Welcome to the Essex Yacht Club
The Essex Yacht Club, established in 1890, is located just a quarter of a mile from Leigh Old Town. This family-oriented club is enjoyed my members of all ages and boasts over 100 cadets in its thriving Cadet section.
The club’s headquarters, HQS Wilton, is a ship and was converted from the first-ever glassfibre warship, HMS Wilton.
From Easter to October, the club offers an extensive sailing program with races and events suitable for sailors of all levels, from beginners in Optimists to experienced sailors in high performance dinghies and cruisers.
The club offers its members two tenders for boat transportation, as well as two fast ribs and a cadet boat to support their sailing needs while afloat. These are managed by the members themselves. From April to October, the club holds regular sailing events, mainly on weekends and in collaboration with the Leigh Sailing Club. The club also offers a range of social events throughout the year, from formal dinners to summer barbeques, for both sailing and non-sailing members.

Leigh-on-Sea Sailing Club is located on the northern shore of the Thames Estuary. This offers a variety of sailing conditions for dinghy sailors and cruisers from half-tide moorings. We have an active cadets section, keen racers and cruising dinghy sailors.
The clubhouse is situated in the heart of ‘Old Leigh’, and from our Clubhouse bar one can experience panoramic views of the Estuary. We enjoy extensive facilities at the water’s edge, with rack storage and slipways for dinghies, and moorings for cruisers.

Leigh-on-Sea Sailing Club is an active friendly club that promotes amateur sailing and racing in both dinghy and cruiser classes. The club also prides its self on keen family involvement and encourages fun family sailing and social events. The club shore based headquarters is located in the old station building in Old Leigh, adjacent to the beach.
Dinghy launching facilities are available at the waters edge and cruiser moorings are available along the foreshore and at Two Tree Island.

Situated at the mouth of the River Thames
In leigh on sea essex, welcome to leigh motor boat club.
Two brothers Alfie and Burt Lawson founded the Leigh Motor Boat Club in 1962. The “club” originally started out as a fishing club and at the time it was strictly men only, they used to meet at the Woodside Café on top of Belton way. From there the club moved to Alfie Lawsons workshop on Queens Avenue. Then onto the Esplanade pub Southend!
One club night they spotted a Thames Barge advertised in exchange and mart for the princely sum of £1000, the members hadn’t got the money to buy the boat outright so they managed to get a loan from the bank for £200. The loan enabled them to purchase the clubs first boat “Trojan”.
Trojan was equipped with two engines a “Kelvin J4” and a “Russell Cirrus”. The members hired a professional skipper to bring the boat down the Thames from Sherperton to Leigh-on-sea where she was piloted all the way down the Leigh creek.
Unfortunately the Local Council wouldn’t let the club keep Trojan in the creek, they were concerned that the mooring might break and take down the bridge linking Two Tree Island to the mainland. Instead the council offered a mooring in Old Leigh. However this arrangement also proved to be short lived as when the sea defences where strengthened in Old Leigh Trojan was forced into moving again.
The council then offered LMBC a mooring back by the bridge where Trojan stayed for 13 years without breaking her moorings during this time she was turned into a Club House.
After 13 years of glorious service, Trojan was eventually retired. The then Commodore, went over to Holland and sourced the current club barge “Lea”. LEA being the name of the previous owners second wife!.
The new boat “Lea” was skilfully brought over from Holland by a certain Angus Watson, the passage took 11 hours from Ostend in Belgium to Leigh-on-sea, Essex. . Once she was securely positioned in the creek Lea was then converted into the current LMBC club house.

Cruisers. The cruiser class is made up of craft that adapt well to drying moorings and shoal waters. Primarily they are bilge keel yachts and multihulls, there are also centre-boarder and lee-board craft. Cruiser Racing: This takes place together with other clubs in the area as part of the Combined Clubs Series and Southend Interclub.

A windy forecast kept a number of visiting soloists away but there were 8 visitors and 15 club boats entered for this the fifth Vintage Championship at this club, again well supported by Rooster Sailing. They were greeted with plenty of sunshine and a brisk northeasterly offshore wind.
