Boris Bakija (owner of the BALK company and captain of Adriatic King) is an engineering technician by profession, but seaman and captain by passion. He has earned certification to captain ships up to 500 brt.
Boris’s sea adventure began in 1989 when he went tuna fishing in the Pacific Ocean and spent the next 9 years at sea. Upon his return home, he started a new venture and began growing his own fleet of fishing ships. By 2015, he had 3.
In 2015, Boris and his business partner bought a small cruise ship, Adriatic Queen, which they still own. In 2017, he decided it was time to say farewell to his fishing boats and he sold them. He bought another small cruise ship, Equator, which sailed for his company BALK during the seasons 2017, 2018 and 2019.
At the end of season 2019, he sold Equator and began another era in his sea adventure. He started the construction of the new pearl in his crown, a new ship called Adriatic King which sailed for the first time on June 26th, 2021.
Boris always includes his family in his businesses. The company name, BALK, represents the initials of the Bakija family: Boris, Anita, Lovre and Katarina.

City Tours along the Croatia Coast
Embarking on a luxury ship charter along the Croatia coast offers a unique opportunity to explore some of the country’s most captivating cities. From the historic center of Southern Croatia in Split to the charming town of Trogir, each destination has something special to offer. Your clients can enjoy a city-walking tour in Hvar, known for its magnificent masterpiece of natural and human creation, or head to Sibenik and Krka Waterfalls to witness the stunning countryside. Select a destination below for more information to tailor your clients’ luxury cruise to their interests.
Below, we will highlight the must-see attractions in each city, providing inspiration and options for travelers seeking to explore the beauty of Croatia’s coast.
Located on a picturesque peninsula surrounded by the shimmering Adriatic, ancient settlements, and the gentle slopes of Kozjak and Mosor, Split is located at the historical, industrial, and geographical center of Southern Croatia. Its crown jewel is the palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian, built in the 4th century. Who would have ever guessed that it would become such an important site today, drawing visitors from around the globe? Split presents a rare convergence of Roman and Christian civilization and art. You can visit antique cellars that offer a glimpse into life in the palace in ancient times; the Cathedral, thought to be the oldest in the world, built on the remains of an early shrine; the Temple of Jupiter; and the Peristyle, the central square of the imperial complex. A pleasant stroll through the Roman streets Decumanus and Cardo to the famous Golden Gate will reveal the appearance of aristocratic palaces and medieval squares, as well as the ambiance of today’s Split, full of fine restaurants and shops. A visit to the gallery of our world-famous sculptor Ivan Mestrovic will reveal more of Split’s art, culture, and grace.
The charming town on the western coast of Kaštela Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized as an architectural masterpiece by our ancestors. A Greek settlement named Tragurion in the 3rd century BC became an important port during Roman times, located on a small island squeezed in between the mainland and the larger island of Čiovo. Today, Trogir is connected to the mainland by a bridge. Except for the green parks, the entire island is covered with spectacular structures: faded stone houses, palaces, churches, monasteries, towers, walls, etc. The cobbled streets are narrow, and they truly give a feeling of how life might have been in ancient times. You will see the main attraction in Trogir – the Cathedral of St. Lawrence. This 13th-century structure is probably the finest example of sacred architecture in Croatia. Its unusual construction with three naves and three semi-circular apses dominates the entire town. The main portal is world-famous, carved by the local artist Radovan in the 13th century. Other fine buildings to be visited are the Town Loggia decorated with stone carvings, including one by the great Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović; the Town Hall; and the Ćipiko Palace. The whole town is an open-air museum, so just taking a stroll through its winding streets will be an unforgettable experience.
Šibenik & Krka National Park
The Krka River is one of the most amazing rivers in the Croatian karst, and two out of the seven Croatian National Parks are a gift from Krka. On its way to the sea, it forms a chain of lakes, rapids, and waterfalls.
The first stop on this excursion is Šibenik, one of the oldest and most important Croatian towns, infused with the tradition of diving, coral fishing, and fishing. The drive there affords spectacular views of the islands and islets of the Šibenik Archipelago. Streets, stairs, squares, and narrow passageways are part of the open-air International Children’s Festival, unique in the world, which takes place every summer in Šibenik. You will visit one of Dalmatia’s most valuable religious monuments, the 15th-century St. James’s Cathedral, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and other renowned attractions. After the city tour and some leisure time, you will continue through the karst hinterland of Šibenik to the famous Krka Waterfalls. In Skradin, a small town located inside Krka National Park, you will enjoy breathtaking natural beauty by small boat and visit the largest limestone bedrock in Europe – Skradinski Buk. The falls cascade over 17 natural barriers, and this permanent play of the sun and water creates an astonishing scene. There will be ample time here for exploring and taking photographs of the stunning countryside.
Hvar is one of the sunniest and most beautiful of Croatia’s thousand-plus islands, a stunning masterpiece of nature and human creation. Situated at the crossroads of ancient nautical routes, Hvar is a cradle of history and culture. Its long coastline, mild climate, and numerous islands and islets make Hvar a true Dalmatian gem.
The town of Hvar bears the marks of centuries of human existence, but its special charm comes from the Renaissance period. Looking at Hvar from the seaside reveals the seven-hundred-year-old city walls, a promenade with palm trees, and a Venetian piazza built in the 16th century. The tour starts with a walk along stone streets to the 15th-century Franciscan Monastery where you will visit the impressive Renaissance cloister, the old refectory that today houses a collection of lace, manuscripts and books, and the church with its remarkable paintings. The guide then leads you to the main square to visit the Cathedral of St. Stephen, its treasury, and the bell tower with its distinctive Venetian mark. The next stop on your route is the Arsenal, an imposing building built in 1611. Inside, you will find Europe’s oldest community theatre established in 1612. After the guided tour, you can explore the town that has inspired many poets, writers, and painters on your own, try numerous specialties of Dalmatian cuisine, or swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea.
The town of Zadar is one of the oldest towns on the Dalmatian coast. It maintained its independence for a long time before the crusaders destroyed it and delivered it into the hands of the Venetian Republic. Although it was challenging to live there amid the turmoil of ever-changing domination, today we are left with an impressive Old Town, architecturally influenced by both Croatians and Venetians. We will visit the Old Town, including the Church of St. Donat, the Cathedral dedicated to St. Anastasia, and the permanent exhibition of gold and silver sacral art. We will also view the Sea Gate, Land Gate, City Wall, and the Square of Five Wells from the outside. After the walking tour of Zadar, guests will have the opportunity to explore the city on their own before returning to the ship.
Dubrovnik is a stunning city with a glorious past. In the 16th century, the city developed its merchant fleet and became one of the strongest merchant city-states. The small, but powerful state called Dubrovnik Republic maintained its independence for 450 years.
Explore the Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is entirely surrounded by mighty walls and fortresses that are in impeccable condition. Our walking tour takes you through the elegant main street, Stradun, revealing amazing sights such as Onofrio’s Fountains, the Franciscan monastery with the old pharmacy, Orlando’s Column, the church of St. Blaise, the town’s patron saint, the main Cathedral, and more.
Experience the history and culture of Dubrovnik’s magnificent walled city by strolling around its narrow streets on this two-hour walking tour with a local guide. Starting at Pile Gate, you’ll walk along the elegant main street and visit the city’s most important sights. The tour begins with Onofrio’s Fountain, a circular fountain connected to a spring 7.5 miles (12 km) from town via an aqueduct. Next, visit the Franciscan Monastery, home to a restored sculpture of the Pieta and a stunning cloister dating back to the 14th century. The tour continues with a visit to Dubrovnik’s Renaissance highlight, the Sponza Palace, which now houses the State Archives. Other tour highlights include Orlando’s Column, the City Bell Tower, the Rector’s Palace, and the Church of St. Blaise. The tour concludes with a visit to Dubrovnik’s baroque Cathedral of the Assumption, built in the 18th century after an earthquake destroyed the original one, located in the main square.
Pelješac Peninsula Wine Tour
Half-Day Tour – Picturesque Landscape and Wine Tasting
Viticulture and winemaking are centuries-old traditions on the Pelješac Peninsula and a source of income for most of its inhabitants. Take a scenic drive across the Pelješac Peninsula and learn about the original way of planting grapes to grow on sunny slopes of waving hills. Enjoy tasting Croatian wines produced in local wineries, as well as other delicious local products. On this journey, we will also visit The House of Wine Tradition, a charming little wine museum where you will see and learn more about the Dalmatian viticulture and winemaking tradition. Our wine tasting will take us on a long, nine-glass journey that will include some top-quality Croatian wines made from indigenous grape varieties, in particular, “plavac mali,” cultivated exclusively in this part of the Mediterranean.
The Island of Mljet is located near the Pelješac peninsula, which is part of the southern section of the Dalmatian Coast. Known as Croatia’s greenest and one of the largest islands, Mljet harbors a diverse range of Mediterranean vegetation, Aleppo Pine forests, as well as several paved foot and bike paths, and a variety of hiking trails.
Mljet National Park comprises the top third of the island. Here, the primary natural attractions are the two saltwater lakes, Veliko Jezero (Big Lake or Great Lake), and Malo Jazero (Small Lake), together covering approximately 4 square kilometers. Additionally, within Veliko Jezero, visitors will find a small island called Sveta Marija or Islet Melita, which contains a lovely 12th-century former Benedictine monastery called Crkva Sveta Marije. Below is a map that you’ll find near the entrance to the park depicting the entire park, with well-marked biking and hiking trails.

My 5 Days On A Luxury Super Yacht — What I Loved, And My One Regret
- Cruises and Sailing
- Destinations
- Types of Travel
Imagine this: a bespoke holiday experience set in one of the world’s most beautiful locations, where you, your family, and your friends can literally choose your own adventure. From cuisine to cocktails, kicking back to adventuring, you set the rules. An entire crew will be at your service at all times to manage every aspect of your dream vacation, and no ask is too big — or too small.
That’s the experience I had on the gorgeous Adriatic Sea. I was invited to spend 5 days on board the Ohana , a $3 million super yacht based in Croatia available for private charter. The exclusive experience isn’t just for the jet set anymore; turns out this sort of vacation is actually more attainable than ever. Here are my top takeaways about the luxe travel option, and why it might just be the perfect way to celebrate your next big special event!
Destination: Dalmatian Coast
With more than a thousand miles of coastline, the pristine Dinaric Alps, hundreds of islands, and sparkling-clear water, Croatia’s natural beauty is immediately evident. Throw in a temperate climate, loads of culture and history tucked into picture-perfect towns, and some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met on my travels, and it’s not hard to see what makes this Balkan nation so very special.
However, it’s no longer the hidden-gem destination it was a dozen years ago. The jet-set and celebs routinely charter mega yachts on the beautiful Dalmatian Coast, and during my visit, locals described to me how summers often turn the otherwise idyllic islands into a frenzied free-for-all.
I was lucky enough to visit during shoulder season. The summer crowds had dissipated, the vibe was laid-back, and the weather was still warm. A super-yacht cruise was the perfect way to explore the beautiful country.
The Small-Ship Experience
While I’ve cruised before, it has been on far larger ships; hitting the open sea on a yacht accommodating just 35 guests was a new experience. I was invited aboard Ohana by Goolets , a charter company based in neighboring Slovenia. The Goolets staff (the name is a wink to the gulet , a traditional wooden sailing vessel) works with each client individually to assess their interests and preferences. They then recommend a yacht from their preferred fleet and take it from there. From building out the menu and bar to arranging activities, itineraries, and transfers, it all adds up to a customized, picture-perfect vacation.
“Attention to detail is what makes the difference,” Goolets founder Mitja Mirtič explained. “When demands are made, they are expected to be fulfilled in an ‘over-the-top’ fashion. There is no room for mistakes.”
Upon embarking, I immediately felt at ease. The small but attentive crew warmly welcomed me with cocktails as my luggage was whisked away to my cabin. I met our stewards, deckhands, captain, and chefs; explored the 160-foot yacht; and settled into what would be my home for the next 5 days.
While I had a general sense of the itinerary, I’d not visited Croatia before, so my approach was simple: embrace it all!
From Culture Vulture To Water Baby
We left the gorgeous port city of Split and headed to three islands: first Brač and Hvar, then Korčula. Each was quite different; all were stunning and historic. While on Brač, I was able to stroll down to the famous horn-shaped Zlatni Rat and sunned on the pebbled, pristine beach. I wandered the town of Bol and sampled some lovely Croatian vintages at Stina Winery . On Hvar, I hiked up its historic fort and marveled at centuries-old churches, squares, and the historic Palace Elisabeth — named for the Hapsburg empress who donated money for the original building that was once a spa.
Korčula’s walled city was an absolute gem, with its cobblestone streets, chapels, city museum, and belltower with an extraordinary view. As we headed back north, Makarska and Omiš were also explore-worthy stops. With Venetian, Ottoman, and Hapsburg influences all still felt in Croatia, there was plenty to experience at every port of call.
We also had time to enjoy the Adriatic, with swim stops each day. There were water toys — from inflatables and paddleboards to kayaks and even a wave runner. When I was ready to warm up, the upper deck hot tub fit the bill. And of course, the crew had guests covered with snacks, beverages, and extra towels.
The private charter experience allowed me to have the best of both worlds: I was able to learn about the history and culture of Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast while also kicking back and enjoying the sun and water. It was perfect, thanks to the careful planning of the staff and crew.
A Warm, Family Feel
When I mentioned my upcoming Croatia adventure to friends, many jokingly asked if I’d be sailing on a disgraced oligarch’s super yacht.
In a word, nope. As it turns out, Ohana is a family affair.
The Croatian tradition of sailing has been strong for generations. And with the destination now teeming with tourists, those traditions are more important than ever. Case in point: Ohana ’s captain Josip Šerka also owns the super yacht. The pride he took in her — and his crew’s performance — was evident. The level of service I experienced on board wasn’t fussy or too formal. Rather, it was comprehensive and comfortable.
“These ships are not only large and super spacious with perfect services,” Mirtič told me. “They also have souls, and you can almost feel the energy and effort that was built into them.”
That soul was evident after dinner one evening. Captain Josip presented one of the youngest members of our sailing group with a cake, blazing with birthday candles. It was a sweet way to go the extra mile.
Not Exactly Below Deck — And That’s A Good Thing!
Many of us are familiar with the reality show Below Deck . The hit Bravo TV series takes viewers inside all of the behind-the-scenes angst involved with a yacht charter from the crew’s perspective. I watched a few episodes, with dread, prior to my trip. The last thing I wanted was drama of any sort.
Thankfully, there was none to be had.
Captain Josip admitted there have been a few eyebrow-raising requests of Ohana ’s crew in past sailings, but he explained each was handled discreetly, effectively, and to the guests’ satisfaction. I’m glad our sailing group was more interested in kicking back than being obnoxious and making ridiculous requests.
A Bit Too Spoiled
During our 5 days at sea, I ate every meal on board, with local seafood, hand-crafted pastas, and beautiful Croatian wine complimenting each dish. It was all delicious, but quite filling. However, Ohana didn’t have a gym on board, which meant no running. First-world problem? Absolutely, but I did miss getting my miles in!
That situation is now remedied. Ohana recently received a glow-up with extensive renovations recommended by Goolets. Lower-deck cabins were converted to add a theater and a children’s playroom, and an outdoor gym space was built for guests to now work off those incredible meals.
My One Regret
Ohana set sail from Split and I booked two extra nights there prior to boarding the yacht so I could get to know the city. The islands we visited were gorgeous as well. The only thing missing? Dubrovnik, the gem widely considered one of the most gorgeous towns on the Dalmatian Coast.
In a typical charter experience, this wouldn’t have been an issue. It could have been mentioned to the crew and a stop there would have been scheduled. However, I’m still kicking myself for not factoring in more time to visit on my own. It was poor planning on my part; certainly not the fault of my gracious hosts.
On the bright side, it gives me the perfect reason to return to Croatia!
You Don’t Have To Be A Multi-Millionaire To Vacation Like This
Chartering the Ohana starts at about $100,000. That includes a mandatory advance provisioning allowance covering food, drink, and port taxes.
Crunch the numbers and this exclusive travel experience is now within reach. After her refit, Ohana will sleep 30 people. That’s on par, per person, with a week-long cruise on leading lines… one where you don’t get to choose your own adventure with your family or closest friends.
The vessels in Goolet’s fleet aren’t billionaire’s boats. You won’t find helipads, beach clubs, or huge swimming pools on board. But their super yachts are a lovely and affordable option absolutely worth considering for a big birthday, anniversary, or other special events (especially if you want to celebrate in one of the most gorgeous corners of the planet).
The hybrid approach — balancing between traveling on a super yacht and being mindful of budget — has proved to be a popular one. Mirtič says interest in Ohana bookings remains high.
“Do the ships have the same ‘glitz’ as mega yachts that charter for [around $819,000] a week? Of course not,” he says. “Are people willing to pay [around $102,400] to charter a 50-meter, 10-plus-cabin vessel with super-yacht services? Heck yes!”

Walking Distance:
To fully enjoy your vacation, you should be in good physical health and understand there are times when a good deal of walking is involved in our tours. Those who have difficulty walking may not want to take this trip or should discuss their personal situation with their doctor before deciding. You should be able to walk at a steady pace for a mile at a time for a daily total of three to four miles per day and be able to manage steps to board/de-board the motorcoach several times a day. In addition, many US and European airports require lengthy walks to get from ticketing counters to your departure gate. Due to the lack of proper facilities at some of the farms, ranches, and off-the-beaten-path sites we often visit, we are unable to accommodate walkers and wheelchairs.
We are finding that larger European cities are closing their historic districts to motor traffic. This, of course, adds to the amount of walking involved when visiting a city (sometimes on uneven and/or cobblestone walkways). In addition, you should know that you may be required to exit the motorcoach at each stop because local law often does not allow travelers to remain on the motorcoach while it is parked for a scheduled stop.
