What Is An ETO & Why Is This Role Increasingly Essential?

Do we need one on a superyacht?

eto jobs yacht

What is an ETO on a Superyacht?

ETO stands for Electro Technical Officer ; many larger yachts have a full-time ETO. There is an official maritime certificate of competency as ETO, recognised by the International Maritime Organisation. On a merchant ship, this person would maintain the radios and the radars, the computer networks, and the navigation systems. They might also work as an electrician and perhaps, on vessels driven by battery power, as a High Voltage electrician. So, is this what they do on superyachts? The short answer is no! Although this person might be called the ‘ETO’ they may well not hold a merchant Navy CoC and the job description could be very different. In fact, on superyachts the role is sometimes described as ‘AV/IT Officer’; this gives a clue to the distinct function of this job in yachting.

What Does an ETO do?

Merchant ships have plenty of technology to keep the ETO busy, but a modern superyacht has cutting-edge technology at the very beating heart of its operation: drawing the curtains, turning on lights, listening to music and watching TV might all be provided by an iPad and an interconnecting web of electronic systems. Many of the tasks undertaken by superyacht technicians are not taught in ETO training which is why there are very few such ETOs working in yachts. They are usually considered part of the engineering department and report to the Chief Engineer.

Why is the Role of ETO Becoming More Important?

Even 15 years ago most yachts did not carry an electronics specialist, only the very largest which had early AV systems and huge satellite TV dishes. Back in those days, even large yachts had cupboards full of DVDs and CDs, usually with a folder containing a neatly typed catalogue to choose from. The main challenge was to keep the discs in the correct boxes and in the right place on the shelf!  The Captain and the Chief Engineer between them could stay across all the technology onboard. What has happened in the intervening years is a gradual explosion of tech. Due to the proliferation of Wi-Fi at sea, 3G, 4G and then 5G mobile data networks, low earth orbit communication satellites, iPads and other tablets, and smartphones….  the pace of change is accelerating. Guests now use tablets to lower the blinds, turn off the lights and choose a movie; or maybe choose from their Spotify playlist in the gym.  At the same time, the crew are using them to log planned maintenance or to make safety reports. Technical managers can now sit in offices in Monaco or London and monitor the performance of the engines, check fuel levels and have video meetings with crew members.

What qualifications does an ETO require?

Now here lies an interesting challenge: we have already seen that the Merchant Navy “ETO’ certificate does not cover the skills required in a superyacht. So how do they get trained? Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to that! This is quite a challenge: one of the newest and most important functions within the crew of a professional yacht has no structured training at all. Those with the merchant navy certificate are allowed by law to title themselves as “ETO” but have to educate themselves in the many facets of the job for which they have not been trained. Others might have been working as, perhaps, network engineers in a bank or installation technicians in a shipyard; they too will be responsible for the gaps in their knowledge and skills. Some crew start as deckhands with a keen interest in technology and train themselves until they convince someone to employ them in technical roles. For sure, there are plenty of courses out there; companies like Microsoft and Apple have well-regarded courses leading to widely recognised qualifications, but what level do we need? Some of them are entry-level and others very advanced indeed. How does a non-specialist captain or yacht manager know the difference? There are plenty of manufacturer’s courses out there but, again, are they relevant? It is probably true to say that most yachts will not know whether their new electronic technician is any good until something needs fixing (probably in the middle of a charter!). There is also an issue with the majority of yachts that do not carry a specialist. There are now 55m yachts with AV/IT officers on rotation, but it is certainly true to say that most yachts do not carry a specialist. Is there a training mission for all deck, interior and engineering crew?

General training for all crew?

Several international maritime conventions that affect yachts have consequences here. The STCW Convention now requires the crew to be trained in cyber security, but most flag states have yet to define this training and it has been left to management companies to interpret the requirement themselves. The European GDPR convention (General Data Protection Regulations) also imposes requirements on yachts and management companies: both of these have become a rich seam of revenue for consultants selling advice.

Superyacht technical companies, both manufacturers and installers, are regularly heard complaining about the level of technical general knowledge of yacht crew. Sometimes engineers are sent to visit yachts for problems that could have been diagnosed over the phone or by email had the crew had some basic knowledge and technical language to be able to communicate the issue. Sometimes a reading of the instruction manual is all that is needed!

What is the solution?

At last year’s Superyacht Technology Conference in Barcelona (October in the World Trade Centre) this whole question was discussed. John Wyborn (Head of Bluewater’s Training Division and current MYBA President) presented an initiative supported by MYBA, the PYA and IAMI (an association of maritime training providers) and the Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss). A working group comprising yacht training providers, yacht technology manufacturers and installers and association representatives have been working over the last 18 months to create a definition of what tech skills are needed by the crew on a yacht and by the electrotechnical specialist. The new training standard was launched as a consultation document at the show. For more information click here.

“The MCA and other flag states, quite correctly, are only concerned with safety. They are not concerned about levels of service or performance. This is a rare example of our industry pulling together to set its own standards. It is a clear sign of how we are maturing as a maritime sector. It’s very exciting” John Wyborn. MYBA PRESIDENT. • By Praneet Mehta
  • October 28, 2023

What is an Electro-Technical Officer (ETO)?

An Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) onboard a ship is an electrical and electronic expert responsible for keeping the ship’s technology and equipment running smoothly. They take care of everything from lights and communication systems to the ship’s engine control systems.

ETOs ensure that all the electrical and electronic systems are in working order and can fix any problems that arise while the ship is at sea.

ETO has a crucial role in maintaining the ship’s safety, navigation, and overall functionality, making them an essential part of the crew, and ensuring the ship runs smoothly during its journey.

Why ETO job the most challenging role onboard a ship?

The ETO job is considered one of the most challenging roles onboard a ship because ETOs are expected to have extensive knowledge and expertise across the entire spectrum of electronic and electrical systems.

Broad Knowledge Across the Vessel

  • One of the reasons why the role of an Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) is considered one of the most demanding on a ship is the sheer breadth of their responsibilities.
  • ETOs are expected to possess a comprehensive understanding of all electronic and electrical systems onboard. This encompasses everything from the top of the bridge’s Monkey Island to the bottom of the ship’s bilge.
  • ETOs are responsible for ensuring that every piece of electronic equipment, from the bridge to the ship’s deepest compartments, functions flawlessly. Their comprehensive understanding of these systems is crucial for the ship’s operation, safety, and navigation.

ETO must be well knowledgeable in the intricate workings of an array of electronic equipment, making them the ship’s electronic “go-to” experts.

  • ETOs often find themselves in situations where even engineers depend on their insights and problem-solving skills. This demanding and important role highlights why ETOs are among the most knowledgeable and indispensable individuals on a ship.

Qualities of an Electro-Technical Officer (ETO)

An Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) on a ship is much more than just a technically skilled individual. While fitness, knowledge, friendliness, and cooperation are important qualities, the multifaceted nature of their role demands a broader range of attributes to excel in their profession.

Technical Expertise

  • A strong grasp of electrical and electronic systems is essential for Electro-Technical Officers (ETOs) in the maritime sector. ETOs are responsible for maintaining a wide range of electrical and electronic equipment on ships, such as power systems, navigation gear, communication tools, and safety devices.
  • Their primary task involves identifying and resolving technical issues that may occur during a voyage. They need to quickly and effectively diagnose and fix electrical and electronic problems to ensure the ship’s safety and functionality, as well as the well-being of the crew and passengers. In the maritime world, ETOs are critical professionals, ensuring that the ship runs smoothly and safely.

Problem-Solving Skills

  • Electro-Technical Officers (ETOs) frequently confront intricate technical challenges, demanding their adept problem-solving and decision-making skills. These challenges may encompass a broad spectrum of electrical and electronic systems aboard ships, each with its own unique set of intricacies.
  • ETOs play a vital role in maintaining the ship’s electrical and electronic equipment. When confronted with technical problems, they must employ their expert knowledge and analytical capabilities to swiftly identify the root causes of these issues. This typically involves a systematic approach to troubleshooting, utilizing diagnostic tools, schematics, and an in-depth understanding of the systems in question.
  • Once the problems are pinpointed, ETOs must make well-informed decisions regarding repair or maintenance procedures. They consider factors like safety, operational efficiency, and the potential impact on voyage schedules. Their choices often have significant repercussions, making it crucial for them to possess both theoretical and hands-on expertise.

In essence, ETOs are indispensable professionals in the maritime industry, and their ability to navigate complex technical challenges through effective problem-solving and decision-making is vital to the safe and efficient operation of ships.

Teamwork and Collaboration with Smile

  • An Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) works in isolation within the maritime context. Collaborative teamwork and efficient communication with both the ship’s crew and fellow officers stand as core pillars for ensuring the seamless operation of the vessel.
  • ETOs frequently assume leadership roles and collaborate with teams during repair and maintenance tasks. This highlights the significance of their strong teamwork and leadership skills, which are considered invaluable assets in their professional toolkit.
  • Within the complex and dynamic maritime environment, an ETO’s ability to coordinate with others, convey technical information effectively, and lead groups toward successful equipment repairs or maintenance procedures significantly contribute to the ship’s overall functionality, safety, and operational efficiency. These qualities underscore the pivotal role ETOs play in the maritime world.

Physical Fitness: Prepared for All Corners of the Ship

  • Physical fitness constitutes an essential attribute for Electro-Technical Officers (ETOs) in the maritime profession. Being physically fit is pivotal for their capacity to work efficiently in diverse sections of the ship, including confined and hard-to-reach spaces.
  • ETOs often find themselves navigating through tight and challenging areas, where agility and stamina are essential. These areas may house critical electrical and electronic systems that require maintenance, repairs, and inspection s. ETOs must move swiftly and safely, often carrying tools and equipment, which necessitates physical strength and dexterity.
  • The physical fitness of ETOs significantly enhances their ability to conduct their duties effectively. It not only supports their own safety but also contributes to the overall operational efficiency and safety of the ship. Being in good physical condition is an integral part of their professional readiness in the maritime industry.

Continuous Learning: Keeping Pace with Advancements

  • In the world of technology, things are always changing, and this is true for the maritime industry too. People like Electro-Technical Officers (ETOs) need to keep learning to stay up-to-date with the newest electronic technology, safety rules, and maritime laws.
  • Learning is something ETOs have to do throughout their careers. They must always be ready to adapt and improve their knowledge and skills because technology on ships keeps getting more advanced. By doing this, they can effectively and safely manage the ship’s electrical and electronic systems, making sure everything runs smoothly and safely. In the changing world of maritime technology, ETOs staying updated is really important for them to do their jobs well.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the role of an ETO is undoubtedly one of the most demanding onboard a ship. Their responsibilities extend to every electronic aspect of the vessel, and their expertise is often sought by engineers, emphasizing their crucial role in ensuring the ship’s safety, navigation, and overall functionality.

Due to their crucial role onboard they are paid handsomly. Want to know more about the ETO Salary | CLICK HERE

KHALILAH Yacht – The Incredible $30,000,000 Superyacht

Measuring a length of 48 meters KHALILAH yacht was built by the US shipyard Palmer Johnson in 2015 and is currently available for charter.

She has space for eleven guests in five cabins and is easily recognizable due to her golden finish.

KHALILAH yacht interior

All design stages, including the interior of the KHALILAH yacht, were completed by Palmer Johnson Yachts.

There are five cabins on board that can accommodate up to eleven guests. The KHALILAH yacht has twin master suites, one VIP cabin, and one double cabin, as well as a twin and an additional Pullman berth.

Nine crew members find space in cabins below deck. The KHALILAH yacht is often described as a family-friendly yacht with a lot of features that are adjusted to children including her unusual interior design.

In addition to her wide selection of water toys, families will appreciate the cabin layout and the onboard jacuzzi.

The beach club is perfect for a quick swim before a delicious dinner prepared by the five-star chef on board KHALILAH.

The yacht has impressive underwater lighting, wifi, and an upscale entertainment system. The interior of the KHALILAH yacht was designed to be tasteful and contemporary.

The style is somewhat eccentric in places, with colorful patterns and unusual features like a squid-shaped lamp in the main salon.

This is yet another aspect in which KHALILAH is an excellent yacht for families and not a conventional charter vessel.

camera shot khalilah angle

Palmer Johnson gave her a unique interior to set KHALILAH apart from other superyachts and to match her already prominent exterior.

The furnishings of the yacht also have a distinct south-east Asian influence, with several buddha statues spread throughout the vessel.

Several cabins have intricate wood carvings decorating the walls, and there are traditional decorations and murals to be found onboard the luxury yacht.

Most notably, one of the bathrooms is entirely decorated with a colorful mosaic depicting cartoon-like sea animals, which is sure to be popular among children spending time aboard the KHALILAH yacht.

Other bathrooms are more minimalistic with white marble finishes and discreet mosaics of trees and other natural scenes.

Specifications

The KHALILA yacht is 48 meters (157.6 ft) long with an 11-meter (36.1 ft) beam and a 2.1-meter (6.11 ft) draft.

She is considered the world’s first all-carbon superyacht and is especially environmentally friendly with reduced emissions and exceptional fuel efficiency.

Both her hull and superstructure are built out of carbon, making her a lightweight vessel at only 485 tons.

She is powered by twin MTU engines which allow her to reach impressive speeds of up to 30 knots.

She comfortably cruises at 28 knots, making her one of the faster yachts in her size category.

Due to her highly efficient engines, she still has a range of 1,500 nautical miles and is the perfect yacht for visiting destinations in shallow waters due to her low draft.

The KHALILAH yacht is one of the most striking superyachts in the world and is guaranteed to draw attention wherever she goes with her pearlescent gold finish.

She is accompanied by a matching 6.8-meter (22 ft) gold tender, and her aerodynamic design gives her a sleek and elegant appearance.

On the aft, the yacht has a spacious swimming platform and storage area for water toys with an adjacent seating area with a beach club.

With her many floor-to-ceiling windows and large decks, KHALILAH perfectly merges indoor and outdoor living and provides guests with many choices for relaxing and enjoying the views.

One of her more unusual features is the custom extendable staircase that can be used to board guests and extend onto the water if requested as an unconventional seating area.

The exterior of the KHALILAH yacht was designed by Palmer Johnson Yachts , which is also the shipyard where the vessel was constructed. As a charter yacht, Khalilah has a fantastic selection of water toys on board to entertain her guests. There are jet skis, water skis, kayaks, paddleboards, and inflatables, all stored aft of the vessel.

The adjacent deck is exceptionally large and measures over 110 square feet giving guests plenty of space for sunbathing or exercising.

khalilah tender behind

The KHALILAH yacht has an estimated price of US $30 million. She generates annual running costs of approximately US $1 to $3 million.

Khalilah is available for charter at a weekly price of US $225,000 per week during both the winter and summer seasons. She is based in the Mediterranean and is primarily available for charter there. Khalilah is also available for sale at a listing price of US $28,5 million, although it is unclear whether a buyer has already been found.

Khalilah Superyacht

One of the most striking superyachts sailing the Seven Seas has just gone up for sale. Khalilah and her luxe gold exterior have been turning heads since 2015 and now the showstopper could now be yours for a cool $31 million.

But it’s more than shine and dynamic lines that render this vessel worthy of eight figures; Khalilah is a straight-up history maker. The 160-foot cruiser was the first all-carbon superyacht ever built.

The handiwork of Palmer Johnson , the yacht’s carbon composite construction and revolutionary wave-penetrating hull means she can cruise at high speeds—26 knots being the top—with optimal fuel consumption. Moreover, there’s no need for zero speed stabilizers thanks to her 35-foot beam.

Onboard, Khalilah can accommodate up to 11 gilded guests within five well-appointed staterooms. The suitably opulent master suites are situated on the main deck and feature full-length windows that afford panoramic vistas. Elsewhere on this level is a generously sized living space and salon featuring a contemporary LED light installation, an ultra-modern galley, an alfresco dining area—complete with a bespoke cactus wood dining table—and vast aft deck.

Set on the upper deck is the hip skylounge. Perfect for after-hours socializing, the space is equipped with a high-tech entertainment system, overhead lights and comfortable lounges where you can while away the evening. Just ahead of the skylounge, you’ll find a sheltered terrace with a sunken spa pool to accommodate a late-night dip.

To top it all off, Khalilah comes packed with a matching 20-foot tender—dripping in gold, of course—as well as an array of water toys, including a jet pack, hoverboard, wakeboard, jet skis, kayaks, paddle boards and inflatables.

Exclusively for sale with SuperYachtsMonaco , the superyacht has an asking price of roughly $31 million (€28.5 million). If the festive season has you watching your shekels, you can also charter the superyacht.
