Sea King rides luxury over the waves

Yachts are symbols of luxury. Therefore, it is no wonder that they usually have the latest technological boat upgrades. However, if we go by the popular design concepts, in the near future, yachts too would become mainstream. With electricity and human power as their main source of energy, they would defy the current definition of yachts. No wonder,  we are sure to see many experiments in this field. Yachts like The Sea King show this new approach perfectly well. So let us check its design features along with other futuristic yacht designs.

The Sea King

Consisting almost entirely of wood, the bespoke yacht concept segregates in two decks. The top deck accommodates a cockpit, passenger bench, and two sun loungers. All of them have leather finish with metal and wood detailing. While on the other hand, the lower deck includes a double bedroom, living quarters with mini bar and fold-out bed, together with a kitchenette, drinks bar and bathroom. Moreover, Amalgamating sleek lines with ornate detailing, the Sea King uses natural materials including the finest cedar, mahogany and marante wood, apart from Connolly leather, contrasted with elegantly crafted stainless steel components, to pull off an exclusive and luxurious look that rouses a sense of understated excellence.

Powered by twin gas turbines linked to water jets, run by a drive-by- wire system in the cockpit, the 60ft (approximately) concept yacht can reach a top speed of 120 knots. Furthermore, the Sea King will transport passengers around adjacent islands, fulfilling all the requirements necessary for an overnight stay, conferring them with modern luxuries in the secluded yet mesmerizing islands.

1. hermes 66 eco yacht.

Balancing luxury and sustainability, designer Ben Mazur has come up with a stunning yacht design that promises environmentally luxurious sails in utmost comfort. “Hermes 66,” the eco yacht has hemp fiber finishing along with linseed oil-based resins. Furthermore, it also makes use of sustainable hydrofoil and aerofoil technologies to combat the performance of its motorized counterparts, but without harming the eco-system. Therefore, the eco-friendly yacht by the British designers simply becomes an inspiration for the yacht manufacturers tossing up between the eco and luxury travel.

2. Ra yacht

Winner of the World Superyacht Young Designer of the year award, American designer Adam Voorhees has come up with a unique boat named the “Ra Yacht” that aims to “blend luxury with comfortable living and an appreciation of the nautical environment.” Presenting fewer decks in comparison to similar size liners, the luxury yacht touts a helipad and swimming pool at the rear to sail you in comfort, while the drop down side panels open up the main living level to the sea. Integrating gesture driven interfaces for effortless navigation, the Superyacht accommodates five guest rooms, crew cabins and guest living quarters underneath the owner’s suite on the upper level.

3. Epiphany Yacht

Yachts are becoming a thing of luxury and pushing designers to create unique pieces which will cover the stretches of water with panache. Therefore, Nathan Gendotti along with Caan Yaylali and John Guarino has designed a yacht christened Epiphany that comes with an ability to transform and measures 113 feet in length and 30 feet in breadth. The yacht that looks like a sports car has been given a sleek appearance with all the swiftness intact. Once it touches a dock or cove a whole new experience unfurls transforming it instantly.

It has a range of 10 knts/900rpm 3000 N.Miles, at 15knts/2000rpm 2500 N.Miles and at 20knts/2500rpm 1800 N.Miles. In addition, the hull beautifully conceals the anchor in the triangle shaped cuts that are present at the bow of the yacht. Moreover, the cuts slide and drop down the anchor straight into the water body. The deck is quite spacious and comes decorated with a hot tub placed in the center.

Looking down from the helm is a living room that comes attached with a balcony for unrestricted view. The dining room comes attached with a kitchen which will further take you till the two guest bunks that have been positioned in the bow. Another stairwell will lead you till the guest suite and also the entrance to the master suite.

The roof slides open and has a 16 foot diameter opening. It is the same as the main entrance of the superstructure. Extending out from the rear of the yacht is a back platform. Furthermore, storage space is created as the half of the stairs on the port side can be lifted up and slid under the deck. Epiphany Yacht is all about clubbing comfort with a speedy experience.

4. Eco yacht concept

Yacht is like a luxury item floating on the surface of water. Taking one for a spin can be a breathtaking experience. It will transport you to a world where a direct connection with untainted surroundings can be formed. Francesco Struglia has come up with the 35m yacht concept to help you dive in sumptuousness.

The young designer from Rome (Italy) has crafted the luxury piece for A-Sign Studio . It has been built in a classy manner and will add a royal streak to the life of people earning megabucks. The masterpiece will have a fiberglass reticular structure that will rest directly on the hull. This will give birth to a free living room plant and a fresh and unique shape to the main deck . The photovoltaic modules have been split into two different levels in the bow. The total area of the panels change from 37 square meter to 62 square meter. The average electricity production will be approximately 6kW. This will take care of all the electric consumption and air conditioning as well.

The yacht has been designed in a way to provide ultimate comfort to the user. It will unfurl panoramic views and shower unending tranquility. The designer has wedged the best of equipments in all the cabins situated in the lower deck stateroom. The 35m yacht concept will live up to your expectations and move on watery surfaces with a lot of pizazz.

5. Gran Marlin 46 concept yacht

Contemporary architecture has been combined with the simplistic design of fisherman boats for making the Gran Marlin 46 concept yacht look brilliant. Though the exterior of this yacht resembles futuristic watercrafts but the interiors are more traditionally decorated. Furthermore, the designers of Keyframe Studio have utilized available space intelligently for making the yacht comfortable for users.

6. Jazz Yacht

Designed by Zaha Hadid, who is revered as one of the best architects of our age, the Jazz Yacht is a spectacular vessel to behold. The yacht looks like it has been transported from the seas of a futuristic society which is much advanced in terms of technology and architecture. It has a brilliant exoskeleton yet the interiors are luxurious and spacious.

7. Sand Craft 122

This one is a powerful yacht design concept that comes with two Rolls Royce engines that give 14,000 horsepower. The top speed of this yacht is around 43 knots. It has four double state rooms, reception area and also a salon with 52 inch LCD TV. The Sand Craft 122 also has a supercar and garage space for keeping it.

The concept of Adastra yacht was designed by John Shuttleworth Yacht Design Ltd. At present, it is being developed by McConaghy Boats in Zhu Hai, China. The sleek and futuristic looking yacht will have only one 1000HP diesel engine that gives 24 knots. Furthermore, there are one master cabin and two guest cabins for accommodating the passengers comfortably. In addition, the outrigger shape of this yacht gives it more stability on the water during long voyages.

9. Project Utopia

This yacht concept looks less like a yacht and more like a small luxury island. The design of this 325 foot wide, 11 story yacht has been made by Yacht Island Design. Furthermore, it has got a luxury casino, restaurants, huge swimming pools, 360-degree observation deck, and several rooms.

New age yacht design concepts are focusing more on technological excellence and simple yet magnificent exteriors. Every futuristic yacht concept offers some brilliant and astonishing features in terms of design and facilities.

MYBA Genoa Charter Show 2024: Best Yachts On Display

After eight years elsewhere, the MYBA Charter Show returned to Genoa, Italy this April. There were 60 yachts attending across three marinas and the Denison team was out in full force, including Europe Director Jeremy Roche and charter specialists Molly Playfair , Kristina Gagliardi , Ingrid Lammens Pichardie , and Radostina Trifonova . “Despite some unseasonably cold weather the first couple of days,” Molly shared, “we scoured the docks for some of the best yachts on offer for charter worldwide.” Discover our team’s favorite yachts on display at the show.

Radostina’s Top Choice

“My favorite yacht in the show was M/Y PURPOSE , a 55-meter Trinity Yacht, which just finished a 2024 refit,” Radostina shared. “The inspiration behind the name is ‘travel with purpose.’ Available for charter during the various stages of her world tour, her itinerary includes destinations such as the Red Sea , the Mediterranean , Scandinavia, Greenland and Canada, and other locations.” The design onboard is “absolutely beautiful,” with two master cabins and an elegant dining area.

“From a 30-foot waterslide to an inflatable cinema, her selection of water toys is immaculate,” she boasted. This charter yacht features more water toys than you can imagine. And if there’s something you wanted and don’t see? As per the words of the owner: ”If we missed one, tell us!” You won’t be left wanting for long.

Molly’s Pick

“My top pick is CARINTHIA VII , the 97.2-meter,” Molly said. “This famous Lurssen has just been totally refitted and is on the charter market for the first time in her 21-year history.” Talk about exclusivity!

“This immaculate boat is truly vast, and she offers so much to the charterer, including a 12-meter pool, a 90-square-meter gym (they have both a PT and a yoga instructor onboard), and a massive wellness area including a hammam, spa, and beauty salon on the lower deck with a dedicated therapist.”

The yacht also features a long list of water activities, including inflatable water toys, beach games, a flyboard, an inflatable jet ski dock, an inflatable trampoline, a jet ski, kayaks, a kneeboard, a sailing dinghy, Seabobs, a wakeboard, a water bike, water skis, waverunners, and even a water slide–just to name a few. There are even two tenders aboard.

Kristina’s Favorites

Kristina enjoyed the wide variety of charter yachts on display and had two she had to write home about. The first, Golden Yachts’ MALIA , was built in Greece. The owner bought her and all crew have been on since December. This charter yacht had many highlights.

“The chief stew set up the best ‘paint night’ with little easels and paint sets,” she gushed. “There’s a projector screen outside–great for outdoor movies! There is a huge gym that has everything. There’s also a massive Jacuzzi.”

MALIA’s interior features four cabins on the main deck, and eight total. There is one master, two kings, and one twin. There are very high ceilings and beautiful marble floors for a very spacious feel.

“MALIA means ‘God of the sea’ in Hawaiin,” Kristina explained. Another bonus for charter guests? “The boat is baby-proofed–there are no sharp edges! There are even 100-year-old and 70-year-old Bonzai trees.” Some other features Kristina highlighted were the beautiful beach club, couples massages, sauna and steam room, and amazing artwork. “The top shelf 48-foot fishing boat can go deep sea fishing and catch fresh tuna sushi. Simon, the chef, was fantastic,” she shared.

NURI , which means ‘world’ in Korean, is an incredible explorer vessel with a modern spin. “New to market, she has a light, bright, and stunning interior,” Kristina mentioned. NURI can accommodate up to 12 guests. “There is a beautiful full-beam master and two VIP staterooms. There’s a nice mix of materials. Guests can separate the office with a sliding door. There is even a heated floor. The Pullman comes over the top, and can be a twin Pullman.”

Kristina also highlighted that NURI will be in Alaska after the winter. “She is carbon neutral, so she is green. There are preserved flowers. The tablescape is amazing.” With a wide variety of toys onboard, there is also a swim platform for easy access to the water. There are a number of outdoor space options, including a vast sun deck with a Jacuzzi, bar, sun loungers, and a TV. This charter yacht has it all.

Jeremy’s Preference

“My favorite was KING BENJI ,” Jeremy disclosed. “A highly unique interior design finished to an exceptionally high standard. Combined with a brilliantly versatile main deck layout, she is super user-friendly, giving the flexibility of a country kitchen (which US clients love) and the ability to close for more privacy (which usually suits Europeans). I loved it, she is stylish but incredibly comfortable and inviting.”

This charter yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 cabins, with 10 crew. KING BENJI features a beach club and relaxing Jacuzzi with impressive waterfront views. Her list of water toys is long, but the highlights include jet skis, water skis, Seabobs, wakeboards, kneeboards, and paddleboards. She also houses two tenders for your enjoyment.

A private yacht with an eventful history

Even today, every detail on the SEA CLOUD radiates the glamour of a bygone era. Her elegance seems timeless, as she has retained her unconventional charm.

CAT. A Owners’ Suite 1

Like all the original accommodations, Marjorie Merriweather Post furnished the owner’s suites herself. Whenever she traveled aboard the SEA CLOUD, these posh, private quarters were her home, so she outfitted them in opulence. Today, her personal owners’ suite maintains her exquisite touch with white Carrara marble in the fireplace and bathroom, gold-plated swan fixtures, Louis Philippe chairs, an elaborate floor-to-ceiling dressing mirror and ornate golden-trimmed ceilings. The high-end design and furnishings reflect the successful entrepreneur’s penchant for luxuriating on this private yacht in ultimate comfort.

CAT. A Owners’ Suite 2

In addition to her exquisite taste, Marjorie’s attention to detail is also on display in the owners’ suites, richly reflected in the chambers of her first husband Edward Hutton, who gifted her the majestic SEA CLOUD sailing yacht. The maple wood paneling and furnishings create a feeling of warmth and solidity offset by a light, coffered ceiling. Hutton’s bureau-bookcase secretary with mirrored glass is a particularly stunning piece. In contrast to her white bath, his is done in red Carrara marble and includes a chest of drawers and golden fixtures.

CAT. B Deluxe Suite 3

The hospitality Marjorie cultivated still characterizes a stay on board the SEA CLOUD today. The original colonial style of this deluxe suite continues to welcome guests with the posh comforts and ambiance of a private yacht. Renowned nobility, celebrities and industry titans have all called these deluxe suites home on legendary sailings.

Throughout the commissioned construction of the SEA CLOUD in Kiel, Germany, and later when Marjorie was already living on board, she collected precious antiques from all over the world. This deluxe suite is one of the many examples of how skillfully she integrated the valuable pieces into the interior, and thus, into the overall appearance and ambiance of her private luxury yacht.

CAT. B Deluxe Suite 5

Marjorie frequently mentioned her goal of making family, friends and notable guests feel at home every minute on board the SEA CLOUD. Accordingly, she designed spaces like this deluxe suite to feel like the ultimate in comfort, five-star accommodations. Antique mahogany chests of drawers, marble in the bathroom and by the fireplace and unique pieces create cozy elegance.

As the SEA CLOUD’s original owner, Marjorie designed the interiors of her luxury sailing yacht with such attention to detail because she wanted to offer her daughter, Dina Merrill, a wonderful and safe home on board. This is especially noticeable in this deluxe suite where Dina spent a large part of her childhood. The warm maple finishings stand out with dramatic mahogany inlays. The unusual floor plan, including an angled fireplace makes the space feel even larger.

The main deck, where the original suites are located, is the heart and soul of the SEA CLOUD. This deluxe suite envelopes guests in its spirit of an exclusive private yacht. Deluxe Suites 9 and 10 are also part of the original accommodations on the main deck. Once used as single cabins for the former shipowners’ staff and their guests, they were redesigned into large luxury lodgings during renovation of the SEA CLOUD.

The largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, from Mark Zuckerberg to Jeff Bezos

• Megayachts have become a status symbol for the richest of the rich.
• In recent years, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have splurged on enormous boats.
• These are the biggest yachts owned by tech billionaires.

The average Joe celebrating a personal renaissance after, say, the end of a long-term relationship or when approaching a fresh decade might commemorate it with an ankle tattoo or a sports car. But if you're a billionaire, you may instead spend hundreds of millions on a yacht .

A few years after he and his wife divorced, Jeff Bezos shelled out on a megayacht. Last year, Bezos debuted the 127-meter vessel "Koru," a Māori symbol that signifies a fresh start — perhaps referring to that with his fiancée Lauren Sanchez.

Earlier this year, just before his 40th birthday, Mark Zuckerberg became the rumored owner of a yacht originally built for a Russian oligarch.

Superyachts have increasingly become ultrawealthy status symbols , providing highly secluded leisure and networking sites. They are — even more so than real estate — the single most expensive asset you can own.

"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Giovanna Vitelli, the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts, told Business Insider.

While many tech billionaires have bought yachts, the richest of the rich, like Bezos, Zuckerberg, and Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, have gone bigger. Their boats are virtual palaces at sea, decked with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.

A look at these megayachts — broadly defined as over 70 meters long, mostly custom-built, and often costing nine figures — offers a glimpse into how the .00001% lives. It's something few others will ever get to experience. Even chartering a yacht of this size for a week typically costs upwards of $1 million.

One major thing that hundreds of millions of dollars can buy is privacy. There are likely yachts that have not been publicly recorded or registered — for example, Evan Spiegel is rumored to own the 94-meter megayacht Bliss. In an industry ruled by discretion , deciphering who owns what is typically an exercise in stringing together many clues.

Here are the largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, listed in order of length.

Jeff Bezos: Koru and Abeona

Amazon founder Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the 127-meter Koru, made a splash last year as she crisscrossed the Mediterranean in her first summer at sea, with her 75-meter support vessel Abeona in tow.

The sailing yacht, which is hard to miss thanks to her massive size and unique design, was host to Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez's famous friends . The couple held an engagement party on board, which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, they were seen on the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.

Even before her completion, Koru made headlines. She drew the ire of some Dutch people, who vowed to hurl eggs after she was announced a historic bridge in Rotterdam might be taken apart to allow the Oceanco boat through. Luckily, the shipyard made alternative plans, and an egg crisis was averted.

Among yacht world insiders , Koru is widely praised for her craftsmanship.

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," one superyacht expert told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Mark Zuckerberg: Launchpad

Earlier this year, the yacht world was rife with rumors that Zuckerberg purchased Launchpad, a 118-meter superyacht originally designed for a sanctioned Russian businessman.

The ship made her maiden voyage in March, going from Gibraltar to St. Maarten and mooring in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Little is known about her interior, but photos show a large swimming pool and helipad. Her price, too, has been kept under wraps but is said to be nine figures.

Eric Schmidt: Whisper

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt made waves last year when he agreed to buy the Alfa Nero , the yacht of a sanctioned Russian oligarch, for $67 million in an auction conducted by Antigua and Barbuda. But he backed out of the deal following legal issues over her true owner. He quietly purchased Kismet instead. The 95-meter-long Lürssen-built boat was formerly owned by the Jacksonville Jaguar's billionaire owner Shahid Khan . Schmidt renamed her Whisper.

The ship can fit 12 guests and a crew of 28, according to Moran Yacht & Ship, which oversaw her construction. She features a master deck with a private jacuzzi, full-service spa, lap pool, movie theater, and outdoor fireplace.

While her final sale price was not public, she was listed for 149 million euros (about $161 million at current exchange rates), and at a charity auction in January, one week aboard the ship went for $2.4 million, according to industry outlet Yacht Charter Fleet.

Barry Diller: Eos

Barry Diller , the chairman of digital media company IAC, co-owns the megayacht Eos with his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg , who is immortalized by a figurehead sculpture by Anh Duong.

One of the largest private sailing yachts in the world, the three-masted Lürssen schooner measures 93 meters long. She took three years to be built before being delivered to Diller in 2009, and since then, little has come to light about her interior and features.

The power couple has hosted many celebrities on the Eos, which spends her summers crisscrossing the Mediterranean and New Year ' s Eve in St. Barts . Over the years, guests have included Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thompson, Anderson Cooper, and Bezos, leading some to believe she provided inspiration for his Koru.

Jim Clark: Athena

Netscape founder Jim Clark purchased the 90-meter sailing yacht Athena in 2004.

"I could easily have built a 50- or 60-meter motor yacht that would have had the same space as Athena, but I was never really interested in building a motor yacht," he told Boat International in 2016. "To my eye, she's one of the most gorgeous large sailing yachts, maybe the most gorgeous large sailing yacht in the world."

Athena has room for 10 guests and 21 crewmembers, and the only change Clark says he'd make in her design is adding more space for his kids.

"If I was forced to change something, I would convert the office on the lower deck into a children's room," he said.

The former Stanford professor tried to sell her at various points — listing her for $95 million in 2012 , $69 million in 2016, and $59 million in 2017 — but she has yet to change hands.

Larry Ellison: Musashi

Oracle founder Larry Ellison has owned several superyachts over the years, including the Katana, the Ronin, and the Rising Sun — which he sold to fellow billionaire David Geffen .

He purchased his current boat, Musashi, in 2011 for a reported $160 million from custom-yacht giant Feadship.

Named after a famous samurai warrior, the 88-meter-long yacht has both Japanese and Art Deco-inspired design elements. She also boasts amenities including an elevator, swimming pool, beauty salon, gym, and basketball court.

Ellison is known for his extravagant spending — private islands, jets, a tennis tournament — and yachting is among his favorite and most expensive hobbies. He took up racing them in the 1990s and financed the America's Cup-winning BMW Oracle Racing team .

Laurene Powell Jobs: Venus

Steve Jobs' wife, investor and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, inherited a nearly finished 78-meter yacht named Venus when the Apple cofounder died in 2011.

After spending years vacationing on Ellison's yachts, Jobs wanted one for himself. He designed Venus with French starchitect and decorator Philippe Starck , and she was worth $130 million at completion.

"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."

Jobs and Starck began working together in 2007, the designer told Vanity Fair , and held monthly meetings over four years. Venus was delivered in 2012 to Jobs' specification: six identical cabins, a design to ensure spaces of absolute silence, and the most up-to-date technology.

"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. "It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes."

Charles Simonyi: Norn

Early Microsoft employee Charles Simonyi has purchased two megayachts from the German shipyard Lürssen: the 90-meter Norn and 71-meter Skat.

Delivered in 2023, Norn is full of luxe features, including an outdoor cinema and a pool floor that lifts to become a light-up dancefloor. She shares a militaristic style with Skat , which Simonyi sold in 2021.

Skats's name is derived from the Danish word for treasure, and she had a listing price of 56.5 million euros and was launched in 2002.

"The yacht is to be home away from my home in Seattle, and its style should match the style of the house, adapted for the practicalities of the sea," Simonyi once said .

Sergey Brin: Dragonfly

Google cofounder Sergey Brin has built a flotilla of yachts, boats, and toys known as the "Fly Fleet."

Named after a once-secret Google product , the largest of Brin's armada is the sleek Dragonfly , which boasts a movie theater and a helipad. The 73-meter-long vessel was built by the Australian shipyard Silver Yachts and can fit up to 18 guests and 16 crew members, according to SuperYacht Times.

Also in his fleet is the superyacht Butterfly, a mere 38 meters long. Often moored in the Bay Area, her crewmembers spend their downtime kitesurfing and giving swimming lessons to local kids.

The rest of his marine lineup includes a smaller boat called Firefly, as well as Jet Skis, foilboards, dinghies, and kiteboards. She takes a team of 50 full-time employees to manage, steer, and maintain the entire operation.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd. 

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that. 

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role. 

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.
