The 10 Best Explorer Yachts for High-Seas Adventures
A 350-foot gigayacht or 60-foot cruiser size isn't what defines an explorer yacht. the devil's in the details when it comes to authenticity., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Unlike fashion trends that seem to move as fast as a Redbull F1 car, the yachting industry takes its time adopting new ideas. There seems to be one exception. Explorer vessels, born out of the owners’ desires to go farther and stay longer, without sacrificing creature comforts, is developing with some urgency.
Several dozen builders and designers are now focusing on explorers, but they are also consulting with adventure travel firms that have a long history of using expedition yachts in remote parts of the globe. ICON Yachts, for example, collaborated with Cookson Adventures and the International Seakeepers Society on its Project Mission in both the overarching design and the details found across the yacht. Adventure outfitter EYOS employs its expertise routinely with Damen’s explorer vessels, most recently with the 190-foot Pink Shadow. EYOS has a list of 50 features that separate authentic explorers from faux versions that might look the part but lack the necessary infrastructure and design elements.
Long-range cruising, system redundancy for autonomy at sea, and storage to carry specialist equipment like submersibles are some of the requirements that define expedition boats. There’s also deck configuration for the easy launch of tenders and toys, along with strong, ice-class hulls and climate-controlled areas comfort in extreme polar and tropic regions.
We culled through the latest fleet of explorers with multiple lengths and designs, selecting a single feature that we think makes it best in class. Here are 10 of our favorites.
Best Pilothouse: Doggersbank 77 Offshore
More than 700 Doggersbank motoryachts have been built since the 1960s, with the latest model scheduled for delivery in 2025. The robust, offshore vessels are designed by Dutch studio Vripack for long ocean passages, assisted by a high, flared bow. “It prevents green water from hitting the wheelhouse windows in rough seas, and together with the Portuguese bridge, ensures the captain’s view is not obstructed,” Joost Mertens, Doggersbank fleet manager, told Robb Report . “The yacht’s steel hull ensures the yacht sits better in the water making it less vulnerable to wind and high waves.”
Best Deck Configuration: Columbus Crossover 42
The Columbus Crossover 42 is defined by both straight and angled surfaces, tapered stern sections and a concentration of volume in the bow that is becoming on many explorers. What is atypical is the yacht’s compact but flexible dimensions that accommodate a large cockpit tender and a 108-square-foot swimming pool with relaxation areas. Sold to an U.S. customer, it’s scheduled for delivery in 2025.
Best Multipurpose Stern: Bering B165
Turkish boatbuilder Bering Yachts revealed details of its new 162-foot flagship explorer yacht, the B165 , at the Dubai International Boat Show in March. The yacht can carry 18,400 gallons of fuel, which the builder says will give it a 4,000 nautical mile range when cruising at 12 knots. It also has a 2,640-gallon holding tank. What singles the B165 out among other explorers, however, is its multi-purpose stern area for both function and form. The elongated aft deck has a swimming pool surrounded by sunbeds. When the bulwarks are folded down, the space becomes an even larger overwater terrace. When the pool is not in use, it can be used as a covered storage area for water toys and expedition equipment. The yacht’s two tenders are also stored on the aft, making it a flexible space for both equipment and guests.
Best Family-Friendly Concept: Project Mimer
This 197-foot expedition concept by Tillberg Design of Sweden caters to family travel with a helicopter pad as well as multiple tenders and toys. It’s pitched by the studio as an introduction to true explorer yachting. It has a functional crew layout for efficient operations and an upper deck owner’s suite with a forward terrace and spa pool. With a hull that will be built to the Polar Code Category, the concept also has an optional helipad aft and long list of toys, from an electric luxury tender and two expedition RIBS to quad bikes, a submersible, Jet Skis, and, of course, an amphibious vehicle. The five-decked yacht sleeps 12 guests with crew quarters for 17 and an additional staff member, such as a nanny.
Best Ice Explorer: Damen SeaXplorer 105
Damen’s 345-foot SeaXplorer 105 is the largest model in the SeaXplorer range, with exterior design by Azure Yacht Design. The platform was developed under the guidance of expedition specialists EYOS Expeditions, who considered over 150 design criteria, from the hull form and bridge layout to the tender davits and Zodiac boarding arrangements. But it is EYOS’s expertise in the polar regions—it facilitated the first heli-ski charter in Antarctica and the first 3,200-foot sub dive to the Antarctic midnight zone—that gives the vessel its point of difference. The SeaXplorer has an ice-strengthened hull and a specially shaped icebreaking stern to maneuver through rough terrain.
Best Interior: Project Fox
On top of having a cool name, Project Fox has a bright, contemporary interior, courtesy of London’s Q Design, that is becoming more common on expedition yachts. The full-beam owner’s stateroom is also one of the yacht’s standout features, with its marble en suite and hardwood floors. The salon is also luxe, with white walls that brighten up travel even in areas that are sunlight deprived. Project Fox also has four other staterooms.
Best Autonomy: Project Master
ICON Yachts’s Project Master was a transoceanic offshore support vessel before the Dutch shipyard began a refit to turn it into an explorer yacht (see before and after inset). It’s equipped with diesel-electric hybrid propulsion, a wide beam for multiple tender spaces, a 7,200-nautical mile range, and flexible cabin arrangements for expedition crew. Other features include a science lab and a certified heli-deck. “The yacht’s helicopter and sub capability mean it can offer assistance in areas with challenging access and little infrastructure,” Micca Ferrero, owner of ICON Yachts, told Robb Report . “The design is for the demands of self-sufficient voyages.”
Best Use of Volume: Arcadia Yachts A96
The A96 mixes the lines, volume, and open-plan layout of Arcadia’s Sherpa series with the speed, joystick maneuverability, and quality of the yard’s A range. It’s the first Arcadia to have an Igor Lobanov-designed interior, as well as a high bow and high deckheads for traversing rough water. But its big differentiator is the 214 gross tonnes of volume and 24-foot beam that generate big volumes—4,300 square feet of usable space, which is 30 percent more than on other similar-sized yachts. Low bulwarks and lateral walkways emphasize the sense of openness.
Best Bow: Project Shackleton
This 351-foot build from Lürssen has an inverted bow that looks like an eagle’s beak. The shape is designed to slice through waves with much lower vibration through the hull, while also reducing rock and roll in rough seas. Unlike the quasi-research vessel exteriors of many explorers, this vessel is representative of the changing look of many in this growing segment.
Best Multi-Mode Hull: Azimut Magellano 60
The Magellano 60 isn’t technically an explorer yacht. Think of it as a cruiser designed for some long-distance travel. But it does have one very interesting feature, what its builder Azimut calls a “dual-mode” hull. The semi-planing shape is designed to optimize fuel consumption (and therefore lower emissions) by about 20 percent (compared to similar-sized vessels) at low and medium speeds. The yacht’s bow is also designed to cut through waves for better seakeeping at a range of speeds. The boat cruises very efficiently at 18 knots but will hit a top end of 26, thus delivering the performance of a planing hull with the benefits of a displacement hull.

Lars - Chianti is just way to elegant to be an expedition yacht http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1627 Kelly Cook
AMG YF Moderator
Kelly, you are right. The Chianti has what Carl calls an Expedition bow. Frankly, before he mentioned it I had never heard this expression... /Lars
YachtForums Administrator
The term "expedition" was used as a loose descriptive of Chianti. Let me explain... For many years, expedition's were big bow, blue water boats that looked more like small freightors. In recent years, a few designs evolved with these same "big bows", but had luxury yacht superstructures. Most luxury yachts in the past maintained a relatively constant amount of freeboard, with a slight graduation toward the bow. In recent years, a number of designs and new launches have adopted a much more aggressive amount of freeboard toward the bow, looking more like an expedition style hull. Quite simply, designs and demands have evolved toward hulls with greater rough water capability. The term "expedition" is not truly applicable anymore. At the time Lars designed Chianti, there were few (if any) luxury yacht hulls utilizing this design. Now... it is more the norm. Lars, you were ahead of your time.

I'd say the Bling is fully prepared for an expedition . . . . to the nearest disco
yeah and it looks like it will be a very successful expedition kootenay67 : thanks for the link to that great review. You definitely have got the yard right. She looks to be one of the earlier launches, either C'est la vie or sea of love did you see that they link to Carl's review on the manufacturers website. that is pretty cool.
Merijn Guest
I saw PERFECT HARMONY on 22 May at the Seaport Marina in Ijmuiden, The Netherlands. The yacht on the picture isn't PH as she has no mast with domes. Also the other Baron, C'EST LA VIE, has not such a mast, so she must be the second Baron OCEAN OF LOVE.
thanks Merijn. that is her home berth (Faliro Marina)
I just corrected myself as I mixed ups the names...oops

My choice would be Classic MY, but with added touches of all 3 of the other themes! No doubt the result would be condemned directly to the Rogues' Gallery Kelly
I am also in favour of a mix, my favorite today is the Triton from Delta which I think is a both contemporary and timeless expedition yacht design.

Performance and function over looks. My votes for expedition style. EDIT: Hey, I saw Triton around last year, anyone have any information on it?
So would Triton be an example of expedition hull with MY superstructure?
Triton is a modern expedition yacht with a well balanced superstructure. That´s all. Here is the scale model version of the Delta Marine 163' From www.isaksenscalemodels.com

The exposition space increased up to 30 000 sq m and was accommodated in all 4 exhibition halls of the fairgrounds! 280 Russian (Arkhangelsk, Vyborg, Kazan, Kaluga, Republic of Karelia, Moscow and Moscow region, Nizhny Novgorod, Novorossiysk, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, St. Petersburg, Sverdlovsk region, Sochi, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Yaroslavl region) and foreign ( Denmark , Germany , Holland , Greece , Spain , Italy , Cyprus , China , Latvia , Poland , USA , Turkey , Ukraine, Finland , France , Montenegro and Croatia ) companies participate in the show.
Moscow Boat Show provided the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continued to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!
Unique exhibits were presented at the show for the first time: exposition of private submarines from U-Boat Russia company, Marquis Yachts 420 SB motor yacht from Sport Bridge S. Marine series, SAGA-415 yacht from Saga Boats Norwegian shipyard, Jetlev-Flyer from MS Watersports.
Moscow Boat Show a Great Success
More than 400 yachts were displayed within the frames of the event including the largest boats ever exhibited in Russia – the 19-meter giant motor yacht Princess 54 as well as the Princess 50 yacht from Nord Marine and Baja speed boat from Burevestnik.
Domfinland OY unveiled a luxury project from Finnish real estate: a seaside premium class hotel in Hanko named consonant with the location Merihanko.
The trade fair was traditionally opened by a Gala Opening Ceremony. Arcady Zlotnikov, First Deputy Director Crocus Expo IEC, was the first to take the floor at the official opening ceremony. He greeted warmly exhibitors, guests and visitors of Moscow Boat Show. Nikolay Krjuchek, Deputy Chief of the State Inspection on Small size Vessels (GIMS) of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Russia, Georguiy Shaiduko, Acting President of the Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS), Olympic champion in Atlanta and Ekaterina Grishechkina, Director of exhibition Moscow Boat Show also spoke at the ceremony.
The high-ranking guests noted dynamic development of the branch which well reasoned the intensive growth of the exposition and appearance of rather unique “gems”.
A number of business meetings and negotiations were held within the frames of the project: the exhibition was visited by a large delegation of Greek businessmen for the purpose of establishment of mutually beneficial cooperation with the Russian colleagues.
More than 400 yachts on display at the Show
Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS) celebrated its 100 anniversary within the frames of Moscow Boat Show and arranged an exposition of future sailing sport museum (rare awards, gifts, articles from private collections, pictures and etc.) which had been collected since 1912.
Due to carefully chosen running dates the show was visited by more than 26 000 people. The majority of the visitors were of targeted audience – vessel owners and specialists of the branch.
The work at the next edition of the show is under way! The show will be held in March 2013. The overall exhibit space will comprise 40 000 sq m. The exhibition will impress with exclusive exhibits and the latest technological achievements.
Moscow Boat Show was not only an entertaining but at the same time a business promotional event. Participation in the trade fair was a unique opportunity to present a company and products to a distinctly selected targeted audience of industry specialists. They were well prepared to discuss business in the Russian market and even to close a deal on-site.
The show helped representatives of yachting business to get acquainted with their Russian colleagues and gradually improved national yachting market to a new level. It is obvious that for 5 years of its running the project has turned to a status event of the international exhibitions calendar.

Danish butter magnate Lars Emil Bruun's vast coin collection hitting auction block 100 years after he died
Updated on: May 13, 2024 / 6:02 AM EDT / CBS/AP
Copenhagen, Denmark — The vast coin collection of a Danish butter magnate is set to finally go on sale a century after his death and could fetch up to $72 million, its auction house says.
Lars Emil Bruun, also known as L.E. Bruun, stipulated in his will that his 20,000-piece collection be safeguarded for 100 years before being sold. Deeply moved by the devastation of World War I, he wanted the collection to be a reserve for Denmark, fearing another war.
Now, over a century since Bruun's death at the age of 71 in 1923, New York-based Stack's Bowers, a rare coin auction house, will begin auctioning the collection this fall , with several sales planned over the coming years.
On its website , the auction house calls it the "most valuable collection of world coins to ever come to market." The collection's existence has been known in Denmark but not widely, and has never been seen by the public.
"The collection ... has remained essentially intact, unlike those of his contemporaries, which have long since been dispersed," the website says. " ... Since 2011, nearly 20,000 meticulously arranged items, housed within four grand custom-made cabinets (as they were at Mr. Bruun's demise in 1923), have remained securely stored in a secret location, insured for 500,000,000 Danish kroner (approximately $72,550,000)."
"When I first heard about the collection, I was in disbelief," said Vicken Yegparian, vice president of numismatics at Stack's Bowers Galleries.
"We've had collections that have been off the market for 100 years plus," he said. "But they're extremely well known internationally. This one has been the best open secret ever."
How the collection was amassed
Born in 1852, Bruun began to collect coins as a boy in the 1850s and '60s, years before he began to amass vast riches in the packing and wholesaling of butter.
His wealth allowed him to pursue his hobby, attending auctions and building a large collection that came to include 20,000 coins, medals, tokens and banknotes from Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
Following the devastation of World War I and fearing another war, Bruun left strict instructions in his will for the collection.
"For a period of 100 years after my death, the collection shall serve as a reserve for the Royal Coin and Medal Collection," it stipulated.
"However, should the next century pass with the national collection intact, it shall be sold at public auction and the proceeds shall accrue to the persons who are my direct descendants."
That stipulation didn't stop some descendants from trying to break the will and cash in, but they weren't successful. "I think the will and testament were pretty ironclad. There was no loophole," Yegparian said.
Yegparian estimates some pieces may sell for just $50, but others could go for over $1 million. He said potential buyers were already requesting a catalogue before the auction was announced.
The collection's century-long path to auction
The collection first found refuge at former Danish royal residence Frederiksborg Castle, then later made its way to Denmark's National Bank.
Denmark's National Museum had the right of first refusal on part of the collection and purchased seven rare coins from Bruun's vast hoard before they went to auction.
The seven coins - six gold, one silver - were all minted between the 15th and 17th centuries by Danish or Norwegian monarchs. The cost of over $1.1 million was covered by a supporting association.
"We chose coins that were unique. They are described in literature as the only existing specimen of this kind," said senior researcher Helle Horsnaes, a coin expert at the national museum.
"The pure fact that this collection has been closed for a hundred years makes it a legend," Horsnaes said. "It's like a fairytale."
