Byc sunkist series.

The Sunkist Series, hosted by the Balboa Yacht Club ,  includes one-design racing for Inside Classes on four Saturdays and PHRF and one-design racing for Outside Classes on four Sundays spanning a four-month (Nov. – Feb.) period. The Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Regatta is a fundraising event that uses the November Sunkist Series races to provide an opportunity to compete for additional awards and contribute to CHOC.

These events are open to members in good standing of clubs or organizations affiliated with Southern California Yachting Association (SCYA) or any national authority associated with the sport of sailboat racing.  There is no fee for entering the one-design races.

The racing area is primarily inside Newport Harbor with races starting and finishing at the BYC Race Tower. Sunkist Series awards will be presented on the final day of the series with “daily” awards presented at the conclusion of each racing day.

Sunday found local sailing enthusiasts vying for bragging rights in the 85th annual Flight of Newport Beach, but one did not need to be a sailor to appreciate the stirring vision as the race got underway on the south side of Balboa Island.

”You’ll never see that many sailboats on a start line at the same time,” said David Beek, race chairman. “They all line up and want to be the first one across the start line.”

Beek’s father, Balboa Island resident Seymour Beek, began racing in the event in 1941 when it was Flight of the Snowbirds. He was 7 years old and captured the award for the youngest skipper.

Today at 88 he continues to enjoy sailing and seeing familiar faces competing next to him in his Laser named Big Jim.

Over the years, the senior Beek has not only competed in a variety of sailing races but has also served as principal race officer for the Flight of Newport Beach.

“This event is a single race spectacle, the only one of its kind,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun for a lot of people and as a yacht race shouldn’t be taken too seriously.”

Flight of Newport Beach race chairman David Beek keeps watch on the Sunday race from his boat. With him is Bronny Daniels.

Irvine resident Rich Luttrell, who has been racing Lasers for 25 years competed this year with his wife, Karen for the first-place “Married Couple” award. He agrees the event is all in fun.

“Twenty percent of the people are out there to win a race,” Luttrell said. “But with so many boats, most people are trying to either beat the boat ahead or stay in front of the boat behind.”

The event is the longest running continuous race in Newport Harbor. Sponsored by the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce, Commodores Club, and hosted by the Balboa Yacht Club, Beek explained that the event is free and open to all ages.

“Along with the no age limit and free to enter, there is no yacht club affiliation,” he said. “A lot of kids come out and sail without experience. We encourage everyone to come out.”

Sailing his Laser, Big Jim, Seymour Beek, 88, competes in Flight of Newport Beach sailboat race on Sunday.

The race continues to evolve by keeping current with vessel changes.

The premier race started as the Flight of the Snowbirds in 1936 and became one of the largest small sailboat races in the world, with 200 boats entered at its height of popularity in 1950.

A Snowbird is a small wooden boat class with an 11-foot hull and was once the most popular boat in Newport Beach.

In the early 1970s the race became Flight of the Kites, an American recreational sailing dinghy with wooden mast and a fiberglass hull that was nearly a foot longer than the Snowbird.

In 1979 the race then became the Flight of the Lasers. The Laser boat is constructed of fiberglass and was built with an emphasis on simplicity and performance.

It has become one of the most popular dinghy classes in the history of competitive racing. The lightweight Laser is 13.9 feet and can accommodate two sailors.

Today the race is called the Flight of Newport Beach, officially named by the Commodores Club in 2019. With the trend for better and faster boats there are 100-plus boats in three different classes, Harbor-20, Lasers and a new class of high performance, O’pen Skiff.

With the addition of Harbor 20-boat type, a 20-foot-long, 900-pound contemporary daysailer that can hold up to eight people.

The 9-foot-long O’pen Skiff, with a self draining hull of polyethylene, attracts younger sailors and can hold a couple of people.

Jane Hoffner Horst, Merry Cheers and Susan Jennings compete for the Balboa Yacht Club.

Newport Beach resident Jane Hoffner Horst and her all-female team raced a Harbor-20 boat. Although Horst has been racing for about 40 years, mostly in Long Beach, this was only her second time entering the Flight of Newport Beach.

Horst, a member of the Balboa Yacht Club, coaches an H-20 sailing clinic for women at the club on Monday nights.

“It’s a really fun regatta” she said. “It’s basically a tour of the Newport Harbor, while mixing it up with a lot of different boats.”

2024 California Dreamin’ Series

Published on December 19th, 2023 by Assoc Editor -->

High-level match racing in 2024 kicks off in late January with the California Dreamin’ Series, including stops at San Diego Yacht Club, St. Francis Yacht Club, Long Beach Yacht Club and, due to heavy demand for match racing on the West Coast, Balboa Yacht Club has joined the series. Racing will be held in J/22s in San Diego and San Francisco, in Catalina 37s at Long Beach and in GovCup 21s at Balboa.

To win the series, a skipper would count their best three scores, though to win the coveted invitation to Ficker Cup 2025, one of those scores must include the Long Beach stop to demonstrate prowess in the bigger boats.

Racing dates and locations are: San Diego Yacht Club – J/22s – January 27-28, 2024 Balboa Yacht Club – GovCup 21s – February 18-19, 2024 St. Francis Yacht Club – J/22s – March 16-17, 2024 Long Beach Yacht Club – Catalina 37s – April 6-7, 2024

Balboa Yacht Club begins acceptance of Requests for Invitation for 56th Governor’s Cup

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Wednesday, February 8, 2023

Governor’s Cup will be July 24-29; World Youth Match Racing Champion commits to attend; World’s other top match race skippers under 23 invited to apply

NEWPORT BEACH, CA (Wednesday, February 8, 2023) Balboa Yacht Club has posted all the information necessary for requesting an invitation (“RFI”) to the 56th Governor’s Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship, July 24-29, 2023. Information is found on the event website (www.govcupracing.com) under “Race Documents.”

Governor’s Cup 2021 winner and reigning Youth Match Racing World Champion, the host club’s Jeffrey Petersen will be back to try to get his second GovCup, after a runner-up finish to New Zealand’s Jordan Stevenson last year. Petersen, now ranked 6th in the World Open Match Racing rankings, which is not age-limited, is one of a contingent of young U.S. Match Racing skippers and teams who have emerged in recent years to challenge the international teams that have won seven of the last ten “GovCups.” A rivalry has developed between Petersen and Jack Egan of San Diego (3rd last year) and continued to the U.S. Intercollegiate Match Racing Champion, where Egan defeated Petersen to win his second straight championship. BYC hopes that rivalry continues this year.

Also, a possible entry will be Sweden’s Marius Westerlind, who made quite an impression in the Cup last year after his runner-up finish in the Youth MR World Champion behind Petersen. He lost to Egan and ended up in 4th place in 2022, but his “learning curve” from his 12th place finish in 2021 was truly remarkable. His sense of humor was also obvious at the Cup. When asked if his dad was coming to watch as he did in 2021, Westerlind said, “No, he made other plans because he didn’t realize I had gotten good!”

The Governor’s Cup is presented by Disc Sports & Spine Center and is an invitational event for sailors that have not reached their 23rd birthday by the last day of the regatta. It is the world’s oldest international youth match racing regatta and “alumni” have competed in, and won the America’s Cup, the Congressional Cup, Olympic medals, the World Match Racing Tour Championship, and perhaps surprisingly given the difference in the sport’s disciplines, the Round the World Race (now known as the “Ocean Race”).

“Last year felt more like a typical Governor’s Cup with concerns about COVID somewhat lower, allowing international travel again,” said Christine Gribben, Chair of the event. “This year should again be great and our committee and BYC can hardly wait.”

The event will be a “Grade 3” event, but after the selection of teams, the Club may reapply for retroactive regrading if the quality of the sailors continues to be excellent. Grading of events by World Sailing is based primarily on the “Open” (non-age-limited) rankings of the skippers. In 2018, the Governor’s Cup was retroactively regraded to Grade 1, the first youth match racing regatta to achieve that level, normally reserved for events with mostly or all professional sailors.

The Cup is sailed in identical “Governor’s Cup 22” sloops provided to the competitors by the Newport Balboa Sailing & Seamanship Association and BYC. They were designed by famed yacht designer and BYC Staff Commodore, Alan Andrews, and feature fractional rigs, flat top mains, and masthead spinnakers. They have proved perfectly suited for racing in wind speeds of as little as 4-5 knots, but also perform well and are exciting to sail in the 18-20 knot conditions prevalent in the 2021 Cup.

Grunion sports, grunion sports | on the water: alamitos bay yacht club’s youth sailing program aims to welcome all, the club’s sailing director, carter brock, has an impressive resume.

balboa yacht club racing

The goal of the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club’s youth sailing program is to develop crews that are comfortable in and on the water, which can be a challenge for many. Luckily, the club is headed by a man who knows the struggle.

The club’s sailing director, Carter Brock, has an impressive resume. He was on his high school sailing team and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University, where he was on the sailing team.

He also served as the weekend dockmaster and assistant sailing coach at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and for six years he taught at the Casino, a yacht club in North Haven, Maine. The Casino is home to the North Haven Dinghy, the oldest racing class in America, founded in 1887. So, he knows a thing or two about dinghy sailing.

On keelboats, he will be racing in the California Dreamin’ series this weekend, April 6-7, as a part of skipper Nick Kofski’s crew – who he raced on board with for Butler Cup.

Reading Brock’s resume, you would think that he was never less than comfortable on the water, but that isn’t true.

When he was about 8 years old, his father took him out on a Laser, and the unsteadiness of the small boat “freaked” him out, he said

“I just wasn’t ready for it and I didn’t get on a dinghy again until seventh grade,” Brock said in a phone interview.

In his second on-the-water experience, he said he capsized right away but was able to swim around and right the boat. Once he realized capsizing was not the horror he thought it would be – and the fix was easy – he said he became passionate about the sport.

Now, he says he wants to help everyone feel comfortable sailing and is appreciative that Alamitos Bay YC’s summer program is open to non-members, with needs-based scholarships available through the Alamitos Bay Sailing Foundation.

“Non-members are always welcome to our sailing programs, for both youths and adults, and sailing is a sport that everyone should be welcome to learn,” Alamitos Bay YC Commodore Gabe Ferramola wrote in a text. “It’s a wonderful sport that one can enjoy the environment while learning about physics, weather, responsibilities, problem solving, independence, teamwork and much more.”

This first class in the program is for sailors looking to start their sailing journey. The reliable sail cube boat will help young sailors develop their independence and confidence in Alamitos Bay. The class stresses safe habits around the water and fun drills.

Over the two-week sessions, students will have plenty of time to get comfortable in the boats, learn new skills and make lifelong friendships.

“Participants learn to rig their own sailboat, sail on their own, and eventually participate in a race,” Brock said. “They also learn how wind, weather and current work. Sailors will learn to sail in Alamitos Bay in ‘sail cubes,’ a plastic version of the Optimist.”

The classes run Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and cost $800 per session.

The program runs four two-week sessions: Session 1: June 17 through June 28; Session 2: July 1 through July 12; Session 3: July 15 through July 26; Session 4: July 29 through August 9. There are no classes on June 21, July 4 and July 19.

“Cube sailors will graduate to the Optimist or the Naples Sabot, both one-person boats for children younger than 15,” Brock said. “Classes will also be offered in the Club Flying Junior, a two-person boat for teens, and the Laser, a one-person boat for teens.”

Boats and equipment are provided for all classes, although students are welcome to bring their own. For details, visit ABYC.org.

California Dreamin’

This weekend, April 6-7, Long Beach Yacht Club is hosting the fourth and final stop of the California Dreamin’ Series (CDS). It will be raced in the Long Beach Sailing Foundation’s Catalina 37s.

The first three match-racing regattas were held at San Diego Yacht Club from Jan. 27 to 28 in J/22 type boats, Balboa Yacht Club from Feb. 17 to 18 in GovCup 21 type boats and St. Francis YC from March 16 to 17 in J/22 type boats.

The skipper with the highest series score will be declared the winner of the CDS, and the LBYC stop must be counted as one of the scored events if the skipper wishes to receive an invitation to Ficker Cup 2025.

This means that the winner of CDS might not necessarily receive an invitation to Ficker Cup, because it will only go to the highest scoring skipper who included LBYC in their series points.

St. Francis Yacht Club’s Nicole Breault took top honors in the 2023 CDS, and as a result, earned her 2024 Ficker Cup berth. The top three finishers in the 2024 Ficker Cup will earn berths in the 2024 Congressional Cup.

We welcome members of most recognized yacht clubs to our Clubhouse facilities. We have an excellent Galley and very friendly Burgee Bar. We are closed on Monday and Tuesday, and open on Wednesday through Sunday with lunch and dinner served every day. Breakfast is served on Saturdays and Sundays. Please contact the BYC Front Office to inquire about reciprocity privileges with your yacht club.   All Letters of Introductions must be sent to [email protected]. Because of the limited amount of moorage in our area, we can only offer this part of our facility to members of other clubs that also have such accommodations, i.e. moorage available to our members while cruising in your area.  West coast yacht clubs to which we offer reciprocal privileges are listed below. If your yacht club is not on this list, please give us a call to see if reciprocal privileges are extended to your club. Please be prepared to show your current membership card upon arrival to BYC.
