Plumbing System

The Lightwave 46 has 800L of fresh water & 800L of diesel, in tanks that are built directly into the hull. High quality, purpose grade materials are used in this labour intensive construction method which guarantees an extremely high-quality product that will last for the lifetime of the boat. Dual freshwater pumps provided piece of mind through redundancy. A water transfer line is built into the system to allow water to travel between either tank. Fresh water vacuum toilets that use minimal fresh water (less than 400ml per flush) are a standard feature on the Lightwave 46, eliminating the stale saltwater smell that can encroach the cabin area.  A saltwater system is also fitted to the vessel to allow an anchor wash, saltwater tap in the galley and hose in the cockpit.

Electrical System

The Lightwave 46 is designed for self-sufficient blue water cruising. The vessel is supplied with a 12-volt DC and a 240-volt AC electrical system. A 600Ah AGM battery system is offered on the vessel with an optional 660Ah lithium-ion battery bank. There are various solar options producing up to 2000kw of power. There is also the option to have a 4Kw AC diesel generator which is coupled with the inverter to allow for a high output. All areas of the vessels electrics are designed to be easily accessible and traceable with minimal disruption to the boats systems. Electrical components on the Lightwave 46 are carefully selected to ensure a minimum power consumption is achieved. Onboard systems incorporate the latest in technology, allowing remote control and monitoring of critical power systems, battery and charging status, tank levels, bilge pumps, aerial and security CCTV as well as an array of other custom options.

Engineering Systems

The Lightwave 46 offers a very spacious area in the external engine rooms, to accommodate the standard 50hp engines & other engineering systems. All steering components as well as the optional generator are housed in the engine rooms, carefully positioned for ease of access for servicing and maintenance. The engine rooms are separated from the accommodation area with a bulkhead lined in sound dampening material to defer noise, heat and odour from entering the cabins. The engine rooms are also accessible from the inside of the boat if required.

Sailing Systems

Designed with the priority for the ultimate sailing experience , t he deck layout and sail ing systems are configured for ease of handling while shorthanded. The line system on the Lightwave 4 6 has been designed so all lines are organised and accessible from an area where the sails can be easily observed. Lines all lead to the cockpit and travel under serviceable fibreglass boards which not only keep the lines organised, but also remove possible tripping hazard s . Hanging points are purposely provided creating a neat and organised place for line tails to be stored. Anderson winches and Ronstan deck gear are s uperiorly selected as standard equipment, with optional electric winches also available. A bridal main sheet system is cleverly applied to eliminate the safety concerns of a traveller car system traditionally used on catamarans.

Top 20 Boat Tests of the Year

Deep levels of design, new engines and electronics, greater innovation and integration, and increasing refinement were the drivers of new boat design in 2017.

From Sydney Harbour and Port Phillip Bay to Moreton Island and the Broadwater, from Cobourg Peninsula in the wilds of the Northern Territory to Nevada and Florida in the U.S., we’ve been busy bringing you the boating news and reviews in 2017. Here are some of the stand-out boat tests from 2017 and the more than 1800 in our archives.

At the time of writing, we had published 75 boat tests in 2017 on boatsales.com.au, six Spotlights from our various quick spins behind the wheel, and created 24 original boat-review videos from our rides and drives.

By the time 2017 comes to a close, we’ll be up around 80 published reviews. We certainly have a pile more to share with you in 2018, not least being the boat tests we have recently performed and prompt us to put pen to paper over the summer holidays.

Of course, boating by its very nature doesn’t sit still. Boats come and boats go. Trends emerge and technology shapes new designs. The outboard engine has been a big driver in 2017, with more boats flaunting 250hp-plus outboards than we've seen before.

Starting with the Quintrex 300 Wanderer cartopper punt weighing all of 46kg and costing under $3k, through the hot new Sea-Doo personal water craft, cool fishing trailerboats made of aluminium and fibreglass, even cooler wakeboats, to the incredible Riviera 68 Sports Motor Yacht with a $4.5m ticket, or the Fleming 58 for $5.375m, we’ve covered the new boat market in all its diverse glory.

Meantime, here are our top 20 boat tests from the 75-plus we performed in 2017. They run in order of size from the smallest to the biggest — they are all great boats in their own way in their respective markets.

1. Quintrex 390 Outback Explorer Quintrex has expanded its Explorer range with three great new models. Available in 3.5m, 3.7m, and 3.9m lengths, the new Outback Explorers are built around a new space-enhanced and performance-boosted F-Series of forked-bow hulls. For this review, we sampled the flagship 390 model with a 30hp electric-start, tiller-steer Evinrude E-TEC 30hp DFI two-stroke outboard and a range of options. This new $15k Quintrex 390 Outback Explorer package had more performance, storage, safety and fishing space. Full Quintrex 390 Outback Explorer review.

2. Sea-Doo GTX 230/300 Limited The Sea-Doo launch in Nevada, U.S. didn't disappoint. Sixteen fellow riders and writers straddled the saddles to put the new redefining 2018-model watercraft through their paces. The proving ground was 45 miles of at-times choppy Colorado River. The GTX Limited 300, the flagship in the new 2018 Luxury line-up, with the 300hp 1630 ACE engine, which is Sea-Doo’s most powerful powerplant ever, was a standout. There was also a GTX 230 in the Luxury family that uses the 1500 HO ACE engine released last year. 3. Quintrex 470 Stealth Hornet Quintrex heralded the release of its new Apex series models during its 2017 new product launch, but the design team from Australia’s best-known boat brand also tweaked the Quintrex Hornet range, adding three new models — the 470, 510 and 530 Stealth Hornets. We nabbed the entry 470 series model powered by the new Evinrude E-TEC 60hp H.O. outboard and came away with hooked. Full Quintrex 470 Stealth Hornet review.

4. Boston Whaler 170 Montauk Boston Whaler’s Montauk centre consoles are capable shallow-draft craft with remarkable seaworthiness, safety and stability. They are also the longest-serving models in the Whaler fleet. For its 60th anniversary celebrations in 2017, the big Brunswick brand released a new and improved 2018-model 170 Montauk. We hooked a ride of that boat after its world debut at the 50th Sydney International Boat Show. With the maximum 115hp Mercury FourStroke outboard running a heavy-duty Command Thrust gearbox, we were again reminded why these original Whalers are held in such high regard by an almost religious fan-base around the world today. 5. Surtees 575 Pro Fisher Centre Console Surtees’ mid-sized Pro Fisher centre console is an excellent cross-over ocean/bay/impoundment fishing rig with plenty of features, strong plate-alloy construction, a comfortable ride in choppy water, and excellent performance with Yamaha’s silky smooth 115hp four-stroke outboard. 6. Formosa 580 Tomahawk Offshore X Bowrider Formosa is taking versatility to the extreme with its X bowrider range. These great-looking plate-alloy boats are cleverly designed for a mix of fishing, family boating and tow-sports. The model range extends from a 5.2m to the flagship 7.4m hull size. For this review, we secured the mid-sized 580 powered by Suzuki's lightweight four cylinder DF200A. Full Formosa 580 Tomahawk Offshore X Bowrider review.

7. Quintrex 630 Freestyler The stand-out new release from Quintrex this year is surely the 630 Freestyler. Armed with the innovative new Apex series hull and a brutally fast Evinrude 175hp G2 E-TEC outboard, this wonderfully equipped sports bowrider is an absolute weapon on the water. It takes corners like it's on rails, blasts out of the hole, and smooths over heavy bay chop with ease. 8. Whittley SL20 Family trailerboat builder Whittley is famous for its comfy Cruiser range and, in more recent years, the deep-vee Sea Legend line-up for offshore boating. This new SL20 with Volvo Penta V6 sterndrive performance, is the smallest Sea Legend ever. But it’s big on features, all-weather comforts, and affordability, costing about $20k less than the SL22 on which it is based. And, as we proved on a successful mid-winter trout trip to mighty Lake Eildon, there are plenty of good fish-raising vibes. Full Whittley SL20 review.

9. MasterCraft XT22 The new XT22 looks hot, sounds loud, performs like a pro platform, and has attitude. But it’s the clever design and cutting-edge technology from a very simple dual dash user-interface that’s the big step forward for MasterCraft in 2018. 10. Cobalt 25SC bowrider Outboards have come a long way in the last four decades, during which time Cobalt has been building all sterndrive boats. But mark this turning point. With a supercharged 300hp Mercury Verado on the tail, the sharp 25SC Cobalt bowrider offers a refined ride and drive. But there are other compelling reasons you choose an outboard boat over a sterndrive. They include greater practicality, convenience, and, long term, potentially lower maintenance costs. 11. Jeanneau Merry Fisher 895 In the outboard-powered Merry Fisher range from French boat-building giant Jeanneau, the new 895 flagship with upgraded twin 200hp Mercury Verado four-cylinder outboards is a family weekender par excellence. The affordable and capable production cabin cruiser has honest values, plenty of space, amenities and comforts and broad appeal. Full Jeanneau Merry Fisher 895 review.

12. Grady-White Fisherman 236 When it comes to centre consoles, Grady-White takes some beating. The famous North Carolina fishing-boat brand has a depth of design rivalled only by the extent of the waters it can fish. With a single 300hp Yamaha V6 and 435lt of fuel, the Fisherman 236 will take you from the coast to the submarine canyons and everywhere in between. 13. Sea Ray Sundancer 320 Sea Ray went back to the drawing board to re-imagine a better sportscruiser for the way we use our boats today. The result is this Sundancer 320, one of the most exciting Sea Rays we've ever seen. There's a completely new approach to boat design, blending a sportscruiser with a bowrider, then adding a boatload of innovation to create a great weekend boat-to-go. 14. Boston Whaler 320 Vantage Softcore is the new hardcore with the Vantage dual-console crossover boats that aim to please everyone. This flagship 320 Vantage with twin 350hp Mercury Verado outboards, giving a top speed of more than 44 knots, expands the multipurpose boat’s appeal even further. 15. Back Cove 32 Pretty and purposeful, the Back Cove 32 is the latest model from the Maine-based boatbuilder. The new addition fills the niche between the 30 and the 34, but it’s more than just a stopgap. Pound for pound, this is the most refined Back Cove we’ve experienced. Along with single-engine economy and seaworthiness, plus bow and stern thrusters for dockability, comes roomy accommodation with an island berth and a split head with full shower for owners. 16. Dehler 34 Thirty years' ago, a production yacht called the Dehler 34 blazed its way onto the world yachting scene winning races and proving to be a highly successful cruiser/racer. Now there is a new Dehler 34 promising to deliver just as much dash and panache for today's racing sailor who also likes comforts and an alter-ego cruise. Full Dehler 34 review.

17. Aquila 36 Launched at the 2017 Miami Boat Show, and displayed at the 50th Sydney International Boat Show, the Aquila 36 has been designed as a luxury family weekender, offshore fishing and dive boat, cocktail cruiser or even a passenger and charter vessel. But with a comfortable seating capacity for 20 guests in the bow-to-stern seating arrangements, this is a superlative party craft and beach goer. Full Aquila 36 review.

18. Viking 37 Billfish This compact modern-classic of a game-fishing boat has timeless lines, simplicity, fishability and almost 35 knots top speed from twin 550hp Cummins QSB 6.7L engines. Although the ticket price is more than a $1 million, this is hardcore game boat with efficiency and economy to run all season long. Full Viking 37 Billfish review.

19. Fleming 58 A stunning Australian-designed Fleming from the pen of Norman Wright and Sons with the latest i6 MAN engines with Twin Disc systems. Whether one is a traditionalist or not, it is impossible to be dazzled by the engineering, the quality, the finishes and fittings, and the absolute attention to detail. Full Fleming 58 review.

20. Riviera 68 Sports Motor Yacht Riviera has long been known for its safe and seaworthy flybridge cruisers and luxurious sport yachts.
