16ft Mcvey Falcon daysailer

Ihave just purchased a mcvey falcon 16ft. 22ft mast. can't find any info on this boat other than were it was built and who built it.I have questions .Dose it have some sort of balast and is it supposed to have wooden seats? thanks Len

I have owned my McVay Falcon 16' for five years and have found it to be very stable, easy to rig and handle, and a perfect family daysailor for lakes and other protected bodies of water. I bought it as an abuse/neglect case from a woman who let it sit in her driveway for over 17 years. The hull was filled with green water, the varnish was falling off in sheets, and the shine had dulled - but I could see it held water and the price was right! After a few weeks of scrubbing and varnishing I have a terrific boat! She was built in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada and mine is a 1966, Hull #20. My Falcon has teak coaming around the cockpit, wooden seats that open to shallow storage lockers, a wooden cap on the centerboard trunk, and a three-section plank floorboard to keep me out of the bilge. Sloop-rigged with a hank-on headsail, it's a classy looking boat on the trailer and in the water. The mast is stepped on top of the cuddy and can be done singlehanded by using the topping lift to steady the mast as you clip on the forestay. The storage under the cuddy is very roomy and can easily stow picnic supplies and gear or a snoozing child. With a boom tent you could probably overnight aboard, but I haven't tried it. Most Falcon models I've seen have a lever to raise/lower the centerboard, but mine is lifted with the use of a lanyard through the top of the centerboard trunk. The board kicks up when you hit shallows, and with it pulled fully up into the trunk you can beach her. I have two rudders; a large mahogany kick-up rudder, and a smaller laminated one that I'm sure was original to the boat. There are no winches, and the jib sheets are run through fairleads and held by camcleats. The hull is very thick and more than able to take the kind of abuse I dish out; smashing into docks, running too shallow up a concrete boat launch, etc. I've never noted more than surface scratches. Unlike many smaller sailboats, she is not the least bit "tippy". I have had her out in some very stiff breezes and, with a steady hand on the rudder and mainsheet, have been able to get her easily up past 6.5 knots. I haven't measured, but a 1966 Yachting Magazine listed the following specs: LOA: 15' 9" LWL: 14' 3" Draft: 2' 10" Sail Area: 137 sqft. Photos are available at voodooacrobat's Yahoo! profile There is an active McVay Delphi Forum with many members who are eager to share their knowledge. I used to use an ancient 3hp British Seagull for power, but replaced it with a 28lb thrust electric trolling motor which takes here easily to and from the dock, up canals, etc. It's a great fit. All in all the Falcon 16' is a great first boat for anyone, and a perfect family picnic daysailor.

Hi, I bought a falcon this year in Waterford Ct., and have been having lots of fun with it. I have a problem with the transom and want to ask if anyone else has similar a similar problem. I bought an extra long shaft Mercury motor and the angle of the transom prohibits the shaft from coming completely out of the water. I am new to sailing and have no idea how the jib is supposed to be rigged. I have it going outside of the rigging cables but it seems like maybe the previous owner may have the hardware in the wrong place. I general the rigging is not really easily understood by me.  

Thank you! But first need to fix rotten stringer and 2 weak spots. Also need to figure out how to properly rig the mainsheet. Pictures I found online all indicate I need more parts.

that would work . long enough so the block will clear the boom. the boom you have was designed to roll the sail around for reefing or storage. that idea did not work well and most never used it that way. very hard on the sail.  

The more I open up de boat, the more fixing I will need to do with the boat. The more I need to fix the boat, the more I learned about the boat and how to make it good again. Love the journey. This is going to be a long one.  

Hey Jim, I've book looking for information on this particular type of boat! One question that I cannot confirm is in sailboatdata they say "Displacement: 1,650 lb / 748 kg Ballast: 850 lb / 386 kg" Is that correct or close? That seems a lot leaver than other boats if that size. I'm asking just because my vehicle doesn't have a huge towing capacity so I'd really confirmation from someone who has one. Like Siren 17/Tanzer16/Wayfarer 16 are all sub 1000lbs. Thanks!

Eddy line falcon 16.

Found an Eddyline Kevlar Falcon 16 for $800. What do ya’ll think?

I have not paddled one or even seen one but it looks like a kayak I would like to own. I have read a few reviews of the Falcon and they seem pretty positive. I have the Fathom model but I wish Eddyline still made something like the Falcon for a little more speed and performance. If the boat is in good shape $800 seems like a reasonable price to me.

Falcon or Nighthawk? These were earlier model Eddylines. I thought the Falcon was 18’ as I know that the Nighthawk is 16’. You’ll enjoy either but check so you know just what you’re getting.

Is that Falcon 16 kevlar or fiberglass?

Fantastic boat, I own the Falcon 18 and have paddled the Falcon 16, they definitely have both the 18’ and 16’ Falcons but the 16 is definitely rare and was discontinued before the switch to carbonlite(thermoformed plastic, Falcon s18, which also included a drop skeg). Tender primary stability but excellent secondary, probably the best feel on edge of any boat- very natural and great in the rough water. Faster than most 16 footers, you will have no problem pacing with longer boats, sleek and narrow. The Falcon 16 tracks well with built in aft section hull skeg, similar to a Nordkapp, which also makes turning slow unless the boat is put on edge- then its agile and playful. Both Falcons are low volume for their length, but have plenty of room for most of us (week or less). These boats are not new but the build quality for glass and Kevlar Eddylines is great and the boats hold up well for their age, also the 16 is lightweight @ 40lbs ish and easy to move around or cartop. If I recall correctly the Falcon 16 does not have perimeter lines which I found odd, and no day hatch if that is something you require. Also the round hatches seal better than the flat ones in my opinion. Great boat for smaller paddlers but I fit comfortably at 5’11" and 200lbs with size 11 shoe. Bottom line, great boat at a decent enough price- Life is short and boats are cool! buy it and give it a whirl!

I owned the carbolite eddyline falcon 18 for a few years and my wife owns a fiberglass Falcon 16. Overall I think the falcon 16 was a much better kayak . I took a rolling course using the falcon 18 and it would turn downwind when i was watching the instructor and getting ready to set up the opposite of all the other kayaks in the class which would weathercock in these conditions I think I traded it it for a Derek Hutchinson Reiver which was more what I wanted My wife liked the falcon 16 which seemed perfect for her size and using a Greenland paddle and rolling but a few years ago she decided to switch to standup paddle boards so I will be listing it on paddle.com probably for $900 I am in Florida near Daytona beach if anyone wants to look at it

Everyone who digs boating has heard of the Hobie Cat, the sleek little catamaran that burst on the scene and captured the attention of all the fast-action sailors.

Marked by asymmetrical hulls and special trampoline supports, the Hobie can reach speeds above 20 mph and perform with a rare agility.

But it has one drawback.

It costs mucho dinero.

Thus, we introduce the Hobby Kat, sailboat plans, a build-it-yourself version of the “Hobie” that should cost from half to a third of the commercial version. If you have the moola, of course, go for a Hobie and have the time of your life on the water.

But she sails sweetly and fast—qualities which have made the “Hobie” popular

Even in a light air she’ll slip through the water at a fast clip.

She has no centreboards, leeboards or keel, and needs none.

The inside of each hull has built-in lift, like an airplane wing, so that as the boat heels and one hull digs in the boat is pulled back to windward.

You can carry her on a trailer or even disassemble her.

Many a “stink pot” addict will take a second look at Tern because she planes in modest breezes, is easy to handle, and her streamlined prow arid pod-shaped, “inland scow” type hull offer slight water resistance. Then too, there’s a charm about the tiller of a sailer that’s not matched by the wheel of a motor-powered boat. Part of it is the challenge of making the most of nature’s free-wheeling breezes. Even with her 72sq.ft of sail, this Free Sailboat Plan is remarkably stable, and packs as many as four persons aboard

For thousands of inland lakes, Tern is the answer to sailing water sport, she is rugged and easy to launch

And she’s remarkably easy to build.

Falcon is a small, speedy, sporty sailboat which handles well. Tests on the original Falcon showed that she could easily out-distance boats of comparable size such as the one design class Snipe and Comet sailers.

And she will pace neck and neck with 18 footers with considerably greater sail spread.

This strong, beamy, eight-foot pram may be sailed either cat-rigged or sloop-rigged.

The dagger-board may be adjusted forward to balance the helm when sailing with the addition of a jib sail.

Oars or a small outboard motor may also be used to power this versatile Free Sailboat Plans.

Dart” is a small two or three person sailing craft, designed for use on protected waters such as bays. lakes, rivers or wherever sheltered waters are found. Its construction will repay the builder handsomely and provide a fast sailing craft, light in weight, easily transportable and cheap to construct with all difficult joinery eliminated

It provides thrilling and economical sport.

The 'Crescent', designed by C. T. Allen, is the ideal sailboat for day sailing on a small lake, river, or protected waters of a bay.

Centreboard design (Fig. 2) reduces Crescent's draft, so Shallow is not a problem.

Its broad beam of over 5½ft. makes it an ideal family boat because there is room for a cockpit large enough to accommodate four adults or two adults and three kids, and side and forward decks big enough to stretch out on when sun bathing.

SpaceX launches Starlink satellites on record 20th reflight of a Falcon 9 rocket first stage

Liftoff occurred at 9:40 p.m. EDT on Friday (April 12).

SpaceX has broken its rocket-reuse record yet again.

A Falcon 9 rocket launched 23 of SpaceX's Starlink internet satellites to orbit from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Friday (April 12) at 9:40 p.m. EDT (0140 GMT on April 13).

It was the 20th liftoff for this particular Falcon 9 first stage, according to a SpaceX mission description , setting a new reusability mark for the company. The mission  lifted off on the 43rd anniversary of NASA's first launch of its reusable spacecraft, the space shuttle , which first flew this day in 1981.

To plan, the Falcon 9's first stage came back to Earth for the 20th time, landing about 8.5 minutes after it launched on the drone ship A Shortfall of Gravitas, which was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean off the Florida coast.

The Falcon 9's upper stage, meanwhile, continued hauling the 23 Starlink satellites to low Earth orbit (LEO). The spacecraft were set to be deployed there about 65.5 minutes after liftoff.

So SpaceX's reuse records don't tend to last long. The previous mark — 19 flights for a Falcon 9 booster — was first set in December 2023 and then repeated in February and March 2024 . 

SpaceX has now launched 38 orbital missions so far in 2024. Most of them have been dedicated to building out its Starlink broadband megaconstellation, which currently consists of nearly 5,650 operational satellites .

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. Comfort Ratio
