Sailing SV Delos
When Brian Trautman bought a sailboat 2008, he had never envisioned that he would be so immersed in it that it would become his home; a part and parcel of his lifestyle. More than a decade later, this sailboat has covered more than 70,000nm, visited over 46 countries, and helped in creating more than 200 YouTube videos.
As one of the original and the best sailing YouTube channels, Sailing SV Delos has become a sensation among sailors as it documents the travels and adventures of a lovely crew aboard the sailing vessel, SV Delos. The crew often includes the boat owner Brian, his brother Brady, Brian's wife Karin Syren, and crew member Alex Blue. The team also invites crew members to help with sailing, boat maintenance, cleaning, and, of course, filming.
Sailing SV Delos has always kept it real and chronicled several ocean passages including some of the most challenging and intense weather conditions such as a severe lightning storm that the crew had to deal with on their way to Madagascar.
With his experience as a former electrical engineer, Brian Trautman has been able to make several improvements to the boat to ensure that they remain environment-friendly whenever they sail. The crew has also contributed to several philanthropic activities such as giving $50,000 to charities and contributing to restoration efforts in Dominica after the island was ravaged by Hurricane Maria.

Gone with the Wynns
If you want a sailing YouTube channel that offers an unscripted tale of an eccentric couple who left their everyday life to become perpetual travelers and experience whirlwind adventures, you've come to the right place. Known as Gone with the Wynns, this sailing YouTube channel chronicles the adventures of prominent travel vloggers Jason and Nikki Wynn.
The couple started by chronicling their travel adventures by buying an RV and undertook an epic road trip in search of endless exploration across the country. They went around North America and even trekked around Alaska and admit that they'd have stayed there forever had it not for the fact that they suffer from what they term as incurable sedentary life phobia.
The couple then decided to sail around the world and have been on a sailing voyage of more than 10,000nm. The couple has always been inspired by their unparalleled desire to explore, grow, learn, and share their travel experiences. To them, sailing is far more surreal as it's almost akin to exploring the world as it was done in the 1400s.

Tula's Endless Summer
You've probably wondered whether it would be possible to bring your lovely pet to your sailing escapades. Well, a young couple known as Billy Swezey and Sierra Groth have been showing that it's possible and very inspiring thanks to their Tula's Endless Summer sailing YouTube channel.
Their sailing adventure started in 2013 when Billy bought a dilapidated boat in an abandoned boatyard in New York and set about restoring the boat. Billy, who describes himself as a water bug, then met the lovely Sierra in Florida. Since then the couple together with their dog, Jetty, have been inseparable as a Dream Team and have shown the world that taking up sailing as a lifestyle is very possible.
This lovely family has sailed in the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and other destinations on their Tula, as well as other boats. Bill describes himself as a jack of all trades who has been surfing, kiting, diving, paddling, and doing everything in the ocean. On the other hand, Sierra is a lovely girl who wishes she had the power of breathing underwater. And what about, Jetty the Gypsy? Well, this dog has seen and done a lot more than most people will ever do in their life.
In essence, Tula's Endless Summer is a superb sailing YouTube channel that vividly chronicles the life of a young and lovely couple going about their sailing escapades.

Sailing Uma
Neither Dan Deckert nor Kika Mevs grow up sailing and never dreamt of buying a sailboat just to cruise around the world. But soon after graduating, this gorgeous couple founded a successful architectural design-consulting firm as a way of earning a living. Fortunately, Dan and Kika soon realized that the rat race wasn't their cup of tea. They both had dreams of traveling the world and seeing for themselves of the earth was a beautiful place. Again, they had been inspired when a friend advised them not to buy a couch!
Having realized that the conventional life wasn't meant for them, the couple bought a sailboat named UMA even though they didn't know anything about sailboats or sailing. They had to Google their way out and restored their lovely boat to their liking. They came up with a 5-year plan to learn step by step before sailing around the world. The plan was to start with a small boat and learn how to sail on a lake before getting a vessel that they could use for their offshore adventures.
Despite the steep learning curve, this lovely couple had solutions to many problems during their sailing escapades and now is showcasing their sailing escapes in one of the best sailing YouTube channels around. So far, they've visited 22 countries, covered 18,358 nautical miles, and have incredibly used zero gallons of diesel.

Sailing Doodles
With one of the most-watched sailing YouTube channels on the internet, Bobby White and his partner Laura began their sailing escapades after Bobby suffered a medical scare in his late 30s. He was good-looking, had a flourishing career as a corporate pilot, flying the rich and famous around the world. He had suffered a stroke and his career was gone just like that!
After healing, Bobby sold everything he owned and bought a C&C 37-foot sailboat. Along with his two lovely dogs, he set sail from his native Texas to the Caribbean. He made the wise move to document his new life and that is how Sailing Doodles came to be. With his partner Laura, Bobby admits that chronicling their sailing journey on YouTube isn't as easy as many people think but it's certainly worth it to share and inspire others in a very cool way.

It takes a lot of guts to sell all your possessions and begin sailing around the world. While many couples cannot even contemplate taking such an action, it's exactly what Matt and Jessica Johnson did as soon as they realized that their life had become boring as a result of spending a lot of time in front of the TV.
But instead of taking up yoga or exercising, they decided to make a radical change by selling everything they had in their possession and began sailing around the world. Today, MJ Sailing is one of the most popular sailing YouTube Channels. This is a couple who left everything including their careers and took up a great hobby without ever regretting it.

By Editorial Team 20 September 2022
From all the must-see superyachts to the best places to party after the show, get the complete insider’s guide to the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 .
Running from 28 September to 1 October, the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 will be attracting a fleet of superyachts and thousands of attendees to the Côte d'Azur for the 31st edition of the prestigious boat show.
For four days, Port Hercules will be a hive of activity as thousands of prospective clients and industry players descend on the French Riviera to explore what’s on display on the water and along the stands. Hundreds of exhibitors will be showing off their products and services, with top shipyards , brokerage houses and marine and luxury lifestyle stalls in attendance, along with brand-new areas being unveiled at this year's show.
What’s in store at this year’s show?
This year the show will unveil its brand-new Adventure Area and Sustainability Hub, alongside its popular Design & Innovation Hub and dockside areas committed to the exhibition of superyachts and tenders.
Sustainability Hub
With a renewed focus on sustainability and environmental protection initiatives, the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 will be unveiling its brand new exhibition space dedicated to the research and development of sustainable solutions in yachting.
The Sustainability Hub will also host a variety of exhibitions relating to green renewable solutions and pro-environmental projects in yachting.
Yacht Design and Innovation Hub
Complementing the Sustainability Area will be the popular Yacht Design and Innovation Hub, where the world’s most renowned yacht designers convene to showcase their latest projects, with various presentations on design and eco-responsible projects in yachting taking place in a conference room upstairs (free access). This year, the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub also welcomes the historic exhibitors of the Designer Gallery along the Louis Chiron bend of Port Hercules.
Adventure Area
Another new zone for 2022, visitors to the Adventure Area will find a huge array of tenders, all-terrain vehicles, nautical gadgets and equipment. These will be showcased in conjunction with a wide range of activities and services targeting the up-coming generation of superyacht clientele in response to the increase in demand by discerning yacht travellers seeking ever-more thrilling adventures and unique yachting experiences.
Dockside Area
The new Adventure Area will be located within the Dockside Area, home to the afloat exhibition of motor yachts and tenders on the Quai Antoine 1er, Port Hercule.
Please note that the Dockside area is only accessible to Discover, Sapphire and press passes on Wednesday September 28, with access to the general public from Thursday onwards.
Sailing Yacht Area
As in previous years, this area will be situated along the Quai l’Hirondelle, where visitors will be able to step aboard some of the most innovative and technologically advanced sailing yachts in the world, as well as meeting some of the esteemed builders and designers who help to create the magic.
Sapphire Experience
Introduced for the first time last year, the Sapphire Experience is a bespoke tour program for visitors interested in renting or buying a yacht, with a concierge team dedicated to creating a bespoke program of events tailored to take advantage of all there is to experience at the show in true VIP fashion; including scheduled visits on board yachts, attendance at gala evenings or private cocktails on board various luxury vessels. There is also an official Sapphire tender and courtesy car service.
In addition, there are dedicated VIP entrances and lounges for convenience and relaxation throughout the show.
How to get around the Monaco Yacht Show 2022
The show takes place entirely in Port Hercules, but there will also be a number of yachts available for viewing at anchor outside the port. A water taxi is available throughout the show, with seven pick-up and drop-off points conveniently located across the marina.
The official opening times for the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show are: 10.30am-6.30pm every day, except on Saturday when the doors open at 10am and close at 6pm.
What is the official MYS 2022 superyacht lineup?
Currently, with over 130 yachts set to attend this year’s show, including 74 yachts making their debuts in Monaco, the show promises plenty of standout vessels available to view.
One of the most exciting new yachts will be Lurssen’s 115m/378ft motor yacht AHPO . A recent addition to the charter fleet, she will be drawing in plenty of attention with her Nuvolari Lenard exterior styling and palatial interiors.
On the same dock, Golden Yacht’s latest offering in the shape of 88m (289ft) superyacht Project X will also be causing a buzz. Freshly delivered, show-goers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to step on board to admire her beautiful Massari-designed interiors, as well as her 7.5-meter by 3-meter glass-enclosed swimming pool on her aft main deck and vast beach club featuring comfortable lounging area and bar, alongside a wellness suite with Hammam and Finnish Sauna.
Another star of the show will be the 85m (279ft) luxury explorer yacht VICTORIOUS , who wowed visitors last year with her distinctive sleek lines culminating in a 2-meter bowsprit and impressive array of charter-rich features and family-friendly amenities, not to mention the luxury Rolls Royce perched on her helideck bow!
The 75m (247ft) superyacht KENSHÕ will also be making waves for those keen to experience her zen-calm interiors up-close. Launched earlier this year, the innovative vessel redefines the concept of space and layout, providing guests with the ultimate luxurious platform to relax, entertain and socialize onboard.

Monaco itself has no shortage of restaurants to suit every occasion and palate during the show. For something more casual, Rue Princesse Caroline is lined with different restaurants that are well-suited to a light bite.
In the evenings, COYA Monte Carlo is where the in-crowd head for Latin-American fusion and a warm reception. The cocktail menu is expansive, so be sure to try one of their specialties and soak up the buzzy vibes as the evening wears on.
If it’s a sophisticated meal you’re after, Nobu is the ultimate choice. Expect a luxurious backdrop, a refined Japanese menu and a sensational taste experience among fellow show-goers.
Where to party after the Monaco Yacht Show 2022
As ever, Buddha-Bar will be one of the most popular venues for post-show partying in Monaco. The restaurant-bar crossover is a regular stop-off for those looking to dine and dance to the soundtrack of live DJ sets.
Twiga has a similar vibe, with a stellar menu coupled with an unrivalled club scene later in the evenings. Expect Methusalems of champagne topped with sparklers, dazzling entertainment and a no-holds-barred party vibe.
Twiga will be hosting plenty of Monaco Yacht Show-themed parties over the course of the show, so you’d be remiss not to pay the venue a visit, even if it’s just for a cocktail on the terrace.
For a true taste of French Riviera party life, look no further than Jimmy’z. This iconic club will be in full swing over the course of the Monaco Yacht Show, and will be amping up the entertainment with live performances from dance troupes and deck-spinning DJs.
Where to relax after the Monaco Yacht Show 2022
After the show, take the time to unwind and soak up the last of the Mediterranean sun.
Nikki Beach Monte Carlo is still going strong on the roof of the Fairmont Hotel, and offers poolside lounging and a summery soundtrack throughout the day, offset by spectacular views over Port Hercules and the yachts at anchor opposite the marina.
A little outside Monaco in the small town of Eze lies one of the best-kept secrets in the South of France. Anjuna Plage occupies a thin sliver of beach, and boasts a premier restaurant, boutique shop and a laid-back vibe that makes it a fan favourite. Best accessed by yacht, it also has a roster of A-list clientele.
Where to visit after the Monaco Yacht Show 2022
The French Riviera is one of the most beautiful regions in the Mediterranean and has no end of things to see and do. In Monaco, visitors can explore the decadent Monte Carlo casino, browse the Private Collection of Antique Cars of H.S.H. Prince Rainier III or admire the incredible selection of marine life at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco.
Afterwards, stop by neighbouring Menton to visit Mirazur, a restaurant that was named the Best in the World for 2019. Then, pay a visit to the Val Rahmen Exotic Gardens for an afternoon of botanical bliss.
Head over to Nice for a day of sightseeing and walking the cobbled streets of the city, taking the time to explore the famous Matisse Museum and the pink palace of Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild.
Those looking to travel even further afield can stop by the spa at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes or take a boat ride out to the Lérins Islands outside the bay of Cannes , where you will find the famous Abbey and the superyacht hotspot of La Guerite, a beach club and restaurant on the island.

A Look at the Various Types of Yachts
Yachts are a lifestyle of luxury and leisure that many individuals aspire to, as they can be used for relaxation and fun. There are numerous types of yachts to choose from depending on intended purpose, size, and budget. From the classic look of sailing yachts to the speed and power of motor yachts, each type has its own advantages and disadvantages.
- Sailing yachts come in various sizes, shapes, and design aesthetics. Depending on the particular need of the owner, there are daysailers, offshore cruisers, racing yachts, and performance cruisers that can be considered. With advancements in technology, sailing yachts have become more and more efficient, allowing for longer voyages at greater speeds. The major drawbacks are that sailing yachts require more crew and must be able to handle choppy waters for extended periods of time.
- Motor yachts offer more convenience and are often faster than sailing yachts. They are most commonly purchased for luxury cruises, as they often come with a variety of amenities, such as bars, hot tubs, and entertainment systems. Like sailing yachts, motor yachts come in various sizes and designs, ranging from smaller powerboats to full-size luxury vessels. The major downside to purchasing motor yachts is that they require more fuel which can be costly. Additionally, they do not stand up to choppy waters as well as sailing yachts.
When it comes to purchasing a yacht, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. It is important to research and consider the various types available to find the right fit. Both sailing and motor yachts are desirable options, depending on the individual's needs and budget. Taking the time to look into the various features of each kind of yacht can help buyers make the best decision for their particular needs.
Cruising the Seas Aboard a Yacht
Yachting is a luxurious way to explore the seas. A modern yacht is the perfect way to fuse the freedom of cruising the seas with the comfort and glamour of a luxury vessel in one. Although expensive, the enjoyment of traveling on a yacht is more than worth it for the lifestyle plus the waterside views that it gives.
Today, yachting has become more accessible than ever before. With a fraction of the cost of owning and maintaining a yacht, you can use a wide variety of luxurious services and amenities to suit your preferences. From top-of-the-line food to spectacular sightseeing and water sports activities, you can easily create the perfect yachting experience for yourself and your guests. Yachting also brings with it the unique added bonus of providing a more truly private and customizable experience, as compared to a cruise liner.
No matter what type of experience you are looking for, whether it's a romantic getaway or a family adventure, cruising through the seas aboard a yacht is a great way to make the most of it. The comfort of a home away from home and the exquisite luxury of the yacht will let you feel like royalty as you explore the beautiful sights of the oceans. Not only do you have the ability to view pristine seascapes, but you also have the opportunity to make new friends, as well as make your time aboard that much more enjoyable. So if you're ready to enjoy the adventures of the seas, look no further than a yacht charter. You won't be disappointed.

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show.
Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero , the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.
There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north.
Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.
Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.
Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’
The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.
Ocean Alexander Puro 35P
Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests.
Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.
Feadship ‘Olympus’
Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.
Benetti ‘Triumph’
Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.
Fjord 39 XP/XL
Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.
Turquoise ‘Talisman C’
Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million.
Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’
Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.
Bahama 41 GT2
As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.
Heesen ‘Book Ends’
Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.

Hallberg Rassy are known for being heavy, sturdy, seaworthy boats. This video shows Hallberg Rassy 48 Elysium in heavy weather off Cape Gris Nez, northern France in 2014. The yacht seems to be handling well, able to use a Raymarine lineair 7000 autopilot depsite the conditions.
This compilation is from the BT Global Challenge round the world race, a crewed race westabout the prevailing winds in one-design steel 72-footers. It took amateur crews upwind through the Southern Ocean from Cape Horn to New Zealand and from Australia to Cape Town. This footage shows some of the weather they experienced and what the crews endured – and watch out for some footage of the race leaders fighting it out under trysail during a severe storm in the Cook Strait in New Zealand.

At least 69 Rohingya refugees rescued after boat capsizes off Indonesia
Those rescued include 42 men, 18 women and nine children after boat capsized off the coast of Indonesia’s Aceh province.
Medan, Indonesia – At least 69 Rohingya refugees have been rescued after a wooden boat with an estimated 150 people on board capsized off the coast of Indonesia’s Aceh province.
The Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS Aceh) said on Thursday that 42 men, 18 women and nine children had been brought to port.

Un seeking more than $850m for rohingya refugees, dozens of rohingya refugees flee malaysian immigration detention centre, unhcr: 569 rohingya died at sea in 2023, highest in nine years, fire at rohingya refugee camp leaves thousands homeless again.
But dozens more are feared to have drowned after the boat ran into trouble some 19km (12 miles) from the beach of Kuala Bubon on the west coast of Aceh on Wednesday morning.
Earlier, six people – four women and two men – were rescued from the boat by Acehnese fishermen and taken to a shelter, where they were able to speak to Faisal Rahman, a representative from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
Rahman said the survivors’ testimony suggested many had drowned.
“We can’t confirm the exact number of casualties, but according to information from the six who were rescued, there are many dead,” he told Al Jazeera. “They assume about 50 people died when the boat capsized.”
It is thought that most of those presumed to have died were unable to swim, and carried out to sea by the currents.
Amateur footage shot by local fishermen at the scene, which has been widely shared on Indonesian social media, showed survivors standing on the boat’s upturned hull.
They mostly appeared to be male.
Emaciated and dressed in shorts, T-shirts and singlets they waved at the fishermen and begged to be rescued.
Amiruddin, a fishing community leader in the Aceh Barat district where Kuala Bubon is located, said a search and rescue boat from Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency had been dispatched on Wednesday.
It is unclear why the boat sank, although wooden boats carrying refugees from the camps in Bangladesh are often in poor condition and overcrowded, with only basic facilities on board.
In August 2023, 17 Rohingya refugees died when their boat sank in the Bay of Bengal.
UNHCR’s Rahman said the rescue agency had been unable to find the exact location of the boat on Wednesday night.
‘Humanity cannot wait’
Azharul Husna, the coordinator of KontraS Aceh, questioned why a rescue boat needed to be sent from Banda Aceh, some 223km (138 miles) away from Kuala Bubon, when the rescue agency had other boats in the vicinity.

[ Translation: Aceh fishermen help Rohingya refugees whose boat capsized, about seven miles from Kuala Bubon, West Aceh on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.]
Husna said rescuing the refugees as soon as possible was crucial and that it was the responsibility of the Indonesian authorities.
“Humanity cannot wait and this is a life or death situation,” she said. “According to the Indonesian presidential decree of 2016, refugees who are found at sea have to be rescued.”
She added that residents of Kuala Bubon had gone to the town’s port overnight, and called for the refugees to be refused the right to land.
Some held banners calling for a “boycott” of the Rohingya, who are fleeing decades of persecution in their native Myanmar that exploded into a brutal military crackdown in western Rakhine state in 2017.
Some one million Rohingya have been living in overcrowded camps in Bangladesh ever since, while the situation in Myanmar has deteriorated further since the February 2021 military coup, prompting many refugees to seek safety elsewhere.
In recent years, however, people in Aceh have become increasingly resistant to the Rohingya who are usually trying to reach Malaysia, which had 108,500 registered Rohingya refugees at the end of February, according to the UNHCR.
In December last year, the Indonesian navy pushed back a boat carrying Rohingya refugees as it approached the coast of Aceh, amid resentment among residents at a perceived sudden increase in boat arrivals.
Also in December, a mob of students stormed the basement of a local community hall in Banda Aceh where about 137 Rohingya were taking shelter, and called for the group to be deported.
Indonesia is not a signatory to the 1951 UN Convention on Refugees but was once considered to be more sympathetic to the Rohingya, compared with other countries in the region such as Malaysia or Thailand, where authorities have prevented boats from landing in previous years.
However, in recent years, this sympathy appears to have evaporated, with some Acehnese residents claiming, with little evidence, that the Rohingya receive more resources from aid agencies than residents and engage in criminal activity while in Indonesia. Similar claims have been made by some in Malaysia, also without evidence.
