C: Inside Baglietto's 54m family-friendly superyacht designed for every generation

Everybody knows that blood is thicker than water, but perhaps it’s true that blood is thicker on the water as well. The family that commissioned the 54.55 metre Baglietto named C certainly seems to think so. The yacht was designed from the keel up to cater to the family’s every yachting whim and is replete with customisations that make her an excellent fit for the clan, no matter the generation or interest. But completing such an all-encompassing build was no easy task. Luckily the owners found a team of brokers, designers and builders who were able to make their dream come to life.

In Italy, it is common to refer to the person who ushers a project along to life as il padre – the project’s father. Many hands worked together to complete C , but if one had to point to a single padre, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone more deserving than Fernando Nicholson, senior sales broker at Camper & Nicholsons . The quadrilingual Nicholson was born into the brokerage business and now runs the company’s new Miami office. His expertise has been gleaned from 35 years in the industry and he was able to put it all to good use with this Baglietto. He had to – he was effectively working from scratch.

“Nobody knew about this boat,” Nicholson says. “We designed it from nothing. It came from a brand-new platform. But I was fortunate because I was working with a long-term client of mine and they have deep boating knowledge. So they knew what they wanted and my job was to deliver that to them. And frankly, I think it all worked out incredibly well.”

What the client needed, first and foremost, was a vessel that could offer enough space and privacy for the family members to pursue their respective on-the-water passions. And, according to Nicholson, that meant the project’s requirements were four-fold. “First, we knew we wanted to accommodate 17 people,” he says. “Second, we needed a shallow draft. Third, the beach club had to be outstanding. And lastly, we wanted two master cabins. The patriarchs of the family are brothers so that last point was important.”

To ably incorporate all of the owners’ requirements, Nicholson reached out to the much sought-after Viareggio-based nautical designer Horacio Bozzo . “We had some dreams of doing crazy things,” Nicholson says with a chuckle, “and sometimes crazy things don’t work. But we chose Bozzo because it’s well known that he can make crazy things work out beautifully.”

Bozzo attacked the project’s requirements with his trademark creativity and flair. “I knew from the start that this Baglietto was going to be something quite different, and a large part of that comes from the amount of people the family needs to keep comfortable,” the designer says. “One piece of the design that flowed from this need – and that will be immediately obvious to anyone who steps aboard – is that there are four staterooms on the forward portion of the main deck. There are twin mirroring masters for the brothers, and then two more mirroring VIPs for other family members. This arrangement is rather unusual for a yacht of this size, but it works well for a few reasons. One, there’s no argument over who gets the better cabin because there are multiple versions of the same one. And two, the main deck has enormous windows, so the staterooms benefit from all the natural light that they let in. You’re never going to feel closed in in those staterooms, that much is for sure!”

The cabins have another design advantage that Nicholson points out with pride. “The walk-in closets and the make-up areas are at the entrance to the cabins,” he says. “So when you step into the cabin you step into a sort of a mini lobby. No one wants to step directly into the bedding area. You have to walk well into the stateroom before getting to the bed. And this was inspired by privacy.”

Privacy is key on board this Baglietto. “Keeping guests and crew as separated as possible was a tenet of the design, so that the crew can work with no interference,” Bozzo says. “With the four large cabins on the main deck, it worked out quite well in that regard, because the galley is down below, and we use a dumb waiter to help with service, so this way, nobody is ever in anyone else’s hair. The flow aboard the yacht, the way people can move through it, is nearly effortless.”

Nicholson concurs. “I’ll tell you something else, the room for the crew on board is just astonishing. We are expecting to have 13 crew members and we are also expecting them to be very happy – which is good because when the crew is happy it becomes much easier to keep the owners happy. The yacht has six [bunk] cabins plus one single cabin for the captain on the bridge deck. They’re all very spacious and state of the art – they spare nothing.”

The owners also wanted to spare no destination, and the Bahamas is a particular favourite. But with a yacht this big, that age-old Bahamas conundrum was sure to arise: what to do about the draft in such a shallow destination?

The answer lay with the yard. While steel is a common build material for the hull of a yacht in this size range, Baglietto recommended something a bit less obvious. “The hull and the superstructure are aluminium,” says Andrea Lavagnino, project manager at Baglietto. “We knew the boat would displace 900 gross tons with the amount of volume needed for the family. And if you [build] that with steel, which is so dense, you’ll draw three metres easily. So you can forget the Bahamas. But with aluminium, we were able to make the beam wide at 10.4 metres, which helped us draw 2.6 metres. [The shallower draft] opens up a lot of top-notch cruising grounds that the family can enjoy.”

The aluminum and wide beam also give the vessel exceptional height, which translates to some exceptional entertainment spaces. “The verticality of the hull space offers so much headroom,” says Hot Lab ’s Enrico Lumini, who did the interiors. “It doesn’t feel like a 54m; it feels like a 64m.”

Lumini points to the yacht’s beach club as one beneficiary of its stature. “The beach club is one of my favorite parts of this yacht. It’s a bit unusual on a boat this size to have a beach club on the exact same level as the swim platform, but we were able to do that because the boat’s height is higher than normal. Plus, there are three huge openings to the beach club area to let in sea breezes and light. Also, what’s incredible about this deck is that it can transform into a gym, sauna or massage room. It’s so versatile, and that’s exactly how the family wanted it, because they all have different interests and different desires when they are on the water.”

The necessity for variety plays out in other ways in the yacht’s interior. The cabins, for example, have drastically different feels. “On the main deck, in the ‘adult’ cabins, as it were, the design is elegant and cozy,” Lumini says. “We used mainly oak and titanium with some gold leaf accents. It’s all very chic, and of course private, with the secluded entrance ways.”

However, the children’s rooms required a different, more playful touch. “Probably my favourite part of the lower accommodation is that in one of the cabins we have a chalkboard wall where the children can write and draw and it easily washes off,” Lumini says. “Also, the washbasins on that level are a little bit lower to accommodate shorter legs, and all the materials are colour- and kid-resistant.”

The age differences play out in the common entertainment areas as well. The aft end of the main deck has a salon that is meant for the younger generation, both children and adults. “It’s for daytime play,” Lumini says. “We wanted a fresh feel there, so we used lots of blues and whites and white oak for wood. We meant to replicate the sea with the colour scheme. You can relax here, and nothing feels uptight. It’s a great place to hang out on a couch and watch your children play – Flexform and Paola Lenti were the main brands we used here to get the proper feeling.”

However up one flight of steps, on the bridge deck, things get a bit more sophisticated. “The upper deck is dedicated to the adults and is much more glamorous,” Lumini says. “The tones are richer; the marbles and woods are very elegant. There’s a card table and a projector for movie night. Everything up there feels a bit more mature. It’s where the grownups can go play after the kids are all put to bed.”

But what about when the whole family wants to be together? Surely if they’re all on the same boat, they won’t be segregated by age the whole time? “Of course there are times when the whole family will want to be together,” Lumini says. “And for that we have a beautiful sundeck at the very top of the boat. It’s totally open, great for sunshine and really feeling alive while you’re at sea. It’s a sort of mix of two identities – sophisticated and fun. The idea was for the space to be used by the entire family. It’s got lounges, a bar and plenty of seating. Everyone can be up there and have their own little spaces, but still be together. And that’s what was important to us as a team, and them as a client and a family.” If you’re sensing a theme here, it’s by design. The family that plays together, stays together.

PIACERE Yacht – Inside Rossinavi’s 49.95m Superyacht

Measuring in at an impressive 49.95m the PIACERE yacht was built by Rossinavi and delivered in 2021. With a beam length of 8.8 meters and a draft of 2.45 meters, she has a volume of 499 tonnes.

The interior of the PIACERE yacht was carefully designed by Enrico Gobbi. She was designed by using a combination of walnut with a matte finish.

Throughout the vessel, there are white lacquered surfaces with marble accents to maximize feelings of spaciousness.

On board PIACERE there is room for 11 guests and 11 crew with the accommodation on the lower deck.

Other noteworthy amenities include the beach club which is in the stern of the vessel as well as a large tender garage.

Exteriorly designed by Horacio Bozzo Design, the PIACERE yacht offers optimal space for guests to relax and dine.

The main aft deck is shaded by the upper deck while stairways connect the lower deck and the beach club.

PIACERE has plenty of room for lounging and sunbathing offering gorgeous panoramic views.

Similar to other superyachts PIACERE has a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure.

Powered by 2 x Caterpillar engines she cruises at a speed of 12 knots while having the power to reach a maximum speed of 15 knots.

PIACERE has a range of 3,800 nautical miles and is in the top 10% LOA in the world. She sails under the Cayman Islands flag which is the second most common flag for superyachts of this magnitude.

The price of the PIACERE yacht has been kept discrete and as she was newly launched in 2021 she has never been listed for sale.

A rough estimate based on C yach t, which was launched in 2020 and is of a similar size would be between $40 – 55 million.

Superyacht St David promises to deliver an outstanding charter vacation

The 60m/196'10" 'St David' (ex. Xanadu) motor yacht built by the Italian shipyard Benetti is available for charter for up to 12 guests in 6 cabins. This yacht features interior styling by British designer Winch Design.

Built in 2008, St David boasts a multitude of decks ideal for relaxation and entertainment indoors or outdoors, ensuring guests will live la dolce vita on the open waters. She is equipped with a dancefloor, spa and gym.

Guest Accommodation

St David offers guest accommodation for up to 12 guests in 6 suites comprising a master suite and five cabins that can operate as twins or doubles. The bed configuration includes 1 king, 1 queen and 4 doubles. She is also capable of carrying up to 14 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht charter experience.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

A charter on St David is comfortable and convenient thanks to the provided amenities, notably a dancefloor where you and your guests can celebrate in style. Take the opportunity to be thoroughly pampered and indulged in the spa plus maintain your fitness routine and work out in the well-equipped gym. Retreat to the deck jacuzzi and soak up the scenery.

St David benefits from some excellent features to improve your charter, notably Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to stay connected at all times, should you wish. Guests will experience complete comfort while chartering thanks to air conditioning.

Performance & Range

Built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, she offers greater on-board space and is more stable when at anchor thanks to her full-displacement hull. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines, she comfortably cruises at 13 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 17 knots with a range of up to 5,500 nautical miles from her 116,000 litre fuel tanks at 12 knots. An advanced stabilisation system on board reduces the side-to-side roll of the yacht and promises guests exceptional comfort levels at anchor or when underway.

St David knows a thing or two about fun on the water, with an extensive selection of action packed water toys and accessories for you and your guests to enjoy whilst on charter. You'll be loving the huge adrenaline rush as you zip over the water on a Yamaha GP 1300 WaveRunner. Also there are waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. Twenty years ago, Greece’s Captain George Ioannou made the leap from working in the fast lane of superfast ferries, into the fast lane of superyachting. Since then, he’s had the privilege of commanding some of the most beautiful, prestigious and most sought-after charter yachts in the world.

Captain Ioannou shares a particularly unique bond with his current yacht - the famous Geco - in that he has been with her since she was still under construction. When he’s not welcoming guests on board the yacht whose DNA he helped to shape, he can be found passionately extolling the virtues of Greece and her proud seagoing heritage.

Describing himself as a ‘friendly and enthusiastic’ leader, Captain George Ioannou talks us through all aspects of a charter on board Geco, from day trips with the crew to the huge selection of water toys available on board.

Please tell us a little about your background and how you got into yachting?

I started out working on ferries, specifically in a class known as ‘superfast ferries’. I had roles as both a second officer and a safety officer. From there, I moved into working on board private and charter yachts. I’ve enjoyed a twenty year career in this industry so far.

How long have you been a captain and what are some of the yachts you’ve worked on?

I’ve been fortunate to have captained yachts for twenty years now and have worked on some fantastic vessels. Some of those include Lertal, Flot, Ninemia, Tsouvali and Tacos of the Seas.

When did you join this yacht?

I came on board in 2019 in Italy whilst the yacht was still under construction. When it launched the following year, I became captain.

How would you describe the owner’s vision for the yacht?

The owner’s vision is for the yacht to advertise to the world that Greece is the number one destination for yachting lovers. We hope to achieve this through the world-class luxury service offered to our guests on board Geco.

How would you describe the style and personality of the yacht?

Geco is truly a masterpiece of modern design and a real standout yacht. She combines generous spaces with large volumes into a sleek package. Her elegant and contemporary interior is accompanied by large exterior decks, a huge pool and an open-air sundeck with a full gym. The bow features a Touch and Go helipad for convenient, seamless arrivals.

How would you describe the ambience on board? 

Geco offers its guests a sense of relaxation and freedom. That’s married with the yacht’s incredible luxury and the crew’s world-class service.

What’s your personal style as captain?

I’m friendly and enthusiastic; I’m always ready to personally welcome our guests. My objective is always to ensure a hospitable, comfortable and friendly ambience on board.

What’s the best thing about working on this yacht?

The amazing crew and working on Geco since it’s such a new, state-of-the-art yacht.

What are some of the standout features of the yacht?

There are plenty - it’s difficult to choose! But the big one has to be the yacht’s incredible beach club area. It delivers true on-water living and its high sides combined with windows allow for seclusion and privacy whilst still enjoying the water and all of Geco’s water toys.

Other than that, I can point to the large pool, the open-air movie theatre, the Buddha bar lounge and the yacht’s generally elegant and luxurious interior.

Which areas of the yacht do guests most tend to gather on board?

Geco is designed for socialising and so our guests can take their pick from numerous spaces around the yacht. The Buddha bar lounge is a popular spot but there are also several al fresco dining areas. And at the end of the day, the outdoor cinema is ideal for cosying up under the stars and enjoying a movie.

Which types of clients are most attracted to a charter on board Geco?

People who love the sea and the sense of freedom that Geco has to offer.

What types of experience can you offer charter guests?

Guests can enjoy the sun and sea on a yacht that effortlessly combines generous spaces, large volumes and total luxury. She is a masterpiece of modern design and a truly stand out yacht. Geco also offers a unique gastronomy experience.

How would you describe the style and approach of the crew?

The crew is highly professional.  They’re an enthusiastic team, full of positive energy, ready to please and to offer the best hospitality.  They’re children and pet friendly.

Please share some examples where you and your crew have gone above and beyond to make the guest experience as special as possible.

Organising theme nights, beach barbecues, land excursions and visiting beautiful beaches with no land access.

Are there some interesting personalities or talents among the crew?

All of the crew members have interesting personalities. Chef Panagiotis in particular is a very experienced and talented chef. He’s extremely passionate about his job.

How is the yacht and her crew prepared to accommodate children and teenagers on a charter?

The yacht is equipped with the necessary safety equipment and loads of fun water toys. The crew organizes all kinds of activities depending on the ages of the children on board.

Who is the chef on board Geco and what is his background?

Chef Panagiotis has an Advanced Professional Diploma in Culinary Arts from Le Monde Institute. He has twelve years of experience as a chef. Throughout his career, he has worked in various well-known restaurants and 5-star hotels in Athens, Mykonos and Santorini. He’s also attended seminars in Sushi Fusion and Japanese cuisine offered by well-known Greek and foreign chefs. In 2019 he won the first prize of the Chef Competition in the Mediterranean Yacht Show.

Tell us about the toys and tenders? Which toys are the most popular with guests?

Geco features an exciting inventory of water equipment designed to maximise guests’ fun on the water. The line-up includes PWCs, a flyboard, an inflatable water slide and climbing wall, transparent kayaks, and snorkelling and diving gear. The most popular toys are the PWCs and the SeaBob.

What are your usual cruising grounds?

Geco can cruise throughout the Mediterranean, but our usual cruising area is the Eastern Mediterranean, especially Greece since Geco is based in Athens.  In the winter of 2021, the yacht was relocated to the Red Sea.

Which destinations are your personal favourites and why?

My personal favourite destination is Greece.  It offers a variety of destinations, with some more developed spots and some that are more isolated.

What have been some of the highlights or favourite memories of yours as captain?

The Armata Festival in Spetses is always a highlight for me, as well as the Miaoulia Festival in Hydra. The Miaoulia Festival celebrates the Greek defeat of the Ottoman Empire’s attempted invasion. Part of the event recreates the historic sinking of the Ottoman Empire’s flagship.

Another highlight for me are the breathtaking views of Milos and of Santorini.
