Nautor Swan 112 RS, PAULINE AF SKANOR
Nautor Swan, Nautor Swan 112 RS Built 2003 / €3,400,000, VAT paid
Broker’s Comments
PAULINE AF SKANOR is the 5th Swan 112 launched in 2003. She was built for a Greek owner and initially named “Manouella” and sailed in the Mediterranean. She was sold (we believe in 2006) to a South American owner and renamed “Naiade”. The vessel was sailed to and then based in Mexico for a while. During both ownerships she saw generally light use.
This said the vessel was significantly damaged in Mexico and so in 2014 she was shipped to Palma de Mallorca for repairs. Nautor’s Swan was retained to provide engineering expertise through all repairs and the surveyor firm Patton Marine Inc. employed to also follow all work. From March 2015 through summer 2016, the yacht was rebuilt substantially to include structural laminate work to the hull as well as every system being renewed or refitted. The result was a virtually new yacht, with a Nautor´s stamp of approval for the structural work. It can be argued that PAULINE is now in better than new condition as more modern better materials and methods were used during the works.
She has been continually maintained and updated. Most recent work in 2023 included all new service batteries with an increased Amp-Hours, plus new water heaters and a full overhaul to the Magnus shore power transformer.
The current owners purchased the yacht in late 2017 in Mallorca and renamed her PAULINE af SKANOR. They are experienced yacht owners and had previously owned four Nautor´s Swans (43, 47, 65 and 76) that they refitted.
PAULINE benefits from a classic, well balanced and voluminous layout for 6 guests aft and up to 6 crew forward. The interior is in remarkably good condition reflecting her light use over the last years. She is finished in the finest Burmese teak, hand rubbed and varnished which has been sparingly used and well maintained since launching. No artwork or attachments in the wood. High quality fittings and marbles throughout. The interior décor and finish are classically nautical and elegant.

Owner’s Comments
In 2017 we started to look for the next boat to buy. We always knew she would be another Swan. Having initially looked at smaller models such as the 82 and 86, we visited the Palma show in 2017 where we found Naiade (as was her name then). Two sister yachts were also at the show, but for us Naiade stood out as she was just about to complete a very full refit / rebuild and her condition was close to exemplary. She also stood out as the most appealing in terms of layout and interior design. The process to decide, and finalise her purchase took some time, but she became ours and was renamed PAULINE late in the year.
Our adventure with PAULINE was then to begin. Following our purchase, we sailed the yacht to Malta for importation. Later sailing on to Croatia (Sibenik) where she spent the winter. Summer 2018 was spent cruising Croatia and in the autumn sailing through the Med and out to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. We sailed a little in the Atlantic around the Canary Islands and in April 2019 to Cascais, Portugal.
In the summer of 2019, we made a most memorable trip to Sweden (including our “home port” of Skanor) and up to the north of Norway and the Lofoten Islands. It was a fantastic experience. In September we sailed south again to Portugal (our new home since December 2019).
Unfortunately, with the Covid pandemic and health issues we were unable to sail in 2020 (but did live on board for many months). 2021 was similarly affected, but finally in October PAULINE was able to sail away west, once again to Las Palmas – and this time on to the Caribbean. She sailed with the ARC to St Lucia (fourth crossing the finishing line and first 70+ skipper) and thereafter cruised the Caribbean islands (including Martinique, Antigua, Saint Kitts, Saint Barth, Saint Martin, and US Virgin Islands – our favorite was the British Virgin Islands) until sailing back to Cascais in May 2022.
During the summer of 2022 we again spent substantial and a very enjoyable time aboard with family and friends, cruising the Mediterranean (visiting Mallorca, Portofino, Amalfi coast, the Aeolian Islands, Sicily, and Malta amongst others). Generally, we preferred to be at anchor rather than in a marina. In total, we believe we have enjoyed sailing PAULINE some 21,000 miles from December 2017 to the end of 2022.
PAULINE has spent winter 2022-23 in Cascais. We live close by and are often aboard and have overseen some service works preparing her for the coming season.
PAULINE has made a lifetime dream come true of owning a Blue Water sailing yacht, capable of crossing all the oceans and exploring the whole world from the sea – in a safe and comfortable manner. However, life has brought us some new challenges and we are now focusing on a more land based project which we are passionate about.
Thus, we have decided to sell PAULINE and to allow a new owner to take her on further and even greater adventures.

In Maine, Tell Them Pauline Sent You
By Carol Carter
- May 12, 1991
EMBARKING passengers quickly got a feel for the relaxed atmosphere aboard the motor yacht Pauline one Sunday afternoon last summer as they stepped from wharf to ship and Capt. Jonathan Bacon Smith, dressed in baggy khaki pants and a Pauline T-shirt, cautioned, "Watch the varnish." He was toting his 15-month-old daughter aboard for a brief visit with Dad.
The Pauline, an 83-foot-long wooden boat new to the Maine tourist industry, was a well-known sardine carrier in the waters near Rockland for 40 years. Recently redesigned to carry 12 passengers, the Pauline first cruised the waters of Penobscot Bay for hire in 1989.
During her 1990 season, she traveled each week from Memorial Day through the fall color season. With the exception of a few three-day weekends, the Pauline's routine was to depart Rockland Harbor Monday morning and return the following Saturday morning.
On my cruise last summer, passengers boarded after 4 P.M. on Sunday and slept on board that first night. No meal was served until blueberry pancakes just before departure on Monday.
As they boarded, passengers had their first glimpse of the Pauline's hospitality. On one of the two mahogany dining room tables, just outside the gallery, were a pitcher of lemonade, a loaf of blueberry bread and a basket of fruit.
The simple elegance of that edible still life accurately depicted life aboard the Pauline. She appeared to be the epitome of gentility with her fresh flowers, mahogany walls, damask sofa and crewel pillows, yet she stopped short of pretentiousness.
Captain Smith often went barefoot on this July cruise -- even at mealtime. The personality of the Pauline closely reflected the personality of this seasoned seaman who sometimes read poetry to his passengers and whose contentment factor seemed to rise in direct proportion to his distance from civilization.
A typical day on the Pauline started early. As passengers began emerging from their staterooms below -- usually anytime after 6 -- members of the five-person crew already were busy polishing brass or washing the decks.
The chef, Tom Bean, whose experience includes the Four Seasons in New York, served coffee on the fantail starting at 7. Breakfast was at 8. On the morning after a New England boiled dinner, breakfast was corned beef hash. Two days after a lobster bake on Orono Island, it was lobster souffle.
One day it was oatmeal with homemade granola, than granola muffins. On the morning one passenger (a college administrator) caught eight mackerel before breakfast, the chef served them with the eggs.
Soon after breakfast each morning, crew members solicited the aid of passengers in pulling up anchor and the Pauline took off. Shortly, smells of the next meal started wafting from the kitchen.
Passengers always tried to guess what was for lunch or dinner, but the mess cook kept them in suspense, apparently sworn to secrecy.
One thing passengers learned to count on early in the week was that they could expect homemade yeast bread at both lunch and dinner.
The chef's breads would rate four stars in any situation, but passengers were even more amazed at his skill with dough when they realized that the Pauline rocked constantly and that he cooked on a cast-iron diesel stove, built in 1916 and used for four decades on board the original Pauline.
To get his bread to come out right, Mr. Bean constantly moved it around the oven because, he guessed, the temperature on the left side was around 400 degrees; on the right, around 350.
The technology gap never stopped him from turning out perfect scones for afternoon tea (served most days at 4 on the fantail) or great soups, chowders, fishes and vegetables.
Meals were superb and not too filling, though one would never guess that walking around the Pauline an hour after lunch each day. Nearly all the passengers were strewn about in horizontal positions, snoozing, open books across their chests.
Those afternoon naps probably best illustrated the pace of living aboard the Pauline. It was slow, very slow. It was quiet, very quiet. On this trip, which the crew dubbed the Southern Cruise because of the three couples from Atlanta and the one North-Carolinian-cum-Texan on board, the seven (five passengers short of capacity) continually amazed themselves with how much they could sleep.
EACH morning at coffee, at least one passenger remarked that there would be no nap today and each afternoon that promise became a lie. Then, at dinner, all proclaimed their intentions to stay up late for a game of cards, but 9:30 or 10 P.M. always found somebody climbing down the ladder to bed.
While one crew member insisted that once when she cruised on the Pauline as a passenger she held a party in her stateroom, one has to wonder if she didn't dream it. The staterooms are small.
Each of the six rooms slept two people in bunks, one hung above and slightly stepped back from the other one. The person in the top bunk had to step on the bottom bunk to get into bed.
There was a reading light above each bunk and a net strung on the wall next to each, a good place for storing bedtime books and eyeglasses.
The cabins each contained a closet; it's best to travel light for a week aboard the Pauline. In the space, roughly 5 by 2 by 2, there was one hanging rack with a shelf above it and two shelves below.
Two steps across the floor from the closet was a small sink with a cupboard below and a shelf, maybe 14 inches long, above it. That was all.
Two steps across the hall was the head, with a toilet, shower and another sink. Each three staterooms (three fore and three aft) shared a head. The crew had its own in the forecastle.
In his welcoming chat, the captain explained the importance of taking so-called Navy showers. That is, turn on the water and get wet, turn it off and lather up, turn it back on and rinse off. End of shower.
WHILE it's true that, by the end of a week, most people were tired of conserving water, the showers remained one of the major draws of the Pauline over the many schooners sailing in and around Rockland Harbor.
The Texan on board, an educational-book salesman, had spent the week before on the schooner Stephen Taber and reminded fellow passengers that, on the Taber, showers came every other day, when the sailing vessel pulled into a port with public showers. The other nice thing about the Pauline's showers was that the water was hot, as long as everybody practiced conservation.
The heads worked well, too, but required a little work on the part of the user involving opening and closing a valve and pumping via a button on the wall. More modest travelers should know that the "thawooga" noise of the head diminished any hope of complete privacy.
The bath and bed facilities, though small, were fine for a week because little time was spent below. Daylight found passengers up on the boat deck near the pilot house (the favorite spot of the female half of a husband-wife office design team), sprawled in deck chairs, visiting with the captain (he invited passengers to take a turn at the helm) or standing at a railing gazing out to sea.
Out to sea was where Captain Smith liked to be, which was no surprise considering his background. He has sailed on naval destroyers, research vessels, fishing trawlers, passenger liners, square-riggers, sloops and schooners. He has served as a Navy officer, a fisherman and Caribbean yacht skipper.
On this cruise, he decided the passengers were hardy enough to withstand the elements, so he went way out to Matinicus Rock, approximately 25 miles from Rockland Harbor (and sent passengers scurrying for motion-sickness medicine, though not one person got sick during the entire cruise).
The Pauline anchored that night at nearby Matinicus Island, where a few passengers rowed ashore in one of the Pauline's pea pods (dinghies so named because that's how they are shaped). Since they went ashore after 4, the island's one store was closed, but they walked to Tuckanuck Lodge, an old house that serves as an inn, and toured a bit inside though no one ever showed up to greet them.
Likewise with the island's 30 to 40 year-round residents. The passengers saw, maybe, three or four people while they were ashore.
Another night, Captain Smith moored off Little Cranberry Island, arriving 10 minutes before the one general store in the town of Isleford closed. A gift shop, art gallery and weaver's studio stayed open past their 4 o'clock closing times to greet late-arriving boats. A couple of crew members went back to a harborside bar after the passengers had turned in.
Therein was a message for party animals. The Pauline, at least on this cruise, was not a party boat. The most raucous thing to occur during the southern cruise was an interminably long game of Uno one night.
But even this mellow group had enough of sea swells and animal life after four days to convince Captain Smith to make an unplanned stop on Mount Desert Island one lunchtime. He obliged and the economy of Northeast Harbor benefited.
THAT stopover exemplified the philosophy on board the Pauline. Early in the cruise, Captain Smith tried to get an idea of what the passengers wanted to do, then adjusted the already loose schedule accordingly. Whenever a change of plans was in the offing, he gathered the passengers on the fantail and took a vote.
This particular cruise was billed as a Puffin Cruise, so a visit to Eastern Egg Rock was mandatory. The local affiliate of the National Audubon Society has been working to reintroduce the orange-beaked birds there. And the puffins cooperated.
The first sighting was of a lone puffin in flight off Eastern Egg, the only one spotted there, though Captain Smith says Audubon has lured 8 to 10 pairs to the rock in recent years.
The puffin bonanza came at Matinicus Rock, where a flotilla of at least 30 swam right in front of the Pauline. Even the crew couldn't contain its excitement.
Guests should bring binoculars for such moments, along with a mixture of sweatshirts and T-shirts, shorts, jeans and jackets. The weather changed rapidly in July and often put passengers in shorts at breakfast and sweats at dinner.
What didn't change were the sea birds, constant companions of the Pauline during this trip of 200 nautical miles. It became commonplace to watch a cormorant flying by with a fish in its mouth or to sit lazily on the fantail and watch one of the shags appear and disappear as it dove and fished nearby.
One day brought an unexpected gift when a passenger sighted whales near Seal Island. The captain stopped the Pauline for 30 minutes while minke whales swam port, starboard and off the bow.DOWN TO THE BAYGetting There
Rockland, Me., home port of the Pauline, sits on Route 1, eight miles south of Camden and 90 miles north of Portland. Air passengers may fly into Boston, Portland or Bangor and drive to Rockland. From Boston, Rockland is a four-hour drive up Interstate 95, then Route 1, just north of Freeport.
From Portland, the drive takes just less than two hours; from Bangor, an hour and a half. Also there is a small airport a few miles away at Owls Head. Bus transportation is available from Boston and Portland.
Rates and Information
The Pauline docks at the Windjammer Wharf in downtown Rockland. Free parking is available at the wharf for Pauline passengers. Crew members are on hand to help with luggage. Be sure to bring small, soft-sided luggage for easy stowing in the cabin.
This year's rates will be around $900 for a week, $425 to $475 for three days. The season will start on Memorial Day and continue through Oct. 15.
The Pauline is not geared for children and the staff requires the minimum age of 14 unless passengers charter the entire boat.
Wine, generally a medium-priced California, is served with dinner and set-ups, but not spirits, are provided for the evening cocktail hour. Beyond that, passengers are welcome to bring their own.
Capt. J.B. Smith, The Pauline, Windjammer Wharf, Post Office Box 1050, Rockland, Me. 04841, (800) 999-7352. -- C. C.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic
The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.
The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.
The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.
The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.
For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP
!{Model.Description}
The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.
The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.
The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.
Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
