serial database.

Description

The Moskva-5 (MOCKBA-5 in cyrillic writing) was produced by KMZ ( Krasnogorskii Mechanicheskii Zavod or Krasnogorsk Mechanical factory) in the 1950s. Earlier models of the Moskva were copies of the Zeiss Ikon Super Ikonta C , but it makes more sense to call the Moskva-5 an adaptation. Unlike the Super Ikonta, its solid top plate has a built-in rangefinder and a dual-format viewfinder . The best thing about the Moskva-5 is the coupled rangefinder. A lever with rotating wedge-shaped prisms is fixed to the lens plate. Turning the lens to focus rotates the glass, thus adjusting the rangefinder: a very sophisticated device inherited from the Super Ikonta, with no mechanical linkage between the lens and the body. The two windows are 6.5 cm apart for accurate focusing. The separate viewfinder has a larger field of view, which helps composing the picture. As stated above, a sliding frame in the viewfinder selected on top of the camera can be set to 6×9 or 6×6.

The back of the camera showing the year of production (1958), two red windows for 6×6 and 6×9 numbering, the rangefinder window (left) and the separate viewfinder window (right). The symbol to the left of the serial number is the Krasnogorsk company logo.

Dual Format

Super Ikontas were made either for the 6×9 or 6×4.5 format. The Moskva-5 is a 6×6 and 6×9 camera. Since it has a fixed 105mm Industar lens, at 6×6 you have a mild tele at your disposal. To use the 6×6 size, you need to set the viewfinder to the square format. there is a lever to select the right window so you can see the numbering on the film back. The pressure plate does not need to be removed. The 6×9 red window is now blocked, so there's no room for confusion.

As a last step, the 6×6 mask has to be inserted. The camera locks right into its holes. Close the camera and you're ready to shoot.

The Moment 24c is a leaf shutter with speeds of B, 1 to 1/250s. To fire it, the film needs to be transported or the release button will be blocked, indicated by a red window on the top plate. The shutter isn't set by advancing the film; it has to be cocked at the lens by a lever. To take a picture, press the button on the left of the camera top. The button on the right is for unlocking the front plate when the camera is collapsed. Before folding the camera, you shouldn't forget to push down the lever with the polarised glass window.

The art of command

The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II in 18 ct yellow gold with an Oyster bracelet and a bidirectional rotatable bezel with a blue Cerachrom insert .

Ring command bezel, a synchronized countdown.

Rolex achieved perfection when it turned its attention to redefining the purpose and functionality of the bezel. Typically, a bezel operates independently from the internal mechanism; however, the Ring Command bezel in the Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph operates in conjunction with it.

As a mechanical component linked to the movement, the bezel literally acts as the key to the programmable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronised to the sequence of race start times. Complex in design, but simple in use, it is functionally beautiful.

A characteristic aesthetic

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a new dial, and new hands that are characteristic of Rolex Professional models, enhancing legibility and sharpening its aesthetic appeal. The dial now features a triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock and a rectangular hour marker at 6 o’clock for more intuitive reading of the watch.

A luminescent disc on the hour hand clearly distinguishes it from the minute hand. The Yacht-Master II’s countdown can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting. Once launched, the countdown can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.

18 ct yellow gold

Commitment to excellence

By operating its own exclusive foundry, Rolex has the unrivalled ability to cast the highest quality 18 ct gold alloys. According to the proportion of silver, copper, platinum or palladium added, different types of 18 ct gold are obtained: yellow, pink or white.

They are made with only the purest metals and meticulously inspected in an in-house laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment, before the gold is formed and shaped with the same painstaking attention to quality. Rolex's commitment to excellence begins at the source.

The Oyster bracelet

Alchemy of form and function.

The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex.

This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.
