NorthRiver Yacht Club to be sold

Buyer oversees club's golf course.

The Westervelt Co. has agreed to sell NorthRiver Yacht Club to the golf club management company that has been overseeing its operations since 2012.

The Westervelt Co.’s board of directors agreed last week to enter into an exclusive dealings contract with Honours/Troon, which has been overseeing the management of the golf course for the past four years.

In an email to members dated Sept. 2, Thomas Monk, president of the club’s board of directors, said the sale of NorthRiver Yacht Club was pending approval by the Westervelt Co.’s board of directors.

“We as a board are extremely excited about this ownership change, and confident the future of NorthRiver will now be secure for many years to come,” Monk said in the email. “This transaction will occur within the next few months and we will offer more specific information as details develop.”

Robby Johnson, marketing manager and spokesman for the Westervelt Co., said the sale of the nearly 200-acre club, which includes the tennis courts, pool and golf course, is still in the preliminary stages.

"It's very premature in the process,” he said.

However, its sale is in line with the Westervelt Co.’s decision in 2011 to rid itself of paintings and other works of art amassed by Jack Warner, the former chairman and CEO of Gulf States Paper, now known as the Westervelt Co., during his tenure.

"There are some ancillary aspects of our operation that are visually significant but not part of our business mix," Johnson said. “Our organization focuses on being stewards of the land."

The Westervelt Co. initially extended the sale of NorthRiver Yacht Club to its members, but the members turned it down.

“At the (Sept. 1 NorthRiver Yacht Club) board meeting, the Westervelt Co. invited the NRYC board to submit an offer to purchase the club from the membership,” Monk’s email said. “The board voted to decline this offer, determining the best interest for our membership is to have Honours/Troon own and continue to operate the club.

“The board believes the transition of ownership from Westervelt to Honours/Troon is most logical and will create minimal disruption of club services to the membership.”

Johnson said the transition to Honours/Troon ownership will be better for those who use NorthRiver Yacht Club for recreational purposes.

"It'll be great for the members. Their service level will not change,” Johnson said. “It's a very strategic and pragmatic type of a decision that has led us to this place."

NorthRiver Yacht Club began operations in the 1970s under the management of Gulf States Paper Co. It celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2013.

Management of the club transitioned to Honours/Troon in 2012.

Honours Golf began in Birmingham has a golf course management company in 1998.

According to the company’s website, it has since grown to oversee a number of golf courses throughout the Southeast U.S. and, in 2014, was acquired by Troon, an upscale golf course management firm operating in 30 countries and more than 35 U.S. states, according to its website.

Absolutely love NRYC! It's a band challenging course with many amenities. We love the different landscape from the front 9 to the back 9. The club also has a marina on Lake Tuscaloosa so lots to do

This place hasnt been updated since Jack Warner was 35. I went to a friends wedding and mushrooms were growing up the rotten wall. The chairs are so gaudy and gross for a wedding venue... food mediocre. Lighting always SO bright.. needs a total update/ re-do. YUCK

Mostly you will be able to hear European as well as Russian music at this club. There is a balcony which is the smoking area. After-party clubs in Moscow
